Reviews for Royal Hotel
Review 1:Nothing to not like.
Review 2:We only stayed one night but we walked into town and looked around and also had a lovely meal at the hotel and the breakfast was beautiful.
Review 3:Dirty cups in room. Food crumbs and cereal on breakfast tables swept onto the carpet.
Review 4:Friendly staff. Lovely views. Comfortable bed. Very good food especially for a vegetarian like me
Review 5:Not a bad experience as such, but disappointed with the menu choices, particularly as I am vegetarian. We ate out instead.
Review 6:The view from the room, the comfy bed, friendly staff, Christmas decorations
Review 7:Pleasant staff, wonderful rooms , very clean, lovely evening meal! I'm a coeliac and they catered for me very well. Bar staff abut slow if more than two at the bar but otherwise nothing at all to say except wonderful time would go again!!
Review 8:tables in breakfast room were too close to the buffet breakfast so people were almost knocking our table
Review 9:Stayed New Year's Eve the hotel was decorated beautifully. Really good choice at breakfast. Staff couldn't be more helpful
Review 10:Plumbing in room was noisy and bed too soft for our comfort. Breakfast room utilitarian layout.
Review 11:Great location in town. Attitude of staff and friendliness. Room spacious with good views of the town. Positive buzz. Old school charm.
Review 12:The beds are very soft as are the pillows so it wasn't as comfortable as we'd hoped
Review 13:Great location and view, very festive atmosphere over Christmas. Cosy rooms.
Review 14:No tissues or writing pad in the room. A very small bath. Just a lack of the little extra comforts - no shower gel/shampoo in bathroom. Limited selection for a continental breakfast.
Review 15:Location was great and the room had a great view. The bed was very comfortable. The staff were helpful and friendly and it was certainly clean.
Review 16:Single room was small and dark compared to other rooms I've stayed in at this hotel. Wanted room service and had to ring from my mobile as no-one picked up internal fone. Oh and only 2tea bags!
Review 17:Comfortable bed. Lots of hot water. Warm room. Tasty food for dinner and breakfast. Lovely atmosphere.
Review 18:The breakfast service on the first morning we were there was very slow.
Review 19:Lovely bedroom and communal areas. All very clean, and very nicely decorated. Lovely views from our room.
Review 20:My meal had to go back to the kitchen twice, who do these chefs think they are? Overall a very poor food experience and not so helpful / friendly staff, need professional training. Why is it as a customer you see the total lack of professional standards, yet hotels ignore this and leave the poor customer to take poor service. My food was returned twice to the kitchen, nothing like having cold food after a long day driving and working! OK they refunded the meal at checkout but didn't bother to tell me! why, they lost the opportunity to gain some customer respect. Ordered a newspaper, on enquiry in the morning, "sorry I have rung them twice but they haven't delivered them as yet (08:00AM) ! I will call them again" Ok the ppaer came 10 minutes later but wouldn't you have chased them before that ? Its all about customer service, or lack of it. At check out, no words like have you enjoyed your stay? Just a very unproffesional performance, she should have looked at the bill and asked why there was a credit for food and apologised for any problems, its ABC really, shame it could be a nice hotel.
Review 21:Good location
Review 22:I love this hotel. I have been twice and would gladly go back. Great room, bar and food and lovely helpful staff. Also fantastic location and great view
Review 23:Just the extremely loud noise from the pipes in the bathroom everytime one flushed the toilet. Not too good at 3am in the morning!
Review 24:Super views of theRiver Wye. Staff were all very welcoming and helpful. Dining experience was faultless.
Review 25:We were OK with it, but there is no lift, so it would be tough if you can't do stairs.
Review 26:Breakfast was great, and the rooms were comfortable. Ate dinner there too and it was delicious.
Review 27:We really enjoyed our stay, the rooms were clean, comfortable and noise free (apart from the noise from the storm that was blowing on the second night of our visit) :-). Food was excellent and there was a lovely atmosphere in the bar and restaurant. The hotel was well used by locals too - something we always take as a good sign. We were also really pleased that we were staying at the hotel that we always said looked lovely every time we drove pass Ross - which I hadn't realised when I made the booking so was a bonus. Would definitely recommend and will certainly book this hotel for our next visit.
Review 28:Why have they put locks on window so can only open 2 inches. I am really fed up with being unable to open windows in hotels. I have real problems but no one cares.
Review 29:Good atmosphere. Grub good beer OK.
Review 30:Not that we go away to watch telly but the lack of tv channels - I would expect all the freeview channels at the very least these days - there were only about 10 channels to choose from.
Review 31:View,breakfasts,food,location,parking
Review 32:Reception very pleasant, dining very pleasant service Enjoyed the tea and coffee in room Comfy bed and spacious Generally very homely Now had 3 visits to The Royal all good will return again
Review 33:Too many stairs , and poor directions to get to rooms
Review 34:Relaxing with good food. Reception were able to change brothers room so next door instead of other side of hotel form us. Bookings were made separately .
Review 35:we loved the staff, view, room, food.we had a very good time and we enjoyed our stay. will recommand your hotel and will stay again during our next visit to the UK
Review 36:Floorboards creaky and sash windows a bit rattly in the wind, guess that adds to the character of what is an old building.
Review 37:Great location, nice superior room with character.
Review 38:Nothing really. We decided to come away at the last minute, and booked an hour before we left home. I forgot to pack shower "stuff", but there was only soap and body lotion at the hotel.
Review 39:Beautifully situated high above the river Wye. Lovely building, well decorated throughout. Restaurant very the good, in particular the "Tom Kerridge" beef and ale pie. Excellent, friendly staff.
Review 40:Nothing at all!
Review 41:Excellent ambience when entering hotel. Girls on reception were lovely and very welcoming. Booking.com had apparently not given The Royal our reservation but they handled it well and gave us an upgrade to compensate. Dined at the hotel, food was superb!
Review 42:Poorly made bed. Shower temperature difficult to control. 1 type of tea, 1 type of coffee in room. No decaff choice. Breakfast staff hadn't a clue about being organised. Cooked breakfast (obviously pre-prepared) arrived before I had started cereal. Tea arrived cold.
Review 43:Room was quiet.
Review 44:Although the furniture in the room was in keeping with the period the hotel was built, there was not enough room for clothes if you were staying for several days.
Review 45:The view over the river. Food and value.
Review 46:the room was very clean and the view was first class. the staff were very friendly and helpful the food was first class all in all there is nothing to fault with the hotel.
Review 47:Sometimes hard to find a seat in bar, a resident's area would be nice.
Review 48:Friendly and helpful staff. Lively bar and a good choice of food. Much improved since our last visit 8 years ago
Review 49:Lovely choice of food in the bar or restaurant including a wide variety of vegetarian options. Breakfasts were varied and lovely with personal options no problem for the staff. Stunning room - The Pickwick, with plenty of space. Great shower in the ensuite.
Review 50:Overnight business stay, friendly welcome the double room was quite spacious will all the usual facilities. Choice of restaurant of the bar to eat, good menu and food
Review 51:Lovely hotel, great location, very comfortable room, and most important for me a 'walk in shower'. Food very good, and very friendly staff in attendance.
Review 52:It would be nice if hotel offered a deal re first night stay with a discount off evening meal.
Review 53:We both had a really relaxing stay everyone was really friendly and welcoming.
Review 54:The hotel was excellent. I booked it knowing that it was a 3 star which is not something I usually do, 4 star is usually my minimum, but the hotel looked so nice I decided to give it a go. It was in a lovely location the staff were excellent, food was perfect and the room was great. We were really surprised that this hotel was only given 3 stars. Would definitely go back.
Review 55:it was a mild weekend so the room was exceptionally hot but we opened windows so ended up fine and would have loved a lounge area - not always up for sitting in the bar area
Review 56:We love this hotel - perfect location and perfect room - we did book a superior
Review 57:There is no where for the residents to relax after dinner other than the Bar which is open to everyone and has the atmosphere of a pub - Friday and Saturday chaotic I came to a hotel to relax especially after dinner ended up in our room bar(pub atmosphere)very crowded and noisy not the place to relax
Review 58:Great location friendly staff
Review 59:No shampoo and shower gel provided which is poor for the quality of the rest of the hotel. We had one long wait for our main course in the restaurant and when it arrived one of them was not up to standards.
Review 60:Location,breakfast and staff
Review 61:Really comfortable room and the restaurant was very good. Food was excellent and each member of staff were friendly throughout our stay. Great location and plenty of places to visit.
Review 62:not many places to sit and relax after your meal only in corridor by the front door or on the landing. Not everybody want's to sit in the bar. NO Lift !!
Review 63:Staff and rooms nice overlooking river
Review 64:Not so much a bad experience as room for improvement. Small details such as providing tissues and hand soap as well as the shower body and hair dispenser. There Parking facilities are limited and not available when I arrived; information about on-street parking restrictions could have been provided with the booking confirmation.
Review 65:Excellent with fabulous views across the Wye Valley. Bedroom was large with a very comfortable bed and small balcony giving access to the views.
Review 66:Could have done with a lift but was a great way to burn off the fantastic breakfast!
Review 67:Fantastic hotel, staff were lovely, room was spotlessly clean and presented to a very high standard. Nice touches were greatly appreciated such as the hot towels already on the rail, good quality coffee in the room, decent size tv, beautiful bedlinen and a very well appointed room.
Review 68:no bad experience as such. The food was good but somehow did not match the excellence of the room. We both thought the extractor fans in the restaurant were excessively noisy.
Review 69:The room we stayed in was excellent. The view from it was breathtaking, especially in the morning with the mist and sun breaking through. Location was good and access into town by bus was very convenient.
Review 70:The Hotel was excellent. The staff were lovely and it was ideal for a weekend break. We will be back again as the food was out of this world and there was plenty to see and do.
Review 71:Just one criticism, we would have liked to have stayed an extra night but when enquiring about this though the room was available there was no concession offered in fact the rate was a Friday night rate @ £10 extra.which we consider is poor business sense and poor customer relations.
Review 72:We were impressed by the friendliness of the staff and quality of the restaurant food.
Review 73:Bigger parking spaces (I have a large 4x4) would be nice but that is all.
Review 74:Staff were very helpful. The room was very comfortable and Mumm champagne for £25 on a Friday can't be beat. Food was excellent and the location just right.
Review 75:The location of this hotel so near to the town and with the view over the river was lovely. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The rooms were full of character and I hope to return
Review 76:The toilet in our room made an awful sound when flushed and the shower wasn't very practical. Staff members weren't so attentive once we had checked out.
Review 77:The room was nice. The bed was comfy and view was fantastic. The South African staff members were fabulous.
Review 78:Every member of staff were excellent at their job. Very switched on and attentive without being all over us. Good breakfast and great service at breakfast even though it was busy. Eggs royal! The high caliber of your staff was noticeable, particularly the younger ones.
Review 79:Room gets to hot with heating so on our second night we slept with window open and was just fine. Bed slightly hard on my back although I do suffer with it.
Review 80:Beautiful location lovely decorated hotel, great food, staff very polite nothing to much trouble.clean.
Review 81:The evening meal was poor and the bedrooms very hot even though heating not on in room. We ate out at the Kings Head in the evening which has fresh well cooked tasty food.
Review 82:The view was stunning , staff very helpful . Good choice of cooked breakfasts and well cooked
Review 83:the lovely views, the convenience of the bar meals, whenever we wanted to eat or drink. The pleasant and welcoming staff. The general air of comfort and relaxation.
Review 84:Nothing !!
Review 85:great hotel, staff were so helpful and always happy room had just great views over the rive and fields, we would certainly recommend this hotel to family and friends.
Review 86:Forced into drawing the curtains and putting the light on which then excluded the magnificent view (which cost more), because we were almost having a conversation with the customers enjoying a drink in the garden...! Felt cheated that we could not enjoy it as we should have. Net curtains would have made us want to come back to the same view...
Review 87:Particularly enjoyed our evening meal in 'the old ballroom'. Very good service and very good food. Really enjoyed the views from our bedroom but...
Review 88:Parking could be interesting if fully booked and a function on But don't let this stop you booking
Review 89:Every thing. Superb. Room and food. Staff really friendly
Review 90:Although Ross on Wye itself was a little disappointing the hotel was very nice. The staff were really pleasant from the management right down to the chambermaids. The food was good and the bar prices were realistic.
Review 91:Reliance on the cloud for wifi was a bit of a pain, as it wasn't a great connection and one had to register and then sign in every time. And it would have been nice to have something other than the one gel soap that was supposed to do for hand washing at the sink, body washing in the shower and shampooing.
Review 92:The location of this lovely old hotel was excellent, with beautiful views over the Wye and yet still just a couple of short blocks from the city centre. And there was a lovely park and old cemetery just off the hotel grounds. Although they only had a twin room left when we booked, I asked in the reservation form if they could push the beds together to make a king, so it was like a king bedroom at a twin price. The bathroom and bedroom were spacious (and had a tub!), the staff were friendly, and the food in the bar/restaurant was very good.
Review 93:Generally the meals were very good but vegetable selection accompanying a large number of the main course items were not very imaginative i.e. peas, sugar snap peas and carrots.
Review 94:The location with views over the Wye was excellent and the staff at the hotel were very welcoming, helpful and all were extremely pleasant.
Review 95:Would have liked more drawers in the bedroom and one member of the breakfast dining staff was humourless and unfriendly, but everyone else was lovely
Review 96:As above
Review 97:Too hot / too high tog duvet / noisy people outside and church bells at night.
Review 98:Lovely building inside and out. Breakfast had good choices. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Review 99:Nothing
Review 100:This Hotel was in a prime location, comfortable and very helpful and friendly staff. Would particularly like to thank the reception lady who enquired about cabs to Newent was very helpful. the hotel was lovely and clean and the breakfast first class. Thank you for making our two night stay memorable.
Review 101:for the 2nd time attending this hotel could not Park, Could not sleep as a fan went off intermittently all night, felt so tired from no sleep could not eat breakfast ,I told reception politely of the problem on leaving as I thought they should know & there was no gesture to reduce my bill for at least the value of breakfast not to mention goodwill for my inconvenience. Suggested I do not have that room again, I suggest I will not be staying at the Hotel again...
Review 102:friendly staff in bar/Rest
Review 103:Staff very welcoming, friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Room was neat and tidy with a lovely scenic view. Food was excellent and great value for money.
Review 104:Breakfast dining area was very cold in the mornings. Ordered by staff (yes, ordered !) to sit at a table laid for 2 and not 4 persons (although we never saw any 4 persons at breakfast during our stay, whatever time we came down) Bedroom was cold. Tried heating, didn't work. Dragged out portable heater to use. Door wood work near door handles especially bathroom door, dirty with pink marks - looks like make-up stains. Overall, didn't feel bathroom had been cleaned but we were given clean towels as and when required.
Review 105:Breakfast choice was excellent, and well cooked. Comfortable room, Lovely river view. Bar food and Evening Restaurant meals good value. Symonds Yat - worth a visit - great walking areas all around. Lots to see and do.
Review 106:My only criticism of this establishment would be on presenting ourselves for breakfast on the first morning being shown to a table where my wife ordered the porridge from the breakfast menu this obviously had to be prepared by the kitchen staff whilst I had the normal cereals, at the time my wife ordered her porridge i was asked what cooked breakfast I wanted and my order was taken, my wife was served her porridge and about 5 minutes later I was served a well cooked english breakfast, at this time my wife having finished her porridge asked if she could order her cooked breakfast, the waitress quite rudely I thought told her she should have ordered it at the same time as her porridge, I intervened by stating this had not been explained to us by her when sitting us down, however her attitude was that of us being in the wrong not her. The following 2 mornings went without hitch as we were now aware of the routine. Please do not allow the latter comment to put you off staying here it really is a first class place to stay and all other staff were friendly and professional.
Review 107:The hotel is ideally situated for exploring the local area, the views from the hotel can be breathtaking and the main shopping centre is no more than 2 minutes walk from the hotel.
Review 108:On Friday night there was a very noisy party going on and people were shouting and screaming in the street. This went on well past midnight and kept us awake. Also, on Saturday morning the breakfast was a bit chaotic.
Review 109:Fabulous location and excellent restoration of a lovely building.
Review 110:The toaster machine at breakfast........WHY? Log jam nightmare.
Review 111:Everything, the effort and energy of the young staff in the restaurant was a credit to themselves and the hotel, really enjoyable stay.,
Review 112:Staff - too few, too rushed, poor service in restaurant, most look stressed and too busy to provide the service required of a hotel of this calibre.
Review 113:Location was great; facilities are great; room very lovely and food nice. Reasonable value for money, I would advise double-checking room allocation prior to arrival.
Review 114:For a superior room so called, I found the bathroom fittings poor and cheap. I have seen better ones in lower priced rooms. The bath has not got a handrail[s] to aid getting out and I for one at the age of 79 could not get up, a poor show. Also, at that price why were no tablets of soap supplied? other hotels make sure soap is in the bathroom, we had to go and get our own. In the bed room the carpet was not laid flat and contained bumps and raised parts as a result of bad fitting. Are you sure this room was superior?
Review 115:The restaurant and service.
Review 116:Odd shaped room. Decidedly average food at dinner. Wifi didn't work properly. Creaky floors. Have stayed in 2 very pleasant Olde English hotels before, this one was well below the standard.
Review 117:No soap in the bathroom!!! Hand lotion and shower gel were provided but no soap. I have cancer and am always at risk of infection and so washing hands constantly is normal routine for us and to not have soap was very uncomfortable. Fortunately I always have hand sanitiser in my handbag but I think of soap as a staple, like loo roll, in any accommodation.
Review 118:Our room in the original hotel building overlooking the river. We didn't book it specifically (we had gone for the cheapest option!) but were delighted to have it.
Review 119:The hotel. Rather grubby and sticky, it has an unloved and uncared for ambience with brisk and unfriendly staff who can't wait for you to leave. We won't be back.
Review 120:The views
Review 121:We were unable to park in the hotel as there was a wedding held there. When we asked the Receptionist, she didn't really help us or explain the parking system on the outside grounds clearly. There needs to be parking for all residents, wedding or not.
Review 122:The food at breakfast was lovely. The views a fantastic.
Review 123:Did not have one.
Review 124:Reception was excellent and the rooms were of a very high standard. Without doubt the outstanding feature was the location and specifically the views over the Wye from the bar and its outstanding balcony & garden seating.
Review 125:For the price the hotel was a little shabby and lacking in room comforts, plus the noise from functions on Saturday night was not pleasant to say the least.
Review 126:Food was fine if a little "ordinary". Location was excellent for local shopping, sightseeing, eating.
Review 127:I've stayed here lots of times. I love the location of the hotel and it's been refurbished so the rooms are beautiful. Love the bar area with stunning views and we eat here in the evening. Gorgeous food and reasonably priced for a hotel. Breakfast is great and so are the staff.
Review 128:TV and Bathroom are idly mediocre for a superior room One cheap soap dispenser that is broke, poorly lined floor, dated 1st generation flat small tv screen with intermittent signal. But worse is that there is no local sourced produce from the amazing cider up the road to the bacon and said age that are just average at best. To cap it off. .. mustard should be proper not mild from a squeeze bottle!
Review 129:Most things are excellent
Review 130:Could not access wifi or cloud the whole stay
Review 131:The staff were very very good, friendly, willing to go the extra mile and happy. The breakfasts were top notch and the setting was fabulous.
