Reviews for The Crab & Boar
Review 1:Well it was massively over priced for one night, we were sited right next to a busy road which we could here. There was no ironing board but an iron? There was no milk to have a hot drink, however they left but outside the room but didn't tell us! There was mould in the bathroom, and on the ceiling of the room. All in all, not outstanding which we were expecting from the price.
Review 2:Hot tub facility was good, although seemed like it hadn't been cleaned for a while, had an old smell coming from it.
Review 3:Particular Bar man being lazy and not very welcoming when we arrived. I had booked the room a month ago and tried to book a table online and by calling. The service is terrible. We had to eat later as the restaurant was busy desbite my voicemail and email asking to book. The barman would not make me a Cosmo when he said they were short staffed when actually it wasn't too busy! Also the back door would not lock and didn't feel very relaxed as it wouldn't lock and we didn't have what was promised in the room (coffee and buscuits) and the coffee maker/ filter was dirty. All we wanted to do was relax the only thing that did that was the hot tub and really we could have gone to a local spa for that! Service and attention to detail was poor. It was not worth what we paid.
Review 4:We liked the food, the bed, the nice bathroom and hot tub.
Review 5:Maybe because we caught these guys after a long Christmas/ New Year period working service was iffy. Whilst the staff were very pleasant, they boardered on unprofessional. They were slack. Clearly more excited about going out for the night than looking after the 3 couples that were paying in excess of £250 for the nights board. The room hadn't been cleaned properly; the bin was still full and the plug holes had hair in them. Also, whilst we are used to paying London prices and we like the finer things in life the uplift on the beers and ciders were ridiculous. A shame....
Review 6:Great location. Great ambiance. Good food and choice of booze. If more attention payed to detail this place could return to its glory days.
Review 7:Disappointed that our bed was broken and missing cross pieces. There was a very bright fire exit light inside the room. The cafetière was broken. The TV remote was broken. All small inconveniences that unfortunately add up. In addition, the main manager in his late 30's (40's ?) with the shaved head was aggressive, arrogant, fairly dismissive and swore at his staff and which didn't seem very professional. The room looked into a fairly busy road. We paid a discount rate for the room and were very happy during our stay. However, if we had paid the full price we would have been pretty aggrieved.
Review 8:Great location for food countryside walks, you can literally walk out of the pub to open countryside. Breakfast staff were really nice, super helpful and couldn't have been hospitable, at tentative and charming, in particular the young blond girl.
Review 9:The canvas cover for the terrace was missing and had been replaced with two quite unattractive umbrellas that flap around in the wind and weren't really fit for purpose.
Review 10:Rooms were nicely decorated and had all the facilities you would need
Review 11:The location is lovely and the stay should have been so much more enjoyable! We were visiting for the second time (since the change in ownership) and are sorry to say that the attention to detail was really lacking. The following is a list of issues encountered: *cobwebs in room and shower *room not dusted *bin in room not emptied *shampoo and soap etc in room already partially used *hot tub not hot and had to be re-set and/or sat in partially covered *grit in hot tub and lights not working *food in restaurant very hit and miss and the menu nowhere near as extensive as previously offered (very undercooked soufflé) *salt shaker on table empty - when we asked for a replacement we were given anothe empty shaker! *generally not very clean
Review 12:Lovely hotel, location and setting. Warm welcome also.
Review 13:The rooms lighting wasn't very bright for my fiancées make up but that is nothing
Review 14:The room and the food was lovely and staff were friendly. I proposed to my girlfriend that night and the staff were all celebratory and happy for us. It turns out we were the first people to get engaged in the hotel! Great room. Great hot tub. Cute hotel
Review 15:Overpriced for what it is - a pub with an OK restaurant and OK rooms, really nothing outstanding to warrant this price level.
Review 16:Clean and comfortable, food and accommodation was OK but not brilliant. Pretty friendly staff.
Review 17:Door to our room was broken and could be opened even when locked with a key. Our hot tub suite room had atleast 2 large areas of black spot mould on the walls and ceiling. The room was tired and required fresh paint, there was areas of paint missing off walls. Restaurant looks lovley and had a great menu. Both my husband and myself found hair in one of our starters and mains. Staff dealt with this well and replaced the dishes but it totally put us off our meals. Really not what you expect to see when you are paying £200+ for a room. Only one member of staff was working in the entire hotel on Sunday morning, she was run off her feet managing the breakfast service and guests wanting to checkout. I did email the hotel with a list of issues we encountered but dissapointingly no response has been received.
Review 18:Beautiful settings. Staff were very very good, extremely polite and well mannered. Breakfast was delicious.
Review 19:Wifi kept kicking us off & the front person seemed rude when checking out. Don't think I'd stay again.
Review 20:The room was very unique and comfy. However the hot tub could have done with more cover from rain.
Review 21:Staff were absolutely fantastic, food delicious. Room extremely clean and cosy, had the hot tub suite which was great! Had a slight problem with a door that was mended straight away and we were complimented- no faults whatsoever.
Review 22:Waitress service declined at the end, forgot coffee, then never saw her again. Had to ask another waiter for bill twice as he also forgot. We also had a jaquzzi room and umbrella supplied only just covered the corner of jaquzzi it would have been size to have a canopy umbrella so you can still enjoy in the rain. One of the walls in the bedroom also had peeling paint on the bottom of wall possibly due to damp. Toilet plumbing made strange noises. You could also hear the room upstairs quite bad especially when going up & down the metal stairs outside. No review or feedback forms in room. No fire exit notices in or outside room only one fire exit sign once heading into bar area. Our first visit was when it was previously just The Crab & we had such a lovely time we came back but now it is under different management it did not live up to our last visit.
Review 23:Bar staff were friendly, however bar not always manned, had to wait to check in & out as this was done from bar area. Food at dinner was lovely. Breakfast options were good. Fresh milk delivered to door although unless you look through the folder that contains all of the other hotels you would miss this. Bed was comfy. The outside & decor in the hotel has improved.
Review 24:Arrive late taken to room straight away no offer of drink. No help with directions for the morning no milk in room for tea
Review 25:Room comfortable and nicely decorated
Review 26:Drink and food good but expensive, seemed a little rushed when we ate in restuarant....monkfish was lovely although little undercooked and dessert was meant to be buttermilk flavour but tated like lemon..... think waitor (who was great) put me of a little at the start by saying he was going to rush us through as had private party coming..... I was the guest of hotel and I did feel rushed which in turn made me enjoy a little less.
Review 27:Loved location, room and hot tub, staff freindly and accomodating but new person there when we were leaving didnt even say goodbye (little thing but thats whats make the difference between good and excellent)
Review 28:The room had a water tank overhead, and there was an occasional water flow noise which lasted for half an hour at least each time. The shower was very small with only a trickle of water. The shower tray, did not drain properly, and filled with water quickly. If there is only a shower in the room, then it should be an good experience, this was not.
Review 29:Staff where excellent. Food was excellent. The Pub/Bar and Restaurant area was very cosy.
Review 30:Not a massive lager selection. Upstairs rooms could overlook the Hot Tub we had (Room Lilley), as canopy didn't cover like umbrella would. Cooked breakfast wasn't anything special, 1 sausage, 1 bacon, 2 egg (good), 1 mushroom. Requested baked beans (not on menu).
Review 31:Hot tub. Fish finger sandwich on bar menu. Décor beautiful in rooms and bar area
Review 32:The food was a big let down, we have stayed here before and the food was lovely. That is why we returned. On booking in we were informed of new management.
Review 33:The rooms were very nice
Review 34:- no milk, need to ask for it at the bar - hot tub is a bit overlooked - bathroom looks a bit tired - no one at reception
Review 35:- hot tub - breakfast - location
Review 36:Very walm welcome and amazing scenery. Facilities excellent and room was decorated to a good high quality finish. Outside space was clean and private and the hot tub was a great addition, good size and very clean.
Review 37:Came here with my girlfriend and stayed in one of the hot tub rooms the rooms was brilliant would definatly recommend this room to anyone the meal we had was faultless and the staff were so friendly and couodent help us enough overall I would really say you'd struggle to fine anywhere better for the price.
Review 38:Road noise very intrusive in our room if windows open
Review 39:Booked with a discount, otherwise price would have been high. Food good and service in restaurant was excellent.
Review 40:My room had a slanted ceiling in the bathroom so the shower was set too low.
Review 41:Location for business perfect. Beds and room very high standard. Food really good. Delivered fresh milk to door in the morning
Review 42:Room door leads direct to outside and rattled in wind. Loud noise of water in pipes - filling tank above room? No room phone connection to Reception staff. Chatter of people using three hot tubs just below room window.
Review 43:Good breakfast.
Review 44:After my initial view of the room you look closer... Very grubby.. The skirting boards hadn't hadn't been cleaned for a long time!! I pulled out a bedside cupboard to plug my charger in.. OMG ... Not good. Had no hairdryer or remote for the TV!! We couldn't work the bubbles in the hot tub and it could of been a lot warmer!! But a lovely setting in the countryside..
Review 45:I thought what a beautiful room and an added bonus of a hot tub.
Review 46:Would have been nice if we had been told from check in when breakfast was served from. Also at breakfast we wasn't told and not were others of the procedure of helping ourselves to breakfast. Felt rushed to order our cooked breakfast, perhaps on asking if we wanted tea or coffee the should of been told that we are welcome to help ourselves to juices cereal etc
Review 47:Fantastic weekend at the Crab and Boar. We stayed for two nights - the first on our own and the second we were joined by family to celebrate a special birthday party. We loved this recently decorated country pub - we had a gorgeous room looking over farmland. The food was delicious and a great 'restaurant with rooms' that's worth travelling to. The best part was the hospitality - everyone made us feel at home. Thanks to Kate and Matt and their fantastic team. It's a romantic place to enjoy as a couple, but also a fun location for a larger group. We had the private dining room for our party - and the Crab and Boar made it a night to remember!
Review 48:How the staff spoke about us to other customers , very rude , no heating in our room only one light worked and we paid a lot of money for just one night to be treated awful
Review 49:Liked the location and the views
Review 50:Awful creaky bed in Penclose room. This and the dismembered remains of the four poster it sits in should be scrapped as a priority. Room could have better soundproofing as it is right on a busy road. Skylights need some sort of curtains as too much light early in the morning.
Review 51:The food and the staff were both excellent, as was the overall ambience of the hotel.
Review 52:We did get forgotten at breakfast we waited half an hour and when someone else was served before us we knew we had been forgotten. Staff were very sorry and food was nice when it arrived
Review 53:The place is beautiful, in a lovely spot and everyone is very nice.
Review 54:The food could have been on a higher standard..... great ideas for the menu, great presentation but the quality was average! ( being over cooked or dry )
Review 55:Device, the warm welcome & hot tub facilities!
Review 56:Only flaws were, in room phone didn't work, no bin in the room, cafetière wasn't very clean, hair dryer broke.
Review 57:Very homely, extremely friendly staff, great hot tub, lovely food, cosy bed, great shower.
Review 58:The option to order Room service would have made this stay 10/10.
Review 59:Fantastic mini break, Chapel Wood room with the private hot tub is highly recommended.
Review 60:The only thing I could fault was that the canopy outside only covered half the hot tub, so when it was raining it wasn't completely covered. However - it only rained for an hour so we were fine!
Review 61:Love this place! Hot tubs are awesome and it's really good value considering the private hot tubs! The food is absolutely gorgeous and I was pleased to see the addition of more meat based meals as I am fussy with seafood. The bedrooms have been renovated to a really high standard and it's a really cost and romantic place to stay. The staff are very welcoming and friendly which makes a huge difference. We will be back for our next wedding anniversary!
Review 62:Birthday trip that ended up a nightmare! We were given the Scotch room and after our meal we got into bed to find the room above us had leaked and the bedding was wet, the staff changed the bedding, and we climbed back in hoping for a good nights sleep! We hadn't clicked on seeing the ear plugs in the bathroom a good nights sleep wasn't going to happen!!! The room is located right next to a road, the cars drove past frequently throughout the night and morning, the window only had a light curtain, so each car that drove past lit the bedroom up like a disco, actually sounded like they were in the room too! The room did get hot throughout the night, as the noise was bad enough with the windows shut, we couldn't open the windows for any air. The mattress was a lot bigger than the bed base. So during the night my husband actually slipped off the bed, coupled with the floorboards squeaking all night we did not get any sleep, it actually made me quite ill. We had a breakfast before leaving and on hearing the ping of a microwave was served congealed bake beans which I didn't attempt to eat On top of this off we were charged £175.00 for the pleasure! To have no sleep, feel ill and wait for it.... The Landlords response... He is sorry about the leak from the room above, and they are looking into the mattress proble and they hope to see us again in the future!! A shame as a beautiful location, but a place I will tell people to avoid
Review 63:Jacuzzi could of been more private and slightly covered better, this would make you able to enjoy it all year round, could of been a bit hotter. (if it rained you would have to get out)
Review 64:Bed extremely comfortable, area was so quiet had an excellent nights sleep! Food excellent so were the staff.

Review 66:The evening meal was nice, had to cancel the coffee due to the wait!
Review 67:The pillows were awful! Customer service was poor Cedar wood room is right on the road- cars driving past loudly all night Hot tub didn't work on arrive No bin in the room No room service
Review 68:The hot tub when it worked was the nicest part
Review 69:Maybe a bit too smart, clean and comfortable -and I am being picky. Perhaps needs a few more of those quirky oddities that make a place really interesting and characterful
Review 70:Very welcoming to me and my dogs, very smart, clean and comfortable.
Review 71:Although the bed was comfortable, it was very creaky at the slightest movement . Also the very noisy road outside of the window - too close to the road. Taking a shower was OK, but felt there should have been a slip mat as the bath was very slippery.
Review 72:Ground floor room was close to road, a lot of road noise but love the fact they placed earplugs in the room.
Review 73:Absolutely brilliant atmosphere and scenery. Room was comfortable, clean, relaxing and had everything you need. Staff was over accommodating and breakfast was wonderful. Would definitely stay again!
Review 74:Nothing.
Review 75:The food was wonderful, the staff lovely and overall had an Excellent stay at the Crab and Boar. - Hot Tub was a definite do if you are staying here :-)
Review 76:The Hot Tub hadn't been cleaned properly or rinsed out as I could feel silt on the sides and bottom
Review 77:The refurbishment makes the place feel more homely and Warner.
Review 78:Room was beside the road so early morning traffic was an issue. Uncomfortable creaky bed. Breakfast young waitress was disinterested. Staff generally more concerned with themselves.
Review 79:Quiet countryside location. On site parking, bar and restaurant.
Review 80:We came here for my boyfriends birthday present. The most beautifully laid out pub we have ever been too hidden in the beautiful countryside. Our room was stunning and had everything we needed. The hot tub was amazing and we were very lucky to have a clear night so we could see the stars. The bar staff and waitress Naomi were all very friendly and attentive. The food was absolutely beautiful and they had a lovely wine list. The breakfast was delicious and check out time is spot on.We honestly can not fault this pub with anything, the owners are lovely and have great taste. The decor was quirky and fun and we will definitely be coming back again for another special occasion, worth every single penny :) thank you for making my boyfriends birthday a wonderful evening Kellie xxx
Review 81:Nothing simple on Dinner menu . Dishes all very fancy shame there wasn't one sime meal.
Review 82:Reception very welcoming. Rooms lovely /comfortable & clean. Lovely bathroom.
Review 83:The only issue was the creaking/noisy bed which made a loud noise every time you moved.
Review 84:Excellent hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Great location and close to Portsmouth to catch the ferry. Excellent food.
Review 85:the room was a little cold
Review 86:The hot tub was amazing, the staff very pleasant and the food was out of this world.the bed was very comfy and lovely views across the fields when having breakfast
Review 87:We loved the crab at chievely, fantastic choice and service impeccable. Now as the Crab and Boar the menu limited, not a huge choice of seafood and service average.
Review 88:Rooms comfortable, restaurant and bar area good.
Review 89:There's nothing not too like:)
Review 90:Fantastic place very clean and very friendly staff. Menu very good and the food was excellent:) hot tub rooms are a must loved every minute being there:)
Review 91:Overall the room, service and food was of a good standard. Only issue was the water flow from the shower which was very slow. Otherwise significant improvements based on our visits to the 'old' Crab.
Review 92:This was our second visit to this little gem...we love it and will be visiting again....pay the little bit extra for a room with private hot tub...it was amazing
Review 93:Very cozy hotel with beautifully decorated rooms. The breakfast was delicious and the pub area was very nice. The staff was friendly and helpful in every way. We would definitely recommend this hotel, everything was perfect.
Review 94:Bed was smaller than advertised and room was very noisy from passing traffic. Food in restaurant was OK but not much variety. Drinks were expensive - £8.00 for a glass of wine (more than you would pay in London).
Review 95:Large shower in room and good service in the restaurant in the evening.
Review 96:Staff wonderful. Food excellent. The room had a broken light and terrible shower (but the bath was fine) but had a lovely four poster bed. A great anniversary choice.
Review 97:The shower was ridiculous, neither my husband or I could stand in it due to the pitched roof. The full English breakfast was a bit wet and could be improved.
Review 98:The dinner was great. Bed was comfortable.
Review 99:Nothing!
Review 100:We arrived late due to traffic but received a very warm welcome. Our restaurant booking was held for an hour despite being fully booked allowing us to freshen up. Great staff and excellent food.
Review 101:The room was a bit close to the road but earplugs were supplied The roof lights didn't have blinds on them so woke with sunrise. Cannot give any thing more negative than that
Review 102:The Customer serves was excellent, the staff were very friendly and amenable. Great Value. The restaurant was well above average with a very nice wine list
Review 103:nothing
Review 104:I loved everything about the Crab and Boar. My fiancee is normally very picky but she approved of every single thing about the place. From the food,to the bed,to the Jacuzzi and the staff. Before going i had read a few bad reviews, but the good reviews outweighed the bad ones and i was eager to see for myself. Then i realized there will always be haters and the hard ones to please. To my(our) amazement,it was wonderful. When we arrived at the reception we met Letrelle(excuse me for the wrong spelling) who was so polite and helpful. We had luch which was excellent and the waitress(Naomi) very helpful and from then on our impression of the place was exactly what we had envisaged. The hot tub was fantastic, the meals the breakfast.Nothing to fault the place.Overall we would go back over and over again.Totally loved it
Review 105:We had a large room at the front of pub on the road so you do hear the noise from the road but does get less overnight but starts at 6am again but tolerable and a few issues in bathroom but I am sure they will get fixed
Review 106:Staff very friendly room was clean ed properly the dinner was excellent and plenty of room and we had nice walks to take our two dogs on directly from the pub so it was a shame we could only stay one night.
Review 107:Having your own car would be helpful here, the pub is tucked away a little.
Review 108:Recently refurbished and absolutely lovely. Fantastic value for money, friendly staff, and attentive service.
Review 109:Was not happy with the hot tub its self it was dirty disgusting where someone else had been in it with fake tan it was disgusting so disappointed and for the price that we paid was not happy and we could also fill the dirt as we got into the hot tub the grit around the sides and on the sets !!!
Review 110:The only thing me and my partner light was the food
Review 111:This place offered exactly what I was looking for; simply excellent skilled service without the need for pretension. Comfortable rooms with a wonderful mix of quirky antique furniture and modern twists, Food to die for on a stripped back menu which offers a great range of fish and seafood but also meat and vegetarian options. Delicious. Throughout service and preparation of the food it tells you the chef loves his work and is on top of his/her game.
Review 112:Very bad service by untrained young staff. Food was well belowaverage for restaurant standard. Terrible breakfast. Bedroomadjoining public road, constant noise of passing cars. Noisy bed thatcreaked at every turn
Review 113:Not one item in this establishment did we like. Standards have collapsedsince new owners have taken over.
Review 114:Breakfast was slightly over cooked but that was down to my own preference - other than that no negatives!
Review 115:The hot tub was amazing... Dinner was brilliant and good value for money. Staff were very welcoming and friendly.
Review 116:We really enjoyed the hotel.. had a lovely dinner and really really really enjoyed the hot tub. Customer service was AMAZING and we will be booking again very soon
Review 117:The main things that we did not like was the meal was expensive and not great food. The other problem was we were on the first floor and on the floor below us were spa baths with the rooms. They have put a type of mesh roof over the private for those guests to have privacy but unfortunately it does not cover it when looking down to the left or right. We went to look at the view from the window and was faced with an older couple naked in the spa bath doing things that I did not want to see. Very unpleasant.
Review 118:The style of our room was lovely and the décor was amazing. It was very quiet and so was the restaurant.
Review 119:The only down side was that my room was directly above the road, so when the windows were opened it was awfully noisy. I can imagine that in the summer this would be annoying. Perhaps worth considering either providing a fan or AC unit to allow the windows and double glazing to remain closed.
Review 120:I had a meeting in Newbury so decided to travel down the night before. Rather than stay in the boring Hilton I decided to go for something a bit more homely. What a pleasant experience. Lovely food, lovely location and a great room.
Review 121:Menu too small and needs more fish, such as mackerel or plaice.
Review 122:The decor is so much better and the food was excellent. I also loved the rooms being more simple. The layout in the restaurant gave a better flow.
Review 123:Meal portions a tad small, so would recommend getting a starter too, but this isn't a complaint as the food is good.
Review 124:Excellent stay. Fantastic food and lovely room
Review 125:There was nothing bad.
Review 126:The rooms were very clean and well presented. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hot tub was amazing well worth paying the extra for a hot tub room. The restaurant was amazing dinner and breakfast both cooked to perfection. I liked the extra little touches like the fresh bottles of milk for tea and coffee rather than uht milk. We had a great stay and will definitely be going back.
Review 127:1st room had a squeaky bed and no hot water in the bathroom Slow service in the restaurant Very noisy traffic on road outside - double glazing required NO hot water again the following morning Only got a "sorry" from the staff Will not stay here again
Review 128:Bar staff were friendly
Review 129:Could do with lighting around bathroom mirror (in Langley)
Review 130:Warm welcome, comfortable room with glorious walk-in shower. Excellent restaurant and superb chef. Friendly and attentive service.
Review 131:Bathroom not clean, shower was a dribble of water, bar was very expensive (London prices 50 miles from London).
Review 132:Location, beer garden, bedrooms, staff, specification of bar/restaurant area
Review 133:Even the food was different the rooms were very plain and bland the only bonus being the hot tub even then no facilities to sit outside. The restaurant food was not as good neither was the option available for any kind if room service
Review 134:The hot tub
Review 135:A little out of the way for business. Although the room was very pretty and aesthetically lovely, it's ameneties were quite poor.
Review 136:Lovely room. Very pretty rural location. Great food and fair bar.
