Reviews for The King Alfred Pub
Review 1:Very quaint pub. Loved the design, style and feel of it. Christmas decorations were amazing! We loved our room, lots of space and the en-suite was stunning. The staff and the locals were all very friendly. Only a 5 min walk in to Winchester town. We visited for the Christmas Markets and were not disappointed.
Review 2:I paid 150 GBP for two nights without breakfast. For this money I do expect that the room is made when I come back for the second night. However, this was not the case, though I was away from 9am to 6pm. Mattress was worn out. When I entered the room, it was very, very cold. I first had to switch on the heating and wait for it to get better.
Review 3:The room had a nice comfortable size. Food was pretty good.
Review 4:Nothing!!
Review 5:Great location for city centre, clean & tidy room With hot shower. Nice full English breakfast. Lovely pub inside with an exellent bar menu ( very popular) would stay there again!!
Review 6:We had a lovely room which was described as a small double, but there was plenty of room for us. The breakfast was plenty and delicious. All the staff were very friendly and we would definitely stay here again.
Review 7:I was woken up by some noisy guests on my last night - perhaps they didn't realise there were others staying there.
Review 8:The King Alfred is in a quiet location. The room was spacious and well furnished. Delicious cooked breakfast served by very friendly staff.
Review 9:No complaints considering the cost of staying there, great value for money
Review 10:Location,short walk into town centre , very good value , parking made easy because your given a permit to park in restricted parking street . Nice and polite staff
Review 11:Some noise could be heard from the pub. Not really a problem though.
Review 12:Comfortable room. Well cooked breakfast. Nice bar area and separate dinning area serving good food.
Review 13:Great location, less than 10 minutes into Winchester city centre. Friendly staff, especially the lady who served breakfast. The room was comfortable with individual radiators to adjust heating. Will definitely go back when next in the area.
Review 14:WiFi had really poor signal. Staff were a bit disorganised and unsure how to check me in on arrival, but were friendly and sorted everything out eventually.
Review 15:Location is great: walking distance to city centre. Lovely clean room with lots of heat and towels and nice layout. Easy access to food in bar. Friendly staff.
Review 16:The breakfasts were of a sub standard. I paid for 2 standard breakfasts and each were individually different. With items missing and when requesting either tea or coffee one day I would have no cup and saucer or forgotten to be given any milk or sugar.
Review 17:The bedroom accommodation was calm, soothing and of a really good standard. The bed was really comfortable and bed linen was cleaning.
Review 18:The Alfred Pub is like a home away from home. The rooms are light, clean and comfortable. Breakfast and dinner was Very Good . Ben and his staff were fantastic. I always prefer to stay at the Alfred when I visit Winchester.
Review 19:Mattress was too soft.
Review 20:Friendly barman who showed us to our room, room was spotless, stylish and a large size. The pub was a short walk from the City Centre. Parking permit for free parking in vicinity. Calm and quiet. A relaxing stay.
Review 21:location is close enough to town center but in a neighborhood. staff and owner are wonderful. room is clean and quiet, always a concern when you stay over a pub.
Review 22:Staff were really friendly, could park outside the pub and then 5-10 min walk to the High Street. The food was lovely and room was good size, even though described as a small double. Would stay here again.
Review 23:I loved it! Could have stayed for much longer. The place is located in a quiet and beautiful neighbourhood, a 15 min walk (through lovely streets and passageways) from High Street. The staff couldn't be any nicer. Rooms are conveniently sized and have everything you need. And it was also very convenient to have a pub downstairs, where you can find good food, good drinks and often a match to watch.
Review 24:Met our needs completely.
Review 25:Near enough for a walk to the city centre ; great eats and good selection of beers and spirits. We'll located for one to feel the nature of this residential liveable shire.
Review 26:The mattress on the bed in room 4 has seen better days. Too soft and lumpy for us!
Review 27:The room was clean, modern and spacious. Staff were friendly and helpful. The food in the pub was good value and there was a reasonable choice.Free parking was a bonus.
Review 28:All the facilities of a much larger hotel combined with the friendliness and charm of a good local pub. Excellent breakfast included in our room rate, and the one meal we ate in the restaurant was also good and great value.
Review 29:If I had to be picky, the water pressure in the shower was not very good, but maybe I was just unlucky that morning.
Review 30:Great location. Very friendly staff. Great breakfast. Good value for money in Winchester.
Review 31:My only gripe is with booking.com. The quoted rate was for a single person in a double room. We had to add an additional £25 for the extra person. Making the stay outside of our budget. We would have looked elsewhere.
Review 32:Great breakfast. Comfortable rooms
Review 33:The staff were so lovely and friendly and the location was great! Able to park and able to walk into city in 10 mins. Overall a brilliant historic pub and delicious food too! Will come again! :)
Review 34:My wife and I both had fish, mine was cooked throughout, hers was not. Apologies and no charge for hers. The bed was too firm/hard for my liking. It is a lively pub do not expect quiet until after 11.30 pm.
Review 35:A lively English Pub . Parking was just outside. An easy walk into the centre of Winchester.
Review 36:I would not recommend eating here in the evening - the food was quite expensive and poorly prepared - overcooked fish, overblown pub grub at restaurant prices. There are much nicer establishments nearby. The place felt rather cool and there was a noisy generator next to my room.
Review 37:Pleasant staff, excellent breakfast
Review 38:Only 2 minor details - food was quite expensive. The toilet Flush was poor.
Review 39:Very friendly and efficient Staff. Clean and tidy. For us it was an excellent location as our "do" was at Wichester Rugby club.
Review 40:Staff left window open with light on so lots of bugs got into the room - easy mistake but not ideal to deal with before bed!
Review 41:Good breakfast and location
Review 42:Nothing at all
Review 43:Wonderful welcome, everything explained carefully on a very busy Sunday lunch followed by great food, everything fantastic, definite return
Review 44:The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. The faciliies were clean and comfortable. The food, evening meal and breakfast, was very good value for money. The location was quiet, yet not far from the City attractions
Review 45:When we arrived having cycled 70 miles there was no water in our room. We reported this to bar staff (very helpful and friendly) and then went out for something to eat. When we returned a very rude man behind the bar refused to make eye contact until another customer prodded him into it. He told us the owner had come and water was now available suggesting that we were unreasonable to want this. The water was still intermittent but did work. The final customers didn't leave the bar until 2:30 am which made it pretty noisy but maybe you should expect this in a pub. We won't be staying here again.
Review 46:Lovely room, comfy bed, nice people. Love Winchester, came for Hat Fair. Tucked away out of the hurly burly but only a short, pleasant stroll into town.
Review 47:I liked everything - I hadn't realised there was free wifi (my lack of observation, not their fault) or I'd have liked that too!
Review 48:Everything - it was gorgeous.
Review 49:Extremely good breakfast, friendly and helpful staff, enjoyed the atmosphere that comes from being above the pub. No problems with noise despite its being a Saturday night.
Review 50:Quite no noise from planes or traffic.Good location easy walk to town. Staff very friendly, spent a pleasant morning chatting over a great English breakfast.
Review 51:Nothing to dislike
Review 52:onr of the nicest cleanest traditional pubs I have set foot in. Great food great service and comfortable clean room. Situated in a nice quiet road could have stayed longer.
Review 53:Very friendly, beautiful clean room, excellent value/quality breakfast. Excellent location, 5 minutes walk from town centre but off main road so quiet
Review 54:When booking I requested soya milk and gluten free bread - neither were available when I arrived. Not sure who is at fault here, the pub or booking.com The least they could have done is inform me so I could take my own. Hash browns mushy and undercooked.
Review 55:Large room, large bed (all furniture heavy and old fashioned but clean.) No air con but fan provided.
Review 56:On my return I had a room overlooking the garden, which was a little noisy at night. No problem - I asked the party to please be quiet and they immediately and graciously complied. :)
Review 57:My friend and I stayed here on our way to the Isle of Wight, and I returned solo the next week. The twin room was perfect: clean, well-appointed and quiet. We enjoyed having an ale downstairs, as well as breakfast and lunch the next day. A 10 minute walk to the downtown and 10 to the train station. All of the staff were very pleasant.
Review 58:Friendly and helpful staff Lovely room and bathroom - quiet Good food at a good price in the pub / garden Easy walk to town and to train station
Review 59:The wi-fi only worked in the bathroom on my phone and the room was cleaned only on demand.
Review 60:The staff were friendly, the breakfast/ dining area was very cosy, good food & wine and great relaxing atmosphere in the pub :)
Review 61:The loo didn't flush properly.
Review 62:Nice big, well equipped rooms. The main worry was about being disturbed by the pub downstairs on a Friday night, but this wasn't a problem. All very quiet,
Review 63:unfortunately the night we was there it was very noisy with loud talking and banging doors from other residents until after 3 in the morning, not from the pub, very little sleep
Review 64:decent location
Review 65:The kitchen closed just as I arrived and the duty staff would not take my order. Nonetheless, plenty of options were available nearby.
Review 66:The landlady was fantastic. Super helpful and very friendly. The bed was as comfortable as sleeping in my own. The cooked breakfast was excellent.
Review 67:Little outside town centre for our trip, but this is reflected in the price
Review 68:Accommodation was clean and a good breakfast Fine for our stay Good range of beer in the bar!
Review 69:Some people may not like busy atmosphere in the early evenings during the week in the pub. But you cant hear this upstairs, so it didn't affect us.
Review 70:The room was very clean, furniture modern, very comfortable bed and lovely shower room.Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast plentiful and nicely cooked. We had an evening meal in the pub, good variety on menu and good food.
Review 71:Couldn't open the windows, think they had been painted shut, so the nights were so hot, making sleeping uncomfortable.
Review 72:Excellent location, short walk to the city centre and tourist sites. Very helpful, obliging staff.
Review 73:Parking is not easy although we were lucky and managed to stop right outside. We were very happy when the staff gave us a residents parking permit after we had booked in.
Review 74:Liked the food and the beer! Very friendly staff. Room was clean and looked as if it had recently been decorated
Review 75:The bed was really comfy, the staff were friendly, we parked just outside, the room was warm and we came back late with no problem. Breakfast was great too.
Review 76:Heating is okay, but can be improved.
Review 77:Comfortable room, small double room is NOT too small. Wifi the best I ever had at a hotel. Had full english breakfast, excellent. Location next to historic sites, beautiful. 15 min walk to the city centre though. Staff very nice, thank you guys for a pleasent stay.
Review 78:The really friendly staff made me very welcome. The room was well thought out with excellent ensuite facilities. A superb cooked breakfast was the icing on the cake!
Review 79:The King Alfred was a long and hilly walk with luggage from the University of Winchester where my son was studying. It was, however, closer to the historic downtown than I at first thought.
Review 80:I was expecting a simple single room with a cramped bathroom. Instead, I was given a queen bed with a remodeled and spacious bathroom. The duvet was fluffy, and the bed was really comfy!
Review 81:Soft mattress and intermittent wifi
Review 82:Lovely big room, full of traditional features, immaculately clean, staff very friendly and welcoming, nice evening meal and lovely breakfast
Review 83:The room next to us was being painted and people were talking loudly at 7:30am as well as scraping walls. The night before pub noise below our room was disturbing. And when we asked for a later check out of 15 minutes we were refused. The painting crew had the hallway cluttered as we wove our way around ladders, etc. Felt like we were in the way!
Review 84:A very attractive pub/inn with good food and a well appointed room.
Review 85:We found nothing to dislike.
Review 86:Food, ambience, friendly staff and excellent service. Will definitely stay there again when next we are in the UK and especially Winchester.
Review 87:Absolutely nothing to fault whatsoever. Bar staff/welcoming excellent. Made me feel at home
Review 88:Able to get fresh air in bedroom. Bed good. Breakfast fantastic
Review 89:No dislikes, its my first choice.
Review 90:Quiet, 5 mins to town centre, small local pub with 4 large bedrooms, very clean, posh bathroom, good pub grub, good beer, friendly, wifi, sky sports in bar, good parking. Ideal for solo business traveler staying odd night midweek. Better quality and standard than £200 night hotels in Winchester.
Review 91:Brilliant new bathroom facilities. The pub was extremely popular on the Sat night I stayed but surprisingly the noise did not travel upstairs at all and I had a great night. Superb position and such good value for money. Highly recommended
Review 92:the pub is tucked away so if you want a quite stay in Winchester still will work., the room is comfy, but this is not a boutique hotel. the bathroom looked new. the staff are helpful and friendly. I had the full English breakfast everyday, loved it. the Sunday roast dinner,(brought back good memories, I used to live in Winchester) don't know where they get their fish from, but, the fish and chips is amazing.
Review 93:Not Having a breakfast in the morning a excuse of Christmas party meals so they where not doing them
Review 94:The Room was comfortable and well laid out and modern
Review 95:Bathroom cabinet well worn. En-suite would have looked so much better without it.
Review 96:Great breakfast. Good sized room with effective heating and facilities, including shower, tea/coffee and wi-fi. Staff welcoming and helpful. City centre only a 15 min walk away.
Review 97:Although the breakfast was good, dinner was mediocre
Review 98:Large, warm and comfortable room, great shower, cosy pub atmosphere and friendly service. Well located for train travel, and an easy walk to town centre.
Review 99:a cosy friendly pub with accommodation and the best food. Menu is not too big and the quality of the food is simply fantastic, room was spacious, comfortable, great bathroom and the mangers and staff were very friendly and welcoming. Great location for walking to the centre.
Review 100:just one bedside light. Cracks in plaster and chips in woodwork. Areas of black mould in grouting in the bathroom. No information given about heating the room and the heated towel rail which was cold on on our arrival. We had to work it out for ourselves.
Review 101:location and silence. Staff polite and courteous. Access at late hour. Comfortable bed and bedding.
Review 102:Shower had a lot of black in the corners and on the grouting, as did the bathroom window ledge. Found a couple of hairs behind the bathroom door.
Review 103:Nice welcome when we arrived and gave us a parking permit to park on the road outside, which was a real bonus. Within walking distance of the city, with plenty of pubs and restaurants enroute. Room was comfortable and breakfast good for an extra £5.
Review 104:all good
Review 105:staff very helpful, friendly and polite, beer and food very good and well priced, room and bed very comfortable, locals very friendly, only 5 minute walk to town, definitely visit again.
Review 106:Nothing i couldnt say i disliked.
Review 107:It was a great stay and excellent value for money. I love a hot power shower in the. Morning and that was what i got. my single room cost £50. Was easily as good as premier inn which these days are hard to find beneath £75. Would stay there again staff very helpful too.
Review 108:Would have liked access to a radio as not keen on breakfast tv.
Review 109:Location was an easy walk along the river into the city. Parking is on street but easy with the permit provided. Quality of breakfast and service was good. Bedroom was spacious with two easy chairs and good tv. Not disturbed by downstairs pub noise.

Review 113:Rooms simple and not that large but clean
Review 114:location is just a ten min walk from railway station and 15 mins from town centre.Although a busy pub not noisy, and apart from hearing folk leave about 11pm no noise. parking permits issued for on street parking
Review 115:Food was average for price, parking can be an issue as it is on street (that said the Pub staff provided me with a free permit).
Review 116:Very good location if you are attending a passing out parade at the Sir John Moore Army Barracks. The staff were friendly and helpful. Stayed 1 night so not sure about location with respect to Winchester.
Review 117:Hotel price for a B&B
Review 118:Good location with a 10 minute walk into the centre of town. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent and staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 119:A bit blokey in the evening ,darts etc but a good local pub
Review 120:Easy walk into town, convenient permit parking outside pub.Just pop in & ask for a permit when you arrive. Friendly & helpful staff. Biggest bauble decorations I have ever seen! Full english breakfast ,good value for location . Didn't eat there in the evening or see the menu but looked busy.
Review 121:Nothing.
Review 122:Clean,friendly staff a ten minute walk from centre.Easy to park with permit from landlord.Comfortable room with a good breakfast.Popular with the locals but not noisy.
Review 123:There wasn't anything I didn't like.
Review 124:I had a single room and was really happy with how spacious it was. It was well equipped and the bed was extremely comfortable. The rates are really reasonable and I felt I wouldn't have had better even from some of the more expensive hotels in the area. The staff were lovely and friendly and there was a nice, relaxed atmosphere. I would definitely recommend staying here and would stay again if I'm ever back in Winchester.
Review 125:This is not the first time I have stayed and I'm sure this won't be the last. A very pleasurable comfy stay with friendly staff and a lovely breakfast each morning. Thanks a lot.
Review 126:The only thing that slightly tainted stay was a line of wet on wall of the outside wall which made the room smell slightly damp. if this was fixed it would be a perfect stay...
Review 127:Really enjoyed my stay, really friendly and helpful staff. great breakfast!!
