Reviews for Royal Seven Stars Hotel
Review 1:I did not think a step up to the shower cubicle was a very good idea with wet feet.
Review 2:Very friendley and helpful staff. Loved my complimentary glass of champagne. Room was a good size and comfortable. It was on the 1st Floor which met my request for as few steps as possible because of arthritis. Food in bar was tasty and service was great. Thank you to all.
Review 3:Nothing bad to report!
Review 4:I like the location of the Seven Stars in the heart of Totnes. Liked the relaxed atmosphere and the fact it was busy with local people as well coming in for coffee etc. The room was comfortable and nicely decorated.
Review 5:The room was located a bit too close to the wedding event that was on that evening. I would have preferred a room not so sclose due to the noise but to be fair, this ceased promptly at midnight, so no bother!
Review 6:Most things, location, staff, restaurant etc
Review 7:Impossible to park in small outside area. Hotel does not offer any overspill options & car parks close are all short-stay. Some decor tired.
Review 8:Good location for town, friendly staff.
Review 9:Slight problem with the door key. Slight problem (possible leak) with their shower cubicle. Scaffolding outside bedroom window.
Review 10:Central location. Close to Dartington Hall - where we had a meeting. Friendly staff. Comfortable room.
Review 11:We did request a double room on our booking form but there had been a mix up at the hotel and so were only able to be offered a twin room. Although it was a very nice twin room it was not as requested.
Review 12:Friendly staff, excellent service and the champagne bar was superb.
Review 13:I thought the room was a little thrown together, very odd built in cabinets etc. Only one, rather grey looking robe, when there were two of us booked in. A pubic hair on the shower hose. I thought the food in the restaurant was poor for the price. Our starters were particularly disappointing (Moules Marinieres and King Prawns with Avocado Mousse.) Room extremely hot and A/C was ineffective; it kept resetting back to 25degrees
Review 14:I liked the location. I liked the look/decor of the downstairs bars and restaurants. Service and Staff were excellent.
Review 15:Breakfast was disappointing, my order was wrong so when I got my poached egg the rest was tepid. Also the eggs had been cooked in vinegar water and not drained properly so everything had a very strong vinegar taste. We have stayed here many times and this was the first time that the breakfast had been below par.
Review 16:Great staff and comfort
Review 17:Can be a little noisy at weekends. Car parking can be difficult as car park very small, but other parking spaces are available off site.
Review 18:Within easy walking distance of the town. Lively atmosphere and popular with locals and visitors
Review 19:Breakfast not included which I hadn't registered when booking. Of course this was my lookout. But I was told that because I had booked through booking.com rather than their website the price didn't include the breakfast. The breakfast being about £13 each means that either the hotel are making more money on people who book through booking.com rather than their website or booking.com are asking for a very large fee. Either way, I didn't feel it made the room good value for money.
Review 20:We found the staff extremely helpful but unobtrusive. Our bedroom was attractive and comfortable and everything worked perfectly. On one evening we asked for dinner for 17 and were given the Library with an apparently effortlessly well cooked meal and friendly expert service.
Review 21:As the only hotel on the flat in the centre of Totnes I booked this so that my elderly parents would have some independence during our visit. I didn't realise that hotel is such a popular drinking and eating venue spanning the whole of the hotel frontage, both inside and out. I stay in hotels regularly but have never stayed in such a noisy hotel, both during the day and at night. On weekdays bar closes at 11pm, so there is residual noise through to midnight, impacting on all rooms at front of hotel. On Friday and Saturday bar is open until midnight, so on the Friday night the noise did not die down until approaching 1pm. By then we had already decided to cancel the Saturday night stay - the only time I've ever checked out of a hotel early. The staff were charming and apologetic, but this did not make up for such a disappointing experience. Bathrooms in both rooms had tiny showers. You have to be happy to hand over car keys to reception as cars need to be double parked. On one occasion we had to wait 15 minutes to leave car park whilst hotel tracked down car owners who had not left keys in reception.
Review 22:Large comfortable beds, although in one of the rooms it was two singles pushed together. The staff were unfailing helpful and pleasant.
Review 23:Very noisy. We're moved a couple of times as weddings on both nights we stayed and music from function room was very loud until midnight. However after we checked out I complained and staff were very good and gave me a discount on my room rate. Bit on the expensive side, especially as breakfast not included.
Review 24:Lovely comfortable rooms, nice staff, good pub downstairs, great central location
Review 25:Breakfast Chef needs a course in making nice creamy scrambled eggs. They are horrible when they resemble cardboard! Lovely dinner for two - except the over-cooked pigeon breast, Lamb was perfect, though.
Review 26:Very helpful staff and service. Well appointed bedroom. Shower efficient - if rather small.
Review 27:Lack of bath, very small bathroom and shower. Very small room, would not want to share.
Review 28:The staff are lovely, very friendly and helpful. Situated in the glorious old town of totnes
Review 29:The whole place creaked and was exceptionally noisy. I took some time to write this review (I was there 3 weeks ago) so that I could try and get some distance and objectivity about my views but I still feel that for the money I was charged the hotel should have invested in more noise reduction. I could hear toilets flushing, people showering and anyone who walked along the corridor that I was on and the corridor above. I'm taking it for granted that I would hear conversations but didn't expect to hear people walking around in their rooms to such a great extent. I've stayed in rooms above pubs previously and this hotel felt like that with the exception of the amount we were being charged. I came away from there feeling that I had not had a restful stay. Having said that i do realise it is an old building and expect there might be a limited amount that can be done about these things. I did also spend a lot of time in the room so accept that this may have amplified any issues I noticed. I have a suggestion about the parking. Limited parking was available and my keys were left with staff so that the car could be moved if necessary. The system worked OK but I just wonder if some sort of deal could not be worked out with the morrissons down the road so that residents could park there - I'd be prepared to pay a reasonable fee for that and maybe others would too.
Review 30:Staff were very accommodating and helpful. I wasn't very well during my trip and they were very helpful and very kind. The food in the bar was great..would definitely want to eat there again if I were in Totnes and would happily recommend it to others. Room was clean and comfortable...but that's what I expect from a hotel.
Review 31:The restaurant and staff not very good. The plates are hotter than the food. Very expensive options and small servings. Limited menu. Staff missing when you need them. drinks very expensive from the bar.
Review 32:The location is fantastic. Limited parking but nit too bad. Rail station 10 to 15 minute walk.
Review 33:Excellent food. Timely & good service at the table. overnight stay - clean and comfortable room. good breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff throughout.
Review 34:No bad experiences. Nor have I had any on earlier visits. Perhaps flooring above Room 12 might do with checking. Noisy footsteps overhead.
Review 35:The staff members were welcoming and extremely helpful. Facilities were thoughtfully and discreetly provided. I did not ask about Wifi but will ask about it on next visit. Breakfast was excellent.
Review 36:The only bad point was price of breakfast 10.95 on top of room rate of 118.75
Review 37:The Location was Perfect as was central short walk from train station . hotel was lovely clean and bright .
Review 38:noise at outside seating went on till 1.30am also car parkingk at rear very cramped. sadly we had the Daniel Defoe deluxe room which on arrival after a hard days rambling no hot water to be found. the staff informed us an engineer had been summoned who arrived after we had gone to bed. The ten percent discount was paltry recompense, a big let down for a souped up hotel.
Review 39:locations variety of bars
Review 40:Agatha Christie Room - the most uncomfortable bed ever! Failed to sleep at all. Torn carpet. Broken furniture. Some lights not working. This hotel ought to have a lift.
Review 41:Very clean. Brasserie food excellent. Staff excellent.
Review 42:Room a bit stuffy and fronting a noisy road - flip side of great location. Also every sounds travels from above, below and next door. This was the only thing stopping it getting an 'excellent' review.
Review 43:Staff in bar especially lovely and nothing too much trouble. Food excellent and attentive service. Building oozes character and tasteful room.
Review 44:On arrival there was a mix up with our breakfast as the receptionist said it wasn't included in the room, when it was Also, my mum had some flowers for us which she was told they would be put in our room for when we arrived and they had forgotten to do it
Review 45:the choice of three restuarants was fantastic The food was delicious Beautiful room and a lovely touch with the free Calender and canvas bag
Review 46:The shower could have been more powerful and the Wifi was a bit slow in the bedroom, but as I was there for leisure it wasn't a problem. I was informed that the Wifi was better in the bar should I want it.
Review 47:All of the above!
Review 48:One of the girls behind the bar was honestly the most rude, disinterested member of staff I have ever come across. So incredibly rude, she couldn't even be bothered to look up. She was so awful it was actually hysterically funny.
Review 49:The bed was amazing! The general atmosphere was great, food was great, majority of the staff were brilliant.
Review 50:the fact that we paid for room and breakfast yet when we arrived were told that booking .com don't offer this it is room only - however the staff were brilliant and refunded the additional charges as we had an email stating b&b
Review 51:room was beautiful with good facilities and very comfortable
Review 52:They forgot my early morning call on my workshop day (luckily my alarm clock sufficed) and on the 2nd night the air-conditioning unit over the bed clicked incessantly even though "off" and I had to stuff cotton wool in my ears. Hopefully my complaints will put that to rights. I had overlooked the fact that breakfast was extra and not a given when booked via booking.com which was rather irritating.
Review 53:The hotel was bright and busy but quiet at night. Loved the Regency ambience - delicious food and very welcoming and accommodating staff. Good temperature inside and well-appointed room - loved the magnificent king-size bed all for me. All just what I required!
Review 54:When checking out we were going to be charged extra for breakfast despite having recieved an email from the hotel which stated it was included in the price.
Review 55:Good breakfast and friendly welcome. Receptionsit who checked us out did agree not to charge extra for breakfast.
Review 56:Only Friday music. If cant arrive until sat. its a bit quiet didn't feel much like xmas time. Although decorations were excellent and very classy.
Review 57:2nd visit as enjoyed 1st time. We visited Torquay Exeter Dartmouth Kingsbridge etc. all on public during 2 stays staff most helpful with timetables etc. Would visit again but try to make the fri. for some music.
Review 58:After a long flight I wanted sleep and comfort, the rooms are not sound insulated, the floorboards need brass screws as they all creek, I could hear everything going on in the next room, yes everything. To top that they decided to start putting up Christmas decorations in the bar under my room at 7.20 in the morning using hammer and nails, no apology for that.
Review 59:Location is great , good bar. clean .
Review 60:Nothing to dislike
Review 61:Charming 17th Century hotel, well run, clean, staff brilliant and helpful, position couldn't be better, evening meal excellent, breakfast excellent - you won't go wrong here!
Review 62:Was a bit pricy given the breakfast was charged as an extra.
Review 63:Right in the heart of Totnes location is excellent. Variety of bars and restaurants offer goog variety at a reasonable price. Always something happening - great atmosphere. Excellent staff.
Review 64:Asked for a quiet room but got put at the very front, on the corner, overlooking the roundabout. Very light with the streetlights on all night. Some better quality curtains or a blackout blind would have helped. Some of the items at breakfast were rather cold and not of the highest quality.
Review 65:Friendly staff. Good range of food and drink. Bit stuck in a timewarp - but in a nice way.
Review 66:Absolutely nothing to dislike.
Review 67:I like everything about this hotel, that's why I have been back 3 times this year and why, when I am next in Devon, I shall head straight for the RSS. That should say it all!
Review 68:Very noisy in my room (room 6) as it was above the bar and noise from outside came in too, until 11.30pm or so. Poor service at breakfast as I came into restaurant and it was 10 mins before I even saw a member of staff. Slow WiFi connection.
Review 69:Handy location, warm welcome and good facilities.
Review 70:breakfast is certainly fine, but would have liked fresh bread rather than toast
Review 71:shower!!!! nice cosy room authentic hotel matras really nice staff great coffee at breakfast
Review 72:Bar prices a little steep.
Review 73:Clean, comfortable room; central Totnes location; excellent dinner and breakfast, the latter cooked to order rather than the ubiquitous buffet.
Review 74:Some of the bedrooms although comfortable are a little dated .
Review 75:My wife and I regularly stay at the seven stars hotel . The staff are always very friendly , the breakfasts are excellent and the hotel is in a great position for the bus and train links.
Review 76:The parking was very restricted. The pillows were quite uncomfortable.
Review 77:The location and ease to get to places. The breakfast was excellent and all staff were very helpful and polite.
Review 78:room right at top of stairs. no lifts, so had to carry everything up and down. No desk in room so could not work that well, but I was on roadside and noise was continuous with buses.
Review 79:food v good, especially breakfast, well cooked good choice friendly staff. Parking at no extra charge in v small car park. SKY Sports in bar 7 Hotel in centre of town so you could go out if you wanted to.
Review 80:The hotel was very pleasant and well situated for the town of Totnes. The room was large, comfortable and clean. Breakfasts were very good, the full English was a bit too large ! Staff very helpful.
Review 81:The room was a bit hot and when I opened the window it was quite noisy but not a big deal.
Review 82:The staff were really accommodating and friendly. The facilities were top class and I really liked the environmentally approach.
Review 83:We were there on a Saturday night and it was very busy and noisy inside and out until past midnight.
Review 84:Attractive. Excellent breakfast. And a very good dinner in the bar. Free parking in the back. Excellent location in this attractive small town.
Review 85:Although a huge selection of brochures advertising local attractions were available for popular events, maybe local bus and ferry info would have been good. I went to Ditisham and Berry Pomeroy and the SDAC which others might enjoy if they knew about them
Review 86:Ideal leisure base avoiding the bustle of the seaside during peak months. Clean, friendly and fairly priced with very good local food. Excellent breakfast choices - would have liked to stay longer and will certainly be returning.
Review 87:The hotel has a very small car park for a 21 room establishment but I was able to double park and leave my keys at reception. They moved the cars around as they needed to and I wasn't disturbed.
Review 88:The most friendly and welcoming staff that I have found anywhere in the UK. Excellent food, the dinner was cooked to my request and was exactly as I wanted it. My room was quiet, well appointed and most comfortable. I shall most certainly be staying at this hotel again when I am in the area.
Review 89:The noisey seagulls in the morning
Review 90:The Hotel was situated in the middle of town on a crossroads hand y for the town, river walks and bus services and although we travelled there by car the local bus services took us to all the places we wanted to go. The staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel satisfied our needs and more, we would certainly visit again.
Review 91:The rooms were on the main road - very noisy - could easily hear the man next door pee - sound proofing aweful. The food was average and most of the staff were surly. The place is old and the decor poor but more than this being on the second floor (premium rooms) lugging the cases up was horrendous - no lift and no help. Not a good place for elderly or for happiness!
Review 92:The breakfast staff were really lovely.
Review 93:No air conditioning and we were there on a very hot weekend.
Review 94:The staff were very friendly and helpful. Fantastic breakfast, we had vegetarians, big meat eaters and health eaters in our party and it worked really well for all of us. The rooms are individual and nicely designed. The variety of bars and communal areas is good.
Review 95:We were celebrating a family birthday. We were able to walk to my sister-in-law's house in Totnes and to the ferry terminal to go to Dartmouth for lunch. The whole family had an excellent dinner at the hotel. We had a large room, a comfortable bed and a very good shower. Some rooms are thought to be noisy, ours was quiet. Car parking was easy. The WiFi was free and worked well.
Review 96:Wine by the glass is a bit expensive, as are certain items on menu, eg steak... Car park is very small!!
Review 97:Breakfast is excellent and the waiting staff are superb. Management in evidence which makes a real difference! More expensive rooms are larger and worth the extra, but it is about time that they had air con... (Being installed??) Beds comfortable and bathroom a good size.
Review 98:Parking area small, but you can double park and leave keys with reception.
Review 99:Quirky characterful hotel in excellent position in the centre of Totnes, at the foot of the unique shopping street (independent shops, selling a mix of 'bohemian' and main stream products). I always visit Totnes when in the South West! Hotel has great bar frequented by locals (all ages). Well appointed restaurant which 'tries'. (My vegetarian was lentil burger with mashed potatoes - good attempt, but bland). Room small but adequate for an overnight stay. Comfortable bed. Small but adequate shower room. Would stay again.
Review 100:It may have been just our room, room 7, but the downside of where the hotel is, at the bottom of the main hill, meant that the noise from the bar and restaurant trade downstairs, especially at the front of the building and just below our room, was very noisy until about 12.15. The bass beat of the music from the bar directly below our room was troubling though it was switched off at 12 when we went down to talk about it. It may be that other rooms are less affected.
Review 101:It's a beautifully situated historic building. The staff were friendly and helpful, cheerful and attentive. The breakfasts were superb.
Review 102:STAINS! Large stain on dressing gown, lots of stains on bed valance, stain on one pillowcase, rip in another pillowcase. Also plaster on one wall of room badly cracked.
Review 103:Room decor, air conditioning, power shower, breakfast.
Review 104:For me, the mattress was a bit soft
Review 105:This is a very beautiful hotel, right in the middle of Totnes. The staff are really helpful and the food is great. We had a lovely big room with luxurious bathroom-- will definitely consider staying again.
Review 106:Lack of car parking facilities
Review 107:All staff were very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Fell in love with the creaking stairs and floor boards a sure sign of an old building, but restored and well looked after.
Review 108:Breakfast on the 11.06 was not up to standard as was the evening meal that day in restaurant. Portions rather small; although on next day breakfast was greatly improved.
Review 109:Location for sightseeing Curry Night excellent
Review 110:Nothing to fault
Review 111:The two night mini honeymoon was perfect, our room, the staff and food were perfect. Nothing was too much trouble. Thanks from the Leighfield's xx

Review 127:Carpark very small,
Review 128:Very friendly and helpful staff. Great location. Good food.
Review 129:The staff were very friendly throughout the hotel. The location was very central and the food was very good.
Review 130:It is an old building. Sound proofing is not great
Review 131:Comfortable and convenient for the centre of Totnes
Review 132:Expected a larger room and bathroom for the price.
Review 133:Friendly staff. Interesting building. Attractive decor.
Review 134:I only had 2 nights there .
Review 135:Not quite perfect , but wouldn't think of staying anywhere else in Totnes , always look forward to my stays there .
