Reviews for Hotel du Vin Winchester
Review 1:Lack of attention to detail- no slippers, only one towel. Poor choice of country breakfast.
Review 2:Good location, clean, friendly polite staff. Good choice of cooked breakfast.
Review 3:Impossible to switch off the air fan (I like to sleep in silence). The towel rails were not hot (but I don't really care).
Review 4:Nice atmosphere, in the rooms and in the restaurant. Close to the bus station E1 to Southampton.
Review 5:The heating didn't work in the bathroom so quite chilly but Chrissie came up with solutions.
Review 6:Staff were absolutely delightful. They obviously enjoy where they work and they couldn't have been more helpful. Particularly Chrissie. A delight.
Review 7:Room very warm and aircon not very efficient. Food ok but nothing special.
Review 8:Excellent location for a stroll into town. Charming bedroom with character but room very dimly light and central light not working in bathroom. We had a very competitive price for this stay which helped.
Review 9:Small room and facilities barely adequate for the price Staff quite detached; not especially friendly Tiny beef sandwich squares of very average quality in the bar for £6 to 7 seemed predatory
Review 10:Reception ,bar, bistro very stylish Very good location Availability of parking
Review 11:High quality standard of hotel, we do love the Hotel du Vin hotels. Very good clean room, excellent dinner in the Bistro in the evening, good quality breakfast. Staff very helpful and friendly.
Review 12:Noise from other guests in early hours, 3.00 am then 5.30 am I know it's Christmas but I had to work and needed sleep.
Review 13:comfortable bed, real milk, staff, food
Review 14:Hotel had problems with its phone system, causing room phone to ring during the night.
Review 15:Upgraded to an excellent suite for a very modest cost. Bistro dinner first class. Good location for all local attractions.
Review 16:No body in attendance in the bar area to had ask to be served. I think property short staffed. Breakfast service also very disappointing.
Review 17:Front of house ladies lovely - very warm welcome and lovely start to the stay. Room very small for the price.
Review 18:The bed was small and too hard, the room was dark, really dark with allthe lights on! There was no bath oil :( only one bar of soap which wehad to move back and forth, the supplies were not replenished after thefirst night, so no more 'bath gel' and only towels laid out forone. We were told there were 'extra towels', apparently meaningone each. I had to look in the cupboard to find mine. Not impressedespecially as we 'treated ourselves' to a 'nicer hotel'than my colleagues, but they had bigger and better beds in properly litrooms! We had stayed in Hotel Du Vin in Brighton a few years ago andvery much enjoyed it. We won't try them again. The Cote Brasseriearound the corner even had better and cheaper food...
Review 19:The staff in the bar and reception were very helpful. Special thanks tothe excellent barman. But the wines were pricy and were better value andfresher at the Cote Brasserie around the corner...
Review 20:The room (Fullers) is quite the worst room I have stayed in in the course of numerous visits. If I thought I'd be allocated this room again I would cancel my reservation. It is poor value for money.
Review 21:The hotel is well situated for the reason for my visits. The staff are unfailingly pleasant and helpful - a big plus point.
Review 22:When I last stayed the hotel was good value. It is now expensive for what is available and the rooms do not include breakfast. The room lighting is incidental and poor. I did not have dinner at the hotel but I hope the dress code is better than what came in while I was having breakfast. Come on lets have some standards! I will not be in a hurry to return.
Review 23:Kept awake until nearly 1am combination of a corporate party underneath our room and very very noisy industrial kitchen extractor fan which was not turned off until 12.30 pm and on again at 6am. this was real noise pollution. Had to ring reception at 12 30 re party noise below our room and in the garden
Review 24:Staff were friendly but inexperienced when dealing with problems.eg noise ,slow service
Review 25:The bar was not too busy but only one member of staff who didn't acknowledge guests waiting to be served. Mainly mixing cocktails which took time. Perhaps add a member of staff!
Review 26:Great location, lovely rooms
Review 27:The dinner in the Restaurant was a disaster. Overpriced, badly cooked. My fillet steak cost over £29 for nothing more than a small overcooked steak. Chips were an extra £4. There is no lift so to reach my room on the second floor I had to carry my case up 2 floors
Review 28:Friendly staff other than in the restaurant, very efficient check in, free WiFi
Review 29:Floorboards in bedroom constantly creaked as did the ones above us. Bed was on a slant not sure if it was the bed or the floor. Pillows terrible . Poor nights sleep . Unfriendly barman and quite rude. Didn't get the feeling the staff were happy in their job.
Review 30:The central location
Review 31:Convenient on site parking and a warm welcome. The bedding was as comfortable as promised and the coffee machine in our room was a great touch! Great spacious bathroom. The restaurant had great character, the maitre d'hôtel was very knowledgable and the food delicious.
Review 32:The toilet in our room was hard to flush, I reported it but the problem did not get sorted despite reporting it before we went into the town for 3 hours. There was quite a bit of black mould/discolouration on the grouting in the shower which I discovered in the morning before leaving for my meeting. In the toilet there was no means to turn on the extractor fan and their was dust in the wardrobes. Our overall stay was enjoyable but when I am paying £300 for one night in any hotel I expect the room to be tip top.
Review 33:The staff were very pleasant, common space attractive and the breakfast good.
Review 34:Dreadful for parking. Had to move the car at a later point because we couldn't park in the hotel car park.
Review 35:Our 3.00 pm. lunch booking was one hour late before they could offer us a table but we were offered food from the cold buffet to eat in the bar whilst we were waiting.
Review 36:Small room overlooking street. Noisey at night. Cramped, small tables in restaurant with unclean wooden tables with no clean table cloth. Rather small and grimey bar area. Nobody offered to help with luggage on departure.
Review 37:Quite good food. Easy to get to Winchester town and cathedral. Very clean and high grade bedroom.
Review 38:No bad experience but negative comments include the room looked messy because of leaflets, notices, wine bottle on show for sale, tried to be a bit too trendy but dated bath in room, not in keeping with period, decorations/paint work not touched up. A lot could be learned from Soho House. Products for sale on display cheapened the look. No delivery of ice in evening
Review 39:The building, the warm welcome, the selection and service at breakfast, v relaxed feel to the place.
Review 40:See above
Review 41:Beautiful room, pretty courtyard. Friendly staff, but waiting staff inexperienced. Food very disappointing, and overpriced. Wine list pretentious and overpriced
Review 42:room too dark drinks very expensive
Review 43:great bed and bed linen lovely big bathroom great outside area for eating and drinking receptionist Kaylee very helpful
Review 44:A small sitting area/room in or near the lobby would have been handy while waiting to meet friends or for a taxi but that's the only thing that wasn't fabulous about this hotel. Would have liked to have time to have stayed longer.
Review 45:Very comfortable beds, breakfast and dinner delicious, lovely courtyard and garden for drinks and meals
Review 46:Winchester.
Review 47:The staff were great. The place is probably one of the nicest bars and restaurants in Winchester... but thats not saying much about Winchester.
Review 48:There was a Bar but there was no sitting room area to have quiet discussion. The bedroom cupboard reeked so strongly of moth balls we kept our clothes out of it. Pricey.
Review 49:The courtyard outside was a good asset. The staff were helpful and friendly. The food was well presented.
Review 50:Nice staff, plus a free upgrade to a suite which went down very well. A well-equipped room, comfy bed and huge bath in the middle of the room went down well.
Review 51:Too noisy: Our room seemed to be situated near an engine room where there was a constant drone until 11:30pm then again from 6am. Then the radio alarm went off at midnight without us setting it, waking us both up! Too fussy: This is an expensive hotel so we do not expect to have products (wine, snacks, water) positioned everywhere in the room for us to purchase. The constant emphasis on spending even more money there (including trying to get us to book dinner there too) becomes tiresome and would prevent me staying again.
Review 52:Beautiful building and location. Furnishings and decor generally tasteful and thoughtful. Nice staff. Great breakfast.
Review 53:The combination of dark paintwork and low lighting made to impossible for me to read the paperwork that I needed to work on for the following day (not all work is completed on a laptop). The room needs one lamp with enough light to read a book. Although the room had a hair dryer, there wasn't a mirror over the desk, so impossible to do hair and make-up comfortably. And I had to resort to balancing a small mirror on the window ledge to sort out my contact lenses. No real thought given to female guests or guests on a business trip. The mattress on the bed was uncomfortably hard. I ordered muesli with fruit for breakfast - and got inedible rock hard granola with a sticky over sweet fruit 'compote'.
Review 54:Our bedroom was spacious, with a well designed en suite, great shower and high standard of cleanliness. It had the potential to be wonderful - but - after being initially pleased with the room it became apparent that it was lacking certain basics.
Review 55:i honestly can not think of anything!!
Review 56:The staff were all friendly and very helpful, my whole experience was fantastic and I will definitely be staying again!
Review 57:My only criticism would be that they could be more generous with the nespresso capsules in the room!
Review 58:A lovely escape from the kids! Beautiful hotel in a great location. Great to have a brilliant restaurant on site too
Review 59:Our heating was not working and could not be rectified meaning we had to change rooms. In the next room the television had no volume and that needed a member of staff to rectify it. The staff were obliging and money was deducted from the bill
Review 60:Easy to get to and lovely outside courtyard
Review 61:Our towel rail was not working; There was nothing in the room to provide the wifi password or notify us of breakfast times or how to adjust the central heating etc.
Review 62:The Hotel was comfortable and warm, the facilities were good and the free news paper was a nice touch.
Review 63:Beautiful building, clean and comfortable rooms and tastefully decorated too (we'll be borrowing some ideas for our new house...!) Staff were very pleasant and professional as well - thoroughly recommended!
Review 64:Tired room! Poorly maintained - caulking around tub messy and poorly applied. Noisy doors in corridors. Since the new company bought them out, gone downhill. Sad, as they used to be great.
Review 65:Staff friendly.
Review 66:The room we occupied was lovely and very comfortable but was located over the main boiler room which meant there was a constant machine rumbling beneath us.
Review 67:Friendly and helpful staff. Cosy feel to all the public spaces particularly at Christmas. Excellent food.
Review 68:Easy to get to the Cathedral where we were going to a Concert and very close to the centre of town yet quiet. Staff were very helpful and the breakfast was promptly served.
Review 69:That our stay wasn't long enough!
Review 70:The garden room was a delight, the coffee machine easy to work and the fact that we had our own Christmas wreath on the door.
Review 71:Price - expensive compared to stays in other similar hotels but service made it acceptable :)
Review 72:The location was nigh on perfect with minutes walking to all the sights and the Christmas market, great parking. The staff were fantastic, really looking after us especially on reception and at the bar. The bar food was great and reasonably priced - room was warm, comfy and a good size - lovely bath too. Highly recommend.
Review 73:The heating of the bathroom was poor as the underfloor heating did not seem to work. It was a cold place and we had to keep the door open to allow in some heat. The receptionist tried to help but even she could not get it working.
Review 74:Excellent situation with friendly and polite staff. Room was excellent and in the sun would have been wonderful to sit outside.
Review 75:This is a beautifully appointed hotel right in the centre of Winchester. Our standard double room had views of the cathedral. The room faced onto the road but was not at all noisy and we slept very well, thanks to the wonderfully comfortable bed and the extra window glazing. The staff were excellent and the breakfast was one of the best I've ever had. The hotel is not cheap but it is well worth the money.
Review 76:Upgraded room didn't feel like much of an updgrade. Bathrooom small. Double bed turned out to be two singles pushed together. I don't expect that in a quality hotel. Loud extractor fan (?) finally gets turned off around 11:30, would have made for a very disturbed night if it had continued. Still not great to have to listen to up to that time.
Review 77:Location excellent. General ambience.
Review 78:Don't stay in Meerlust! You can hear the kitchen vent rumbling loudly. We had to call reception a few times until the kitchen finally turned it off at 10:15. But wait, it's not over, it turns on again in the morning! (I should add that they did offer to change our rooms, but why did they put us in a room knowing the noise is pretty bad (yes they know) when they have other rooms available?) You need a code to leave the carpark - something the receptionist did not tell me upon checking out even though I had registered my car upon checking in. I called reception from my car at the gate and no one answered and I had to re park and go to reception only to find no one there. It was overpriced considering the noise and lack of staff at reception (our rate did not even include breakfast).
Review 79:The room had a mini fridge (i had a salad I wanted to store) Size of room was large.
Review 80:Stayed in the Renault room which when darkness fell had insufficient Lighting to prepare make up etc for the my wife, during day light hours was fine .
Review 81:Service fantastic , lovely period hotel , food good , made to feel very welcome
Review 82:Room was far too small for the amount paid, not enough room to swing a mouse, never mind a cat!! Cold chips served with dinner had to be sent back. Side order was forgotten and was then claimed to have run out. 30 min wait for cooked breakfast although they weren't busy.
Review 83:Room well equipped and nice decor. Friendly staff. Good, although pricey food in restaurant. Good cooked breakfast, hot and tasty.
Review 84:The fridge in the room did not close properly therefore when I made a cup of tea the milk was off.
Review 85:The menu in the Bistro with an excellent choice of wine.
Review 86:It is not about what we did not like more about the poor service at dinner. The restaurant manager was excellent but let down by some of his staff. There is a serious need to provide training for staff serving in the restaurant as it appeared somewhat chaotic at times. Staff also need to make it clear that cheese straws for 4 sticks cost £ 5.00!!! We were already eating our starter when the bread basket arrived!!! The overall cost of dishes on the dinner menu is high and in our opinion too high.
Review 87:Friendly reception staff. Cleanliness and comfort of room.
Review 88:Nothing. Definitely on my short list to return.
Review 89:Location, a short walk to the high street and shops, many with delightful Regency and Elizabethan bow-fronted windows. A short walk to the river and the cathedral before a dinner in the HdV courtyard in a relaxed environment, busy, obvious the chosen venue for guests preferring to eat in. Bar had local ales and a local gin.
Review 90:fullers room bit small for a couple more like a single room not much storage Breakfast could be improved fish overcooked hash brown dry
Review 91:generally good quality overall great location
Review 92:One piece of soap for washbasin and bath. No brochure explaining hotel facilities (e.g dining room times etc ) or operation of radio ,air conditioning etc .
Review 93:The room was quite good but not superior.
Review 94:1. The food just does not match the quality of the rooms, or the rest of the hotel. The menu does not reflect the local area - it is just BdV standard fare. I was very disappointed to find tinned tuna in my Salad Nicoise, which as a dish was dull.
Review 95:1. The room - very well furnished with a thoughtful array of snacks, magazines and shampoos, as always in BdV hotels. 2. Air conditioning was effective on a very hot night. 3. Position was ideal as right in the City within easy walking distance of the Cathedral. 4. From the point of view of the setting and building - this is now my favourite BdV.
Review 96:Breakfast below par experience. Cooked breakfast supplied with unwanted black hair and milk jug forgotten with tea and then hastily produced with grimy rim straight from the dirty pile-ick!
Review 97:Garden rooms a bonus and available for a small extra charge.
Review 98:Room a little warm - air conditioning not strong enough.
Review 99:Beautifully presented with charm & character. Lovely outdoor dining & bar area. Staff excellent & very helpful with requests.
Review 100:Leaving!
Review 101:The hotel was perfectly situated with access to the town ,cathedral and sites. The parking, restaurant and room were fabulous. The food and wine provided one of the best meals I have had.
Review 102:Not a single hotel or b&b in England or Wales SAS flawless and this hotel SAS no exception. This time it was the toilette that could not flush proper. Spending any money you expect that you get what you pay for, a flawless room.
Review 103:We were disappointed not to be able to get a booking in the bistro for dinner but the staff were very good in searching for alternative restaurants
Review 104:Helpful staff, and extremely comfortable bed and pillows.
Review 105:Only one arm chair in the bedroom
Review 106:Location excellent, great staff, nice hotel
Review 107:Great ambience efficient and friendly staff, generally a feel of true quality
Review 108:Rooms small and no milk in room for coffee
Review 109:Great location and hotel not as formulaic as most
Review 110:Damp in room. Dinner cold and not freshly cooked.
Review 111:Location
Review 112:Great location.
Review 113:Sofas in bar extremely uncomfortable
Review 114:Location was great
Review 115:The service, the food, the bath!!!
Review 116:Efficient staff, central location, outside space.
Review 117:Great location and amazing room. Would highly recommend this place to stay
Review 118:Toilet did not flush properly
Review 119:Large room and great location
Review 120:Ambience and location
Review 121:young lady at reception was wonderful restaurant staff ok
Review 122:would have liked better lighting in the room
Review 123:Lovely surroundings, excellent position and very pleasant, helpful staff
Review 124:expensive considering breakfast wasn't included, nor was any water or snacks within the room
Review 125:great location, great room
Review 126:Menu and food was poor.
Review 127:The staff where very helpful.
Review 128:The staff were friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
Review 129:Food was underwhelming. Lacked flavour. Eg was there any fish in the fish cakes?
Review 130:Facilities, comfort, staff & location.
Review 131:I liked the the comfort and style, it was a very nice hotel to stay in and I will come back.
Review 132:Location and beautiful interior - lovely Egyption cotton as bedlinen.
