Reviews for Dovecliff Hall Hotel
Review 1:Nothing
Review 2:The location was very good with lovely view from all aspects. Beautiful Georgian house with original features and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 3:Staff were no where to be seen upon arrival for check in. My partner and I had to physically phone reception whilst stood there in order to gain any attention, and even then seemed reluctant to assist. Later that evening, I had to search for a member of staff to order room service as the phone didn't seem to connect to the desk. We searched for instructions on how to use the phone in case we were using it incorrectly, but there were no clear instructions to be found. Further more, the member of staff who I explained this to lacked the motivation to advise me how to use it should we need anything else. Consequently this put me off indulging in anything further that the hotel had to offer on the menu. At check-out, I felt as though I had to direct the payment process myself, as the receptionist (different to the one the previous night) was very distant and showed no interest in whether or not my partner and I had enjoyed our stay. Although it seems a small factor, the fact that she did not even care to say "goodbye" as we left was a huge overlook on her part at basic customer service skills. If it were based on the property itself, we would absolutely return. But based solely on the quality of customer service from the staff, we would not return nor would we recommend, which is a great shame as it has the potential to be a wonderful place to stay.
Review 4:location and character of the property was wonderful, room was spacious and well decorated, as well as the bathroom/shower.
Review 5:The sash windows let in a very cold draft and the wardrobe door appeared to be missing a handle. The blinds in the bathroom could have done with a bit of love but, these were minor quibbles. The food was tasty although we only had a main and the a la carte menu was perhaps a little pricey compared to the set menu. At breakfast it would have been nice to have the choice of soya milk for my partner. But, as I say small points.
Review 6:The setting and grounds were pleasant, the rooms a good size with period features and I found the staff to be friendly and polite. Given the price it was very good value for money.
Review 7:Reception wasn't manned when we arrived but a minor complaint. The staff were very busy.
Review 8:Although there was a large party in the main dining area. We were still able to reserve an evening meal and a smaller library area was converted into a dining room. Very romantic and private. The service wasn't affected during our meal. Excellent food. Free wifi was excellent. Rooms were spacious and well maintained. Breakfast was lovely.
Review 9:There was a large private party on Saturday night so we were made to feel in the way and herded out of the Bar, There should have been someone on Reception to direct guests to the alternative Lounge, rather than allowing us to get to the Bar and then chasing us out Breakfast on the first day was not as ordered. The waitress never apologised, asked if we were sure we were wrong and just stood with the plate until we accepted it!
Review 10:The setting and general ambiance of the Hotel
Review 11:The toilet seat was broken, twice my breakfast arrived and still was not what I'd ordered, reception tried to over charge me for our stay and I had to show her the booking confirmation on my phone.
Review 12:Quiet location
Review 13:Two light bulbs had broken including the one over the bathroom mirror. Perhaps light bulbs should be included on the daily check list?
Review 14:The hotel has character with spacious, comfortable rooms, and exceptionally friendly staff. The décor is tasteful and the room we had overlooked the river Dove. The relaxing sound of water tumbling over the weir were the only sounds we heard.
Review 15:Please upgrade the basic Nescafe coffee in the bedrooms to match that in the resteraunt.
Review 16:Relaxed atmosphere with a touch of old fashioned grandeur, Only there for one night but would love to use the hotel as a base for a longer stay in the future.
Review 17:Bereakfast was well cooked and presented
Review 18:We booked and paid for a superior room, the room we were given (room 6) was direcly over a wedding pary disco and the noise was intolerable and we could not sleep, we called reception, it was answered by the bar manager (where was the receptionist) and explained the problem and asked to be moved. Within a few minuets he got back to us and arranged for us to be moved to a quite room, although it was standard room it was at least quite. He also said he could not understand why the receptionist allocated us this room knowing it would be very noisy up till midnight. This begs the question why the receptionist did not advise us that the room was over the wedding party and would be noisy and give us the option to choose another room, this suggests a complete lack of awarenes of how the hotel functions, or perhaps pressure to sell a more expensive room. The second room we were given (room 17)was on the ground floor, bedroom was ok and a good size and on first sight the bathroom was also ok, however on close inspection it was clear the bathroom had only ever been subject to a superficial clean, the bath sink and toilet were ok but the plastic beading at the top of the tiles was an absolute discrace, thick with dust and cob webs, the window was black with mould and thick with dust. It's a shame that this place could be very good with just a little bit more effort and and pride from the owner/manager. We were told when we checkd out we would receive a call from the manager to apollogise in person, not happen yet !
Review 19:Nothing!
Review 20:This would have to be one of the best kept secrets in the area. Generous sized room and en suite. Beautiful grounds, no noise, great restaurant, good service, great value for money
Review 21:could hear people around 3am returning from a night out but seemed to echo around the main hall. they wasn't shouting just normal talking
Review 22:Loved the surroundings, food was really good dinner and breakfast.
Review 23:It would have been nice if Water feature/ fountain was in working order.
Review 24:Very relaxing stay. Hotel had nice grounds in a nice location just outside of village. Plenty of available car parking.nice conservatory to sit and have breakfasts / meals.
Review 25:In the first room we were offered, the bed was a little bigger than a single. not what I would expect in this sort of hotel. We were moved when we complained to a twin room.
Review 26:Not been decorated in years. Lino in bathroom, yuk. Acyrlic bed spread, yuk. Old furnishings. Very very average. Would not stay again & would not recommend.
Review 27:We felt that the hotel was tired and needed a lo of updating and investment in the gardens particularly as the hotel has weddings there. We felt more could be done in the way of exploiting the buildings.
Review 28:We loved the setting and being able to sit in the gardens.
Review 29:The room was on the small side , and the wardrobe door was broken and draw.
Review 30:Had a very enjoyable stay, Staff very pleasant , Grounds amazing . Building fantastic . Lovely view over gardens from our room.
Review 31:I have nothing to say that could not fault the Hotel.
Review 32:Quiet/Peaceful/ Lovely Views to Garden & River Dove Weir/ Spacious Comfortable Rooms/ Excellent Good Service/ Lovely Food/ Close to A38&A50 trunk roads for ease of access.
Review 33:We knew that there was a wedding taking place during our stay(not told when booking on line) following a call from the hotel and that there would be no restaurant available in the evening. Not a problem as we went to Burton on Trent for a very nice meal anyway. Unfortunately, the bar was also out of bounds except to the wedding party guest so we effectively paid for room and breakfast only (had paid for a premium room). With regard to breakfast, my english breakfast was very good, however, there was no selection for the 'continental' and you had to order from the staff from a very limited number of choices.
Review 34:Location was excellent and close to Burton on Trent for eating out, room was very clean and comfortable.
Review 35:some dust in one of the furniture in my room
Review 36:the hotel , and garden around and the view on the river from the room. Perfect restaurant in the conservatory , ideal for diner with customers.
Review 37:Your kidding me.. Absolutely everything was perfect. Just one thing the old fountain would be amazing brought back to life ....
Review 38:Staff were very accommodating even making us three sandwich plates when the chef had had left, highly appreciated , Thankyou again , and the hotel grounds were beautiful..
Review 39:only downside was athe neighbours large dog who woke us all up in the middle of the night with continuous barking
Review 40:the food was great staff very helpful, everywhere very clean, the grounds are very well kept.
Review 41:Set in a beautiful old house and grounds. Accommodation in rooms was spacious and good bathroom and shower facilities. We had one of each. Used restaurant one night and it was adequate.
Review 42:The fact I accessed my room through a side entrance -almost like a staff side door and the room was very basic for the 4star rating.. The bathroom needed a good spray of bleach in corners and skirting boards... Wouldn't stay again.
Review 43:Liked the look of the place when I booked it The staff were friendly and helpful
Review 44:Weather cannot be helped. However the car park was not cleared of snow and ice resulting in me slipping and really hurting my Cossacks.I am still suffering days later. More effort should have been done. It's not hard to grit the car parks and foot ways.
Review 45:Breakfast was good. Setting also very nice.some areas of the hotel could use some attention.
Review 46:I was a bit disappointed in the state of restoration - a bit shabby & not as elegant as the photos would have you believe. Our family had 2 standard rooms, both with wonderful views of the River Dove. Our bed was sagging in the middle & the pillows were the foam, very bouncy kind. Not very comfortable at all. The showers were terrible, the water temperature dangerously changing unexpectedly. Maybe the higher priced rooms don't have these issues. Overall, for the price we paid, I expected well done elegance, & this we did not receive.
Review 47:Beautiful grounds, lovely old property & a beautiful drive to my family's home in Abbots Bromley where we celebrated Christmas. Breakfast served in the conservatory was quite nice, all the staff we met were friendly & helpful. The kitchen was closed for dinner due to the holidays, but a cold meal with soup could be arranged. Not a problem for us at all.
Review 48:The bedroom was far too hot, so my sleep was disturbed because of it. On the other hand, the restaurant was a tad chilly.
Review 49:The comfort and friendly atmosphere, not to mention the scenery.
Review 50:We were in room four - there has been a roof leak or water tank leak at some time. Although dried out the ceiling needs redecoration. Lovely room though.
Review 51:Nice rooms - very clean and very comfortable. Excellent caring staff. Very good quality meals (breakfast and dinner). Our daughter and son with partners were in rooms two and three . Smaller rooms but in good order. Thank You!
Review 52:The place lacked atmosphere as we were the only staying guests that night. One other couple were having dinner.
Review 53:Beautiful Hotel & staff very friendly--room lovely ,spacious & very comfortable.
Review 54:Some areas tired Phone in room did not work so to call reeption needed to use my mobile. Would replace phone as old and looked it.
Review 55:The building is beautiful
Review 56:Water pressure could be better in showers
Review 57:Food particularly the breakfast eggs absolutely beautiful Staff were very polite and responded very well to any requests
Review 58:My only adverse comment is that the pillows on the bed were very hard which did affect the quality of my night's sleep
Review 59:The a la carte menu was excellent with high quality food nicely presented. The wine list was very good and well priced. The bedroom was very good with good facilities. Overall we were delighted.
Review 60:Room and bed were both a little on the small size, but I guess that is part of the old style charm.
Review 61:A beautiful old building, very picturesque grounds. Some very nice period features - we enjoyed exploring. The staff were all super friendly and took great care of us at breakfast - preparing a lovely vegetarian full English. Room was clean, bed comfy.
Review 62:The only negative was the shower head which needs replacing as it is covered in lime scale. Other than that everything else was perfect!
Review 63:The location was wonderful and the staff were outstanding. My room (10) was very large with a huge bed that was really comfortable. A surprise for the price I paid.
Review 64:A little disappointed that the bedroom did not get a hoover or dusting in the 3days we were there.
Review 65:Super large room with view of the river and fields. Very peaceful and quiet. Good choice of breakfast. Very close to places of interest we wanted to see.
Review 66:Breakfast was disappointing, not much variety & felt rushed. The decor was outdated, doesn't look much like the pictures. Room was disappointing. A little overpriced.
Review 67:Loved the country house & gardens. The food was fantastic, wine however very pricey! 40 mins from alton towers & Birmingham city centre, ideal!
Review 68:Not sure if they were picking on me :-) as I stayed in the hotel with a work colleague who had no problems. But some lights in my room didn't work, I asked for an iron when it came the iron didn't work and the ironing board didn't work, but all sorted quickly by staff. At breakfast I asked for a pot of tea and it came with no tea in it?? As I say I think I was unlucky.
Review 69:It is a lovely house almost stately in feel. Very comfortable in a rural setting. Slept very well. Staff were helpful and pleasant.
Review 70:Dinner menu limited No window to open room had French doors but not possible to sleep with them open at night
Review 71:lovely staff, pleasant helpful, peaceful location, good breakfast, vegetarian sausages available. Nice grounds. room good size with private patio area to sit outside room
Review 72:Booked a superior room but didn't feel like we had recieved one ...carpet stained and bathroom looked like it had been newly decorated but tiles & ledges hadn't been cleaned properly and could of done with a new toilet seat ...shower took ages to get warm (needs up dating )
Review 73:The hotel was set in a picturesque location ...had lots of character ..grounds were lovely .....staff were lovely and welcoming ...food excellent ...barman/waiter very efficient and friendly ..room was nice but there is a but ...overall lovely and will stay again.
Review 74:They didn't offer any food on a Sunday Evening, We arrived on Sunday afternoon and were not made aware until we arrived. We had nothing to eat until Mondays breakfast. The shower was cold. We ordered a bottle of Shiraz - but they did not have any!
Review 75:The breakfast was good quality - but there was no fruit.
Review 76:Rather old fashioned decor and the bedroom was a bit tired. The curtains didn't pull properly and the main light in the bedroom was out. Pillows not very comfortable .
Review 77:Breakfast was delicious as long as you don,t want cereal. Good wifi in lounges. Nice conservatory and tasty dinner. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 78:Unwelcoming. Once they had established that we were not having dinner there, they lost interest. The room was in a separate part of the building and could only be accessed by an outside route, fortunately it was not raining. The public rooms were ok, but not of a standard commensurate with the price.
Review 79:The breakfast was good and the property looked impressive as you approached it.
Review 80:No sorry cannot think of anything :)
Review 81:Everything, staff very caring and helpful. Food great. Gardens lovely. Room comfortable. We are planning to stay again next year, it's great for Donington Race Track
Review 82:Shower had sudden near boiling heat alternately with freezing cold every minute or so lasting about one second.
Review 83:Room location and grassy outlook, quiet. Two chairs and table catering for two people, a plus.
Review 84:The directions to the hotel from the south were not good. We got hopelessly lost in Burton at the end of a long journey from Dorset. It would have been better to direct us to Dovecliff from the Northern end of Burton off the A38.
Review 85:A very quiet and relaxing position.
Review 86:It was very peaceful and the grounds were lovely. Having just stayed in another hotel on a busy road it was great to have such a tranquil setting. Staff were extremely accommodating and friendly making the stay a pleasure. We were visiting Donington, so great location for that.
Review 87:When mentioned to staff that she had forgotten to put extra £20 on bill for dog she hardly said thank you..wish I hadn't mentioned it!
Review 88:Ground floor room opening onto garden v.good for dog!
Review 89:Beds are too small should be queen size minimum or two singles. No lift to bedroom floor made access difficult for the mobility impared members of our party
Review 90:There is nothing not to like
Review 91:This hotel is in a lovely building in parkland and offers exceptional value for money. The staff, many of them very young, are very peasant and helpful
Review 92:Shame you couldn't walk down to the river below. Food was good was not exceptional.
Review 93:Excellent location close to main road but felt right out in the country. Lovely setting for restaurant and breakfast room.
Review 94:Poor table service No opening windows in bathroom Faulty light Rubbish plasma (yes plasma) TV Noisy bed Hot room Dirty tableware Hapless manager Broken toilet seat
Review 95:Position & Setting
Review 96:Like in the most location's in the UK and Ireland, when you're comming from the continent, you're meaning about, what a good coffee is, is different
Review 97:everything. The location is a little bit outside but, the flair of the house, the excellent staff and the wonderfull garden makes my stay unforgetable. Specially the kitchen is a dream,I wonder where the Michelin hat's are.
Review 98:our room was not very comfortable, the food in the evening was only reasonable, the breakfast lousy and the service therefore apaulling
Review 99:The hotel lies in a beautiful environment and the public rooms and the garden restaurant are nice
Review 100:Room decor a little tired in places but this did not distract from our stay.
Review 101:Friendly staff, quiet and comfortable room with good breakfast. In good location for visiting Alton Towers.
Review 102:Breakfast start at 7.00am a little late for business travelers (but worth the wait!)
