Reviews for Hotel Okura Tokyo
Review 1:The location was horrible, not near... Anything. They were also doingconstruction on one part of the hotel which would cause taxis to goaround and in turn increased our fare. The staff was blunt and notvery kind.
Review 2:I love that there was a Chinsen ( Chinese Iron Chef) restaurant justupstairs from my room. I loved that I could walk across the street to a24 hours 7/11.
Review 3:There were some air-conditioning issues in the room that were not resolved.
Review 4:Great location, excellent service, staff very polite and generally a "Japanese" style 5 star hotel with some excellent restaurants. The concierge was very helpful and everyone spoke English.
Review 5:The hotel (South wing) is at some distance from the underground. the breakfast selection could be bigger. I had to ask for an iron as it was not in the room. There were problems with WiFi connection during my stay and I was not able to connect my IPhone during 2 days. There was not cash machine in The hotel. The fitness, spa and swimming pool you have to pay additionally. I usually stay at ANA and hearing about Okura I expect it will be better than ANA but it was not maybe because of the renovation of the main building.
Review 6:The staff was very friendly and my room was quiet ;-)
Review 7:The decor is a little bit too retro, including the room decor, but that is part of the appeal, you expect Don Draper to pull up a bar stool next to you.
Review 8:What a great hotel. Admittedly the decor is just on the border of retro and dated but the staff and service where excellent, very courteous and helpful. I don't believe there is a spot of dust in the building. Surprisingly good value also.
Review 9:Quiet business area, more suitable for business trips rather than holiday
Review 10:Super friendly staff. Informative and helpful concierge. Clean spacious rooms. Clean bathrooms.
Review 11:Considering the quality of room and facilities provided within the room, the tariff is far too high. I felt cheated considering that I had done booking in advance with a locked price and thereafter paid a different amount at check out time.
Review 12:The staff was very well informed and advised on various queries very supportively Breakfast was indeed a delight with high quality dishes
Review 13:The room looks tired, owing to age, and therefore needs renovating. The museum and garden, which I looked forward to visiting, were closed. So were a number of hotel restaurants.
Review 14:Relatively spacious room compared to most hotels in Tokyo. But if I were to book again in the Roppongi/Akasaka area, I will return to the ANA Intercontinental for better value for money and updated rooms. Courteous maid service. Friendly staff on the Front Desk. The airport limousine bus stops at this hotel; therefore, convenient for a tourist. Truly enjoyed the art exhibit entitled "Feast of Beauty" that the Okura hosted August 3-20, 2015.
Review 15:Nothing. Everything was smooth and flawless from our arrival to departure.
Review 16:This famed 1962 building of Okura came to an end--it is being demolished now. We felt fortunate to stay at the hotel on its last night of this fabulous Chukichi Taniguchi architecture.
Review 17:Nothing
Review 18:The service was impeccable from the moment we arrived. Greeted at our cab, bags carried in, we were entertained as they processed out check-in information, escorted to our room where our bags were waiting, etc. Service is on another planet! Plus the hotel is beautiful.
Review 19:The portion of the pancakes were too small and overpriced.
Review 20:We loved the famously beautiful lobby, garden, decoration and old world ambiance. We were given our requests with no hassles.
Review 21:No place to take a client for coffee at 1030am as Cafe Terrasse was waiting lines for a table and Orchid Room was closed at 10am. The Lobby lounge area would be a good venue for coffee service.
Review 22:The amenities in the bathroom (hairbrush and comb, hair elastic, good quality soap), the robes in the room, excellent service everywhere especially bell desk and concierge.
Review 23:27 degrees celcius and sunshine, outdoor pool is closed (it's June!) Every restaurant is extremely expensive, even your simple buffet style breakfast costs a staggering 30 euro's per person
Review 24:The Japanese 1950's style Nice room with lot's of caracter Helpfull staff
Review 25:The metro station is not close to the hotel, sometimes it would be easy to get lost after exiting the metro station.
Review 26:The hotel is beautiful, great location for shopping and traveling. The metro stations are within 10 minutes walk. All staffs can speak fluent English without Japanese accent which made foreigners easier to stay. A heavenly stay in Okura.
Review 27:"pride of the Okura" breakfast buffet was disappointing. Not worth the money. Location is okay but not the best.
Review 28:Generously sized room, great staff, great free wifi.
Review 29:Comfortable rooms, beds, baths, superb staff service, great food, in an architecturally sublime building. The essence of mid century Japanese design. Elegance and simplicity. Go before they change the place...
Review 30:Being an oasis of pleasure meant it could be a challenge to leave, unless traveling by taxi or happy to walk for a decent distance. Don't expect to pop out for a quick dinner.
Review 31:Everyone was helpful and considerate, and the shear number of options available within the hotel was crazy. You'd be tempted not to leave! It was an Island of luxury.
Review 32:breakfast area too small for the size of the hotel, expect delays on week-end.
Review 33:excellent location, medium size with personal attention. traditional though comfortable.
Review 34:We heard that they are planning to redevelop, may we suggest giving the American Embassy a wide berth. Fearsome-looking armed men and senior citizen guests are not altogether conducive. From our room at the South Wing to the main lobby entrance can take some walking, though good exercise, and careful navigation.
Review 35:Very helpful and friendly staff, all of them. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and were initially taken aback by large contingent of armed men around the American Embassy. Once we got our bearings and avoided them; and at slight inconvenience we found excellent eating places within walking distance and very handy train stations.
Review 36:Pool and spa are superb. Laundry services are terrific. Room was incredibly clean and comfortable. I stayed in several different hotels in Japan this trip, this was by far the best. And ironically, the least expensive.
Review 37:Staff at the concierge were very efficient and friendly. Staff at the Terrace and Orchid room were great but the staff at Carmelita corner could be better. Overall I am sad to see the main wing facade change as this hotel is the only hotel I would stay in my 30 years of travel to Japan,
Review 38:There isn't a comfortable spot to sit with colleagues and do work. The bar is smokey. The restaurants are expensive and old fashioned. The neighborhood is quiet, too quiet. Very few cafes, shops and restaurants. A medium length walk to a few metro stops, though. But with my jetlag, I wanted to walk to a cafe early in the morning.
Review 39:The staff and service was always available with politeness and friendliness. No tipping in Japan, so it was extra special to receive help with everything. The rooms have nice robes, wonderful beds, nice tea.
Review 40:Metro stations a little far away but still within easy walking distance. Not much choice of places to eat near the hotel.
Review 41:Very quiet and a very comfortable bed. The staff spoke good English and were very helpful.
Review 42:This is a old hotel with 60's decor (I personally found parts of the hotel very retro cool) it has been maintained to a very high standard but, it just felt a bit drab and old and they are living on their reputation (good news they are re-furbing next year though!) Wireless was poor in room. Everything seemed to be a priced extra on top of the quite expensive room rate, the breakfast price put us off a even trying and we ate out.
Review 43:Great central location for tourist spots and access to metro system. Excellent customer service and great spa facility.
Review 44:The hotel will be renovated, the rooms are indeed outdated if you compare these rooms with other top hotels, but everything was functioning very well, free WIFI is excellent!
Review 45:In fact everything!! Staff, travel agent, service, sauna, restaurants kindness of people...
Review 46:The only thing I wish was a bit clearer on their website was that the gardens they have are only accessible (or view-able?) from either the Terrace Restaurant or the Japanese Tea Room. We had hoped it would be possible to stroll through the gardens in the morning before we checked out and were a bit disappointed when we realized it would not be possible.
Review 47:This hotel is far outside of our normal range of places we stay, so we were a bit overwhelmed at first with the high quality of simply everything. The staff was friendly and polite, and nearly everyone we came across spoke enough English to communicate easily. If there was ever a time they did not know the answer to your question, they would quickly find the answer. The room was huge by Japan standards, even by American standards I would imagine. There were comfortable yukata available to slip into, as well as a charming explanation for the origami left on our bed. The food and service at all of the hotel's cafes, bars, and restaurants we went to were excellent. We also really appreciated the TV having multiple channels in several different languages available for free.
Review 48:i am sorry to learn that the main wing is going....i hope that its spirit will be maintained
Review 49:never other than instantly helpful and insightful; never obtrusive.
Review 50:Tv had only japanese channels. hotel is old and its not in a 5* level. we couldnt use gym and swiming pool as have to pay separate to use. to have breakfast we needed to pay 3000+ yen per person. it wasnt as high standard as they charged. They charged us half a day for 3 hours late check out.
Review 51:comfortable bed.wifi. close to metro station.
Review 52:a bit far from metro station.
Review 53:combined traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern comfort. The lobby is so classy. We arrived at the cherry blossom season. The whole lobby and corridors are decorated with flowers. The two restaurents are also worth a try. Good value for money.
Review 54:Surprisingly peaceful, attractive location, many lovely areas to walk to but also close to Metro line. Loved the 70s style of the hotel - quite unique. Such a shame it's going to be re-developed.
Review 55:The showers are not walk-in, but a bath tube with shower curtains that keep getting in the way. The internet was slow and you have to login often.
Review 56:I stayed at Okura Hotel during my stay in Tokyo. The staff were friendly. It is a very big and old fashioned style hotel. It isn't a fully modernized hotel like others, but it gives you the feeling of class. It isn't a party hotel, but they do host a lot of events. The rooms are comfortable. If the room gets stuffy, the windows can be opened if you call room service. Okura Hotel is literally in the center to most outer destinations.
Review 57:We did not have a "bad experience" at all, but it can be worth mentioning that there is very little to see in the area around the hotel. However, it's about a 10 minute walk to the closest station on the Ginza line which will quickly take you to Shibya.
Review 58:The service of the staff at hotel Okura is just excellent! For being a japanese hotel, the rooms are spacious and have all the amenities you need, plus services like laundry and 24/7 room service.
Review 59:Not that convinient if you want to take the public transportation i.e. metro etc.
Review 60:The Understated luxury that other so called "luxury" hotels can't replicate...nor understand!
Review 61:We stayed for three nights for a quite high price per night (250€). We knew that breakfast would not be included but we were disappointed that the swimmingool was not included because we bookedvia booking.com European five or four star hotels that we have visited woukd not request an extra charge for the swimmingpool. Normally one can use all facilities of the hotel.
Review 62:The staff was very friendly and helpful, in particular the concierge.
Review 63:Way, way more than the 2 or 3 sentences they suggest for this comment.
Review 64:The restaurants in the hotel are very, very good. They have a TV channel called jet lag that is awesome. The room was huge. All the lights and appliances worked.
Review 65:The hotel is located in the business area from which traveling to the mrt or taxi is required. 10 till 15 minutes walk to the mrt.
Review 66:The room was spacious and hotel has a lot of facility.
Review 67:If the one thing that I have to complain is the small restaurant ( not in the summer I guess as its too cold to have your breakfast outside in winter) that had me lining up for my breakfast...
Review 68:Staff are friendly, courteous and helpful. Facilities are in perfect condition.
Review 69:Toilet and lavatory were never cleaned properly despite my asking them to do so. Water wouldn't slide down the porcelain sides; it would adhere in drops, showing that it had a grimy slick lining the sides. Quite disgusting.
Review 70:Service and attention to detail in general.
Review 71:The room in the South Wing had old decor. The room in the main building was nicer, but small. For the amount we were paying, we expected better. The service was okay. The lobby is large and it wasn't sufficiently clear where we had to go or who we could approach for assistance.
Review 72:Location is convenient. Near a subway and two 7 Elevens. Not quite close enough to any main points of attraction though (Roppongi district is a good 2 kms away).
Review 73:The distance between the main building and the annex was a long walk and could be accessed only from the basement floor. It was lonely to walk at night hours.
Review 74:The food served in the restaurants were all costly, but worth the value.
Review 75:All lights in room controlled by switch near door. Late night bathroom trips in complete darkness
Review 76:Staff friendly and helpful. Large room. Decent location, medium walk to Metro stations
Review 77:I usually pick much smaller hotels, the Okura is big and a bit impersonal. Very beige. Breakfast too expensive.
Review 78:Great welcome. Comfortable room, good shower, excellent bathroom amenities, shaving/make up mirror (very rare), close to Metro and to Ana Intercontinental limousine bus stop. Wifi worked very well.
Review 79:I guess if I could, I'd make the place a little less brown! The rooms, lift, lobby, bar were all shades of brown, fawn and beige! But that's minor.
Review 80:It was very well run and highly atmospheric (for a Westerner on a first trip to Tokyo) as well beautiful to look at and look out from. The staff were fantastically helpful but that was true of just about everywhere in Japan.
Review 81:Its too bad the group that owns this masterpiece of Japanese modernism is tearing it down to replace it with a flavorless glass tower. Enjoy it while you can!
Review 82:It's like coming home! The lobby is an elegant, warm space that makes you want to stay there all day long. You can't beat the Okura for the quality of service!
Review 83:The fact that the Okura Group plans to demolish the main building, containing the stunning lobby, in mid-2015. They should demolish the South Wing instead and preserve the main building and its extraordinary lobby as a historic landmark
Review 84:The Okura is one of the loveliest hotels in the world. Its main lobby is an architectural treasure, with a beautifully and distinctively Japanese sense of calm. The staff and service are simply wonderful too.
Review 85:Some people think the hotel looks dated, but it is a time capsule of design from that time. That is what is beautiful.
Review 86:It's a beautiful hotel - well designed and a good value.
Review 87:It needs a little refurbishment, not ncessarily modernization, just refurbishment. Access to subway not clear / easy. Poor access to electronics shopping.
Review 88:Very classic building and hotel. Staff try very hard and are very good. Location is wonderful for most purposes.
Review 89:Queuing for breakfast for 25 mins mixed with people from outside the hotel is a management mistake. I pay 10 times more than them and expect to eat bkfst as a first priority. Every single guest was surprised they have to wait.
Review 90:This is true heritage of Tokyo. Legend. That's why you shouldn't expect Peninsula like style. It's unique. Everything was so perfect, except breakfast.
Review 91:Extra charge to the pool for guests. First we got a stinking smoking room, even if we asked for non-smoking rooms when booking. Luckily they found a new room after 5 hours.
Review 92:Breakfast was very good. Clean and nice rooms. Excellent staff.
Review 93:Relatively expensive compared to other 5 star hotels, considering there any many more up to date hotels in Tokyo (even in the same area). Very business oriented hotel, suits only.
Review 94:Feels like you're in Mad Men season 8 - The Tokyo office. Style is so old that's it trendy again :-)
Review 95:The mid century decor was like being in a Madmen time capsule. The rooms were huuuuge and the staff were impeccable. Thank you Okura. I hope I can stay again someday x
Review 96:Please give guests the cards with hotel name for taxis on arrival - didn't know hotel had then until the last day.
Review 97:Gorgeous hotel with glamorous 60s style, wonderfully helpful staff. Loved the room, linen, bed. Would come again without doubt.
Review 98:Impeccable service in a very traditional Japanese style. We liked :Location - off the beaten track but within walking distance of all main Nikko attractions. Rooms and Dining :Very traditional Japanese style. Service : Very gracious and attentive to detail. Highly Recommended.
Review 99:The subway station is actually about 15-20 mins away if you walk at a leisurely pace. The hotel entrance on either side is at an uphill slope.
Review 100:The park and museum opposite the hotel; rooms are quite spacious and beds are comfortable. Staff was helpful and responsive to my needs.
Review 101:We took the Metro, and had a job to locate the Okura. Being, momentarily uncertain of our position, is disconcerting in Tokyo.
Review 102:We loved the uniforms of the staff, where else could you find a pretty bell-hop, with pill box hat, assistants in kimono, clerks wearing neckerchiefs, all of them kindly and efficient?
Review 103:The beautiful foyer/lobby is only used for waiting around in + could be turned into a fabulous drinks lounge...much nicer than the actual bar whichi is dark , smoky + not nearly as well designed.
Review 104:the pristine 60s feel of this spacious hotel + extermeley helpful staff
Review 105:Fitness centre is chargeable. Room is very Japanese-style and the bathroom is very small. Not suitable for bigger built European. All the tv channels are in Japanese and no English channels at all!
Review 106:Room is Japanese style. Very old fashion.
Review 107:Unless you have the time and enjoy the hike, a taxi is mandatory to get to and from this hotel from or to just about anywhere else.
Review 108:Mad Men meets Lost in Translation.
Review 109:Free WiFi in the lobby with good signal, but no personal computer at south wing’s lobby, nevertheless you can find one in main build. So I don't think this is a real problem.
Review 110:No noise from the passing cars on the road or any disturbing thing at all,the location, foods and service is among the best. Very convenient to stay,it gives me good sleeping quality. First choice for holding business meeting, honeymoon and perfect for shopping. The price is above average level of top class hotel for travelers, but definetly worth it. It’s prestige and standard is quite comparable to Grand hotel Esplanade of Berlin. Highly recommend!
Review 111:The décor seemed dated and dark - not many shops and restaurants within walking distance and there was not info in the rooms about where the fitness centre and pool was - I had to go searching
Review 112:Staff were really friendly and helpful and the room was clean
Review 113:The location was too far from a station There was nothing much to see or do in the area The added charge for using the pool (AUD$22) for paying guests felt like a rip off
Review 114:The staff The comfortable bed The cleanliness
Review 115:Expensive restaurants In most hotels in Touristic countries include breakfast in their reservation without asking; but this was not the case for this hotel.
Review 116:It's a traditional japanese hotel, with very clean and well designed space, very nice and cooperative staff and multiple nice restaurants with different styles of food. It's near 2 subway stations that allows access to trains to almost everywhere in Tokyo. It's also near the Tokyo tower and the Meiji shrine. But this hotel is not a good choice to those with restricted budgets, it's quite expensive specially if you decide to have all meals at the hotel.
Review 117:Overall, we were happy with our experience. The price I thought I was paying online was 20% higher when I arrived. I feel that the use of the pool and gym should not be additional fee. I felt that the concierge service was not consistent. I was given incorrect information and ended up having to take an additional taxi ride.
Review 118:The room was very comfortable and nice apportioned. At the two restaurants in the hotel which we went to, we had very nice meals and great service. I enjoyed the ikebana, pool, choice shopping as well as the furniture & decoration in the hotel. I liked that we did not have to wait for taxi. For a large hotel, our wing had a smaller hotel feel.
Review 119:A bit far from Tokyo Station. We had to take a cab due to the amount and size of luggage.
Review 120:The neighborhood is great. Family restaurants and coffee shops, Starbucks, within a five minute walk.
Review 121:The hotel is not too crowded. The room as quite spacious. The staff were very helpful. There are also always taxi in the front of the hotel. The garden in the picture might not be as big as u think. Though there are a tiny park adjacent to the hotel where u can take around 5-10 minutes walk. The decoration is very old and traditional, but not dated or dirty.
Review 122:Room felt old A bit of a long walk to the nearest train station
Review 123:Great Staff Good location - very close to my business meeting Easy Access from Airport - BUS Quiet
Review 124:Facilities are old, but tidy and clean.
Review 125:Really warm hearted and helpful staff; clean and pleasant hotel facilities and environment. Although the location is not at business or entertainment centre, it's within 30 min walking distance from the Royal Palace. For people who like jogging, it will be a good place to stay. There is a garden and museum besides the hotel building.
Review 126:when i was checking out.. woman name ms.shimoda.. and her boss (male) told me .they need my credit card already signed,,, as they asked me if i have printed info from booking .com on me. i said no. i can go to business ofiice and print it out for you.// i asked why she needs me to already sign the bill..to my increadablly shocking honest, yet totally unprofessional rude and unuttaly humiliating answer... she said sometimes, people do not comeback. i was so humiliated, suddenly,, that i told them i need thier name, and i will notify the hotel manager about this incident. and i did. ! by mail. while i was wirteing the letter... i end up requesting refund.. because i was so upset and my trip was totally ruined by that disrespect,at the place where i was to be away from that kind of attitude, for the price we are willing to pay and behaving accordingly. they have no response yet, via letter nor phone call, which i wil not accept, i am about write them and request refund for ruining my trip and ...actually has been beyond words,,, that damaged my joyful life.in small but deep scar of horrible memory.shock! i am not saying this ,because i want money back,, but i feel i do not have to pay for that bad moment that stays in me still... and will.. and i did write to them i wil never go back to that hotekl( i lived in that hotel 6 months back in 1996...writing 3 books,,published in jajpan)....my stay were payed by 3 different publisher. please request my payment refunded. thank yoyu i did wirte both clarkes name in the letter.. also i did aske them to confirm the incident with them, as i told both of them,, that is what im going to do and to my question fo you know why i m so upset now?? and they both did agree.
Review 127:i used to live there for 6 months to write 3 books.back in 1996.. and i have such a great memory.
Review 128:Two wings, very far apart, separated by a long tunnel.
Review 129:After 14 days in Japan staying in a variety of hotels, the service and friendliness of this staff was tops. Very convenient to two different metro lines. Made it easier to get about on our own.
Review 130:Gym etc had to be paid extra
Review 131:Staff and service
Review 132:breakfast choice limited for long stays fitness room too small and too expensive
Review 133:A wonderful hotel with polite and very helpful staff in a great location. What's not to love.
Review 134:Extra fee (2100 yen per day) for pool/sauna/gym use.
Review 135:The friendliness, helpfulness and caring as shown by all the staff.
Review 136:Breakfast and use of facilities are extras you have to pay for
Review 137:Very nice hotel in good location
Review 138:Breakfast wait too long. No Bar facilities that did not have to be pre-reserved, quite ridiculous!
