Reviews for The Imperial Hotel
Review 1:Restaurant menu sadly lacking in inspiration. So used one of the town centre restaurants of which there was good selection only a short walk away.
Review 2:The sea view from the bedroom window
Review 3:The staff were very efficient and the food excellent value. The superior room 30 was a little overrated, but had a sea view and balcony. But the lighting was very poor,
Review 4:Breakfast was meagre....Half a rasher of bacon does not make a FULL English. Strongly suspect that the scrambled eggs were made from powdered eggs, completely tasteless and anaemic, served on one piece of dry toast.
Review 5:Brilliant location and the dining hall is spectacular.
Review 6:Room was naff, poorly decorated, poorly lit, decor was shabby and at best amateurish, the bathroom was as old as gods dog and the shower was a joke and every floorboard creaked
Review 7:Location , staff
Review 8:Breakfast was served a little cold and we were unable to order Earl Grey tea as it wasn't available which seemed odd in such a well appointed hotel The breakfast room wasn't overly busy but perhaps a lot of staff had been let go at the end of the season? I felt it was the only area that had room for improvement and generally there was the air of the staff being a little subdued ,again possibly due to their being a skeleton staff on.
Review 9:I was visiting my old college town on a whim and booked the hotel online as a late booking for just the one night .Very convenient for town and beach walks. Room was quiet and had an outside little seating area that was a sun trap for the October sun. There was a spacious bathroom . The bed was very comfortable and I slept very well. The hotel was a very grand building with amazing grounds , hardly changed from how I remembered it .It was tastefully decorated and the dining/ball room had spectacular period features. The hotel bar was very quiet but we were very near the restaurant that we had booked for the evening -the town centre is just a minute away and Exmouth is very easy to find your way around .
Review 10:Lifts to floor 1 & 2 but the room we had was on floor 1.5 so also meant taking some stairs. We were OK with it, in fact lovely sea view and private balcony, but might catch others out.
Review 11:Great location.
Review 12:Breakfast waiter had no clue what a croissant was - and the one he finally delivered was inedible.
Review 13:Being put in a ground floor room so I could access internet in the room.
Review 14:Asked for some laundry to be done, instead of saying they don't do it they ruined several articles af clothing one of which was brand new trousers. ...emailed but no reply
Review 15:The tradition.
Review 16:for the price rooms need upgrading but was ok for 1 night
Review 17:very good location close to beach and town centre and park lady on the front desk was very nice and helpful
Review 18:No ready prepared fresh fruit at breakfast. Staff in dining room not always alert, no cups and other items on table gone unnoticed. Some chatting amongst staff in bar.
Review 19:Good location. Lovely decor and building. Sun trap terrace. Good selection of hot food breakfast. Helpful staff on reception.
Review 20:location of the room. asked for a room at the top, ended up in the basement.the heating did not come on, so they supplied an heater.
Review 21:breakfast, they gave us what we asked for.
Review 22:8am start for breakfast is a little late if you have plans to make the most of the weather. Hotel was well over priced for how we used it. We only really needed a bed for the night and breakfast in the morning but left booking really late and so this was pretty much the only option.
Review 23:Proximity to beach & town. Staff accommodated our request for an early breakfast.
Review 24:Sometimes we couldn't have the advertised meals within the advertised times. Staff were always polite about this and suggested suitable alternatives..
Review 25:I am amazed that more people (guests and non-guests) didn't use the terrace/garden dining. It was really lovely, prices are reasonable, and it is very convenient from the beach. The food was great too.
Review 26:STAINED TOWELS (LOOKED LIKE A PEN STAIN). SQUARE TOILET SEAT ON ROUND TOILET. DUST ROUND WALL LIGHTS.
Review 27:RIGHT LOCATION. BIG CAR PARK. NO NOISE. CAHNGED THE MATRESS WHEN WE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SLOP ON IT.
Review 28:Lighting. For economy reasons they use low wattage bulbs - unfortunately this make reading, at times, very difficult. The lack of a "Major Domo" in the Dining room means some of the less experienced Waitresses struggle to produce a decent service.
Review 29:Location - short walk to both Town centre and Seafront.
Review 30:The room was very tired and the sheets on one of the beds was badly marked/stained.
Review 31:The location is excellent and close to both the beach and the town. The staff were very courteous and helpful.
Review 32:Evening meal, sea food platter was all deep fried from freezer and chicken taking did not fit the trade descriptions Act, it was simply breast of chicken with rice and tomato sauce.
Review 33:Location, bar and terrace.
Review 34:when I booked the hotel I asked for a room overlooking the sea i .was given a room at the back (ACTUALLY THE FRONT) which was filled with fumes from the Shearings coaches which stopped under my window!!!
Review 35:most of the staff were friendly and helpful
Review 36:This was a most unpleasant stay. Tired rooms in bad need of refurbishment. Grey worn towels, ripped wallpaper, cobwebs on lights. Very poor lighting. Very uncomfortable beds. Damp bathroom. A large screw was found on the floor. We paid £250 for two nights with breakfast and were very unhappy. Staff did not ask how our stay was. I have various pictures which will be emailed separately.
Review 37:Breakfast lovely but staff need to get a bit more organised. Told when we entered dining room to sit anywhere but when we sat down another member of staff stated someone who was staying for a few days always sat there!
Review 38:Lovely room with sea view and balcony.
Review 39:The lift does not properly serve the "new wing" in which our "deluxe twin room" was located. There is a curious and (especially with luggage) often tiresome walk upstairs and then - almost immediately - downstairs again required to reach rooms like ours (just as in the famous comedy "Fawlty Towers").
Review 40:Ideal location for all Exmouth attractions with great staff and efficient breakfast arrangements.
Review 41:Hotel seemed tired - hot water sporadic and no bath plug at first! Flying ants round patio door, which was also very stiff to operate. We had a la carte dinner one night and had to sign the bill as we ordered each course.
Review 42:Excellent position, easy parking, helpful reception staff. Food OK, grounds extensive and could be lovely.
Review 43:Hotel decor tired, and receptionist stressed which made us fell unwelcome. We ordered newspapers, but weren't told we'd have to pay for these in cash. Don't mind paying, but fumbling around with small change seemed petty. There were flying ants in the bedroom (although to be fair, these were removed as soon as we pointed them out)
Review 44:Asked for herbal tea, and was offered a generous quantity of teabags to use in the room. Good location.
Review 45:We were expected to pay on check in. Then we found out that our room was on the lower ground floor and despite it being summer it was cold and damp. Really cheap furniture and a hard bed. No wifi at all in the room. The breakfast was very basic and poor quality ingredients were used.
Review 46:The location - well placed for town and beach. Good parking and lovely grounds.
Review 47:At dinner we both would have liked to have steak but unfortunately we were told it was unavailable, so we had dishes off the a'lacarte menu which were uninspiring
Review 48:The room / bathroom were clean ,the bed comfortable ,with ample hot water and a balcony with lovely views to the sea.
Review 49:Enish breakfast was very small, service was ok but not friendly or very welcoming. No room service
Review 50:Location couldn't be better, room had a great view
Review 51:The position where our room was, access to room very very poor you had to go to number 2 on lift then up a few steps then down 2 flights of stairs to get to room no help was available I am elderly and disabled
Review 52:Access to rooms was appalling. Do not stay if travelling with young children. Disabled lift not in use so ended up carrying pram and child up and down numerous flights of stairs. Really poor.
Review 53:Good location on beach front.
Review 54:The lift didn't serve all the floors directly. We were on the second floor and to get there we had to go to the first floor, go down some stairs, go into the stair well and climb more stairs up to the second floor. For people who were even slightly disabled this was quite a trek.
Review 55:Hotel felt very old fashioned generally. Staff could have been more cheerful in the dining room at breakfast. The old hairdryer in the bedroom should have been replaced years ago, according to the date of safety check label that was on it's base.
Review 56:Modernised room with lovely view overlooking sea and gardens. Quiet location and within walking distance of town and beach. Bed really comfortable. Bathroom modern and plenty of hot water available. A special budget price made it value for money. Good car parking facilities.
Review 57:Could not get WiFi in room, But then I didn't make enquires about it.
Review 58:Very pleasant hotel to stay. Staff very good. Cheaper than the Premier Inn across the road when we stayed (May). With breakfast it was a good deal.
Review 59:Room very drab . Desperately needed an over hall. Almost other things silly thing like a horrible rusty bin in bathroom which costs hardly anything to replace. Made you feel that they didn't really care!
Review 60:Bar area
Review 61:The way he hotel attended to my request for a parking space when i explained to them i had trouble walking, a space was reserved for me right outside the hotel entrance and i was offered any assistance i needed with my baggage and myself, and with anything i needed, I think this sums up the general feeling about my stay there, and i take this opportunity to say a big: Thank you!
Review 62:No wifi in the rooms
Review 63:Staff, quality and comfort of the room, refurbished bathroom, inclusive breakfast, parking, short walk from seafront and price far cheaper than Premier Inn
Review 64:Because I was on business i required the internet but it wasn't really very good in the room. It was more for the main areas of the hotel , ie the lounge , bar area ,etc.It was winter time so I really didn't make good use of any out door facilities apart from t he beach that was very close to the hotel.
Review 65:Really friend and efficient staff.Nothing was too much trouble for them. Even though they were very busy with a holiday coach full of people ,breakfast was served very fast .It was hot. Would definitely take my family back for a stay at the the hotel.
Review 66:cant really complain about much in view of only paying £55 for a double for the night. Free wifi only available in the lounge, not in the room.
Review 67:Room was clean and comfortable but furnishings a little tired. Breakfast was good but didn't quite match the description of breakfast in the hotel information pack in the room. Excellent price however with good sea views. Clientele seemed to be mainly elderly so a nice quiet environment.
Review 68:Nothing.
Review 69:Long journey from Liverppol for family funeral. Pleasant reception staff - so a good start. Room was nice, good comfort. Lovely location; friendly waitresses at breakfat. Enjoyed my one night stay.
Review 70:I know that I wouldn't want to work on a Sunday morning serving someone's breakfast... However, if that is your job then smile and be happy! Both mornings when we went for breakfast, there was no consistency... Apart from grumpy faces and bad service. First day we ate here, we were shocked at the portion sizes. My full English breakfast consisted of a small sausage, a rasher of bacon, a poached egg - it was cooked to perfection though so compliments to the chef... When you know how much a weatherspoons breakfast costs and knowing that most hotels and restaurants are running at a premium GP% - I thought that was a little off. My friend was asked whether he would like Tea or coffee and whether white or brown bread... The girl then came back with two pots of coffee (I wanted Tea - but was never asked) and I wanted brown toast. I had to ask for bowls as there were none for cereal, no apple juice to drink and the girls seemed to be unorganised and out of their zones. I was annoyed also by the fact that when our plates were brought out the girl who had just been wiping the tables had both her thumbs in baked beans whilst carrying them over.
Review 71:The decor was lovely and modern with a classic twist. Some ideas were excellent and I like the fact that these things are easy to improve on!
Review 72:staff were most helpful especially when one of our party was taken ill and needed a wheelchair and lower level room. Friendly and considerate when we couldnt leave before 10 due to medical appointment
Review 73:The only thing you could down mark it was the decoration was tired but this did not detract from the overall enjoyment of our stay
Review 74:Staff excellent, meals very good quality but to some people not enough, entertainment we saw was great, beds comfortable and the room a good size, great location and views, will be back again.
Review 75:The full english breakfast was not very filling it was nice food and ok for the older guests but not very filling for a younger builder
Review 76:Location and staff were great
Review 77:Breakfast good well cooked pleasant surroundings excellent staff. Lunch time snack value for money but evening meal was not as good as it could have been ( But we only were in to eat 1 night so may have been an off night)
Review 78:Location wonderful right on seafront staff absolutely brilliant.
Review 79:Not enough milk and tea in room 1 or 2 cups each is not enough for tea lovers. First night stay room was cold radiators weren't on and it was freezing.
Review 80:The view was great the room was nice. We stayed 2 nights but only planned on staying for one night but didn't want our holiday to end. On our second night the room was lovely and warm with a great view.
Review 81:one small gripe - smoking area was just outside reception, a better impression would be achieved if there was another allocated area away from the front for smokers to congregate
Review 82:room with an excellent sea view - comfortable and clean, good choice of breakfast - beautiful breakfast room and bar - tastefully decorated throughout
Review 83:Nothing to say here...
Review 84:Staff were great with the kids, two boys age 6 and 7 can be a hand full. Car park on site with plenty of space Sea views which the kids loved Lovely food Very comfy beds and big rooms
Review 85:Room could do with a lick of paint , bathroom could do with up dating , staff not very helpful , wasn't told if we wanted evening meal had to pre book , plus not very welcoming on arrival , hotel is more for the over 60 felt like a nursing home , but fine if u just wanted a base to stay , breakfast was ok not the best ,
Review 86:Lovely hotel very quiet slept very well, main hotel had been up dated, lovely views of the sea, didn't have to use our car , all in walking distance .
Review 87:Poor lighting in room making it difficult to read with; first breakfast was served cold. Not offered a sea view room but never told it was because of the price we paid.
Review 88:Location, room, heating was good ie not too hot.Tastefully decorated.
Review 89:A whole glass fronted entrance door came off in my hands ... I found myself apologising for this in the English manner. I believe this was put in a near miss register and rectified.
Review 90:Staff were outstanding Location superb
Review 91:Heating in room only adequate. Could not get towel rail to work.
Review 92:Well decorated through out. Very central position. Beautiful dining area. Breakfast good choice and well staffed.
Review 93:The Bedroom was very dark, poor lighting. Uncomfortable mattress . Hotel was empty except for a coachload of retired people. I asked for sea view and were told there were none available. yet the hotel was empty. Why not give me a sea room, the cost of cleaning the room must be the same and I may come and even recommend.
Review 94:Location and Car Park. The waitress in the breakfast room who smiled and was very friendly.
Review 95:Old/damaged bath panel appearance let overall "rating" down
Review 96:Good overall presentation of hotel and facilities used, food hot, clean and quiet
Review 97:Very good position for town and sea front. Very comfortable facilities with good furnishings. Excellent value for money. Room a good size with good en-suite facilities. Would stay again.
Review 98:Its a shame the Evening meal choice was so al a cart or we would have eaten in the resteraunt insted we went to town to find food.
Review 99:The location was nice ideal for our purpose
Review 100:A superb looking victorian building in need of a clean and a coat of paint.
Review 101:Interior is first class in appearance and cleanliness. Service from all staff was exemplary. The position on the seafront and so close to the town is ideal.
Review 102:The mattress of the double bed did sag somewhat that made us 'roll' into the middle of the bed. Perhaps it is time for a replacement mattress!
Review 103:All departmental staff,(reception, house keeping, bar, restaurant, were all very polite, smartly dressed and a credit to the hotel.
Review 104:Nothing at all.
Review 105:Booked late, 1 night, asked for sea view, never thought we'd get it but we did. Nice room, and for the price a great deal. Will use this hotel again.
Review 106:no heating or hot water in room we booked and another room offered had to ask manager simply for a room with hot water eventually solved by that time we were totally cheesed off after a nearly a 5 hour journey. not what you need!!!!!!!!!
Review 107:location
Review 108:Breakfast was not open until 8.00am but helpful staff took our order immediately so we were out by 8.10 as we had an appointment but it was all a rush. An earlier breakfast time would have been helpful.
Review 109:Easy parking, nice view from our window, clean well appointed room, quiet ambience and helpful staff.
Review 110:Restaurant staff were charming, helpful and hard-working but, I fear, a little lacking in training in some of the niceties. Bedroom loo cistern slow to fill and weak flush.
Review 111:Friendliness and helpfulness of staff. Receptionist happily changing booking from twin to double room - with splendid sea view - at no extra cost. Smart and comfortable room. Lots of hot water.
Review 112:Nothing that we could fault the hotel on, except Wifi was slow and not available in rooms.
Review 113:The whole experience was very good even though we only stayed for 1 night.
Review 114:Cold room on arrival housekeeping had left window wide open (mid November) and heating wasn't on !
Review 115:Only used hotel to sleep but was well worth the money.
Review 116:TV did not get Any BBC programs During our visit I missed the F1 GP. Breakfast only one sausage one slice of bacon. Door to our room needed painting it looked like still in primer.
Review 117:Great location. Good staff. Free wifi. Bar area very nice and not to expensive.
Review 118:the first room we were offered was awful so had to pay an upgrade which had not been made clear on the internet site. the view of the carpark was horrible. balcony door could not close properley so woke up cold in the night when the central heating was turned off.
Review 119:fabulous view from our superior room. delicious food and helpful staff
Review 120:Barman unhelpful and acted bored. Arrived 5 minutes too late for dinner and bar had only plain crisps - no nuts or other snacks.
Review 121:Reception staff were lovely and helpful.
Review 122:Although we had a balcony, the trees blocked a lot of the view.. Why not cut them down and plant a flower bed. If I want to see trees, ill go to a country hotel. We didn't like the breakfast. No proper great at the door, just told sit anywhere. When we did sit down, was then told we had to move as that table set up for dinner.. Come on, if I want to sit by the window and look at the view, couldn't you swap the wine glasses for tea cups? Breakfast itself is down to a budget, one rasher, one sausage, one half tomato and scrambled egg from a powder. No prunes, fruit, nuts, no yoghurt on display. It seems the hotel caters for bargain basement old peoples coach parties, which is a great shame. The bar was empty at 9pm, presumably everybody gone to bed. Could have been the music from the war years put punters off.
Review 123:Position of the hotel is outstanding. It has beautiful grounds, fantastic views, and easy parking. Rooms are large and spacious. Most of the staff are excellent.
Review 124:Breakfast was okay but our ham and eggs was very cold ham with hard poached eggs; second day I had scrambled egg (warm) with very cold smoked salmon. I had expected the smoked salmon to be cooked in the scrambeled egg (all hot therefore). I amglad we did not choose to eat our main meal in the hotel.
Review 125:The room was very clean and nicely decorated. The lounge areas were welcoming.
Review 126:The fan in the batroom sounded a bit like a helcopter taking off....£19.95 a bit steep for the special menu at dinner although food very good
Review 127:Very friendly staff...lovely room with a balcony looking out to the promenade...lift was working and very quiet which is always a bonus
Review 128:The main entrance to the hotel in the carpark is poor for such an imposing building. You feel you are entering through the service/kitchen door. It is visually unattractive, involves negotiating a flight of steep steps and is especially difficult for visitors who are on coaching holidays and tend to be generally less mobile. There is a sign to a lift around the corner by the service area but we saw folk struggling with the steps. There are huge unused grounds around the hotel which must be difficult to maintain, but some landscaping should be undertaken to maintain the attractiveness of the hotel, especially as the Premier Inn being constructed next door will inevitably compete to exploit the location. Filling in the swimming pool and constructing an attractive terrace in its place is a positive change, but tackling the avenue of trees which obscures the seaview from many front facing rooms would also seem a necessary priority. The sea views are a major attraction of this hotel and we heard complaints from those who had expected sea views but saw only trees.
Review 129:We had our wedding reception at the Imperial Hotel in 1980, 34 years earlier to the day of our visit, when it had been owned by Trusthouse Forte. Finding ourselves revisiting Exmouth, we decided to stay the night at the hotel. We didn't mention the occasion, booked a standard room and were delighted to find we had a seaview. The room was very comfortable and we couldn't have been better pleased. The overall decor and layout of the public spaces had changed a bit but it was still recognisable. We did not eat dinner in the dining room as the vegetarian option did not appeal, but found plenty of new restaurants nearby. There was ample free parking and the Reception staff were welcoming and informative. The cooked breakfast was fine though few cold items eg no grapefruit, prunes, or fruit were available
Review 130:We were given our room , and told to go to the 2nd floor, when we got out of the lift we couldn't find our room, one of the cleaning lady's pointed out that we had to go down two flights of staires, bit of a pain with the suitcases, we just didn't feel it was good value for the price.
Review 131:A nice hotel, very good location, easy parking, a good breakfast, but at £220 for 2 nights it's over priced .
Review 132:The breakfast was awful, we had to find somewhere else to eat. My husband wanted hard boiled egg, the white was all runny. I had full english it was tasteless, tasted like all frozen food. Waitress left us for 15 or 20 mins b4 asking what we would like. Very poor, I would not stay here again.
Review 133:The cleanliness of the hotel and location could not be disputed.
Review 134:Only problem we came across was inadequate signs when using the stairs for the reception area, along with another couple ended up on the ground floor and had to climb back up.
Review 135:Great location, friendly staff, good sized rooms. Did not eat, drink or sleep there, just watched the moon reflect on the sea out of the window, chatting and enjoying the peace and quiet.
Review 136:Being made to sit on a table on top of another couple as the restaurant was set for lunch and this was breakfast time. It was 930 and breakfast didn't finish until 10 and we only got a choice of 1 table. Was not happy about this.
Review 137:The reception staff day and night were lovely.
Review 138:The reception was not particularly friendly or welcoming. I feel a great deal could be done to improve that. I was sad that I was unable to get a room with a view especially as the room, although perfectly comfortable, was a very drab brown colour scheme which made it rather depressing.
Review 139:The food was good and the dining room staff were excellent
Review 140:The hotel has seen better days. The staff are helpful but not the most experienced.
Review 141:Location is the main attraction. Its good if you are an older couple.
Review 142:Couldn't smoke on balcony.
Review 143:I liked the location and friendly staff. The room was laid out nice and the bed was comfy.clean over all, ample Parking, great views and good selection at breakfast.
