Reviews for Cromwell Lodge Hotel
Review 1:I stayed in Banbury overnight for a works outing. I wanted a town centre hotel and chose the Cromwell Lodge on the basis of previous reviews, price and inclusive breakfast and I was not at all disappointed. Friendly and efficient staff, comfortable room, all good. I would definitely stay there again.
Review 2:The lack of shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom was a bit disappointing. The shower screen was not very effective which resulted in water pooling on the bathroom floor. The room was pretty dingy. The TV in one of the rooms didn't work. The shower water kept switching between scalding hot and freezing cold. The cooked breakfast was very poor.
Review 3:The staff were very friendly and helpful. I liked the pub downstairs, looked very elegant from the outside. The room was warm.
Review 4:The location is excellent 5-8 minutes walk from station. 1-2 minute walk to shops, market and restaurants. The food at the Cromwell is good pub grub which is well cooked, presented and very fairly priced .
Review 5:Noise - thin walls ,could hear TV next door. Also noise from pub next door - better window insulation required
Review 6:Quick check in , friendly efficient staff , good breakfast
Review 7:bathroom not perfectly clean - look at dust on back of door. Floor so creaky you woke each other up going to toilet..
Review 8:friendly staff good location in lovely old property,,convenient fro decent over night stay .. eating places around and in house and shops and conveniences and parking near by
Review 9:the décor was slightly tired, however it was clean which is more important.
Review 10:The bedroom was huge for the price and felt very welcoming. Breakfast quality was very good
Review 11:I could hear people in other rooms - very personal things that I didn't want to hear. I was aware of the location and I knew it was Christmas so I didn't expect it to be quiet but the soundproofing in the rooms is totally inadequate. I didn't have breakfast because it was very busy and I was on my own and a bit embarrassed to go down to breakfast - the option of a continental breakfast would have been good and I would have paid extra for that benefit.
Review 12:The hotel staff were very friendly but professional and very helpful. The room was small but I got what I paid for. Everything was fine.
Review 13:Been many times in the past 2 years and I have never had a bad experience
Review 14:Friendly staff, comfortable rooms. The Cromwell is full of character dark wood, some would say old decor but it's an old Inn traditional, clean and friendly. Tea coffee hot chocolate and biscuits are left in each room. Flat screen TV, En suite bathroom.
Review 15:Room 1 has very noisy floorboards, lots of water stains on the ceilings, and the smallest shower in any hotel I have visited. It is also too hot in the hotel
Review 16:Excellent location and staff
Review 17:Dinner was good value for money. The food was very acceptable but the service was was poor. We were left staring at our finished dinner plates for a good fifteen minutes before someone came to clear them. It wasn't very busy and it felt like they had forgotten about us.
Review 18:The hotel was located in the town centre and easy to find. We received a very warm welcome from staff who were all friendly and polite. The room was comfortable, clean and our superior double was a decent size. Good value dinner menu and choice of food.
Review 19:We really liked everything: room, breakfast, staffs, bar. Atmosphere was very nice and we felt very cosy. People around very helpful. I enjoyed the glass of wine in the bar with the fireplace. We had such a good time on our holiday.
Review 20:there are no executive rooms - only doubles - regardless of what website says the windows are single glazed and are winning the war against an ancient and very loud plumbing system once checked in - reception is vacated
Review 21:nice bed
Review 22:New mattress but very, very, hard. Room a little tired and tv was broken. Could not go through to bar due to private function.
Review 23:Friendly staff, great location, clean and a cosy fire.
Review 24:Charming inexpensive hotel with a delicious breakfast all inclusive. Our room had a beautiful view of lovely Banbury. Guinness on tap downstairs and a warming cozy fireplace.
Review 25:Shower would not drain, needed turning off so it would not overflow. Shower temperature would not adjust. Room small. Although generall staff were OK, when we went to check out nobody bothered with us just walking past so we just put the key down and left.
Review 26:Breakfast was good. Room clean.
Review 27:TV and wifi didn't work.. Bed was nice bad but room so small I accidently opened the curtains every time I crossed the room. Shower and sink drained very slowly
Review 28:Friendly staff
Review 29:It's a little tired, bathroom needs upgrading and a little bit of tlc required.
Review 30:Staff were excellent, breakfast good and bar comfortable. Excellent placed for Banbury town and restaurants.
Review 31:No lift, my wife had bad knee's and found it hard to go upstairs
Review 32:The Hotel was in a very good area for traveling , the rooms were large and comfortable bed
Review 33:Our room floorboards very creaky Room 3 no heater in bathroom the day after we booked room was reduced by £20.00 which was very annoying and I feel it would have been a fairer price for the standard of the hotel as it in definite need of a refurbishment Was also very hot downstairs almost to the point of discomfort
Review 34:The hotel was very central staff were very pleasant.
Review 35:The wifi didn't work, the bath took over 15mins to run as the cold water was very slow. Was on the their floor in the oldest room and it was very cold at night
Review 36:The bedroom was a very good size and the claw bath in the bathroom was a lovely touch.
Review 37:This hotel needs completely redecorating like a lot of hotels they have let it run down and it now looks scruffy the staff do a marvellous job keeping it clean but nothing can hide worn and scruffy paint, The lay out of the hotel means they have no trouble closing parts down during the quiet periods and repainting it is false economy to let the whole place get run down.
Review 38:Staff very friendly and helpful
Review 39:My single room overlooked two brick walls so the interior was a bit dark. Could have done with a fresh lick of paint to brighten it up - plus the lighting could have been improved given there was no view.
Review 40:Great food and drink. Friendly service. Superb meal/snack deals. Comfort. Central location. Can't really fault anything and would most certainly recommend.
Review 41:Car park was small and cramped
Review 42:Very close to town centre, easily reached from motorway , nice breakfast choice, nice soft high beds, friendly staff willing to help you.
Review 43:Coffee bags instead of coffee sachets in bedroom.
Review 44:Staff were friendly and helpful. Exellent location for visiting the shops in Banbury. Comfortable bed, large bath.
Review 45:A little road noise as room at the front but not disturbed too much. Hotel in general could do with a bit of a facelift as decoration poor in places
Review 46:Excellent location and good value for money Breakfast excellent and beds comfortable Room and bathroom clean though in need of some TLC Can't complain at this price it was fine (£45 B&B)
Review 47:The noise levels from the road and the general noise of people moving about were quite high. The breakfast was quite hard work, I was asked if I wanted toast I said yes, but then had to chase it. The cooked breakfast was served cold which was a shame as it could have been quite nice and the table needed wiping down.
Review 48:The location and the discounted price were good. I would have been much more judgemental had I paid the full amount.
Review 49:disappointed with room as I thought it was mane to have been an upgrade; we paid more than my parents and their room was bigger and nicer.
Review 50:close to wedding venue
Review 51:The venue showed a very tired state of decoration and our bathroom was cold. The reception area was poorly sighted and not particularly attractive. The wedding celebrations being carried on outside our bedroom window was not conducive for sleeping
Review 52:The room smelt and the wall paper was coming off the walls. The base of the shower was brown and the carpet had holes in it. Can't say all room were the same maybe just that one.
Review 53:Staff were really hopeful and friendly.
Review 54:Whilst the location is excellent this hotel is not disable friendly .Floors uneven, lots of steps/stairs for all areas. Not shown at allon website prior to booking
Review 55:Staff very friendly and helpful where possible
Review 56:I found it a little expensive but it didn't help with the euro exchange rate I had to take at the banks but I suppose that's not entirely the hotels fault but it could have been a little less expensive.
Review 57:Comfortable bed with nice quiet room to relax and there was also a good bar food menu. The hotel was in a good location with not far to walk to town centre, bars , shops etc. it was also in a location that suited me well to travel to the Silverstone race circuit. There was also secure parking off the street which was also a plus and finally there was pleasant staff to deal with.
Review 58:This hotel is looking a bit old and tatty, could do with re-furb. Bad lighting in bathrooms, leaking shower, wallpaper hanging off the wall etc. 4 stars is very generous.
Review 59:Convenient location.
Review 60:I found the room small and bed uncomfortable its old so floorboards make noise
Review 61:It's a nice friendly place location was good and parking although a small car park was free bedroom was cleaned daily
Review 62:Room very small, barely a room for a Bed (Room#6) Breakfast a disaster, order not processed so waiting 50 minutes for hot food, on arrival the order was wrong... Bad day in the kitchen!
Review 63:Reception Staff excellent
Review 64:The staff were friendly enough, but service slow, and we don't approve of festival wristbands on waitresses serving food. There's no lift as it's an old building but with a young child and lots of luggage, negotiating all the narrow windy staircases to a second floor room was a real pain. We weren't offered an alternative after commenting on it. There are damp problems everywhere, with towels lining the walls in some places upstairs.
Review 65:The bed was comfy - although the whole bedroom sloped to one side.
Review 66:Room very basic but comfortable. Woodchip and paint walls not so good. No plug in sink and hot water very slow but shower good. Would have been expensive at full price
Review 67:Location and Friendliness of staff
Review 68:One bed was wobbly, but staff checked it and all castors intact. Must have been uneven floorboards, not surprising in an old building. Moved bed to the side and slept very well.
Review 69:Location of hotel perfect, staff cheerful and helpful. Evening meal and breakfast good and value for money.
Review 70:Noisy in the night, water been ran in other rooms or tank filling up on regular basis throughout the night
Review 71:Location, room size, breakfast very nice and staff all very friendly
Review 72:Service at breakfast was very haphazard, tables left uncleared, I had to get cutlery for myself and husband, got the impression that breakfast area was understaffed, also no orange juice available throughout our stay
Review 73:Staff very friendly and helpful, breakfast food exceptionally good (quality), bed very comfy
Review 74:Breakfast was not the best; no muffins, bananas were split and past their best and cooked breakfast was basic and not filling
Review 75:Cleanliness of hotel and friendliness of staff.
Review 76:Noise from a wedding party, which we had not been informed of. Bar was closed for the evening. Creaking bed, room was very shabby;extractor fan did not work.
Review 77:Food was good and staff friendly.
Review 78:The building is quite old and the corridors really used. No elevators.Somebody could have offered to help with the luggage. At breakfast thebananas were old and the muffins not fresh. Cleaning lady startedhoovering during breakfast time.
Review 79:We arrived really late but the receptionist was still friendly andgiving information. Even though the building is old, the rooms andbathrooms were fine. The eggs and toast at breakfast were tasty and thecut fruit fresh.
Review 80:Ask for room at back of hotel because you are on the main road at the top of high street. Very noisey Room was smelly especially bathroom.
Review 81:Good location to town center, polish gentleman working on reception was lovely. Had good bar and restaurant in hotel. Overall an ok hotel if your just stopping for few days.
Review 82:Understaffed, ignored for 20 mins at breakfast then when we asked to place our order were told 'wait a minute'.
Review 83:Friendly welcome from male on reception.
Review 84:there is nothing to dislike.
Review 85:My favourite is Staff: always smiling and caring. 2- Hamburger: who is staying here should try hamburger. no need to go anywhere for meal.
Review 86:Bedroom and bathroom could do with a fresh look.
Review 87:Very good location for walking into Banbury. Free parking and good wi-fi. Breakfast excellent. Al la carte menu options at no extra cost.
Review 88:Long wait for breakfast and could not access wiFi
Review 89:Very friendly staff, clean and comfortable beds, good food in restaurant, all round an excellent short stay.
Review 90:Room was dark and the lighting was insufficient. It was located above the kitchen and it was noisy. There was an unpleasant smell throughout the room.
Review 91:Manager and staff
Review 92:Our room was on the front of the hotel which was noisy. Plenty of traffic during the night!!
Review 93:Location central and good for public transport if required. Staff friendly and helpful Breakfast - good variety and well cooked.
Review 94:Room extremely noisy most of the night because of road traffic. No shower - only inadequate handheld attachment to bath taps. No hot water. WiFi too fiddly to log on.
Review 95:Staff were friendly Breakfast was good
Review 96:I am 88 and my partner 72, we would have appreciated help with our luggage
Review 97:Very good Malbec with reasonable roast dinner; location good for town and free parking
Review 98:Extremely poor service in restaurant at dinner. No wine buckets available. Service VERY slow. One main course very dry, obviously left under hot plate for too long. Staff although pleasant seemed very inexperienced.
Review 99:Very pleasant room and helpful staff.
Review 100:We didn't have a bad experience but I felt the old place needed freshening up with a coat of paint the room we was in was very tired looking and the bathroom /shower needed updating ....not sorry we booked in there we would definitely come again.
Review 101:I was born in banbury so visiting the town was a plus for me we have never stayed here before but we have eaten many times over the years lovely old place lots of old photos of banbury......we live in Cyprus so you don't get the same feel of the history.
Review 102:Breakfast was chaotic. Staff didn't communicate. We made a whole group late as we were waiting so long for our food.
Review 103:The room was lovely, free parking was great, good location.
Review 104:My evening dinner being offered round diners because the staff could not match it to me. Also being given the pass key as a room key.
Review 105:The obliging breakfast staff and nice food
Review 106:Pleasant staff who remembered my parents staying last year. Clean comfortable rooms and a good breakfast. Again they were well looked after and would return.
Review 107:After waiting at the reception desk for more than 10 minutes we were eventually served. I was not particularly impressed when having given our name to one of the passing staff the 'manager' needed me to repeat it. Our room (we paid for an upgrade) was located about as far from the front desk as you could get but unfortunately overlooked the marquee that had been erected in the courtyard at the rear of the premises. The birthday party lingered on into the night rendering sleep impossible until the guests had departed around 1.00am. Breakfast had us waiting once again with an obvious understaffing. After 15 minutes our order was eventually taken and things returned to a more normal service.
Review 108:Well placed for walking round the town of Banbury. Comfortable room with quirky sloping floors.
Review 109:waited more than half an hour for breakfast on the second morning of our stay. eventually left the hotel hungry!
Review 110:friendly staff and easy check-in. location is perfect
Review 111:Room 17 bathroom door did not close. Surprised there was no bath. Only a shower. Tables at breakfast were not cleared due to lack of staff. Staff member was trying her best and very polite but she needed help as she was rushed off her feet.
Review 112:Comfy bed. Polite staff.
Review 113:We got back to the hotel after our night out just before 11 but were told the bar was closed. As residents, we would have expected a drink - we would have been willing to take it to our room if necessary.
Review 114:Food was excellent, as was the service.
Review 115:Room was on the small side for the 2 of us
Review 116:Breakfast was a brilliant choice and a lovely bubbly lady serving . Quiet room apart from the creaking floor but hey it's an old property Hotel ticked the boxes for what we needed it for. Food in the bar was served very quick and again a good menu to choose from
Review 117:The bar closing at 11pm is a shame. Not being able to get a coffee at 10.30 pm as machine was cleaned also a shame.
Review 118:The location was great and staff were very friendly.
Review 119:We paid extra for "superior" room which reeked of cigarette smoke. The management tried to convince us that this had come from outside; we were on the second floor and 50m from the garden!!! The room was cleaned again but then just smelt of air freshener and cigarette smoke!! Moved to another room but hotel only had a standard room with interconnecting door with adjacent room and on busy road side of hotel. Adjacent occupants rolled in drunk at 12.30pm very noisy and TV on loud. Went to find hotel management to sort problem but hotel was completely devoid of staff! Complained next morning and management reluctantly agreed to refund the £20 difference in cost between superior and standard room. After 3 weeks credit card still not credited despite numerous calls to hotel. Took it up with Green King who eventually refunded the £20. Overall a thoroughly disappointing experience.
Review 120:The only positive element was the breakfast!
Review 121:The wifi was one of those Sign up here things, I just want the password and be able to get on with it. Hardly the end of the world, but still.
Review 122:Exactly what I would expect for what I paid. Room was comfy & staff very friendy. If you want the moon on a stick for 50 quid a night, it's not for you. For everyone else its really good.
Review 123:booked on line asking for a room on the ground floor as my elderly mother has access problems. A room 2 floors upstairs was allocated but this was changed to the first floor when I queried the access. This remained a problem for my elderly mother. Poor tea making facility. Walk from the car park with uneven path and steps, difficult for a person with mobility problems
Review 124:Breakfast, wonderful comfy bed, polite staff, bar facility. Parking was no problem
Review 125:Thrilled with the bedlinen and bed. Staff delightful and location perfect for eating out or eating in! Breakfast menu excellent and quality good. A fantastic deal! Would definitely use again!
Review 126:Asked for a quiet room but got one at the front of the building on the second floor so quite noisy from passing traffic. Also disappointed with television, interference on some channels which put an end to a film I was wanting to watch.
Review 127:Breakfast, beautiful mushroom omelette and good full English
Review 128:Really friendly staff. Great food and the room was clean and spacious. This hotel in right in the centre of of Banbury and has free parking round the back.
Review 129:The only thing I didn't like was that to get hot water for the bath you had to let it run for like 15 mins so it would get warm but that is every else was amazing
Review 130:The service was a overall good experience and the food was amazing the staff were really helpful and the location was really nice so I would recommend this hotel to anyone I know
Review 131:We have stayed here before but this time we had a room on the front of the hotel and this proved a bit noisy because of traffic and what sounded like car racers until around midnight. This particular room was very small - had to duck your head to avoid the T.V. screen as you moved round the end of bed. The bathroom was also very small and the shower had been installed for someone at least six foot tall - it was not possible to adjust the shower height and, being only 5 foot 2 tall, I was unable to see the markings which regulate the temperature!
Review 132:God location. Good free parking. Welcoming and helpful staff. Warm room. Very good breakfast.
Review 133:The floorboards in the bedroom were loose and shifted under foot. The bathroom was very basic.
Review 134:Breakfast was delicious and a great choice of foods. The bar /lounge area is relaxing and has a nice ambience
Review 135:Not really a bad experience but when running water into the sink, gave up too soon waiting for warm/ hot water. Shower warmed up a little more quickly, then all was OK!with p[lenty of hot water.
Review 136:Comfortable room, pleasant staff, good outlook, fine breakfast
Review 137:On arrival we were informed there were no cot beds for my friends 1 year old. When I showed them the booking confirmation and my request to booking.com regarding a cot I was then told by the lady behind the counter that my booking on the system did not include a cot and that we could find alternative accommodation. As it was late in the evening and the baby was exhausted we decided that we needed to stay as the room had already been paid for. Then we were told the manager would come and find us in our room to see if anything could be sorted. An hour and a half later no one had come to find us so we went back to reception to be greeted by another member of staff who said he was the supervisor in charge, he clearly hadn't been informed of our situation or been told to look for us. He was also trying to argue that the booking didn't show a cot bed (after showing my confirmation email again he then stopped being rude). He then said he would have a look for a it bed. 10pm he knocked on our door with a travel cot!! (only around 15 minutes after speaking to him). All resolved and everyone was happy. Overall don't like being accused of lying about the original booking and the original staff member to have been as unhelpful as she had been
Review 138:Hotel was lovely, room was clean.
Review 139:The only negative comment would be that our bathroom (room 14) was cold owing to the old metal casement window not fitting well and a blind is needed.
Review 140:Didnt think the superior room was very special more shabby than chic. Unfriendly male reception person. Restaurant lacking atmosphere. Poor sunday menu, ate elsewhere. Didnt do any sandwiches sunday lunchtime once again went elsewhere.
Review 141:Friendly breakfast staff . Very clean. Free wfi
