Reviews for Marwell Hotel - A Bespoke Hotel

Review 1:Although clean and comfortable the hotel decor is a little dated and the pool area could do with freshening up, that said we enjoyed our stay

Review 2:Staff were very helpful

Review 3:The shower was terrible

Review 4:Lovely hotel and great staff. Lovely meal in restaurant fab bar meals. Breakfast was good. Superior Room was very clean and extremely comfortable. Quality bedding. Sky tv box able to get all the usual channels.

Review 5:Staff were very nice. I stayed in an executive double room which was pretty big and the beds are so comfortable. The jacuzzi and pool were nice too.

Review 6:For a contemporary hotel, the design was interesting and it lacked the coldness of so called modern boutique hotels. The thoughtful design and décor made for a peaceful and well run ambience. The dining was 5* + . Had never expected a restaurant of this standard, and beats many we have encountered in UK and abroad. The Staff were professional and friendly, location ideal for Cathedral and yet buried in the country. if we had the family with us, we would have been delighted to have brought all the grand children too! Went home feeling refreshed and rested.

Review 7:Strangely enough we did find several large signs to Marwell once we found it, but the route we used didn't havethem. But we found it in the end.....remember we are not all satnav users!!

Review 8:Very convenient, it was exactly what we wanted for an overnight stop. Staff, food and facilities very good.

Review 9:Wedding Guest Smokers at the entrance overpoweringly unpleasant some minor updates would improve rating like hairdryer and bathroom suites Bed leaned in to middle alot

Review 10:Almost everything was lovely ESP enjoyed the water features and Christmas decorations Staff where very nice Breakfast and dining superb The Zoo is right across the entrance utterly delightful and well worth a visit

Review 11:Because of the 'loge' style build, the corridors which connect the bedrooms with the main building are really cold! Not a major big deal, but remember to take a coat! Beds are a little too soft.

Review 12:Decent size room, breakfast was nice and self service which means you have more choice. Had a sandwich in the bar which was really high quality and beautifully served.

Review 13:The room was more basic than some of the more luxurious ones I've stayed in here. The place felt a bit empty, I was the only one in restaurant for example. Nothing like Christmas music in an empty restaurant...

Review 14:I've stayed here many times, never a bad stay. Good food, friendly staff. Fantastic value at £51.

Review 15:Compared to other experiences, it wasn't as good value for money for the cost of the hotel room.

Review 16:Excellent customer service, good breakfast and nice quality of newly upgraded rooms.

Review 17:room too hot. bathroom dated and did not look very clean shower did not work. I had to remove the shower head to get a sufficient amount of water out.

Review 18:breakfast was very good. Diverse range of breakfast food.

Review 19:Room was £109 a night far to expensive for quality , the shower never worked , turned up at 5 to a locked building rung various numbers no answer ! So went to pub for an hour , stayed 3 nights no chamber maids visited the room to change towels etc , breakfast was good although only offer full English ,

Review 20:Position

Review 21:The corridors between the bedroom areas were not heated and were freezing to walk through. Same for the cold air in the pool / changing rooms. In keeping with eco- hotels but it was very cold - people were attending hotel functions wearing blankets. But all main areas and bedrooms were lovely and warm.

Review 22:Booked this hotel as wanted to visit the zoo next door. Fantastic location - very economical style hotel. Gorgeous entrance and rooms were very spacious and well presented. Was busy at breakfast - hotel was fully booked. Had to ask twice for poached eggs which was still forgotten but the food on the buffet was lovely.

Review 23:Food was excellent, though some may find it a little bewildering. Rooms nice, but plain. Considering the woodland surroundings, which were lovely, bringing the woodland theme into the rooms would transform the place.

Review 24:Restaurant is a little pricey so pop out to one of the excellent local pubs for better value

Review 25:This hotel is slowly going through an evolution so some rooms are partly refurbished but all are large, well laid out and have views of surrounding trees and sometimes chickens. I find my stay peaceful and comfortable every time

Review 26:Room was little warm, but then we could have opened the sliding door - only noticed in the morning!

Review 27:large lovely quite room. comfortable bed clean bathroom. A real feel of being in the country. Good breakfast selection.

Review 28:The welcoming me could have been better, no greeting just a perfunctory routine, no explanation where the pool or where to fake our meals.

Review 29:Breakfast was very good although they seem to have crammed in as many table as possible in the breakfast room.

Review 30:We thought the pool area and changing rooms were really run down and needed a refurb. We also didn't understand why the large worn out area of carpet as you leave reception to enter the accommodation areas had not been replaced

Review 31:We loved the location and the staff were wonderful

Review 32:Christmas parties going on. Bar completely blocked by party guests. Second night we were woken at 1am by very noisy guests in adjoining rooms. Despite 2 complaints to reception it went on for over a hour. Next day ruined by being so tired

Review 33:Restaurant very good. Food a bit pretentious, but very reasonable. Staff very good

Review 34:We were disappointed by our room. Bed was uncomfortable, thin mattress, pillows and duvet. Had sleepless night. Bed creaked. Floor creaked. Room and bathroom tired and need urgent attention.

Review 35:Perfect location for Marwell Zoo and Winchester. Nice breakfast and good TV in room. Polite staff.

Review 36:It was impossible to tune out the piped music in the public areas. Arriving on 30 November we were assaulted by Christmassy muzak, at a volume that was more than intrusive. With regard to the leisure/exercise facilities offered these were rather limited, ie two treadmills.

Review 37:Very relaxing location off the beaten track but with great Zoo next door

Review 38:Being woken at 6am, couldn't tell if it was linen trolleys or a guest in a nearby room.

Review 39:Wonderful stay, great staff, (especially the receptionist & the waitress). Very good food, interesting pearl barley risotto. First class bedroom. Sauna & leisure facilities very good also.

Review 40:I was put into a room that had creaky floorboards and squeaky internal door. The bed was uncomfortable with a big gap at the top for all pillows to fall down. Hardly got any sleep at all. Room needs gutting and refurbishing!

Review 41:Adequate breakfast. Hotel in pleasant surroundings.

Review 42:The bedroom was very warm, and uncomfortably so, which was a view shared by various others staying there.

Review 43:Good location with great scenery. Staff very welcoming and friendly. Particualrly impressed with Iwana, in the restaurant , who made the evening all the more enjoyable.

Review 44:Disappointed with the portion sizes at dinner. Sauna was cold the Jacuzzi tepid. We did mention to the staff about the sauna who explained that it gets re set however we did wait a long time for it to heat up and it didn't. We booked the hotel for the leisure facilities and to eat in the restaurant at least one night out of our two night stay.

Review 45:Easy to find.

Review 46:Nothing

Review 47:The room was good, facilities good and everything was clean. The staff were all great and the food was excellent. Best hotel stayed at for a long time.

Review 48:Room and facilities a bit on the old and tiered side, could do with a good clean, poor shower in room

Review 49:Fantastic evening meals Convinient location - visited zoo

Review 50:Room clean, big enough and comfortable. Able to enjoy a family swim before breakfast. Staff went above/beyond helping 4 yr old to enjoy a birthday surprise. Thank you!

Review 51:The style of the hotel made it cold especially in the corridors to the rooms but also in the bar area where we spent the evening. Bar area wasn't very cosy as the two main function rooms were off this area and the hotel reception was at the other end.

Review 52:Location

Review 53:I asked for a wake up call at 6 am, but never had a wake up call. On checking the telephone, it was possibly out of order. However I woke up on time without the call.

Review 54:I left before breakfast was served, but the staff arranged for me to leave with a packed lunch in lieu of breakfast. It was easy to order food from the bar area.

Review 55:Minor thing - carpets and paintwork need some attention. Stained carpet in breakfast room.

Review 56:Due to late arrival and early departure no time to say much. Breakfast was good and staff very friendly and helpful. Great shower.

Review 57:Packed lunch/sandwiches went in the bin, tin foil used looked like it had been use before... really left a lasting memory of service in the hotel, also when I went to pick them up from the bar area they told me the receptionist had not ordered them, all in all one dept not talking to the other,

Review 58:room was nice and quiet, however the bathroom was a bit tired

Review 59:The bathroom in our room could do with being updated but when we asked a member of the cleaning staff about it she said they are currently updating these room by room.

Review 60:Size of room, cleanliness, friendly & helpful staff. Good food in restaurant.

Review 61:The meal served at the bar was very over done and not very tasty. We were going to eat in the restaurant but because it was a Sunday it was very quiet so we decided to eat at the bar instead. The food was not great and if we cam back we would go elsewhere to eat. However our breakfast was very good.

Review 62:The swimming/sauna facilities were fantastic. The room was very big with fantastic amenities such as sky TV. The service from the staff was very warm and professional. It was a really pleasant stay and we would definitely come back or recommend it to other people. Fantastic value for money.

Review 63:This wasn't the luxury hotel we were expecting unfortunately. Please upgrade your en suite bathrooms and the 'fitness centre', both of which are tired, dirty and dated. Please also build an enclosed smoking area away from the front door as we had to fight our way through a party of smokers just to get in the reception.

Review 64:The bedroom was obviously recently renovated and was lovely. It's a very quirky layout, with the log cabins

Review 65:Unfortunately when we were there the sauna didn't appear to be working, although we were able to make use of the pool and jacuzzi

Review 66:This was a "Bespoke Hotel" very different to anywhere we have stayed before. The corridors were all glass with wings going off the main corridor to the rooms which were in blocks on 2 floors. The rooms were situated "in the woods". It has been built with thought as the Marwell Zoo is directly opposite. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice

Review 67:Paid for room with Wi-fi. Despite complaining three times this was not sorted and was blamed on off-site service provider who "do not proved very good service". Also had to complain about lack of coverage in Bar area whilst two reception staff chatted despite being able to see straight to bar

Review 68:Excellent location, good views and close proximity to Marwelll Zoo

Review 69:The time it took to sort out the issues that we raised Disappointed the sauna was not functioning correctly and there was a constant draught from the ceiling vent

Review 70:Lovely location - being able to use the pool and jacuzzi The provision of a good breakfast.

Review 71:Some parts of family room were a little tired but executive room was great.

Review 72:Leisure facilities, location, child friendliness, menu for drinks and great food.

Review 73:Comfortable stay booked 2 rooms both lovely with tea and coffee making facilities, full sky channels and lovely comfortable beds. We had a bar meal but the waitress moved us to the restaurant because it was more comfortable. Excellent service. In fact I've just rebooked for another overnight stay.

Review 74:Bathrooms really need updating, very tired and old as was the bed. Breakfast was alright but bread was of the cheapest quality.

Review 75:Reception staff were very helpful and cheerful as were bar staff.

Review 76:The leisure facilities were poor 1. No showers in the changing rooms 2. No water vessel in the sauna 3. Two treadmills do not a good gym make

Review 77:Excellent breakfast and check in Bar meal was good

Review 78:No public Transport, Wifi didn't work anywhere, Food OK, but not excellent, we would have expected more for the Money.

Review 79:Location next to Marwell Zoo, quietness

Review 80:We thought the breakfast could have been better, not everyone likes scrambled eggs, sausages were not too our taste. But 2nd morning I asked for fried eggs and we got them with no trouble.

Review 81:It was comfortable, lovely Kng size bed, clean towels every day, staff were lovely

Review 82:Poor wifi, mattress topper so thick could hardly move, shower waste of time and the bar area no atmosphere was like sitting in reception

Review 83:breakfast was very good

Review 84:Only complaint. the pillows were far too soft, we did not ask for different as we were only staying 2 nights - any longer and I would have requested firmer pillows if possible

Review 85:excellent staff, great food. Hotel is a little dated but at the end of the summer season slightly worn furnishings are to be expected. But despite a few minor faults waiting to be repaired I would still give this hotel a very good rating

Review 86:Bedrooms were good deco, but bathrooms really need a refurb to compliment the overall room. Food was incredible but the deco of the dining room did not reflect this fine dining food, it just did not match. A refurb needs to be done to the restaurant, bar/lounge and corridors, all felt a bit like we were at a butlins holiday camp! Needs to be brought up to date if the hotel wants to advertise as luxury! The swimming pool also needs to be updated, felt like we were swimming in a run down school swimming pool rather than a hotel pool! There were no pool loungers to relax on. Also the young lad in grey joggers and black t shirt (who we presumed was the lifeguard?) was constantly sat playing on his phone, and was in completely the wrong attire for the swimming pool area (he was wearing outdoor trainers, when guests are asked to remove their outdoor footwear) As a qualified life guard myself, his behaviour was not acceptable especially when there were young children using the pool at the time!

Review 87:Staff were brilliant and friendly, fantastic service! The bedrooms were good, great comfy beds. Food from the dining room restaurant was incredible!!!

Review 88:The rooms were tired and not very up to date for the money we paid to stay. The carpets in the dining area were stained and dirty looking. The bed was horrendous and not very comfortable. The corridors were freezing and the lighting was not very welcoming.

Review 89:We liked the location and the breakfast was good

Review 90:My room was an upgrade on first floor. Lovely room but too hot. Public areas were too hot. Swimming pool area needed cleaning regularly when busy, particularly ladies changing room which is also very small.

Review 91:The rooms were very well appointed and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent if not a bit slow for special orders.

Review 92:Accommodation slightly tired. When I went out for the evening there was a tray of dirty dishes sitting in corridor. It was still there when I returned later that night and still there when I checked out next morning. Breakfast only adequate.

Review 93:Quiet location.

Review 94:We did not like the original room, it was not clean and was in desperate need of updating. We thought there was a spa there but it was just a pool. I tried to book a treatment but there was no answer when I tired to phone the number we were given by the hotel, so I never got to have the treatment.

Review 95:We liked the executive room we were moved to as it was newly refurbished.

Review 96:The room was shabby, the bathroom incredibly dated and cleanliness wasn't great. The shower was merely a dribble and it was always freezing or scaldingly hot! Despite coming up as a Winchester hotel, it's around 8miles away, so taxi's were £20 in the daytime or £30 late evening!

Review 97:That it was close to Marwell Zoo

Review 98:See above

Review 99:We liked the pool and jacuzzi, the bar area wa nice but wa invaded by a wedding party all night so felt abit awkward! Restaurant was nice but the waiting staff were too eager it felt abit rushed. Breakfast was good , w had room 401 which we felt wasn't like te pictures wasn't like the pictures on te website it didn't seem as bespoke felt abit dark and more like staff quarters the bathroom was disappointing the bath was small and the walk had missing tiles which made it look unfinished. The receptionist who booked us in was very friendly and helpful .

Review 100:I wasn't made aware that I would be staying in a family room. This made it cluttered with beds and little room to move. If I had known beforehand I would have asked for an upgrade. However, for a one night stay it was sufficient

Review 101:The location, the unique style and the food

Review 102:Minor points in the bathroom need addressing but the hotel looks like it is under going refurbishment...

Review 103:The food is truly wonderful with staff in the restaurant very good... All staff were excellent.

Review 104:More gym equipment would be nice as only have 2 treadmills at the moment.

Review 105:Refurbished rooms with the biggest and most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Sky in the room was a pleasant surprise.

Review 106:The restaurant was fantastic, the room and leisure facilities were quite poor and very dated I would expect more for the price of the room

Review 107:we had some difficulty finding the hotel. We came from Hinton Ampner and found no signposts at all coming from that direction. It was worth the effort and we returned for one more night on our way home.

Review 108:comfort, food. courteous staff.

Review 109:This hotel is in need of a serious refurbishment. Shower - very old, did not work properly (taps controlled at bath and battled to find right balance to have a shower. To no avail). Shower Curtain & Fittings - Heavily Stained and Worn. Bed - mattress was so old it had a large spring sticking out the top which the hotel had attempted to cover with a duvet. (This is referred to as a mattress "topper" but as you can imagine, like most people I prefer to sleep on a comfortable mattress, rather than a duvet on an uncomfortable mattress). Socket - could hear electricity fuzzing away when turning room light on and off. Sauna - Broken door top and bottom plus cold air vent into room meant Sauna was at 80 degrees max. Spa Tub - Stained and dirty looking tub.

Review 110:Breakfast - Tasty food but overpriced (£15.50 per person). Location - next to Marwell Wildlife park. Staff - Friendly, attentive to my concerns and feedback however little they could do to resolve the shower and bed issue.

Review 111:Power of shower was poor but apart from that no complaints

Review 112:The staff were very friendly , from the cleaners to reception to restaurant . Room lovely although a little hot but very large bed and very comfy

Review 113:indoor swimmimg pool could be slightly warmer . One light fitting in the room broken so should be fix. Breafast food could be slightly hotter but good selection of food

Review 114:clean room, comfy bed, restaurant food brilliant and good value for money

Review 115:Corridors cold. Breakfast help yourself so hot food left in warmers for a long time. Cold plates. By the time you had done your toast, breakfast got cold. Very dirty under toilet rim. shower flow poor

Review 116:Good size room. Swimming pool

Review 117:Would have been nice to have a cosy bar rather than it being in reception area. Shower in the room had very little power.

Review 118:Decent sized room with unbelievably comfortable king size bed. Good selection of beverages and biscuits on hospitality tray. Good range of toiletries provided. Food in the restaurant is superb....very clever cooking by the chef and his team. Over all, a very pleasant 2 night stay and would definitely return.

Review 119:Tv colour contrast did not work was ok for a minute then screen went dark Bed was too soft for me personally but may suit others Shower was very poor

Review 120:Breakfast ladies were very friendly Sky TVs Location of hotel to zoo Breakfast choice Size of room

Review 121:The room was freezing as the radiator had been turned off. The bathrooms arevstraight from 1970 and the carpets are threadbare and the room very tired.

Review 122:The location is good with convenient location to southampton and winchester. Sky TV is very good.

Review 123:I am partially disabled and room a fair distance from main complex. Very little differance iun toom between executive and standard

Review 124:excellent location with easy access to reception ROOMS spacious and well fitted with balcony to grounds FOOD EXCELLENT STAFF VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPHUL oN REEQUEST THEY MADE A BIRTHDAY CAKE FOR MY WIFE AND BOUGHT TO TABLE

Review 125:leaving!

Review 126:There was nothing not to like! The room was incredible, the whole place was tranquil and calming and the leisure/relaxation facilities were just what we were looking for for a weekend away. The breakfast was varied and delicious and the evening meal was luxurious and good value. Would recommend to anyone looking for a weekend away from it all!

Review 127:Peaceful and relaxing and close to the Zoo for our little one, everyone is friendly and the room service we had was catered for our needs even though it was not on the menu it seemed no problem.

Review 128:no working service phone in the room, no complimentary bottled water for the amount of money I paid and hand towels are a bit tired looking.

Review 129:The whole staffs are amazing from the reception to the restaurant. Special mention to Dee the cleaner, Ana the Italian waitress and Ioana the lady from Romania. Dee refused to accept my handsome tip and told me that she's just doing her job. It was an admirable gesture which changed the way I perceive customer service in the UK.

Review 130:Had to complain about protruding carpet gripper at bathroom threshold fortunately no injury sustained to foot but could have been nasty. bathroom dated and a bit shabby so only used WC which was difficult to flush. No mirror over dressing table. It appeared that access to adjoining rooms was possible from the rear steel balcony.?security issue. outlook from room rather gloomy. decor of room all a bit tired.Reception on TV not that good. Communal areas rather stark and cold. Reception staff not particularly customer friendly. Noisy wedding party in bar on arrival did not create good impression. Not come across a combined bar and reception before but do not think it works. walked out of hotel to explore grounds but not possible all car parks. disappointed that there was no real safari feel about it all and no animals visible or audible from the hotel. Reception area toilets needed deep clean.

Review 131:As we have family in the area we have tried to discover a reasonably priced hotel with a bit of character near to Winchester city and thought we would try Marwell on this occasion. Location quite convenient and bed furnishings comfortable. Breakfast adequate and staff obliging.

Review 132:The rooms weren't cleaned very well, bed was uncomfortable. The hotel was dated, carpets threadbare. Restaurant was extremely overpriced so much so that I cancelled our dinner reservation and went out.

Review 133:The staff were friendly.

Review 134:The Main Restaurant Menu very expensive we ate from the Bar Menu which was basic but ok. We dined out the second night at a nearby Pub which was better food. Plenty choice for breakfast but food in Bain Maries was cold, Suggested a Micro wave would be a good addition in the restaurant

Review 135:Good Quiet location, bed very comfortable Used as a stopover for the Ferry to Spain and was ideal as the Hotels in Porstmouth were very expensive

Review 136:I got charged for the room even though the reason I didn't stay was due to a family health emergency.

Review 137:Nothing as I didn't stay because of a family health emergency

Review 138:Hotel quite dark because of all the trees. I accept the trees were part of the theme but I prefer more light. Decoration bit tired in places.

Review 139:Lovely location and unusual hotel. Food was really good - had meal in lounge bar and it was really tasty and well presented. Also had fantastic breakfast.

Review 140:The bar menu was adequate, the restaurant menu did not appeal to us and was rather expensive.

Review 141:the bedroom was lovely, comfortable bed, although the pillows were very flat. Bathroom functional but a little dated..lots of lovely hot water.

Review 142:The bathroom let it down, as it had cracks in the sink and no hot/cold indicators on the bath taps. It looked as if it had been put together with the leftover bathroom fixtures. It was rather a letdown as I had been here before and recommended it to my wife for our 30th wedding anniversary.

Review 143:The room was very nice, clean and comfortable and the hotel was good. The staff were friendly and helpful.
