Reviews for The Merton Hotel
Review 1:Windows need upgrading as they were single and draughty, with the hotel being near a main road they also didn't block the noise too well.
Review 2:Good breakfast
Review 3:There was some noise from the nearby pubs, restaurants & road.
Review 4:The location of the hotel was ideal for visiting the County Hospital, where my partner had to unexpectedly spend the night.
Review 5:Dining room was bleak and cold. No covers on wooden tables.Only fruit available was hard Rocha pears. Only yogurts available were from Happy Shopper at 42p. No grab rails on bath. Soap dish was a scallop shell.
Review 6:Good position. Although there was no car park it was easy to find a parking space overnight outside. We wish the new owner and her family well. A few flowers, a few white wipe-down plastic tablecloths would have brightened our experience. It is value for money: I hope our comments will encourage changes, and encourage other people to try it.
Review 7:The tomato sauce bottle tops were very dirty so didn't use . They could do with cleaning the sauce bottles after use
Review 8:Clean room. Near to town and friendly staff
Review 9:A bit noisy at night, but then its a central location so it was expected. The manager is currently updating the hotel and the decor etc and bathroom is a bit shabby and tired, However the staff and the food make up for it.
Review 10:very friendly staff, convenient location and well priced. Great food
Review 11:Room 2 which we had is right onto road, so lots of traffic noise as no double glazing. Also taxi rank appeared opposite at night so lots of shouting etc when pubs closed. Ask for a room at back,of hotel.
Review 12:Excellent location for town centre. Comfy bed. Warm room. Good choice for breakfast. Nice pub downstairs serving good food. Wetherspoons opposite serving the usual.
Review 13:Our room was old and tired. There was a puddle on the windowsill where condensation had run down the window. The carpet was coming away from the wall and smelt musty. The radiator worked only intermittently and then never past tepid. After being out of our room for over 5 hours we returned to find the room not serviced, nor the tea and coffee replenished. We spent a cold afternoon in our coats, under blankets trying to keep warm. Nobody was around when we checked out so we were not able to raise these issues with hotel staff, definitley not worth £150.00. Not worth even half that.
Review 14:Location ok.
Review 15:Hotel does need some T.L.C and modernising but still clean and comfortable. parking is a short walk at the train station or across the street behind a building.
Review 16:friendly staff and a good location in city centre. Train station short distance and plenty places to eat close bye.
Review 17:Smell of damp in foyer very obvious. Paintwork grubby. Traffic noise very loud due to old sash windows. Bathroom poorly decorated. Whole place is in need of an upgrade.
Review 18:quite noisy early evening before youngster went clubbing and home at 2;30 ish toilet fans noisy from other rooms breakfast sausage and bacon black from dirty grill, had to have twin room not double that we booked
Review 19:Lighting rooms over priced no heating no vending to get drink/snacks
Review 20:Very poor my son is blind no help was given to help him lighting in the room very poor no heating on arriving no staff on duty after 10pm also heating went of @ 11pm
Review 21:No on-site parking although car parking £5 for 24 hours is just across the road.
Review 22:Friendly and helpful staff, very good location, comfortable clean rooms.
Review 23:Breakfast times were too early latest 8.30am. Check out times too early 10am. TV was too small for the room
Review 24:Ideal central location. Room was clean and tidy. Friendly helpful staff.
Review 25:The hotel was very dated, no double glazing in my room so it was noisy all night with traffic noise. I asked for a quiet room away from the road but this never happened. The shower was so poor and slow and went hot and cold with just a trickle of water. The bed was terrible and the breakfast was very poor. Overall very very poor and I would not stay again.
Review 26:The hotel was completely run down. It smelled nasty and the carpet was al least 20 years old. The breakfast was included but was not available at the time that it should have been, so we left with an empty stomach. No sorry was said, just very unpleasant words were spoken to us. We paid 110 euro per room for this compleet disaster, Please stay away from this hotel.
Review 27:The location is in walking distance from the center
Review 28:On checking out, there was confusion with the bill. Granted there was a group of us, but a lot of time was spent sorting it out and we had a train to catch, Then we found the catch had dropped on our room door and we couldn't get in to get our luggage. After various keys were tried the Manager was called and he kicked the door down. We managed to catch our train with minutes to spare!
Review 29:Walking distance from the station
Review 30:single room was musty, curtains did not block the light in the morning. TV was smallest ever seen. Grouting needed sorting out in shower.
Review 31:Location was very central
Review 32:This was not really a "bad" experience, but carrying luggage up very narrow stairs was difficult.
Review 33:Location to the train station. the city center and Hereford Cathedral was quite convenient.
Review 34:Very expensive for room, Traffic noise, coffee was disgusting, only one of two windows was double glazed, squeaking floorboards, three single beds for a room that was supposed to be a double and a single.
Review 35:Hot shower and tasty breakfast
Review 36:Being made to pay in full on arrival even though I was staying four nights and they already had my credit card details. No double-glazing so rooms at front suffer from road noise. Would have been worse if the night club across the road had been open. Meals other than breakfast are served in the bar, which is a typical pub bar with typical pub music.
Review 37:Staff very friendly and welcoming. Handy for rail and bus stations and city centre Well-cooked breakfast
Review 38:We were booked into the hotel to attend a funeral. We had emailed ahead, to let them know that it would be between 9.30-10pm when we arrived & got a reply saying that they closed at 10pm. I rang the doorbell at 9.58pm, having been stuck in traffic. We were let in by a resident, but the staff had already left, so we were not able to get into our room and had to leave. Just checked our credit card account and it looks as though we have been charged!
Review 39:Road traffic noise a real problem continuing until about 4am. Road was being dug up between 03.00&05.00hrs nothing Hotel could do about this.
Review 40:The new owners very friendly and trying hard to improve what was a run down Hotel.
Review 41:Couldn't sleep on the very uncomfortable mattress and the smell of Urine in the bathroom made us feel sick .The manager needs to go on a customer relations intensive course .
Review 42:Nothing
Review 43:On one of the days we were there, no one attended to our room. And the breakfast seemed to be on the niggardly side.
Review 44:It's handy for one of the local car parks.
Review 45:They charged a late fee for checking in at 11.30pm after my train was delayed for two hours. Breakfast was very average. Over priced.
Review 46:Location to station.
Review 47:All good
Review 48:This was our 3rd stay at the Merton but the first time under the new management,The hotels decor is a little dated in places but it is clear to see that work is ongoing to improve this,Prior to our arrival i asked for a early breakfast on the two mornings we were there and this was no problem,we had two evening meals at the Hotel and the food was very good and reasonably priced, all staff were very friendly.
Review 49:I didn't have a bad experience at all, but I felt that, whilst reasonably priced, I'd have hoped for a bit more - for example, in terms of the hairdryer that was supposed to be in the room according to the information. Breakfast was adequate, but a little disappointing in terms of choices and amount offered( 1 tomato, small number of mushrooms).
Review 50:Friendly and welcoming and also helpful staff. Bedroom was fine, although walls are thin - but that cant be helped. Overall, the hotel was not noisy, and I felt comfortable there. Good provision of local information. Excellent location for my purposes and accurately described. Breakfast was acceptable.
Review 51:Stayed last year for the Hay festival and booked again for this year. The hotel is under new management and they're doing a great job. Lovely breakfast, pleasant and helpful staff and a fantastic Sunday roast. Highly recommended.
Review 52:The Merton is situated very conveniently close to the station and the cathedral. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the food is good and the room adequate with plenty of hot water. There are tea and coffee making facilities in the room.
Review 53:Unable to book in until 1530 and after considerable travelling time to get there this was considered particularly unhelpful. No parking other than an unsecure and unsighted car park near to the bus station opposite that cost nearly £5 for an overnight charge. The Merton Hotel is tired and not that clean. The carpets are threadbare and the floorboards can be clearly seen through the carpet which is ill fittng. The person manning the reception in the morning could not be bothered to turn around (or away from the computer) to speak to us when asked a question which i found quite rude. At £88 for a one night stay, i consider the stay at the Merton Hotel extremely poor value for for money and will certainly explore other options the next time i visit Hereford.
Review 54:Breakfast was OK
Review 55:Room a little bit dingy
Review 56:Very friendly welcoming staff. Good food, cooked freshly - especially breakfast. Great location for public transport, being close to both railway and bus stations
Review 57:A family run business with the jolly locals at the bar making you feel welcome as well. Great service because the family, want you to return and I would.
Review 58:There was no wi fi in my room 8 but they knew about it and were dealing. Because the management were new they had not managed to set up kitchen for full grill menu but this was to be resolved the day after I left
Review 59:Very friendly and helpful staff
Review 60:the colour of the bathroom ahah sorry :) but appart from that everything else was great
Review 61:Me and my Boyfriend loved the hotel , great area , quiet , staff were lovely and the room was sweet and it felt from home from home , bed was comfy ;) and there was great coffee facilities hahaha, woke up early for breakfast staff were amazing and was a great selection to choose from x
Review 62:would have like someone to take my case up/down the steep stairs to my room Over 18 TV channels freely available.Should be blocked and unlocked only on request to protect minors staying
Review 63:Room lovely and warm. Staff friendly Amazing retro Avocado Bathroom Suite Spacious Dining room Breakfast cooked well
Review 64:This year when we stayed, I had a broken leg and ankle which was mending very well but it has not fully healed yet, so when I came to use the shower and had to step into the bath, I felt quite unsafe as there are no hand rails on the wall. The bath was a bit slippy so I had to take great care. Although I am by no way elderly, there maybe others like me, as well as elderly people, who may appreciate a safety hand rail on the shower/bath wall.
Review 65:Everything was excellent thank you. It was nice to see that an internal window had been put inside the original window to help keep the draught down from the bed by the window in the triple room. It certainly made a difference.
Review 66:I'm sorry to have to say this. Everything looked weary and falling apart. It smelled damp and old and was a little depressing. Even train station waiting areas look fresher than my room. The worst ever bed! It was hard and wobbly, giving an impression that you would fall off it when you moved. Turning over in bed would wake me up as the bed was so creaky. A Full English breakfast was included in price - a joke. I could not have it ‘full’ as the staff repeatedly insisted that I choose only part of it which made me feel guilty of daring to want it ‘full’. The cost of staying there is definitely not value for money. .
Review 67:Some of the staff, not all, were polite.
Review 68:Noise from back outside, but it was hallowe'en!
Review 69:Helpfulness of staff Simple uncomplicated single room Lack of loud 'musack' Good cooked breakfast value for money Good shower
Review 70:the bed was a tiny single -- suitable for a young teenager maybe, and horribly uncomfortable. the hotel has seen better days and smelt dirty, and the wifi did not work. also the toilet in my room was broken. Over-priced considering the room.
Review 71:the breakfast was ok, although the service was below average. The only good thing about the hotel is proximity to the train station.
Review 72:Bed wasn't that comfortable. Radiator valve squealed under pressure. Double glazing didn't take much sound away from road noise.
Review 73:Fantastic staff. Great food. Good location. Good hotel and value for money!
Review 74:My room number 7 did not have a shower! How can a hotel charge £62 for a room without a shower? I asked to be moved but was told the hotel was full but when I went for breakfast at 7.45am I was the only one in the breakfast room! funny that a full hotel has nobody for breakfast Stay away
Review 75:None
Review 76:We had a late arrival to the group, staff were happy to put up another bed at very short notice late in the evening. Comfortable rooms. Wholesome breakfast. Great value for money!
Review 77:The place is pretty down at heel but I could put up with this if the toilet in my en suite flushed. It didn't. That's pretty basic these days ...
Review 78:Location and price.
Review 79:Everyone was very helpful. We needed to visit a nearby country home, the office staff found the best way for us to do this plus quotes on taxis. We had to catch an early train and would have missed breakfast but they packed a beautiful breakfast for us to take with us. The bar lady was great, very friendly, this was by far the friendliest place we have stayed at during our holidays.
Review 80:Old building, you could hear your fellow guests talking and watching TV.
Review 81:Location. Between station and national bus stop. Not far from city centre. Serves well its purposes.
Review 82:The hotel room (room 23) was not clean. The bathroom was an antique disgrace with an atmosphere of ingrained filth and decay. A strange smell of toilet freshener spray mixed with what this normally masks pervaded the premises.
Review 83:The staff were very helpful and efficient.
Review 84:Room on front of hotel-noisy because had to keep window open. Busy late night with people out having fun. Decor - shabby
Review 85:Bed comfortable- nice crisp sheets Breakfast - good
Review 86:Furniture and decor rather tired and well worn but the staff obviously do their best to ensure this does not spoil the general feel of the place.
Review 87:Close to rail station, bus station and Town Center. Good "value for money" food. Comfortable bar and lounge areas. Very clean, well serviced rooms. Helpful staff.
Review 88:Not really the hotel's fault but it is opposite a club so noisy on a Saturday night!
Review 89:Lots of tea coffee and hot chocolate in the room Breakfast was great! Clean Good bar!
Review 90:Unfortunatly, being a weekend, you're not warned about the busy night club next door... Could litterally here the details of every fight, police interaction and chavtastic screaming until gone 3am!
Review 91:Friendly staff!
Review 92:The rooms facing the road are noisy at night because of the traffic. So if you are a light sleeper, ask a room on the other side.
Review 93:Their restaurant is attached to the hotel, which is sometimes convenient.
Review 94:Lack of A/C was an issue for us as Americans and it was in the middle of a heat wave so I wouldn't hold it against them.
Review 95:The staff were very nice and helpful.
Review 96:Old furniture, breakfast old style and served by staff, room was very old and needs updated. Noise outside room (alleyway used until late by a variety of people for a variety of purposes) and the alleyway and back yard was very dirty with rubbish.
Review 97:My sister and i stayed at The Merton for 3 nights. The room was a good size with twin beds, which were very comfortable. The room supplements were good,Coffee, chocolate, and tea,the bathroom supplements were good soap, showergel, shampoo. The English breakfasts were good. The staff went out of their way to help us with a problem that occured. The Hotel is in an excellent location, near the Train station, and the bus station just across the road, the City is just to the right of the Hotel, all shops ,Cathedral etc, within walking distance.
Review 98:The room was rather small with creeky floorboards and walls thin enough to hear next room's telephone conversation.
Review 99:Reception staff on arrival was excellent with our bags carried to the room. Breakfast was a well presented meal, although the dining room staff could have shown more personality.
Review 100:Staff weren't very friendly. Notices stating how hot food in the room would not be acceptable and fines would be added if discovered. Toilet barely flushed. TV remote just about worked. Shower wasn't great. Pillows were worn and uncomfortable. Ensuite was cramped and dated.
Review 101:Bed was comfortable.
Review 102:The room needs some updating. The extractor fan was faulty and the room was quite cold.
Review 103:The room was clean and in a great locality.
Review 104:Room was very cold in the morning.
Review 105:Nice place perfect for work trip.
Review 106:On a busy road so quite noisy early morning.
Review 107:Good value for money. Friendly, helpful staff.
Review 108:Nice and relaxing stay, very friendly people, will visit again.
Review 109:Excellent location for work.
Review 110:Convenient location for rail station and location of business meeting. Good price
Review 111:Rooms were extremely dated. Communal rooms were very cold. Staff weren't particularly enthusiastic about their work.
Review 112:Location
Review 113:All ggod
Review 114:Very helpful,friendly staff..thanks
Review 115:It was fine no negatives.
Review 116:Nice clean hotel, staff helpful and friendly.Breakfast fine(bit mean with bacon!)
Review 117:Paid twice for a room
Review 118:Bed very uncomfortable, very noisy at night due to location and no double glazing
Review 119:Lovely newly decorated room friendly staff and close to town
Review 120:Nil
Review 121:Great place at an affordable price.
Review 122:Really comfortable bed, heating set to just the right temp and a hor shower. Really enjoyed my stay :-)
Review 123:It is a good budget hotel in a good location. very good value for money. would stay there again
Review 124:Booked for it's central location. Clean, warm and comfortable. Staff were helpful. Breakfast was generous.
Review 125:The locatation
Review 126:Friendly staff. Great cooked breakfast. Good location , easy walk to city.
Review 127:No parking, attitude to guests, delapedated rooms, poor heating, breakfast times too restrictive, poor service.
Review 128:nothing
Review 129:There wasn't a hairdrier on the premises. There was a lot of traffic noise that made sleep difficult.
