Reviews for The Maltsters Arms

Review 1:Great accommodation in a lovely hamlet, excellent food, all reasonably priced. Franklin the lab loved the place too, especially swimming in the river from the small beach!

Review 2:Couldn't pick up a mobile phone service within the building

Review 3:The room. Although we'd booked only a small double room, we were upgraded to the best room in the house.

Review 4:Central heating in room did not work-given fan heaters. Leaking tap in bathroom meant floor always wet. Bed looked home made with mattress overlain by foam-very uncomfortable.

Review 5:Location and friendly staff. Food good.

Review 6:The pub is a little chilly, not a lot of seating but I'm sure in the summer it wouldn't be a problem specially with the riverside seating.

Review 7:Staff are really great, very friendly and helpful. Cooked breakfast was perfect as was the evening meal.

Review 8:They gave me food poisoning by serving me dodgy seafood. I was so poorly paramedics had to come to our bedroom in the bnb section of the pub. However, on leaving I actually had to haggle in my completely drained state in order to receive any sort of compensation for the terrible time we'd had and we still barely received any. It was an awful experience and ruined all our plans for a memorial we were attending that weekend! I have sent an email following up the events from that weekend that they have completely ignored.

Review 9:The location

Review 10:Took us nine hours to drive home in heavy traffic so rather wish we'd stayed on for a month or two!

Review 11:Beautiful position overlooking a tidal creek off the River Dart near Totnes. Excellent friendly and helpful staff, good food and spacious accommodation. What a wonderful Christmas break we've had! Thanks everyone. We'll be back!

Review 12:Mobile phone reception very intermittent (as in most of Devon btw). Hotel has Wifi, which sometimes conked out (but no biggie)

Review 13:The staff! The personal touches in the room! The excellent food! The location!

Review 14:Need to sort out missing and faulty keys but probably a one-off problem and didn't really cause us any hassle. Hard to find in the pitch black when GPS is not working properly, but that was my problem, not theirs. Just be warned.

Review 15:Friendly, flexible staff. Very comfortable rooms. Lovely location. Quiet. Very nice dinner (but almost all fish so don't expect many alternatives).

Review 16:On arriving, I realised I had booked the wrong week. Arriving a week early. They were very helpful and we still got a room. oops !

Review 17:the location is absolutely stunning and the surrounding area is as well

Review 18:The doors needed to be banged to shut properly.

Review 19:The room was lovely. Comfy bed and lounge furniture. Lovely breakfast overlooking the river. Friendly staff.

Review 20:There was a brief burst of what sounded like a banjo at one in the morning but I don't know where it came from!

Review 21:Friendly staff, clean and comfortable room, one veggie meal on evening menu but it was delicious. Fantastic having breakfast watching the river flow by.

Review 22:Menu choice limited. We stayed 3 nights with the menu the same each night but with less and less choice as particular dishes ran out.

Review 23:Great location. Great food.

Review 24:No wi fi. In our room which was a pain as there was no mobile connection either. Heating in room was great but bar area where we had breakfast very cold.

Review 25:the room was lovely

Review 26:Disappionted with the work going on on a saturday afternoon and being hy the back door very noisy no finishing touches no extra toiletries ie shower cap!breakfast buffet lacking in choice no friut or yoghurt

Review 27:Good size room with a bath dinner good but breakfast hit and miss not very organised .

Review 28:Menu for a vegetarian who doesn't eat cheese is poor. 1st night the only dish that was off the menu was the vegetarian. Having more than 1 vegetarian dish on the menu isn't difficult.

Review 29:The location and the friendly helpful staff are outstanding.

Review 30:not a bad experience as such, but one of the rooms with two windows, one which opened onto an outside seating area and the kitchen was subject to additional noise and the smell of food cooking which detracted from the general atmosphere.

Review 31:The situation by the creek was beautiful. The surrounding area very peaceful.

Review 32:Location is lovely but lanes are very narrow so don't come in a wide vehicle and be prepared to back up.

Review 33:Warm welcome at this lovely pub/restaurant.Good for fresh fish, imaginative cooking. We liked the friendly ambiance of this famous restaurant. Room very comfortable. Dog made very welcome.

Review 34:Wifi in bedroom erratic to say the least, shower needed to be pumped.

Review 35:Location is idyllic on the banks of a tributary of the River Dart. The menu is very good, and the food especially fish excellent. Real ale available all day. Plenty of car parking.

Review 36:The beds were uncomfortable but staff issued an extra under mattress which helped. Upon ordering a whole crab we were presented with it, shell included and no tools with which to try to,open it.not good enough! A place as foodie as this this should have at least half dressed the crab or opened for us.

Review 37:The location was delightful although remote, but the peace and tranquility was perfect

Review 38:Not much. Possibly attention to detail and the road part of which was closed on Sunday making access even more of a challenge.

Review 39:Lovely location and welcoming atmosphere. Nice food. Staff nice especially Sadie who is a real asset to The Maltsters.

Review 40:Room not quite ready, although we arrived after due check in time. Noisy guests in the middle of the night being sick and putting t.v. on loud and talking. Breakfast very good but did not like toast being put on a wooden board. Also a strange smell in the B & B section.

Review 41:Loved the location, already known to us as regular holidays in local areas.

Review 42:Pub was in a beautiful setting food was great the room was really nice and the staff were helpful, for the price of the room with breakfast I felt we didn't probably pay enough!

Review 43:Only down side for us was that there was not much else on the menu except fish. Also a slight fishy smell in our room.

Review 44:The room was lovely with a view of the river. Very comfortable bed and lovely size room.

Review 45:On arrival we were stood waiting to be welcomed while the receptionist was counting money. She did not even acknowledge us as we walked in, however having finished her counting she was quite helpful. Our room The Black Horse was very dark with a small window looking out onto a brick wall that was quite close. V

Review 46:Ambiance in both bar and restaurant friendly

Review 47:The location is beautiful and the description fully deserved. However, It would have been nice to have the menu described as "mainly fish"! The Blue Boar room was delightful and we shall be returning without a doubt.

Review 48:Only irritation was a creaky bed every time you tried to move!

Review 49:Lovely location by the edge of the river, very quiet, good food and friendly staff. Room was clean and comfortable with en-suite and a great shower

Review 50:had a whole crab for dinner and that's exactly what you got. could of been dressed or at least opened up for you. wouldn't say I didn't like but I would of expected to be presented with a little bit finesse!

Review 51:location brilliant, peaceful and tranquil. staff very attentive. highly recommend

Review 52:room was not really ready as clothes were left in wardrobe from previous people and bathroom needed to be cleaned. This I must say was attended to immediately when we brought it to managers attention. Beds were I am afraid rather hard.

Review 53:Friendly staff, location excellent and quiet at night even though it was bank holiday. Breakfasts excellent

Review 54:No hair dryer in room. But the staff explained they get taken. They had to go on a hunt for one. It's a shame people do this!

Review 55:The setting of this place is just beautiful. The food was outstanding. Really enjoyable stay

Review 56:The setting was wonderful, fantastic riverside views, great staff and service. Stayed for 7 nights, it was a great base for visiting many places and a pleasure to return to finish the day.

Review 57:There was a smell around the reception area and down the passage. We assumed it was coming up the drains from the river. No fruit to eat for breakfast.

Review 58:Location next to the river, and the beautiful old building. Great little village with walks through the trees and countryside

Review 59:Accommodation in need of refurbishment & updating. Bed firmness - hard. Some attention to detail required – Placement of mirror & hairdryer socket & cleanliness of room – windows & mirrors

Review 60:Location beautiful & relaxing, restaurant food locally sourced & very good. Excellent bar/restaurant/river area's. Staff very accommodating & provided 5* customer service

Review 61:Breakfast on the second morning was not as good as before. Orange juice was very bitter. One of my eggs was very pale, could even have been off - didn't eat it!

Review 62:The wifi although free didn't work on my phone, but it did on my husband's.

Review 63:The staff were very attentive and the restuarant food was excellent. A very special place.

Review 64:We could have used step by step instructions of how to find the place. We were a group of four. The furnishings of the cheapest room were not what I'd call boutique-very basic infact. Next room up was better.

Review 65:Beautiful location. Great pub restaurant. Friendly staff.

Review 66:maybe put slatted blinds in the ground bedroom,? so enable privacy without a total blackout . Also ask guests if they would like a window seat to enjoy the view at meal times, if available that is.

Review 67:The location is stunning.

Review 68:They had had a fire in the laundry room so things were a bit chaotic.the shower didnt work for 2 days but they did give us a reduction.

Review 69:Staff were very helpful room was comfy and pleasant. Location was superb.

Review 70:Very friendly staff but a little lacking in efficiency -- booked a table by email AND on check in but nothing reserved when we appeared for dinner . In height of season this sort of thing could be a problem .Room a little "tired" .

Review 71:Fab location , very friendly , good food ,good wine list , excellent breakfast, comfy bed. Good pub atmosphere.

Review 72:The menu - this is a great foodie establishment. The new owners are conscious of the Keith Floyd heritage and strive to serve innovative, fusionesque, food. One the river - truely a riparian delight. Situated deep in the Devon countryside, travelled by tiny roads through chocolate box villages and valleys.

Review 73:The entire pub was tired and in need of a thorough clean up. The entrance hallway smelled of damp and in our room I could smell some motor oil or boat grease - understandable given the proximity of sailboats moors outside the window - but not pleasant.

Review 74:Staff was polite and most tried to be helpful.

Review 75:We didn't feel instantly welcome because we arrived too early. At dinner on the first night I had difficulty with the menu because I don't like fish very much and the duck I had planned to have was off the menu

Review 76:The situation was amazing with lovely view if the river and the wildlife. The young staff were just lovely and couldn't be more helpful

Review 77:The shower was broke but the staff were accommodating and the problem was resolved

Review 78:The location was lovely, staff were friendly, food and wine was good, bed was comfy and easy to get the beach

Review 79:There was little choice of non-cooked food for breakfast. Fresh fruit and yoghurt would have been nice. Toast was barely browned and soggy.

Review 80:Excellent location. Staff were friendly. Dinner was good.

Review 81:The journey to get to the Maltsters is horrendous! The narrow single track road which lasts for a few miles really did my head in . Hardly any room for cars to pass each other and you need to put your wing mirrors in as you'll end up scratching them being so close to trees and bushes. I found this to my cost. The carpets in the room and hallway could do with a good clean.I don't think it's a good idea having such a light coloured carpet being so close to the outdoors.

Review 82:Michelle was very helpful.Tv wasn't working on arrival but members of staff worked on the problem and finally managed to resolve it.We were upgraded one night to a different room which was very kind although we didn't really like the room we were allocated as there was quite a musty smell and a non existent view from the window. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 83:Stayed here because of its past link with Keith Floyd: which is reflected in the decor. But for the high end cost of the superior room the attention to detail did not measure up. No fruit at breakfast. No selection of teas and Muesli on 1 out of 3 days. No soap in shower and other items not replenished. Luxury promised but not delivered.

Review 84:Lovely location by the river. Tranquil setting.

Review 85:Would have liked a couple of easy chairs as the small sofa was low and in our large room the TV was too far away to comfortably view.

Review 86:Staff and food were very good, lovely location with river view. We stayed in Floyds Inn.

Review 87:everthing good

Review 88:Location on river bank was interesting even at low tide. Plenty of ducks & swans. A good range of tables right by waters edge. A lively atmosphere with many diners eating outside an using the outside bar. Fabulous menu and food beutifully cooked.

Review 89:Nil

Review 90:Went for a surprise birthday party with friends, the staff were friendly and helpful throughout, the pub sells guest ales and has a well stocked bar, the restaurant served some very nice dishes. The pub has an outdoor but sheltered area with a log burning stove to view the river below. Outside there is riverside bar with seating. Ample parking is provided free. Our room was clean tidy and well equipped. All in all we had a great weekend made even better by the welcoming attitude of the staff. While there we saw several boats moor up at the side of the hotel and stop for food and drinks. Please beware this part of the river is tidal so time you arrival accordingly. Would recommend. PS. This used to be Keith Floyd's restaurant and the good food tradition is certainly being carried on.

Review 91:Pub with rooms right on waters edge . Off the beaten track ! Very much a chill out place , food amazing , and staff couldn't do enough for us! We will definatly be back !! Due to location be prepared to go without your mobile , signal can be intermittent

Review 92:1. wifi connection was very erratic in guest room but I guess that is due to the location as there was limited phone signal 2. no mobile phone signal - but that is just due to the location

Review 93:1. really comfy bed 2. silent 3. good bathroom facilities 4. beautiful location on the river 5. friendly and flexible staff/service 6. wifi included in room rate 7. warm cosy place

Review 94:Could not fault the food (fish is my favourite food), real ale and the wine - all reasonably priced. Bedroom small but hey, there were bigger ones available at modest extra cost. Great walking country - I did a short one of about 5 miles.

Review 95:Long wait for lunch service ie an hour for a salad! Some dippy staff unable to cope under pressure. Breakfast a little average poor cereal choices and not enough variety.

Review 96:Location great.

Review 97:The evening menu was very limited. Could make better use of local produce, need to add some simple dishes and add vegetables.

Review 98:The location was serene and very pretty.

Review 99:While good, attention to detail could be improved, hair dryer was hard wired to wall socket that, while understanding that it prevents theft is not practical. Breakfast was nice but basic.

Review 100:Location, atmosphere, friendly staff, clean, large bedroom and bathroom with lovely views over the estuary (Nightingale Room).

Review 101:Disappointed that the most expensive room in the Pub had a very large damp patch over the bed and bare damp plaster around the window. No apologies from management. Huge bathroom but tiny shower with a very dangerous hot pipe by the controls.

Review 102:The location and the food were excellent

Review 103:No phone reception due to network coverage. Wifi could be picked up in the bar. However, there was none in the room.

Review 104:Breakfast, room, bar, location, staff.

Review 105:Had booked the most expensive room but when we got shown to our room, it was obvious that it was not the room we had booked. We were however happy enough with the room but wanted to make sure we wouldn't get charged for the more expensive room, we were assured we wouldn't be. When we came to check out however, we were given a bill for the more expensive room. When we bought this up they were apologetic and changed it straight away but it was all a slight annoyance, especially not getting the room we wanted. Also as stated in the room, we requested fresh milk but it didn't arrive and I had to chase for it.

Review 106:Great Location. Had a fantastic evening meal and lovely breakfast. Pub / restaurant staff are very friendly and attentive. Felt as a pub and restaurant, can't be faulted but not so impressed with the B&B side. Felt the room was overpriced.

Review 107:First night food had was not very good standard Serving staff were a bit inexperienced and at times slow.

Review 108:Beautiful location Spacious and modern rooms

Review 109:The service at lunch was poor. The en suite bathroom was not properly clean and there was no soap in the shower. Builders making a noise during the day.

Review 110:The location.Effecient staff at breakfast.

Review 111:Would have like a wider choice for breakfast. ie fresh fruit and yogurt.

Review 112:The view from window. Ideal for bird watching on the river. Quiet location Dinner was excellent

Review 113:Small if worth mentioning Wi Fi not best if honesty

Review 114:Private peaceful place. Clean spacious room nice surrounding area , Bar and food good. Staff friendly and helpful

Review 115:Decided to have evening meal at the pub due to its remoteness, 1st evening service was very good 2nd evening not good, had to wait about 40 minutes for our meal & had to ask twice for a jug of water.

Review 116:Great breakfasts,bed comfortable,generaly a nice stay.

Review 117:Nothing

Review 118:The location was wonderful: right on the Dart estuary. The friendly staff, superb food at very reasonable prices, and the clean and comfortable room made for a memorable stay.

Review 119:Lack of immediately local off the lead dog walking suitable for oldies like us without driving somewhere, Local walks too steep and wet for us, great if your young and fit. Why did the entertainer start at 9oc after most diners had gone??

Review 120:Wonderful seafood that we love, great quality and huge portions. Extremely dog friendly, our ensuite was to a high standard. Very pretty location.

Review 121:Ordered Nibbles as a 'Starter' but Main Course arrived before we had finished. Water in the shower was dangerously hot. Difficult to regulate - not clear which mechanism was to alter temperature and which was to turn off water.

Review 122:Location Superb Food Locals Pub with Friendly Feel Lovely facilities Helpful, pleasant staff.

Review 123:Internet access was down on my arrival and I was told that either I hadn't booked or that the room was already taken. I was unable to have a cooked breakfast as the chef did not arrive until after 8.30 am.

Review 124:Good food

Review 125:The only negative and there is nothing that can rectify this ,is that some of the bedrooms have a stunning view of the water ,whilst rooms at the back have a view of a wall- still pleasant.

Review 126:The helpfulness of the staff. Lovely view from restaurant and great food

Review 127:Noise from office above bedroom a little distracting but did not spoil the stay.

Review 128:Quiet, peaceful and picturesque village. A little off the beaten track but well worth a visit. Keith Floyd's connection adds to the interest.

Review 129:Originally offered a table facing a wall ! Asked to b moved and ended up in a second quiter room with river views which was great being a solo traveller. Also had interesting books about previous celebrity owner.

Review 130:Nice views, great room , good food.

Review 131:Wood fires left you smelling like a bonfire. No comfortable lounge type seating.

Review 132:Friendly staff, very good room. Great river location, with lovely views

Review 133:Lovely pub set in a stunning location on Bow Creek. Beautiful view from room.Staff friendly and helpful with lots of local knowledge. Bed comfortable. Nice room decor. Tasty breakfast. Will return.

Review 134:Just a warning, the lanes down to the Maltsters Arms are very narrow with passing places - proceed with caution.

Review 135:Our room was very spacious & very comfortable however, the most praise must go to Anna who looked after us at meal times, she was wonderful, she could not do enough for us, a valueable asset.

Review 136:Narrow country lanes to reach it - but manageable and worth the effort. Erratic heating but manageress quickly solved the issue. No mobile phone signal - maybe that is a good thing!

Review 137:Very helpful and friendly manageress. Super food...the fish pie is unbelievably good - you need to be hungry to do it justice! Relaxing and comfortable stay. Wifi excellent.

Review 138:The towels could be a little thicker.. But that's only thing that could be improved.

Review 139:On our arrival the staff were really welcoming. We had a complimentary upgrade to a superior room that overlooked the river. It was quiet and spotless. We ate in the restaurant and the food was great, recommend the fish and chips and the pigeon starter. Huge portions too! The restaurant and bar had a lovely relaxed ambience. Breakfast was a struggle because we were still digesting our enormous dinners but it was also wonderful. Recommend this place to all.

Review 140:Our room was 'blue boar', to close to the office and hallway as you hear everybody walking on the wood flooring late at night & early morning. Behind the headboard is a cupboard/small door which a draft comes through, used spare pillows to block it up. Skylight blind broken so had to wedge something in it to block out the light. A very dog friendly place !!

Review 141:It's a great location to stay, lovely food and atmosphere. Staff very nice and helpfull. Although there was a few minus points, I think it was probably just the room we were in, would certainly recommend to others, but to choose another room!
