Reviews for The Slipway Hotel

Review 1:We were in the Lifeboat suite so had a fantastic view directly into the bay. As we had a seperate living room we had breakfast in our room. Staff were lovely and the restaurant was excellent

Review 2:Be careful which road you enter Port Isaac on, our satnav took us on an extremely narrow road. A little bit of a hair raising experience!

Review 3:Great location. We were upgraded to a room with a seaview, at no extra charge. Room had everything we needed. Beautiful food in the pub ( restaurant quality) . I highly recommend the Sea Bream on bed of lobster and crab risotto. If you are staying because you like Doc Martin, do the walking tour, Mike was our guide, he is an extra in the series and also works at the candy shop, which is used as Mrs Tishells pharmacy during filming. Mike was great, lots of info about Doc Martin behind the scenes. Parking is in the public car park ( a steep walk down to the pub) I recommend just taking an overnight bag for your stay.

Review 4:Room #1 bed - we could feel the springs in the mattress - for the price, we would expect a higher quality mattress. The shower was exceptionally small.

Review 5:Location could not be better. Breakfast was wonderful. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. Room #1 has a nice balcony.

Review 6:Our only disappointment was that the restaurant closed early on the Saturday night that we were there, due to a former member of staff getting married earlier that day. Although available at the shellfish supplier just opposite the hotel, sadly mussels were "off" this same Saturday evening.

Review 7:The location of this hotel, on the edge of the spectacular, natural Port Isaac, is excellent. This is still a part of 'real' Cornwall. We would particularly recommend 'The Lifeboat Suite'. Staff are very friendly, helpful and efficient.

Review 8:Nothing, couldn't find fault at all.

Review 9:The whole experience was amazing. The atmosphere of an old, comfortable, warm, friendly accomodation made the stay perfect. The food was mouth wateringly delicious. The room was clean airy and inviting. The staff were exceptionally professional, warm and friendly. Already considering a re-visit.

Review 10:The age of this building truly prevents the best efforts made by management to present modern day lodging. One must be prepared for slanting floors, showers & bathroom facilities to small for adults, but location rules the day. Restaurant was outstanding.

Review 11:Location is the best in Port Issac but you must consider this is a 250+ year old building. A Doc Martin fan is truly in for a perfect visit.

Review 12:Location is second to none in this special place in Cornwall, UK. I felt like I travelled back in time to a special fishing villiage. Not much has changed there, if at all. Buildings, narrow streets. If you watched Netflix series "Doc Martin" you will relive the experience personally. I saw the series, I went and was sorry I only spent three days there. It was known as Port Wenn in the series, real name is Port Issac. Don't miss dinners at hotel. Outstanding food. No need to go anywhere else. The Fish 'n Chips authentic. Have those at least one. Staff so accommodating. Lobster was not on the menu, so they offered to buy one across the street at the small fish market. They named it "Charlie." Yes, I did have a great meal with Charlie...Well, "with" is probably not the right word. I ate Charlie. I love lobster and especially when it is one hour old.

Review 13:Could do with a spruce up throughout.

Review 14:The location of the hotel, as it states on the tin- on the slipway to the harbour. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Food was good and good value for money. The building is very old so don't expect it to be to modern standards- it won't be. The building is quirky which is what you would expect given its age.

Review 15:The charm, the location, the view, and the owner was accommodating even though we arrived very late and our rental vehicle broke down in front of the hotel.

Review 16:The scorching hot towel rail in the shower room and the very small shower cubicle .

Review 17:The sea view bedroom. The helpfulness of the staff, happy staff , excellent food and service.

Review 18:The room we had was very small and the bath room very very small I think we paid for the view!

Review 19:The view from our room window was stunning. The staff were very friendly. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 20:bathroom a bit to small

Review 21:the location was stunning people were realy friendly.towels in bathroom were so nice, brilliant white fluffy and large, well done.

Review 22:Price. Limited menu, & expensive. Bar open to public, foul language by drunken customers. Bar staff saying nothing in fact joking with them at times

Review 23:Location.

Review 24:The room looked more like a youth hostel than a hotel, the breakfast spread did not look appetising and the breakfast area was also office space. In need of a good clean and updating

Review 25:The hotel is in a perfect location at the heart of Port Isaac

Review 26:Breakfast does not start till 08.30 which was a little late for us as we were walking the coast path and this delayed our start of a morning, as well as making car parking awkward as the free overnight parking expires at 09.00

Review 27:Great Location, Good food (Breakfast options particularly good with kippers, porridge and smoked salmon withscrambled eggs as options in addition to standard choices). Very generous quantities of tea and coffee options in rooms. Upmarket handwash from St Kitts Herbery in bathroom.

Review 28:Every single wooden surface in the room was sticky. Shower ran hot and cold on the same setting. Bathroom door opened everytime you moved in the small bathroom. Service at breakfast was poor

Review 29:Nice View Over The Harbour

Review 30:I am disabled and all the stairs and having to walk out side to our room 14 and upstairs again whe I booked I wasn't aware of it so after walking from the car park and endless stairs it's not disabled friendly and you should tell visitors that when they book

Review 31:We didn't think the parking was so far two years ago it wasn't like that

Review 32:very helpful and very friendly staff they couldn't do enough for you .the bed was comfortable and clean The breakfast and evening meal was wholesome and fresh A complete pleasure to stay there

Review 33:No wifi if the Lifeboat House annexe, and don't expect mobile reception in the area around the hotel. (Obviously poor phone reception is not a fault of the hotel)

Review 34:Great food, evening dinner was excellent and plenty of it.

Review 35:The rooms were ok and clean, but you have to remember that the building is old, so watch your head on those beams!! The bed itself was ok but the mattress was a tad uncomfortable.

Review 36:Location was good and the staff were helpful and friendly Breakfast was good and the restaurant was excellent

Review 37:No criticism really but room was small due to age of building this can't be helped and does add to the charm x

Review 38:Location is brilliant and everything was clean

Review 39:Room in need of basic maintenance eg toilet seat attachment broken (not fixed in our two nights); door and window furniture loose in need of maintenance eg jammed etc; window seals badly deteriorated. No WiFi in room

Review 40:Unique Location and Character Experience Good size room. Good breakfast etc

Review 41:Cramped room and shower-room were over-priced. Better information on access and parking would be helpful.

Review 42:In the heart of the port so everything close by.

Review 43:We stayed for three nights and the towels weren't changed at all during our stay. Couldn't get wifi in room 14.

Review 44:Staff were lovely, room was quiet and cosey, breakfast was nice, location was amazing.

Review 45:An excellent position overlooking the harbour. We were upgraded so had a room which looked directly over the beach and harbour. Cosy sitting room available.

Review 46:Mattress a bit old and thin, otherwise room was very comfortable.

Review 47:Absolutely gorgeous location right in the middle of everything you want to see. Fantastic cooked breakfast and lovely old pub for a drink.

Review 48:WiFi signal not strong enough to cover the whole hotel - never managed to connect...

Review 49:Extremely friendly staff who do everything possible to ensure you enjoy your stay.

Review 50:The bed and pillows were not comfortable. Was quite expensive for the level of accomadation

Review 51:The location was great. Helpful, friendly staff. Really enjoyed our dinner in the resturant

Review 52:No parking at all.....had to drop stuff off and park up a very narrow steep hill, quite a tough walk up the hill

Review 53:Lots of character, quirky, fab location and lovely views

Review 54:The last time I came was over 20 years ago and the hotel now seems very tired and weary. It looked and even smelled like it really needed a good wash and brush up. From the dirty front door , the rusty railings It didn't give a good feeling from the start. The bed was a really cheap mattress which left me feeling very sore and achy. I would rather have stayed somewhere else. Sorry.

Review 55:Breakfast

Review 56:I ate at the restaurant in the evening. I rate the food very average and wouldn't eat there again if I returned . I advised staff who argued with me about my opinion.

Review 57:The situation of the Prpperty

Review 58:In our (an expensive one) appetizer one item was lacking and the waitress didn't tell us about that. The food was mostly adequate but the crab tagliatelle was a big disappointment: the pasta was overcooked and the dish was altogether a mushy plate of unrecognizable ingredients.

Review 59:A very picturesque place with nice personnel. The food in the restaurant could have been a bit more refined for the price.

Review 60:Parking is a big problem - take only the minimum luggage. We stayed in the family room in the attic that had very low ceilings. This was fine for my wife (5ft 3ins) but not so good for me (5ft 11ins).

Review 61:Lovely location right in the centre or the village, very close to the sea. Very quiet and peaceful, the only noise was the sea and wind.

Review 62:Having to carry our bags down the steep hill from the car park and then up again. A courtesy mini bus would be very much appreciated!!

Review 63:Staff very friendly, food really good.

Review 64:It was very poor value for money at £150 for one night B&B. Sadly the food was not brilliant nor reasonably priced. The room was small because they had to take space to make an ensuite but this is not reflected in the tarriff. Plug in the sink did not work

Review 65:The location was lovely but more information should be given about accessibility. The staff were very nice and helpful. We had a room with a balcony and view of the harbour.

Review 66:Dinner meal took a long while to come, was told to book as the restaurant was always fully booked and only u\another couple eating. Meal was just ok. Asked and paid for a room overlooking the harbour, could hardly see the harbour from our room. Expensive for what we got

Review 67:WiFi not available in my room and no mobile phone signal so lost contact with family and friends during my stay. Mobile phone signal ok once further up into the village.

Review 68:Staff friendly and helpful

Review 69:Lack of parking, and access to the place by car is really the only drawback. But it's a fishing village of antiquity, which must not be torn up for such things. The hotelrequesting use of the lane on it's south side could be one way to go. The acquisition of a cottage on that side to be removed so that cars can park, and/or at least turn around could be another option, however unfortunate. Some place near the phone box.

Review 70:Location can't be beat! The staff are really nice, and helpful.

Review 71:Food finishes at 9pm everywhere in Port Isaac so order early....no hardship just worth knowing. Curtains in room five could do with changing.

Review 72:The location was superb. Breakfast was delicious, happy chef! Jonny greeted us with smiles and was very cheerful and helpful. Room five had a wonderful view of the harbour. Helpful staff.

Review 73:Had to make a very long hike down a steep hill into the village because there's no parking or shuttle service.

Review 74:We stayed 2 nights in Room 2 which gave us an opportunity to watch filming of a scene from our private balcony then go into the street to meet Martin Clunes. Staff alerted us to the time of the filming. Excellent breakfast.

Review 75:No car space near hotel so had to use public car park at the top oh a very steep narrow road. Not good for the unfit! The suite was in need of a paint job and new sofa and chairs as they had seen better days

Review 76:Position of hotel, absolute waterfront. Lifeboat suite gave us the space we needed as we had loads of luggage due to a seven week holiday from Oz. The staff were all friendly and helpful and breakfast was adequate

Review 77:One suggestion is to provide information on the parking and advise particularly overseas visitors to be aware of the very small and steep roads which impact on driving to the hotel.

Review 78:The staff were extremely polite and helpful. And the location is just amazing. I would certainly recommend the Slipway as a restful destination.

Review 79:Beds need upgrading slightly uncomfortable.

Review 80:Friendly staff. Excellent choice of food. Breakfast was lovely. Location of hotel was superb. Hotel was lovely & clean. Free wi-fi.

Review 81:Slightly noisy with the bar underneath our room.

Review 82:Love Port Isaac and the hotel is in the heart of it. Loved the little patio that looked out on the beach. Nice and roomy. Clean. Good breakfast.

Review 83:Staff were rushing, we customers were in the way.Its the first time we have had to spoon down cereals with waitress hovering over us with cooked breakfast in hands.

Review 84:Couldn't stay more than four days

Review 85:We thought the location was wonderfully situated, right at the head of the harbor and great views from our room #4 Breakfast was excellent and a nice variety.

Review 86:Our room overlooking the outside bar seating was a perfect place to experience life in Pt. Isaac. Views were gorgeous. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Review 87:The room was overpriced. There was nothing wrong with the room, it was clean and comfortable, but compared to other places it is overpriced.

Review 88:The location was good. Excellently cooked food.

Review 89:Very small bathroom and shower Early morning engines...I think the fishermen going out but part of the charm and we did have our window open!

Review 90:Staff excellent.very good dinner and super friendly.

Review 91:I loved that we were in the heart of Port Isaac. The Slipway is theplace to people watch and to sight cast members of the show Doc Martin! You can walk everywhere from The Slipway. It is a funky, old, but iconiclandmark in Port Isaac - a bit chopped up and with lots of stairs. Thestaff is awesome and can't do enough for their guests. Thebreakfast, which is included was wonderful and you had a choice of whatto eat. Our Canadian dollar is very low against the British pound sorooms and food seem to be expensive when taking that into consideration.Otherwise, the food is good and the service is exceptional.

Review 92:Even though we upgraded to superior double room there was barely enough room to place two suitcases and ourselves. Bathroom very "bijou"!

Review 93:Obviously the location; the staff were very freindly and obliging. Excellent breakfast. Despite the space issues we had a blast, although a little pricey given the "quaintness" and limitations of the room.

Review 94:Our room was quite tired looking, with old carpet and a faded old curtain. There was an unpleasant smell in the room.

Review 95:Great location, right opposite the water, with a lovely view from our bedroom window. Our room was quite spacious. Breakfast was very good.

Review 96:We stayed in the Lifeboat Suite which meant we were away from the main part of the hotel - the harbour view was worth every penny of what we paid. We had 2 bedrooms, separate lounge diner, and a large bathroom. A lovely mini-break - wish we stayed longer, especially as this suite is up for sale.

Review 97:This is the only hotel out 14 nights in England that took the fullaccommodation cost for two rooms at the time of booking. Very crossabout that. I know they do it because if you had not payed you would notstay there no Parking is available. To leave a vehicle overnightrequires about a half mile walk each way Very difficult to get a cardown to the hotel to drop off luggage.Showers are shocking, the floor isso uneven you almost run to the window and the bed slopes down hill atquite an angle. Take a tip and stay somewhere at the top of the verysteep hill.

Review 98:The unique village location.

Review 99:no parking but we knew that when we booked. the food was good but all the restaurants in the village had very samey menus, particularly with the fisherman's market across the road.

Review 100:central location and friendly staff

Review 101:No rattler on tap, although next door did. There is nothing to Complain about.

Review 102:Location, staff, facilities, food, all fantastic. If you are over 6'3 it might be a but of a headache for you as low ceilings. Overall brilliant

Review 103:In U.S if your food is not sitting well - you can order something else. This happened, and we were charged for the entree. It was not what had been described and was surprised that we were charged anyway. I guess a difference in customs. My husband's fish has also been undercooked. The soup and salad were delicious, however.

Review 104:the location and town are wonderful

Review 105:As the roads are really narrow lane ways, though very cute is not place for out-of-towers! Only locals drive down these lanes at top speed! Would have been very helpful if we knew to park at the top public car park instead of nearly having a coronary driving down, getting stuck and then trying to get back up!

Review 106:The position was great, the food excellent and bed very comfy. Staff were very friendly and chilled, loved the atmosphere. Loved watching Doc Martin being filmed outside our room balcony!!

Review 107:Bed was a bit uncomfortable in that you could feel some of the springs. We were on the first floor balcony and the marquis roof of the outdoor area could do with a good clean.

Review 108:fantastic location right on the harbour. Great guest lounge. So much character. Just as it should be. Happy friendly staff especially the Chef -

Review 109:The low door to the bedroom can be raised considerably with a little carpentry. The water pressure should not drop to zero from time to time.

Review 110:The Slipway has the best location in Port Isaac (across from the actual town slipway). The staff, breakfast, and dining are top notch. We occupied the attic room with its white sloping walls, exposed black beams and narrow windows overlooking the harbor and the town. The water pressure was intermittent and I frequently hit my head on the doorframe even though I am only 5 ft. 6 in. tall.

Review 111:Our room was over a boiler room, and above the extractor fans for kitchen. the room was so noisy we couldn't sleep in it and had to move to another room. It was stifflingly hot with not enough ventilation. Very disappointing.

Review 112:Location in town helpful staff

Review 113:access to the hotel is disaster. It does state no parking but the car park is over a mile away.To try and bring luggage down to the slipway is difficult. The climb up the hill is really steep.Fortunately I am a good walker.

Review 114:To see Port Isaac but there is not much to see.

Review 115:The low ceilings. But hey! You are in very old buildings

Review 116:I really loved our location. We had the family suite. It was a great size but had very very low ceilings so we bumped heads a few times which was not pleasant. The staff were great. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 117:Couldn't get a decent WiFi connection, No apologies from staff or anyone the next morning when the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night ( no fire)

Review 118:We loved the location, Good food and a nice room, very clean facilities.

Review 119:Our double room with a sea view was very small and the bathroom cramped. The table and chairs and the balcony were dirty with seagull 'poo'. Whilst recognising this is a permanent problem for the location, we think this should have been cleaned given the cost of the room.

Review 120:Great location with views of the picturesque harbour. Friendly and helpful staff.

Review 121:The room was not suitable for young children. It has a steep staircase without a railing on one side that would allow a small child to fall several feet. The doorways and toilet don't allow for someone over 5'3" to use comfortably, unless you enjoy sitting sideways on the toilet. The bathroom door doesn't close, the mattresses are old and uncomfortable, and the carpets and decor are beginning to show their age. I realize that the age of the building provides some limitations, but paying $300 a night for a room in this state is ridiculous. The staff couldn't have cared less that we were unhappy and offered no compensation.

Review 122:Most of the staff were nice even if they weren't willing to do anything about changing our room.

Review 123:Nothing

Review 124:Absolutely fantastic location with views of the picturesque working harbour. Comfortable with friendly staff and excellent food make this a great place for a relaxing weekend.

Review 125:Was told prior to booking that a shuttle bus would take us back to Main Car Park after our visit. however, shuttle bus was not available, nor a taxi.

Review 126:Position opposite harbour, with sea view. Central location of hotel which made it easier for my mother to walk and enjoy either side of village. Very appetising breakfast and helpful gentleman on duty.

Review 127:The glass in the bathroom fell on the floor and broke. It was also expensive to park

Review 128:Comfortable room, great Wi-Fi, nice breakfasts, and the restaurant also had very good dinners.

Review 129:Accepting we booked last minute and just out of season we found that the overall interior decor was a bit tired. The dead flowers in unchanged water and burned out candles on the restaurant tables at the evening meal were minor details that slightly lessened the experience.

Review 130:Freindly welcoming staff, comfortable room, superb breakfast. Good location.

Review 131:too many stairs not very good if elderly or have leg problems no wheelchair friendly bathroom very small and compact

Review 132:Very good Location to what we wanted to see ,staff very friendly ,breakfast very good and hot, hotel made us sandwiches for us too take to our room on arrival as we arrived late

Review 133:There are downsides but not to the Hotel except the local drunk who was very abusive

Review 134:It is what it is, very quaint and now popular because of the Doc Martin series.

Review 135:Nothing to not like

Review 136:Very warm welcome on arrival, excellent room, fantastic service, breakfast delicious, hot & plenty, great service from staff, have already recommended & book for later next month, Thanks both

Review 137:Having to leave to come home.

Review 138:We visited The Slipway Hotel as phase one of our delayed honeymoon and as a start to 2015. I can say with hand on heart that we arrived with open minds and received 100% satisfaction from one of the cutest and lovely hotel either of us has stayed at. We both have strong connections with Cornwall and Port Isaac was the right place for us to be on this special occasion. The staff are all charming and care very much about their beloved hotel which is open all year round except for Christmas Day the atmosphere is just right with the location being bang in the centre of Port Isaac perfect for all the local bars and restaurants. Parking is a problem for everyone including the residents so do not expect that convenience and you will not be disappointed, Port Isaac was built before cars were invented and has changed very little since which is the towns charm. The food at Slipway is excellent with generous portions and we were both satisfied with our breakfast and evening meals. If there was to be a negative thing it would have to be the day we had to come home. A special thanks from us goes to the lovely Lucy who kept us entertained with her sparkling character X

Review 139:The time food stopped serving was quite early and any hotel which you pay this amount of money for would be til 10pm, the restaurant hours were not mentioned upon booking in, unfortunately I arrived in the evening and by the time I got ready, the hotel had stopped serving food and due to it's location we were unable to have a takeaway delivered so we were unable to eat for the night.

Review 140:I have stayed here many times, the hotel is great and has amazing views, staff are really friendly and the rooms are clean and a high standard, a really nice breckfast aswell.
