Reviews for Rex Hotel
Review 1:Booking.com,didn't let me know that the hotel shuts down Tuesday22nd December. So had to move to a guesthouse round the corner. Will stay there in future,as I'd driven 250 miles, to be told that the hotel shuts down, & asked if you'd been in touch with me, and you hadn't.
Review 2:Excellent location, and breakfast was top notch.
Review 3:There is a night club next to it and you get no sleep what so ever don't stay here beds r ok but no duvet just a blanket and sheet blankets went out with the ark
Review 4:breakfast was good
Review 5:Everything else, it was dirty, cold, uncared for, basically a very old hotel in need of a complete renovation & new management.
Review 6:The receptionist was very helpful
Review 7:The manager was on reception one day and couldn't have been more rude. She was on a personal call when we approach the desk and didn't even end the call. She seemed annoyed we had interrupted her. Then was extremely abrupt and unhelpful.
Review 8:Our view accross the sea and the room were lovely. Breakfast was good too. Amy, on reception, was amazing. So helpful and friendly!
Review 9:I had previously discussed bringing our dog and was quoted 74 pounds however as soon as we arrived we were charged 94 pounds. I was greeted in a very miserable way upon arrival and to a hotel which looked closed. The curtains were hanging off the rail, the blankets on the beds looked filthy and torn, the bath was dirty and obviously hadn't been cleaned. The nightclub below ran from 11-5am and so allowed for zero sleep. Gruff notices about loss of keys or stealing of coat hangers hung on the walls .....truly miserable
Review 10:Sea view
Review 11:We were unaware that that on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, a Night Club from the depths of the hotel housed a very loud night-club. We were offered ear-plugs. We still love the hotel, but would be careful of the days.
Review 12:The view from the room was magnificent - wide angle vision of the sea! Very friendly staff and wonderful breakasts.
Review 13:There wasn't much choice at the bar when I went down for a mixer. In fact you should make the bar a bit more contemporary add a few craft ales etc. You never know. I think Whitley is due a good bar! The view from my room of Parade Hairy Lemon etc all closed down is not very appealing
Review 14:Always loved the Rex. The carpets are a bit worn and it could do with a lick of paint but it's a grand old dame and comfortable to stay in.
Review 15:Top floor and furthest away room. When I enquired about this was told because of the night club below. What happens to the poor guests when hotel is full. Had to pay a £10 deposit for remote control for the TV only to get a foreign language and no matter what we done could not get this changed. Gave up trying although reception staff offered to come up and try. Why should this be the case!!!!
Review 16:The staff were lovely.
Review 17:The night club downstairs was the biggest issue luckily we had been out ourselves so only had half an hr to endure before it closed but it felt like we were in the nightclub itself!! When checking in and going to the lift we had to get out of the way for a lad being chucked out of the club (through the reception of the hotel!) with three doormen and his girlfriend yapping behind him! Not the best first impression! Recommend you either go out all night yourself if staying here or stay on a night that the club isn't open as its a lovely budget hotel but the noise was the only downside.
Review 18:Lovely big room, dated decor but in good condition and clean. Cooked breakfast was good
Review 19:Was awoke by noisy people who banged the door in the early hours didn't bother mentioning this because I imagine they'd gone in the morning. The swing doors outside our room were just left to bang shut but this isn't the hotels fault it's ignorant guests with little or no regard for others sleeping
Review 20:Loved the sea view and the warmth and friendliness of the staff. Been coming here for 26 years. This hotel is a grand one and has lots of happy memories for me I travelled from leicester nearly 200 miles and prefer the Rex to any other hotel in the area
Review 21:Needs a little TLC in places. Appears to have had damp issue at rear end of property some time in the past. Bathroom would benefit from curtains at windows to preserve heat.
Review 22:Overlooking the beach, good speedy breakfast
Review 23:Dim rooms, poor wifi - doesn't get much beyond reception, inadequate bedding - one blanket. Didn't like being woken up at 2am 3 Fridays in a row by the beat of the music from the nightclub 3 floors below.
Review 24:Good breakfasts, friendly staff, reasonable price.
Review 25:Never knew that the disco attached to the hotel stayed open till 3am, until after we arrived & even though we were located on the 3rd floor, sound still carried, keeping me awake on & off from 1 am thru till 3am...
Review 26:VFM
Review 27:Late night disco within the building - like having it in your room. Requested move to another room for second night - no problem there. Only take rooms on top floor and facing seafront. Wi-fi in rooms poor - effectively unusable. Poor heating
Review 28:Location on front and free parking good. Breakfast cooked to order was good.
Review 29:It is situated above a nightclub so if you are staying at the weekend do not expect to be able to get to sleep much before 3am. Not only does the music carry through into the rooms you may be entertained by the behaviour of the patrons of the nightclub as they leave.
Review 30:Great breakfast and views of the beach
Review 31:I didn't have a bad experience, however, the room could have been better cleaned :-( The tv cabinet had a lot more than a couple of days of residual dust in it, and I found a bottle top down the side of the bed that certainly wasn't mine! (and some instructions on how to turn the tv on would have been VERY helpful) x
Review 32:The reception staff were lovely and helpful, as were the dining room staff x Room was more than adequate for our over night stay. The Hotel has a lovely location on the promenade x
Review 33:Decor very tired looking, with threadbare carpets. Stairs, corridors and rooms all in need of redecoration. Had to request change of room as first room we were offered curtains were hanging off the rail, it was very cold, the heating did not appear to work. The nightclub music permeated the whole building even though we were on third floor. Breakfast finished at 09.30 am, too early on a Sunday especially as we had been kept awake until after 2am with the nightclub music.
Review 34:Great view of the coast
Review 35:We had no idea that the level of noise from the nightclub below us would be as distressing as it was. Inside our room was literally vibrating from the noise. The room was extremely outdated and the bathroom was particularly grotty. The staff were quite simply not interested in our feedback. Undoubtedly the worst night I have ever spent anywhere.
Review 36:No wi fi in my room,,,there was a shower but it was dripping water,,,strong draft from the window,,no quilt, there was a sheet and old Blunkett and two poor quality belows,, £10 deposet for the tv remot control ,and you have to ask for the hair dryer .all in all I can not recommend it to any one,
Review 37:On the sea front.
Review 38:not enough bedding, so quite a chilly night. A duvet is needed, not just a blanket.
Review 39:Fantastic sea view from our enormous bedroom - best in Whitley Bay, I'm sure!
Review 40:Very small musty (but clean) room. Ground floor night club and extra-noisy lift didn't help sleep. The bar closing early because of computer failure!
Review 41:Excellent value for money. Good breakfast with first-class service. Pleasant staff. Smart public rooms.
Review 42:In my room and some common areas the décor was a little tired and in need of a make over, but it was nonetheless very clean and comfortable.
Review 43:I had a fantastic week long stay made especially good by the friendly welcoming staff. The location was also excellent. Breakfast was extremely good. The hotel was a real find and I would gladly return.
Review 44:wifi - works when stood at Reception otherwise it might as well not exist. Rooms are a bit gloomy - 1 wall mounted lamp. The Deep nightclub which booms on a Thursday night/Friday morning.
Review 45:Good breakfasts. Friendly staff. Decent sized beds - with sheets and a blanket. Towels changed daily if they need it or not.
Review 46:Booked two double rooms and on the day of arrival told we would get one double and two singles. Complained to 'Booking.com' and we felt the accommodation provided was deliberately disgusting because of the complaint - filthy carpets, mould on the ceilings, stale food in drawers (photo evidence). What are the Whitley Bay Health Dept doing - asleep or on holidays!! Disgraceful
Review 47:Little to like about this filthy hovel
Review 48:The disco on Saturday night went on until 3 pm with the usual drunken behaviour and pounding beat kept us awake until 3! We should have been told when we booked the room not when we arrived as it was too late then to find somewhere else!
Review 49:Good position on the sea front
Review 50:Shame about the nightclub directly under the bedroom windows, complete with screaming revellers at 2 in the morning. Lumpy mattress without the benefit of a mattress cover. A radiator that was unable to be turned down so an unpleasantly hot room, open the window and you have the noise of the nightclub.....
Review 51:Good location, cheap and cheerful.
Review 52:Need new Carpet & remember to double check cleaning of rooms.
Review 53:We had a nice double bed. Breakfast options were good & they served them quickly.
Review 54:Refused 2 bedrooms. Heating not working and hotel only supplies sheets and 1 blanket. No quilts. Crazy. Wasn't expecting much but warmth I think is a fairly basic requirement. Room I eventually stayed in was large and warm enough for the single blanket to be sufficient. Very very tired hotel.
Review 55:Receptionist was helpful.
Review 56:no hot water in the first room we were put in, the room smelt of smoke, wallpaper hanging off the walls, shower didn't work in the second room we were put in, the third room we were moved to was livable 'just' we had hot water and a lovely sea view. Luckily we just had to spend one night there.
Review 57:We knew about Fri/Sat night club beforehand but you should be prepared for it. Our room on 2nd floor sea view was nice but close to the noise. Fire alarm at 3am was an added surprise, apparently from the night club. Told it was a test but no prior warning.
Review 58:Good location, car park, fabulous large sea view room.
Review 59:Hotel was very tired despite excellent attempts at improving decor e.g in corridors by rooms. But in room there were lots of areas, which although clean, looked very shabby in corners where woodwork had deteriorated. But we didn't pay a lot so OK! Entrance lobby was not welcoming.
Review 60:We had a sea view and room was spacious.
Review 61:noise from nightclub below on the last night we stayed
Review 62:great value for money staff very friendly and very helpful-peter an excellent host --thank you for coffee and JAMMY DODGERS
Review 63:There is a night club next door on the ground level and incessant techno beats kept me awake until 3 in the morning. A difficult one for them
Review 64:A nice and very well priced hotel in the fading grandeur of this seaside town. I'd stay again, but if in a quiet room
Review 65:The cleaners should pay attention to the shower curtains because the bottom of ours was disgusting.
Review 66:Room size and sea view was excellent. Breakfast was more than adequate and the stay was well worth the money.
Review 67:Good location, can walk everywhere, soft play, swimming pool, park all close by, lots to amuse children, portobello restaurant across road was lovely amazing value for money gorgeous food, sea view from window, nice big comfortable room and beds and quiet, good breakfast, nice friendly staff would return again
Review 68:Generally run down, level of cleanliness poor. Run on a shoestring. Breakfast sausages horrible
Review 69:Prompt response to request for a clean shower curtain. Art Deco interior is interesting tho shabby Breakfast substantial - bacon tended to be charred, mushrooms tasty
Review 70:Can't avoid the noise from the nightclub on weekend nights but we were given fair warning prior to booking.
Review 71:Location, breakfast and value for money.
Review 72:The club that takes up all of the ground floor and shakes the building until 3am - it's impossible to sleep
Review 73:The sea front location and the locality to the metro
Review 74:The heating was extremely high during the night and it made our sleep a bit difficult. Also, there is a club under the hotel and I would be quite anoying at night. Anyway, it is worth it.
Review 75:Its location is awesome, in front of the sea. The breakfast was ok, english plus some continental complements. The yellow line (subway) is 5min far from the hotel and takes you to Newcastle's Center in 40min for 4,50GBP (day ticket). The rooms were big and the bathroom was fine; the bed was confortable and overall it was very clean.
Review 76:it is a lovely hotel needs uplifting as it is very tired couldn't say that we disliked any thing
Review 77:it was on the sea front beautiful views very helpful staff by one and lovely breakfast
Review 78:Room & property in need of renovation. Nightclub pounding music till 3am. Bring earplugs. Heater cannot be controlled and on full heat all the time. Had to sleep with windows open.
Review 79:Seaview room.
Review 80:The noise and music from `the Deep` disco on the ground floor of the hotel, which unfortunately continued until 3.00-3.30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Review 81:The large comfortable room, the seaside view and the splendid full English breakfast.
Review 82:See above - clubs in the area spoil your sleep, very basic accommodation, but okay if you're on a tight budget.
Review 83:The hotel is right next to and top of 3 night clubs who have little regard for noise violation and played their thumping music until all hours of the morning - not much sleel was had. The room was also boiling hot and the heater couldn't be turned down. It wasn't as if we paid a fortune though. It wasn't terrible but I can only recommend it if you're on a tight budget.
Review 84:Breakfast only being served till 9.30 am on a weekend, the fight outside the nightclub on the ground floor of the hotel.
Review 85:Excellent location and large room with sea view.
Review 86:Many parts of the hotel are in dire need of decoration and general upgrading
Review 87:The price of £35 a night with breakfast accurately reflected the relative quality of the hotel.
Review 88:First room had few issue's but have been relocated to better one
Review 89:View and breakfast was great.mattress was hit and miss so depends what you get, also it was quiet during my stay so had a good keep ,even when night club downstairs was open
Review 90:Although I had known beforehand about the nightclub the noise was horrendous & to top it off the fire alarm went off 15mins after the club closed.
Review 91:Location was good as was the breakfast. Night staff were friendly
Review 92:Best possible money can't buy view from your room in an out of dated hotel. If you are on a budget, you'll be delighted at their room and price.
Review 93:The first night we slept beautifully however on Thursday night the nightclub on ground floor was in full swing from 11pm-3am. Meant absolutely no sleep for me until 3.30am. They mention it on website but one has very little idea how noisy and annoying it can be.
Review 94:The staff were friendly, beds were comfortable and bathroom clean and well stocked.
Review 95:The only negative thing I have to say is the music from the adjoining night club Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights is very loud! Not the fault of the hotel but light sleepers be warned. Some sound proofing perhaps?
Review 96:I have been visiting Whitley by for several years and always stay at The Rex. Looking directly over the beach and North Sea the location is perfect as it is just a few minutes walk from the Metro station. The staff are friendly and helpful and the lovely cooked breakfast included in the room price is a bonus.
Review 97:I liked everything , but wi-if wouldn't work but that was something to do with my I~phone . Just a pre-warning , apparently I had to remove some settings etc but I didn't have a clue , but didn't really need it any ways so it wasn't really a problem.
Review 98:The basics . Clean . Staff very helpful & accommodating we love the place . The breakfast was first class with good selection . Value for money.
Review 99:Was NOT informed of nightclub from 11pm until 3am until we were booked in! Bath & shower were an absolute disgrace. You need a ladder to climb in & out of it
Review 100:The location of hotel on beach front was fab. The view across the sea from our room was perfect.
Review 101:The location as a nightclub was underneath. I was worried about my vehicle as it as parked out front. The carpets were thread bear on the stair cases. In need of a refurbishment.
Review 102:Staff were Friendly, breakfast was nice. I got what I expected. I would stay there again, but park my vehicle elsewhere.
Review 103:No Wi-Fi in rooms, only in public areas. TV very small in corner of room. You had to pay a £10 deposit to get a TV remote control! Some refurbs required.
Review 104:Nice big room with a sea view. Good breakfast choices and cheery & friendly waiters at breakfast. They have a lift. Good parking.
Review 105:Very noisy from Night club next door which kept us awake on the thursday night.
Review 106:Big bedroom with lots of space & cupboards .View from window looking at the sea.
Review 107:the location and the staff and the parking the works in progress when completed should return the hotel to its obvious former glory and we look forward to returning thereafter
Review 108:WiFi didn't work in the room and was very sporadic in the public areas. I don't expect to have to move around and sit on corridor floors to get a connection. Internet access is a basic of any stay nowadays.
Review 109:Staff were rude when I phoned prior to visit. Noise levels from nightclub under hotel unacceptable and we were on the 2nd floor. 10pm to 3am. (Not until you really dig into reviews you realise there is a nightclub) Room smelt damp and was very old and dated. Bathroom was dirty.
Review 110:They accommodated well for my dietary needs.
Review 111:On Thursday - Saturday nights music will keep you awake until 3am, in any room.
Review 112:Staff was very friendly, responsive to requests. Awesome location, hearty breakfast.
Review 113:Even on the 3rd floor you could here the noise from the Night Club on the ground floor on the Saturday night. Would not have liked to stay on the 1st floor. Some of the staff were not very helpful. Wallpaper peeling of the walls in the bedroom. Hotel needs a facelift.
Review 114:On the sea front. View from the room was excellent. Good parking at the front of the hotel. Decent breakfast. We were there for the GNR and didn't get ripped off for staying on the Saturday night.
Review 115:The hotel is next to a nightclub. The noise from the club was horrendous......our room shook!!!! And didn't stop until 3am. This spoilt our trip. I would avoid this hotel unless you intend having a late one!
Review 116:Friendly staff. Good breakfast.
Review 117:Room 1 small.bed squashed in corner view of wall and heating outlet.room2 smelt of cigarettes..grubby bathroom ..nightclub no sleep from 12 til gone 3am horrendous noise and vibration..elderly receptionist said we should have known it was going to be noisy!
Review 118:Breakfast staff were very friendly and food was okay.
Review 119:the first room I was booked into was not very clean and some of the furniture was falling to bits literally two draw fronts fell off. the second room was not clean(window ledges dead flies and dust. bathroom was substandard i.e. tiles cracked no where to hang towels, bath had seen better days no form of heating in the bathroom. stayed in this room one night before running in the great north run. on arrival back I asked for the manager to complain but they were off duty , the head receptionist who was on duty moved me to a twin room which was at a good standard. this still did not make up for the first night. I work as a manager in the hotel trade and as far as I am concerned both of the first two rooms were not at an acceptable level of cleanliness or repair to be used for guests.
Review 120:location
Review 121:Although on the second floor, the noise from the nightclub on the ground floor (on a Saturday) was intrusive. Goodness knows what it was like for guests on the first floor.
Review 122:Booked a double room for single occupancy. The room was large with a sea view and was well furnished.
Review 123:Nightclub directly under the first floor rooms hence music thudding until early hours. Poor wifi connection in rooms and decor outdated. Had to pay a £10 surety for a tv remote - unbelievable
Review 124:bathroom was a bit dated but still clean and usuable
Review 125:lovely staff, nice and quiet even on a saturday night, safe for a single traveller, amazing views!
Review 126:Thursday, Friday, Saturday Nights, the Nightclub underneath the Rex started at Midnight until 3pm. Nightmare as you may as well have your bed in the nightclub itself if you are going to stay these nights you need earplugs make sure you put them deep into your ears.
Review 127:Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday peaceful quiet nights. Breakfast lovely friendly helpful staff. Beautiful hotel in its prime it would have looked magnificent.
Review 128:No extra blankets supplied.
Review 129:The seaview from the room was amazing! The bed was nice and comfy and the breakfasts were lovely. Set in the large restaurant looking out to the sea. We were well looked after.
Review 130:Room rather dated, and Saturday night, although on top floor could hear the thudding of music from night club in the basement until 3 am Sunday morning
Review 131:Magnificent sea view
Review 132:Everything, freezing cold on an evening and could not close the window as the handle had snapped, breakfast service to early - missed breakfast. Had to have an additional person stay with my group and we were charged £45. Rooms dusty and dirty, poor facilities.
Review 133:Nothing
Review 134:For those who want complete quiet then perhaps this hotel is not suitable as music from the night club can be heard in the rooms. It is subdued but if a light sleeper then it could be disturbing.
Review 135:The room was large with a great view and very comfortable
Review 136:Supposed to be free wifi, but didn't work on 3rd floor. You book a hotel next to the sea I know doesn't guarantee you a sea view, but I didn't really expect a bloody big white brick wall 2 foot from the window as my view + a noisy extractor! Shower didn't work and tiles falling off the wall. Despite asking me twice, still managed get my breakfast wrong! I know it's only just under £50.00/ night, but you can get a lot better for the same price, only a few yards down the road. Do I mention that there's a Night Club on the ground floor which opens at midnight and goes on to 3am? And yes, you can hear the row from the 3rd floor! This on a Thursday and me with work in the morning.
Review 137:Quite frankly - not a lot!
Review 138:Tired and stained/marked decor. Plywood screwed to cover holes in bathroom. Cracks in tiles. Mould and scale in shower. Patchwork of joins in carpet. Misty window units - unable to see out. Dodgy door locks, no chain/secondary locks. WIFI not available in room
Review 139:Been a fab hotel in its time - 70 years ago it would have been buzzing - couldn't recommend it. Staff trying very hard but the hotel need millions spending.
Review 140:It looks a bit run down and could do with a coat of paint. No bar open had to ask reception for drink
Review 141:Excellent breakfast lots to choose from staff very friendly not very far from town. Had nice sea view from room
Review 142:Disco was rather noisy so definitely choose a room as far from it as possible. Wifi only in public areas
Review 143:Bed and table linens were very clean, dining staff in particular were very nice. Good breakfast in lovely room with sea views.
