Reviews for The Plough Itchen Abbas
Review 1:Kitchen was out of action for refurbishment so no evening meal available and only coffee and cereal for breakfast. They called shortly after booking to warn us and give us a chance to find an alternative and offered a generous discount so really not a problem.
Review 2:Clean, cosy and comfortable B&B in beautiful location. Friendly and helpful staff.
Review 3:I was contacted on 4 1 2016 and given the option of going elsewhere as kitchen would be out of action 11 1 2016 as we were meeting friends there we opted honour booking. the manager then said he would charge us £60 per night breakfast 0n 10 1 16 gratus and would contact yourselves so you were aware of lower cost. I was charged £209 99 +£4.00 for an open drink I never had I paid for drinks as I bought them my full comments are on Trp Advisor and the reason this was not bought up at time of paying As I was leaving he sugested we contact him direct when we visit in nov/dec this year as it would be cheaper this way. Also I ended up having to repair the toilet seat as it kept coming off even though the manager kept repairing it and it was becoming a bit of joke with the staff causing embaressment to my wife. Finally it does seem better to book direct with hotels as my friends who were only staying one night had a much larger and more comfortable room for the same price
Review 4:Everybody very courtious and friendly and food was good at a reasonable price and the hotel was warm themanager seemed to be a nice young man
Review 5:Heating in room not working well, a bit too close to the road (noise)
Review 6:Nice part of Hampshire, comfortable bed, nice bar, welcoming staff Accepted pets
Review 7:The electric power shower in the King Room (Turnwrest) perhaps wasn't as powerful or heat regulated as it should have been but it didn't spoil our weekend at all.
Review 8:The location was fabulous. The pub was lovely and the food was excellent.

Review 10:The staff were very friendly and accommodating! Gorgeous log fire, good menu of food for dinner and a fantastic breakfast. Very comfortable bed and decent shower.
Review 11:Nothing else nearby, bus service into Winchester infrequent and parking difficult (but it was a week before Christmas...) Poor vegetarian choice (same menu all week and only two veggie dishes).
Review 12:Such a warm welcome form staff and other locals. Fabulous dinner, fresh, plentiful and reasonably priced. The place has a lovely atmosphere. Handy for getting into Winchester, the room was comfortable and quiet.
Review 13:I had the cassoulet for dinner which was very nice but could have been a larger portion.
Review 14:Nice country pub with good quality food and drink. The staff were all very friendly.
Review 15:Beautifully decorated and welcoming pub with good restaurant and food. Good choice of local beers and some good malt whiskeys. Room was comfortable and quiet.
Review 16:Nothing we didn't like.
Review 17:The pub was nicely decorated with comfortable furnishings, very clean. The staff were very polite, friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. The room was very comfortable very clean.
Review 18:The pub was in the centre of a quiet village which was very picturesque. The room was clean and comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 19:Not really bad experience but the shower was not very efficient, eventually got the temperature but pressure was very low
Review 20:The young lady assistant was terrific - she is a great asset to the team. Very polite, professional and happy to help.
Review 21:Would suggest having fresh fruit and plane yogurt available at breakfast to compliment other great choices.
Review 22:Very friendly and comfortable. Only 5-10mins drive outside Winchester. Lovely location. Would definitely recommend and will stay again.
Review 23:Shower unit a bit leaky and temperamental! Vehicle exit on a bend in the road is a bit scary, even with the help of the bevelled mirror on the opposite side of the road! Warning signs for traffic would help greatly.
Review 24:Friendly, helpful staff. Warm, comfortable bar and lovely restaurant. Excellent menu.
Review 25:It's not a criticism but just as a helpful note for future guests, if you are a very light sleeper then the road at the front of the property can be a little bit noisy if you have the window open at night as I do. Might just be worthwhile booking one of the rooms elsewhere in the building.
Review 26:Clean, decent sized room for one person with everything you could need for a short break, the bed was amazingly comfortable too. Friendly and helpful staff, good food, can't think of anything to improve
Review 27:Room was terrible - chair attached to wall as a wardrobe? Then they tried to ask us for more money accusing us of trashing the room - any mess they identified was not made by us. They also accused us of breaking the wardrobe - as mentioned before, this was a chair on a wall!
Review 28:Location
Review 29:Everything, lovely welcoming staff, we rang to advise we had been delayed so wouldn't be checking in until late and they couldn't help enough to ensure we had food ready for us on arrival... lovely place... breakfast very good... lovely room with balcony just wish we had been staying longer.
Review 30:The digital TV reception was terrible, we were unable to watch anything so resorted to the Iphone. The assumed manageress wasnt very welcoming when we arrived. The room was quite small and we found bank and booking details from a previous guest within the B & B guide, dated Feb 2015.
Review 31:The food was very good, as we're the Resturant staff.
Review 32:Nothing.
Review 33:Food was fabulous. Staff were friendly and accomodating. Road side rooms did not have a noise problem in the evening as no traffic. Lovely view of church in the morning. We were no aware of noise from the bar. Breakfast was really good. The location was really good.
Review 34:Friendly and helpful staff. They ensured we were shown to the room, not just directed and offered a table for dinner. On the day of leaving we were accommodated until we were ready to leave despite a delay in our collecting a car.
Review 35:We could not get a signal for a picture on the TV, just sound. There was quite a bit of noise form the pub in the evening but it wouldn't put us off staying again.
Review 36:We stayed here for 1 night. There was lots of car parking space. Lovely pub up a country lane away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The place had fantastic decoration and pictures of the area years ago and we really enjoyed looking at whilst having a drink and waiting for our food. It was really lovely. Our room was very clean and roomy and we had a comfy bed with lots of pillows. Good sized bathroom. We had a good selection of teas. There was a hairdryer in the room. Our room looked out on to the reasonably quiet road. We had an evening meal as well as our breakfast. Both were really excellent with lots of choices. We were overall very pleased with our stay here and would return again.
Review 37:We queried the chips being oven chips we were told they were not but they tasted like oven chips We were told that because of this one of the deserts would be free But when we paid the bill we were still charged for it
Review 38:The staff were helpful
Review 39:Didn't upset us as we didn't have to get up too early next day, but a warning - if your room is over the bar you will not have quiet until about half past midnight.
Review 40:Attractive pub, friendly staff and good food
Review 41:Small double room more single a machine on the toilet went all night so had no sleep. When we told the owner at checkout he deducted £10 of the bill,no big deal for no sleep
Review 42:Hotel was clean not much else to say
Review 43:Nothing at all
Review 44:Welcoming hosts, comfortable room, friendly atmosphere, good local ale and a nice relaxed dinner! A full english breakfast and a cheery goodbye completed our very pleasant stay. We'll definitely be back soon!
Review 45:I felt a little chilly in my room, my husband not so much. I was assured it is to be upgraded soon anyway, so not really a problem.
Review 46:All staff were extremely friendly chatty and helpful. Every single one. Amazing! Oh, and the food is excellent too.
Review 47:No light in the bathroom, mentioned it to member of staff but nothing done about it. Waited 20 mins for poached eggs & a slice of bacon asked for crispy bacon but was very fatty when it eventually came eggs were solid, bread was dry & nobody came to ask if we wanted any more coffee or to ask if everything was ok. Very poor breakfast experience.
Review 48:The building & bar area
Review 49:- Shower water temperature not consistent, changed from hot to cold in the middle of a shower. - TV didnt work- no reception.
Review 50:- Charles & George were fantastic staff, very friendly and helpful! - Wifi was very good considering it was a bad area for mobile reception. - Great food (when they had menu items in stock) - Bar downstairs! - Short drive to Winchester
Review 51:Very clean hotel. Comfortable bed. Pleasant environment. Evening meal in restaurant excellent. Free parking. Bus into centre of Winchester over the road. Taxi fare Winchester to Itchen Abbas 12 to 14 GB pounds. Great alternative to city hotel.
Review 52:Not specifically bad but a cupboard to hang clothes would be more helpful than a chair with 2 hangers.
Review 53:Very welcoming. The staff were exceptionally pleasant and helpful, and nothing was too much trouble. Slept well without a problem. Beer and wine very good. Food & service at the evening meal was excellent.
Review 54:Rude house manager No TV signal Wifi is poor Very noisy Shower had 1 setting extra extra hot. Light was not working in the bathroom No batteries in the TV remote for the TV that did not work
Review 55:Location was excellent as the project we were working on was 3 mins drive away. We wanted to use this hotel for the next 19 weeks. However we will never go back.......
Review 56:The bed was small, that's only because I am used to king size . But was comfortable
Review 57:The staff where all very friendly, couldn't of been more helpful. The rooms where so clean not even one bit of dust. The atmosphere was very welcoming establishment very well kept. Definately going to revisit. The dinner was fantastic best Sunday roast I've had in a long time.
Review 58:There was nothing to dislike.only issues were TV reception which proprietor is currently resolving, and the hot water pressure is somewhat slow but perfectly adequate. Only other thing could mention is that the Plough is obviously an ongoing project and improvements could be made externally ie general tidiness of beer garden and parking area.
Review 59:Proprietor and staff excellent.breakfast first class.general menu first class.overall appearance and decor really good.excellent ambiance.great location for Winchester and surrounding area. Stayed for four nights Mon - Friday in August .Great choice.
Review 60:Good location, lovely villages near by. Nice rooms with comfortable beds, evening meal very good. Outside patio area very nice, unfortunately due to bad weather could not use it.
Review 61:There was no reception for the TV but the staff advised that this was being dealt with. Really not a big deal!
Review 62:Lovely quiet location, lovely feel to the place. Great food with a good selection of wines and fairly good value. Breakfast was also very good.
Review 63:poor shower no pressure tv no reception it was a big day of cricket lots of residents not happy with no tv was told sky man was coming but no one turned up
Review 64:great place to stay staff very good food very good
Review 65:Stayed for a wedding, had a lovely and delicious pub lunch before, the room was small but was very clean and comfortable. Absolutely perfect. Thankyou!
Review 66:Light, spacious room with balcony. Very friendly, helpful staff and excellent food. We had an excellent evening meal as well as the breakfast. Easy parking.
Review 67:I would have preferred a lighter sheet on the bed - a duvet was too warm.
Review 68:The friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff we met and the care taken to provide very good accommodation.
Review 69:Television in room did not work, however when I commented on this I was advised a new satellite dish was to be installed.
Review 70:Cleanliness, friendliness of staff.
Review 71:The welcome we received from the staff. The cleanliness of facilities and room amenities cannot be faulted. If ever we are in that area again requiring overnight accommodation would not hesitate to go back.
Review 72:THERE WASN'T ANYTHING I DIDN'T LIKE.
Review 73:I LIKED THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED AT YOUR INN.THE STANDOUT OF THE HELP I GOT FROM YOU ALL, THE TAXI YOU GOT ME,WAS GREAT. TO OF THE LADY'S THAT WORK WITH YOU,WHERE GOING TO WINCHESTER. I SAID THEY COULD GO WITH ME IF THEY WANT.THEY SAID NO. WE 'LL GO WITH THE BUS.
Review 74:none
Review 75:The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable with everything we needed. My only minor gripe was that the shower floor was very slippery when wet and a rubber mat would have been useful
Review 76:TV reception is very poor throughout hotel. Bed duvet totally wrong for summer i.e 13 TOG and no real alternative. Inadequate clothes hanging space.
Review 77:Good restaurant. Dinner and breakfast good value. Accommodation suitable for overnight stay. Simply needs improvements in basic facilities.
Review 78:We booked two nights to celebrate my retirement. As we didn't take any books or laptop with us, we were relying on TV or radio for communication with the outside world. Through no fault of the pub, there was no reception for the TV on the day and evening we arrived. It was unfortunate, but handled well. We would go back and stay there.
Review 79:The staff were good and breakfast excellent
Review 80:Room was small with only very adequate furniture i.e Chair up high on wall to sit fan and serve as hanging rail ! - tv in far corner - difficult to view .
Review 81:Lovely country pub with sunny garden & pleasant friendly ambience within bar area.
Review 82:Television reception is not good. Location of pub is not central village so not a lot to do there.
Review 83:Pleasant and helpful staff. Good refurb so pleasant setting.
Review 84:The Deluxe room was large but failed in offering a dressing table/mirror to use in hair grooming/make up etc also the bathroom although spotless was very small with no room to place toiletries when using same. Breakfast was sparse, no fresh fruit.
Review 85:The Location
Review 86:The only downside was that the TV kept cutting out probably due to reception. But this wadn't a major problem.
Review 87:A very comfortable room. Food was delicious.
Review 88:The waitress was very accommodating regarding breakfast but we could clearly hear the chef booming about how angry he was that the requests changed. The wifi access was intermittent
Review 89:Comfortable room
Review 90:The TV failed to work after a short time, apparently from poor signal reception.
Review 91:Well situated for visiting Winchester, Alresford etc and in a nice little village
Review 92:Not very good TV signal or phone signal but that's not the ploughs fault other wise nothing else,
Review 93:The manager and staff were very helpful nothing to much trouble I would stay again.
Review 94:Room with balcony could have had cobwebs cleaned (regularly); Mirror over wash basin was too high; breakfast time - fewer pieces of toast would go to waste if served sooner; could have had another cup of coffee with breakfast.
Review 95:Location, atmosphere, comfort, nice shower; helpful & courteous staff.
Review 96:Appalling tv/ radio reception - gave up in the end. Would have liked fruit with breakfast.
Review 97:Comfortable king size bed, large room with private balcony. Fantastic evening meal in pub restaurant downstairs.
Review 98:Not having a Sunday evening restaurant service, although we note that this is planned; the landlord has to be commended however for recommending an alternative pub nearby and ringing through to book us a table. Much appreciated.
Review 99:Friendly staff and amiable landlord, all of whom demonstrated care and enthusiasm.
Review 100:We stay in B&Bs frequently and found the mattress unusually soft. A subjective comment I know. Would have liked fresh fruit as part of an otherwise delicious breakfast.
Review 101:A good location - we used it as a stopover on route to Southampton. A well-managed pub with a fresh menu and a rural, countrified atmosphere. Spacious beer garden.
Review 102:En suite O.K..but as I am short, 5'3 could not see myself in wash mirror. Very steep stairs to reach room, all fire doors on a strong springs, awkward to open.
Review 103:Food and drink were good quality.
Review 104:Wanted somewhere to stay after a day at Peppa Pig world for our granddaughters birthday treat and couldn't have chosen better. Staff were all very pleasant, nice room with very comfortable bed, food was delicious plus a bar to have a couple of relaxing drinks before retiring
Review 105:Not a bad experience as such but intermittent signal meant that watching TV was not really an option.
Review 106:The staff were very kind and helpful and the food was very good indeed
Review 107:Didn't like the fact that there is no phone reception at all but that's not the fault of the Plough. And the TV reception is rubbish you can only watch a program for a short time then the TV chancel goes whisk it the fault of the plough they need to sort this problem out by fitting a signal booster and by getting a better satiate system. And I also think it's quite expensive for what it is. The food wasn't brilliant but it wasn't bad either I think they need to up there standards a bit rather then just have pub food they have a nice restaurant so why not do better food then pub food. The breakfast was ok but could do better for what you pay. The drinks are expensive. But I surpose in that area they can charge what they like.
Review 108:I liked the fact that is was nice and close to the Sir John Moore Barracks were we were attending are sons pass out parade. And it if very close to Winchester.
Review 109:Poor design of room, the space could easily have been arranged differently to incorporate a full bathroom.
Review 110:Friendly and efficient staff, excellent food.
Review 111:Loved this pub with accommodation, we were late arriving and even though the pub was busy, staff were so freindly and welcoming, showing us to our room then making a table available for dinner was really appreciated, food was excellent and good value, loved every minute here and would highly reccommend!
Review 112:I booked a room with a balcony but they gave that room to someone else before I arrived. They then tried to let someone else into the alternative room I was given (with no balcony), whilst I was still in there. At midnight there was 15 minutes of someone trying to get into the fire escape door, by my room, which woke me & scared the living daylights out of me. It turned out to be another resident whose key did not work. If I had been undisturbed in my room with a balcony, this place would have been near perfect.
Review 113:The food was really lovely, both the evening meal and the breakfast was excellent quality.
Review 114:Some b/fast ingredients pre-cooked-never a good thing especially with just a few guests.Bedrooms were chilly. Drinks expensive eg small wine £5, pkt crisps £1
Review 115:Good ale. Good menu and dinner very good. Rooms OK and very clean . Staff efficient other than one forgotten request re.heating bedrooms.
Review 116:The evening meal was excellent and it was a pleasant environment, but the room was small, the shower ineffectual and heating only came on in the middle of the night.
Review 117:The food for breakfast was excellent, but what makes the Plough outstanding is that it is also a restaurant (and pub). The restaurant is what puts this place well into the excellent category. The rooms are comfortable, especially the beds, although not fancy. One might think that rooms on the second floor of a pub/restaurant would be noisy, especially as the Plough is right on the road (admittedly a B road); but we did not find this to be the case. The Plough is also well located for Winchester, provided of course, that you are traveling by car. The staff were uniformly friendly, competent, and helpful.
Review 118:Nothing really, apart from a mirror not being ideally positioned, and the TV signal was rather intermittent, but these issues are being addressed in the next few weeks
Review 119:The service and standard of food was excellent throughout our stay and could not be faulted
Review 120:my husband and I stayed here mid week we found the room to be of a high standard and very clean They have a lovely beer garden and the food is good quality and great value for money 2 course meal mid week was only 11.00 would stay here again highly recommended
Review 121:Very good service from staff. Big room with a balcony. Visited here when I went to a wedding reception at the village hall next door. Very happy with the stay.
Review 122:I asked the chef to make me sandwiches so that I could take with me on the day we left. He was so helpful making an effort to ensure I had what I wanted. What's more, they were delicious. Thank you.......Breakfast was lovely too :)
Review 123:Our room was not cleaned one morning so had no tea, milk etc, but the bar staff gave us some and apologised. The Manager also apologised that evening. The reception for the TV was bad in the evenings. Did not try the WiFi so not sure on that.
Review 124:The staff at the Plough were very friendly. The room was very clean and everything that you needed there. The Evening Meals were good.
Review 125:Not good for signal for phone and wifi. The aerial had pulled away from the plug so no tv reception. Did tell the staff in the morning so hopefully fixed for next guest.
Review 126:Very friendly staff and we had a lovely meal in the restaurant. Easy to visit Winchester with a bus service on the doorstep. Very comfortable bed.
Review 127:Nothing
Review 128:Stayed for one night but would loved to have stayed longer. The welcome we had was second to none. The room was spotless with an extremely comfortable king size bed. Had an evening meal which was delicious - both main course and pudding. All food freshly made and could not be faulted. After a great nights sleep we had a fantastic Full English breakfast. The sausages we so tasty. Local made jam on toast ended to meal perfectly. We left full, satisfied and very happy! If we are ever in the locality would not hesitate to stay again.
Review 129:Everything about our stay on Saturday 8th March was brilliant, Ashley the manager was the perfect host, nothing was too much trouble for him and his staff and the food in the restaurant was excellent, also a good selection of beers and wines. All in all a little gem. Dave & Sue.
Review 130:Initial problem with the room heating but this was quickly remedied. Television reception was poor at times.
Review 131:Comfortable bed and freshly cooked breakfast.
Review 132:We chose here for the ease at getting back to the motorway to take us onto Portsmouth Ferry Terminal. Nice friendly atmosphere. Would definitely stay again.
