Reviews for Penyard House
Review 1:The only down side to my stay in two occasions was the lack of Internet, they had very poor coverage over the whole hotel, when you are working away from home and rely on the Internet for business deals.
Review 2:Location is fantastic, the staff are very helpful and the hotel is very nice.
Review 3:Not a Bad experience, although we understand it is/was Christmas and New Year we where hopping for a bigger range of Bar Snacks/Food as it was very limited, Drinks also. We couldn't understand why the Flat TV screen was not on the Wall so that we could view in Comfort ?
Review 4:Very easy to find, Good Parking, Very Friendly and Helpfull Staff.
Review 5:Only one bedside table. Room was small for a double. Room overlooked kitchens and ventilation.
Review 6:Friendly staff, very good tea & coffee in room and good breakfast menu
Review 7:Beds could be more comfortable. Would benefit from a lift to all floors. May not suit people with limited mobility. Windows single glazed and steamed up limiting views of grounds.
Review 8:Lovely park grounds. Staff very helpful. Very clean and spacious room. Free wifi.
Review 9:Welcome was pleasant enough but service was poor throughout. Evening bar was not stocked adequately for expected guest numbers. Breakfast buffet hot food had dehydrated mid way through breakfast period and was not replenished quickly enough. We reported that a large bowl of fruit salad was starting to ferment. Apparently reported to the chef, but it was still left out for other guests to serve themselves. Staff were not adequately trained to listen to requests and deliver to customer basic requirements regarding tea and toast. On Sunday evening there was no meal service due to low occupancy of hotel but neither could the receptionist offer specific options nearby. When checking out, reception staff did not invite us to comment on our stay about whether everything was satisfactory, so gave no opportunity to report a failed light bulb or unsanitary drain odours eminating from the bathroom plumbing.
Review 10:Setting in grounds was pleasant and decor was tasteful and in good repair.
Review 11:The front door!
Review 12:Perfect for my work which was about a mile away. Pleasant and calming atmosphere. Nice room. Good breakfast (for me at least :-) - you might struggle if you were a veggie
Review 13:The evening meal leaves a lot to be desired, not much taste and dry.
Review 14:All the staff where very helpful, the hotel is in a central position to discover the area.
Review 15:The evening menu was rather limited, rather than a set menu it would have been preferable to have had a little more choice.
Review 16:The rooms were lovely and very spacious. The breakfast choices were very good. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 17:Poor selection of beer in the bar, gasflow only, no "proper" beer, not even bottles. The evening menus were quite limited although the bar food looked good. We ate in the local pub 5 mins walk away.
Review 18:Nice location,Nice room, well kept and comfortable. Good breakfast. We got a last minute bargain break so the price made it brilliant value, cheaper than a Travelodge with breakfast thrown in!!
Review 19:This was a last minute stop over. The general location and exceptional value made it a no brainer to stop here. The receptionist and night manager were very nice, helpful and friendly. We had a reasonable bar meal, a couple of large glasses of wine, a clean comfortable and tidy room with good facilities. Breakfast in the morning was varied well prepared and tasty. Check out was easy. Comfortable, excellent value hotel.
Review 20:none
Review 21:if the room rate is kept to around £65.00 i would use it all the time, when it goes up to £90.00 then its a bit much, with food on top. great room, nice people in the hotel
Review 22:No topsheet on the bed only a quilt and the room became very warm during the night. The room which was in the new part of the hotel was quite small with a tiny wardrobe. TV was on dressing table and covered half the mirror.
Review 23:Attractive country house hotel with lots of character. Pretty gardens. Very friendly and helpful staff. Plentiful supply of tea and coffee in the room. Good breakfast. Excellent disabled facilities with wetroom and handrails.
Review 24:The same Very poor fruit salad served for breakfast and dinner. No key provided to open Bedroom windows had to go and ask at the friendly reception. Bedrooms seriously lack the character that the rest of the property has.
Review 25:Grounds and building very beautiful & impressive. Friendly helpful staff at dinner and breakfast. Hot water in bathroom for bath or shower A Good night's rest A great experience highly recommend staying here
Review 26:There were only two people serving breakfast, which meant we had to wait.
Review 27:The bed was very comfortable and the room very clean. The gardens are beautiful. Good breakfast.
Review 28:We liked everything....very relaxing
Review 29:It was a last minute thing and when we arrived we loved it straight away...the staff were really friendly ..room was lovely and big ..nice and warm as well
Review 30:Breakfast was understaffed. Buffet breakfast a bit unappealing. No dinner available in a dining room as previously requested and agreed by staff.
Review 31:Very clean and spacious room and dining area. Bed comfy but pillows thin.
Review 32:Couldn't open bedroom windows, the t.v was a little on the small side. No lift ...
Review 33:Great hotel location Fantastic staff Food was excellent. Value for money was good. Really peaceful, relaxing hotel.
Review 34:Price of drinks extremely expensive. Could do more fruit and be more imaginiative.
Review 35:Staff were really nice and friendly. Lovely room. The location is beautiful. Bar snacks reasonably priced. Great English breakfast.
Review 36:Breakfast, although good quality when you got it. It was a little chaotic, missing items Of food buffet and cutlery. All replaced quite quickly but you needed to ask.
Review 37:Location.
Review 38:They are in the process of entering the leisure market after specialising in the corporate market. The room we had whilst clean, was quite small with no seating area as mentioned in the room spec when booking. There was a small hole behind the door where the closer had been forced into it. The Tv was smaller than the average lap top max 12". Only 1 bath and hand towel (2 guests) only hand towels available when we asked for another bath towel. Whilst the food at breakfast was good it took an age to get a table although only half full. Two staff to set tables serve toast / tea / coffee fill breakfast trays (buffet style). No further fresh fruit available at 8.50 although breakfast is served until 10am.
Review 39:The hotel building and grounds are super.
Review 40:The room we were originally given, although nicely decorated & very clean with a good bathroom, was a very small basic double room in the modern addition to the old house. It reminded us of a student room, no front to the wardrobe, a tiny tv, small double bed & just 1 bedside table & light. It was a long way from reception up several flights of stairs & no help was offered with our luggage. We asked to be moved & were given a lovely room in the main house & a very kind young lady helped us take our luggage. When we booked only 1 type of room was offered & we would not have made the reservation if we had seen pictures of the room we were originally given.
Review 41:The old part of the hotel was lovely. Good breakfast in pretty breakfast dining room
Review 42:The main light did not work in our room! The wifi did not work in our room.
Review 43:The room was clean and tidy. Cheap, value for money as breakfast was included. There was a good variety at breakfast.
Review 44:Bed was a bit narrow,WiFi feeble in room, staff enthusiastic but inexperienced.
Review 45:Spacious room, modern clean shower and bath, high quality TV.magnificent grounds, elegant house, very good dinner menu very good quality/value,also breakfast good standard.
Review 46:The quality of the breakfast was very poor. The breakfast was cold as were the plates. When the hot breakfast dishes were empty they were not replenished until the customers complained.
Review 47:A very pleasant hotel with friendly staff.
Review 48:The breakfast was cold. The room has little furniture, no where to sit other than on the bed. The hotel only seems interested in corporate customers. There is nothing for the holiday traveller in the way of suggestions/literature for places to visit. There is no reading material in any of the sitting rooms. Such a shame as these little changes could make a big difference.
Review 49:The staff were helpful and friendly. The house and grounds were lovely.
Review 50:Wifi very poor. As only operating as hotel for a few weeks the occasional slip ups of staff is unsurprising hope that time will deal with this. Be aware part of the site is a training centre for management types - although they are kept separate from the hotel guests most of the time as they have their own entrance and eating areas.
Review 51:Location - in own beautiful grounds and in a lovely area. Friendly helpful staff. Downstairs rooms - country house (although upstairs more like premier inn). I think in time this side of the business could do well. Plenty of parking, easy access to many locations.
Review 52:No wifi access in room, advertised as with wifi in room, reception told me there was a problem with it, but I suspect they just don't have it working.
Review 53:Convenient location, comfortable bed, quiet room
Review 54:Staff seemed to need better training, some seemed young and inexperienced. Maybe Mgmt. supervision needed sharpening. Seemed to be in the middle of an ownership takeover. A lift should be provided, We requested stairs to be minimal. The room allocated was on second floor. we arrived breathless! No armchair in room, and only one bedside table. We requested a change, and the receptionist found us a first floor room. This was probably due for an upgrade, but it was pleasantly large and roomy with a large comfortable bed. Again there was no armchair and only one bedside table. We found a table and chair unused in a corridor and took them in charge. We then felt much at home.
Review 55:Pleasant surroundings. Helpful staff. Clean rooms. Plenty of car parking. Bar & bar meals good. On balance value for money was reasonable, but only after our efforts improved things. We think that if various upgrades are carried out this will quickly become an excellent hotel. Beautiful grounds.
Review 56:BAR MEAL WAS FROZEN FISH NOT FRESH & CHIPS WERE NOT FRESH COOKED POTATOES BIT OF A LET DOWN FOR PRICE
Review 57:STAFF MADE OUR STAY VERY ENJOYEABLE & PLEASEANT WOULD STAY AGAIN THANK YOU
Review 58:Of the 2 rooms booked, one was not suitable standard for maintenance and cleanliness.
Review 59:Grounds and surrounds lovely. Extra rooms for informal gatherings good.
Review 60:Our room was in the business suite, quite a walk from the car and from the main hotel for meals - it was raining most of the time we were staying. Breakfast a little disorganized on our first morning. Fairly basic room with little storage space.
Review 61:Situated well away from main road, minimizing noise level. Good value fixed price evening meals, although the choice was limited. Breakfast on our second morning was much better organized, being in a large restaurant, there having been a wedding the previous day with lots of guests staying over.
Review 62:Told late for breakfast arrived 8.50 had to sit in another area (which wasn't set up) as no space in main breakfast dining area. No eating times or dining information in room - very basic.
Review 63:Location Comfortable bed Nice breakfast
Review 64:I didn't want to go home - very relaxing!
Review 65:Staff very friendly. The location very good , a grand building and a pub within walking distance. The food was good and the price very reasonable.
Review 66:beds uncomfortable, breakfast we were put in the bar for some reason although tables in restraint? bar tables far too small to have breakfast on. Staff require training and management not seen in restraint. breakfast in thee different locations in three days? unable to get onto wi fi? rooms tired needs TLC
Review 67:The Hotel was fine. Grounds were good.
Review 68:Still feels a bit like conference centre. Bed was soft and springy
Review 69:Staff working hard to convert this back into a nice hotel. Still some way to go but have no doubt they will get there. Lovely grounds. Decent breakfast.
Review 70:My booking was not recorded even though I had confirmation from Booking.com. I was immediately stressed at the outset but luckily you were not full. I had to complain about the amount I was asked to pay at check out. Room service was not what I would accept. Premier Inns were superior.
Review 71:Staff were helpful and friendly.
Review 72:The gym was in darkness and no staff was on hand. No sign of lift. So if you have problems with stairs ask for a ground floor room.
Review 73:Staff were helpful. Room was spacious. Convenient location for Ross-on-Wye
Review 74:The hotel looks very "tired" and dated. The ground floor facilities were adequate though dated but the bedrooms are in need of serious investment. No bedside lights, just main light in the centre of the ceiling; stained walls in need of redecoration and bathroom clean but again, very old!
Review 75:Staff very young but nevertheless very helpful!
Review 76:Restaurant closed due to technical problems in the evening but they knew it was ok for breakfast the next day ..seemed to be more of a fact that not many patrons or no chef..
Review 77:Quiet
Review 78:The showers need significantly more power.
Review 79:Beautiful building set in lovely grounds. Lovely staff. comfortable attractive lounges. Very comfortable room with plenty of space.
Review 80:Ubcomfortable bed and pillows. Tv and tables inside the room are not safe.Wifi connection is limited to room.
Review 81:Staff members are very welcoming friendly and accommodating.
Review 82:Found it strange that upon arrival, reception didn't inform us about breakfast times and location, dinner times and location, where the bar was, the gym. We were checked in but none of the information I've just mentioned was given leaving you having to seek it out. All of that should be volunteered to every guest checking in, so you don't have to come back with questions. There are a number of sitting rooms in the hotel but nothing to do in them, e.g board games, a communal tv, maybe a collection of books to read. I'm wondering whether this hotel is primarily for conferences as there's no life in the evening, for the family staying for example.
Review 83:The hotel and grounds are beautiful. This is the best thing about this hotel. Nice rooms, lovely reception and entrance hall. The grounds are a joy. This property has something really nice about it. The bar food in the evening was excellent and nicely served. Similarly, breakfast was delicious and nicely served, really liked the coffee machine allowing you to choose your coffee. Staff at breakfast were fine, as in the bar. Reception staff leave something to be desired. They were ok checking us in but honestly, volunteer information, it should all come as standard and how about, thanking us for our stay and was everything to your satisfaction?
Review 84:The barman was not very good at producing a coffee. We waited 15mins and then had to ask him if it was coming. He gave no apology. Breakfast was cooked beautifully but was cold. Staff very helpful but the manager took our plate away, supposedly to heat it up in the microwave. He obviously didn't because when we asked where our meal was, we saw him give it the waitress and it was still stone cold. A real shame because it did look so good.
Review 85:Our room was cosy, comfortable and very quiet.
Review 86:No room service available. There was confusion with my room which meant I received no maid service which left me with dirty towels everyday. Only one bedside table and breakfast was cold on one of the mornings.
Review 87:Nice location with pleasant staff.
Review 88:The Sunday Morning crush for Breakfast. Inevitable really, everyone wanting a lie in! Staff flustered. Monday Morning was fine, hardly any guests, so we were all in the small restaurant area, where we could order our breakfast at seat (Sunday it was help yourself)
Review 89:We stayed in room 9! Having read some of the reviews, we thought we were going to be in for a noisy night. As it turned out it was fine. There was no wedding party on and the place was chilled and relaxed. Never heard much noise as a result. The room does not have a good view of the gardens, being at the rear, but We were there only as a base to visit the local area. The floorboards under the carpet are uneven and quite noisy. It appears the same could be said of the room above us and the stairway to the reception area. However, the Hotel does feel quite upmarket. The room was spacious, Had the tea/coffee facilities as advertised. Also had a hair dryer and Iron / ironing board.. Very clean, Nice shower too. Aside from the 'odd' member of staff, They were were great, Mostly young and you got the impression some had been taken on from College, learning the trade. very polite though and apologetic if they had made an error with an order. In the bar, I stayed on the 'Butty Bach' bottled beer, due the Becks Vier (draught) was off (literally) . We would stay again. There is a very nice pub next door that does food (if you fancy a change) and they Sell 'Bass' Ales. The Breakfast fayre at the Hotel was fine on the whole. Sausages were very nice!
Review 90:This is an establishment that has "Lost It's Way". It was a training venue then a wedding venue and now an hotel but it is poorly organised and the information given to guests totally inadequate. E.G. verbally informed by receptionist when enquired that breakfast was 0800-1000, but it was actually 0700-0900 so nearly missed out there!; some other guests did! At the weekend breakfast was buffet style in a large pleasant dining room - proper tables and chairs, table cloth etc. and hot servery with plenty of choice, and all good. Weekdays it was served plated, no choice and very poor selection - understaffed and in a small under provisioned dining room.
Review 91:Location, staff and cleanliness all good, as was breakfast provision at the weekend, served in a different dining room than weekdays.
Review 92:The whole breakfast experience was a disaster and ruined our weekend. I will not waste the space available to list the events that made it such a poor service.
Review 93:Lovely friendly helpful staff
Review 94:Bedroom looked very sparce i.e. only one bedside table & Chair (these were supplied with extra pillows when requested). No Bath Robes as stated and WiFi only available in Reception/Bar NOT as stated. Water Pressure in Bathroom was very poor. Dinner menu good for 1 night but same menu used on every night with only 5 choices!!!!! therefore we went elsewhere. Room Keys did not work on Days 2 and 3 meaning long walk from 2nd Floor to Reception!!
Review 95:Location and Look of house as driving up drive and original part of house. Beautiful grounds. Breakfast was very good and Dinner on 1 night was acceptable. Staff helpful but on occasion did not know what was what (discovered subsequently that property has been taken over and is in transition)
Review 96:Had to move to another room due to plumbing problems, second room wasn't as good as first room so we asked to be moved to a room at the front, which was duly done. Lovely gardens which would benefit from some nice tables and chairs or at least benches, on which to relax.
Review 97:It was local to places of interest. Pleasant location and staff were helpful an friendly.
Review 98:Appears to be set up for functions & corporate events. unable to pick up free Wi-Fi in bedroom.
Review 99:Only just opened as a hotel nice grounds , nice area, all new fittings,& very clean. I would expect prices to rise when established
Review 100:No internet access in rooms Bed too soft and uncomfortable No air conditioning or fan in room
Review 101:Staff very friendly and helpful Restaurant food was very good Bar prices very reasonable
Review 102:Weak dinner menu (informed they were between chefs). Cramped bathroom. Needs a minor renovation and repairs.
Review 103:Convenient location for intended purpose. Spacious room. Nice grounds and quiet. Staff friendly and helpful.
Review 104:No consideration by staff for customers. We stayed in room number 9 and were kept awake all night by staff in the office below us talking all night and playing music. Our complaint wasn't dealt with very well either.
Review 105:Lovely setting and facilities were very good.
Review 106:Once the hotel has been upgraded it will be beautiful. Only been in the hands of the current owner for one month so needs a chance to improve which I am sure it will.
Review 107:Room was sparsely furnished. A small double bed which wasn't very comfortable. Only one bedside table in the room which is very inconvenient.
Review 108:Nice grounds and good parking
Review 109:Room was a little sparse ie. no lounge seating and only 1 bed side cabinet. Staff apologised and assured me that it will be sorted ( room No 21 )
Review 110:service was excellent room was spotlesly clean. Staff , grounds and location were excellent. Would re-visit
Review 111:Only one bedside table and light. Paintwork to exterior needs maintenance.
Review 112:Friendly helpful staff. Good grounds well maintained. Good gym with modern equipment.
Review 113:Breakfast was not very hot, no information regarding the facilites, has a gym but we weren't told, emailed before I went but didn't receive a reply
Review 114:Staff helpful and friendly room comfortable
Review 115:The rooms are very dated, the upkeep of rooms needs attention peeling paint on radiator and peeling paper on walls
Review 116:The location was perfect for visiting surrounding towns , hereford, ross, Monmouth
Review 117:Very basic room.
Review 118:Very good value we paid 60 pounds for b and b. Would not of liked to pay more for our room. Other rooms are nicer and more money. Very clean. Good food.
Review 119:nothing
Review 120:everything it was a lovely place to stay
Review 121:In need of some redecoration
Review 122:Good value, comfortable room
Review 123:Great staff spacious bedroom nice location
Review 124:The Penyard House is a beautiful and nicely decorated hotel. Very comfortable, excellent breakfast and a helpful staff. Excellent value.
Review 125:Friendly staff, room was spotless, beautiful location, would be a fabulous venue for a wedding. Plenty of choice for breakfast.
Review 126:Tables left uncleared in the evening, staff did not welcome in as I arrived.
Review 127:Very pleasant friendly staff. Lovely immaculate rooms. Nice atmosphere. Ample parking. Reasonable price.
Review 128:The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble
Review 129:Excellent location near the end of the M50.
Review 130:Main entrance a bit hard to spot in the dark.
Review 131:Friendly, professional staff; great food. Good sized clean room. Lovely and quiet.
Review 132:None
Review 133:Everything
Review 134:The total tranquillity great place
Review 135:Bar menu. Food was all deep fried and tasteless
Review 136:Beautiful building within close reach of the Brecon Beacons.
Review 137:The staff were 10/10 Laura was very helpful beautiful place will defiantly stay there again loved it staff were fanastic
Review 138:Excellent value for money, staff were brilliant, really helpful and the breakfast top notch.
