Reviews for Beach View Lodge
Review 1:The room was not as described in the folder that was in the room itself . No wifi, hairdryer , iron, water etc . Could also do with some redecorating .
Review 2:I enjoyed my stay and breakfast in the crumbs restaurant was great and staff were very friendly
Review 3:Very basic - I would not recommend this place. We booked it for elderly parents and moved them to the Roker Hotel which was much much better.
Review 4:Location was good. Hotel staff were helpful when we asked to move to main hotel.
Review 5:Room 203: no wireless in room, poor room lights, no hot water on tap in badroom sink, fresh towels left on the corridor floor, background voice of TV.
Review 6:location
Review 7:Rooms very tired, need a revamp and a good clean. Very noisy you can hear every single guest passing your room the wardrobe shakes! And the room vibrates!!?? The front door slams everytime someone comes in or out and wakes you with a massive shock! As it vibrates in the room! And bed! Weird! Breakfast was mediocre, no orange house, no bread, green scrambled eggs!
Review 8:Close to my mums house
Review 9:the room was freezing, heating wasn't on and only had a tiny heater, the bed was like lying on the floor. NO WIFI!!!! Wouldn't stay here ever again, i would rather sleep in my van.
Review 10:absolutely nothing!!
Review 11:Dirty shower with mould. No heating.Old dated rooms.Tear in bed base No breakfast information given .Arigant manager on front desk.Refused us complaint for.
Review 12:Nothing.Dirty.Dated.No heating.Wrong room given.Futher charges added to change to another room
Review 13:Nothing. But have the opportunity to improve its facilities, like wi-fi, a hair dryer, an iron in the room.
Review 14:Location and the natural view.spacious and comfortable for a family traveler. Fantastic sea view which just minimise all the lacking's that remain in the lodge.
Review 15:Room 203 which was offered to us on arrival was no better than a dungeon. small dark , no views and miserable. It was an insult to offer us such a room.
Review 16:Room 201 was fine but cold.had to have heaters put in. The fitted night storage heaters weren't usable.
Review 17:Room needed decoration. Shower poor. Felt damp. Odd smell. Generally not a good standard. Breakfast was good but situated separately at The Roker Hotel.
Review 18:Location near to where we wanted it to be.
Review 19:it was not a really bad experience but my wife is disabled and there are no facilities for the disabled not even a ramp, or disabled parking we asked on the booking form for easy access yet when we got there were told that we were on the first floor (no lift) and just 1 set of 10 stairs, there were 2, my wife managed as it was only for 1 night and we were given a sea view room which was fantastic
Review 20:the location was very good, and the sea view family room was fantastic
Review 21:Having to go out of building to go for breakfast, especially when you have 3 young children and pouring down with rain
Review 22:Our first room the heating wasn't working, but was moved. And still had our sea view
Review 23:The room was so small I felt claustrophobic and looked out onto a brick wall. It felt like I was in a prison cell as I was locked in the room and this unfortunately put me behind on my appointments for the day.
Review 24:The location.
Review 25:Check in 2 doors down at roker hotel not advised in advance, left standing at the door. Room 202 In need of a revamp and bringing up to date. Beds and pillows too hard. Creaky floorboards and wardrobe that rattled everytime you pass it. Could hear entertainment 2 doors down, neighbours talking in next room and walking about in room above. Not enough power sockets so 2 extension cables were provided instead. No phone to get in touch with reception (2 doors down at the roker hotel).
Review 26:Great location for the beach, plenty of fresh towels, refreshments facilties and even on a 2 night stay, bed was made when we got back to the room. Good price with it being on the sea front. Clean, tidy, basic facilities such as tv and kettle provided. Breakfast provided at best Western 2 doors down was great, staff helpful, friendly and excellent service.
Review 27:The musty smell in the bedroom. The disgusting carpet in the bedroom. The dirty room. The dangerous plugs and sockets.
Review 28:The breakfast was very good. The location was excellent. The bed was comfortable.
Review 29:our room was like a prison cell. with a bathroom that was smelly, even the access to the rooms was a dingy corridor, it was like a hostel instead of guesthouse. the breakfast was tasteless and badly cooked
Review 30:the area
Review 31:We had two double rooms, one of which smelled very strongly of cigarette smoke and was also very compact, in fact just enough room to walk around the bed.
Review 32:The location was a pretty seaside town. Breakfast was good and the staff very helpful.
Review 33:The beach view is an annexe of the best western and it is tiny horrible rooms. On 2 occasions the fire door at the rear was held open with a piece of rubber. The doors of the room had signs of being previously forced so security is a big probl
Review 34:The location and the staff in the western 3 buildings away. They were great. And the breakfasts were superb. But they were served in the best western
Review 35:We had to walk outside in pouring rain , about 50 yards , to get to the dining room. !! We thought The hotel was an independent one but it was the bottom end of Best Western hence having to walk between the buildings ! And NO beach view from our room .
Review 36:Breakfast was the only good thing !
Review 37:The double bedroom was very small, only a 4' bed with about 1/2 metre to spare either side of the bed. There was no wardrobe in the bedroom, only hooks on the wall on which to hang the few clothes hangers that were available.
Review 38:The location on Roker seafront was perfect
Review 39:The room was a little small and there was no bath mats in bathroom and the floor was quite slippy
Review 40:The decor was very modern and the hotel is in a beautiful location
Review 41:i have a big issue with hotels having wifi signs in the booking page only to find when i arrive that you have to pay £5 for a couple of hours internet.
Review 42:We loved the rooms that the Hotel had provided for us and it is front view we can see the Pier and sea front just by looking out the front windows. Sunny on the days we was stay. We had friends who lived just 10 mins walked down the road and we all just walking back and forward and we had great times Thanks to the Hotel staffs
Review 43:The bed wasn't the comfiest and the pillows where rock hard..... Also I requested Wifi and didn't get it....
Review 44:The view of the sea shore was unbelievable...
Review 45:No staff evident on arrival, Lodge managed from Roker Hotel. Single room 204 totally unacceptable on so many levels. The room should only be used for staff overnight stays if needed and not let to guests. Moved to room 211, a double room, equally unacceptable,a basic luxury of a chair would have taken up free floor space. No wardrobe in either room. The 'main hotel' was full therefore couldn't be moved. Too late to find another Hotel. I didn't stay the planned second night. The weekend was effectively ruined. The staff of the Roker Hotel are the only redeeming feature of this Lodge. The staff were understanding and did what they could to assist in overcoming the Lodge' deficiencies.
Review 46:Location Staff at Roker Hotel.
Review 47:Sunderland loosing the match boohoo.
Review 48:Convenience, helpfull staff and the cleanliness of the hotel made for a comfortable stay.pity about Sunderland loosing but then you can't have everything in life.
Review 49:Only thing was, the bedroom could have done with a little diy. I mean, the TV was from like 1990.
Review 50:The location was stunning. Right on the beach! Breakfast was amazing. Dinner was amazing. The bar was amazing. Top class
Review 51:We loved everything
Review 52:Fantastic hotel, great room, amazing location, absolutely first class staff who made our stay amazing, would recomment to everyone, thanks for making our stay perfect
Review 53:Very tired and old rooms which are in desperate need of renovating.
Review 54:As part of the best western next door you get all the facilities which make this stay bearable.
Review 55:Where do I start?... The advertising on booking.com is misleading as it shows pictures of the Roker Hotel to which Beach Lodge is an annex. It is necessary to go to the Roker Hotel reception to get your keys to Beach Lodge, only to find that they don't work for the front door and you need to press in intercom to get in. When querying this back at the Hotel reception I was told that it was because they don't trust their guests and so like to keep track of comings and goings. The room... dingy, with poor, tired decoration. The door was ill fitting and each time someone opened the front door it sounded like someone was trying to get in the room. A view out onto a dirty courtyard covered with rubbish. The television worked after a fashion but was so noisy that I had to switch it off. When I complained to the Roker Hotel reception about all of the above and asked to see the manager, I was told he was not in today and I could speak to him in the morning.
Review 56:After the reception staff eventually called the manager at home, I managed to secure a refund and stay elsewhere; despite it costing a little more, the difference was night and day!
Review 57:I booked this thinking it was going to be of best western standards , it was a bed and breakfast place two houses away , it was basically a room with peeling paintwork with poor bathroom facilities , it was an airshow weekend ( not why I was there ) and the price I paid was extortionate . There was a disco in the car park ! If it was the best western I would have happily paid but not for a B&B
Review 58:Worse nights sleep of my life, very bad bed, unclean room, £140 for one night for poor value, unclean bad locks, TV didn't work, bed needs skipping and response from complaint Reception very posh beach view very poor
Review 59:Come every year good location
Review 60:We were not that much impressed with the accommodation itself. It was simply OK for a room you don't plan to spend much time in. We booked two rooms, a double and a single. Although it is named 'Beach View' Lodge, ironically the double room's window faced a wall :) the double room had a comfortable double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, a small bathroom with a shower and toilet. The single room was on the fourth floor (no elevator available) and no wardrobe was available. The building is old and has wooden flooring and stairs. Hence, we were plagued with creaky noises all night. The walls are very thin, you can hear people talking and snoring and god knows what else. Even turning on the plumbing! The entrance also had a fairly musty smell.
Review 61:Breakfast is served at the Best Western Roker Hotel, a three star accomodation next door. Breakfast was quite good and staff were all extremely helpful and friendly! The restaurants served extremely good food with a great service, and again, helpful and friendly staff!
Review 62:It was not clear that this is an annexe of the Roker Hotel which is next door and that you need to go to that hotel for reception.I ended up outside phoning asking how to get in! Also unclear is that you enter the parking via the other hotel entrance. There was no wifi in the lodge only the main hotel. Thus said staff were great, room was small but clean and bathroom fine!
Review 63:Location was great, lovely beach just over the road. Breakfast good.
Review 64:The TV was not working properly, the room was noisy and the decor was old and a little bit damaged
Review 65:The location was excellent, the staff extremely nice, friendly and helpful.
Review 66:Booked in with a baby, and with only just enough room to get round the bed and no storage there wasn't room for all of our luggage let alone travel cot. Luckily we had the other room so could swap. The room was also on the top floor with no lift so lugging baby gear was not fun.
Review 67:The room was fine, had everything we would need as a couple. Great location right on the beach next to good restaurants. Great breakfast included served in next door hotel. There was a mix up at booking, we booked 2 rooms but only one available in this lodge, however the owners also have the hotel along the road and promptly arranged another room there for us too.
Review 68:Very misleading pictures of lodge, bedroom was filthy, carpet had a damp patch and bedroom was like a prison cell, the walls were like cardboard and could hear snoring from the next room louder than the tv!!could not sleep!!!
Review 69:The breakfast was ok
Review 70:Great food variety for half board stays. Decent room with good sized bathroom. Air con and balcony over Main Street. Lovely staff and helpful reception. Not the nicest looking but is clean and only a 1 minute stroll to one of the most stunning beach views I've ever seen.
Review 71:The heated towel rail didn't work and I'm glad as the plastic bit off the side to cover the cables was loose.
Review 72:likes that they moved me without any fuss as the heater in my room didn't work and it wasn't very clean.
Review 73:That the Beach View lodge was unmanned and had no reception. That we were not aware we had to check in at The Roker hotel prior to booking. The car park to front was really busy and again never knew we could park in the Roker at the back until after booking in. The main entrance of the Beach View smelled a bit foosty on arrival.
Review 74:The roker hotel where we did eventually check in was gorgeous. The room was lovely and so was the amazing sea view.
Review 75:Out dated decor and over priced, some of this was definitely due to a gig at the stadium of light but still needed noting.
Review 76:All the staff were fantastic as was the location. We ate in their Italian restaurant and couldn't fault it either.
Review 77:my original room had been overbooked (despite me booking two months in advance) we were moved into the hotel which they said was an upgrade, but since we were closer to the bar it sounded like we were staying in nightclub as the DJ was on til 1 and the walls were super thin!
Review 78:good value for money, really cool building, free parking was handy and the location is nice.
Review 79:We stayed in the hotel and payed extra as I made a mistake on the booking. The room we were given with an en sweat shower room neither had a window, air con, or vent. We were stuck inside a storage room I think that had a bed tv and wardrobe in it. It was very hot and stuffy and we couldn't sleep without the door open. We were told it was the only room without a window . At 2am I had to go down to reception and ask for a fan. Even tho this was very noisy I had to have it on all night and day when we arrived back. When we had a shower we had to have the bedroom door open to let out the steam. I was told there is no more rooms and they let that room out for £90 a night. It's a dungeon for sure.
Review 80:Staff were friendly
Review 81:Toilet - smelly, on different floor too far from the room; Shower - boiling water or cold water in turn; Light - only one bulb works, very dark, no one bthers to replace; Location - only close to sea
Review 82:Breakfast
Review 83:there was 7 of us that travelled from middlesbrough. Only cost about 7 pound in a taxi to sunderland city centre. Great service, rooms were good although one was very small with just a double bed but done for what we needed it for. Family room was huge and catered for 7 people (not sleeping) At one time with plenty of room. Would definitely book again.
Review 84:Presumed I was in the hotel but was put in the beach view lodge instead. Tv in room was not working properly.
Review 85:Friendly and helpful staff . Nice location . Good breakfast.
Review 86:Very hard to find in the dark. Took us over half an hour to find it. Part of the big hotel nearby, but this we did not know until later. No staff at the lodge. Had to go to big hotel for the key. Tired room, loud buzz on TV. No view. Grubby.
Review 87:The location, and the breakfast.
Review 88:Smell in shower. Exposed electrical socket. Had to go to a 'different' hotel to check in. Attempted to overcharge. Tiny room - no bath, I'd booked a bathroom ! Poor - stay elsewhere - new Travelodge open now in Sunderland
Review 89:Nothing except reasonable location and clean linen
Review 90:organisation - or lack of!! no hot water on Saturday, guests not told of this. Asked for extra milk to take tablets with a hot drink, was told would be sent to the room, never came. Too much emphasis spent on 'Poetic Licence' and Tea Rooms, not enough on hotel care. old, neglected rooms, creaky floors. poor communication. Upgraded to 'executive room' - which meant an extra bed!! there were only 2 of us!! Supposed to be sea view, but we were directly above the new addition to the hotels, sign! Hated the stay apart from breakfast, although, coffee pot was smaller than teapot. Management need to re-invest in hotel services, standards are definitely down.
Review 91:Breakfast was good
Review 92:The room! Cleanliness was not the issue as that was good and the bed was comfortable too but the room was tiny (212) and generally very tired in terms of both decor and furnishings, including a 70's chic pink shower/toilet suite. Are they still allowed? Really in need of a refurb. With the room we were given the entry door crashed into shower room door if that had been left open when coming into room. The novelty value of this soon wore off! No wardrobe was provided only a small assortment of random hangers on the wall using a hook rack to hang your clothes from. Phone to reception was not working and had to use our mobile to contact reception when returning to room after dinner to find couldn't get any channels on the TV. The guy on reception was friendly and kindly offered to come to room but it was late and we declined the offer. He didn't know what issue was and was unable to help further.. Thirty minutes of perseverance later and eventually we managed to discover what the issue was and the C21st century was restored!. Surely this sort of thing is a 'room prepping' exercise and not one the customer needs to be having to resolve on arrival?. A bit lax that really and can't say it went down well. We saw other rooms the next morning in this block that were open for cleaning and some looked much larger and better furnished (wardrobes!) all round, so the quality of accommodation could be just related to some of the box rooms they're offering. But that was what we got allocated and overall it was a fairly disappointing experience accommodation wise. It's definitely time to get the builders in!
Review 93:Staff were very friendly, courteous and helpful. Facilities of associated Roker Hotel a couple of doors up were fairly good too. Recent refurb of bar and a lovely Italian restaurant downstairs who's staff went out of their way to rustle up a couple of pizzas for us despite our arriving at closing time. Lovely location overlooking North Sea.
Review 94:The bed we had was terrible. The room above came in late and we could hear everything from them.
Review 95:Reception Staff were brilliant. Breakfast great. The room was very large.
Review 96:No hot water in sink, small old ensuite no window and broken air vent. Stained bedding, but was changed when I complained. Lack of organisation at breakfast time.... Staff need better management. No wifi in room.
Review 97:Best western hotel in process of refurb looking good. Beautiful views of pier, beach & lighthouse, ample free parking. Tea & coffee facilities.
Review 98:The beds. They are just so uncomfortable.
Review 99:The Staff were incredible. We had a few issues that needed resolution (the bed), and a 7 am fire alarm fault that messed up our first night. All staff did everything to fix our situation.
Review 100:Took me ages to find because of the name change. I was at the back which was a bit shabby overlooking a carpark/courtyard.
Review 101:The view if you are at the front is great overlooking the sea. Breakfast was good, which is at the Best Western Hitel two doors up. Dont look for the Roker Lodge as the b&b is now called Ocean View Hotel
Review 102:It would have helped me find the place had booking.com actually published the correct name for the hotel which, I was told, had me notified. It would (I hope Booking.com are listening) saved me from driving up and down a dark road looking for something that did not exist.
Review 103:Everything especially the staff who were as good as it gets and helped me calm down. See next entry for details
Review 104:there was nothing we could complain about
Review 105:We booked 2 rooms in the lodge when we arrived we were offered a 2 bedroomed apartment which we accepted. Our stay was excellent & the apartment meant we were together. The staff were excellent & couldn't have been more helpful. We had the buffet breakfast which we all enjoyed. We will definitely be staying again.
Review 106:, light and shower switches to high for my friend in bathroom so if she had of stayed on her own would of been veryaggrevating, but when stafftold they promised to look into it, so hopefully they will.
Review 107:we had sea view, room was basic but clean, breakfasts in main hotel very good, and we had late coffee and cake one afternoon, staff very accomodating.lodge is clean but very basic, so dont expect anything fancy,
Review 108:One twin room booked but room given was 4 single beds and very hot. One single room booked, very small room and heating didn't work. Was given a heater Price given on Booking.com was not accepted at hotel, had to pay approx £50 more. Booking.com blame hotel and the hotel blames Booking.com - customer loses!
Review 109:the extension leads and broken bedside light were nothing if not dangerous. not much of a view looking at laundry
Review 110:something not in an annex would be good.
Review 111:Radiator filling up all night long ( noisy ), no heating on one of the coldest nights of the year , our door rattling everytime someone went out of the main door , poor poor nights sleep
Review 112:Breakfast ( not in the lodge but in next doors roker hotel )
Review 113:We were however rite at the top of the hotel looking out the back of the building, not a good view beds little hard we couldn't take a bath or shower the first day as the water was cold we did call down and it was looked into straight away this was just due to high demand of hot water that day our dislikes were deffo outnumbered by the likes and we would recommend a stay here and would return
Review 114:We arrived expecting to stay at the lodge but was told we were In the hotel (excellent) breakfast was great staff very friendly couldn't do enough for us,as it was new years eve we were undecided what to do for the eve so we didn't book in for food they did however squeeze Us in for a meal at the Italian restaurant next door at short notice when we rang from our room we were v happy overall fantastic couple of days would highly recommend
Review 115:Nothing
Review 116:Friendliness of the Hotel Staff We also had a meal in the Italian Restaurant and the meal & staff were Excellent Definitely will stay again
Review 117:Parking is limited if you have a van as I did but got parked in the end
Review 118:Excellent service came with a fan fair welcome over the speakers :) ok just some loud Irish music in the reception which the staff and myself found amusing which after a long journey was a nice icebreaker. Asked if I needed a meal even though the restaurant next door was about to close but they would sort something out. Again nice and thoughtful touch but I declined as bed was calling.
Review 119:Didn't like being in the annexed a couple of doors down. I was in the main building last time I stayed. Annexe is still being worked on to bring it up to scratch.
Review 120:Liked the very helpful receptionist and the bar area.
Review 121:Was very busy for breakfast on Sunday only one person serving all food was cold, we was suppose to be in a quite room which it wasn't. The beds were very uncomfortable and the shower was not suitable to wash a dog let alone us. The rooms decoration I.e. Wallpaper was falling off wall and ceiling.
Review 122:Is in a lovely location
Review 123:Could not put meal and drinks on my room number- have done in the past. Reason given was for a new computer system! Ordered fish and chips for main course. Table clearance was very slow.Very slow service-waited 55 minutes from 7.15pm to 8.15pm
Review 124:Very good quality food on the bar menu
Review 125:Roker lodge room was far too small bed wasn't very comfortable but for what we paid couldn't really grumble.
Review 126:The location and the breakfast. Staff were very courteous very friendly.
Review 127:Large room with 4 beds (booked a double room) this was an advantage as the mattress on the double bed was very poor & we had to sleep in the single beds. Spring on mattress were coming through the cover. Hotel reception not interested. spoiled a birthday treat shall not return.
Review 128:Dining area & large room.
Review 129:every thing in the actual lodge was awful, poor lighting ,shower not working, view out of the window was terrible.
Review 130:staff and food was good in the hotel
Review 131:The shower in my room was poor low pressure and luke warm. I was moved to another room and that was just and that was as bad.
Review 132:Room clean and tidy. Good breakfast and helpfull staff.
Review 133:Room was dated in terms of furniture and decor and no lamps next to the bed.
Review 134:We loved the Roker especially our fantastic surprise of a wonderful sea view. Huge room and lovely big four poster bed and fluffy towels. Fab breakfast too!
Review 135:Separate rooms from main hotel, poor stocking on bar, slow service from staff, WIFI wasn't through out.
Review 136:Good location, good local brewery beers on bar, breakfast included.
Review 137:We were fortunate enough to be upgraded from a family room to an apartment. The accommodation was good, clean and just what we needed after a long journey from London. Many thanks to all.
Review 138:rooms were awful plaster coming off walls water marks on ceiling dirty tissues splatted on outside window, noise in both rooms we were in was horrendous we had four hours sleep in the two nights we stayed, water pipes noise was horrendous, every time someone came in the door slammed and everything in the room rattled, this went on all night, im so surprised this is a best western, Seriously all this place is, is a nightclub with rooms for drunken idiots to sleep in, the noise from the bar was way nosier than it needed to be, they do not inform you of this in the booking. I will never ever stay here again the worst nights sleep ive had in a hotel.
Review 139:Staff were very helpful Italian Restaurant was really good Breakfast was good
Review 140:Not much really. It had everything I needed for the price paid.
Review 141:Its attached to a bigger hotel where you can use their facilities and parking. It backs onto a really big park (Roker Park) which was great for my son. It also is on the sea front so again great for my little one. Within 1 mile of a couple of Metro stations.
Review 142:Rooms are spacious enough but a little outdated, couldn't sleep as was very stuffy.
Review 143:Booked for a wedding which was at the Roker Hotel next door, not realising that the lodge belongs to the hotel as well. When we got there there had been an admin error meaning the lodge was overbooked, as a result we got upgraded into the roker hotel itself for nothing, so overall value for money wise we saved about £30-£40 and still got to stay in the main hotel. Very happy overall
