Reviews for Wykeham Arms

Review 1:We ate in the bar because of our dog and were not told of the availability of juice, cerials and fruit in the restaurant next door. A member of staff told us a waitress would come and take our order, but some minutes later we had to ask another member of staff. The bacon was over cooked and burnt, but the poached eggs were superb.. We had to ask for toast to go with the cooked breakfast and did not discover juice, yoghurt , fruit etc until after we had finished, when there was little left over.

Review 2:Pub atmosphere, furnishings, most staff, quality of meal in restaurant, well kept HSB.

Review 3:Noisy room in adjacent building needing considerable renovation. Badly cooked and high priced dinner, casual service and no recognition of complaints made on departure.

Review 4:Excellent pub bar and pub atmosphere. Perfect location for the city and cathedral.

Review 5:Nothing it was fab

Review 6:Lovely traditional pub/ restaurant the atmosphere was great and the food was amazing!! Our room was gorgeous! Beautiful four poster bed and huge free standing bath also had parking onsite :-)

Review 7:Not much parking, and we were very rudely awakened by the noisy emptying of three huge glass recycling bins outside at about 7 am, which was not ideal.

Review 8:Quirky, enchanting pub with tiny winding corridors, interesting and eclectic decorations and a really charming atmosphere. The room was comfortable, with everything we needed and it was very stylish. There wasn't much space but then it was one of the less expensive rooms. The staff were lovely and the dinner in the pub downstairs was really delicious. We will definitely return.

Review 9:The ensuite obviously needed some TLC/updating not what's expected at this price bracket. The welcome was not what I expected.

Review 10:We liked the comfort of the room, particularly the bed. The quirky and interesting paraphernalia in the breakfast area, bar and room. The location was excellent for all Winchesters attractions.

Review 11:We had room above the bar and you could hear them tidying and bottles clanging until 12.15 which kept us awake then we're awoken at 6am by the recyclers dragging trolley across cobbles then smashing bottles as they emptied it! Though latter not the hotels fault maybe they should warn you.

Review 12:Location and breakfast

Review 13:None, could not fault it. We stayed in house opposite

Review 14:Everything, great location, good staff, it has a small car park but leave your keys with the reception and they'll move it if need be

Review 15:Great location.staff excellent and welcoming in a pub with a great atmosphere.. Rooms very comfortable boutique style and well equipped..my second stay and will definitely return again..

Review 16:Parking at the pub is very limited and all parking close by is only short term so can be challenging. The biggest disappointment with this lovely pub is breakfast. Total disorganisation. Staff were very slow to take our order and we even heard one staff member mention it was busy because everyone had decided to come to breakfast at once! It took over 45 mins after ordering for an average full English breakfast to be served. We were half way through by the time the ketchup was delivered. Luckily we were early as later guests had to wait for fresh juice to be refilled and bowls retrieved from the kitchen for cereals. If you are in a rush I would skip breakfast. I would have liked the opportunity to air my frustrations but at no point was I asked if everything was ok or if I had enjoyed my stay. Throughout paying my bill the waitress carried on a conversation with her colleague! Definitely room for improvement .

Review 17:Wonderful room in the property opposite the pub. Beautifully decorated with a lovely bathroom and tea/coffee making area. Ground coffee & fresh milk a real treat. The complementary beer was also most welcome.

Review 18:Only thing I could say is I had to wait quite a long time for my breakfast on the last morning of our stay.

Review 19:The whole experience is really good. Wonderful atmosphere and very friendly staff. Breakfast was lovely. Our room was delightful and very comfortable bed. Loved the bath.

Review 20:Only comment is due to being so popular booking of meals was not a priority for residents this meant eating extremely late. Car park not big enough due to being so busy!

Review 21:Everything the comfort, food and location. Staff were excellent and very helpful. On site parking but had to accept very busy so caution with parking. Really hope to return a wonderful stay.

Review 22:Bathroom a bit shabby/dated. Corridors to rooms very tired, was worried what we'd find in our room but pleased to say it was lovely.

Review 23:Great room, good size for a twin. Very comfy beds. Location superb. Pub obviously fantastic... As was breakfast!

Review 24:A little noisy in the street early on Friday, but I slept with the windows open so that's partially the reason.

Review 25:Phil was customer service personified and the rest of the staff were great. Nice, traditional pub atmosphere. Black pudding for breakfast! Pub regular "Batman", a 140lb Rottweiler was a softie.

Review 26:We had a room overlooking the street and were woken about 6.45 by the very loud and prolonged emptying of the inn's bins - not ideal! They should avoid giving customers the street-facing rooms on a Monday night stay - or reduce the room rate...

Review 27:Great, characterful place near the cathedral with a warm welcome. Open fire at the bar, comfortable rooms and good quality breakfast.

Review 28:The single room although comfortable was too small. It was a busy time and there probably were no others available but we did not think it was value for money unusually for this hotel.

Review 29:The double room we had was excellent but showing a few signs of wear in the bathroom. everything was comfortable and clean. breakfast is always very good.

Review 30:The stairs up to the room were rather steep. Some of the bathroom fittings were a little dated. Spacers need replacing on the loo seat and lid. The shower screen was difficult to operate. A grab handle would be useful to assist in getting in and out of the bath/shower.

Review 31:The " Kelsey" room was in the annex and was excellent, if a little warm. It was a decent size with a huge bed and a large adjoining bathroom. There was a small window overlooking a garden. We were able to park safely in the pub car park and leave our car for the duration of our stay. Only 5 minutes walk to the centre of Winchester.

Review 32:Some room noise - fan of some sort nearby?

Review 33:Characterful accommodation Good helpful efficient staff Car parking in city centre lovely room with good bed

Review 34:Whilst the room was very well presented it was very small and at the top of two flights of very narrow stairs.

Review 35:All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The accommodation is in an excellent position to explore this lovely historic city.

Review 36:Lovely pub with lots of atmosphere and excellent staff and good food. I am not sure we were in the best room - two steep flights of stairs but that is something we should have checked, broken floor tiles in bathroom but clean and comfortable and charming.

Review 37:Not bad actually, but would have been helpful to know an approximate time that room was going to be cleaned. all a bit haphazard.

Review 38:Super position for all you might want to do in Winchester. Friendly and helpful staff,Great breakfasts.

Review 39:Shower room needs repainting as peeling paint on ceiling. I would have liked an internal lock-bolt or turn key as well as the Yale as a single traveller. No do not disturb sign so would have been nice to have an additional lock on the inside and don't think this is expensive to do.

Review 40:Lovely comfortable room. Nice added extras in mini fridge. Great location. Friendly attentive staff. Fantastic breakfast.

Review 41:The staff on duty of 23 10/15 particularly breakfast time could not have been more different than the previous evening staff. Rude and discourteous, ignoring us at breakfast and particularly rude when telling us that we would have to vacate the carpark having been told previously that our vehicle could stay as we were also returning after our daughters graduation for dinner in the Restaurent. We were told to move our vehicle just as we were leaving to go for the ceremony which ultimately meant that we missed the first part of the ceremony as driving around Winchester looking for a carpark big enough to take our 9 seater van. Two of our party who were elderly and limited mobility (grand mothers were very upset by the disappointment this caused them and the attitude of the young man, manager towards our party as a whole and particularly upon our return for lunch. We were not treated the same way by the staff and were treated differently to other guests. We had had to make do with two tables the night before to accommodate our party as had not booked. However for the graduation morning and dinner party we had booked a table for seven, weeks before but were still split for the celebration meal. We had to ask for several things throughout service and felt ignored and snubbed by the manager particularly who would walk past us many times enrout to the kitchen as we were right by the back door. The meal was poor and dissapointing but to complain would have looked like we were just trying to get back over the parking issue. I did however complain about my waterlogged fish and chips to another staff member and this was removed from the bill. We did not stay around for dessert like the previous evening. We appreciate the pubs policy on parking makes it clear about vacating upon checkout but we were told we could stay as we were returning and two of our party had mobility issues.

Review 42:The staff on duty Thursday 22/10/15 around 18.00 who welcomed us upon our arrival and who waited on our evening dinner were top class! We had booked three rooms and The young man who split the beds in the Hamilton suite was a credit in courteous and professional behaviour as well as the lady who looked after our needs during a wonderful dinner beautifully cooked and presented by the kitchen staff. ( lady chef i think?) It really was a pleasure being served by all and made for a memorable evening that encouraged us to look forward to the next day, our daughters graduation. However! .......

Review 43:The room wasn't cheap - more pricey than other quality hotels in the city. Wouldn't expect to find a broken toilet lid in such a room - and there was evidence that staff had previously been notified.

Review 44:Wonderful quirky old building with a real sense of history. The room up in the eaves had been well-furnished and was comfortable. The bathroom was elegantly fitted-out.

Review 45:None

Review 46:Ideal location for purpose of week's visit - study of the city and locations close to Winchester of historical interest in its many forms. Hotel itself and surrounding properties featuring such traditional elements. Proximity to public transport for reaching sites and rambling footpaths outside the city.

Review 47:Having to get into the bath for a shower with a low sloping ceiling. Not good for a 73 year old. Thought I requested an ensuite shower. It is an old pub and everything else made up for the small difficulty.

Review 48:Staff , food and atmosphere

Review 49:In an eaves room along with a tall friend, which was a bit cramped for space (couldn't stand upright in shower for example)

Review 50:Quiet yet central location, friendly staff and good restaurant and pub facilities.

Review 51:From the very friendly welcome to the comfy bed, great food and ambience of the Wykeham Arms we couldn't fault it. Will definitely return. It's also extremely popular with the locals.

Review 52:Only negative for me, having the day before slipped and damaged a hamstring, was that my room was in the Annexe and there was no elevator to upper floors. Normally it would not be a problem

Review 53:Central location. Good sized room and larger than usual bathroom. Amenities tray exceeded the norm. In addition to the usual teas, it included chocolate, ground coffee, still and sparkling water and 2 x bottles of beer - all complimentary.

Review 54:The complementary bottle of London Pride in the mini-bar was a nice touch. The location was very quiet and convenient for access to the whole town centre.

Review 55:Breakfast a bit expensive. I ordered fried egg and bacon and I got one egg and one rasher on a big plate with no toast offered. I had to ask for that and a very small piece of butter.

Review 56:Wonderful cosy pub bar and restaurant with good food. Fridge in the room with complementary fresh milk, water and beer, plus coffee, tea etc. Friendly staff.

Review 57:Very comfortable rooms and accommodating staff on special requests. Great example of how an older building can be kept current clean and modern facilities without destroying the character of the historical structure.

Review 58:In both rooms booked the central heating radiators were not working and were not working until after we checked out. The single room TV was not working.

Review 59:The food is excellent

Review 60:The Wykeham Arms was very central, very comfortable and the staff were lovely. It was close to Winchester Cathedral and the city centre, had lovely breakfasts and we had a lovely meal there one night.

Review 61:Leaving.

Review 62:Lovely room, great staff. The best sandwich I have ever eaten (ham hock and Brie). Complimentary beer in the minibar. Real milk for my tea in the fridge. If you want genuine history and charm in a traditional English pub but don't want to sacrifice service, comfort and quality this is that place.

Review 63:Can't think of anything we didn't like. Old building so inevitable sounds from room above and adjoining.

Review 64:We liked the historic theme of pub celebrating places in Winchester. Excellent food good beer (husband delighted!)Spacious and comfortable room.

Review 65:room decor was a bit jaded, but the sort of 'faded' element didnt detract from the stay Need more seats outside when its hot!!

Review 66:Loved the ambience, the staff, the food, just excellent

Review 67:Creaky bed. But it was a classic four poster so not surprising I guess

Review 68:Lovely old English Pub and Inn. Very atmospheric and in a great location in Winchester city. Staff very friendly and food was excellent.

Review 69:Fantastic old pub with lots of interesting history and very friendly staff. Great meals. Brilliant location for easy walk to the hub of the action in town. Lovely spacious room with large comfortable bed with all the extras you could want.

Review 70:The staff were incredibly friendly and made us very welcome. The room we had was beautifully appointed. I would definitely recommend a visit to this fabulous place and hope to return again one day. Thank you.

Review 71:Everyone being so Friendly. Ollie, and Angie went out of their way to meet our every need, even brought our luggage up to the3rd floor room on the day of arrival. Love the breakfast and dinner food also. Just great place to stay in Winchester. The lady that took us to the train station on our last day of departing was so thoughtful. She was sweet. Thanks again for 3 wonderful days in paradise.

Review 72:Beautiful property. Lovely bedroom with nice touches like fresh milk in fridge, cafetiere with freshly ground coffee in the bedroom. The bathroom was fantastic with a double shower and roll top bath.

Review 73:This hotel is in a great location, it is full of old warm charm and history. You really feel that you are staying in an "old English pub". We were surprised to find that our room was newly renovated with a large bathroom and a really comfortable bed. The staff could not have been more warm and helpful. Great breakfast as well!

Review 74:Ensuite bathroom doors in Chapel View room were awful. Didn't close fully and let light through right onto person in bed if bathroom was used during the night.

Review 75:Staff were lovely and the pub itself was very nice.

Review 76:Requested a shower , but the bathroom was tiny ,and shower only a fitmenton the bath ,impossible to stand upright .fine for one night ,but still not wnat we had asked for !

Review 77:Creaky floorboards but not a big problem part of the character

Review 78:Full of character, great service and staff. Excellent locally sourced food. Free car park. Very central.

Review 79:The single bedroom is no more than a cupboard and should be avoided at all costs. Its claustrophobic and inadequate as a bedroom

Review 80:The bar and restaurant area are a pleasure to be in.

Review 81:Main issue was the lack of A/C with temperatures in the top floor unacceptably high. Notwithstanding winter duvets on the bed! Curtains frayed, shower uneven and ran way too hot, one window could not be opened fully and noise levels high early morning

Review 82:Location excellent except for the access to the car park. Quirky warm welcoming nicely run pub with friendly staff. Meals well cooked and service very good.

Review 83:We chose the Wykeham Arms for its character and its proximity to the Cathedral. It exceeded all expectations! Our room, in the annex, was the most beautiful of all we stayed in in England. More like a suite, really. Food and drink of the highest standard. Sian and Annette are wonderfully friendly and professional. Can't say enough good things about the Wykeham Arms!

Review 84:n/a

Review 85:All staff were very attentive to individual needs and wishes, showing respect at all times including privacy. Food was excellent and very accommodating to any requests. The room was bright, beds comfortable, in the quiet location of the annex - even had its own lounge and garden area!

Review 86:Very narrow staircases were exceptionally difficult to negotiate with luggage

Review 87:Fabulous location adjoining the Cathedral. The interior design of the main building is impressive . The restaurant deserves a special mention for high quality food. Free parking for guests

Review 88:The bathroom had such a low ceiling the shower was unusable unless you kneeled down. Also the extractor fan in the bathroom/toilet was not working.

Review 89:The food was first rate. The roast belly of pork was probably the best I have eaten.

Review 90:Bed sloped backwards, pillows uncomfortable and waiters at dinner and breakfast could be more alert and attentive to needs

Review 91:Location Ambience of pub Food at dinner and breakfast

Review 92:It is tricky to find this Inn but Siri was our salvation!

Review 93:The staff is friendly in this cozy delightful pub! Our dinner was expertly prepared with a fresh modern approach to pub cuisine.

Review 94:I did have to climb three flights of stairs to our room, and stairs are not easy for me, but it was my own fault for not mentioning it. And it was a lovely view from there! Oh, and there is no shower which made for a watery mess.

Review 95:The staff was so helpful and the food was wonderful. Plus, I loved our room; it was bright and spotless.

Review 96:the restaurant was so interesting. our room was lovely..we were put across the street. we were disappointed we weren't in the main building as we booked. but overall it was a great visit .

Review 97:a historic old pub..hotel. great location.we got a real feel of uk history

Review 98:There was a party going on outside the room which was noisy. However after speaking to staff they sorted this prior to 11pm.

Review 99:Great location and the staff were friendly and approachable. I ate at the pub in the evening which was fully booked and I quickly found out why!! Fab food and breakfast.

Review 100:The streets are narrow an infested with cyclists but, heigh, we are in Winchester.

Review 101:Choc full of relics of Wykehamists, right by the cathedral and Jane Austin's house, lovely courtyard with parking for guests. Great restaurant. Little rooms but with views to adore.

Review 102:The staff were very polite and friendly. I was also given 2 complimentary beers and 4 bottles of water. I found the food to be of a very high standard. I also liked the general ambiance of the place. I had a very enjoyable stay and was sad to leave.

Review 103:Although not worth lowering our rating of this lovely Inn, the room was a bit hot.

Review 104:Great location. Very friendly staff. Although we did not eat there on this occasion the food has been first rate when we have dined at other times.

Review 105:Just a bit pricy but to be expected I guess.

Review 106:Lovely atmosphere, welcoming staff, great room and fabulous food. Our dog was also welcomed and she was allowed to accompany us to dinner if we ate in the bar rather than the restaurant. Overall we really enjoyed our stay.

Review 107:Bed was a bit hard and we did wake up with achy hips!! Didn't detract from the overall loveliness of the stay.

Review 108:Location, service, food, bedroom, bathroom, inn, bar, staff, everything was top!

Review 109:My single room was on the small side although admittedly quite comfortable. Parking space was limited so I had to leave my car key with staff as I was blocking in other guests. Not a Cheap place to stay although worth every penny in my opinion.

Review 110:The Wykeham has bags of character, in particular it has an amazing breakfast spread. Very friendly and helpful staff, combine with the Wykeham's ongoing usage as a working pub to create a lovely atmosphere. I had a very pleasant nights sleep in a beautifully quiet room. The Inn fits in well with it's enchanting central location resulting in a very old world feel. Clearly a lot of effort has expended in making the Wykeham an interesting and comfortable place to stay.

Review 111:Second stay & the coffee hasn't got better at breakfast...for the price is expect barista style!

Review 112:Lovely room, fantastic location, great meal in a really cosy pub, very friendly staff.

Review 113:Pesky bin men came early on Tuesday morning.

Review 114:Really lovely room, with lots of space, nice big bathroom, proper tea and coffee and a cafetière. They very kindly gave us a couple of free beers in the fridge.

Review 115:No shower cap provided, but there was a hairdryer to make up for it.

Review 116:the staff were very helpful and welcoming. The room was a bit small (it was a single room), but had everything necessary in it, was very clean and the bed was comfortable. There was free Wi-Fi, but I did not use it, so cannot comment on its reliability.

Review 117:Parking spaces are limited. If eating an evening meal foe more than one night of the stay then it would be nice to have more variety.

Review 118:Convenient location with luxurious facilities and friendly staff. The standard of food in the evening meal was extremely good.

Review 119:We were on the top floor of the building and the slanting ceiling in the bathroom made things very challenging since it is difficult even to stand in the bath. My husband is 6ft 4 ins. tall! Unfortunately the water also stopped on the first morning so showers were not possible. (Fixed very quickly)

Review 120:The Wykeham Arms is situated a few minutes walk from the major attractions of the town. So everything is easily accessible. The food is excellent and the staff most helpful. When we did not have water on the first day, the hotel took some money off our bill without our asking which was very generous. And fixed the problem very quickly and things were fine thereafter. We were particularly pleased of the old connections and enjoyed the fact that we were in the same Inn with an association with Nelson and Emma Hamilton. And the fact that it existed in the time when Jane Austen lived nearby.

Review 121:All good.

Review 122:Looked after us really well - it was a special occasion and they went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Fires in the grate in the pub at breakfast time, great breakfasts, help booking tables for other meals, and general friendliness, plus the high standard of the accommodation - all made for a great atmosphere and a fabulous weekend.

Review 123:Hotel is situated in a very nice part of a town. Staff made is very welcome. Also room was a very nice size, stuffed with loads of interesting things to look at.

Review 124:The room and hotel were great but the room needed a good clean. The freestanding bath needed cleaning beneath and behind it. The bedroom carpet was badly stained and the thick dust under the bed lets the place down, a great pity as I really liked the hotel and its staff. £120/night should ensure the rooms are cleaned regularly. The window latch was totally detached from the window.

Review 125:Friendly staff.

Review 126:the food was average, sometimes poor. Poached eggs on haddock for breakfast, eggs overcooked, fish undercooked. The full English breakfast was much better. The approach to our room was a bit scruffy and the front door banged every time it was used. The room needed a lick of paint.

Review 127:liked the pub and the room, the location was good

Review 128:Difficult to find by car. Tiny lane to get to car park. Lots of one way streets not marked on maps.

Review 129:The rooms are over the pub and restaurant. Very quiet. Pub décor truly British. Food comforting and service great. Very close to cathedral by foot.

Review 130:Thought it was over priced. We had a lovely old bedroom on top floor which was very difficult to get to for people of our age. Don't remember being advised of that beforehand. Our accommodation was advertised as with a Victorian bath - it certainly wasn't that. Food and drink was good but the overall cost of the one night stay was not value for money.

Review 131:Environment and ambience of the pub and its location in the historic, quiet heart of Winchester; everything of interest within easy walking distance. Parking available. Food good.

Review 132:If I had known the room was across the road in a separate building I would not have booked into this inn. Also as breakfast was not served until 8am I did not have time to have a full breakfast as I had to rehearse at the Cathedral at 8.30 .

Review 133:Staff very pleasant and helpful.Room warm and comfortable with yummy biscuits.

Review 134:The room we were given was not the room which appeared in the pictures of the booking, I found this quite disappointing. We got a fair discount at the end but the first reply from the member staff about our complain was a bit arrogant and annoyed

Review 135:The atmosphere of the pub and restaurant. Bed very comfortable

The Fine Print

Please note that some rooms are in the main building and others are in an annex across from the Wykeham Arms.
