Reviews for The Chequers Hotel

Review 1:No lift & there are a lot of corridors/doors to get to rooms

Review 2:You step outside the front door & you are in central Newbury. No need to get the car out of the (free) car park !

Review 3:Shower would not function and the chair suppied was in a poor state of repair...legs were loose and could cause an injury if had it failed

Review 4:Hotel room was overall very clean

Review 5:The staff allow a large group of people from Capita to reopen the barpast midnight when we clearly loud due to already being drunk. This would normally be fine but my room was directoy above the bar with no sound proofing and old thin floors. Could not move rooms after asking the night porter who doubled up as the barmen! Also would not move the group of people as they were from "capita" as he kept repeating. Could get to slepp until they had finished which was 4am. Not good for a work trip!! The second night had a ceiling leak which was left after reporting to the porter saying there was nothing he would do, not even after I suggested a bucket! I would have stayed again if they had addressed this as a large apology and not charged for the first night at least. All they knocked off was a the £10 breakfast charge. Not happy and will not be staying again.

Review 6:Breakfast is good

Review 7:My wife & I stayed at the chequers for the second time & we're very happy with the service we received, we will be staying again next year.

Review 8:This hotel needs a serious update & complete refurbishment - obviously plays on its location (ideal for town centre and racecourse) but am not exaggerating when i say its one of the worst hotels I ve ever stopped in - bathroom was terrible and there was no double glazing so no chance of a decents nights sleep either - you would be better off at the local premier inn !

Review 9:the full english buffet breakfast was the highlight of the stay to be honest

Review 10:Loud footsteps from above accomodation at 03.00 hrs which lasted an hour, so sound proof treating very much needed. My sister had her cereal bowl at breakfast time snatched away before she had finished. Serving person later apologised.

Review 11:Great location, right near pedestrianised shopping centre. Lovely spacious room in extension part. Able to check in earlier than stated, which was very helpful. Good breakfast, nice dining area.

Review 12:Whilst heat in the room was satisfactory the rest of the building including the bar was very cold.

Review 13:Everyone was very helpful and pleasant, the food at breakfast and dinner was good. it is obvious that needed refurbishment work is ongoing and in places the hotel did look tired. we would however stay there again.

Review 14:Room wasn't available for check in at 2pm Building a bit tired with peeling decoration and water damage to wood in bathroom. Our room overlooked the main road which was a bit noisy in the morning

Review 15:Clean room, comfy bed, good shower - decent enough free wifi. Value for money excellent. Great location at top of Newbury High St with easy walking access to centre. Lots of free parking in private area behind hotel

Review 16:The plumbing woke us up at before 7am after a late night with terrible gurgling from the sink in the bathroom. The pipes clunked and groaned too. So, deprived of sleep we decided to get get up. My wife wanted a bath, but the water was luke warm. Ok for a shower, but left her disappointed. A shame really because the location was great, the staff were friendly and the bed comfortable.

Review 17:The location and price were good, as was the breakfast

Review 18:Booked BBD. Should make clear it is allowance towards dinner. Not much choice and didn't enjoy what we had.Would stay again without dinner.

Review 19:Location and value for money. Good breakfast.

Review 20:Nothing significant - the building is older and therefore the rooms are a long way from reception with lots of half steps etc - still good value though.

Review 21:Location very close to town centre and car parking - perfect.

Review 22:The scaffolding lorry that arrived at 6.30am on Sunday morning and proceeded to erect scaffolding on the building next to the hotel directly next to our bedroom window the noise was horrendous ! Our room was on the main road side of the hotel so lots of traffic noise

Review 23:We had room 102 which was lovely the only negative was the ensuite which was a little tired and in need of repair, the shower was very basic and slow. Hotel was very clean. Bedding clean and nice furniture in our room. Excellent location lots of shops and restaurants around

Review 24:Had no sleep all night, people coming and going from 11pm to 6am in the next room. Was it girlsof the night??? Told the night porter but nothing done, if you want sleep go some where else.

Review 25:The coffee/tea at breakfast isn't fresh, you help yourself to a flask and it's cold.

Review 26:Lovely staff, very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and comfy.

Review 27:Nothing. :)

Review 28:I really enjoyed this hotel. Plenty of parking, very close to the centre of town, clean and comfortable room (with lovely biscuits) and nice breakfast.

Review 29:Welcoming staff at 11.30 pm Sat night and clear information on breakfast times. Large room and beds very comfy. Good location for travellers leaving Portsmouth ferry and heading up north - Aberdeen in our case.

Review 30:The room was too hot and uncomfortable but we were upgraded to a cooler very large room with absolutely no fuss and very accommodating staff - would definitely stay again

Review 31:1. We had an accident on the way and were unable to occupy the room for the first night and were happy to pay for it but were disappointed that we had to pay for two Full Breakfasts ( not taken ) as well. 2. On the second night, the Restaurant was closed due to a private function and we had to go elsewhere for a meal after a long day out..

Review 32:A pleasant, comfortable Hotel with very helpful staff.

Review 33:Young man in reception needs to learn how to smile Overall heating too warm across the hotel but particularly in bedroom (215) - and we had no heating on!

Review 34:Very good location Good breakfast Good value for money

Review 35:We didn't care for the breakfast on Sunday, you had to help yourself from the Ban- Marie, of which most of the food was cold, having said that there was still plenty of choice.

Review 36:The room was lovely, clean and comfortable, staff were very friendly and helpful. The location was ideal for the town. The full English breakfast was very good, complements to the chef, who we think had Sunday's off.

Review 37:There was nothing to dislike.

Review 38:I liked the position of the Hotel , easy access into Newbury town centre. The rooms were of a very good standard particularly for the price. The food was excellent , overall it made for a most enjoyable stay.

Review 39:We had a large room ,everything we needed was available, bed was very comfy. Staff were very friendly, breakfast was very nice, not greasy at all, breakfast room very light, clean & modern.

Review 40:The lady on reception reallocated a ground floor room when she saw I had a walking stick without being asked. Very comfortable room separate to hotel. Good breakfast and service all round. 10% off next stay (before review!)

Review 41:Was very hot (even in September with the window open) so could do with a fan or air conditioning.

Review 42:Location and parking were great and the room was excellent.

Review 43:None really would have been nice to of been greated with a smile by receptionist on arrival after nine or more hours travelling instead of being bombarded for cash upfront and information in which half of which I forgot but did pay for the room . Maybe she had just had a long day like ourselves .

Review 44:convenient for motorway . great room and facilities . Lovely staff in restaurant and a lovely town .

Review 45:A bit of a climb and hassle to get to my room, especially with luggage, and the TV wasn't at the foot-end of the bed but on the side.

Review 46:Service in the restaurant was very good.

Review 47:I did not experience anything I didn't like to be honest. Its a shame that the hotel do not invest money into essential repairs and improvements but I'm not sure of the overall market and if that would help commercially but some repairs were amusing.

Review 48:The bed was very comfortable and the room had big windows which opened up wide to enable a flow of fresh air. The breakfast was extremely good and the staff very friendly. I would definitely stay again perfect location to be able to walk around Newbury, which is very much multicultural and the shopping centre etc was very good.

Review 49:Housekeeping - the red stair edges were dirty with dried in gum and other substances. Many of the doors and passage walls are scuffed and black. Many of the windows need cleaned. The hotel doesn't sparkle with cleanliness.

Review 50:Location.

Review 51:Cant fault anything. Central location with private parking, polire and attentive staff, room spacious, comfortable and very well equipped. We ate in the restaurant - service was faultless, good menu and great prices and our toddler ate fir free. All in all a fabulous hotel.

Review 52:We had 2 rooms that were on opposite sides of the hotel. Breakfast was served in the back room with tables for 12 people. It would have been awkward to share and staff were not keen to clear a space for us.

Review 53:Beds were comfortable

Review 54:The journey from reception to the room may be tricky for the less able patron. Additionally the exterior and hallways are slightly worn but are in keeping with the age of the building

Review 55:Excellent room. Spacious with all modern conveniences. I was very surprised given the price since the room surpassed many of the more popular chain hotels. Free high speed wi-fi, comfortable bed, impeccably cleaned with large bathroom to boot. There is a large car park and it is a stones throw from the high street

Review 56:very helpfull reception moved us to ground floor room but people kept walking by and talking from 5am

Review 57:very helpfull reception moved us to ground floor room

Review 58:Could hear traffic on the road outside. The bathroom Lino was old. But this hotel was being improved

Review 59:Very quirky, excellent staff. Very clean. We stayed at the Hilton Newbury north first night and this was a better hotel and cheaper

Review 60:Nothing bad at alll

Review 61:It was an excellent location, the breakfast was good and the room was large with windows you could open if needed. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 62:No hot water in the room. Called Reception, they explained it's a shared tank and a busy time for showers, etc. Wait half an hour... Waited an hour, still no hot water. Manager came up to investigate, very friendly, very helpful, moved me to another room. Hot water worked, TV didn't. Had to retune it myself. Window opened straight onto street and didn't close fully, no double glazing or sound proofing, cars and vans going by all night, people coming home from the pubs, they all might as well have been in the room with me! Same for people passing by on the landing...Probably the noisiest room I've ever stayed in!

Review 63:It's a good location, very central.

Review 64:I couldn't get the WiFi to work. very weak signal which was inconvenient.

Review 65:Very convenient location and loved the fact that there was a door out of our bedroom into a garden with table and chairs.

Review 66:The stairs and fire doors could use a cleaning but I understand the hotel is being renovated so hopefully this will be taken care of.

Review 67:The hotel being in town and as we had no car this was a plus.

Review 68:Only problem for me was the room on second floor , at 74 and hip problems, however staff were helpful taking my bag upstairs and downstairs again.Comfortable friendly accomodation

Review 69:Very helpful, enjoyed dinner in the hotel

Review 70:On the first morning there was no cooked breakfast as the cooking facilities we were told was not working we were disappointed and we had already paid only just to have cereal toast yogurt.

Review 71:Nice big bed room with 2 seater, tea making facilities with biscuits.

Review 72:Extra bed for our daughter was disappointing. WiFi was provided by EE after registration and validation of my phone number.

Review 73:Large, clean and comfortable room. Bathroom looked older than the room, but was still nice.

Review 74:Cobwebs all over the ceilings. Peeling paint etc. Shared breakfast tables and staff who don't understand English.

Review 75:It's handy for the town centre.

Review 76:Drove past the hotel initially because scaffolding was covering signage. Bathroom needed a refurbishment. Women's toilet near the main entrance had lots of ingrained fingerprints on the door suggesting it was not thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis.

Review 77:The bedroom was clean and fairly spacious.

Review 78:No lift and steep staircases to first and second floors Bathroom appeared to be in the middle of an upgrade. New tiles but generally unfinished air. Shower did not work and the basin tap sprayed water everywhere

Review 79:This was a very short overnight stay and I did not spend sufficient time in the hotel to appreciate its good points. My bedroom was at the back of the hotel and was quiet which was a bonus.

Review 80:Some members of my party complained that the bed was uncomfortable with the springs sticking out, athough the bed in my room was ok.

Review 81:Excellent Breakfast

Review 82:There was no lift and we had a lot of luggage as it was a stopover. However, I think staff were available to help if needed.

Review 83:Very comfortable room - nice hot bath water. Ample parking. Evening meal and breakfast very nice. We used this as a stopover to Southhampton. Good value.

Review 84:The bed wasn't very comfortable and the bathroom plumbing made loud noises throughout the night. The bathroom also did not feel very clean.

Review 85:The location was good.

Review 86:There was horrible noise from the room upstairs (floor boards creaking loudly). I told the receptionist, but I cvould tell from the way he sid "I'll look into it" that there had probably been complaints before and there was nothing to be done. I ould only get the wi-fi stnding by the window.

Review 87:Attention to detail.

Review 88:I booked this for 12 people (some with partners) who were judging at the dog show I run at Newbury Showground. All of them were full of praise especially for the friendliness of the staff. I shall certainly be using this hotel again on an annual basis.

Review 89:Bathroom, no frosted glass in window and only blackout blind. Mould in corner near bath where it has been leaking for years I'd guess. Bizarre vent under sink. Breakfast no hot tea just warm water in thermal flask :-(

Review 90:Room lovely and looked refurbished very comfortable, but bathroom wasn't was old and in poor repair. Floorboards so squeaky that felt you'd wake the whole hotel

Review 91:The hotel had a musty smell, the frontage needs a lick of paint and flower boxes either refilled or taken down. Very creaky floor boards, the room was very hot so had to keep the windows open but as we were overlooking the car park there was a lot of noise early morning.

Review 92:The location is great, the room we had was really big, great big bathroom and super comfy bed.

Review 93:Place a little tired and scruffy in areas, although I'm told the hotel is about to be redecorated? Soulless reception area, but stall welcoming enough. Guest next door played a loud talk radio programme or something like that all nite ( in room 226 ) which droned through our adjoining wall! Had to bang on the wall a couple of times and eventually he turned it down. How can people sleep with all that incessant speaking going on in their room? Let alone us next door! Not the fault of the hotel but these type of idiots need to be barred!

Review 94:Service was fine. Polite staff. Plenty of hot water and well presented room.

Review 95:We were awoken by the smoke alarm. Could not get a reply from reception so we got dressed and went downstairs. Reception didn't seem very bothered or helpful.. just told us it was someone smoking in their room!?! No apology so not very impressed.

Review 96:Having stayed here previously, we thought maybe the hectic feel at breakfast was a one off but having stayed 3 times now it is normal. Breakfast always feels rushed and not relaxing, previous times we had to leave before our meal came due to work commitments but managed to eat this time.

Review 97:Location great for the town, staff very helpful and friendly, breakfast tasty and good standard

Review 98:Breakfast - allowing for the fact that everyone's taste is personal it was not good that the coffee and tea were only luke warm and the toast was comletely colorless.

Review 99:Staff very friendly and helpful

Review 100:Rogue fire alarm woke me ay !2:15 am. No one reacted. No emergency, but was awake till 3:30. Bed slightly saggy and lumpy. Fishcake at dinner fresh and tasty but had 3 large bones.

Review 101:Room available on early arrival. Quiet room requested and given. Staff helpful when taxi failed to arrive. Dinner good and some original dishes as well as traditional. Iron and board provided in room.

Review 102:no body at the bar to serve even had to wait after asking at reception and staff were around that could have served the customers waiting.

Review 103:Good location for the event we were attending.

Review 104:The stairs...I have a dodgy knee...So if you don't like stairs ask for room on lower floor.

Review 105:I stayed 5 nights over two weeks-checking out over the weekend.I had two different rooms, but the same price. The first room was more than ok-but the 2nd was MUCH better. The staff were all amazing-even checking in at 2am.Hotel is in a great location, easy free parking.!st class restaurant and very good wine list.

Review 106:The price of the brakfast was 9.5 pounds. The walls are realli thin so it is posible hera the tv of the room beside .

Review 107:The hotel is in the center of Newbury. The room was really clean and big, It was really confortable.

Review 108:The room was too warm (as was another room we had last year), it was a little dusty in places and the air vent in the bathroom was covered in furry dust. There was a slight bit of mould on the outside wall. Shame you have to phone to be let in after 11pm too.

Review 109:The location, the price, free parking and very friendly, helpful staff.

Review 110:The breakfast the first morning was not edible but the second morning we had to go to a different room with tables seating ten. There was a family gathering there who were not impressed as there was a 20 minute queue waiting for bacon and a lady adding milk to the scrambled egg to keep it moist. We did tell reception and she apologised unreservedly. Black mould on windows in bedroom also-not good.

Review 111:Location and car park.Very central.

Review 112:I didn't like leaving to come home!

Review 113:The location is perfect and value for money is always top priority when I am looking for somewhere to stay. This hotel suits me.

Review 114:The toilet seat broke. They are very flimsy and the flusher was dodgy. However, despite it being a Sunday, it was repaired.

Review 115:As above and also the meals I had were perfect.

Review 116:The Chequers is an historic coaching inn situated at the Clock Tower end of the main Newbury shopping area. It is well placed to visit the area and locality. The large car park is great as there is no need to find a space in the busy town centre car parks. All the staff were very helpful and welcoming. P

Review 117:Unfortunately the floorboards above us were very creaky and need attention. Everything else was perfect.

Review 118:Spacious and comfortable room with all necessary accessories

Review 119:1. Creaking floorboards - sleep disturbed 4 times by people in the room above room walking around (visiting bathroom ?) during the night. 2. security - door to rear of property secured by flimsy bolt.

Review 120:1. The room was clean and tidy 2. Drinks at the hotel were good

Review 121:Needed a very late check in-which was no problem.Great staff day and night. A good choice of restaurants nearby.Didn't use the hotel restaurant as I was too late.Check in and out was quick and easy.

Review 122:Generally the hotel could be classified as tired. We planned to eat there every night but were told unable to serve as they had a coach load earliest seating would be 9pm !! Oversensitive fire alarm 15 minutes after I apparently it reacts to Deodorant and had a shower the alarm went off - steam --ummm now let me guess what to you do when you get up shower - apply deodorant and then get dressed

Review 123:Good location Cheerful staff

Review 124:The fire alarm in my room went off at about 06:00am, which frightened and woke me, but didn't receive any further instruction to leave and it stopped very quickly after starting, so wasn't sure what was going on.

Review 125:The staff couldn't have been more helpful. The parking facilities were great and everything I needed for this short stay was there in the room.

Review 126:Breakfast was a bit of a free for all with large tables we had to share - coffee was not fresh. Last time we visited breakfast was in restaurant - why change? Bathrooms need updating.

Review 127:Nice comfortable large room - with plenty of space and chairs etc.

Review 128:Bathrooms really need updated. Functional but not acceptable with black mould, rusty shower pole, soap dish that feel off due to rust and towel rail taped up with gaffer tape.

Review 129:Close to town with free parking

Review 130:Staff were helpful but it wouldn't hurt to crack a smile and say hello when people come in or walk past, bit miserable

Review 131:Great rooms, comfortable beds, very clean

Review 132:Nothing, we will stay again next year.

Review 133:Very helpful and polite staff. Clean well presented throughout. Ample parking. Easy access to the town centre. Spacious rooms.

Review 134:Poor bar service and reception appeared a little unfriendly. Was told our bags would be carried upstairs by telephone, as we requested easy access room but not offered on arrival

Review 135:Right next to main shopping street and eateries, yet peaceful nights sleep

Review 136:The exterior of the hotel looked a little tired and needs some love and care.

Review 137:Room was a fair size and well furnished, everything you needed for a weekend stay was available. Location was good and an easy walk to the town.

Review 138:Sundays buffet breakfast was a let down after Saturdays very good breakfast Gave up waiting for bacon But wouldn't out me off staying at this hotel again

Review 139:Good location by town, served breakfast on Saturday very good :) Friendly staff
