Reviews for Castle House Hotel
Review 1:The hotel is a bit on the expensive side. It would be good to see prices lowered to offer better value for money.
Review 2:The room was beautifully decorated, breakfast was excellent. The hotel is also well situated in a quiet area just off the town centre.
Review 3:Our room was outstanding and the little touches like fresh fruit and complementary drinks were a delight. The hotel is in a perfect location for accessing the historic town, shops and for lovely walks along the river.
Review 4:Evening menu was the same each night could have been a little more varied. Loved the chai tea x
Review 5:We were upgraded to the Ballingham suite and it was lovely and spacious. Loved the walk in shower and the sherry. The cleaner came in x2 a day which was wonderful. Food was excellent perhaps the menu could vary a little in the evening
Review 6:Run out of milk but I had to walk over to main hotel late evening as told staff were busy. Bed in Room 24 really uncomfortable. Heating went off at night and it was cold.
Review 7:Location Breakfast
Review 8:The double bed had a join down the middle which made it uneven and quite uncomfortable.
Review 9:Staff were very friendly and professional. Lots of little touches which made the stay special. The suite was very well presented ,beautifully furnished and very comfortable. The food and service in the restaurant were excellent.
Review 10:Couldn't fault it.
Review 11:Staff courteous and efficient. Hotel spotless and very comfortable. Rooms immaculate. Food excellent, well presented and served..
Review 12:Booked a double room on booking.com and when checked in told our room price had gone up by £30 - disappointing. Room was lovely, clean and large with all modern comforts - was £195 a night
Review 13:Windows rattled in the wind but it's an old building so to be expected.
Review 14:The suite was very well lit - always an issue in hotels. It was lovely and we appreciated the little extras (fruit/port). The staff were excellent and the food was well cooked and fresh.
Review 15:Hotel superbly positioned for Cathedral and town centre. The service was professional, yet friendly - all the staff were keen to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. And the meals in the restaurant were superb!
Review 16:See opposite, a manager accepted the noise issues and appologised ,taking £ 20 off bill but should have been £230 for sleep deprivation.
Review 17:Everything except booking was for the most expensive suite and we had tomove after first sleepless night, caused by very loud boiler runningfrom 5.30 am and toilet ventilation motor loud and lasting 30 mins afterloo used. Carpeting needs replacing everywhere.
Review 18:Castle House Hotel is located in the most picturesque and cultured part of the City, with the Cathedral, Castle Green and Church Street (with it's independent boutique shops) all within a couple of minute's walk. Our room was small but beautifully decorated and the breakfast was superb!
Review 19:£210 pn Suite was large but subterranean, with only a view of the brick steps. Hotel needs to view their approach from the customers position i.e. despite being double parked had to register before directed to the carpark. Party offered exclusive use of dining room so all other booked diners demoted to the bar. The frugal approach, no personal newspapers offered, uniforms darned several times. Style over substance, nowhere for toiletries in shower, large old fashioned desk blocked window/curtains and had gizmo for dial in PC rather a charger/docking station. Concerned that hairdryer sparked when plugged in, label showed it was due for next check in 2012?
Review 20:Food. Breakfast was very good, cooked to order so came hot with well sourced items. Diner menu was pleasant mix of 'standards' and new dishes using seasonal local food, and very well executed. All the staff were professional as well as friendly and helpful.
Review 21:Posh porridge not to my taste.
Review 22:Lovely location and comfy room in the town house. Nice dinner & excellent breakfast. Very friendly staff. Yummy goodie basket in the bedroom.
Review 23:There was nothing not to like.
Review 24:Beautifully appointed suite. Quality furnishings and such comfortable beds. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast and and dining room setting was lovely.
Review 25:breakfast choice very poor, limited buffet and main courses - little vegetarian options staff service poor at breakfast , no check backs, tables slow to be cleared although dinner service and food excellent - what happened to breakfast !
Review 26:bedroom cleanliness excellent room very comfortable although lacked a few extras - no soap dish in shower, only one chair for the dining table , only one bar of soap
Review 27:No bad experiences .... As North Americans we are finding the exchange rate makes everything seem rather expensive.
Review 28:Setting is spectacular and it is easy to walk to downtown, cathedral, etc. The staff were incredibly accommodating and service oriented.
Review 29:breakfast both mornings was very different as the second chef did not pay much attention to the quality of their cooking or presentation
Review 30:Comfortable, friendly hotel where nothing was too much trouble. A real find in an old historic city
Review 31:Hardly to do with the hotel, but the front of our car was scraped while parked in the school car park overnight on 15/16 August.
Review 32:Comfort, quiet, willingness and competence of staff, charming area to sit outside, little touches like the sherry decanter (not touched!) in the bedroom.
Review 33:A truly excellent hotel - every need was catered for Staff were so friendly and helpful yet professional, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning there.
Review 34:Nothing we didn't like.
Review 35:Excellent service. Every member of staff we met were pleasant, professional and couldn't do enough to ensure we had everything we needed.
Review 36:The stairs to the top floor of the nearby townhouse were long and steep.
Review 37:Friendly welcome, dining room service, food , general ambience, the garden and being near to the great Hereford cathedral
Review 38:The staff at breakfast were not attentive, none of the juices/continental breakfasts bits were replaced, and the cooked breakfast was a bit disappointing.
Review 39:The small touches like the fruit bowl and sherry in the room. The beautiful presentation of the rooms and the common areas. The patio by the river is lovely.
Review 40:We were in a beautiful house a few yards away from the main hotel and it was raining. Other than that I have no complaints.
Review 41:Room and bathroom clean and tidy. Staff very good. Bathrobes and slippers provided as are the usual coffee and tea. Breakfast was delicious and there was plenty to choose from.
Review 42:Nothing to not like, exceptional hotel.
Review 43:As always the staff make you so welcome and can never do enough to ensure your stay is right. I was Upgraded to a larger room and what a treat, thank you.
Review 44:The poor wifi was the only disappointment though it was reset for us. I gather it's a local problem.
Review 45:We had a room in the Town House on the ground floor which had its own garden. It's only a few yards from the main building. This was a first for us, a room with a garden! We sat out with friends for drinks after a splendid dinner in the hotel. The room itself was most comfortable with complimentary water, fruit and snacks. There is a small conservatory leading into the garden. The hotel garden itself is delightful with tables next to the old castle moat. Excellent food, most friendly and helpful staff.
Review 46:The staff were extremely helpful and friendly (special mention for Ben, who arranged for me to have a snack when I got back from an event very late & had missed dinner)
Review 47:Problems with wifi in my room; staff did their best to help but internet access was far from perfect
Review 48:Room extremely comfortable, staff exceptionally helpful and breakfast delicious
Review 49:We arrived to find we had been upgraded to a Junior Suite. Fabulous room. Great food and friendly staff. Beautiful surroundings. Would definitely stay again.
Review 50:Slight rattle of sash window (in quite strong wind). Bathroom rather hot (but heated towel rail much appreciated).
Review 51:Excellent ambiance - not easy to define. Felt welcome at all times.
Review 52:The hotel is very close to the Cathedral with the town centre and lovely river walk near by. Our room was very clean with a huge comfortable bed. Flowers, fruit , bottled water and small decanter of sherry were a lovely finishing touch. The whole place was well cared for and had a friendly atmosphere. A bonus for us was watching a family of kingfishers at the moat from our bedroom window.
Review 53:"Small double" room, only really adequate for a single person.
Review 54:Good food and friendly, helpful staff. Wonderful setting beside the busy wildlife on the old moat.
Review 55:It's a bit frustrating to be asked what paper you would like and then be charged for it on the bill. The smaller, single rooms, are not always up to the standard of the bigger rooms. It can be a little stuffy in the summer.
Review 56:The breakfast is very good, in particular if the weather allows you to take in on the terrace. There are plenty of bath products (although a conditioner would be welcome), the Wifi is good, and the rooms are clean and smart with nice views from many, and little touches like free water and fruit.
Review 57:Nothing.
Review 58:Everyone very friendly, lovely room overlooking the river. Breakfast very good, all food beautifully cooked. Beds fantastically comfy. Great central location, would definitely re-visit.
Review 59:I had to schlepp my suitcase two floors on a narrow staircase, no assistance was offered. I was located in a building farther down the street, not main building, and the wi-fi didn't work there.
Review 60:The room was fantastic, spacious, comfortable, with amenities to make tea and coffee, fruit and cookies. Everything well thought of. I had dinner and lunch at the hotel's bistro, which has delicious food, attentive service and pleasant atmosphere. Breakfast was also wonderful.
Review 61:It was a surprise being housed in the 'Town House' part of the hotel away from the main building. As it was raining had to get togged up to go to breakfast.
Review 62:Location, facilities and the breakfast. The free snacks were a nice touch.
Review 63:The town house has no lift and is not adjoining the hotel.
Review 64:Excellent attitude and helpfulness of staff. brilliant location in Hereford. very good restaurant and breakfast was great. we could certainly recommend the sausages.
Review 65:No probs for us but no lift and third floor room might be difficult for people with mobility issues, although there are ground floor rooms. Also we were in the "Town House" 50 yards down the road from main building, again would only be a problem for those with mobility issues.
Review 66:Booked a small double but got a junior suite!Lively comfortable room and sitting area, large TV, complimentary fruit, crisps, biscuits, robes, slippers. SeparaTe heating controls for room and bathroom.Staff excellent, breakfast cooked to order. Good restaurant.
Review 67:I loved that when we got back from our evening out, the staff had come in and turned down our bed and put more fresh towels in the bathroom.
Review 68:We stayed in the Royal suite and it was amazing and very comfortable.
Review 69:Required to breakfast in the bar owing to work being applied in the dining room. leading to a poor breakfast, hard egg warm, cold bacon.
Review 70:Staff, room, atmosphere in general
Review 71:Enjoyed our stay immensely . Staff were excellent and welcoming . Attention to detail in the room was impressive . Very comfortable hotel in a wonderful location . A few steps from the castle , cathedral and parks and a couple of minutes walk from the charming streets of Hereford . No hesitation in returning of recommending .
Review 72:The food was OK but nothing special. Breakfast very disappointing and quite mean (for the price we paid). The steak on the first night was very chewy. After complaining about the breakfast order being wrong no attempt was made to rectify this.
Review 73:Loved the room and location. Staying at the Townhouse was unusual and pleasant. Room was slightly on the small side - especially as it was advertised as a junior suite. Staff all very pleasant. Some cleanliness issues with the shower screen were rectified without us specifically requesting it.
Review 74:only one small thing: ordered a medium steak which was well done
Review 75:Comfortable room with good facilities. Excellent décor throughout the hotel Friendly and efficient staff
Review 76:Could not get a table in the restaurant for the evening, even though I checked in at lunch time. I had a group of guests arriving for dinner and we had booked a suite, but even as a resident / suite guest the front of house would not budge on this issue at all, no flexibility, no smile, no sorry, no explanation. Rather surly attitude IMHO. Not impressed buy this at all, offered bar food...really? for VIP guests. Shame, has put me off using the place again or recommending it. Also, we arrived at breakfast and stood for several minutes with no staff in attendance, so we ended up selecting our own table and having to wait for staff to finally appear five minutes later and call them rather loudly to get any attention, they were over worked and undermanned, no attention to quality service in restaurant at breakfast time had to literally stand up to get a staff member to come and take our order, summary is that there was a lack of experience and not scanning for customers that need service, don't get me wrong, the place is lovely but service needs to be far better, more so to earn the rates being expected at this hotel and the costs of meals in the restaurant. In summary, with a less surly over confident attitude and a more "attending to your needs outlook" from the staff whether a paying resident or visiting guest - the place would immediately improve. There is little competition for a quality Hotel in Hereford, so maybe they have become complacent and over confident, which has dropped standards, maybe they were just having a very bad few days. I feel the first rather than the second of these is the case, shame, could do much better.
Review 77:Location, cleanliness, suite was lovely., needs bath robes and more coffee / drinks / consumables.
Review 78:Being in the basement room in the Town House we could hear people walking across the room above. However, advertising material warned us that the walls and floors were thin.
Review 79:Well trained staff and excellent chef. Spacious room with excellent bathroom.
Review 80:No complaints.
Review 81:We stayed the weekend for a local family wedding. Turning up late on Friday night we received a very warm welcome and were shown to our room personally by the friendly night receptionist. The suite was lovely, in the top of the town house building. Breakfast delicious.
Review 82:Fresh grapefruit at breakfast was a bit underripe and a wider selection of prepared fruit would have been good. A couple more hooks and shelves in the bathroom would also be helpful. These are very minor criticisms!
Review 83:Everything about our room, especially the comfortable sofa, the fridge and sink for filling the kettle and rinsing cups, the range of snacks and the space. The decoration of the hall, stairs and landings in the town house.
Review 84:It was a boutique hotel trying to be something it wasn't. Priced higher than it's refurbishment. Room was horrendously hot all the time with window open and couldn't sleep, had to out the fan on to sleep but that was noisy. At £150 a night you would expect aircon or for them to sort something out permanently.
Review 85:Good location nice breakfast good tea and coffee in rooms. A nice hotel in a great location but overpriced for what it is.
Review 86:A couple of members of staff let the side down as they didn't seem to have the relevant training. Twin beds zipped together are understandable but a little pointless as you can't lie in the middle. Shower had no grabrails and no shelves to put soap etc on. Seemed to be no soundproofing between floors, could have been disastrous.
Review 87:Most of the staff were fantastic. The Townhouse Suite/s were lovely, luxurious but homely, not like a hotel at all. Spacious and with extra little rooms. Loved the walk in shower. The little extras of fruit and biscuits etc were appreciated. Breakfast was faultless and delicious. We were upgraded very generously. Bed very comfy.
Review 88:Nothing
Review 89:Staff were very helpful and welcoming. Room was beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Excellent and stylish location, very close to the cathedral, river and independent cafes and shops
Review 90:cobwebs on ceiling but these were quickly removed. (it is autumn!) bar area rather stark in contrast with other lovely decorated areas
Review 91:Service and staff room and newness of being refurbished quality of room self-serve coffee etc. fresh fruit and snacks in room on arrival Ethos and decor in dining room choice of food, wine and other drinks food local produce
Review 92:The bitter on tap was not nice, we were served dinner by 5 different waiter/waitresses, the bathroom smelt of an old persons home, the town was less the quaint country retreat than I had imagined (my fault), no facilities - overall impression was that the room rate was excessive.
Review 93:A la Carte menu was good on the whole (duck starter was bland), room (except bathroom) on the whole was lovely, very comfortable and the bed was huge!
Review 94:We were upgraded. Sounds good until you realise we had to go up 52 steps to get to the room. No lift and not much fun for a mature couple. The smoked salmon with scrambled egg for breakfast had to be sent back as the fish was not edible.
Review 95:The staff were exceptional and very professional. The cooked English breakfast was as good as it gets with locally sourced items.
Review 96:Bedroom this time was rather small and bed only a 4ft which is way too small when your husband is 6ft 4 !! But when we mentioned this to reception they said to call next time and they would make sure we got a bigger bed - I booked online!
Review 97:We always arrive very late as we travel up from London. The night porter Clive is always very cheerful and happy to help - he keeps the bar open as long as you want! Brilliant location, excellent breakfast, beautifully decorated and very clean. Happy, helpful staff.
Review 98:I did not want to check out!!
Review 99:I had a small suite with my very own private garden with apple and pear trees. The staff were very polite and attentive. The decor and furnishings were classically modern and well maintained. The hotel is spotlessly clean. Very well located for the cathedral and city centre in a quiet street. An equivalent to 5 stars.
Review 100:Very good and silent location close to cathedral and castle,a very nice garden and pond, gentle and helpfull staff, high quality restaurant, very favaorable kitchen, clean rooms and bath room. I stayed in Junior Suite.
Review 101:Too hot, disturbed sleep. Towel radiator in bathroom could not be turned off.
Review 102:Very clean, good food, helpful staff. Private car park in (old) city centre location
Review 103:1) Lack of staff (and indeed, experienced staff) on the bar. Took ages just to find someone to serve me a G+T. And when I wanted a draught beer, the girl behind the bar had to be shown how to pour it by someone else. 2) Lack of attention to room detail. As the occupant of Room 9 for 4 days, I expected the coffee sachets that I had used the previous day to be replenished - they weren't. Even though I put the empty sachets in the bin, and left the box on the bed, as an indication. Bizarrely, the shower sachets WERE replaced as I used them, but not the coffee. 5) Also, when feeling hungry, and wanting something to eat from the room fruit bowl, the orange was completely mouldy underneath, and the grapes were on their last legs. I put them both in the bin. If you provide a facility, then get your staff to check them daily. In summary: Certainly NOT WORTH £110 a night. Could have booked a 10 day holiday in Spain, including flights from Manchester, with the £505 I spent with you last weekend.
Review 104:The location and proximity to the Cathedral, where I was conducting my Priory Voices choir for a long weekend.
Review 105:The room was a little dark and could have benefited from more ventilation
Review 106:The ambience and location of the hotel was wonderful. Close to Hereford Cathedral and the Mappa Mundi exhibit
Review 107:The meal in the evening was disappointing. It should not have been since the hotel claims to have a Michalin awarded chef. It was OK but nothing compared to a meal I had for the same price at Portmeirion a few days earlier.
Review 108:This hotel is in an excellent position for visiting the cathedral and town. The room was large, well appointed and very comfortable with kettle, fridge, free wi-fi, sherry and a bowl of fruit. A sofa and a comfortable chair gave plenty of options for comfort.
Review 109:We had to leave, even though we had planned to stay another night as, despite a fan provided, our 2nd floor room in the town house was much too hot to sleep comfortably. I opened landing windows as well as our room window but it was still impossibly hot.
Review 110:Wonderful location, very easy to book and no deposit needed, very helpful, well trained and polite staff in all areas, the room, although small, had been very thoughtfully designed with good storage, etc. very good food and a very pleasant outdoor space.
Review 111:Room immaculate and very comfortable. Staff attentive, smiling and friendly but not too attentive or intrusive.
Review 112:Love the friendliness of this place. It feels like home!
Review 113:Nothing!
Review 114:Everything!
Review 115:The petson I went with and the hotel itself made the stay a special one.
Review 116:The location
Review 117:we did not like being in an annexe.we also thought it was poor value for the facilities.
Review 118:breakfast very nice and freshly coked.
Review 119:The furnishings and attention to detail were excellent. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast very nice
Review 120:Upgrade to v comfortable room in annexe. Staff great. Flexible to a last minute request to accomodate an extended family meal.
Review 121:lovely spacious room with excellent shower. Food sublime.
Review 122:Staff excellent
Review 123:A brief overnight stay in a very comfortable room. Breakfast was excellent and staff both attentive and helpful. Thank you.
Review 124:a real gem of a hotel, very impressed, the staff were superb!
Review 125:Superb room with excellent facilities.
Review 126:Shower extract fan didn't work.
Review 127:Staff and facilities very good.
Review 128:This is a delightful hotel with very comfortable rooms, good food and helpful and friendly staff
