Reviews for The Glasgow City Hotel

Review 1:Although I was told that refurbishment in the hotel would affect the receptionarea only it did affect my room as well and it was horrible and unbearable

Review 2:Refurbished room ok

Review 3:15 minute wait to check in for no apparent reason. Four members of staff at reception desk but only one dealing with waiting guests.

Review 4:Enjoyed the leisure facilities. Good variety at breakfast.

Review 5:The reception was sometimes a little slow but the staff were pleasant. The hotel interior is a little worn but tidy.

Review 6:Great location for going out in bars and restaurants. The room was very comfortable and we enjoyed the swimming pool.

Review 7:The hotel decor is getting a little tired but they are undergoing renovation so I'm sure it will look great when complete.

Review 8:Lovely hotel, great location and the staff were very helpful. The breakfast was excellent. Would definitely staff again and would have n hesitation in recommending to others.

Review 9:The staff were very miserable and did not look like they were happy. Reception staff very rarely lifted their heads when we entered/vacated the hotel. The waiting staff with the exception of one or to male members looked thoroughly miserable, not at all welcoming

Review 10:Having visited this hotel on an annual basis for the last 6 years I am familiar with its location/surroundings which is the main reason I have returned year after year, the breakfast is also first class with plenty to choose from.

Review 11:we were in room 432 and the beds were really big and comfortable and a lovely big room excellent stay. Breakfast was great and such a great selection .

Review 12:We noticed there was a sign placed in our ensuite instructing us to ensure the door was closed at all times as steam sets the smoke alarms off, but unfortunately the extractor fan in the ensuite was terrible, meaning that the ensuite remained steamy for hours after having showered; air conditioning seems to have caused some irritation to our skin; iron was leaking which caused it to soak our clothing; no fridge in room.

Review 13:Professional and friendly staff; food was of a good quality (we had breakfast only); great location - very central; safe included in room.

Review 14:The toilets in the dressing rooms were not the cleanest. The WIFI took a while to connect to. The room was very cold when we arrived, and it took a long while to heat it up. It would be better if the rooms were heated at a normal temperature before guests arrive as there was a slight draft from the large windows. When we controlled the temperature, it was nice and warm though. Not enough hangers in the wardrobe. The view at room 740 was awful so we never looked out. There are spiral steps you have to climb in order to use the sauna and steam room ( maybe not great for older people or people with trouble climbing stairs ) The bathroom in our room was lovely apart from the ventilation! The ventilation was very poor, therefore the steam never really ceased and condensation was always on the mirror (we could never use the bathroom mirror) there was only a small vent which did not suffice for the strong shower and there was a sign beside it saying to keep door closed or else the fire alarm could be set off by steam! Why is there not better ventilation then? The breakfast was expensive so we did not opt for it. £10 each if you paid at reception or £14.99 if you paid on arrival to breakfast. Apart from that, everything was great.

Review 15:The swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room were all fabulous. We loved them. The pool is not constantly supervised too, which we liked as it made it more relaxing, however, those with smaller children might not like that. There is a tiny little pool for young children too. The pool was all one depth of 1.35m which was nice. The room was lovely, you could control the temperature, there was a HD flat screen TV, massive king size bed which was very comfortable! We got complimentary shortbreads biscuits. Lots of wardrobe and cupboard space. There was a safe which was free to use. The shower was AMAZING! Chairs and little coffee table were comfy and lovely to sit at. We arrived early at about 8am when check in was at 3pm, but the lovely staff at reception allowed us to check in to our room immediately! We were very happy with this. Friendly and helpful staff at swimming pool reception. Lovely, warm towels given to us when using the pool facilities and guests do not have to wear those horrible swimming caps! Also very stylish in the lobby area with colourful sofas and lovely diamond lights. Apparently they will be doing renovations soon, so hopefully it will be even better when we come back!

Review 16:Enjoyed it all.

Review 17:Great hotel in the middle of the city centre, a few minutes away from Sauchiehall Street. Really good value for money. Lovely swimming pool and wide range of breakfast for the morning.

Review 18:We love the central location of this hotel and the fact that it has leisure facilities. Very pleasant and helpful staff. We were pleased to learn that the hotel is to be refurbished over the next few months.

Review 19:Nothing I would go back and recommend this hotel to anyone lovely place clean tidy and great happy staff. 10/10

Review 20:The staff were very friendly and welcoming and funny, that was the nice part when we walked in first impressions are always a good a true fact of what kind of place you have booked and this was a good sign.

Review 21:Nothing to report however your website is out of date as there is not a solarium and the website says there is.

Review 22:I loved the location of the hotel very central as well as making good use of all the facilities

Review 23:Location is great. Staff are really helpful. There is nothing negative I can say about this hotel. It was our third time to stay here and we have booked to stay again in March. Definitely 10 out of 10.

Review 24:We were only staying one night therefore don't expect room service to arrive until we checked out, however the chambermaid knocked the door and opened it.. I will say she didn't enter the room but if she has a list of rooms being vacated then surely they wouldn't enter until after 11am.

Review 25:The night shift Porter was so friendly and so informative. He's definitely an asset to the hotel. Unfortunately I cannot remember his name. I would like the management to be made aware of this if possible.

Review 26:room keycard did not work properly and failed many times (which was not caused by the contact with a mobile phone), but that's all

Review 27:good value for money, especially in the Christmas holiday season - great location for shopping

Review 28:Key fobs were not activated at check in which was an inconvenience having to travel back down from 5th floor to have this done. Also not in walking distance of Hydro which was reason we booked

Review 29:The heating system had broken down and we had to be given heaters and duvets Ilate at night as room was freezing but to be fair the night staff were very kind and helpful and made the best of a bad situation. I have now been advised that the hotel will be refurbished soon. i would not like anyone else to experience this as my friend felt miserable with the cold and it ruined what should have been a lovely Christmas shopping trip to Glaagow from Warwickshire. i could not believe it - I could see my breath in the room but it was out of anyone's control. In the grand scale of things going on in the world it is trivial. Let us hope things are much improved with the refurbishment.

Review 30:Location was good

Review 31:We forgot two items and contacted the management who said they had them and will send them on, that was in early Dec 15 and we still haven't received the items.

Review 32:the stair leading to the sauna.also floor would be better with a mat as it was very slippery.

Review 33:great room and facilities staff friendly and helpful from the concierge upwards.

Review 34:The swimming pool is very cold, and the spa was out of order. This was the same when we visited in March 2105.The whole leisure area needs refreshed, the changing rooms were not that clean. I did read on a notice that the leisure facilities were run by a separate company so it may not be the fault of the Hotel, but at the end of the day its still in there buildings

Review 35:Great location, 1 min walk to shops, restaurants etc. Very pleasant staff. Good size room

Review 36:Reception staff gave no information about the facilities available including leisure suite, restaurant, bar etc.

Review 37:Very close to city centre and public transport. Nice hotel.

Review 38:Loved the big bed and the space we had in the room, lovely clean hotel no waiting for lifts there always seemed to be one when you went for one ,room service is fantastic X

Review 39:Hotel is very tired and badly needs the refurbishment that is about to commence. Terrible cheap pillows. Horrible views.

Review 40:Great location, minutes from central shopping area.

Review 41:only thing i could say was the jacuzi was not working during our stay which was a shame. as we were there for a spa break

Review 42:the staff we very friendly and helpful especially in the lesure centre they made us feel very welcome and could not do enough for us.

Review 43:Staff when leaving too check out not friendly or could speak English very well ! Not Scottish ! Jacuzzi not working as paid for this in price package FRONT HOUSE STAFF WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING

Review 44:Breakfast was great staff in the leisure dept where lovely and friendly also Scottish and could speak with clear English !

Review 45:Great shower ruined by poor quality shower curtain and vigorous old air vent - vent needs updating and and shower curtain weighted.

Review 46:Great location near city centre with parking at reasonable rates. Excellent Scottish breakfast. Staff overall very helpful.

Review 47:We specifically booked this hotel to use the hot tub and then the hot tub was out of use! Such a disappointment. Everything else was good though. But there wasn't a fridge in the room which was a little frustrating.

Review 48:The room was very good- very clean and the bed was comfortable.

Review 49:My only down side was the shower, it was fine in the sense of heat and power but the position of the shower head was too low, im 6ft and had to duck down to get my head under it.

Review 50:Rooms were lovely, beds were comfy, central location

Review 51:Neither the safe nor the tv worked. The latter was fixed by changing a cable but the former we had to give up on. I was cold on the first night and slept badly. The 2nd day,Jan 30th I asked for an extra blanket to be left in my room. Returning that night there was no blanket. I rang three times and even went down to reception myself to ask again. I was told that everyone was busy with a function and I would have to wait. I lay awake for an hour but no blanket arrived. I had tried to adjust the air con but it seemed to be either too warm or, at 21 degrees, blowing cold air. The following morning two blankets arrived but by then I had had two poor nights' sleep. Staff were very apologetic.

Review 52:The staff were without exception helpful and friendly. The food was fresh and delicious. The leisure suite and pool were excellent.

Review 53:Only down side was that the jacuzzi was out of action but that was due to time of year and parts required.

Review 54:Excellent location right in the centre of town. The staff were extremely friendly and the hotel itself was very clean, the beds were dreamy ! Very comfy and also the breakfast was the best I've had in a long time.

Review 55:They haven't change the bed linens for 6 days. They didn't do proper clean of the bathroom and the room.. the food in the restaurant was horrible and expensive..the staff was a bit uunfriendly.. and they gave us a room with a view of a wall..

Review 56:The location is a walking distance to City Center..

Review 57:The swimming pool was disappointing. Didn't look clean, with patches of sand lying on bottom from loose tiles maybe. The jacuzzi part was out of order. Quite deep, not child friendly.

Review 58:Rooms were great. Very clean. The hotel as a whole was lovely with friendly staff.

Review 59:Replacement tiles and grouting work over the bath were very out of keeping with quality of the room and hotel overall. You could hear a low pitched hum in the room (740) at night, fortunately not quite loud enough to seriously disturb. Some gym equipment was very out of date. The upright chest press in particular was unusable and dangerous as on each return stroke it went light then randomly jerked free with un-damped full weight, potentially damaging elbows and chest.

Review 60:Central location. Quiet at night. Convenient lift direct from the car park. Well lit and nicely carpeted halls between lift and bedrooms. Excellent reception staff, great breakfast - wide choices & fresh. Main entrance very smart, bar modern. Good food and prompt polite room service, unobtrusive room attendance.

Review 61:Stayed on 7th floor and moved rooms 3 times in a 5 night stay due to noise caused by plumbing/air con.

Review 62:Great location, decent hotel and facilities and staff. Let down by noise causing sleepless nights.

Review 63:Just small problem with bathroom but very professionally handled so no complaints

Review 64:Staff excellent had a slight problem with bathroom and we were immediately up graded excellent service

Review 65:Room very spacious, very clean and a great layout. Breakfast was great with lots of variety. Leisure facilities good but jacuzzi out of order at our time of stay. All in all we had a great stay in a great hotel, will definitely return with my family

Review 66:Only stayed for one night but great location, made use of swimming pool and sauna. Lovely room. Staff very helpful and smart. Breakfast excellent. Lots of choice

Review 67:Should source a better pastry supplier for the continental breakfast. Croissants etc were poor quality.

Review 68:Great location, friendly staff. Good budget accommodation.

Review 69:Good atmosphere. Friendly staff and good customer service. Great facilities and lovely hotel room. Had a great couple of days. Defo worth the money! Will return again for sure.

Review 70:Parking charge. Didn't use the car at all on a three night stay, used public transport and would have thought behaviour of this sort would have been rewarded with subsidised parking, especially in a city! £21 paid at the end of our stay.

Review 71:Location of this hotel is superb for shops bar's and restaurants.

Review 72:Location, and the security, the card had to be used to exit the stair wells, which meant no un authorised person can easily accesss the room corridors which is excellent. Staff were FAB : )

Review 73:The location is good rooms are not to bad in need of attention

Review 74:Stayed there before I was good this time it was all so good the hotel needs a good sorting out no hot water in the showers at the pool Jacuzzi not working pretty dirty in men's changing room.

Review 75:Staff didn't advise of fire alarm test and thought hadn't paid when had. Pool area run down, jacuzzi not working.

Review 76:About 20 min walk from central station. Large room comfy bed. Nice bar area

Review 77:No companies.

Review 78:Good location near city centre. Access to transport excellent, Staff were very helpful. Rooms cleaned everyday if you wish. Stayed 4 nights, family joined me for breakfast no problems.

Review 79:I was in my bed with a late checkout and The maid entered my room twice will never use hotel again should be give some compensation spoiled my Christmas room not good either

Review 80:Nothing

Review 81:The pillows were so hard and uncomfortable I did not sleep. There was only one chair in the room although we did have a small sofa two chairs would have been appropriate for a family of four

Review 82:The room was large and had a fridge with all the essential equipment iron hair dryer kettle. Close to shopping and pubs and restaurants. The breakfast was hot and well stocked

Review 83:dissapointed jacuzzi was not working and there was no lock for lockers had to leave locker open

Review 84:the upgrade of the hotel was impressive being able to walk to areas of glasgow that we wanted to see

Review 85:The hotel lobby/reception area was freezing cold - unpleasant walking through it or waiting for lifts in party clothes

Review 86:Stayed over night to attend function in the hotel. Comfortable hotel room and good buffet breakfast.

Review 87:the pool was in very bad condition and the bathroom was a bit shabby and a little dirty.

Review 88:The room was nice and quite well decorated. The breakfast was great and there were plenty of vegan options

Review 89:tired rooms, poor standard of bed, very noisy and unaware of party nights which multiplied the number of drunk and hungover guests.

Review 90:good location with on site parking(paid for)

Review 91:In the restaurant at night.was given the wrong meal.the waiter decided not to put extra vegetables to the kitchen because I got veg with my meal.I wanted the extra veg.received the incorrect bill.it was one disaster after. Another.

Review 92:The room and the bed.

Review 93:Bathroom was in poor condition and pool area was a bit run down .

Review 94:Good location and nice reception bar area. Bed room was not too bad , poor value for money .

Review 95:Under new ownership - Leisure facilities were unclean and somewhat in need of TLC, lots of lights out , shower heads faulty etc. Breakfast was not as good as usual ( have stayed previous 6 Christmas times ) had to return cooked items as still frozen and had to wait ages for coffee as kitchen had run out of pots. Even the toilet paper was of inferior quality as when trading as Thistle Hotels.

Review 96:Location superb , staff friendly , 7th floor rooms excellent as usual.

Review 97:Party nights, with police being called, loud shouting, banging throughout the night, cans of lager on landing throughout our stay, door hanging off cupboard in room, staff not very helpful when informed about our stay, went to get duty manager who never appeared, bath robes actually mean towels, definitely won't be back, I understand Xmas is going to be more busy and loud but staff should have been ensuring that the building was reasonably quiet during the night especially when children were in the building. I wouldn't have gone if I knew this hotel held party nights

Review 98:Breakfast room dismal and immediately and though not on our tariff was regaled with how much it would cost although we had not made up our minds which one to choose.then seated on an awkward table so asked to be changed .left as quickly as we could .however food looked fine.

Review 99:Centrally situated with car parking a bonus even if you had to pay for it Room comfortable shower excellent

Review 100:Location was great with the subway just 2 mins walk. Free parking was superb in the hotel itself. The room was good with a lovely bathroom. We found the staff approachable and the breakfast was excellent. We often go to Glasgow on one night trips with the family. We felt for value for money this was the best hotel we have been in. We will be using this hotel for our trips from now on and would recommend .

Review 101:WiFi in the hotel was very poor and purely because of this I would probably not stay again. House keeping staff trying to access at 0845 on a Saturday was also ridiculous

Review 102:Seemed a bit run down and run with cost cutting in mind. Eg one tiny bottle of body lotion to wash with for basin and shower. Corridors were cold. No central heating just an individual room heater. The Jaccuzi was out of action (and there was a notice saying not to sit in it unless it was bubbling. Seemed strange). Good for a business trip but not for a romantic weekend break.

Review 103:The gym and pool and central location. Steam room and sauna were great. Facilities were comprehensive. Free WiFi. Staff were helpful.

Review 104:The room needed updated. No ventilation, neither electronic or natural. First fllor room faced onto the hotels extremely noisey air conditioning equipment therefore it was difficult to sleep. Told at checkout that there were quite rooms on same floor! Also only one lift in operation all weekend.

Review 105:Friendly, helpful staff.Excellent location.

Review 106:The bar staff at night were a bit stressed,we were paying good money to stay and there customer service wasn't good.

Review 107:Location and the hotel room was big.

Review 108:No bad experience but prefer to have a room up on the 5th floor if possible to minimise street noise.

Review 109:Stayed previously and not been disappointed on any occasion.

Review 110:was on second floor with a bunch of party goers next door noise was terrible they partied all night ,banging doors ,shouting was not the only one to complain as people on first and fifth floor did also, tried phoning reception at half past one but nobody answered was there for a special birthday which was ruined

Review 111:Christmas Party guests fighting in the hotel bar at 4pm, running through the corridors all night, banging on doors, arguing, swearing... Totally unsuitable for families during December when it basically turns into an annexe for Christmas Parties.

Review 112:The staff were very helpful and seemed equally as frustrated at the atmosphere and enjoyment of most being spoiled by a small number of obnoxious Christmas Party people.

Review 113:One of the breakfast waiters hardly spoke english and all we wanted was 2 teas and 2 decaf. coffees

Review 114:Rooms are a generous size and when we came back to the hotel around midnight there was no problem in getting a cup of tea for my wife and friend.

Review 115:Jacuzzi wasn't working which I was told was there.Staff in the restaurant weren't attentive. We weren't asked if we wanted a drink before ordering and not given a steak knife.I had to wave to get staff attention to order as I was fed up waiting.

Review 116:Lovely place which is excellent location to town.

Review 117:The double bed was pretty small but that's not that bad. Only thing I found irritating was the lighting in the room as had to turn on five different lamps and the main room light for any decent lighting (especially doing make up) but I guess you could do this in the bathroom I just prefer not to.

Review 118:Usually stay at budget hotels this was lovely, great sized rooms, tidy and clean.Great location five minute walk to Buchanan galleries and two minutes from sauciehall street. Parking underneath the hotel so no dragging bags around when you arrive.

Review 119:My friend lhas a horrific experience with the hotel security staff , she had lost her card , the did not believe she was a guest there and was left out side in the freezing cold for over 3 hours .

Review 120:My hotel was lovely , staff appeared warm and friendly on arrival .

Review 121:We were allocated a room with no working heating;we then had to locate to a different room which after a long day shopping was a bit of a inconvenience

Review 122:Hotel is in the middle of glasgow so ideally located

Review 123:Only wish I could have stayed a little longer...

Review 124:Very comfortable room, extremely helpful staff and excellent facilities... also close to shopping and restaurant premises...

Review 125:Beds are not comfortable. Staff don't provide info about hotel, facilities, services until they are asked for.

Review 126:Location Swimming pool, sauna. Old furniture

Review 127:Other guests being inconsiderate and noisy between 3 and 5 am. I thought the price was a little to high especially as breakfast wasn't included.

Review 128:The staff were very helpful, they didn't have a copy of our booking but were able to accommodate us. When other guests were being loud at 3 am they came to talk to them.

Review 129:The amount of time it takes to check in & lack of choice on the food menu for such a big hotel. Very limited

Review 130:The hotel was clean and the staff very friendly.

Review 131:I prefer to be able to open my window at night - not being able to, I did not have a particularly good sleep.

Review 132:I particularly liked the hotel's proximity to the Conservatoire and the shopping areas. I also enjoyed its comfort and the kindness of the staff.

Review 133:Hotel pool area very tired looking. Treatment area lovely though

Review 134:Staff so pleasant and very helpful. Could not ask for better Had massage and reflexology. Girls fab there too.

Review 135:A maintenance man let himself into my room to fix a light whilst I was in the bathroom (so beware as reception don't phone you first so if you don't hear the knock due to the shower.....) Had no hot water working until 7pm and the shower was also not working correctly. Not a great experience. Would not stay again.
