Reviews for Penwig

Review 1:Our room was above the bar and it was very noisy and our bed was too hard. I had to put a blanket underneath me as I was unable to sleep as I was not able to get comfortable. We had a meal in the bar in the evening and it was very poor. I had a steak meal which I was less than impressed with.

Review 2:The staff, especially Terri, were lovely, helpful and cheerful. Breakfast was very well cooked and tasty.

Review 3:we both had a terrible nights sleep, the bed was rock hard.+ they did not serve breakfast until 9.00 am , not experienced this before, in all places I stop 7.00 to 7.30 is the norm.

Review 4:We had lovely coastal views, staff very helpful.Thats about it.

Review 5:Bathroom really small and bit tired. Cooked breakfast was lovely but not much variety for continental option. Restaurant/pub looked lovely but choose burgers for evening meal which were very basic (burger and a bap!), which was a little disappointing

Review 6:Tge location is fantastic, you step out the door to a beautiful beach and harbour. Room was nicely furnished

Review 7:Bedroom was very small and the bed was uncomfortable as we could feel all the springs in the mattress.

Review 8:Beautiful hotel in a beautiful location.Very friendly staff and Very clean . Breakfast was lovely and we eat a meal in the bar in the evening which again was very nice.

Review 9:The staff is exceedingly courteous! Very polite and very caring. They made it very comfortable for us. The location is great. It's very likely that you could see dolphins in the bay from the room itself. The food too is delicious

Review 10:Warm welcome on arrival and even though the bar was very busy we were given priority to check in. Location is overlooking the harbour and beach and is perfect. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. The choice and condition of ale is excellent. Great breakfast. Overall, first class value for money and a great place for a short break.

Review 11:We stayed in The Cottage part of the Hotel which was fantastic apart from the generator which was fairly noisy outside at night

Review 12:The position of the Hotel was fantastic. The Staff were very helpful and always cheerful. Hotel was very clean and the food was excellent.

Review 13:The bed was hard and boney but told staff who put a quilt on the mattress which helped a bit.they were aware this room needed a new mattress so hopefully better next time .

Review 14:Love the location.the food is lovely and the staff can't do enough for you .

Review 15:Location was the main reason for booking. We had the separate cottage at the rear, so we could come and go as we pleased. We booked another hotel elsewhere and wished we had stayed put.

Review 16:Occasional poor reception with the Wi Fi but this did not dampen our enjoyment too much.

Review 17:Everything could not have been more perfect. Everyone and everything was perfect and way beyond our expectations. We will definately be going back without doubt.

Review 18:Small room with tiny bathroom, lumpy bed, television with poor signal, hard to turn door knob on bathroom door and noise from people entering front door. We had inedible fish pie on first night which was more like a cheese and potato soup with no fish. Much of the food appeared to be microwaved. Breakfast bacon was leathery and sausages over cooked. Very small car park.

Review 19:The view

Review 20:We where right in the heart of New Quay, you came out of the door and had such a wonderful view of the harbour, where we saw the dolphins from the quayside most days. You could also pop downstairs to the bar for a drink or a meal.

Review 21:There was nothing I didn't like.

Review 22:I liked the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the room decor and the food. Excellent value for money. The location was good too.

Review 23:Car park extremely small and limited number of staff available to assist.

Review 24:Location, location, location! Beautiful and clean room with good meals available on site.

Review 25:Nothing. It was unfortunate that we didn't eat here this time (apart from breakfast) but there were no tables and a 45 minute wait when we went for our evening meal. This just proves how popular it is! It was quite noisy in the morning as the doors banged a lot but that meant you woke and got up earlier to enjoy the peace and quiet in the harbour!

Review 26:The views and central location in New Quay.

Review 27:Bed was very lumpy and uncomfortable in room 1 - which we did report to the guy when checking out, parking can be tight and access is tricky up a narrow lane to the rear. Serving times at the bar could be long as there seemed to be only one member of staff taking orders for food and serving drinks - some help would have sped up the process

Review 28:Location is excellent - right on the front at the harbour. Staff were all friendly, although the accommodation is unmanned at night (contact details are available and simple to access should they bee needed. It's a Brain's pub, the food is very affordable but surprisingly good - the kitchen is open and you can watch the food being prepared. Beer was good. New Quay itself is lovely.

Review 29:Not much bad about it except poor WiFi in room, worked OK in dining area though....probably not too much of a bad thing, you are on holiday after all!!

Review 30:Fantastic seafront location,a very big room (we stayed in cottage room) a lovely big bedroom/lounge area upstairs, two large single beds and a large bathroom downstairs, ideal if taking older children not so good for very young children but we loved it.

Review 31:Dirty Dusty Broken Dangerous IgnoredLet the pictures speak for me.At first sight the room 6 seemed to be fantastic, an outside annexe at the back of the pub just off the car park. But when I sat down for the first time in the upstairs main room I saw with shock the very dangerous convector heater standing on the floor with no legs. This is a fire hazard !!!!!!! I got the manager to remove it. CHECK THEY DON'T SNEEK IT BACK INTO ONE OF THE ROOMS.It's a shame because most of the problems could be sorted in less than an hour. It's just bad management on a local level but more so on a head office level for not letting the local manager manage to do his job and instruct repairs and offer resolution to problems on the spot.1 Rusty bin2 smoke detector full of dust.3 Bath that could not be used as the overflow is hanging off and the plug will not let the bath empty.4 Toilet seat loose about to come off.5 Mould round the bath6 Dust hanging outside the bathroom.7 The fire hazard heater8 The fire hazard heater9 The bedside cupboard .zoom to see it needs cleaning.10 The view from the sea back to the Penwig.I reported everything to the manager and was told he could not get repairs done because it's owed by BRAINS breweries and he is just a manager.I was asked to pay full price for this room and I did pay as again I was told he could not offer anything because it's owed by BRAINS breweries and he is just a manager.I contacted BRAINS breweries and I have put their less than satisfactory response below as I am unlikely to drive the 3 hours to go there again. I actually contacted their head office who did not even bother to follow up direct with me and just told the local manager to respond on his return from holidayNot Good Enough.

Review 32:Most of what I did not mention above

Review 33:Very limited parking to rear of hotel but understandable due to the hotels location.

Review 34:We had a fantastic nights stay and enjoyed it so much we tried to book another night but it was full unfortunately..we will definitely be returning in the future.the staff were excellent and genuinely interested in our comfort.

Review 35:Two slices (for two people) of toast on day one. Sorry no white bread on day two Although Penwig had my card details they insisted I pay by card on booking in. I like to see how my cash goes during the holiday and pay by cash at the end of my stay. Although TV's are provided, It would be nice to know what numbers are allocated to the programme channels. Not being Welsh it was a lottery

Review 36:The location and helpfulness of most of the staff

Review 37:The fire door next to our room has an almighty bang when it closes, this really hindered our sleep, need to invest in soft closing hinge, the window in our room was broken and had to be held open with a piece of wood, cremated sausages at breakfast, should never have been sent out. Bed is really hard and lumpy

Review 38:location is amazing, decor is lovely, staff are really friendly

Review 39:Tables hadn't been cleared - dirty plates and glasses everywhere. Waited a long time to book in. Staff rude and ignorant - made you feel like an inconvenience. Room tiny, dusty. No curtains, window broken. It was propped open with a piece of wood.

Review 40:Although I was the first one in to breakfast, I was the last one served and it took 1 hour to get it. Not ideal as I was in New Quay participating in a dinghy race and it made me late to the start line!

Review 41:The location was great and the room although small was very nice

Review 42:Just because my wife disabled, very hilly to get anywhere so others need to be aware...but still worth the effort to stay there!

Review 43:Great location right opposite the sea, great, friendly staff nothing too much for them! Room was great, clean, shower worked lovely. Everything you needed in your room.

Review 44:Nothing bad to report. We had seen some bad reviews of the food, but we tried it anyway, and while not perfect, it was good enough, and good value.

Review 45:Wonderful views from the hotel terrace. Nice big room and bathroom, partial sea view - we saw the dolphins from there! Pleasant bar area with reasonably priced drinks. Though the parking area was small, the landlord did his best to make sure all the guests' vehicles could be accommodated.

Review 46:Nothing

Review 47:We stayed for 2 nights at the penwig found it very relaxing ro was lovely ,food was very good we had breakfast 2 mornings & ate in the pub in the evenings couldn't fault the food or the staff would definitely return

Review 48:cubical for the shower was to small.the beds were hard.and the TVs were small could do with bigger ones.at to go outside of the hotel to our rooms.

Review 49:Breakfast great friendly staff and good location

Review 50:Food at pinwig was awfull watched as they put food in microwaves while we were eating the waitress sprayed the table next to us so all we could taste was cleaning spray all food no taste all frozen

Review 51:Location was great

Review 52:Only stayed for one night Staff were all really lovely and room was great. Can't comment on food as didn't eat in the pub but the menu looked good. Right opposite the sea.

Review 53:Liked everything. We had the 'cottage' which was roomy, clean, quiet and well stocked. The pub had a typical pub menu with excellent options on the specials board. Breakfast was tasty with good service.

Review 54:As on the booking.com site you can see the excellent view from the room ,was really disappointed about my room view.Clean but dusty and shower accessible only for XS or S size people.

Review 55:excellent location and breakfast, tea ,coffee in room plenty

Review 56:nothing, New Quay is one of the most beautiful places in the uk

Review 57:everything, ideal relaxing break, plenty of walks and things to do , or simply relax and chill out

Review 58:wasn't a bad experience but thought bar would have been open longer than 2230 for residents as it is a hotel

Review 59:location. Breakfast was very good. Staff friendly and helpful

Review 60:As I had booked this stay my partner was apprehensive as he remembered it years ago so I was on tenterhooks. However, it proved excellent, friendly staff and very clean. Bed a bit small (normal double) but great value for money

Review 61:Room was quite small, including wardrobe. Door handle to bathroom difficult to turn. Quite noisy music up until 11.30pm. Bed really firm and uncomfortable.

Review 62:Loved the decor of the room, en suite and bar areas. Liked the separate access and carpark facility. Breakfast was delicious. We would definitely try evening meal if we return. Would stay again if room 3 or 4 available.

Review 63:The bathroom door was difficult to open from the inside and each of us needed help from the other person to get the shower door open in room 1, so I have suggested to the hotel not to put solo travellers in this room! The evening meal was disappointing as well, fairly bland and unexciting food. This was unexpected as we have great food there previously.

Review 64:The decor of the room was lovely and the bed comfortable. The staff were helpful.

Review 65:New matress but of the poorest quality - could feel all the springs; struggled to open shower door but once in I couldn't get out without partner forcing door open from the outside; ordered two Welsh Beef and Brains Ale pies - one arrived full of finely chopped beef that tasted/looked as if it had been boiled in water (no sauce) while the other contained 3 very small pieces of beef in water; puff pastry was huge but failed to hide the disappointment that lay beneath. Veg was cold and measly. Using the name 'Welsh beef' and 'Brains ale' suggests a quality product - these were not and were doing both those products a diservice.

Review 66:Decor and location

Review 67:Noise from the kitchen fan which was quite loud in room no 1. In fairness it was usually switched off by 11.30.

Review 68:Location right on the harbour was excellent.

Review 69:Room wasn't very big, I wouldn't want to stay more than overnight in that sized room (Room 3)

Review 70:The food was great. The view over the harbour was beautiful.

Review 71:The room was very late being cleaned, therefore no milk in the room for an afternoon cuppa. when the manager Mike was informed he just shrugged and begrudgingly gave me a hug of milk but offered no apology. Tv in room had no reception.

Review 72:Location

Review 73:Everything was available. Hotel restaurant at very moderate prices. A quaint and comfortable room with a picture window overlooking the bay and harbour from across the road. Plenty of places within a 5 minute walk. Restaurants, fish and chip shops, post office and mini market for those everyday items we needed.

Review 74:None

Review 75:Just returned from a very relaxing break at the Penwig, hotel and staff were great. Fabulous view of the bay from our window plan on returning in June

Review 76:Car park was restricted but alternatives were available. Owing to inclement weather it was a little noisy - not the hotels fault.

Review 77:Excellent location for the quay and beach. Room 3 bright with 3 windows two of which overlooked the sea. Rooms freshly decorated, very clean. Duvet excellent . Cleaning lady and all staff very helpful.

Review 78:The bed was, unfortunately, really uncomfortable so we didn't sleep well. Suggest mattress topper or better quality mattress as rest was an important part of our break?! X

Review 79:Penwig's location is perfect! We saw our first ever dolphin...in January!! The staff were lovely, so friendly. Lovely quiet time of year to walk the beaches and enjoy the peace. Booked again for October!

Review 80:No bad points i could be really picky but was good value for money.

Review 81:Location of the penwig even managed to watch dolphin from the bar. Nice comfortable room friendly staff and good food and beer

Review 82:Nothing! Wish we could have stayed longer

Review 83:The rooms were small but very cozy and comfortable The town is so charming We were taken care of very well at the bar/restaurant. We had a large group meal and were treated very well from the moment we arrived.

Review 84:The bed was rock hard! OK I'm spoilt by my memory foam mattress but neither me or my partner slept well due to the firmness of the mattress.

Review 85:Stayed here for one night whilst en route to visiting relatives. Wished we were staying longer as we would have liked to chill out in the bar after a meal as the atmosphere was warm and friendly. We were told our room wasnt a sea view, (room 2) but as far as we were concerned it was if you sat on the window ledge which was a nice suprise!. Room was clean warm and cosy (aka small) and perfect for our stay. Will come back for longer in the spring/summer.

Review 86:We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay in the Penwig. We have been travelling to New Quay for 28 years or more and we have never stayed in the Penwig, often had a drink and a meal in the Penwig but never stayed. However, we were more than satisfied with our stay, due to very friendly staff, very clean facilities, very modern and highly decorated room. Plenty of drink facilities for you to have in your room, beverage that be not alcohol. We would most definitley stay in the Penwig again.. Thank you for a lovely stay. Katrina and Gareth Gittings

Review 87:Being pregnant the bathroom was just about big enough for me, but in a few weeks I think I would have struggled! So room 1 bathroom not ideal for the larger people.

Review 88:Lovely pub with a homely and modern atmosphere. Room was perfect- everything we needed was catered for. Location ideal for a relaxing Cei Newydd visit.

Review 89:Should I really say something worse than very good about Penwig, I would say its private parking space is a bit small, so finding a free spot can be tricky. We were there in mid-september and the staff had to rearrange the cars to let us park, which they did very efficiently. Having a private park in New Quay is very important because you basically cannot park on the road if not for a very short time.

Review 90:New Quay is pictoresque and the Penwig Hotel lies just toward its small harbour. Rooms are adequately sized and clean, and the very central position of the structure allows to take a walk to the many restaurants in the surroundings or to the prospicient beach. Staff was very helpful and kind, could not ask anything more.

Review 91:A storm came in. It was horreddous and didn't get any sleep due to chimes knocking, wind whisteling. The bar was playing music and could be easily heard in the room. Had to tell them to switch it down.

Review 92:Lovely sized room with great views Bar and food area is very nice. Very fresh and clean.

Review 93:Must dust behind things aswell. TVs need dusting aswell you know

Review 94:Staff were never pushy but when you did ask them you felt like the most important thing at the time

Review 95:•The matrass in room 1 was hard and you could feel every spring in it. It could do with replacing or a matrass topper adding. •Limited car parking.

Review 96:•Fantastic location overlooking the harbour. •Lovely modern decorated room. •Great value at £65 per night. •Good selection of drinks available in room including bottled water. •Delicious breakfast and coffee. •Very friendly and helpful staff. •The nearby Pay & Display was only £2.20 per day or £7.50 per week.

Review 97:Great place to stay staff cant do enough for you, lovely clean rooms , good food . great location right on the front. 2nd visit and would book again .

Review 98:I sent my mum and dad as a surprise present for there 25th wedding anniversary. They both loved there stay and have booked to go again next year! That to me speaks volumes!

Review 99:You have your own entrance to the accommodation which is above the bar. Rooms were quiet and well furnsihed. We stayed in a lovely beach themed room with a large window bay with separate table and chairs to sit and look out across Cardigan bay. Parking facilities are available round the back

Review 100:The parking was a bit off a lottery, if you wanted a good spot you need to be back before 5pm allthough the manager was very obliging and spent some considerable time shuffling late arrivals in.

Review 101:Our room was very modern tastefully deccored, and had plenty of room,it also had a reasonable view of the harbour and a rear view of the south of Newquay

Review 102:Parking is an issue, although the manager did move his car to make way for mine, which was very accommodating. Unfortunately the mattress on my bed had seen better days! (Room 2) Also the shower was small - I'm not sure a large person would fit!

Review 103:The location of the Penwig is brilliant, the staff were very welcoming and my room was light and airy. Breakfast was good, as was the service.

Review 104:Rooms little warm, unable to open windows on front but when discussed this is due to health & safety so required to keep closed, this is understandable

Review 105:Great view across the harbour Fantastic location Friendly staff Fabulous breakfast Lovely clean rooms The shower was amazing Drinks in room topped up every day

Review 106:The en suite was a little on the small side both the toilet and the shower. There was a glass shelf across the sink which was sited to low and caused a problem when rinsing your face. The steak at the evening meal was overcooked and the staff were not very attentive we were not asked about the food and were not overly impressed with the breakfast either. We have eaten there before and it was very good

Review 107:The room was clean tidy and spacious. The young lady on our arrival was welcoming, efficient and greeted us with a smile. The location is really nice.

Review 108:Nothing to dislike

Review 109:The location was very good the room was clean and spacious, nicely decorated with sea shore theme, very good value for money. The Penwig bar/ restaurant are clean and fresh the food was very good. The staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our 3 nights there.

Review 110:- Seaview in our room (not all) - Room comfortable, well decorated - Excellent breakfast - Very friendly staff - Very short walk to seafront/harbour - Decent amount of complementaries in room

Review 111:The location of the hotel is ideal! We really enjoyed our 2 day stay and would go there again. Only downside was the window did not open fully and the room was quite warm in the night. Other than that it was excellent

Review 112:NOTHING

Review 113:EVERYTHING...THE LOCATION THE PEOPLE THE VIEWS THE DOLPHINS...BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD.......BACK AGAIN NEXT WEEK FOR ANOTHER BREAK ....CAN'T WAIT!!!

Review 114:lovely views of the harbour. good selection at breakfast including fresh fruit. extremely good value for money. staff very friendly and helpful. situated right on the sea front. Best room is room 5 but rooms 3 and 6 also highly recommended.

Review 115:No Guinness!

Review 116:We stayed for one night in order to meet up with family who were on holiday in the area. This was a last-minute booking and we were so pleased to discover our choice had been so successful! We certainly plan to return in the near future.

Review 117:The room was a bit small but had everything we needed and fine for our short stay

Review 118:All the staff were very helpful and friendly. The location was very central but we did not hear any noise

Review 119:Parking could be difficult.

Review 120:The view and location are amazing, right on the sea front. Most of the staff were lovely and friendly and efficient. Breakfast was good, nice comfy room.

Review 121:Breakfast was a bit average but for the price paid for the room what more can you expect.

Review 122:Just returned from 4 night Mon to Fri stay. Excellent value for money. Superb location, clean & comfortable rooms. Ask for room 3 at the front of the hotel it has loads of room and the best views in the hotel. Yes you do get a bit of noise from the terrace in the evening but its not excessive. Take some ear plugs! . Its the locations and quality of the rooms and friendly staff that make this a excellent stay.

Review 123:It would be unfair to say it was a dislike but for us the mattress was slightly on the hard side.

Review 124:Heart warming friendly and extremely accommodating. We had a very late arrival and the lady in charge saw us swiftly to our room and had drinks waiting for us by the time we had unpacked. The breakfast was of a very high standard and our every need was catered for and we will be returning in the near future.

Review 125:the door to the twin room downstairs could not be closed so if you were going with others might be inconvenient as the shower room was also downstairs

Review 126:we stayed in a family room that was very spacious but going upstairs to the main bedroom i found the roof a bit low being over 6ft tall

Review 127:i found the bed hard but got used to it after the first night .

Review 128:loved the location overlooking the boats in the evening, staff very friendly and helpful and the room had everything you need.I would opt for room 1 again as although its on the side with a small sea view its better if you dont want stairs.

Review 129:noisy at certain times but only to be expected due to location annoying persistant music beat early in morning and late at night dont know where from

Review 130:room was great, bed great very clean, modern ,location great food good, staff good, good value for money, parking for hotel at rear good

Review 131:We stayed in room 2, the mattress was quite hard & found the room was a little bit small.

Review 132:Windy weather caused outside awning to keep banging during the night.

Review 133:Really friendly staff made our holiday.
