Reviews for East Friars Bed and Breakfast

Review 1:Had to leave :-(

Review 2:Comfortable, relaxed environment. Excellent hosts. Really homely. Great location and views. Massive main bedroom. And the hosts welcomed us, even over the Christmas period.

Review 3:All was fabulous, nothing to write here!

Review 4:We felt welcome from the moment we got to the bed and breakfast by the owners and their family. So friendly and chatty. Nothing was to much trouble and our room was beautiful and the view of the river was very relaxing.

Review 5:Maybe a bit more light available in garden when it's dark, to navigate the path

Review 6:East Friars is in an ideal location for walking into town; has on-site parking; we had an enormous room and a huge, comfortable bed; the room was clean, as was the bathroom; the room was nicely quiet; the hosts were very friendly and provided a wonderful breakfast overlooking the river. We were made to feel really welcome and would love to go back again!

Review 7:Lovely lovely hosts - the breakfast was delicious and the accommodation was very cosy and incredible value for money. My boyfriend is vegan and he was thrilled with Polly's home made vegan sausages.

Review 8:Very good location,on the river handy for the town and cathedral. Owners very hospitable and lovely breakfast. .quirky and unique b&b Would happily stay again..

Review 9:Lovely family house, very friendly artist owners with two delightful cats and a dog. Warm and comfy bed then an excellent breakfast watching the Wye in flood going past the end of the garden.

Review 10:Dìstance to town centre perfect 2min stroll. Warm and friendly welcome from family. Larger than normal bedroom with character and wonderful views of the river. Very good breakfast served in conservatory overlooking river. Just perfect.

Review 11:Fairly disorganised with little attention paid to clearing up for guests. Twin beds agreed but not provided, room was cold despite assurances of increased heating and bathroom had no toilet-roll holder, just a roll on the floor. Parking very awkward.

Review 12:Nice people.

Review 13:Breakfast rather spartan (if you are a big eater) and parking rather awkward.

Review 14:A family home with very welcoming owners. Excellent location for city centre.

Review 15:We had a warm reception from the proprieters as they welcomed us to join them in their family home. It is like an art festival throughout the house. Breakfast was fab along with the peaceful rivier view.

Review 16:Lovely comfortable home from home family run B&B with a great location and views over the river Wye. Roger, Polly and their lovely family make you feel so welcome! Great breakfast too!

Review 17:N/A

Review 18:The quirkyness of the place. Literally staying in someone's house. Polly and Roger were such a welcoming couple who made you feel at home. Homemade bread and jams for breakfast and all locally sourced food. Not forgetting Bea, their lovely mutely! And location was great including a picturesque view of the river Wye from the breakfast room. Thank you both.

Review 19:We wanted to stay in a nice place within easy walking distance of Hereford - East Friars was perfect. Our host's, Polly & Roger, made us very welcome in their very eclectic home. We had the spacious family room with an enormous and very comfortable bed. We were only there for one night, but a most enjoyable one!

Review 20:Although the family area of the house seemed somewhat chaotic our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. The breakfast was lovely with local apple juice and homemade jam and marmalade.

Review 21:A warm welcome to a comfortable family home. A great breakfast with local produce and home made bread and preserves.lovely hosts who could not be more helpful.

Review 22:Arriving in the dark, found the constant barking of the dog rather intimidating. But once the owners introduced us to the dog, it was fine. Riverside location spoilt a bit by noise from modern road bridge close by.

Review 23:Very warm welcome. Felt like part of the family straight away. Lovely victorian house, with stylish and quirky interior design. Absolutely delicious breakfast, prepared with ingredients from local farmers and homemade bread and marmalade.

Review 24:The room was great, extremely large, two single beds, one queen and still plenty of room to move around, very unusual in our experience! The view from our room overlooking the river was lovely, breakfast in the conservatory was delicious. Polly and Roger made us feel so welcome and our children didn't want to leave! Will definitely return!

Review 25:The bed was hard and uncomfortable - desperately needs a new mattress. Huge mirror but not placed on the wall so couldn't see in it!

Review 26:Friendly owners, quirky décor, riverside location

Review 27:A great place with a great vibe ! Very friendly and helpful people. We really like the atmosphere there. The rooms were very spacious and clean. Best breakfast we had during our entire trip !

Review 28:Such a relaxed atmosphere, a home from home, total contrast to some of the stuffy soulless places we have stayed. Lovely family, all so friendly. Close to everything we needed. Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was delicious. Our dog was made as welcome as we were, fantastic!

Review 29:We really enjoyed our stay at East Friars - the house feels 'real' - lots of art and books around, not pristine and lifeless, and the owners are friendly and helpful. We felt at home there. The location is great, overlooking the Wye, and the breakfast was very good.

Review 30:Wonderful warm welcome; made to feel at home straight away. Polly made us a beautiful dinner which was greatly appreciated after our journey. We loved the way that the whole family were involved in making our stay special.

Review 31:Atmosphere & friendliness, place to read or talk to other guests, view of river, guest fridge with milk, welcome to eat own food on premises, delicious breakfasts.

Review 32:Don't book this if you expect the same service as other B&B's for the same money. This is really an eccentric homestay in which you need to accept you are almost one of the family - sharing an untidy bathroom, sleeping in single beds that have seen better days and in a room that was very grubby. I'm not sure how we got such a different experience to others on Booking .com but we booked the shepherds hut which has been out of action for some time due to the owners broken leg, but ended up with a twin room overlooking the river. There was an alternative small double room that overlooked the back garden but this too wasn't great. We weren't given towels, had to ask for milk and tea bags and didn't have a TV (not essential). I use a lot of B&B's but wouldn't recommend this place unless you (or your associates) are happy with the above.

Review 33:Location to the city centre, parking, very relaxed house, the dog is cute, breakfast was tasty with freshly made bread on the first day.

Review 34:Lovely family home on the river. Triple/Family room is very spacious, comfortable beds with good shower. Accommodated early check in and early breakfast the next day (we attended a weekend wedding and were restricted by train times)

Review 35:The family are really friendly and welcoming. We felt at home as soon as we got there. The breakfast was the best I've ever had at any bed and breakfast. The art work around the house is amazing. I would recommend to everyone

Review 36:Owners were fantastic, couldn't have been more helpful or welcoming. Best breakfast I have ever tasted, and of course eating it on the decking overlooking the river made it even better.

Review 37:If you don't like animals you need to think again. Cute dog but I have a cat phobia, so was less than pleased to find they had two, one of which jumped on a chair while we were having breakfast. Also would have liked a mirror in the bedroom.

Review 38:This was a lovely, quirky, laid back B & B. The owners were really, really friendly and the setting was ideal for our needs.

Review 39:Instantly made to feel at home, like visiting relatives. The children help out with the running of the B&B, great way to teach kids about money and hard work. Breakfast was a beautifully presented English breakfast. Nice to chat to other visitors over breakfast. The family pets are so friendly and fun to play with. All round homely stay, lovely owners - would stay again.

Review 40:A bit random & cluttered. No lock on bedroom door!

Review 41:Dont be put off by first appearances. You will be made very welcome and breakfast is great. View of river is peacef

Review 42:the bedroom ,wasnt what we expected ,but was very clean. a bit messy in the house where we had breakfast and garden lovely looking over river but again untidy.

Review 43:the owners were lovely ,helpfull and the breakfast was excellent ,not huge but very tasty and well presented and relaxing.

Review 44:Great location, fantastic food, homely and welcoming feel! Very accommodating owners, and plenty of other quirky accommodation arrangements such as the gypsy style caravan in the garden for the next visit.

Review 45:A lovely couple. A nice conversation with other guests over breakfast. They took our booking late evening when our other accommodation let us down . If you like a friendly homely b&b , this will suit you perfectly.

Review 46:Breakfast was not very much. Everything had a very untidy look, a bit chaotic, nevertheless not really unclean.

Review 47:Location is really good for citytrip. Caravan was not available so they gave us a nice room outside the mainhouse, that was godsend. People were friendly.

Review 48:I can't even complain about the weather.

Review 49:The warmest & most hospitable accomodation I have had the pleasure of staying at. The lovely Megan even babysat our little one while we had breakfast. Cannot fault the place. Highly recommend it!!

Review 50:Made to feel welcome by all of the family and really accommodating to our baby daughter. Excellent breakfast with beautiful view. Close to town centre and other places to visit.

Review 51:Nothing! Didn't use wi-fi so cannot comment.

Review 52:Lovely people with a very warm welcome! Situated in the Ruver back so views are fab. Room was spacious and very clean. Felt more like a house guest than a paying guest! It's a very personal experience... Nothing like a chain hotel but if you like individuality and somewhere with a difference this is ideal. Breakfast was delicious! Would definitely stay there again!

Review 53:It's not a complaint, but it's a fair way from the caravan to the toilet in the middle of the night.

Review 54:The little gypsy caravan we stayed in was lovely. Roger and Polly were welcoming and very accommodating. Breakfast was delicious.

Review 55:We really liked the hosts and the location and the dog and the weather and my daughter liked the trampoline. Roger and Polly were so friendly and laid back - we felt like it was more like a friends house than a B&B. The caravan was really quirky and perfect for our trailer adventure weekend. Location also really close to the town centre and easy to get around - we are on foot and arrived by train. It was easy to find, and near to all ameneties. Great view of the river and lovely breakfast room.

Review 56:Nothing we did not like

Review 57:The friendliness of the hoteliers. They were lovely and made us feel welcome. The room was spacious for our family with free wi fi and TV, which was great for our older children. The beds were comfortable and we loved the bohemian style. We felt very relaxed and enjoyed the home made bread for breakfast, delicious food! The owners were very helpful with any information we needed. Being next to the river made it special. We had everything we needed. Would definitely return.

Review 58:Before we arrived I checked the ratings and quite frankly, thought they seemed too good to be true! Then we arrived and had the friendliest and most welcoming arrival, they were happy to chat with us but also very respectful of the fact that we might just want to do our own thing. The breakfast in the morning was superb, excellent for vegetarians with homemade veg sausages and slow roasted tomatoes a real highlight!

Review 59:The breakfast was included in the price (always a good thing) but it was a really nice breakfast complete with home baked bread and partaken from a conservatory overlooking The River Wye.

Review 60:leaving !

Review 61:From the start we felt welcome. we were invited in like old friends. the family made us feel at home. very friendly and warm. the food was excellent. the rooms very comfortable and cosy. the pets also welcomed us and were very loving. Bea, the dog is very sweet and loves your company, the two cats (father and daughter) are beautiful. The art works are absolutely amazing !! very homely. we would recommend this place to stay. (not a bland, boring wall in sight - promise !)

Review 62:The owners were very friendly, knowledgeable and they had a fab dog (which I wanted to take home!). I liked the paintings and the setting on the River Wye was ideal and close to Hereford City Centre. Breakfast was spot on,this was an enjoyable and personable stay, thanks.

Review 63:Great breakfast and a fabulous place to stay. We were on a fishing break and it is ideally situated for the River Wye (our room overlooked the river). The owners aren't anglers, but will be able to point you in the right direction for a nearby knowledgable tackle shop where you can get permits.

Review 64:Norhing

Review 65:Loved the caravan. So pet friendly rwaly enjoyed my stay made to feel at home. Breakfast was lovely with home made bread what a treat. Will definitely be back and recommend to my friends.

Review 66:Not value for money. Worn cold van with small heater.

Review 67:Breakfast and friendliness. Small heater in freezing van and old and worn. Not value for money at all.

Review 68:All good

Review 69:They make u really feel welcome and we choose the retro caravan what is lovely and cosy. The moments when u need to use the house they make u really comfortable. The breakfast was soberb!!Cooked but nothing Is fried..Poched eggs ,grill bacon and sausage..a selection of cereal and jam..and all this in a lovely conservatory with a river view...all sort of books around what is the family mark culture and knowledge.

Review 70:Nothing

Review 71:East Friars is a wonderful home away from home.We were greeted so very warmly on our arrival by Roger & the gorgeous Bea (the dog). Our room was fabulous(we had the large family room overlooking the river) with en suite bathroom.I loved the fresh smelling linen on the beds & the books & games. The lovely Polly cooked our delicious breakfast in the morning & we sat in the conservatory looking out over the river. We stayed for two nights & were made to feel so very welcome,it was more like staying with old friends than in a b&b.Nothing was too much trouble.I especially loved Roger coming to greet us on our return from a night out, saying how lovely it was to see us home!! This b&b is very homely, full of art, books, kids & one very adorable dog!! We will definitely be returning, can't wait !!!

Review 72:The (slight) inconvenience of bathroom facilities separate to caravan accommodation.

Review 73:Matchless homemade/locally sourced breakfasts; a helpful approach to unusual requests; Polly and Roger went the extra mile. Comfy duvets made a warm sleeping nest in the caravan, despite brisk autumn weather.

Review 74:Nothing negative whatsoever.

Review 75:Most of all the hosts Roger and Polly. Immediately made us feel at ease and nothing was too much trouble to them. If you are on a budget like quirkiness but still like a good feed you'll love it. We stayed in the caravan and it was great!!

Review 76:Had to walk through the garden and up the stairs to access the bathroom which is shared with others, but weather was good so not too inconvenient.

Review 77:This won't suit everyone but I loved it - very quirky and friendly. Excellent breakfast. Very good location near to the town centre.

Review 78:Having to walk across the garden to use the facilities was ok for us and the time of year I am not sure I would be as comfortable with it in the winter period but maybe the family do not let that facility all year round.

Review 79:The family. The family were so at ease with their guests, the welcome was genuine and they were eager to assist in any way at all. It was like being at home. The time choosen for breakfast was honoured. The breakfast was served promptly and hot even ensuring my companion's Gluten Free diet was accommodated. We both love bets and the dog was so friendly. We met other guests at breakfast and they appeared at ease also. The facilities were clean and tidy and ample for our needs.

Review 80:The initial impression was a garden full of rubbish and building materials. Inside the property was untidy with possessions piled everywhere, trailing power cables and hazardous stairs. One of our bathrooms was not clean. The food preparation area was dirty and untidy.

Review 81:Reasonable location

Review 82:I stayed in a caravan in the garden and the toilet was in the house. I understand there are plans to create an outside toilet in the future. This would not stop me from visiting again.

Review 83:East Friars was the perfect start to my holiday. The family was so welcoming with a house full of interesting things to talk about and sitting in the garden by the river each evening was lovely. Don't stay in this house if you are a neat freak. It's fabulously full of the families lovely interesting belongings.

Review 84:Can't think of anything I didn't like actually. Will go again.

Review 85:The hosts (husband and wife) are charming and natural. One is immediately at ease and feeling very welcome. We don't like very formal rules and regs being stuffed down our throats by receptionists so it was lovely. On our request, we had a vegetarian cooked breakfast (v.good home made, not L. McC) in pleasant surroundings in the good company of two other interesting guests. Felt comfortable to come and go as it suited us in a congenial family atmosphere.

Review 86:To be honest, nothing as it filled my needs to a tee !!!

Review 87:The location was super, on the banks of the river wye, what more could you ask for, stunning views while eating breakfast.

Review 88:We had the twin room (which also had a double bed). I took the bed nearest the en suite which I found to be extremely uncomfortable and squeaked every time I moved. However my friend had no problem with her bed. I'm probably nit-picking but it would have been useful to have had a mirror in the bedroom. I also noticed the sink must've been partly blocked as the water took ages to drain away.

Review 89:The owners and their family were very friendly and welcoming; really nice people. When we arrived we were met by one of the sons and a delightful dog! He gave us a recommendation of where to eat which was helpful. Lovely location by the river and only a few minutes walk to the town centre. The breakfast was very nice (cereal followed by cooked breakfast; egg bacon sausage and tomatoes all locally sourced I believe and as much toast as we wanted, baked by the owner) refills of tea/coffee also provided. There was also vegetarian option. There was a coffee machine in the lounge area for our use during the day and in the room was a kettle and tea. The house had an array of paintings displayed and loads of books. This made it all very interesting. I would stay here again and recommend to others.

Review 90:Road was a bit noisy for us and we are more used to hotels and anonymity

Review 91:Lovely welcome, felt immediately part of the family, good breakfast, met some interesting people, easy to walk into town and the river was wonderful. Polly and Roger were most kind and friendly. Great dog too.

Review 92:Owners were very welcoming. The house was charming and in a perfect location. Breakfast was outstanding. I even enjoyed sleeping in the caravan. Best value Guest House ever for the laid back traveller. Like a weekend with old friends.

Review 93:East Friars is a unique and very relaxed b&b, we absolutely loved staying there! Polly and Roger are very friendly and accommodating hosts. The house is beautiful and the breakfasts are delicious- there's even an adorable pup to play with! We would recommend East Friars to anyone wanting to avoid the stuffy atmosphere of a traditional b&b.

Review 94:Would have liked to chose my breakfast items.

Review 95:Friendly, unpretentious and welcoming. Felt like we were the house guests of the owners and their children and pets, rather than paying guests. Great if you like art, loads of books to read, a real old-fashioned big house with views over the river. We walked to the town centre via the subway and found it very convenient for the cathedral and shops. Breakfast is full of good quality ingredients, well cooked. Loved the pet doves too!

Review 96:nothing

Review 97:nothing was to much trouble and the location was beautiful roger and polly were brilliant hosts really friendly and a relaxed family atmosphere i would really recommend east friars for your stay we are planning a return trip in april yours kevin and alan who recently stayed 5 days.

Review 98:The only drawbacks are the obverse of the attractions. Come prepared for a trek across the lawn and possible queue for the bathroom.

Review 99:Staying at East Friars (in the caravans or tent) is less 'b&b' and more 'glamping with a favourite uncle or cousin'. It's a well lived-in family house crammed with art and interest. 5 minutes walk from Hereford cathedral close, the garden is secluded with a terrace next to the river Wye offering as much tranquility as is possible when only just outside the inner ring road. Breakfast overlooking the Wye is a real treat: the finest ingredients, excellently cooked. And nothing is too much trouble for the hosts. So long as you can cope with the downsides, its a gem at a budget price.

Review 100:Lack of TV might deter some.

Review 101:Hosts took time to chat and did not treat us as “Us and them”. Breakfast was fun and it was nice to sit in the conservatory. Location is perfect for Hereford centre.

Review 102:The little retro 1970s caravan in the garden is charming. We enjoyed our weekend and use of the house is a bonus if you are staying in the caravan. Lovely breakfast perfectly cooked for us vegetarians. The family is lovely and very welcoming.

Review 103:As soon as we arrived we were greeted by Polly and Roger (the owners, not forgetting Bea, the dog). The warmth of the welcome was wonderful and we were made to feel as members of the family. Had a wonderful night's sleep. We walked to the Cathedral and City Centre several times a day as this only took abouit 5 mins.

Review 104:Nothing we did not like!

Review 105:We enjoyed the stay at East Friars very much. The surroundings and the river next to the accomodation make it perfect. Our kids liked it very much as well and would have loved to stay longer as just one night (especially our 9 year old son, he was happy with the trampolin in the garden). The owners were very kind and we felt very welcome and would recommend this location to everyone.

Review 106:Noise of road bridge - but it was summer and we left bedroom windows wide open.

Review 107:Excellent breakfast, not greasy, homemade bread, fresh poached egg - yum! Characterful house, homely, friendly. Complete opposite of Premier Inn style chain hotels.

Review 108:It felt a little like we were intruding into someone else's home, a new sensation for us.

Review 109:The homely feeling, but we did not have long enough to really evaluate it properly. A good breakfast.

Review 110:The friendliness of the family, the huge and airy bedroom, the idyllic terrace by the river, the cups of tea and coffee that always seemed to materialise at the right time, off-street parking five minutes from the cathedral

Review 111:Everything was fine ,no issues whatsoever.

Review 112:The welcome was fantastic. We were made to feel at home from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. The rooms were spacious and the house full of original features. The setting on the banks of the River Wye & outside decking area had a calming influence.

Review 113:Can't think of anything!

Review 114:A lovely welcome was awaiting us. Polly and Roger made you feel at home as soon as you stepped into their lovely house. Our room overlooked the river and was spacious and very comfortable. My vegetarian daughter was so impressed with Polly's homemade veggie sausages that Polly had prepared for her breakfast that she asked for the recipe. It was a shame we only stayed for one night.

Review 115:NOTHING

Review 116:we stayed in the Retro Caravan for one night with our Terrier and would have liked to stay longer. The weather was wonderful and we were able to sit in the garden and on the newly built decking outside the caravan till late at night. Polly, Roger, Meg and Bee were very welcoming and we felt like we had known them forever. The caravan was very light and comfortable. Breakfast was great with well cooked local produce. Will definitely want to return.

Review 117:Would have liked tea and coffee making facilities in room, but a tray of tea was readily brought to us on request.

Review 118:Friendly family run b&b. Great location for exploring Hereford. Local produce and home made bread for breakfast, yummy! Gluten free diet catered for, including cereals and bread.
