Reviews for Swarthmoor Hall

Review 1:Friendly staff, clean and well thought out rooms. From the outside it looks old (because it is) but inside its clean, modern but with a traditional feel. Would recommend staying here

Review 2:Not being able to find reception in the dark. More information about the breakfast offer may have tempted us to add breakfast to our stay.

Review 3:Nice modern and clean rooms in peaceful surroundings

Review 4:There isn't a TV in the room, which I love. May not be what others want.

Review 5:I love the peace and quiet, I have stayed several times. Very clean, restful. Staff helpful - staff are volunteers so not staffed 24 hours

Review 6:The double room was very comfortable, the whole environment is quiet and peaceful. The addition of the cafe is brilliant, lovely food. I also had the option of using the kitchen for snacks. Staff are very friendly. Can't wait to go back.

Review 7:Nothing

Review 8:Amazing old hall in the middle of the countryside, full of elizabethan ambience. Stayed in cottages - very clean and comfortable with everything you need. Cafe on site, helpful staff, nice grounds.

Review 9:No TV's in the bedrooms, but as I was only staying for one night it was not a problem for me. There is a communal lounge with a small TV, but if you were staying a week you might want to be able to relax and watch TV in your room, which you could not do here.

Review 10:The hall is located a short distance outside of the village, but it is easy to walk into the centre both via a path and via the road, taking about 15 minutes either way. The hall has been nicely decorated and the Fixtures and fittings are of a high standard. The continental breakfast is self service and quite wholesomely orientated, which was not a problem for me, but parents might struggle to find something their kids would eat.

Review 11:No toiletries in bathroom, only a hand-wash bottle. Flickering ceiling light. Would have liked option for catered breakfast in the morning.

Review 12:Good quality bedroom furnishings & fittings. Quite and tranquil property.

Review 13:Very clean, comfortable and well appointed and in a great location. The communal kitchen and sitting room give flexibility to eat out or cook your own food and provide some extra space.

Review 14:I have no negatives.

Review 15:Stayed due to working in barrow in Furness, was very happy with facilities in our accommodation. Staff we very welcoming and helpful, good location plenty of parking and free WiFi all at a great price. Will be back again next week.

Review 16:The door to our room wouldn't lock, wasted a good 30 mins getting that sorted. The lock on the door should have been fixed before we checked in. The hotel does not provide toiletries in the room, as a result had to go without a shower as it was too late and the shops were shut. If only this was mentioned on the website.

Review 17:Beautiful location cut off from the hustle bustle. Nice & clean room. Lovely decor on keeping with the natural surroundings.

Review 18:nothing

Review 19:booked this hotel for my wife who was participating in the ladies of the lakes cycle sportif. she could not praise the staff and hotel highly enough particularly praising the friendliness, tranquillity and simple classic style of her room. i did not give top marks for vfm as there was no single rooms available and she was travelling alone but it would have been excellent vfm if travelling as a couple.

Review 20:The fact that I was totally alone in the building for one night, with no-one on site. No hairdryer. Minimal toiletries. 'Not a hotel' but at hotel prices.........

Review 21:Rooms refurbished to a high standard. Beautiful gardens Historic building

Review 22:Lodging accommodation was given as 16th century Hall but was in fact a modern barn conversion. Had a fellow guest who made it unpleasant for other guests by walking around in underpants and messing up bathroom (flooding)

Review 23:Really not suitable for a Business traveller. No one on site after 5.00pm, no Wifi at all (although they have a story about that) no TV in the room (!) and no other facilities whatsoever, in an area miles from anywhere. Breakfast is a do it yourself with a bread roll and packets of cereal. I am not sure what the owners are trying to market here as its more like backpackers accommodation than a Hotel

Review 24:Rooms were freshly decorated and spotless

Review 25:There is WiFi only in the conference room which is locked. There is no other WiFi at the hotel. This can be improved.

Review 26:The location is wonderful, cleanliness is great. Staff is helpful.

Review 27:Did not clean the room or change bedding/towels during our 5 day stay, when asked about this said this was normal as they did not provide an hotel service. A couple of days did not replenish the milk & sugar for tea/coffee.

Review 28:Room was cosy and facilities were ample

Review 29:Very quaint and charming. Pretty country surroundings and nice garden areas. Short walk into town was very nice along path. Nothing can beat sitting next to gardens in the sun! Staff very accommodating to our early arrival after long overseas flight. Would highly recommend!!

Review 30:Beautifully appointed rom and shower. Spotlessly clean. No breakfast provided but a spotless and well appoiinted kitchen to cook your own brealfast(and any other meal). Comfortable lounge.

Review 31:Lovely ,well kept building. Great location to get to some fabulous places, with a variety of activities/adventures.Enjoyed the calm atmosphere and nice staff.

Review 32:Not having an iron in room and voile curtains on light nights

Review 33:Superb Staff, good clean rooms, beautiful gardens & a nice walk to Ulverston. Good value for money.

Review 34:Only one small thing that I meant to mention. When I opened the shower door from the inside I hurt my fingers because they hit against the frame as the handle is too close to the opening frame.

Review 35:The room was spotlessly clean and fresh. Quality teas were left out on a hospitality tray. The peaceful, historic, setting, with a beautiful garden, was very relaxing. All staff were very helpful and friendly.

Review 36:I loved it - others may not like lack of TV / radio in rooms

Review 37:Peace, quiet, calm, a kitchen I could heat up soup in in the evening / cook eggs in the am (breakfast is available and is DIY). I enjoyed the break from TV / radio

Review 38:Nothing.

Review 39:I was contacted before arriving for ETA to ensure someone was there to greet us. The service and friendly staff who showed us around was lovely. The room was modern, clean, very comfortable and quiet.

Review 40:Not one thing!

Review 41:The whole experience - the staff were friendly, the room had recently been refurbished to a really high standard & was fantastic value for money. The atmosphere was quiet, relaxed & the Hall oozed with history. The location was ideal, just a gentle 10 minute stroll away from Ulverston, which in itself is a lovely, little town.

Review 42:Swarthmoor Hall is a historic meeting place for the Quaker community which has more recently commercialized itself by providing accommodation to the wider public. The room we stayed in was recently refurbished to a high standard. We opted to self-cater breakfast and had use of a shared kitchen and lounge. However, we didn't see any other guests. The setting was tranquil and the spec of the rooms far exceeded my expectations, especially considering the price. I would definitely recommend and would stay again.

Review 43:We travelled with our families and took 2 rooms, one double room and other was junior suite(higher charges). Junior suite was having nothing extra from Double room. Junior suite was suggested for 2 adult and 1 child but there was nothing like that. there was no sspace for extra bed and nobody was there to ask for. The WIFI was not working whole time and after asking got to know it's not working. It wasn't a pleasant stay at all

Review 44:Location was good, hotel was huge.

Review 45:Wifi is a problem, but they are working to remedy the situation.

Review 46:The staff embody hospitality and were accommodating in every way. The countryside is simply beautiful.

Review 47:Peaceful surroundings, super nice staff, and a lot of history related to the English Civil War and the early Quakers. My simple room had leaded windows and wooden shutters.

Review 48:The heating went off during the night which was a bit cold

Review 49:There were plenty of tea and coffee facilities and self catering for cooking. Excellent location and very private

Review 50:Couldn't get any signal from the wifi but only a minor inconvenience.

Review 51:So peaceful and serene and received the warmest of welcomes. Beautiful area and lovely sized room.

Review 52:I felt that a TV in the bedroom opposite the windows and chairs would be an advantage so that weather and news can be watched.

Review 53:It was out of the city in a countryside setting so no noise. It had everything one could wish for including a mini kitchen so you can self cater. We stayed in unit 18, there are others including a junior suite.

Review 54:What was not to like!?

Review 55:I was met by a very nice volunteer, I arrived late and he stayed late to wait for me to turn up and was very efficient and smiled despite probably really wanting to be at home!! Very efficient and spent time showing me everything

Review 56:booked breakfast as well, didn't realise it was cook it yourself, and thought the cost of breakfast was too much for what it was

Review 57:the setting, and the room price

Review 58:The peace and quiet, tranquility, the lovely garden and woodland, the excellent self catering facilities, the friendliness and helpfulness of staff. The information pack in the room was excellent. Many lovely places to visit nearby. Excellent value for money.

Review 59:Beautiful surroundings, and I loved the laid back nature of the stay. We were very much left to our own devices, there was an element of trust which was refreshing. Very friendly and helpful staff. Fully equipped kitchen, with lots of tea and filter coffee and such like. Lovely 10 min walk in to the village through fields. I would definitely stay there again.

Review 60:Not a B&B, a hostel Booking.com didn't tell me about the history

Review 61:Historic Beautiful Manor House Excellent value Lovely location Found out new things

Review 62:units were very clean, tea and coffee provided (donations) in communal kitchen, comfortable lounge with tv available. Extra blankets provided. Friendly and helpful staff.

Review 63:Beautiful historic house in beautiful grounds. Peaceful environment. Staff went out of their way to be helpful. Very thoughtful for my needs and comfort. Good value for money. Clean comfortable room and bed.

Review 64:Beautiful old house. It had a lovely peaceful atmosphere. On the edge of town and back from the road. Very quiet. Rooms are comfortable and modern, but in keeping with the historical property. Staff are very helpful.

Review 65:location, friendly welcoming, helpful staff. lovely spacious room, washbasin in room, shared kitchen and lounge with tea/coffee. lovely shower with decent power.

Review 66:Television in kitchen sitting room.

Review 67:Lovely to stay somewhere with a kitchen and washing machine. Lovely peaceful place..different! Excellent wifi. Garden a delight.

Review 68:Breakfast wasn't what I expected, although it was all organic. Couldn't enter the hall as the entry time was 11am, which was after checkout.

Review 69:Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere , ideal for a break. would go again.

Review 70:Nothing to dislike if you read all of the information available you should be aware of anything like weak wifi, but that was a welcome break to be fair.

Review 71:Peaceful setting with a really unique feel.

Review 72:rooms a bit small but the building is from the 1500's and the modernisation has been done very sensetively.

Review 73:Swarthmoor Hall, the location, the gardens, the walks in the area, walking distance to the center of town by scenic footpath.

Review 74:Having to go home! Reading some negative reviews & comments on this site. The Big Mac generation & those addicted to their wifi may not be entirely comfortable here. Fair enough, look across the Bay, I'm sure you'll find what you're after Sharing the secret of this amazing place ( hope I can still book it when needed)

Review 75:Extremely friendly & helpful welcome Extraordinary historic building & grounds The utter tranquillity and comfort of the whole place 1st class facilities Perfect base for exploring. Astonishing bargain price

Review 76:Rather Spartan - no TV in room, TV in "Friendship Room" (lounge) on the small side.

Review 77:No problem arranging a late check in, nice grounds, relaxing and peaceful. Facilities for self catering.

Review 78:Breakfast was a bit too basic. I would pay more for a bit more! (e.g. fruit & cheese for example)

Review 79:The tranquillity. Relaxing grounds. I was going to arrive quite late and they kept in touch.

Review 80:Stairs, being asked to strip our beds before leaving, noisy doors banging , and the only place to get wifi was to stand right outside the office . Never again

Review 81:Nothing except the cram sheets and good water pressure in the shower.

Review 82:We signed up for 6 continental breakfasts - but what was on offer in the attached kitchen was not wonderful and certainly not worth paying an extra 60 quid. I would advise not paying for a so-called continental breakfast.

Review 83:It was very quiet, had a fascinating history and the staff were very welcoming. It was near to Ulverston which for us was important.

Review 84:- The fact that even though I was sitting right next to the router, I couldn't get an internet connection on my laptop

Review 85:- The staff bent over backwards to help - The beautiful grounds and the tranquillity of the location - The amazing value of money - The fact that there was a kitchen with basic food supplies and the trust that you will donate money to cover the cost of what you take - The outdoor seating area

Review 86:The internet connection does not work properly. If you are planning to work better you go with your own network.

Review 87:This is a wonderful place to stay. If you are looking for calm, rest and peace you should go to this place. It is not far from the city center and not far either for the main spots of the Lake District. Definitely will come back.
