Reviews for Bell at Boxford

Review 1:I think the landlady owned a dog as when we arrived we had to clamber over it to get to our room through the bar. The landlady made no attempt to move it. We also saw another couple had the same problem and managed to tread on it. Also wherever you looked the bar and restaurant is full of clutter. Another thing the dog kept barking when it wanted to go out but the landlady made no attempt to do it herself but would shout for a member of staff to do it. All the staff were busy but she made no attempt to sort it out herself. To be honest we were in the bar for over two hours and I never saw her move out of her seat.

Review 2:Room was not cleaned properly, bins unemptied, no hoovering done, the sheets looked unchanged since last occupant. The food service was very slow because of kitchen speed....food quality very average The outside area was never cleaned up..empty glasses and leaves all over the place

Review 3:The foreign staff were very helpful and attentive. The menu for the evening meal looked interesting. The hot breakfast was hot and tasty.

Review 4:Other guests very, very noisy when going to bed in the early hours, moving around in their rooms and getting up in the morning.

Review 5:Very helpful and friendly staff.

Review 6:kitchen service was a little slow at times but was made up for by the friendliness of ALL staff . The Wi-Fi service that was part of the package just did not work

Review 7:The helpfulness of the staff and how clean the room was presented on both mornings

Review 8:Our room was small but as we were there only one night it was okay. But there were some very noisy guest that drank and laughed until early hours of the morning, right outside our bedroom, literally 6 ft away, which we wasn't very impressed with. I did complain the next morning, but nothing was done. These people who I am talking about were drunk before dinner, so you can only imagine!!

Review 9:Staff were lovely and the breakfast is just what you need to start the day.

Review 10:Breakfast was very limited compared to other B&B's, no fruit or yoghurt on offer, only full English, or any combination off full English and cereal and orange juice on offer

Review 11:Friendly staff

Review 12:Breakfast was very poor. Very small portions and it appeared that the food, except the eggs, had been cooked in time for the start of the breakfast period and never kept warm. Also during week days breakfast finished at 8:30 which is far too early for guests who were visiting the area. It would be OK for business travellers.

Review 13:The friendly staff and choices for evening dinner

Review 14:i stay at approx. 12 different places a year -and have done for 3 years now- and the bell is my new favourite , nothing is too much trouble - everything you need is there - the wifi actually works in the rooms ! the staff and locals are friendly and relaxed - the breakfast was very good indeed the area lovely - i really have no negatives whatsoever - i will and have recommended the bell to all my friends

Review 15:Secluded location although town not far away. Bar and friendliness more than made up for it though

Review 16:Great friendly people. Made to feel very at home. Seemed like they cared that I was comfortable rather than just taking the money.

Review 17:Like at some quainter hotels, the smokers outside were annoying after 11pm. I had to have a word or two! Did improve, but not fully. I think the hotel should ask smokers outside, to stay away from the bedroom windows.

Review 18:We loved meeting some friends for a meal, the atmosphere was great.

Review 19:Our twin room was located in what seemed to be the rafters and the bathroom door would hit the bed when you opened it. Small room is an understatement. Other room was a fine size.

Review 20:The owners and staff were friendly. Very quirky place, which is part of its charm.

Review 21:It was confusing on where to go for check-in. There were signs for the hotel, but a staff member saw me walk past the pub and had me come in through that way instead.

Review 22:Easy to find with lots of parking. Quiet area and the pub was quiet being as it was a Sunday night.

Review 23:Nothing!

Review 24:The location was great for an out of the way spot even though we were passing thru the area. Wonderful quaint pub inn out in the country. The hosts were the greaest.. made us feel at home, has the best evening with them as we talked visits in the USA where we were from. Plus wonderful personal stories shared. Accommodated our late dinner needs with a freshly made pizza. Would love to go back!

Review 25:Outside areas disgraceful- unclean, neglected - overflowing ashtrays- litter, clutter - access to hotel entrance an obstacle course. Wifi did not work. Garden areas full of weeds & overgrown. Room4- ground floor -looks onto 3 dilapidated sheds, abandoned furniture & rubbish. Duvet had lipstick marks & coffee stains.

Review 26:Hottest weekend of the year and turned up on Friday to find no cask ale on. Manager said that they had both run out and new one's were settling and should be available later. Alternative bottled beer was available but very expensive. the following afternoon it was clear that the cask ale was still not on. Definate lack of experience of running a bar and the younger server had no clue how to pull a pint. Breakfast poached eggs underdone. Noisy staff or staff family/friends talking loudly downstairs until very late. Room not serviced adequately. A nice stay but have a feeling that the current people running it are new and don't think the place will survive unless they get more experience.

Review 27:Nice location. Attractive Property. Staff friendly and attentive.

Review 28:A bit pricey but worth it. Not for every week when you're on a tight budget.

Review 29:Liked the food, the shower, the atmosphere in the pub downstairs. Very pleasant stay indeed.

Review 30:Very small bathroom within the room which is the reason it was marked down for facilities and value for money. Is not much in the area of the Inn had to get a taxi into Newbury.

Review 31:Friendly staff, reasonable breakfast, good sized, good quality room.

Review 32:A different mattress needed in the room we stayed in, but its all personal preference as I like hard mattresses.

Review 33:Very accommodating for my two dogs, nice touch leaving the dog bones in the room. Food in the restaurant was good, we had steak and Mediterranean vegetables. Breakfast was very comprehensive and the service was excellent. The shower pressure was superb which is very important to me, personally! There was a side entrance to the rooms which was excellent for my dogs as I didnt have to bring them through the bar and dining area.

Review 34:no atmosphere at pub ,only entertainment was t.v and ourselves.

Review 35:Good homely feeling, looked very Christmas looking . good access for public service staff very helpful with transport .

Review 36:Was not told on booking there was no breakfast on Christmas Day but that was just a minor blip.

Review 37:The friendliness of the staff. Two friends joined me for dinner and our choice of food was good. I was invited to sit with the owner for the Quiz. Instead of a lonely Christmas Eve I really enjoyed myself.

Review 38:Evening meal menu. Impressive! Let down by the number of items NOT Available. The Chef. Appears to be handicaped by either restricted buying or lack of storage facilities. I did not see the kitchen. Looking at building decor. Not very well looked after with a restricted budget.

Review 39:Warm welcome with pre Christmas decor very impressive if a little ver te top.

Review 40:Can't think of anything of any significance!

Review 41:Great food, Great beer, Great staff!!!! Paul was a great host (Unfortunately Helen was recovering from an operation and we did not have the pleasure of meeting her). We were exhibiting at the Showground and found no better way to unwind than at the Bell.

Review 42:The untidiness everywhere. There were plastic bags and papers on all surfaces. The stairs and corridors would have been difficult for a large suitcase as they were narrow and changed direction often.

Review 43:The greeting and friendliness of the staff. The bed (single but comfortable) The food. I arrived a bit late and had a delicious omelette but could have had a pizza even later. The breakfast was full English although I only had a well presented and tasty scrambled egg. No noise from M4 or A34 and yet quite close to both. Doing press-ups on the carpet in the morning and realising that the carpet was very clean (unlike several other hotels I could mention)

Review 44:Room was tight for space and bathroom was squeezed into what must have been a tiny cupboard. New shower system but in a grubby shower cubicle. IT does look like there is a lot of renovation going on, so hopefully the cubicle is next. You will however have to put up with the very small cloakroom sink to wash in.

Review 45:Nice looking bar area, Friendly and helpful staff, breakfast was good

Review 46:En-suite facilities appalling! Needs completely gutting and all new facilities, tiling and paint work.

Review 47:Friendly welcoming staff. Good atmosphere on arrival. Food reasonable quality.

Review 48:Very difficult to find due to poor signposting to the village. Our rooms window was directly onto the courtyard which had a large group of people in it making one hell of a noise until after one in the morning.Could not get to sleep !!!!

Review 49:Pretty much everything.

Review 50:Watch out for room 7 on weekend nights. Noisy party.

Review 51:Wonderful little bar, great dinners (Mr Lamb is a fine chef/cook), hearty breakfasts, and very comfortable beds. Convenient to Highclere Castle. It's out in the quiet countryside and convenient to the M4. We'd definitely stop there again.

Review 52:Room 7 is directly facing the terrace and can it be very noisy late at night.

Review 53:The friendly owners and personal service , Good location for all kinds of trips. Cosy hotel

Review 54:The room was jaded and not very clean. The bathroom was minute with a tiny basin. The bed linen was probably clean but looked crumpled and a bit off white.

Review 55:The shower was hot, the breakfast was fine. The Wi Fi was good. The situation was handy for local places of interest.

Review 56:Discovery of a 4x5 cm piece of polythene in the soup. Luke warm duck.Seafood sauce on Fish described as Bearnaise sauce (my wife is allergicto shellfish) Waiter could barely speak english and could not explainthe food Excuse for fish sauce was recent menu change " one musthave escaped being changed" but we later saw three more identicalmenus Number of flies in our room which spent the night biting me Mywife was bitten in her bed by what might be bedbugs judging by therash. Trail through corridors showing junk filled private rooms alldoors left open. Booking.com referred to antique fireplace - nofireplace in the room

Review 57:Charming landlady Nice surroundings Good breakfast Fish and soup notcharged for Fish quickly changed

Review 58:Run down Dirty, cleaning team came morning we left Draft beer tasted sour, deserts were warmed up in the microwave Bedroom Window opened on to back yard which is unkept Bathroom needs upgrading Photos on website not a true reflection.

Review 59:George Free wifi

Review 60:The room was very noisy, it was over the beer garden. The price I paid for 2 cans of hot coca cola was five pound. Absolute RIPOFF. Cannot justify these prices and would not recommend these premises on this basis.

Review 61:Some parts of the pub/hotel were looking a bit tired and in need of a good clean or refurbishment

Review 62:Food in restaurant was excellent Good Location for the area we were in Very Dog Friendly and both our dogs were welcomed and treated well.

Review 63:Staff in the evening at bar didn't seem very organised but could just have caught them at a bad time.

Review 64:Breakfast, room, location - a very pleasant stay

Review 65:It was fine - but usually other places are a little more tidy and there were some little corners which were dusty - but otherwise it was very pleasant

Review 66:Nice people - cute village Good food

Review 67:At £85 per night We expected a lot better. First impressions not good as had to manoeuvre our way around publicans, drinkers and dog in bar and than back again to get to our room. Up the stairs past the very untidy office overflowing into corridor full of clutter. The ensuite bathroom was grubby as was the rest of the place. On a Friday night only 6 people eating, no locals. The food was ordinary, my fish batter awful. Breakfast food was OK but everything needs a good clean: Dirty ring inside my cup and juice glass not washed properly. Will not be staying here again.

Review 68:The location was good as am researching family history in that area.

Review 69:We thought this place was Cozy and comfortable. Nice and Clean! We enjoyed our stay, good fish and chips for dinner, and a Great Breakfast.... Owner Helen was a Sweet Lady!

Review 70:we arrived to find dog mess outside our room, the drinks at the bar were overpriced and the barman tried to charge us twice. the route back to our room was full of rubbish and mess, then the hostess was cussing about another guest in the bar with other paying guests still in there. not good, will not return.

Review 80:Disappointed to find that the evening meal was microwaved, for the price charged, I expected fresh. Breakfast a bit on the small side.

Review 81:Ambitious meals which didn't work. Breakfast overcooked

Review 82:Cheap!

Review 83:I loved the family feel of this place, although I arrived late at night, I was made to feel welcome straight away and the room was comfortable.

Review 84:Toilet and shower needed decorating.
