Reviews for The Marine Hotel
Review 1:Not enough space in the bar when there are coach parties staying. The bar is too small when the hotel is full. Can coach parties not use the function rooms on the ground floor. You don't want to be sitting in your room when you are on holiday because the bar is full.
Review 2:The friendly staff make you feel at home. That's why we keep returning.
Review 3:after enjoying a pleasant time in the evening we went upstairs to bed, however we did not manage any sleep until after 3:00 am due to some other guests having a noisy party in the adjacent room.
Review 4:we asked for an other room as the allocated one did not have a good view, this was done without any problem, staff were very efficient at reception as were all staff in all other areas, food was good and well presented, room was clean and well furnished.
Review 5:As above
Review 6:Restaurant has no atmosphere whatsoever for Xmas its clinical cold and poorly devices, get decent warm curtains warm coloured carpets and better secluded lighting , more romantic with an open fire, won't fine there again!!!'
Review 7:Did not like the breakfasts. Coffee was like tar.the bar and lounge area was badly needing refurbishing. One settee was covered with material to hide the wear and tear.
Review 8:Cosy rooms. Leisure facilities. Near the sea.
Review 9:My only criticism would be the lack of insulation in the floorboards. I could hear every step and movement from the couple upstairs and I am sure the person below me felt I too was a fairy elephant!
Review 10:Helpful jolly staff.
Review 11:The cleanliness was somewhat lacking, particularly round the windows. The windows also let a slight draft in, as they were old and a little frayed. This made it a little cold at times. No temperature controls as some modern hotels offer in the room.
Review 12:Nice location with good access to many towns. Building is generally nice.
Review 13:We had booked disabled room. The room was on small side and the disabled ensuite had a shower over the bath which despite lots of handles was totally useless for a disabled person. The front door access ramp was considerably steeper than regulations require We dined in the restaurant on the first night and found the quality of the food poor for a 4star hotel.
Review 14:Friendly staff. We ate in the bar on our second night and enjoyed excellent fish and chips
Review 15:Hotel nice but a little tired. Staff are pleasant and do try but are presenting a older hotel with one or two issues. Room very basic. No hair dryer in room.
Review 16:Great location and views
Review 17:Rooms very tired and in need of upgrading and modernisation. No minibar and not even a complimentary bottle of water supplied.
Review 18:Lovely classic old hotel. Decent facilities. Very Good breakfast. Excellent location.
Review 19:We only had one night booked in. I felt the room was a bit small, had we been staying longer I would have been disappointmented bearing in mind we have stayed in many hotels in this group and had larger rooms.
Review 20:Location, hotel facilities.
Review 21:Shower pole loose on wall and shower very very slow to drain. Our room was very compact with view into centre of building, would request room with view if staying in future.
Review 22:Lovely location, beautiful building and very friendly staff. Very clean Room.
Review 23:I didn't like it when I found out that other guests paid under £50 per. night for dinner/bed and breakfast, whilst we paid £333.20 for 3 nights bed and breakfast? Mentioned this to reception staff, they just brushed me off, a lesson well learnt I think, but still disappointing. I was also given wrong information about menu prices by a member of staff. It was the principle that annoyed me.
Review 24:The views, location, service, ambience of hotel. The menu and the food. were excellent too.
Review 25:Obviously, staff lacking management supervision and not enough of them to offer anything remotely like an enjoyable stay. Not once were we even offered drinks service in the bar, lounge or outside veranda we had to fetch self service style from the bar after we cleared table space. The food can best be described as like the curates egg. My partners meal in the famous Two Fat Ladies restaurant was better than fine, mine was a disgrace and totally unacceptable at this level.
Review 26:Stunning Location
Review 27:We really all felt that although the staff aim to please - things seem to be disorganised. This was the same on our previous trip. We even sent a food back and got charged. The staff member agreed he wouldn't eat it but still charged us.
Review 28:We all loved the hotel and have stayed as the same group before. We especially enjoy the location and the friendliness of the staff.
Review 29:Slow service and given it's largely a golfing trip for guests, to not be showing a major on any TV seemed strange
Review 30:Great location for golf courses in the area
Review 31:Lounge furnishings dilapidated. Lounge lack of staff, therefore lack of attention. The walk / stairs from Reception to Room.
Review 32:Being in Troon. Would have enjoyed the leisure facilities if I'd had time.
Review 33:Poor service at breakfast, hotel common areas are tired and requiring attention. Feels like the hotel feeds of its captive golfing audience rather than paying attention to itself as a stand alone venue.
Review 34:Given keys to a room already booked couole disturbed Then given a ground floor room window glass broken and taped up ill fitting curtain no shiwer cap. Had a caesar salad. Inedible and was nit charged fir it as they agreed with my opinion
Review 35:Nothing
Review 36:I thought the windows in my room were looking a bit tired. It is a bit expensive.
Review 37:Very friendly nice staff. Lovely views. Large tasty breakfasts. Warm clean comfortable room.
Review 38:The general decor in the hotel could do with upgrading it is a bit dated and worn. Some extra money could be spent on improving the quality of things like the toilet paper.
Review 39:The staff were very friendly. The breakfast was great.
Review 40:Rooms have become very dated and in need of update. Dirty carpets and curtains hanging off rail. Overall not the standard of decor expected.
Review 41:The restaurant position gives lovely views and breakfast is always good. We have stayed in the hotel on numerous occasions but find the whole hotel now needs upgrading.
Review 42:This is my 4th time at the marine previous 3 visits where faultless , This time we were allocated room 35 , We went along to the room to be met with can only be described as a dark hovel , Bits of wood off the desk , The window frames where dirty and with wood falling off , Holes in the wall were a trouser press once stood and not replaced , The carpet was in strips with visible stiching , The bath panel was rotted all along the bottom , And the best of all the view !! A brick wall about 4 feet away from the window !! Meant to be 4 star accomadation but this room was no more than 2 star at the very most , I complained and was moved room eventually but we were only there for 1 night and this put a dampener on the rest of the night as I was really annoyed they would stick anyone in this room
Review 43:Staff were excellent
Review 44:Minor grumble is that there is no hairdryer in the room.
Review 45:Beautiful hotel in a picturesque setting on Royal Troon Golf course, magnificent sea views, spotlessly clean, well appointed rooms and amazingly comfortable beds! Spa facilities used and enjoyed. Friendly efficient staff and excellent service. Excellent breakfast. Would not hesitate to book again.
Review 46:Had to wait nearly an hour for our room on arrival and were unable to book a table for dinner at the time we would have liked so had to change our plans for the evening.
Review 47:Hotel was clean, friendly helpful staff and good value for money. would definitely stay again. Food in restaurant was excellent.
Review 48:Great welcome, rooms superb view of in need of a little TLC. Evening meal good but service absolutely awful, waited half an hour for wine and another half an hour for food, with no explanation . Breakfast expensive
Review 49:I loved the welcome at reception after coming in from the rain. Smiles and warmth. We had a lovely relaxing view in the bar before eating in the restaurant. Wonderful food and a great selection of wines.
Review 50:Gave us a complimentary 'upgrade' on the day, but the room could have been presented better.
Review 51:Janice (at reception) and gentleman on door were fantastic and very courteous,
Review 52:The location is awesome lively town and most of all the weather was fantastic . Being a golfer I loved the fact I could see 18th hole of a famous golf course
Review 53:Spa steam broken we were asked at check in if we were going to use the spa but we were not told it was out of order. TV signal bad and other TV not functioning. Badly stained carpets huge draft from bathroom window. Ordered newspaper never arrived. Additional amounts wrongly added to our Bill. Good breakfast Fab location but old sadly maintained building & facilities
Review 54:Breakfast was a little chaotic.
Review 55:The building is lovely. The bar is comfortable, friendly and welcoming and is well staffed. Great views. The food was excellent. The service great. The room was generally okay but good value for the money. Good WiFi.
Review 56:we could not get any dinner in the restuarant we got a bar meal but we wanted the other resturant menu we could have be offered the resturant menu but to eat in the bar . the windows in the bedroom we rotten and looked as though they would fall out
Review 57:great room
Review 58:Overall the hotel is very tired and in need of updating. Furniture in lounge/bar worn and lighting dreary.
Review 59:Location. Perfect for long walk along the beach. Food in the bar nice but pricey. Breakfast very good.
Review 60:Bed was like a rock, could not sleep and had sore back the next day! Worst bed I have ever slept in.
Review 61:Everything about this hotel was perfect apart from the rock hard bed.
Review 62:Staff did not really cope that well with a very full house for breakfast on the Sunday morning. Parts of our order failed to arrive.
Review 63:Which we are not but it is right on the course. That puts it a little out of town but we prefer that and there's a good local taxi service and buses during the day. Nice leisure centre and great evening meal in the restaurant. Quiet and therefore always a good night's sleep.
Review 64:Confusion at reception when the hotel allocated a single room when two doubles had been booked, then the response was they didn't have any doubles left. I could not see the reason in their response due to the fact we had early pre booked the doubles and we were checking in at the required 3pm. I am still awaiting the refund they promised would be allocated. This is not a 4 star hotel.
Review 65:Good location if you like golf
Review 66:We had been in this room a few years back and it had not been updated. Dressing table was on a slope and everything rolled off. TV table made a loud noise every time we passed it so had to keep it permanently open. On the second evening we dined in the restaurant and service was very slow. There seemed to be no senior management in attendance. On the whole, our stay was not good value for money.
Review 67:Huge, comfortable bed.
Review 68:Bed needed a M&S topper on the top of the mattress to make it more comfortable. As in almost all hotels guests bang their doors at all times of the day, with no consideration for other guests. Please shut doors quietly.
Review 69:Liked almost everything. A good hotel in a great location
Review 70:My room overlooked kitchen got bitten numerous times by bed bug. Charged for two breakfasts only one night booking. Staff in bar are poorly trained. Had bar food still waiting for mayonaise!!!
Review 71:We arrived early to check in. Receptionist didn't have our booking. We booked through booking.com and luckily I printed and brought with me our confirmation. We were asked to wait in the bar while it was sorted out but this took at least 20-30mins. I would definately recommend taking written confirmation of booking as there was another gentleman complaining about the same but he wasn't given a room!!
Review 72:Hotel is close to the town centre and golf course on your doorstep. Lovely walks along the beach or streets. Bedroom was comfortable and clean. Fair size. Never used the leisure facilities but will do next time. Staff very polite and helpful
Review 73:The fact the bar staff had no idea how to make and serve cocktails in one of Scotland's premier hotels also things added to my bill that weren't mine!
Review 74:The location
Review 75:It shouldn't have been so hard to record the details of our stay on the system.
Review 76:The location was good - by the sea & near amenities. The staff didn't always 'get it right' but were enthusiastic to help & very friendly.
Review 77:Small bedroom, tacky and not nicely decorated. The windows were old and badly maintained. Our bedroom was facing the top of the first floor, a kind of roof dirty and poorly maintained.
Review 78:The location by the sea and the golf course
Review 79:I was a little surprised by the standard of room whilst it was clean and comfortable it lacked any wow factor and looked a little tired.
Review 80:The staff the area the two fat ladies restaurant...I can see why you get fat!! Enjoyed the pool if a little shallow and the bar overlooking the sea. Had a great view from my room of the sea, golf course and isle of Arran.
Review 81:Hotel is tired and badly in need of a renovation. Rooms were old and tired, bathrooms the same. Rooms looked NOTHING like the ones on the website ... so be warned. Had stayed once before and had a very poor room allocated then. Asked to change rooms and second room was worse than the first as it smelt badly. Called in to the hotel in person a month before this visit and explained about first visit not being nice and politely requested a nice room. Receptionist was lovely and helpful and was told I would be allocated a nice room overlooking the golf course and she added a note on the reservations computer to this effect. What happened...? I was given a very basic and souless room overlooking the back of the hotel!! There are much nicer hotels to stay in in Troon... who value your custom. Can't recommend this as a hotel to stay at.... sorry :-(
Review 82:Location.... but all positives end once you enter the Hotel... be warned... better places to stay nearby in Troon.
Review 83:No radio on television Lack of batteries in remote control and for my brother's safe even after request. Room keys cancelled after 5 days
Review 84:Stunning view across to Arran Quiet room as requested Majority of staff very helpful and pleasant.
Review 85:Confusion about the details of my booking I was directed to a table for breakfast that hadn't yet been refreshed for the next guest - not a problem, because another table was available, but a slip in attention to detail.
Review 86:The venue is on the coast The staff were cheerful, friendly and helpful The room was comfortable and quiet The variety and quality of breakfast and bar food and room service was very good
Review 87:we found the size of the room and bathroom disappointing for the rate charged, and a number of small issues(temperamental kettle, standard lamp not working, wall lamp fictures loose/squint, leaking sink in bathroom, dirty looking bath seals that could do with replacing.
Review 88:The staff were very courteous and friendly, and the common areas and facilities within the hotel were rather good. The outstanding location is a major plus.
Review 89:We were in the new annex of the hotel, walls quite thin - could hear next door up early, showering etc!
Review 90:Bar and communal areas beautifully appointed. Staff were also excellent, very friendly and helpful. It's a great location only minutes from troon town centre and the restaurant has a beautiful view overlooking the golf and the beach. Was only there for 2 days but felt like I'd been there longer. Would highly recommend for a recharging of the batteries getaway!
Review 91:Quite a long wait on food in restaurant. Had to ask a couple of times for drinks and coffes took 50 min after our meal. Also a lot of food on menu were unavailable.
Review 92:Nice pool. Nice food.
Review 93:The hotel is old and tired . It needs a serious upgrade and attenton on the cleanliness. The pricing was shocking for a room that resembled a cell ( no outlook only roofs) the windows had not been cleaned in months. I found the whole experience shocking for prices charged,
Review 94:The location.
Review 95:Dinner was excellent on the first night but service poor. On our third night, the service was excellent but the food second-rate. Felt that the 'franchised' Restaurant made it and its staff less of a part of the hotel overall.
Review 96:The grace and ambience of this traditional, historic hotel.
Review 97:Insufficent Bar Staff Service in Bar Bar food insufficent portions for price paid and lack of garnish to improve the dish
Review 98:Pool Location Friendly service at Lunch in Two Fat Ladies Restuarant
Review 99:Our room over-looked the sea which was lovely but the window rattled all night with the wind! Also, the room was a little small.
Review 100:Excellent staff. Friendly. Good leisure facilities.
Review 101:Staff too casual, late opening for breakfast and sour faced waitress, problem with card key and no apology from reception
Review 102:Restaurant, great food and lovely views
Review 103:- got our booking requirements wrong despite the fact that I had telephoned 3 days previously to double check - rooms very small - breakfast tables not cleared - bar food poor - not great value for money because of this
Review 104:- location - peacefulness - dinner - dealt with issues quickly & professionally
Review 105:Room did not match up up to modern cheaper hotels i.e. no air conditioning, no mini bar , no couch etc
Review 106:Location and seaviews at lounge and dining area.
Review 107:Hotel looking tired in need of decoration especially outside Paint flaking off the window frames. Mould around bath seal and bath plug broken, bulb in room lamp not working Would have expected more from a 4 star hotel
Review 108:Location good Room comfortable but needing some fresh decoration Good breakfast served
Review 109:I dont know who rated this place but when the fare is microwaved undercooked chicken, hard as rock Stornoway Blackpudding along with over cooked vegetables and American OVEN fries they obviously must be impressed by the way the plate is decorated or they're taking a bribe. Don't try, you may as well drive to Ayr and have a decent bar meal at third of the price. The room we had overlooked the kitchen roofs and what looked like a community centre next door, that coupled with the outdated decor and the tired furniture did not impress. Definitely not the place for romance, unless it's with one of the pretty waitresses.
Review 110:Hotel is in an excellent position overlooking the golf course and the sea. The staff were extremely courteous and helpful, shame about the room and food.
Review 111:Fantastic views helped by the weather! Staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was stunning, large size and comfortable. Great game of racquet ball followed by a lovely bar meal. Will definately return and recommend a stay, also dog friendly if you want to take your pooch.
Review 112:The room no 35 was a digrace we faced into a brick wall.I complained twice to be told no other rooms were available to pay 174 for that was terrible I work very hard for that and I felt that I was just fobbed off not even a complimentary drink when I explained it was a birthday treat . I will not go back to the hotel.
Review 113:The location is beatiful and staff in restaurant were very good.
Review 114:Decor very tired. Did not use pool/spa so cannot comment.
Review 115:Location, breakfast
Review 116:Staff where fantastic , Hotel was lovely and clean
Review 117:Good location, great swimming pool over all excellent
Review 118:Very good hotel
Review 119:Staff couldn't do enough and health club is excellent
Review 120:Its simple a lovely hotel with great service and food
Review 121:Great location and great hotel.
Review 122:need more bar staff on Saturday night too far from town centre
Review 123:the food in the restaurant was delicious
Review 124:Great relaxing stay staff very helpful
Review 125:No room in bar area after meal to relax and enjoy a drink
Review 126:the leisure facilities
Review 127:staff could not be any more helpful and room was really comfortable, meals were good
Review 128:Hotel a bit tired in places, needs some investment Bedrooms very small for the price
Review 129:Very friendly staff Comfortable beds
Review 130:Poor room for the price.
Review 131:Great location
Review 132:Tiny amount of food on main course plate
Review 133:Location, facilities, breakfast.
Review 134:Hotel very tired needs updating. Frequent user of the gym needs investment.
Review 135:Location on golf course
