Reviews for Castle Lodge Hotel
Review 1:rooms were cold especially to dine in owner brought fan heaters in to warm room up breakfast on new years day 8am till 9.30pm a bit early
Review 2:nice oldy wordly building lots of character.
Review 3:A lovely stay at this hotel. Room and bathroom was beautifully furnished. Toiletries were of a fine quality. No noise at all coming in from the main road so a peaceful nights stay was had. Very friendly staff that are also helpful. A roaring fire was a welcome on new years eve in a nice cosy bar area. Would recommend this hotel to anyone
Review 4:Our bed had a bit of a dip in the middle but not too bad.
Review 5:Rooms are clean and well equipped, with nice bathrooms and modern beds. Plenty of hot water and friendly staff. Breakfast was excellent!
Review 6:If I had to comment on anything negative, then a jug in the bath would have been nice for washing hair. But everything else was lovely
Review 7:The food at this hotel, was absolutely fantastic! Wide range of choice, perfectly cooked, the lava pudding was out of this world!
Review 8:Stayed here while on a business trip, this was one of a very few hotels with availabilty on that particular occasion. Now i know why it still had availability. Very odd layout to room i was given, narrow stairs to a third floor with bathroom up a further stairway, the room had previous occupants in the form of woodlice and a very low cieling which suited the woodlice but not me.
Review 9:this was one of a very few hotels with availabilty on that particular occasion. Thats the only positive
Review 10:One room had a bath rather than shower.
Review 11:We were made to feel very welcome. Comfortable rooms and very good breakfasts and dinners. Overall extremely impressed.
Review 12:there was to not like
Review 13:The owner was very helpful, the room was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. Had a really good nights sleep, The break fast was good.
Review 14:The room & bathroom, including the bedding, linen and furnishings, were all tired & in need of refurbishment. For somewhere with an apparently good reputation for its restaurant, the breakfast was at best indifferent.
Review 15:Friendly and helpful owners. Easy to find and convenient.
Review 16:Nothing really apart from a bit of dust on the lamp shades
Review 17:We had a nice stay. The decor is excellent but the building is a bit tired. Its just off the main A road so could be noisy. It isn't suitable for disabled guests as lots of stairs. Good menu. Great wedding venue. Would stay there again. Character building with boutique rooms. Good bar.
Review 18:Would have liked hairdryer in room. Room needed lick of paint and maybe bit more colour.
Review 19:Breakfast very enjoyable and value for money. Communal areas very smart and cosy.
Review 20:The staff weren't very helpful, there was no shower in our room. We asked about anywhere to go for dinner on Saturday night and the man on site was unhelpful, saying we would be lucky to find anywhere to eat at 9.30 at night. This obviously wasn't true as we did find somewhere in the town
Review 21:My boyfriend enjoyed the Werther's Original toffees in the room
Review 22:More attention is needed to which table has been waiting longest to order cooked breakfast!
Review 23:Good breakfast with the best smoked salmon I have ever tasted! Cosy hotel, old fashioned but with a charm of its own. Enjoyed a drink in the garden.
Review 24:They did run out of the alcohol we were drinking BUT Steve did go out of his way to get something as a substitute. Which in my opinion is a great thing to do!
Review 25:The service from Steve and Georgina was fabulous, the food was outstanding, neither could do enough to help you!
Review 26:There was a problem with the radiator in room 5. The weather was really hot and yet the radiator was on and could not be turned off. Result was 2 uncomfortable night's sleep. Problem was fixed for last night's stay.
Review 27:Breakfast
Review 28:The room and hotel needs updating. Carpets on the walls, pinky bathroom suite... The house is next to a dual carriage way so can get a bit noisy. The price was a bit high but then it is in a popular tourist spot. The bed was probably just double and so we didn't get much sleep.
Review 29:We actually liked the small hotel in a way and had a good time there. But have to be fair to other hotels we visited in the past. It was quirky. There was a nice walk to town along the river so in a nice weather that's a plus.
Review 30:A street light outside the bedroom window. We didn't spit the blackout blind until the morning - there is one
Review 31:Slough our booking had not come through from Booking.com for some reasons our hosts found us a room and provided v friendly service
Review 32:Nothing
Review 33:felt like home. Food was fantastic. No disappointments at all. Wifi signal in room was poor but wasn't worried myself, it's nice to get away from constant emails.
Review 34:Bathrooms are not all fitted with a shower, due to age of building, but plenty of piping hot water for bath.
Review 35:Relaxed informal atmosphere, friendly host. Excellent evening meal, which we would have had again 2nd night if not already committed elsewhere. Quirky room layout was fun (room 9).
Review 36:Nothing at all
Review 37:For us the hotel was in an ideal location, if you want to travel into Ross On Wye, its a lovely 10 minute walk along the river, or you can go via the main road. Food is the restaurant was superb, owner, Steve, very professional, cordial and a top knotch host.
Review 38:We made a last minute booking online and arrived approximately 15 minutes after making said booking. Although we must have come as a bit of a shock to the staff as it was about 8:30pm they were really relaxed and friendly. We had an evening meal which was really nice. The room was lovely and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was lovely, full English, just what we needed to start the day!
Review 39:The breakfast choice, the choice of the dinner menu (blackboard) and the quality of home made food on offer was more than we expected particular when compared with what is on offer from some of the national chains of budget hotels. When we decide to revisit the Wye valley in the future, there is no question as to where we will be staying.
Review 40:We stayed for just one night as it was a stop off point for us. It was easy to find, staff were friendly and food was great too. The room is all you needed to be honest, comfy bed and nice bathroom. Pleasant stay overall.
Review 41:We initially went there because the location was convenient. But we returned because the staff are friendly and the food at dinner is fantastic, especially the steak.
Review 42:What's not to like?
Review 43:Early arrival but warm welcome. Log fire plus warm radiator next to our table..All food freshly cooked. Nothing too much trouble. Steve and Georgina genuine and friendly. Loads of hot water. Bedroom cosy but roomy and full of character. Breakfast excellent. 10min pleasant walk to town centre. Lovely scenery – between the Malverns and the Welsh Hills.
Review 44:Our fourth trip to Castle Lodge where we were welcomed on our annual visit to the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival. Our needs were cared for and meals willingly provided at our erratic return times from concerts. With food as served here, quality wine at fair prices and log fires, who would eat out. Georgina and Steve are professional, knowledgeable and kind hosts.
Review 45:The cost compared to other accommodation was poor Breakfast additional cost even though I only had egg and bacon still cost £6.00. No heating in the evening. Water took at least 5 mins to come through hot. Towels were grey in colour in stead of white and rough enough to use as sandpaper. Decor in room was awful. Won't be hurrying back.
Review 46:Musty old smell as soon as you walked up the stairs. Wash basin cracked and overflow filthy. Hot water took an age to come through. skirting boards grubby. If ever in the area again would pay the extra for the Premier Inn just up the road.
Review 47:Good location. Comfortable beds
Review 48:A bath instead of a shower in our room but this is due to be upgraded shortly.
Review 49:Traditional owner run inn. Wonderful food and drink, comfortable rooms and Steve, mine host, a great character. Really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend.
Review 50:The owners are lovely, very helpful and chatty. The lodge has loads of character. I understand from locals the food is excellent but we arrived after the kitchen closed. Breakfast was fabulous. Easy to find in an awful rainy night warn cosy and we will return.
Review 51:a minor criticism but one the current owners are planning to do something about, is an update for the bathrooms which although adequate are a little dated. This would not put me off though from staying at this charming little family run Hotel.
Review 52:The fact that nothing was too much trouble for the staff & owners to accommodate our every needs; Fabulous locally sourced produce & the food cooked to perfection. I have travelled & dined all over the world & the food here is as good as it gets !! What a little gem we had unearthed here, I wonder if the locals know just what great food & service they have on their doorstep.
Review 53:If these people are getting ready for a wedding function don't expect any hospitality! On arrival no food available due to wedding preps . No knowledge of local inns where food may be available & to be truthful a feeling of not being interested anyway. Local pubs stop serving by 9pm So driving to the nearest beefeater is your only option . There is a distinct impression that a guest is a monetary necessity as opposed to a welcome guest at a hospitality venue . Perhaps hospitality is something the management here might do well to remember that's the industry they are in.
Review 54:A clean room, comfy bed & nice bathroom
Review 55:The bath room was a bit out dated! Haven't seen a pink bathroom in along time. Shower would have been nice, 2 people in the bath was a bit of a squeeze. The bed squeaked... Feel bad for the room below!
Review 56:It was a lovely room! Nice and clean, the owner was very nice and friendly. Felt very welcome. The wifi is really good! Bed room was great, as was what I got up too!
Review 57:The dinner menu should have been displayed more prominently The Wi Fi connection was limited but was in the process of being updated with new routers etc which should resolve the issues
Review 58:The room though dated was comfortable and clean The breakfasts were exceptionally good
Review 59:I liked the fact that you had a good range of food and drink in a very friendly atmosphere. We were looked after very well and given good advice about walks around and outside the town.
Review 60:i didn't like the negative reviews i read about this place small minded people with small minded attitude that's all it was.
Review 61:everything about the place was just stunning views food hospitality entertainment the stuff for exceptional if you wanted anything all you had to do was ask and i will provide.
Review 62:Our room was extremely poor. The bed was uncomfortable. The tv was too small and not easy to watch therefore. There was little light and it was not easy to see to apply make up as the mirror was in the dark area. The hand basin was cracked and the shower panel did not touch the bath. consequently the water from the shower went on the carpet. The bath was quite slippy and as we are older this was a worry.
Review 63:The food was of excellent quality. The husband of the couple was friendly and helpful and was there to greet us each evening and serve us with a high class meal. The hotel was within easy access to major roads.
Review 64:Shower room had high step into unit and was small. Handbasin was in room
Review 65:Old building, quirky features. Good selection of cereals, fruit etc at breakfast. I don't like a full English cooked breakfast.
Review 66:My wife and I had an over night stay.We can recommend this hotel dinner & breakfast good, welcoming owner. Good size room with all that is required.
Review 67:What can you say about an hotel with no atmosphere and is run by people who do not have people skills? The food was not really that good and who wants to listen to solo piano music all night and at breakfast?
Review 68:Not much, the room was awful and the bathroom was in need of an upgrade. The garden could have been lovely but was not cared for. This hotel does weddings, glad mine wasn't there!
Review 69:Rather grumpy staff weren't particularly friendly when checking out just asked for payments and left it at that. Tired decor in rooms.
Review 70:Good sized room. Great breakfast.
Review 71:stairs and low ceilings, not all rooms have showers.perhaps not for people that are a little infirm as no lift.
Review 72:friendly staff,good food,very clean rooms and facilities,in a reasonable position.
Review 73:unable to find any faults with this hotel
Review 74:very friendly and helpful, good location for walking into town.breakfast was excellent.will certainly stop here again if in this area.
Review 75:The room we had smelt odd. The bathroom was dated and lacked a shower attachment. Not as clean as one would like. The towels provided were very small. The bed was noisy and a very small double. The room was the fire exit so stairs outside window so unable to leave window open. Uht milk. Vile. Small window of time to have breakfast or evening meals.
Review 76:The food was of pretty good quality.
Review 77:The general untidyness of the room and stairs, staff not very welcoming, no shower, decor very dated, no wifi at all in room, led to an unhappy visit.
Review 78:The breakfast
Review 79:My wife complained of a lumpy pillow in bed but I slept like a log!
Review 80:Georgina and Steven were very accommodating very helpful and very knowledgeable about the area. Steven was very easy to talk to and had plenty of time for us. It was a most pleasant stay.
Review 81:Not really a dislike, more an observation which is applicable to many hotels nowadays - they all seem to need a bit of refurbishment when it comes to carpets, decor etc but to make a living they have to be open for most of the year leaving little opportunity of work to be carried out.
Review 82:Handy location, (must have had a fantastic view once upon a time before some houses were built at the back), good car park, pleasant staff, good choice of food, very comfortable beds
Review 83:Breakfast. Milk was sour and had to cut mold of f strawberries to eat. Also lunch menu not good for vegrtarians. Ordered a sun dried tomato sald with poached egg but also came with bacon and sausage which was not mentioned on menu
Review 84:Location
Review 85:The owners were very helpful from the moment we arrived till the moment we left. They gave us ideas of where to visit and what to see. The food was really lovely and the chef was always on form. Our room was always clean and the refilling of toiletries was always carried out if needed. Well worth a visit.
Review 86:The bar shut at 10 and the restaurant closed at 9pm, which meant we needed to find an alternative eating spot....funnily enough at the hotel across the road!
Review 87:The view form the bedroom was lovely, though if had been in any other of the rooms we would have been disappointed.
Review 88:Clean but very dated en-suite bathroom which didn't seem to fit with the high standard of the room.
Review 89:Lovely character bedroom and very nice dining area. Great location for a walk into Ross-on-Wye.
Review 90:Furnishings were a bit tired and shabby in places in the rooms. Pillows were poor and extra pillows should have been available in the room. Bathroom very dated with no shower.
Review 91:Food was excellent. Staff very friendly. Position excellent.
Review 92:Very convenient, clean and a great breakfast.
Review 93:There was nothing that I didn't like it was superb.
Review 94:The welcome and warm hospitality by the owner.
Review 95:the bathroom dated needed a lot of work
Review 96:the owner loverly do anything for you tell you places to go made you feel welcombe
Review 97:The outside appearance could do with a fresh coat of paint and some new signage.
Review 98:Plenty of car parking space. And a lovely breakfast!
Review 99:Rooms very dated, with decoration that has been done, rushed.
Review 100:Good Parking, responsive to request I.e Ironing board and iron

Review 109:A small country hotel run by a delightful, accommodating couple. Wonderful breakfast.
Review 110:Very hospitable, the manager was great conversation and looked after us well. Both the evening meal and breakfast were lovely.
Review 111:Lovely hotel with very comfy bed and friendly staff. Food was very good and would def stay here again :)

Review 119:The owner was very friendly attention to details eg sweets in the room
Review 120:The whole place appeared dirty and unkept and that's only what I could see. So did not eat breakfast. I did not expect this.
Review 121:nothing
Review 122:we liked the owners who made us fell very welcome ,rooms lovely and clean, and very good food.
