Reviews for Hillcrest Hotel

Review 1:Hotel is in a quiet area but within a few minutes walk of the city centre. Our bedroom was comfortable, clean and quiet and had a lovely view of the area. Friendly and obliging staff (owners) and Amanda in particular was always willing to help. Breakfasts were very good and served in next to no time. Great place for a weekend stay.

Review 2:The bathroom was small and unheated so towels didn't dry very well but this is a minor quibble, not detracting from the overall stay.

Review 3:good location in a quiet road overlooking the arboretum and only 5 minutes walk to the cathedral and the historic centre of Lincoln. But everything is uphill which might be difficult for those with mobility issues. The car park is very tight too but there is on street parking just outside. A good breakfast in the conservatory overlooking the garden is very pleasant!

Review 4:we had a single & double room, the double was very small we felt too small for a double, wi-fi didn't work in double room did in the single room.

Review 5:good location as up for graduation at Cathedral, good breakfast, nice staff very helpful & did put us in adjacent rooms,

Review 6:My bed was far too soft for me, and my room was up a lot of stairs and there was no lift and reception was down stairs. I am young so I coped but I would worry for elderly or people unstable on their feet.

Review 7:Close to the catherdral. Nice big room and free wifi. Friendly staff that go the extra length to help you- So I am sure they would help with bags and stairs etc. Nice wallpaper and cushions over all great style. Lovely biscuits with coffee and tea.

Review 8:The shower was variable and liable to turn freezing cold at times in the mornings.

Review 9:Fabulous views from our room. The hotel is in a very convenient position for walking into the town. The bed was very comfortable and we appreciated being invited to pick apples from the tree in the garden to take home. Looking forward to our next visit.

Review 10:Poor wi fi in room. Price is on high side. Bathroom rather dark.

Review 11:Dog friendly. Staff friendly. Excellent location if you have a dog to exercise - backs onto nice park and is ten mins from Lincoln old town/Cathedral, Castle etc.

Review 12:Room was small for a couple and only a narrow built in wardrobe to hang a few clothes up. OK for an overnight but not for a three night stay. Room was not cleaned well; had to ask for a replen of the tea/coffee etc. WiFi was hopeless in our room but worked elsewhere.

Review 13:Location and off-road parking. Views from dining room/conservatory over nearby park. Ten minute walk to Cathedral area.

Review 14:The room was very small and was missing a decently sized mirror. The room felt out dated and the windows did not fit the frames correctly. The curtain were too transparent and ineffective letting the full sun into the room at 6:30am. The ensuite bathroom has a broken toiletries shelf. The 'full' English breakfast was missing the option of beans and hash browns, and there was no vegetarian alternative. All in all it was expensive for outdated facilities.

Review 15:Staff were friendly and attentive. Free parking on the road.

Review 16:For £100 per room , this was poor value . Bed comfy but room tiny . Shower was dreadful & dirty . Staff friendly . Glass of very warm wine £5.50 . Outdoor seating pads were mouldy . It was dark and felt like an old mans hostel . Not good location

Review 17:Staff were pleasant. Garden pleasant but unable to sit out on a beautiful day because the seat pads were mouldy

Review 18:Lincoln is quite steep with hills, so the only shortcoming is that the walk from city centre to the hotel can be a bit challenging if you are tired since it is uphill returning to the hotel. But the tradeoff is the completely beautiful scenery of the hotel's grounds.

Review 19:The owner was completely gracious and delightful. My room was lovely and faced onto the arboretum.

Review 20:Very convenient location for family wedding, very welcoming and helpful, made arrangements for young child, comfortable, spacious, well equipped bedroom, brilliant breakfasts, altogether superb

Review 21:Breakfast timings, should be available past 9.30 on a Saturday ifwanting a lay in . Bathroom window needs be tinted of room 10 forprivacy reasons. Found it very hard to stay asleep after sun risebecause room became too light as curtains didn't block the light.

Review 22:The friendliness of staff and welcoming attitude. Comfy bed and likedthat there was both a shower and bath. Good sized room and telly.

Review 23:The staff are lovely, very friendly and will go over and above to help. Breakfast was delicious, location is perfect, fantastic value for money. Highly recommend!

Review 24:there was no restaurant or bar and room out the front on the roadside was quite noisy. Far better at the rear overlooking the arboretum. I wasn't aware there was wifi.....but we didn't need it anyway.

Review 25:nice front of house lady and the breakfasts were great with locally sourced produce. Property not far from Castle, Minster and Bailgate areas of town.

Review 26:Curtains hanging off the rail - broken window that did not shut in thebathroom- rickety four poster bed - stains on the carpet - empty looroll on the holder - bath not clean - no reception upon arrival, insteadhad the key thrust into my hand by a man who told me my room wasupstairs on the right and breakfast was downstairs - I asked aboutdinner - no dinner - it was Sunday at 4pm when I arrived told me I hadto go to the Cathedral area - thrust me a map in my hand - didn'tshow me where the hotel was on the map - instead walked away. Found myroom on my own - no help with my bags - no information given to me aboutwifi or how to log on just not told about the wifi at all - noinformation pack in the room - rang at 9am to see what time breakfastends as usually 10.30am to be told it ended at 9am. No offer to make itif I came down straight away - it was not busy - he just could not bebothered. Lady rang back ten minutes later offering cereal and toast -however gluten and dairy intolerant - still no apology- when I said Iwas not happy that I had not been told the times of breakfast on arrivalbecause I was being thrust a key and left to get on with it thereceptionist argued with me - still no apology - and told everyone elseknew the times - he definitely told you the times of breakfast - do notappreciate being accused of lying ! Complained at check out - stoutwoman smug face couldn't apologise did not care- I refused to paythe full amount - offered to take £5 off for missing breakfast - I onlypaid £65 - the room was worth £50 - the service and hospitality worthnothing. The worst place I have ever stayed and I work in hospitalityand stay in hotels all year every year around the world! It may be2**rated hotel which is fine but the terrible hospitality and zerocustomer service and the fact the room was unclean and falling apart andthe fact these people do not care about it makes it a place to not stay.Do not waste your money here.

Review 27:One disappointment, compared to my last stay there in 2006, was that they no longer serve dinner. The small car park is also a disadvantage but I made out OK parking on the street.

Review 28:The room was quite comfortable; the breakfast very good and the proprietress very friendly.

Review 29:Very warm welcome, very well looked after. In room 11 with wonderful view of the fab' garden and park beyond. Great breakfast with many choices. Thanks Mark & Amanda great weekend.

Review 30:reception was downstairs from entrance. Parts of the hotel were a little tired and in need of refurbishment

Review 31:breakfast in Conservatory was very pleasant with a lovely v iew.

Review 32:Times for check in/check out were difficult to fit with my plans. I paid in advance the day before leaving to have an express check out but the staff thought I no longer needed my room for the night. Times for breakfast were variable. No reception desk as you arrive. Was not shown to room so had to find it myself (up two flights of stairs). The room was as well presented as possible, but dirty and worn in places. Very little natural sunlight in the room (one small window).

Review 33:Free wifi, breakfast included, proximity to town and other amenities.

Review 34:Maybe the stairs We needed a twin room which was on the top floor

Review 35:We loved the location close to the old town centre and the wonderful outlook onto the gardens

Review 36:Only downside was no dinners available. Oh and there was limited storage (wardrobe with 2 drawers) - luckily we were only staying for a weekend.

Review 37:Hillcrest is a comfortable hotel within walking distance of the Cathedral, and is next to the arborethum (park). Plenty of parking at the weekend. We got a free upgrade to a four-poster room with a nice view of the park. Breakfast room delightful - can sit in a beautiful conservatory overlooking gardens. Staff very helpful. Problems were fixed quickly (lamp bulb and window closure)

Review 38:I was clearly being charged for a double room. The décor of the bedroom was pleasant, but quality very poor if one looked closely: dirty carpet, pillowcases too big for pillows. Bath 'room' worse: a large person would not have got into it, the wash basin was blocked and the shower screen falling to pieces. Communal areas were dusty and breakfast room upholstery fraying.

Review 39:I like the quietness of the location and the size of bedroom. The breakfast was nice, its service friendly and efficient and and the view from the breakfast room lovely.

Review 40:When we checked in we saw one member of staff for 2 minutes and passed 2 other guests in the doorway, one of which told us the owners were away. We didn't see another soul after that for the 2 days we stayed there, which was odd given it was the easter weekend. We weren't expecting breakfast but neither the restaurant or bar were open at all. They charged my credit card in advance in my absence and now I have had my statement I've noticed they did so twice. Based on the existing reviews and the guest logbook I would assume it's either changed hands or something unexpected had come up that meant they didn't meet their usual standards.

Review 41:The room was clean and seemed to be in mid refurbishment (redecorated except the carpet and beds). Good location; it was a 10 minute walk from the cathedral and castle quarters, not much further to the cultural quarter and Brayford Pool. They turned down the room and replenished the tea and biscuits. The one member of staff we saw was cheerful.

Review 42:We had expected breakfast, and was not informed by yourselves or the hotel that none was available - why we dont know. We overlooked the park and the garden and the furniture in the garden had cushions on the ground, and they were filthy. Overturned buckets and flowerpots completed the view. There were chipped saucers and no teaspoons in the room, difficult to make a morning coffee!! Also there was a broken glass light fitting in the room, and when we told the receptionist, she said she hadnt noticed it - hard to believe as it was in two pieces and was dangerous!!!!! Disappointed after reading such good reviews of this hotel.

Review 43:The hotel was well placed to see the historic heart of Lincoln, such as the castle and cathedral. Lots of places to eat in the area.

Review 44:I was visiting my daughter who was in Lincoln Hospital, this was a short 10 minute walk away which was great. The room was lovely and clean and breakfast was fantastic.

Review 45:the only issue I had was possibly the strength of the shower but this can be easily rectified by having a bath as the water runs quickly and you'll soon be clean.

Review 46:The inside of the hotel is absolutely fantastic, the rooms are amazing and spacious with adequate facilities. The WiFi is a great addition.

Review 47:Every room in the hotel is unique and beautifully decorated. The staff are very courteous and helpful. It is well located above the wonderful arboretum and within easy access of the sights in Lincoln.

Review 48:Parking on site is tricky but this is balanced by plenty of parking in the street. However, we noticed how helpful the owner was in securing a vacant parking space on site for a couple who had physical difficulties, which summed up how welcoming the owners were to their hotel.

Review 49:Location - very central for the city / Christmas market / cathedral

Review 50:Room was very cold but was promptly sorted out. Breakfast was nice but small portion for a full English. We asked for very strong coffee and were given a cafetiere of insipid coffee - not nice at all.

Review 51:We liked the hotel architecture and location. Room very nice and with character. Staff very helpful.

Review 52:No bar

Review 53:Lovely clean hotel. Unfortunately bar was closed due to only being 4 guests but we we're provided with a bottle of wine in the room. Lovely breakfast

Review 54:the only slight hic up was the shower head that would not stay securely in place when taking a shower, as a tall man it made it a little awkward to properly shower.

Review 55:The hotel was a beautiful building with lots of character and wonderful interior design. Very friendly staff and was room was clean, spacious and very well presented. A 5 minute walk down hill into town and very easy to find.

Review 56:No dislikes

Review 57:very comfortable and clean, walking distance to cathedral and shops, nice breakfast very well organised service. Nice welcome and very friendly family run establishment.

Review 58:Too small tea cups in the room.

Review 59:Lovely bedroom with spectacular views. Good to have a bath. Very good breakfast. Excellent position for dog walking next to the Arboretum. Off road parking. Just a short walk to the Cathedral.

Review 60:Lovely little hotel, excellent location very close walk to town and the catherdral much closer than thought when booking, quiet location with plently of off road parking however we were able to park in the car park of the hotel. Comfey beds and overall very nice for what we paid.

Review 61:In the room (311) we needed a small table to make drinks on? Same applies to bathroom i.e. there was nowhere to put our toiletries!

Review 62:breakfast great, Owner very friendly. Shower in room wonderful.

Review 63:Hotel was a warren of doors and staircases, not a lot owners can do about that its an old building Some of the corridors and other public spaces were a bit drab

Review 64:Lovely view from room Great breakfast room Perfect location near park and historic centre Nice big beds Well decorated, tidy rooms

Review 65:I didn't not like anything at this hotel. I would have preferred a bigger mug for drinks in the room, that's all!

Review 66:Only 10 minutes walk from Lincoln Cathedral. Lovely room and décor. Plenty of towels, lovely shower. Good choice of tea, coffee and biscuits. Helpful advice from staff. Able to have breakfast a little early due to an early start to the day. Free parking on site and on the road. Peaceful location.

Review 67:Lack of staff Breakfast was not available until 8.30am and we had an early morning departure at 8am, so we missed our breakfast completely. The door to the reception and breakfast room was locked with nobody around. We literally saw the receptionist for 5 minutes to give us our key and after that we never saw anyone again during our stay. It would have been nice to have had a room with a view, as indicated on the hotel description but instead we had a side view with no view at all. Our bed was quite small and only had one set of bedside drawers. Overall, it was OK for our needs but didn't really add to our wonderful experience of Lincoln!

Review 68:Location

Review 69:Duvet too hot - no alternative bedding Toilet extractor fan U/S No breakfast available till 8:30 a.m. No staff presence unless you talk to them on the front door entry speaker.

Review 70:Comfortable bed TV working OK

Review 71:The location is perfect for Cathedral, castle and shops, although the main drag is called Steep Hill for a reason. The fact we got a taxi back from the marina is a function of topography, not the hotel. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Definitely going back.

Review 72:We were in room 5. The intruding noise and light reflection on the ceiling from adjoining room 4's en-suite during the night ruined our 2nd nights sleep. No light weight duvets available.

Review 73:Breakfasts and location for the city

Review 74:dirty headboard dirty shower lots of stairs (would ask for a room on lower floor)

Review 75:Location,breakfast,comfortable bed, lots of information on attractions in area if new to Lincoln. staff helpful when asked for help

Review 76:The wi-fi was a bit hit-and-miss, but it wasn't a big deal.

Review 77:The room was lovely, with a very comfortable bed, and a sofa too. The breakfast was delicious - fresh pineapple, mango, melon and strawberries followed by a piping hot full english. The service was spot-on. Even though our room was next to the front door, we were not disturbed by other guests.

Review 78:The room was a good size with a terrific view. The bed was comfortable and ensured a good nights sleep. Breakfast was good and the staff were friendly. Absolutely amazed that it is only a two star hotel. The location was in easy walking distance of the castle, cathedral, centre and other attractions. I would certainly highly recommend this hotel. If we return to Lincoln we would pick The Hillcrest again.

Review 79:Not the most modern or spacious bedroom (the tiny dressing table is impractical if more than one person is moving about), and the location entails a stiff uphill walk to reach the cathedral and castle. Maybe I was just hungry the night I arrived; it was much more pleasant in daylight.

Review 80:My ground-floor room was comfortable,, with a view over the hotel's garden and the Arboretum that made it bright with afternoon light. Good breakfast in the morning with caring, friendly service.

Review 81:Room 2 was on the small side. Although it had a double bed and facilities for two the cupboard/wardrobe would be a challenge for more than a day or so. Ditto if you had a suitcase on the larger than "carry on" size.

Review 82:Virtually on the level to the Cathederal and Castle with parking. Lovely breakfast/bar area overlooking nice garden.

Review 83:Hotel excellent, Room excellent, Food excellent what more can i say. The owners are truly proffessional in all aspects of running this hotel. Will certainly return.

Review 84:The shower wasn't much. Like drizzle.

Review 85:The breakfast room was great with a beautiful view to the garden and the park. The breakfast was really good. The hosts were always smiling and very helpful. The room was just big enough with tea and coffee facilities. Only ten minutes walk to the Cathedral and the old City.

Review 86:Having to press an intercom to be let in to register. No breakfast until 7.30, even though I needed to be at work by 8 and no porridge available! First time anywhere in the UK.

Review 87:Too many steps, if you have any sort of problem with walking, you will struggle here. We went up several flights to get to bed and even more to reach the dining room in the basement summer lounge room. Beds could do with a mattress topper, and pillows were a bit hard.

Review 88:Décor was excellent, food ok, the place is a bit quirky, which was fine. It is nice and quiet, although we arrived late on Sat and left early on Sunday. It might be different during a working week.

Review 89:Could hear the noise from next room when they used the bathroom.

Review 90:The room I was given was spacious, overlooking the garden. Comfortable clean bed. Tea/coffee making facility. Good WiFi. Friendly owner. Lovely garden. Good cooked breakfast. A very comfortable stay.

Review 91:The stairs with the bar and breakfast being on the lower ground floor and the room being on the top floor. Also the bar shutting at 9PM!

Review 92:Bed was comfortable, the room was clean and the breakfast was great

Review 93:Went down to the bar just after 9 which was closed.

Review 94:We was made welcome as soon as we arrived and the excellent service carried on till we left the following day.

Review 95:Lovely little hotel. Friendly people.Excellent breakfast with perfect poached eggs. Nicely decorated, bathroom good shower. Plenty of mirrors and power points. Free WiFi.

Review 96:Nothing that we didn't like

Review 97:Everything about the hotel we liked, the room was modern and clean, the staff where so friendly and welcoming. We also loved the fact that the hotel had so much history and character.

Review 98:Absence of drawers for small clothing items Provision of a second bath towel for 2 person occupation would have been helpful

Review 99:Quiet location Close to Castle and Cathedral Attentive and helpful staff Comfortable bed

Review 100:Bathroom was small and pokey with plumbing issues; bedroom was reasonable size and acceptable comfort, but only one chair to sit on; lighting level low for reading.

Review 101:Breakfast; staff; bar.

Review 102:No negatives.

Review 103:Welcoming staff who made sure that everything possible was done to make my visit enjoyable and trouble free. Excellent breakfast. Lovely views from the conservatory.

Review 104:Very nice place pleasant staff which left us alone nice spacious room.would definitely go back.thankyou to the hillcrest

Review 105:Bed was a bit too soft.

Review 106:Location - close to city centre

Review 107:Friendly, helpful and attentive staff. Nice room.

Review 108:no restaurant ,

Review 109:The staff, the location.

Review 110:Good location, great breakfast and the owners very welcoming and helpful.

Review 111:Small rooms

Review 112:It's locality and breakfasts were great

Review 113:The friendliness of the owners. Nothing was too much trouble to make our stay enjoyable.

Review 114:The bed was very comfortable had a great sleep

Review 115:English breakfast quite scant

Review 116:Location and views

Review 117:Room needed a little TLC but very minor.

Review 118:Great location and very friendly owners. Breakfast was very nice.
