Reviews for Alona Hotel

Review 1:Not a bad experience, but if you can believe it, in January, in Scotland, the room was too hot! We switched radiators off at 6pm, but the room was still too hot at 3am. Not really a complaint - just a little uncomfortable warmth-wise for us.

Review 2:Good central hotel. Breakfast was very good with lots of choice. Staff attentive, but thankfully, not too attentive.

Review 3:Good location by the motorway, hotel is right by the lake and park so nice and quiet. Nice choice at breakfast including items direct from the kitchen rather than usual buffet fayre.

Review 4:The reception staff were very helpful putting us in room away from the rugby club dance. We were not disturbed. The room was well presented with good facilties for coffee etc. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom well furnished with great shower. Had a very good 3 course evening meal. Restuarant staff polite and helpful.

Review 5:In its publicity, the hotel claims excellence and a desire to do everything to ensure guests have a good experience. However, on arrival, when we advised the receptionist that the fan in the bathroom did not work, she replied, "Oh, the mirrors don't steam up." Steamed up mirrors was NOT our concern!! The décor in hotel in general, our room and bathroom was tired and dated. Tiles were lifting from the bathroom floor, and cleanliness was just OK. Pillows were flat and hard. The Glasshouse Bar and Restaurant had no atmosphere and very few customers. The restaurant was decorated for Christmas, with a tree and step candles in the windows. However, none of them were lit up, which didn't add much festive spirit. Food was only average. Certainly NOT a four star hotel. All in all, a disappointing stay.

Review 6:Close to the motorway.

Review 7:Banquet meal at night (after event) was not so high standard, sufficient but that's all.

Review 8:All staff were very pleasant and polite, and responded to every need when asked.

Review 9:Food could have been warmer at breakfast. Pillow rock solid. Expensive bar for soft drinks. road in has huge speed bumps(nothing you can do)

Review 10:Rooms clean, comfy bed, helpful staff. Good location. Would recommend to others.

Review 11:The staff on duty at evening meal ignored us when we first came in to dinner and were not over friendly during and after the meal.

Review 12:The location and standard of room.

Review 13:We weren't told what wasn't on available from the menu prior to ordering - meant we had to change order a couple of times after making minds up and then them saying they didn't have any...

Review 14:Nice rooms - lovely shower. Food in restaurant very nice..

Review 15:Lovely hotel, the staff could not have been more pleasant, complimentary glass of wine when we arrived and we enjoyed a beautiful meal in the restaurant at night. Perfect.

Review 16:The hotel suffers through the lack of a proper lounge area, with what seating there is packed into one open space with the bar and restaurant. Drinks prices (beer especially) are too high, given the hotel's isolated position. The breakfast toasters (with their feeble elements) could do with replacement by a conveyor type. The room's sound insulation was poor - first night suffered from the person in the room above pacing up and down and, later in the week, noise from the disco in the function suite annexe was overpowering.

Review 17:Excellent food, but although the menu was interesting, the limited number of items made it boring in the second week. There were no 'specials.' Re noise problem mentioned in the :-( section .... reception staff reacted promptly when I complained and the volume was reduced considerably.

Review 18:The booking was wrong despite having it confirmed that we had 2 x superior double rooms on arrival it turned out that one was was actually a twin, the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in. WiFi didn't work in the room, this is the 2nd time I have stayed at the Alana and WiFi didn't work on the previous occasion either. Whilst checking out I picked up on the fact that my bill was incorrect by some £150, this was deducted as you would expect but no explanation for it being there was offered. On the topic of the booking mix-up, when checking in receptionist suggested the following; Option 1 - I was encouraged to swap rooms with my business colleague (as he had a double) clearly not an option. Option 2 to seek some kind of reduced rate when reservations would be available the following morning whilst checking out (as there was nothing she could do to help). I did follow this up with reservations and was awarded a £12 reduction in the cost for mix-up and a genuine (I felt) apology for the same, but no explanation for how or why it happened.

Review 19:Close proximity to our customer office in Hamilton.

Review 20:chef went that extra mile at breakfast cooking my gluten free meal separately - being able to make sure my diet is not compromised is very important to eating well and feeling secure whilst I am away.

Review 21:Staff seemed uninterested at reception and didn't even ask if we enjoyed our stay. Food wasn't that great either. Evening meal wasn't great and breakfast was over cooked.

Review 22:Cleanliness and room

Review 23:Overflowing bins outside front entrance (cigarettes) and poor wifi in accommodation areas Just a couple of minor things which I'm confident will be remedied

Review 24:Pleasant surroundings

Review 25:no bath just a shower room was facing car park which has late night joyriders and I always ask for the same room away from this side. didn't happen and could not be chewed to change..

Review 26:people were good and helpful

Review 27:Arrived for a weekend, was not informed either by a courtesy e mail or at the check in desk that a wedding was on that weekend. Our room was directly opposite wedding venue. If we had had an e mail we could have made alternative arrangements. We will stay at the Alona again but not on wedding weekends.

Review 28:Comfortable surroundings. Access to motorway

Review 29:The only comment I would make is that the room was rather warm during the night.

Review 30:The staff were well organised at Breakfast and we had a table to accommodate our entire party of 9 people. We also liked the connecting rooms!

Review 31:only thing i didnt like was brekfast finished at 10 which seemed a bit early in my opinion!

Review 32:everything was brilliant! restaurant food was worth the price alone! :D

Review 33:Excellent food. Welcoming staff (Gary). All staff were very pleasant and could not have done enough for us. Lovely to have live music playing while we dined

Review 34:Shower very low so at 6ft 4in - you had to really duck to get under it. Roadworks are a pain so difficult getting out in morning

Review 35:Rooms clean, food good and staff friendly and efficient

Review 36:Disappointed that we couldn't enjoy a cocktail in the lounge unless we were dining. Maybe this was because we were a young couple? As other people were served alcohol in the lounge who weren't dining. The wifi was very poor, better signal from data. Had to wait approx 20mins on breakfast trays being reloaded to then still have no eggs or bacon.

Review 37:The room was very hot and didn't have a child friendly window to open. There was a patio style door to open, but this would've been a distraction for excited kids trying to get to sleep. No hooks for jackets.

Review 38:The hot drink facilities were shut away in a cupbord. Nothing for the kids to break or play with when they shouldn't.

Review 39:M&d carpark was at rear of hotel where our room was and we were wakened during night by 2 cars joyriding with revving engines, nights sleep ruined and we had a long journey ahead next day

Review 40:Everything else went really well from booking, check in to leaving

Review 41:Although the room was supposed to be a Superior there was no Air con And was therefore too hot on the Night.

Review 42:Enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in bright airy restaurant and food was very good. Have stated at the Alona previously.

Review 43:Bathroom floor dirty Breakfast got to breakfast 45 min before close No one todooettes no tomatoes Orange juice tasted like it had dishwashing liquid in it

Review 44:Nothing

Review 45:hotel room next to wedding marquee and music blasting through late hours of night/early morning. No warning at the reception to this. Would suggest that they think of none wedding guests and offer to move away from this side of hotel. When asked if I have had a good stay at check out I explained I had no sleep. Was given plenty of excuses but no apology and no offer for reduced bill or any compensation. Very disappointing if I had any sleep and energy I would have challenged this. Oh and when I went down in the middle of the night to reception to find out how long this music would last no one around.

Review 46:Hotel Clean & Restaurant lovely this was all let down by main point of a hotel sleep!!

Review 47:There was a wedding reception booked and the noise went on until 2am. Internet is diabolical might as well not be advertised. No parking available due to wedding guests.

Review 48:Absolutely loved the evening menu in the hotel restaurant. It was that nice we didn't even bother looking to go anywhere else. Hotel in a lovely spot by the side of a loch and in the park. A good fairground as well just past the Hotel, would be ideal for families. Fair closes at 6:00. A hotel to go back to.

Review 49:What you have get for hot breakfast often depends on when you arrive in the restaurant. Some staff know little about technical help for TV.

Review 50:Location, rooms, atmosphere.

Review 51:sofabed was a too small for 2 children age 11 and 13 - 11 year old had to sleep on the floor.. Radiator too hot - caused a burn Wifi not consistent

Review 52:Accommodated our bikes Flexible staff - early breakfast Great evening meal - breakfast limited

Review 53:Only thing I can say is not much in hotel to do, but M&D's is right next to it so not really complainin

Review 54:The staff were polite and cheerful and helpful, the room was great, fresh, amazingly clean, food was amazing too had dinner first night, did not have much for partner as he is fussy but they had went out way to make something that he would eat, no faults.

Review 55:The WiFi in the rooms was a very poor signal, even after several resets of the main system. The lighting in the room could be better.

Review 56:Staff very friendly and approachable. Rooms were lovely.

Review 57:Gary at Reception was very pleasant and professional. Food in restaurant for evening meal was excellent and breakfast was very good. House band on Saturday night very enjoyable.

Review 58:Very loud round back of hotel during the night with people in the car park doing handbrake turns and reving engines which made it hard to sleep, room was a bit too warm.

Review 59:The staff were very welcoming the room was great and clean accept from someone had drawn a spider and leggs on the cealing and my girlfriend freaked up but was funny so it's all good,

Review 60:Wi-Fi connection not great but think that is hard to get right in a big hotel.

Review 61:Meals in the restaurant were excellent and the location is nice. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Comfortable large room with a decent sized TV and great shower.

Review 62:dinner menu a bit over priced for what it was; a 4 star hotel like this should have skimmed milk available (we had to buy our own & ask for it)

Review 63:excellent location both for M74 access and for in and around Glasgow; friendly attentive staff; bedroom, toilets and public areas clean and comfortable

Review 64:I can't say anything negative about my stay.

Review 65:Room service was excellent. The food was delicious and staff were polite and friendly. It was a very comfortable room. Would go again.

Review 66:The length of my stay!! ( But not the Hotel's fault... lol)

Review 67:The attentive nature of staff!! The much improved WIFI system in the Hotel (part of my comments on last visit).

Review 68:there was nothing i didnt like.

Review 69:the staff were all very helpfull nothing to much trouble food was very good rooms very good i have stayed here a couple of times its been the same both times and i would rate the service all round excellent the staff are a credit to the hotel

Review 70:The wifi does not work in your room and it work intermittently in the hotel waiting area, is this 2015 or 2000, come on get the wifi sorted! This cannot be used as a business hotel, as you cannot work in your room!

Review 71:Staff were efficient, room was clean and tidy, basically premier inn quality. The included breakfast was good.

Review 72:I don't normally write reviews but over the last 4 years I have stayed here on a dozen or so occasions and never had a bad stay!! good value for accommodation, food and a nice touch of complimentary wine on arrival

Review 73:My room was 109. There was a tent type construction behind the hotel. The wind was strong and the roof was flapping all night which woke me on several occasions. That said it would not put me of staying again.

Review 74:Room service was prompt and the food was very good

Review 75:Seemed to be an issue with heating. Couldn't switch off radiator so slept with patio door open which wasn't too bad as stated on top floor

Review 76:I liked the staffs attention to detail, was made to feel important minute stepped through the door

Review 77:Scottish weather in December!

Review 78:Far better hotel than I was expecting. Staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Room facilities were really good, fixtures and fittings were modern and cleanliness excellent. Dining room was airy and fiendly with a good menu and reasonable prices. Would definitely recommend.

Review 79:Only criticism is getting into the carpark area there was 2 platforms which were vey small and i had to be careful not to scratch my car on the pavement thing. The entrance to carpark area should be widened for ease of parking. Room needs a bit of brightness to give it a lift... Dinner was priced at £35 per person which is a bit on the deer side.

Review 80:When you first look at the hotel it looks like a green house which is so different compared to other hotels, which makes it stand out. Staff were very polite and helpful. Rooms were a good size nice layout but I feel its a bit dull (could have done with something to brighten it up) Very clean. Shower was amazing with hot temperature which i like. They were selling really nice gifts near the reception which is amazing for tourist people.

Review 81:My wife and I receved a warm welcome upon arrival. The receptionist explained all we needed to know and booked a table for dinner Our meals we enjoyed very much! Staff attentive but not fussy. Slept well on the comfortable bed. Breakfast was freshly made and very good. Would stay again when next in the area.

Review 82:Boy racers sitting near the hotel with dance music blaring into the small hours. Not the hotels fault though.

Review 83:Good location. m&d's next door with lots to do and the Loch right on the doorstep for a nice walk and a few swing parks on the way.

Review 84:WIFI needs up grading....

Review 85:Every bit of my Stay!! Rooms spotless!! eye catching decor!! Food exceptional (willing to customise to your pleasure!) Staff Brilliant & accommodating!! Will i stay again?? No Brainer!! In a heart beat YES!!! 5*

Review 86:Lounge/room service menu not loads of choice

Review 87:This hotel is exceptional staff are very polite and willing to go extra mile very good even with my toddler room was of good quality and breakfast was great food quality great only comment could make is a better lounge/bar food menu may have helped but exceptional best hotel we have stayed in in a long time

Review 88:Although there was a free WiFi connection it was too slow to even load a web page. I need a connection to work in the evening and couldn't get anything done so for this reason alone I wouldn't stay here again.

Review 89:The staff were friendly and helpful food was ni e and the room was spacious, clean and modern.

Review 90:We were not happy when our 3 year old daughter found adult "toys" under our bed we were disgusted and worried about our childs health we had to ring the doctor when we got home

Review 91:The staff were great food was excellent but we were not happy when our 3 year old daughter found adult "toys" under our bed, we were disgusted and worried about our childs health we had to ring the doctor when we got home

Review 92:The breakfast was a little dried out and didn't reflect on the hotel very well. The food is normally excellent. The wifi struggled in the morning, far too slow and at times non-existent.

Review 93:I like the location. It may not suit everyone but for travellers from the south it's ideal and set in a very convenient and tranquil setting. The rooms are extremely comfortable and spacious and the layout of the hotel means you're never far from reception or the restaurant.

Review 94:our room was at the back if hotel next to the tent thing and for the 2 nights we stayed there there was a private party every night, they played loud music till 1/2 every night and all you could hear was drunk people shouting out side the window. We complained but they didnt offer to do anything, for the price we payed its put me off ever going again.

Review 95:the bed was huge and comfy, room was big and clean. breakfast was good also.

Review 96:As always when in scotland i try to use the Alona. The location is good for the motorway and the hotels is nice and quiet. rooms are of a good standard too.

Review 97:When we arrived, check in was very straight forward and we were offered a glass of wine... Great little touch. The room was much larger than I expected with a very comfortable bed and good size tv. We will definitely be returning!

Review 98:Parking spaces were a little mean in size.

Review 99:Having looked at most 3* and 4* in the area we opted for the Alona. Good sized rooms, quiet location & comfortable beds. The heating wasn't working on our floor and had been replaced with oil heaters - this was great as we had greater control over the heating and didn't suffer with a stuffy room.

Review 100:Weak wi-fi in room. Saying restaurant was busy when it was not.

Review 101:View of the park. Modern comfortable premises. Attentive staff. Close to motorway and local towns.

Review 102:Algae in shower, poor service at B/fast - surly & no clearing of table, general feeling of shoddiness in restaurant, poor quality of food, (cheap sausage & potato scones)

Review 103:Good size rooms clean & comfortable, handy parking.

Review 104:Shame there is no air conditioning in the rooms. Would have improved 'Quality of sleep' score. WiFi was inconsistent and kept resetting, though it was free.

Review 105:Staff were excellent. The gentleman on reception when I checked in has been excellent every visit. very professional and very accommodating. Great job. Room was comfortable and very clean.

Review 106:When we arrived I asked if I could pay by cash ( baring in mind I have stayed here more than once this year and this has never been an issue) the girl on desk was not sure of how this could be done???? So we were asked to come back and settle the bill later. We came back "later" to be greeted by another receptionist who was the most unhelpful woman on the planet!!! Who tells me that booking.com Has already taken the 60.00 out my account. Fine... The night goes on and our room, unfortunately is facing on to a wedding which Has music blaring through to the early hours of the morning, this is not hotels fault as weddings are a regular event in this hotel but surely non-wedding guests could perhaps be placed on front facing rooms away from the marquee holding a wedding? We checked out first thing, without having breakfast. Then two days later I recieve a letter and reciept of my bill Which is has now went up In price since my stay ? No extras to the room? No damage ? Strange!

Review 107:Liked leaving first thing in the morning WITHOUT breakfast I may add.

Review 108:Room was close to hotel entrance & as there was a wedding taking place the hotel was quite noisy up to 2.00 am what with taxis & loud wedding guests leaving.

Review 109:Fantastic place & family loved it. Great for access to M& D 's & the relaxed atmosphere is great for people with young family.

Review 110:The service from every member of staff this year was top class, from a very welcoming gentleman at reception to bar/waiting staff that couldn't do enough for you. Quality of food was also excellent.

Review 111:Room was too warm, and this was mid Oct in Scotland. Heaters were off so made sleeping a bit uncomfortable.

Review 112:Very friendly and welcoming staff. great location for the theme park.

Review 113:Some of the staff were rude/curt Staff had no spark about them No gym / health / spa facilities Toasters at breakfast took forever Noise of wedding in marquee outside our bedroom

Review 114:Closeness to Coatbridge/Airdrie Good value for money Good selection of food for breakfast

Review 115:Only improvement would have been a small fridge or mini bar in room. Only a minor issue!

Review 116:The deluxe double was spacious, with comfortable bed.Bathroom very modern and clean. We had a lovely view from the bedroom window. All staff were very friendly and helpful. Prices very reasonable. Food in restaurant is excellent too. Will stay here again

Review 117:The wi-fi quality was very poor to non-existent during my stay. Informed reception but it appears to be an ongoing problem.

Review 118:Restaurant dinner was excellent and received a complimentary glass of wine. Very nice outdoor facilities and walks.

Review 119:Lacks atmosphere.....a little austere. Wedding reception held in event centre attached to hotel not notified in advance (during booking) and resulted in poor nights sleep.

Review 120:Convenient location and comfortable enough for overnight stay.

Review 121:got little sleep due to a very noisy function taking place in an outside marquee-type thing. our room overlooked it and it was ridiculously loud until very late- recommend checking for functions taking place before you book

Review 122:really friendly staff, nice room, excellent food and service in restaurant, great band-

Review 123:You need a car and area difficult to navigate. Nothing to do in the evenings. Was a bit disappointed (and annoyed) that we were asked to check out about 10mins before check out time, were told rooms were needed as a wedding that day!!! Bedroom a little tired looking and sofa bed in need of replacing.

Review 124:The location was great for theme park. Lovely restaurant serving good food.

Review 125:breafast was a dissapointment. Orange juice was watered down and fried breakfast was mostly leather. Tattie scone, hash, mushrooms and beacon had all been out too long. beans were cold. fried egg fresh from the pan was good.

Review 126:room clean and tidy dinner very nice and reasonable price good car parking close to strathclyde park

Review 127:Stayed there a number of times and always find it very comfortable. Great staff who look after you and a very good Scottish breakfast to set you up for the day.

Review 128:Description of location. It's in Strathclyde Park which is lovely. It's not in Motherwell as described. Pricey during ges but at other times probably not too bad.

Review 129:Very nice room

Review 130:The pull out sofa bed was so weak that even two average size children sunk toward the middle lying in it. A simple mattress topper would have helped them sleep better.

Review 131:The staff, location, food, cleanliness and most aspects of the room.

Review 132:Nothing every thing was spot on.

Review 133:The staff were excellent and service was superb. The WiFi only worked some of the time. The only thing that could of made the stay better would be a pool but there's so much to do it doesn't really matter. Would recomend to anyone visiting surrounding area.

Review 134:Crack in bathroom sink

Review 135:Used this hotel as our base for two visits to the athletics at Hampden Park. Travel advice and transport links were good. Good access to motorway. Pleasant and attentive staff. Good food in restaurant.
