Reviews for Best Western Tavistock Roker Hotel

Review 1:The faulty fire alarm at 06:45, It stopped after three mins so I called reception who said "it was an old fault and not to worry and I could go back to bed". It went off again around 08:00. Other than that it was a happy stay.

Review 2:Value for money

Review 3:The heating was off when we checked in the room , we advised the staff on checkin then went for a meal next door, when we returned no one had even been to the room we advised a new member of staff who had taken over the previous shift and they said they would get someone to have a look they must have not had a handy man on site has the manager from the bar came to the room with a spanner looked at the heater then said we will need to change rooms, after waiting for some time no one came so again we got in touch with the reception who apologized and said they would sort it out, after 10 minutes a young chap came to the room with a very small heater, when we advised him we were told we were moving rooms he said you can use this in the meantime, After a long wait no one came so again we contacted the reception to be told we should not have been told we were moving rooms and that there were no rooms available, I explained that the room is still cold and its unacceptable, He asked if we could give him a minute while he tried to sort it out, Then the young chap came to the room and said he had another room for us to move in which was strange after being told there were no rooms left, One and a half hours later we eventually got put into another room which is really disappointing considering we were only there for one night.

Review 4:N/A

Review 5:Nice room. Lovely Staff. Ideally situated for my trip. Had a problem with the shower, when I came back in the shower had been replaced. Would definitely recommend it. I always, if I can stay in a Best Western Hotel. No complaints.

Review 6:Did not like the fact that my room was also a fire escape - was not explained to me on check-in. Room was small and did not have any draws to put clothes in. Walls were so thin that when someone in the next room turned the tap on or used the toilet, the noise was so loud that I could not hear the TV. During the night when someone in the next room used the toilet, it was loud enough to wake you up. View from the room was of the fire escape stairs and the back of buildings. We arrived on a particularly bad night with strong winds and heavy rain - the next morning the restaurant was freezing cold and there were several buckets around the floor to catch drips of water coming through the ceiling - same was true in the bar area. Service in the bar area in the evenings was very slow.

Review 7:Great location, bar and restaurant OK, Italian restaurant next door was very good.

Review 8:No one offered to help us with our luggage with what turned out to be a winding maze of a hotel.

Review 9:The restaurants were wonderful. It's locality to walking on the pier and a bus stop right outside were also helpful.

Review 10:The music in the soldiers suite was playing 'til midnight. The room, which was probably the smallest in the building, was very cold, even with the heating on. It could be because I stayed mid December and it's colder up north. The view was at the back of the building so didn't have a very nice view. Could see the petrol station!

Review 11:Right on the doorstep of the beach. Restaurant next door was lovely. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Free parking.

Review 12:The room was like an ice box even though we were told the heating was on when it was clear it was not the bed was so uncomfortable i ended up with a bad back afterwards

Review 13:The room it self was lovely

Review 14:no bad points

Review 15:The man at reception was very polite, helpful & gave us a sea room upgrade free of charge which was great as most hotels would not give this even if the rooms were available. It had a nice bar which was popular & a nice atmosphere

Review 16:The only thing was room 115 was very warm and could do with a fan in the room. The heating wasnt even on.

Review 17:Right from the begining we had a very good stay

Review 18:The bar needs some work 7 the staff some training. Went in after 11. Was ignored by the barman while he chatted to someone. Finally asked what I wanted then said bar was closed. When I said I was resident he then served me. Bar was swimming with liquid & the floor was very sticky !!!

Review 19:Reception staff good. Room nice , although windows drafty

Review 20:The radiator was right next to the bed and on full all night, so hot I rang reception because of this, a member of staff came up, handed me a fan, made no apologies and walked away. Not a very comfortable stay.

Review 21:I found a really cold room. Breakfast too poor as well.

Review 22:Big room, nice night. Nice location in front of the sea but a bit far away from the city centre.

Review 23:Did not have breakfast as it seemed expensive

Review 24:All we needed was a room as we had to help a sister arrange a funeral.so it was booked in a rush , but we are back 4,5,6 of Jan and booked 2 more rooms for family on the 5th of Jan so it must be OK

Review 25:Although it was a " deal" off Internet the room was quite small. It was adequate as we were only spending one night there but would be annoying if staying longer.

Review 26:Good location overlooking beach. Breakfast was served in restaurant overlooking beach.

Review 27:The staff were very helpful and friendly, with nothing too much trouble. We stayed over the Christmas break and although the bar shut early on Christmas Day (understandably so), the staff on duty allowed us to sit in a comfy area of the restaurant and got us some drinks from the bar. This meant we weren't confined to our room and the gesture was very much appreciated. Our room had a great sea view but it was above the main entrance which meant it was a bit noisy from the bar area. This wasn't a problem for us.

Review 28:This was the worst hotel I've ever stopped had no sleep due to the constant noise the entire night. I complained in the morning I was told I should have rang down to reception they would have moved us, I tried to call however the phone didn't work, along with the tv that buzzed on each channel, overall I was not happy with my stay also I paid for a double standard room and I'm sure I got a small double room

Review 29:A little noisy, there were stairs next to our room and we could hear every step when people were using them. The noise from the room upstairs was a little annoying when trying to sleep.

Review 30:Wow what a find....Loved the location, view and styling/decor. Food and drinks excellent. Staff very helpful and friendly.

Review 31:Quite apart from the fact I was upgraded to the Bridal Suite with beautiful views and jacuzzi, the meals were absolutely first class, service with a smile and quick and efficient - made my stay stress free and coupled with an unusually warm December day made this a truly memorable stay. I was meeting up with a large party of friends and they all agreed the Christmas Party will definitely be held there again next year!

Review 32:Towels could have been fluffier

Review 33:Lovely spot. Been coming here for a couple of years & noticed many improvements in that time. New bar, Poetic License, is chic, rooms are comfortable (some are luxurious) & staff are helpful. This time I had an upgrade & my room was the size of a small country with a jacuzzi bath the size of a football pitch.

Review 34:The bar on the ground floor plays very loud music until late. We stayed on a Friday night in a room above the bar/restaurant area and it was horrendous. Would not use this hotel again because of this.

Review 35:The sea view.

Review 36:The breakfast was a bit slow, having to wait for plates and I never did get my iced water.

Review 37:What a fabulous hotel, excellent location, beautiful interior, very welcoming staff. Thank you especially to Kieron who brought us drinks from the bar. What a very pleasant and charming young man. The apples on reception were a lush treat to take.

Review 38:Booked a table at reception in bar for 8.30pm. No table ready for us. Ordered meat sharing platter, which was tough as boots, obviously kept warm all night. We'd just received our order when waitress asked if we wanted pudding as the kitchen was closing!

Review 39:Location and room lovely

Review 40:Had to move rooms as I had been put in a room right above a functionroom which had a very loud party. Moved to the basement which was downmany flights of stairs and they sent me a lady in her 60's to carrymy bag. As you can imagine I did not let her carry my bag and wasshocked the hotel would send her. Room I moved to was very hot and theradiator was broken so could not be turned off. Room service was limitedand cold when it arrived.

Review 41:Location was lovely and the bed was comfortable

Review 42:No hot water from the shower - reported mid afternoon but not repaired in time for the next morning. Mould on the collar of the shower soap dish which was not pleasant. Very noise corridor as placed near the function room despite not being part of the wedding. No fried eggs at breakfast.

Review 43:Nice bar area, decoration downstairs and throughout. Room comfortable and radiator was able to be controlled. Information book available but not in alphabetical order. Plenty of parking but not very well signposted from the rear car park.

Review 44:The bed had springs sticking through which is something we had read on an earlier rating. You would think they would address this, given that so much else was very good

Review 45:Location and friendly staff in both restraunts. The Italian downstairs was very good food and good prices

Review 46:That when we turned up on our wedding day night expecting the executive bridal suite we had to be down graded to a standard double room with a view of a brick wall.. Wasn't the fantastic night I was expecting but they was a leak in the room that we reserved.. To make up for this they have us that night free and free breakfast and when we went to the bridal executive suite the next day we had a comimentry bottle of prosecco on ice in the room too

Review 47:The executive suite was amazing with the bouble Jacuzzi bath and sea view and room service and the full englsh breakfast fantastic stay when we finally got our room after the leak the night before.

Review 48:Nothing to report!

Review 49:The welcome, the staff, the bar staff and bar. Giles was wonderful. I asked him a lot of questions about the distillery and he answered everything. The breakfast was lovely. The rooms were wonderful. Great nights sleep.

Review 50:The fact I couldn't cancel due to a family loss, even with 4 days notice didn't impress me. Can't really comment on staff, food, room, etc, as I never used the hotel

Review 51:Lovely hotel, a real 'place for everyone' feel. Very polite and friendly staff, lovely room with a huge bed, fab bathroom and really powerful hot shower. Will definitely visit again.

Review 52:Noisy room from water and heating pipes, too warm event hough the radiators were off, pipes going under the floor made it into a greenhouse! Not good!

Review 53:Location and variety

Review 54:Double room very small. Noisy extractor fan on outside wall of room (116)

Review 55:Staff very pleasant and helpful. Bar and coffee shop top class. Room spotless and great bathroom.

Review 56:Initial contact with staff member who looked miserable and didn't really want to be bothered with us ... we saw her around 12 hours later and understood why as she was still on duty! We booked through Booking.com and asked hotel if we could check in early as attending rugby international in Newcastle - we were informed it could well be possible but when we arrived we were not able to check in. Not a huge problem for us, but misinformation could have been more problematic for other guests.

Review 57:Seafront location - ideal to blow cobwebs away. Bar attached - for easy food and drink.

Review 58:Double beds are definetely not double. Very difficult for two people to sleep in the small double rooms. One of the manager was not helpfull at all.

Review 59:Awesome pub in Hotel and a great buffet breakfast.

Review 60:Cooked breakfast is essentially out of a tin or freezer which is a shame - no local fresh produce; décor/ambience is a bit American commercial - lacks local flavour

Review 61:Safe and secure parking for our bikes - its situated at the end of the C2C; right on the front so a great location; good size modern room; good eating options; reception a bit officious - just too eager to get paid as soon as you arrive.

Review 62:Rooms 113 / 114 are right above the busy pub and function suite. A band was playing until 11:30 not unreasonable you would think but as we sat in the bedroom the music was so loud that our drinks were vibrating the noise was unbelievable! We did go to reception and complained (twice) as we were with 2 children aged 10 / 13 and they obviously couldn't go to sleep. The duty manager did come up to the room looked embarrassed and stated that the band he would get the band to finish ASAP. He also did offered us compensation. So do not stay in these rooms unless you intend to party - definitely not for those with children.

Review 63:The restaurant was great and staff really friendly and accommodating. We stayed on a busy Sat night after the Rugby and the head waiter was fabulous. He found us a table (we could even watch the rugby)and the food was good value and tasty.

Review 64:The buffet breakfast ran out of a lot of items before we got there

Review 65:Very nice location on the beach, all new facilities. Nice coffee shop and pub on site

Review 66:Nothing

Review 67:Lovely hotel My son is at University and when we visit we always stay here good value for money staff can't do enough for you, would not stay any where else in Sunderland

Review 68:We were given room 104 on check in, we were expecting a lot better for the cost involved. The room was very hot even with the window open. There were very hot pipes below the floor boards, which could be felt, so the room temperature could not be controlled, it was very uncomfortable. The carpets were not in very good condition and were heavily rippled because of distorted floor boards, which you could see through the carpet. The floor creaked terribly all over when walking around the room. The bedroom window overlooked a flat roof area and for most of the time a loud extraction fan could be heard with occasional kitchen smells coming into the room. The TV reception was very hit and miss, poor reception and loss of satelitte signal for 90% of the time. This room hardly came up to two star rating and was very poor value. We did not enjoy our stay at all and were glad to get away.

Review 69:Breakfast

Review 70:decorating work made the communal areas messy and corridor difficult to access. lack of insulation meant I could hear every movement in the room above me.

Review 71:friendliness of the staff - and the sea view from the dining room!

Review 72:Liked everything.

Review 73:Allocated a family room which was a bonus for a solo traveller Facilities excellent, could not fault. Breakfast excellent also.

Review 74:Booking.com only offered a small double room which we booked, but on arrival the reception staff offered an up-grade to a large room with a sea view for no extra charge.

Review 75:1. Heated towel rail wasn't, and didn't 2. Safety button on shower was missing - possibility of scalding 3. No English mustard for the English breakfast 4. No pastries left half-way through breakfast 5. Toasters didn't work properly - burnt toast only! 6. Ordered poached eggs - got fried. 7. Room very hot with no apparent means to cool it down other than to leave the windows wide open all night. 8. Very long distance from reception to room - several staircases and no lift. 9. When I went to pay, the computer had failed - details taken from me with a promise that no funds would be taken from my credit card until I had been emailed a bill. In fact, funds were removed from my card without authorisation and I then had to complain loudly to receive a bill at all.

Review 76:Convenient. Willing staff labouring under the new refurbishment of the hotelk

Review 77:The weekend breakfast was poor at best, plates not heated, all the cooked food cold, tea cold and no milk on table.not enough staff to care for full house

Review 78:It was clean, but work being carried out. Too much effort going into serving wedding party on both days.

Review 79:We came to stay at your hotel for a wedding which was at 3pm but as we could not check into our room until 3pm we had to get ready for the wedding in the public toilets which was very inconvenient.

Review 80:The cleanliness of the rooms and the hotel overall. The meals in the restaurant were very good but the breakfast was very disappointing.

Review 81:Very noisy- two weddings on at the same time. Family room above the bar area!!??? Breakfast served in pizzeria one morning- food cold. Smell of vomit in reception area during the weddings, fighting amongst wedding guests, one wedding with live band and another with disco at the same time. Complained to reception and had "an apology"

Review 82:Excellent location

Review 83:Couldn't book a 1 night stay through there own website as they have a min of 2 nights so had to book through booking.com paid £68 for 1 night in a average double room without breakfast. Didn't have much of a view as we were at the back of the building, bar was busy when we checked in around 00.15 but once in the room we couldn't hear anything, we were asked if we wanted to pay for breakfast but we refused to pay £9.95 each for breakfast.

Review 84:Room was clean and tidy couldn't here any noise from downstairs which was good staff were polite.

Review 85:Chose a small double room...a bit cramped, poor alignment of doors, bathroom almost as big as the bedroom!! Short on towels...but extras soon provided. No instructions to work TV which proved a challenge!

Review 86:Position, friendly staff, free car parking, warm hotel, good dining, well priced options, tasty breakfast with a wide choice.

Review 87:The Wifi never worked in the room. The bar was very noisy and uncomfortable. We could not sleep on Saturday due to the disco below!!

Review 88:The room was lovely but we paid a much higher price than the advertised daily price. The meals in the bar were good.

Review 89:The only issue was our room was a bit of a trek to get to. Room 137

Review 90:Loved hotel, loved location and loved Italian restaurant. It was our 1st time visiting Sunderland will be returning and definitely will stay at this hotel again

Review 91:Room was very hot with no way of cooling it down and the radiator was off

Review 92:Great location with a view of the sea. Smart hotel that worked well even with some renovations going on. Very good bar and dining. Comfortable room

Review 93:Nowhere to sit in the hotel except the bar. Residents and external guests not differentiated enough. Very busy in the bar too.

Review 94:Great location. Good value for money.

Review 95:Room layout too cramped and even with lights on too dark to read. Also very poor TV with constant him to sound. Breakfast chef could not do tomatoes on toast ended up half a tomatoe on dry toast. V poor.

Review 96:Friendly staff

Review 97:001. no vegetarian option for breakfast 002. the non meat products and meat products were not kept apart 003. for a non meat eater a bit nauseating to have utensils for meat products also being used in veg dishes 004. had a buffet breakfast on the second day where they served scrambled eggs. had to request fried egg which they did promptly but it was not offered voluntarily 005. breakfast time 7 am to 9 am not at all suitable should be at least until 10 am ideally not at all happy with breakfast considering I paid £10.00 per person per breakfast bedroom mattress was not comfortable room was hot - no fans in room

Review 98:reception staff very helpful request were fulfilled promptly accommodated all our needs cleaning staff were very good

Review 99:Found our twin room very warm and because of this at night found it difficult to sleep.

Review 100:A slightly late check time at no further cost. Staff were very friendly. The rooms were of a good standard.

Review 101:We were initially put in the wrong room which was directly over the bar. The very noisy bar and we were kept awake most of the first night. However, the staff bent over backwards to rectify this for the second night. Breakfast is very expensive for what you get

Review 102:Hotel is in a lovely location and everything is of a good quality.

Review 103:We had to keep the windows open as it was a particularly warm night and, unavoidably, the noise form the wedding party in the bar below disturbed our sleep somewhat.

Review 104:The location on the seafront was lovely and the food at the Italian restaurant was excellent. It was a convenient 20 minute walk to the Stadium of Light.

Review 105:Very loud music form bar just under the room, unable to sleep, until after midnight on Friday and one o'clock the next night.

Review 106:Beautiful sea view. Excellent very large comfy bed.

Review 107:there were only 4 guests in the dining room at this moment in time for breakfast but I had to wait nearly 20 minutes for a poached egg, my husband had eaten his breakfast before I received mine. This is the second time this has happened during stays at this hotel, does it take 20 minutes to poach and egg!! I will have to have an eggless breakfast on my next stay as I prefer to eat breakfast with my husband not after.

Review 108:The room was lovely

Review 109:Breakfast poor.requested higher room but allocated room 111 which you had to climb upstairs then downstairs also window looked out to commercial bins.We are senior citizens and we found this very difficult with cases.

Review 110:Staff friendly.location good.

Review 111:Better disabled access needed. I picked this venue for my daughters wedding day not realising her sister would have trouble getting to her venue. So embarrassing asking people for help

Review 112:Staff very helpful. Could not fault them I am a best western card holder I have stayed at other hotels this was the best apart from disabled access and I heard many people comment. On this subject

Review 113:The cleanliness in the bar/restuarant poor.had to ask for tables to be wiped and cleaned. crockery dirty and replacement crockery worse. food debris left on tables which had been cleared .

Review 114:Location

Review 115:When someone was walking on corridor outside of the room, squeak noise came into my room, and also drunk guests talked at the corridor until late midnight. It made me wake up and really really annoying to me. Very disappointed stay.

Review 116:Sunrise view of North sea, because I could not sleep well.

Review 117:Unable to get into room until 3.10pm despite my disabled wife suffering from pain and needing to lay down. Refused several times. Our room overlooked the restaurant roof with air conditioners. Not a pretty sight. Had to wait twenty minutes to be approached by a waiter in restaurant. He said sorry every time he came to the table but that is not satisfactory. Noisy wedding party.

Review 118:Nice hotel which is close to sea. Some members of staff were excellent. Others not so.

Review 119:Location of room - next to cleaners quarters - very very noisy and could hear loud snoring all night. I'm not a tall person but my feet hung out the bottom of the bed and pillows hard.. Very bad sleep, numerous bulbs out in room and very dusty

Review 120:Friendly staff on arrival.. But not helpful with complaints

Review 121:Disappointing choice and quality of breakfast. The room was rather dark with only a view of another wall

Review 122:Location on the sea front, great for my sailing event at Sunderland yacht club. Unusually fast WiFi for a hotel.

Review 123:nothing

Review 124:extremely pleasant and helpful staff. The position and facilities of the hotel were everything we needed. We had a meal in the adjoining Italian Restaurant which was delicious, the staff there also were very pleasant and obliging. Would definitely stay there again.

Review 125:Nice hotel. We found the room small but comfortable enough for a one night stay. The bar was busy and lively and the pizza restaurant was very nice and well priced. We would recommend.

Review 126:Tea in the morning comes from a flask so is always a bit stewed, however if you ask they will provide you with a pot.

Review 127:The staff are amazing, very friendly and extremely helpful. Particularly Rosie on reception who managed to get me something to eat when all the kitchens had shut down. Location is perfect, and if you get a front room then the view of the sea is fantastic.

Review 128:The lift was broken and it was quite a long walk to the room

Review 129:Great view over the beach A selection of eating & drinking facilities. Enjoyed what the hotel did for the air show

Review 130:Size of rooms We asked to be moved due to unpleasant smell in bathroom . Had to stay there for first night and found that the toilet was leaking ! Thus the smell. Moved to what we described as a bunker

Review 131:The cleaning products (on carpet??), the slow service at restaurants, poor quality hot breakfasts, noise in room 141 from people above (terrible!!), poor lighting in room, distance of room from reception (3 flights of stairs for a 68 year old is not ideal)

Review 132:The modern decor in the restaurants and reception, the location, the staff

Review 133:Room was far too small for a couple. Too noisy and the hot water pipe for the hotel ran through the room making it unbearably hot. The only breakfast option was too expensive although the food was tasty.

Review 134:Location was ideal and the bar was lively and interesting.

Review 135:Some noise from the bar area encroached into the room but did not particularly impact.

Review 136:Good size room, great location, excellent choice of real ales and good food.

Review 137:Poor signposting. Room to hot (without any heating on). Our room faced the A/C units so constant humming, floors creaked, pressure problem with shower caused it to make loud noise. Not a comfortable night. Room needs redecorating.

Review 138:Italian restaurant ok.

Review 139:WiFi didn't work, room wasn't cleaned on the first day. Too far from city centre.

Review 140:Great lively bar and the restaurants attached were good. Good sea front location.
