Reviews for The Hostelrie at Goodrich
Review 1:The charming staff. The charming location, The delicious food. Proximity to Cardiff for the Rugby and the wonderful result for our team made this a dream stay !
Review 2:That we couldn't have stayed longer!!! Relaxing and comfortable.
Review 3:Everything about our stay was amazing from the friendly welcome to the warm farewell. Beautiful spacious warm room with excellent shower. Lovely biscuits and drinks in lovely little hard. Great toiletries and big fluffy towels . Food in the restaurant was outstanding. As vegetarians we often find the menu limited. We were able to sample four different mains over our stay- the vegetable dauphinois was outstanding with a subtly flavoured mushroom sauce. The brioche and mandarin twist on bread and butter pudding was fantastic.
Review 4:Bedrooms a little dated, but comfortable and clean
Review 5:Fantastic food and service, host was excellent, friendly, informative, relaxed. Perfect environment and atmosphere.
Review 6:None
Review 7:Excellent value and really good location for us visiting nearby national trust and heritage sites. Goodrich castle really enjoyable and Raglan castle fantastic.
Review 8:Our room was above the bar so it was rather noisy up until midnight. Breakfast was disappointing - no Weetabix & boiled egg was underdone.
Review 9:Friendly staff, nice coffee.
Review 10:Nothing
Review 11:We liked everything the great staff the friendliness and the accommodation. All though we only had a standard room it was very comfortable and all what we required.
Review 12:The Hostelrie is in the beautiful village of Goodrich, it is comfortable, clean and the staff were very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. We were a party of 7 and everyone enjoyed their time there, and the breakfast was very good. My son had his wedding reception right next door to the pub so it was a brilliant choice for us.
Review 13:Fantastic food, top class service, clean rooms. Very friendly atmosphere. Great hosts, nothing too much trouble. Enjoyable badinage. Real value for money. The breakfast really sets you up for the day.
Review 14:Curtain pole in bedroom broken at one side reported it nothing done so difficulty drawing curtains for fear of bringing the raul down Breakfast was a disappointed after such a good dinner
Review 15:Staff brilliant,dinner brilliant,
Review 16:The staff were very friendly and helpful, it had a good relaxing atmosphere. Its countryside position was good but also a few minutes drive off the main A40. The food was excellent and reasonably priced.
Review 17:was situated in a lovely village ideal for touring the local area. Staff very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Room extremely clean and tidy lovely fluffy towels Breakfast excellent. We will definitely return if in area
Review 18:The pillow
Review 19:Fabulous location, beautiful old building full of character, staff were super - friendly and efficient - and the food was absolutely amazing. Family room was great.
Review 20:All was good..
Review 21:Staff were great, freindly and knowledgeable, beer garden very pleasant and nicely laid out... breakfast was good quality and adequate, (coffee not to everyone's taste) a good pleasant atmosphere all round.
Review 22:The immediate friendliness and hospitality of Ayrton and Andy, the fabulous building, our room with beautiful furnishings and quirky atmosphere in the old building, the location of course and the fantastic food in the restaurant. We will most definitely be back as we love the Forest of Dean and want to enjoy walks from the Hostelrie. Our meals on both evenings in the restaurant were of superb standard, who needs to go anywhere else.
Review 23:This is a lovely place to stay. Friendly welcome and service, comfortable, spacious room (we stayed in the twin room which is bigger than it looks on the photo), lovely restraunt with proper home-cooked food and all in a lovely setting.
Review 24:Friendly, welcoming staff. Great food. Comfortable, clean room though furniture and décor basic in the room we occupied (can't comment on other rooms).
Review 25:we liked the location, pretty garden, very helpful staff especially Adam who made lovely fresh mint tea for Karen the daughter when she felt poorly both the guys were very helpful with our cases lovely place to stay.
Review 26:Nothing to not like :-)
Review 27:Excellent value in a beautifully renovated old building. We had an excellent sandwich in the afternoon and the breakfast next day was also delicious. Very friendly staff and lively location. Lovely weekend. Many thanks.
Review 28:We had a great stay here, staff very welcoming and breakfast and lunch was beautiful, had an amazing night sleep too. This is a beautiful place to stay, the building and gardens are worth a visit alone!!!
Review 29:The free WiFi and mobile phone reception was poor but did not stop us enjoying our stay.
Review 30:The location was perfect and quiet. The staff was very friendly and helpful, they made us feel very welcome which made our stay more enjoyable. The food was excellent, maybe a little pricey but was worth every penny in fairness. The room we stayed in was very clean and bed was comfortable too. Will definitely stay at this lovely place again in future.
Review 31:The seating in the bar was all a bit hard and uncomfortable ?.. Shame as this was the only let down !
Review 32:The welcome from the beginning through to departure ... All very friendly approachable and welcoming ...lovely choice of beer and cider in the bar ...very clean and the rooms were well designed and presented !... I'll be recommending it and returning myself !... Great breakfast
Review 33:Welcoming inn/hotel handy for Goodrich castle, our reason for going. Would stay again for longer period as a base for touring/visiting other places in the area.
Review 34:No bad experience just can never find a confortable bed.
Review 35:Very helpful staff, lady at reception offered change of room for my elderly father as found stairs difficult at no extra cost.
Review 36:Bed a bit small, wifi a bit hit and miss, no telephone reception, but not a big deal.
Review 37:Staff very friendly and helpful, excellent food, and friendly locals in a very comfortable bar. Quiet and relaxing location.
Review 38:Beds too soft 'boingy' and overall the room was tired and felt could do with a spring clean i.e. pulling the furniture out (I only comment as I dropped a lip salve behind the bedside table and saw the debris/dust behind).
Review 39:Staff are helpful, hardworking and aim to make sure your stay is great. Also, the food throughout our stay was delicious.
Review 40:It seems very petty but the breakfast toast was very hard and dry.
Review 41:My husband particularly enjoyed his beer and full english breakfast (not at the same time !) We had a lovely room, Coppett, nice toiletries, comfortable bed and room, great view of the hill.
Review 42:Unfortunately the wifi was not very strong upstairs in the bedrooms. The shower in one of our rooms was either burning hot or freezing cold. After complaining about the shower and a bedside lamp not working after night 1 they were not rectified. The housekeeping did not happen in all our rooms either. We had wet towels left on the floor as they had been left; a bed was not made; a glass was not cleared away; we were not told about a party directly below our rooms that went on until after midnight and prevented us from sleeping until it had finished. On a couple of occasions the car park was full so as residents we could not park in the car park and had to go on the road. The other thing that was a shame was that there were no comfy seats to just sit on in the bar area. You don't want to spend all your time in your bedrooms but want sofas to sit on in a busy area. Having said all this - the issues were sorted out and we had some money knocked off our bill. It is a shame though as it was a nice guesthouse / hotel.
Review 43:The building was nice and had a lot of character. The staff were friendly but were a little short on the ground. The location was good.
Review 44:The restaurant was closed but the bar food was very good
Review 45:Visit to the castle and great walk on Coppett Hill (the landlord Ayerton gave us directions, including his own handdrawn map)
Review 46:TV. Very small and badly positioned. Not a major problem for us.
Review 47:Room, food, VERY clean, staff. Small and friendly. Would be happy to return or recommend to family and friends.
Review 48:Not much! Internet occasionally dropped, but not what you visit such a lovely place for!
Review 49:Food excellent, not too much trouble to adapt for dietary purposes, staff very helpful and welcoming.
Review 50:All good!
Review 51:Lovely warm place to stay in a lovely little village. The castle is only 15 minutes walk away and very worth a couple of hours visit. The hotel food is great. Lovely cosy place, great value for money.
Review 52:We can't think of anything!
Review 53:Great location, building of character, comfy bed, space in the room, food tasty, very lovely breakfasts and a friendly laid back atmosphere.
Review 54:Accommodation was a bit basic, but not really a complaint - suited us perfectly!
Review 55:The staff, the food, the location, the welcome, the building itself - all wonderful. It was both child and dog friendly, and at a really reasonable price - perfect!
Review 56:Just a couple of very minor points. The wifi did not work in the room we occupied and be aware that mobile phone reception may be hit an miss dependant upon provider.
Review 57:Located in a small country village with few local amenities, the Hostelrie was a residence of character which provided all you needed to act as a base to explore the local of the Forest of Dean. With sizeable bar stocked with a variety of ale it offered an excellent menu of locally sourced produce. There is ample hotel parking available.
Review 58:The water pressure was terrible in the first room we stayed in, but after switching room it was much better! Only negative about the place.
Review 59:Great food, comfortable beds, friendly staff, and decent location!
Review 60:No mobile phone signal. WiFi worked in the public areas but not in the room.
Review 61:Friendly welcome, helpful people, attractive and comfortable room, good bar service. Good value. Beautiful area, though I wasn't there long enough to take advantage of it.
Review 62:Warm and friendly staff. Very accommodating. Us and our 2 dogs made to feel very welcome. Good central location for exploring the best of the Wye Valley. Great walks right from the front door. Really nice breakfasts and evening meals. Good atomosphere in the bar and a great selection of drinks. A popular place, even with the locals. Good, comfortable accommodation.
Review 63:Booked fairly last minute but what a great find. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome, couldn't fault it in any way. Lovely hotel and location, great staff and food and better still dog friendly. Well worth a visit!
Review 64:Breakfast wasn't brilliant. We had the full English both days because there didn't seem to be any other choice. Second day the mushrooms were missing and the sausage cold and undercooked. The sausage was replaced by a smaller still undercooked sausage. There was a choice of cereals in kilner jars but nothing available to serve them with, when we saw a guest help himself by scooping cereal out with his hands we decided not to have any.
Review 65:Bar staff and the locals were all very friendly and welcoming. Evening meal was delicious but a bit pricey. We had a twin room that was spotlessly clean, we loved the wonky floors and doors and the gothic windows. Beds were super soft and comfortable. The village and area was a perfect base for our weekend stay. If there was more breakfast choice I'd probably give this stay a 10/10.
Review 66:No internet in our bedroom. Would have liked more comfortable chairs in our room and a little larger T.V. Otherwise no complaints.
Review 67:The owner was a very pleasant and hard working young man. Convenient for some lovely places to visit. Good garden area for sitting and relaxing. Very nice food.Good parking.
Review 68:We could only stay one night :(
Review 69:Wow, loved this place, I cannot fault this hotel, the room was lovely, very comfortable, large and plush. The owner could not do enough to make our stay comfortable and to accomodate our needs. We had an evening meal in the bar which was superb. Our bikes were stored securely and breakfast was set out early to help us to get on our way. This place is a little gem set in the most idealic surroundings, I would definately stay again as this was the best accomodation of our whole trip.
Review 70:A great hotel and restaurant situated in a nice quiet country village that close to the Forest of Dean and is within easy reach of a good number of attractions and places to see.
Review 71:There was nothing I disliked.
Review 72:The food was excellent, the staff friendly and helpful. The location was idyllic and peaceful. It was the ideal place to 'get away from it all'. Will definitely visit again and soon.
Review 73:Key to room a bit awkward but nothing significant
Review 74:Very friendly and helpful staff. Good location. Excellent food and great atmosphere in the evening.extremely dog friendly.
Review 75:Nothing at all !
Review 76:Friendly and helpful staff, clean and uncluttered room, Great breakfast and superb evening meals available. A great area for walking or just relaxing. Real value for money.
Review 77:Room over bar was noisy Asked for sheet & blankets rather than duvets. Got duvets, but no explaination.
Review 78:Situation. Choice of Ales Menu - frehly cooked
Review 79:Wifi did not work in room, and was a bit too noisy in the lounge to be able to work.
Review 80:Venue was superb, very quiet and beautiful area. Great welcome when we arrived, and dinner very good.
Review 81:Nothing to dislike
Review 82:The friendliness of the staff, the good food, excellent breakfasts freshly cooked. General location of the hotel for our purpose. Would certainly stay there again
Review 83:I am a very fussy client, but looking through some of the previous reviews for this hotel a minority of people appear have unrealistic expectations. Yes, expect perfection at the Dorchester or Claridges but not in rural Herefordshire for a very reasonable ~£100 per night! Get real....sometimes things aren't as you make out - for example my bed was too hard and I slept poorly as a result, but it won't stop me booking again! Cm on recognise the good points...There are plenty here!
Review 84:A late booking due to a change of plan, but what a find! Full marks from me for having a single occupancy rate rather than ripping me off for a double room rate! Peaceful location, lovely welcome for my black lab, all meals were lovely especially the full English breakfast, good selection of real ale, pleasant staff, clean adequate room, good wifi.
Review 85:Nothing really
Review 86:situation, ancient building in centre village. Lots of atmosphere and friendly competent staff. Good value for money. dinner and breakfast good standard
Review 87:The continental breakfast was a bit measly. It was only cereal, jam and juice. Bring your own fruit if you are a health freak like me. The English Breakfast was very good however.
Review 88:The location of Goodrich is wonderfully placed for walking in the region. It is surrounded by beautiful hills and also quite close to the river Wye, which can be approached from various angles. Try walking towards the Youth Hostel there is a lovely walk from there which takes you to Symonds Yat...also, the village has good bus connections to Ross, Hereford and Monmouth. The Hostelrie itself is a cosy and pretty building. It is well maintained and clean with all you could need from holiday accomodation. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed and the staff extremely helpful.
Review 89:A little difficult to get to on the weekends. The train station on had one taxi and someone else got it. We were fortunate to have someone offer us a ride to the Hostelrie or we might not have been able to get there. (But once there, it was totally worth the effort to get there!!!)
Review 90:Very nice staff. A few minutes walk to the Goodrich Castle, a must see if you are there. It was just as pictured and described. A thrill to be there and the staff was a bonus.
Review 91:An occasional, little intermittent noise could be heard from our bedroom, probably a kitchen ventilator, but did not bother us.
Review 92:This is a beautiful old building, something like a grand old vicarage from bygone days. The garden is stunningly lovely in the midst of wonderful countryside; the beauty of this location cannot be too highly praised, it was a new experience. We were fortunate too with the glorious weather. Monmouth and Ross are nearby, pretty, lively places, definitely worth visiting, and you can relax and enjoy the lovely River Wye. The hotel was comfortable too, friendly staff, excellent breakfast,a nice bar and restaurant
Review 93:We would have preferred a queen size bed - the standard double is not as comfortable for us now we're older!
Review 94:The hotel is situated in a lovely little village with wonderful walks. It is a real country pub with good ales and cider. We were very impressed by the excellent dining - nice menu and all presented and cooked to perfection. Our best meals so far on our trip.
Review 95:leaving ,it was a shame we didnt book longer
Review 96:from checking in to checking out staff were friendly and very helpful room was clean and comfortable food was excellent ,
Review 97:The shower was poor. Very hard to get the right temperature. Either boiling hot or freezing cold. Bed wasn't the best, matress was uncomfortable.
Review 98:Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Location was brilliant. Close to the Castle and Symonds Yat. Good food and drink, breakfast was lovely and all good value.
Review 99:The room was a bit too hot, and the pillows could have been a little more squishy. Those really are the only things I could think of!
Review 100:Food was excellent, real quality and value we could not resist a full slap a meal! Also the attention to detail and the friendliness of the staff was top-notch. The room was very well equipped and the bathroom excellent.
Review 101:All terrific
