Reviews for The Royal Hotel

Review 1:Room very cold on arrival, for a large bathroom a very small shower. oh and very poor loo roll.

Review 2:very comfey bed so a good nights sleep , room7 nice size and view and the breakfast was top rate.

Review 3:Nothing - all good!

Review 4:Upgraded to an amazing sea view suite on arrival by one of the friendliest front of house staff I've ever met! Beautiful room, fluffy bath robes, slippers, toiletries, everything we needed. Great restaurant next door. All finished off with a gorgeous, very well stocked breakfast room. Will definitely return

Review 5:Not a bad experience but few little things like no heating in bathroom, toilet roll holder was big plastic like service station toilets, tea cups too small, minor things though

Review 6:Got upgraded to executive suite with sea view. Massive room with sofa, great view of sea. Loved the feather pillows too.

Review 7:Room 4 above Tapas bar. Noise on thired night, from 7:30 to 0:00. Loud base disco. Other two nights fine.

Review 8:Great position on the sea front and in walking distance of the town.

Review 9:Internet not great and public areas other than dining room were a little tired. But bedroom freshly painted and bathroom seemed new as well.

Review 10:Friendly staff, everything needed for a traveller yet a budget price. Excellent breakfast.

Review 11:Maureen who checked me in was very welcoming. An upgraded room was available which I was assigned. The location was perfect for my meeting with friends later in the evening.

Review 12:The hotel is on the seafront which means you can see St Mary's lighthouse. The staff are so helpful, warm and friendly. The food is lovely and in relaxed atmosphere.

Review 13:The dreadful noise from the nightclub below our room. The music stopped at midnight but then it got noisy outside under the awning until after 0100. Saturday and Sunday nights.

Review 14:Heating was too inefficient may be between 9-12 C. Requested a staff member but it did not improve at all. Very loud party noise kept the family awake till 12.30 am.

Review 15:Nice view from the windows!

Review 16:The room was freezing cold, set out in a very dysfunctional way. Bathroom huge with no form of heating. Private function in Bar two doors away, but rowdy people in street until 4 am NO SLEEP!

Review 17:We only had to stay for 1 night. Good breakfast choice

Review 18:My room, whilst functional was looking pretty tired. I asked for a sea view but instead got a view of A/C units and dumpsters.

Review 19:A nice change to find a hotel staffed by locals. Reasonably priced too.

Review 20:Reception day staff were not very helpful or friendly. Very loud and creaky in the night thin walls had to ask the room next door to turn the tv down as we could clearly hear what they were watching.

Review 21:Breakfast was amazing!

Review 22:Room was very clean and very comfortable. Splendid breakfast - continental or full (very!) english choices, as well as fresh fruit and a host of cereals. Really good place.Staff welcoming and friendly.

Review 23:We had to park on a side street because there were no spaces. We had returned to our room at 9.45 to get an early night so we could be up early to explore the area. Apparently Caroline (as the D.J kept shouting!) was having her birthday party in the Tapas bar directly under our room. Had we been informed of this in the morning, we could have moved to a quieter room. The disco continued until 1am (despite after our first complaint, being told it would finish at midnight) and then guests poured out of the bar into the street for their taxis, laughing and shouting until 2.35am. The room continually vibrated to the sound of the disco and despite us going to the reception to complain twice, we were told nothing could be done to stop it. My wife was in tears and consequently, we decided to leave the next morning. We had booked for two nights, but having suffered the noise of Friday night, we knew it would be worse on Saturday 31st, as we assumed that there would be another raucous evening booked because it was Hallowe'en. We didn't stay for breakfast and when we complained at the desk, the lady gave us a full refund, as she said the party should not have continued until that time. We came to the conclusion that because it was 'out of season', the most important guests were those attending private functions at the Tapas bar, spending copious amounts of money at the bar. Paying guests at the hotel, who were there for a quiet break were disregarded, as they were obviously few and far between in the latter part of the year.

Review 24:The room had an excellent sea view.

Review 25:The room with a view (number 12) was fabulous; not only the very spacious room itself itself but the glorious view along the front. Enjoyed my meal in the lounge bar. Even as a lone female; I did not feel uncomfortable. Will send photos as soon as possible. Good cooked or continental breakfast on offer. I can unreservedly recommend this hotel.

Review 26:Size of Cups were like a miniature cup . Extraction and water system noisy breakfast room very hot but none of them a major issue .

Review 27:Was a nice hotel with a nice bar area breakfast was good and rooms were clean and a good size . Staff were polite . Would definitely stay again

Review 28:Not a bad experience...but please please please replace the reception area, it was so awful we nearly walked back out and checked in somewhere else. First impressions count!

Review 29:Staff, all staff we met were great Cleanliness Comfort Breakfast Upgraded to a sea view room (thank you) but the huge bathroom only had a small shower toilet and basin this was fine for us but such a shame for a grand hotel

Review 30:Bed was a bit out of date, needed new mattress. Would have like some sort of chair to sit in/on inside the room for reading and such.

Review 31:It was quiet and right on the shoreline. Great to walk out to see the North Sea, breathtaking views. Easily found and accessible. Just a quick walk from the metro station. One of the staff members knew my name two days later, so personal! Breakfast was great!

Review 32:Asked for a double room but ended up with a family room at the top of the house, to many stairs to climb.

Review 33:The food was good and the hotel was very clean.

Review 34:the royal hotel is the worst place i've stayed so far. we stayed in a room on the first floor which is located directly over the bar. In our case there was a privat party going on till midnight. The bass was so loud, we got a free multiple-hour foot massage, because the floor was vibrating from beneath. we measured noise up to 65 decibel till midnight. the hotel manager couldn't solve the problem and refused to call the owner of the hotel. the owner of the royalhotel and other places in the area is Mr Paul Johnstone. I recommed you choose other places to stay, where you are treated as guests and are not subject to a complete rip-off.

Review 35:whitley bay in general is a nice place to stay.

Review 36:When you flushed the toilet or put the shower on it resounded throughout the hotel.

Review 37:I enjoyed it was just opposite the sea and we could watch the sea and hear it. The breakfast a as lovely and the Seaview suite was spacious, just needed some comfy chairs by the window.

Review 38:Not that I didn't like, more like it's a pity there's not more parking spaces.

Review 39:Ease of booking, friendly staff, clean premises, food layout (breakfast) and brilliant views.

Review 40:being addressed by my Christian name.no restaurant for evening meal due to a private function making it closed to guests.disco till gone 1 in the morning.

Review 41:cleanliness,generous size of room,

Review 42:Resteraunt was a separate business and expensive. No residents lounge. Unable to use bar as let out to private parties on two consecutive evenings. Noisy until early hours on two consecutive evenings

Review 43:No bar for hotel guests cant hear yourself trying to talk with friends in the bar. Stairs are very steep not for anyone with walking problems

Review 44:Breakfast was good

Review 45:The parking, we booked because they said they had parking, yes for 8 cars for a hotel with 40 rooms. We know it is difficult given the area but would suggest they say limited parking. We did find parking in surrounding streets but was limited with permit parking holders & time, e.g. free from 5.30pm to 9.00am which means you could have a lie in, assuming you wanted one!!!!

Review 46:The staff extremely helpful and friendly, the range of food for breakfast unbelievable it catered for every ones taste, the room was beautiful, clean & comfortable, the view was of a back street but we were not there except to sleep. A very good hotel and would definitely stay there again.

Review 47:soft beds, no bath, suite was just a room super kingsize bed was not and it was too low and too soft very disappointed there was no bath i like a good soak room was very overpriced at £80 per night and the parking was very poor would not stay here again

Review 48:the breakfast was above average the staff pleasant and helpful

Review 49:The room we had (no 23) was rather poky and looked nothing like the ones shown on the website. The fact that the bed was only accessible from one side, the lack of a chair with the dressing table and a shower head which could not be adjusted for height because the rail had been placed too close to the shower box were details which lessened our experience

Review 50:Clean, comfortable, generally friendly staff and excellent breakfast.

Review 51:The bed was phenomemally uncomfortable. A tiny single next to a wall (I hate that!) but the worst thing was that the mattress was lumpy and broken - it went "clonk" every time I moved! Very poor night's sleep. I have stayed here before so I know they can do better otherwise I would not return. No one in reception to tell about it when I departed.

Review 52:Good value for being handy for Newcastle. Good wifi.

Review 53:The stairs to our room right at the top, no lift. Nothing available when we returned from the rugby match at St James Park, price was nearly double compared to hotels else where and in comparison to London hotels, Edinburgh hotels, Stratford upon Avon just a few of the other places we visited during our trip, this hotel rated the lowest in facilities and value for money.

Review 54:Margaret on the front desk when we arrived was very helpful and nice

Review 55:Our niggle was the carpet in our other wise Lovley room . The fitted carpet was patched by the window but not stuck down !! So it moved every time you walked on it it moved ! A little bit of carpet tape would not go a miss . A wedding booked in the bar also stopped us from going in which was a let down

Review 56:The staff were great and very helpful and our sea view room was a bonus and breakfast is fabulous

Review 57:Only room for 4 car's so if your late back you have to park in side street. Bed was very soft and seemed old. Had a bad back next day. Not what I wanted when I had a 356 mile trip down to Whales the next day

Review 58:it was ok for what we payed

Review 59:Parking was a bit of an issue - there are only about 8 spaces. However there are places to park nearby for 50p per hour and free after a certain time. Although the bathroom was huge it had the smallest of shower cubicles.

Review 60:All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is excellent with the sea front right outside your door. Breakfast was well cooked, plentiful and with a good selection.

Review 61:there was a wedding reception so noisy below us till midnight but then we heard no noise at all

Review 62:the staff were very friendly - we were able to check in early so we could get ready for the rugby in Newcastle. the breakfast was amazing

Review 63:Shower didn't close properly and was a bit small but that's a minor thing.Didn't spoil my visit

Review 64:Location by the sea.Very friendly staff and brilliant room with sea views

Review 65:The one person room is really small. Almost inpossible to get in the shower along the bed. Door opens next to the bed.

Review 66:Nice staff, good breakfast. Clean room and decent shower.

Review 67:Room 10 is situated between 2 doors and a staircase making it rather noisy from footfall of other guests. The bathroom is in need of refurbishment and we had no hot water overnight and the following morning as apparently the pilot light on the boiler had gone out. We arrived back at the hotel at 11:10 pm on the Friday night and the bar was closed and the night staff did not have access to any drinks. We had to queue for 15 minutes for a table for breakfast on the Sunday morning. Parking is very limited on site. At over £100 per night, I do not think we received value for money.

Review 68:We had a lovely, spacious room (10) . The staff were fantastic and the breakfast good and plentiful.

Review 69:The only slight criticism is the shower is far too small for the size of the en-suite in the Club Room (Room No. 10).

Review 70:Nothing to dislike. Will certainly stay again.

Review 71:Great value for money, friendly helpful staff, relaxed atmosphere, breakfast was excellent & the breakfast room felt very homely. Had a drink in the bar, & dinner in the excellent Italian restaurant nextdoor

Review 72:Disappointed with the room but it may have been that they ran out of nice rooms due to our late booking. View of roof and dining room wall & window. Bathroom was basic and of poor quality. The curtain almost covered the window.

Review 73:Beautiful location right on the Coast road. Good quality breakfast, cooked food was lovely. Eggs cooked to order.

Review 74:The room was very basic. Also the shower was poor quality. My husband dropped me off with luggage to check in. Receptionist made me wait for him to get back to pay. Wasn't very nice just standing there when I could be checked in. I felt like we weren't trustworthy clients so we had to pay upfront. If it wasn't late I would have left.

Review 75:Excellent sea views. Breakfast was good though seating is tight.

Review 76:The main public room was booked for a wedding reception. This meant that no alternative was available for dining and socialsing in the hotel, contrary to promises made in advance by the manager. The sound of the wedding disco was very noisy in my room until midnight.

Review 77:Value for money is very good, very clean and comfortable room and excellent breakfast for the price.

Review 78:Lumpy bed broken springs. Dodgy TV reception. Noisy bathroom fan.no refill of coffee for second days stay.broken towl hook.limited parking.

Review 79:Location.good size room.very good breakfast and breakfast staff.good bar attatched to hotel.

Review 80:The smokers at the front of the hotel were a constant problem with cigarette smoke drifting in through the open windows.

Review 81:The suite was excellent value for money, spacious and confit able with a fabulous sea view.

Review 82:Read above

Review 83:My room was next to the Italian Restaurant's kitchen..... What did I like...... The music? The shouting? The clanking of dishes? The garlic smells? The awful dirty terra with rusty umbrellas? No...... Cannot say I liked anything at all.

Review 84:So where to start?! Rooms portrayed as light and airy=wrong. Rooms dull and way to hot due to heaters that fail to reduce in heat (so much so 24 hours after heater off my daughter burnt herself!) shower is so small that you'd be likely to bang your head if weren't holding shower stuff in hand and had to bend for it! I speak from experience!! As if banging head in shower wasn't bad enough- the curtain rail was held up by Sellotape and as drew curtains the pole fell on my head!!! Shoddy!! And food? Well lots of choice... But no vegetarian alternative. Scrambled egg was offered but as it was swimming didn't look particularly appetising or even cooked!! Staff seemed unwilling to listen... As for hotel bar well advertising it's closed to public due to a private function (fair enough) but those details could have been released in the morning giving time to plan an alternative instead of that evening.

Review 85:Location was excellent, beach a few meters away, short walk into town. That is pretty much all can say we liked.

Review 86:shower was not so good the water came out in fits and starts. The view was awful we were hoping for the sea views on the website but the room was comfy/and we couldnt complain for 45 pounds each

Review 87:breakfast was great and the staff were really nice.the bed was comfortable . Nothing was too much trouble and we were made welcome

Review 88:Lovely staff, good communication and provided us with rooms early as we were dashing to a wedding! Breakfast was awesome! Lovely view from large bedroom.

Review 89:The only down side was that the hotel bar was being used for a wedding on our 1st night so was closed to residents , I felt that there should still be an area for residents . When there is no private function the bar closed at 10pm so the group of 7 of us couldn't have a relaxing drink on our return to the hotel after our day / evening out.

Review 90:The staff were helpful and friendly. The location is great , right on the sea front and a two minute walk from town . We were in room 28 which was quite large , the other double rooms I seen were smaller but still had enough space . The hotel was clean and the breakfast was nice and presented as a buffet .

Review 91:Nothing major. Just little superficial things like the cleaning products in corridor and some tatty signs on some walls. Not enough to spoil my stay.

Review 92:Friendly staff, great location. I had a excellent view of the sea couldn't fault my room.

Review 93:This a complaint email we sent 48hrs ago and are yet to receive a reply."To the Manager/owner,My husband and I are contacting you to complaint about a very disappointing stay at your hotel on the 12th of September. My husband was running the Great North Run on the 13th of September, and we therefore paid the highly escalated price of £200 for our room. As your website advertises Great North Run prices we presumed that our £200 would ensure we had a good nights sleep. We were very much mistaken. We were in room 7, and when we arrived we were informed the tapas bar next door was closed for a private function of a wedding. From our room we could hear everything from the wedding disco until midnight - we could hear every song being played word for word and the room vibrated from the sound of the music system next door. We went down to reception twice to complain.Although sympathetic the staff informed us there was nothing they could do and there were no other rooms available. Even though the music eventually finished at around midnight, we could then hear fighting and shouting/swearing from drunk wedding guests outside for another hour! We eventually got to sleep around 2am but had to be up by 6am, so as you can imagine we were both exhausted and highly disappointed. My husband was especially frustrated and upset as he has been training for months for the half marathon, and the least we would expect for £200 is to be able to have a good nights sleep. We are at a loss as to why you would advertise Great North run rates for guests on your website and then book a wedding in your restaurant next door. The staff were well aware that we were visiting for the run, and yet our room was right next to the wedding. We are highly dissatisfied with our stay. We would not have booked to stay with you had we been made aware of a wedding taking place next door and the noise that we would experience.

Review 94:Nothing had a terrible stay.

Review 95:Parking was impossible. Only a few parks in front of this 40 room hotel and the area has ticketed or restricted parking

Review 96:Great buffet breakfast. Modern roon. Bath sheet for a towel.

Review 97:The wi-fi kept cutting out, but overall that wasn't a reason to be unhappy with the hotel.

Review 98:This hotel was comfortable, wonderfully located and the staff was extremely hospitable.

Review 99:Took me a while to work out that the only power sockets in the room were from an extension cable hidden behind the wardrobe. Single room was quite compact and bed ceraked when ever I turned over.

Review 100:Excellent breakfast, including a good range of fresh and dried fruits. I was offered the use of a much better twin room, instread of the two singles I had booked, but I didn't really want to share with my mother :-)

Review 101:Was a little disappointed that we didn't get a sea view. We also had to move the bed a little, didn't like the fact that one side of it was pushed right up to the wall. The bathroom was also very small.

Review 102:The hotel was lovely, staff friendly and helpful, location was good...

Review 103:not enough staff on at breakfast and person on their own doing breakfast as other member of staff doing dishes was very stressed and it caused a atmosphere

Review 104:The sea view we paid extra and it was worth it

Review 105:Having to boil kettle on floor Parking for only six cars although the local council could support the hotel by providing free parking disks for hotel users as other councils do in other resorts

Review 106:The service and staff were great

Review 107:Parking facilities were ridiculous Postcode takes to to wrong road at back if hotel all permit parking at front only small layby daren't move the car once parked in case could park anywhere so had to taxi to wedding we were there for I am disabled but had to carry everything from another road Nothing about this other than first come first served in advert Had to close blinds in room as directly overlooked by houses and other rooms Climbed 3 storeys to room no help with luggage no lift Heater smelt and was burnt on grill of it

Review 108:Very friendly staff good breakfasts

Review 109:Lack of parking an issue - had to leave the car on an open public carpark on the seafront a few times. Beds a bit too soft (for my taste).

Review 110:Breakfast was good and the general location on the seafront in a pleasant coastal resort was nice. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 111:No fault of the hotel, but although the position is very central, the immediate area is currently very run down. Why do so many double rooms in hotels offer only one chair?? What sense does this make?

Review 112:The welcome, the excellent facilities, the value. Staff were friendly, courteous and hard-working.

Review 113:Sea view suites were very spacious and gave brilliant view of the beach, pity the broken down double-glazed unit spoiled the view a bit as it had condensation in it.

Review 114:No bad experience but a warning to travellers who are either infirm or heavy luggage. No lift and steep stairs. They are happy to help you with luggage but beware. Also when using a web map, the directions take you to the rear of the hotel.

Review 115:Breakfast Brilliant, though an offer of 2nd cup of tea would be nice. Location right on the front was delightful and within easy walking distance of both St Mary's Island and Tynemouth as well as the metro station (and half an hour ride into Newcastle). Hotel was clean, though they did forget to top up my toiletries.

Review 116:The shower in the room was a bit small.

Review 117:The staff were very friendly and helpful the breakfast was lovely and you could go as many times as you like the location was excellent for bars and restaurants really enjoyed my stay and will definitely be there again top marks!

Review 118:There was no lift but a lot of stairs. We were in room 28 at the back of the building. The room was too hot and the radiator had a large brown burn stain on it which was unpleasant to the eye. For the price being paid for one night I would have hoped the condition of the room would have been perfect. The bathroom flooring was extremely slippery and would benefit from a bath mat as it is dangerous.

Review 119:The staff were pleasant and the breakfast was delicious and there was a fantastic variation of food.

Review 120:There were road works going on which contributed to parking difficulties. We were lucky most days and got a space on the limited parking at front of hotel. As others have said on street parking nearby free in evenings and can pre-pay for first hour of morning

Review 121:We stayed in junior suite which we picked deliberately as we were there for a few days. Large room and bed with a seating area view over promenade Went to all three of nearby eating establishments 2 attached to hotel and Chinese all good and had value for money deals mid week/early evening

Review 122:Room a bit basic and dingy with view of back alley. No sea view rooms left

Review 123:Friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast excellent. Room and public areas spotlessly clean

Review 124:The car park is very small and alternate parking is in the adjacent street which is pay and display between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Saturday

Review 125:The location and the size of the room and bathroom. The staff were friendly and helpful. Requested a room with a sea view and got one.

Review 126:It can be very difficult to park. Bed could be more comfortable. The hotel needs an update. A little pricey for what it is

Review 127:It was in a good location in front of the sea. Staff very pleasant

Review 128:The road along the seafront was closed to through traffic so caused a bit of confusion initially

Review 129:Excellent location for either walking on the beach or driving to sites close by. The Italian restaurant Avanti next door was amazing and I will go back there just for that alone!

Review 130:I did not have any bad experiences at all during my stay.

Review 131:Thebed was very comfortable, the breakfast was very good and the location was excellent. I had a very nice stay at the Royal Hotel and would stay there again on my next visit to Whitley Bay.

Review 132:parking is a nightmare, only 7 spaces for 39 rooms, (most of parking spaces taken up by staff) pay and display on nearby streets (if you can find a space) lots of stairs if you are on the top floors,

Review 133:very helpful staff, brilliant breakfast, good food in the hotel restaurant, our room had a sea view.

Review 134:Finding the way to the room through the labyrinth of hallways. Wi-fi in the whole area is not good. Forgot on download.

Review 135:Staff is extremely helpful and kind! Delicious home style breakfast :) Next doors are restorans and bars. Good value for the money.

Review 136:Room 14 was very hot and noisy. Breakfast room was extremely hot. Free wifi was practically non-existent it was so weak. Surprised we were made to pay upfront on arrival - what would have happened had we not been happy with our stay?! Toilet didn't flush properly and shower very weak. The very weak flush of the toilet, however, was loud enough to wake our 9 week old baby up!

Review 137:Good selection of cooked breakfast. Would've liked a fresh fruit salad to complement this. Staff kindly sent back some clothes to me that I left behind.

Review 138:Having to leave to go home.

Review 139:All aspects of the hotel and the helpfulness of the staff. We paid the extra for a sea view and was pleasantly surprised.homel

Review 140:Very noisy once clubs close outside hotel, woke us up. Maybe if there was someone manning reception they could have had the noise stopped.

Review 141:Friendly staff ,bedroom nice overlooking sea bathroom nice and Lovely breakfast

The Fine Print

Please note that parking is allocated on a first come first served basis. Please be aware that there are 17 steps leading from reception to the rooms. The staircase is wide with a wide banister.
