Reviews for The Winchester Hotel and Spa

Review 1:The airconditioning system produced noises at night even though it was switched off. If it wasn't the aircon then it was bathroom noises from the floor above.

Review 2:The food was very good. Hot buffet breakfast particularly so.

Review 3:Paying to use hotel car park. Not being offered to use facilities on day of departure despite having treatments booked after check out time.

Review 4:Lovely spa, lovely room and superb breakfast.Short walk to great town centre. Free upgrade to better room.

Review 5:When I returned to room after dinner the electronic key would not let me back in. Red light flashing. Receptionist checked room number and reactivated key. Still would not let me in. On way back to reception I met a member of staff who helpfully let me in with master key.

Review 6:Quiet room, good night's sleep.

Review 7:We returned to the Winchester Hotel & Spa having stayed somewhere else for a change. There was no comparison in the overall standard of rooms, facilities and cleanliness and regard this hotel as a much better value for money option.

Review 8:Bed was so soft my husband slept on the floor the first night. We mentioned it and they put a board under the mattress which helped a bit. The second morning we had no hot water and I was supposed to be going to an interview, so got quite stressed. Hotel over charged my credit card despite paying before I stayed extra money had been taken out of my account. I felt that I would have had better value in a premier inn, less hassle and a more comfortable stay. .

Review 9:Location was good, cleanliness excellent, breakfast good although the staff were slow at clearing a table for us.

Review 10:Expensive wine prices and bar prices. Poor business sense at bar, no float when cashing up. Bar closed down and no staff around, its a hotel. Staff very young and poorly trained. Rips in bed sheets - poor house keeping. Burnt mushrooms at breakfast- come on someone a five year old can do better than your chef.

Review 11:Room a little cool at first and difficult to change temperature through aircon system Rather busy at breakfast as they warned us it would be

Review 12:very helpful Reception team

Review 13:The only negative thing would be that the parking was chargable. Out the front you have to buy a ticket at the pay and display machine or through the barrier you can settle the parking directly with the hotel.

Review 14:The dinner was lovely and the steak was perfectly cooked. There is a good gym. The room was lovely with a nice shower and the bed was comfy. Lots of parking.

Review 15:We don't have anything negative to say about our stay.

Review 16:Great room size with amenities, the breakfast was tasty enjoyed the pool facilities. We were also treated to a bottle of champagne on arrival which was free.

Review 17:We arrived on Friday afternoon after shopping in Winchester,my wife wanted a soak in the bath but there was no hot water. My wife & I had to boil the kettle to wash in the sink on first morning we were there as there was no hot water. We showered in the afternoon as the boiler was fixed but the next morning no hot water again.

Review 18:The rooms were nice & the beds were very comfortable.

Review 19:Great hotel in great location! Showers were broken temporarily but we were given a discount and staff are very professional and helpful. Will be back soon. Some of the nicest pubs I have visited in Winchester!!

Review 20:All the staff were more than helpful it made my granddaughters wedding very special Claire was particularly friendly and efficient we would certainly stay again and. Highly recommend.

Review 21:Pretty useless car park when its full there is no turning point at the end of the car park so had to reverse all the way back to the entrance, made me want to change my hotel before i even checked in.

Review 22:Nice room , comfortable bed and a good breakfast, all the staff we met were very pleasant.

Review 23:The hotel is a bit tucked away. I was given a town street map at reception but the hotel was off the page which didn't help a great deal.

Review 24:The hotel was very pleasant although the walk to the room was more like a hike.

Review 25:For £165 per night I didn't feel it was the 4 star it claims, there was no wow factor. The bedroom was nice, but compares to a cheaper Hilton, but the shower and shower curtain weren't fit for purpose so water leaked everywhere and the shower was unstable.

Review 26:The hotel was nice and comfortable with friendly staff

Review 27:Have an issue in principle with charging guests to park. It's impertinent. Do NOT use their car park: there are 2 public P&D car parks spitting distance, cheaper and free after 6pm and Suns/Bank Hols. Use these! Bathroom had no window or working fan so stagnant and steamy

Review 28:Fab location; friendly staff; room really comfortable and clean. Some reviews say it's not much more than a Premier Inn but I have to disagree: definitely more upmarket with better facilities. Didn't eat breakfast but it smelled great! Would stay again. I paid £105 B&B; thought that was fab value. Would pay up to £150 for my room.

Review 29:The room was on a angle so when it rained it kept us up all night ! , water was cold when we took a bath , tv signal always went in the tv , parking was a nightmare ! What hotel makes there guests pay for parking !

Review 30:The room was clean that's was all

Review 31:Parking Spaces too small. Couldn't get into hotel park but spaces very small anyway. Stupid arrangement of having to put council parking ticket on for 8am. Don't stay here if you want a lie-in

Review 32:Good breakfast

Review 33:Parking facilities very poor and frustrating,, We have never stayed at a hotel and had to pay for parking ???? Was not impressed! And their were other guests who were furious too! I found it dis appointing that we didn't have bath robes available

Review 34:The Staff were very friendly and polite and how clean it was , coffee and tea in room

Review 35:Only a slight minus point: the bar girl wasn't sure how to set up a bar tab but that's probably just because I was a 'cash' resident and so couldn't charge my drinks to my room account. Had the feeling she didn't get many like that!

Review 36:Everything was perfect. Even better was the complimentary room upgrade! Brilliant!! Will definitely stay again.

Review 37:Gym only a cardio no weights to really speak of. My son wanted to use the punch bag and was refused without a personal trainer on hand my son is a personal trainer!

Review 38:Very clean

Review 39:The only down point was the distance of our room from reception but this was not a real problem.

Review 40:Very comfortable hotel overall and located perfectly for our needs. Food and service excellent.

Review 41:For the standard and quality of the hotel I would have thought parking would be free - this put me off staying again. The key card was tempremental so meant our key card wouldn't swipe - was a little frustrating

Review 42:Really like the look and feel of the room we stayed in as well as the resturant - good quality food. Friendly polite staff that were always happy to help.

Review 43:Friendly and helpful staff, great location , comfortable rooms , great breakfast together with one of the best spa facilities with friendly and helpful staff

Review 44:The one problem we had was the bed was really uncomfortable.. if we stayed again (which we would) we would ask for twin beds

Review 45:The location was perfect, staff really friendly and very helpful.. the pool was a bit disappointing... couldn't really swim in it.. the breakfast was absolutely wonderful

Review 46:Staff very friendly and efficient. Facilities very comfortable. Great breakfast with plenty of choice. Would certainly use again if visiting the area.

Review 47:Guests are expected to pay for car parking, if your paying over £200 a night for a room car parking should be free, council run car park at front of hotel is cheaper bizarre.

Review 48:very clean and spacious suite, fresh fruit and plenty of complimentary tea and coffee, bed and bedding excellent with modern feel decor health suite excellent cannot comment on food or restaurant did not use.

Review 49:Sorry unable to think of a negative to write.

Review 50:On arrival efficient very friendly staff, up graded our room, waited in bar for room to be ready as arrived early. Wonderful friendly bar staff and receptionist came to find us when room was ready. Excellent room, fantastic facilities

Review 51:Could have been more variety of vegetables and potatoes with the main meals. Too many chips. Afternoon tea very basic sandwiches.

Review 52:We were given a free room upgrade. Spacious comfortable room. Bar was a very pleasant place.

Review 53:I thought it was very overpriced. The hotel room was small and tired looking and took 2 lifts and a long walk to get to. The facilities in the room were poor - tiny tv and the bathroom was very basic.

Review 54:The good thing about this hotel is the location.

Review 55:The Heat! The restaurant and bar were like a sauna, ridiculous. We ate elsewhere the 2nd night, just could not cope with it. Such a shame because they would have got nearer a 10 out of 10 if were not for the heat!

Review 56:Lovely hotel, nice staff, not as lively as they could be on reception, but good in the restaurant and bar. Really good food, comfy bed, spacious room.

Review 57:Parking the fact that the council car park is in front of the hotel is miss leading and can cause confusion , leading to a fine.

Review 58:The room and the food was good also the staff was very helpful

Review 59:Happy welcoming efficient and courteous staff from the cleaning team, reception and breakfast service staff. Have stayed several times previously and always the same - Excellent.

Review 60:Longer than seemed necessary wait to be served a cocktail at bar Poor view from bedroom

Review 61:Attentive helpful staff and a good leisure centre. Quiet and airy bedroom Proxity to town centre

Review 62:I thought the price of the rooms were high for the standard of the hotel. It was nice but nothing special, we had wanted something a bit special. The hotel is basically in a car park. The hotel charges for the car park, they did put this on the booking confirmation but I hadn't noticed. It cost me £18 in parking for 2 days on top of 2 nights B+B for £240.

Review 63:The Spa staff were friendly and the pool sauna area were ok but pool is tiny

Review 64:all staff we had contact with were helpful and friendly, location was great for what we needed hotel was very clean breakfast was first class well cooked

Review 65:The secure hotel parking was chargable. The spa treatment area was spoit by a door constantly banging for the hour that my wife was there and spoilt what would have been a relaxing hour.

Review 66:My wife used the spa and had a massage, the masseur Lola was very good. All the staff I met were attentive and personable, We were given a room that was as far away as possible from the office xmas party that was on downstairs till late.

Review 67:Car parking fee was harsh, never paid for hotel parking before. Sound proofing in the rooms was poor. Sounded like a herd of elephants in the room above ours and when they flushed the toilet or ran a bath it sounded like water wsd running into our bedroom (it wasn't of course)

Review 68:On our arrival we received a room upgrade, which was a nice surprise. Reception staff were polite and friendly.

Review 69:The room was quite small, with the buildings roof cutting through the middle of the room. I could see on the fire exit/map it was the smallest on the floor yet I still had to paid £165 a night. The power switch for the A/C was hanging off the wall, which wasn't encouraging.

Review 70:Although the room was small, it was well presented and clean. Hotel facilities were good, and the staff were polite and knowledgeable.

Review 71:It's very big, which makes it a little impersonal, more so against the setting of a small pincturesque town.

Review 72:The hotel is fine, just a short walk away from the town centre.

Review 73:Nothing.

Review 74:All the staff were very friendly from start to finish. The pool and health club facilities were excellent - will definitely try the spa next time!

Review 75:Hotel has limited own parking, and that must be paid for anyway. That leaves the council car park at front of hotel @ £7/day. And when we arrived we could find no space in either and had to circle for ages trying to park. Also, although hotel spa is nice, a £35 massage did seem not to last for the advertised duration.

Review 76:Great breakfast! Good selection and quality. And unlike many hotels, good coffee.

Review 77:The lack of communication between reception staff and spa staff... It's as if they are not linked together... No robes available to use in the spa very disappointing

Review 78:The hotel was withinn walking distance to town centre. Friendly reception staff. Rooms a good size and clean

Review 79:The bed was very comfortable ( I am 6'4" tall) and I was also able to stand under the shower. So, a great nights sleep, great room and when you add to this mix the superb breakfast and it made for a great place to stay in a beautful city. Next time we plan to use the spa too!!

Review 80:Parking is expensive and should be mentioned, surely there should be a subsidy for hotel guests, The room we were in (room 2) could do with updating the double glazing to reduce outside noise

Review 81:We enjoyed our stay here very much., even though it was a busy time of year Xmas parties. All staff are very friendly and helpful. The location was perfect for what we wanted

Review 82:Parking charges

Review 83:The hotel is very clean and staff are very polite and helpful room comfortable and everything you need for an night stop excellent breakfast would definitely stay again

Review 84:Carpark. Muddle over hotels parking or pay and display. Air conditioning rather noisy in the night.

Review 85:Easy access to Winchester.Friendly staff.Comfortable rooms.Lovely food.

Review 86:Noise from disco one night till 12pm. Raised with reception on leaving and was given complimentary parking and newspapers as compensation. Thanks for that to the hotel. Would stay again.

Review 87:Nice rooms , friendly staff, good meals and facilities. Parking available, bus stop outside hotel to town centre.

Review 88:Restaurant and bar staff not very well trained! Had to wait quite a while for our drinks on both nights before our meals.

Review 89:Room very comfortable, very well maintained although we did have a light come out of the ceiling on the last night

Review 90:The cooked breakfast was disappointing. Despite being there at 8:30 the hot food especially the bacon and hash browns were not fresh at all. The cold selection was extensive though.

Review 91:Good sized bedroom and location was excellent for city centre

Review 92:We were on the first floor above the ballroom and it was very noisy until midnight. I rang to complain and received an apology but no mention of this was made when we checked out. The hotel was in my opinion as a frequent traveller overpriced and poor value for money.

Review 93:The room was well appointed if a little dated.

Review 94:Breakfast choice was excellent. My husband and I have completely different tastes but we could not have asked for more choice. Also the fruit was fresh!!

Review 95:Hotel facilities (pool) were closed without prior warning or offer of compensation. As this hotel was chosen due to this facility it was particularly disappointing.

Review 96:The rooms were nicely furnished and had a bit of modern class

Review 97:We didn't have time to use the spa which looked brilliant. Although that's nothing to do with the hotel and everything to do with simply a fly-by-night stay.

Review 98:The staff couldn't have been more helpful. made a reservation elsewhere and the owner of the B&B wasn't there, so we made this booking last minute. The staff helped with taxis, maps and generally made a hectic 45-minutes prior to a restaurant booking in town very simplistic.

Review 99:Think it is a pity that hotel charges for its own parking spaces but recognise that parking a major problem in Winchester

Review 100:Very clean, comfortable. Staff helpful and welcoming

Review 101:Bad parking, lucky to get a space. Breakfast very poor, ran out of things two mornings and we did not have late breakfast. Got charged for bar bill and did not use bar.

Review 102:Leaving

Review 103:Relaxed atmosphere, friendly helpful staff and the hotel not too big. Cleanliness of hotel and close to the railway station, tho a bit further from the Cathedral. Having said that, if one is mobile, then its about 15/20 mins walk. Breakfast very good.

Review 104:Terrible service in the restaurant at breakfast. Long queues for hot food , had to wait 20 minutes for coffee.

Review 105:Location. Close to shops and Christmas market.

Review 106:Service at dinner was disappointing but this was resolved to our satisfaction with the Maitre D.

Review 107:The location was very good and the staff were very polite and helpful. Great facilities.

Review 108:The room was disappointing as the floor boards were very squeaky and the bed sagged in the middle. The shower was not good as the temperature fluctuated without touching the thermostat. We could hear music until gone midnight

Review 109:Food was excellent and staff were helpful and friendly

Review 110:Poor signage meant hotel was not clearly identifiable on approach, Location on a car park and payment for parking

Review 111:good breakfast, clean room with fridge and tea making facilities

Review 112:Nespresso machine broken. Reported it on arrival - not replaced over 4 days. Bedroom [Grand Suite] looking tired with cheap wood cupboards and drawers but good facilities.

Review 113:friendliness of staff and excellent food

Review 114:Overpriced, apart from having a spa attached this hotel doesn't offer much more than a good Premier Inn, but charges central London prices (in fact more than central London) £255 for a Saturday night is excessive. Breakfast ok, comfortable room, hot water in shower took forever to come through,

Review 115:good parking, no queues at breakfast,

Review 116:Location is poor (really far from the center); the hotel is very dated and needs a renovation; the rooms are small; the price is too high for what you get; so overall the rating of 8.3 is a bit of an exaggeration.

Review 117:Generally clean hotel; the staff was trying to be helpful.

Review 118:Not bad as such but to ask three members to get a Tea with breakfast was disappointing. Plus a small dispute over parking costs. Was resolved by management

Review 119:Room / Facilities / Vibe / Cleanliness

Review 120:The cost of parking was a bone of contention. On the phone we were told the cost would be £7 pounds a day and at the hotel they charged £9. But really I think it is wrong to have to have to pay for parking at all.

Review 121:Very nice rooms and helpful staff

Review 122:Had to run basin tap for over two minutes to get warm water and even longer for hot. Having paid £285 for 2 nights B&B I think it a bit much to have to pay over £20 for using the Hotel's car park

Review 123:Staff very friendly; good breakfast. Good location for what we wanted to do.

Review 124:We were put into a room where it was known the heating did not work - hence a small portable radiator had been provided. When we complained the duty manager lied to us about heating problems and was supercilious treating us as elderly idiots who did not know how to operate the sophisticated system.and did nothing to improve the situation although it was the coldest night of the winter.

Review 125:Warmth of welcome and appearance of room

Review 126:Complete lack of explanation of the imminent exodus from a Blood Donorsession. This required a 20 minute procedure to and fro throughReception area , whilst we were having a tasty Bar Snack. The RED CARPET was reversed and it covered the exit route . The Member of Staff [ Duty Manager?] laid the carpet immediately in front of our seating on Reception Settee. He made no attempt to indicate what he was doing , in preps for the Blood Donor.staff 's long- drawn exit. He was , however, plainly evident for some ttime, behind the Reception counter but made no attempt to explain or apologise for the regrettable nuisance incurred The importance of the Blood Donor event is fully understood[ my husband a donor through 30 years] but the lack of appropriate information , before or after this intrusive episode , is cause for much regret. All else in our stay was admirable !

Review 127:Everything bar one unpardonable item-

Review 128:Room smelled of stale old smoke so needs decorating. Male Manager on reception has unfortunatel bad B.O. Pool area needs updating.

Review 129:Restaurant food excellent. Comfy bed. Close to station and town.

Review 130:The staff were friendly and helpful , restaurant and food was lovely .. We really enjoyed the spa facilities and the bedroom was clean and very comfortable . The bathroom was clean and water was really hot and a good powerful shower .

Review 131:hotel car park full throughout our stay which meant we had to get up at 8am to put a pay and display ticket on our car. breakfast was terrible.hot buffet items were not available for long periods so by the time they came out the rest of food was cold. buffet table was far too small to cope with the number of guests. guest we seated on small drinks tables which meant some items such as tea / coffee pots had to be placed on the floor

Review 132:Very squeaky floorboards, dust accumulation in certain areas of the room and the hot water took ages to get hot

Review 133:On arrival we were told we had a complimentary upgrade! Hotel foyer and communal rooms very good. Excellent breakfast with plenty of choice and availability. The hotel parking was payable it was secure and the rates were favourable. Location was quiet and about 15 minutes walk into the centre

Review 134:My room was freezing cold and this wasn't resolved during my stay. I was given a plug-in electric radiator.

Review 135:The spa is good and the breakfast buffet has a lot of choice and is good quality.

Review 136:Car parking. Hotel car park full so have to use public spaces at front. Ought to offer a concession / permit to guests who are unable to use hotel spaces. Breakfast bar not ideally situated / bit chaotic with people queuing with staff waitering and others trying to get by.

Review 137:Good all round facilities. Excellent Customer service
