Reviews for The Cromwell Arms
Review 1:Shower head didn't fit so kept falling off and as the room was over the bar it was noisy until closing time
Review 2:Staff were great. Room was clean and comfortable
Review 3:Menu was a bit limited but that was because the special menu wasn't being produced during Christmas New Year period.
Review 4:Easy parking, great location giving easy access to lovely walks.
Review 5:The mattress had indentations making it most uncomfortable.
Review 6:The location was perfect for our requirements. The staff were great, friendly & attentive. Great room!
Review 7:The Cromwell Arms is outstanding and the attention to detail is superb. It is such a great, professional, clean, comfortable, polite and welcoming venue. Would never stay anywhere else when visiting this area
Review 8:We stayed 2 nights in the family room and it was perfect. Really large room with 2 bunk beds. The staff were super friendly and the breakfast was excellent. Would stay again.
Review 9:Room and bathroom a bit shabby and dated. Though all was very clean.
Review 10:Staff very friendly and helpful. Pub was nice and enjoyed watching rugby matches while having a pint. The breakfast provided was good.
Review 11:The whole place was really hot, we had a room on the second floor (attic) and had to leave the velux open all the time (oct/nov no radiators on)
Review 12:Friendly staff, lovely big room
Review 13:Extractor fan and loud conversations in smoking area prevented sleep on one night. Loud thumping music, starting at 10pm, plus the above, prevented it on second night.
Review 14:Central location.
Review 15:Very pleasant staff, comfy bed, clean room. Food portions were large and quality was great (the gammon was delicious). Locals were fun too. We couldn't ask for more.
Review 16:Bed was poor and had little or no support. I am in the mattress industry and know what is required, poor nights sleep due to poor comfort.
Review 17:Great people and great food, nothing is too much trouble at all. Staff are superb.
Review 18:Breakfast could have gone on longer but not exactly a problem.
Review 19:Surprised, I knew the area was beautiful but to find such a treat of a pub/inn/hotel was fantastic. There was live music which is always nice and plenty of space inside and out.
Review 20:Wifi was very disappointing, none in my room.
Review 21:Easy to park, great welcome. Shown to a compact but clean and comfortable single room which for me being small was fine. Good evening meal with friendly efficient staff and a fantastic breakfast in the morning.
Review 22:I was charged £50 for losing the room key which I believe was over excessive. My value for money rating would have been higher if not for this.
Review 23:Location was perfect for Dartmoor cycling and breakfasts kept me going all day. Very smart and clean room.
Review 24:My wife had to buy her own gluten free bread for toast(breakfast) as when we asked the waiter for some the first morning(stayed a week) he replied that the hotel did not provide it.
Review 25:Very handy for Dartmoor, varied evening menu choice and comfortable room.
Review 26:Would have liked a shower cap and a bigger bath towel
Review 27:Spacious room, very comfy beds and pillows, great location, good sized car park, friendly atmosphere throughout the whole place
Review 28:The sign said the stalls for the Saturday farmer market directly outside would be set up from 6.30am. In the event, the clattering started at 5.30am...
Review 29:Friendly staff, comfortable rooms and parking - all in a lively pub with a restaurant in the middle of Bovey Tracey, a characterful little town.
Review 30:Cue for the toaster
Review 31:Very friendly and even though booking.com didn't inform hotel about our dog they were more than accommodating definitely stay there again
Review 32:Car park was very busy and a parking space couldn't be guaranteed, though this was peak season.
Review 33:Friendly pub with a very nice atmosphere. Enjoyed the Sunday evening music quiz. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice.
Review 34:Early morning call from the local cockerel!
Review 35:staff were excellent and very friendly, good food served in a very good time even though they were busy. Cooked well and the burger was excellent. will stay again here.
Review 36:Evening meals require improvement
Review 37:The service of staff was excellent Breakfast was lovely lots to choose from The family room was a good size with nice size bathroom with a lovely view of the moors
Review 38:We had booked an upstairs room, but hadnt expected the two flights of very steep narrow stairs we had to climb up with our suitcase. So ask for a downstairs room if not very agile. We and other guests felt that breakfast finishing, on the dot, at 9am was very early when on holiday
Review 39:We enjoyed the atmosphere in the pub, the staff were friendly and the food good, the breakfast was excellent, worth having to get up early for!
Review 40:If you want the advantages of a central location, you need to be tolerant of high street noises!!
Review 41:Right in the middle of Bovey Tracey village with easy access to stunning long riverside and forest walks. Whole area very dog friendly. Excellent well kept and very clean accommodation with very friendly and efficient staff. Excellent food.
Review 42:Only small niggle was the noise of people chatting loudly, as my window was by the area some used for smoking but I still went to sleep ok!
Review 43:Super welcome: made to feel at home. comfortable room with so many extra's. Loved the fact that I didn't need ot bring much with me as was supplied!
Review 44:The wife Fi was free but never worked.
Review 45:The overall property was excellent with an amazing breakfast and very good bar and service. The beer was perfect with evidence of good barman ship.
Review 46:As the property was on the outside the seating areas for others were nearby and on one night it was very noisy.
Review 47:I had a 'little cottage' from the car park (one room up and one down) that was convenient to reach and depart from. It was quite private and had a small outside seating area.
Review 48:Bad wifi. The breakfast was not very complete. Yes for the English, but we dutch wanted some cheese and that was a problem. This was depending of the cook.
Review 49:Good food. The room is very comfortabele and friendly people.
Review 50:Our room was above the kitchen, which had a noisy extractor fan, but I am being a bit picky mentioning it! Shower was a bit weak.
Review 51:Cosy pub, with hotel like efficiency. Very nice breakfast. We stayed for 2 nights, I would have been happy to stay for a week.
Review 52:Noisy water pipes off and on during the night. Bathroom had a funny smell although it was very clean - probably needs looking at by a builder. Kettle etc not well set up to make tea/ coffee.
Review 53:Bath AND shower . Lovely big bedroom and comfortable bed. All clean and nice.Pub friendly and staff very good. In the middle of the town and public parking very near by as well as pub parking - this was full.
Review 54:Smelly bathroom.dust all over the room.stains on bedside tables. Tripped on ruffled carpet.poor lighting on the stairs to room.opened the wardrobe and found a large picture of Oliver Rromwell hanging in the wardrobe wall !!! Shower very poor, went to close the shore door handle came off.Not impressed with our stay in a substance red room!!!!
Review 55:Stairs. Late breakfast times at weekend. We had appointments at 9.00am on both days so could not enjoy full breakfast.
Review 56:Nice quiet room .Good bathroom with plenty of hot water.
Review 57:Nil
Review 58:Gary the landlord & his staff are very customer focused. The facilities, room, restaurant and bar were first class. I had flown from Australia and required a hassle free two day stay which is exactly what I got. Highly recommended.
Review 59:Very comfortable room and a lovely evening meal. Breakfast also very good. Visiting a relative in Bovey Tracey so booked in for one night but would thoroughly recommend The Cromwell Arms.
Review 60:We had to use earplugs on one of the nights we stayed due to loud gurglings and banging from the radiator! But it was very quiet the second night. It's an old building (we had beams in our room) so this is a problem which is not easy to solve and the staff were very apologetic.
Review 61:Location is great, beautiful walks from the village, a short drive to Dartmoor National Park. Staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful.
Review 62:From the moment of our arrival the staff were very helpful, especially the Landlord. Our meals were excellent - our restrictive dietary requirements proved no problem for their chef. There was a good atmosphere generally and entertainment in the evenings if you chose to stay in and enjoy a drink.
Review 63:A glass of Prosecco is over £6 - far too expensive!!
Review 64:I liked the oldy worldy style of the pub/hotel. My room was perfect for my needs and all the staff I encountered were very pleasant and helpful.
Review 65:The bed was uncomfortable and the pillows were not very plump. Unfortunately because of the weather the windows rattled.
Review 66:Staff very helpful and lovely big breakfast to set you up for the day. Lively atmosphere in the evening
Review 67:The annex room was tiny, very near the drunken smokers out back. The sounds of bottles being thrown in the bin and the live bank did nothing to improve my sleep.
Review 68:Staff were informal and very friendly. Evening meal and breakfast both excellent
Review 69:Being asked to fill in all sorts of personal data to get free WIFI. Put me off and didn't bother filling in the details in the end.
Review 70:Staff were very good, the room was pretty good, the food was excellent, and the included breakfast was also very good and early in the morning as well. Very good value for money.
Review 71:nothing
Review 72:Everything. The staff were efficient and friendly, the rooms were warm and comfortable, the wifi easy to use, the food and drink excellent. This is an excellent pub with comfortable rooms and a welcoming bar with good food, highly recommended.
Review 73:I can't say it was a problem with the place more of an issue with us, we found the pillows a bit hard we both woke up in the night with headache's (and no not through drink).also we found the room in certain areas not light enough, e.g. by the dressing table, we were in room 7 so can't comment on the other rooms. although none of the negative comments will not stop us from going back again. we did not mention these things to the management as we were only staying 2 nights,
Review 74:We liked the location due to the fact we were visiting friends a few miles away, room very nice comfy beds, breakfast was lovely more than adequate.
Review 75:There was no proper wardrobe, just a cramped alcove with a hanger rail and a door.
Review 76:We had booked a room with a double bed but on arrival we found our room had twin beds. James, who was on duty, was most apologetic and was instrumental in rectifying the problem quickly. Throughout our stay he was very helpful and attentive.
Review 77:The requirement to climb stairs from bedroom to wardrobe and bathroom. The fact that the bathroom could not be accessed when the wardrobe door was open
Review 78:The food was excellent The staff were helpful
Review 79:One hour breakfast slot! Doesn't suit Parkrunners!
Review 80:The Cromwell Arms can easily be located in the town centre. Ample car parking can be found round the back of the pub. We received a very warm welcome. The facilities within the room were as requested complimented with a superb view over Dartmoor. Breakfast was plentiful with a large selection to choose from, everything was cooked to perfection.
Review 81:Nothing!
Review 82:Friendlyness of all the staff, great food, excellent location for seeing the moors. All in all a great trip and would not hesitate to book The Cromwell Arms again if we were ever visiting the area again.
Review 83:Nothing negative to report.
Review 84:Great quality Breakfast cooked to order. Excellent sausages and bacon.Evening meal menu was excellent choice from good old "pubgrub" to more "fine dining" as well. Good choice ofspecials too.
Review 85:No milk in room for morning tea. We should have noticed and asked. Giant door keys were a pain!
Review 86:Friendly service, good food, comfortable rooms, and well located for family visits we needed to make.
Review 87:Nothing to compain about at all.
Review 88:Fantastic staff, very welcoming. Rooms big & bed very comfortable. Plenty of room for clothes. Dressing table with draws, bedside cabinets with draws & lots of hangers in the wardrobe. Bathroom enormous with great shower. Breakfast 100% spot-on thank you
Review 89:The rain !!!!
Review 90:We like the place, the people - both staff & other local users. The Cromwell Arms staff make you welcome when you enter the building. Entertaining Quiz Nights (Sun & Tues) Convenient to visit our friends who re-located to Devon from South Yorkshire.
Review 91:Excellent hotel, exceptionally friendly staff (& locals) made me feel most welcome, especially as i was travelling alone. very comfortable rooms, slept like a log. Breakfast was excellent, great choice & friendly service. Evening meal was great too. Would highly recommend this hotel & would definetly stay again.
Review 92:Having to put the kettle on the floor to boil the water - minor niggle.
Review 93:The size of the room, it was quiet at night and slept well. I didn't eat at the hotel but went to a local Indian restaurant - mistake. I had eaten at the hotel in the past and should have done so again. Good breakfast.
Review 94:The breakfast was awful. It looked like it had been kept in the oven until we came down. A member of staff also handled our breakfast with her own hands. Must have been a bad day
Review 95:From the warm welcome, to the clean, spotless rooms, the hot shower to the soft warm beds, we will always use The Cromwell when we are delivering down Devnon
Review 96:Many of the rooms are unsuitable for people such as myself who have difficulty with stairs. In particular the single room I had booked had an upstairs bathroom and the staircase did not have proper rail, which was certainly a health and safety hazard for me. Some of the other bedrooms are on the second floor of the property. Whilst accepting that this is an old Devon building etc,it would have been helpful to have the fact highlighted that some of the rooms are only accessible/suitable for the fit and healthy. It would be helpful if your website gave the opportunity when searching to specify say ground floor accommodation or if lift facilities are required.
Review 97:Cleanliness of accommodation and helpfulness of staff
Review 98:lighting was poor especially for women trying to put on makeup. The window blind in our room could not be opened. No mirror over the sink in bathroom if wet shaving. Only 2 glasses/tea mugs in a 3 bedroom room. Liquid soap in bathroom.
Review 99:ambience, welcome, staff and location.
Review 100:Unfortunately our room only had a highlight type of window, we had come from Australia and it would have been nice to look out of a window.
Review 101:The age of the building and atmosphere was especially interesting
Review 102:Two very minor points: the shower taps seemed difficult to use; and the 2 staircases to our room were extremely steep (and would not be suitable for someone old and frail or who had mobility problems).
Review 103:The room was comfortable and spacious, the food we had was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful.
Review 104:Reception at the Bar - a little bit embarrasing being stared at by the locals. Four poster bed was a waste of time. It was a bed with four posts no curtains or embellishment and you could hardly get to the bathroom with the post in the way, if we were larger it would have been difficult. Room layout weird as well with TV in an odd place to watch from the bed.
Review 105:Breakfast was very good. Staff friendly
Review 106:the loutish behaviour and shouting at 1am from the street at the back of the pub as it went on for ages and needed the police to sort out.
Review 107:the friendliness and help from the bar manager when we first arrived Who went out of his way to get us settled in and to explain the late key policy.
Review 108:the friendliness of the staff the cleanliness of the hotel the room was spacious, spotlessly clean with tea/coffee facilities alarm clock/radio and flat screen TV. The breakfast was excellent something to suit everybody. 10/10 *****
Review 109:No food on offer on a Wednesday in September in the evening. Three hungry travellers had to eat at the nearby Claycutters Arms
Review 110:Excellent breakfast - one of the best I have had Pleasant people helpful when I left something behind Warned me there would be no food
Review 111:Shower was a bit noisy.
Review 112:The large room Friendliness of staff (they gave us breakfast even though we were late!) The food (and drink) The pub quiz (which we won!)
Review 113:Bed was a bit hard for me! but that's my personal preference.
Review 114:Food was excellent, friendly staff and lovely location. Very central location to see the sites around. The rooms were large and clean, with everything you needed. Including a fan for warm nights.
Review 115:Found our room was noisy, ok if you are not a light sleeper, next time I will request a quiet room.
Review 116:Loved the people you are made to feel welcome from the minute you arrive, nothing is too much trouble and the staff and locals include you in events. The food is excellent and freshly cooked so you may have to wait (not long) and it is worth it the food is delicious. Highly recommend.
Review 117:The bathroom was a bit dated but functional so not that bad .
Review 118:Great place to stay , friendly staff , good food and drink . Will definitely be staying here again .
Review 119:Unfortunately both nights we stayed had very very loud bands playing until almost midnight and then it took at least another 30mins for the very noisy crowd (right beneath my window) to disperse. I found this extremely unsatisfactory but it was August Bank holiday weekend I suppose. My husband and I (both in our 70s) found this hard to take. However we hadn't paid very much for the rooms so probably were in the worse part of the hotel.
Review 120:Staff we're very welcoming. Rooms were fine .breakfasts very good. Very good value for the money we paid. It was just very unfortunate that the weekend we were there had very (head banging) groups playing ,also the young revellers noise didn't stop until after 12.30 . I appreciate that we are old (mid 70s) maybe younger guests may not have minded as much. Maybe if we had paid more for the rooms we might have been put in a quieter part of the hotel.
Review 121:Steep stairs up to our room in attic, especially as we had heavy case as we are going onto other destination.
Review 122:Good location for our purpose to attend friend's wedding. Nice town with lots of little shops and cafes. Excellent breakfast in Cromwell Arms, would stay there again.
Review 123:Difficult staircases to reach the top floor room.Bad lighting at the bottom of the first flight of stairs
Review 124:Friendly welcoming staff and excellent food.
Review 125:The manager has a very strong personality, one of friends found it a little too much !
Review 126:Food was superb, the room was spacious and very clean and tidy. Great staff who were very helpful.
Review 127:Very friendly welcome, rooms had all obviously been updated fairly recently, so a really good nights sleep. Truly excellent breakfast, wonderful fresh fruit salad and a choice of full English breakfast for either meat eaters or vegetarians.
Review 128:the bed was very hard and I prefer a softer mattress so the sleep wasn't the greatest.
Review 129:The staff were very friendly, the breakfast in the morning was amazing and so quick, with unlimited juice and toast you can't go wrong. The room was very clean and spacious the bathroom was good.
Review 130:No WiFi in the room Loud airconditioning machine at the back of the hotel Bathroom (strange shower and why is the mirror not above the sink?)
Review 131:Close to Dartmoor Good restaurant
Review 132:The Arms has classic British plumbing: late risers need not expect hot showers. But that is true throughout much of the nation.
Review 133:Gary and Julie run a great place. We were in the family room, which would have housed 6 comfortably, and even had games for children and a portacrib. The breakfasts were superb, and we ate dinner each night at the Cromwell as well. Kind and professional staff, dedicated parking, scenic views, great beds. Marvelous.
Review 134:Noise level of rowdy party drinking outside under the position of our room. It went on well into the night.
Review 135:Efficiency of staff and quality of breakfast. Comfort of room
Review 136:Unfortunately we had inconsiderate noisy people in the room next to ours who were very early risers (6 am on both mornings we stayed). We were woken up by their loud voices and doors banging as they went in and out of their room.
Review 137:Has a lovely friendly atmosphere with well maintained spacious rooms. Excellent homemade food in restaurant and very friendly helpful staff that made us feel very welcome.
Review 138:Only a small point, but as residents our booked evening meal was slightly spoiled as we had to eat in the bar area as the restaurant was completely full up.
Review 139:Easy going yet efficient staff make you feel at ease on your arrival. Food excellent quality and wine nicely chilled. Room comfortable and welcoming.
Review 140:Tried to order food at 8.50pm (food served til 9) on the sat night and was told everything had been turned off in kitchen
Review 141:Very friendly staff and well decorated
