Reviews for St James Hotel
Review 1:We've stayed a few times now and enjoyed, but this time we could hear the next room very loudly, laughing and conversation. The soundproofing, if there is any, was very poor. Had a dreadful nights sleep as I got so wound up.
Review 2:Conveniently located for everything nottingham city has to offer. Nice foyer and bar.
Review 3:This was the hotel we picked for people attending our works party to stay and everyone said everything was perfect - staff, rooms, food, the lot. I understand the hotel has been refurbished and has new owners - and they have made a great job of it.
Review 4:The room was quite small and a little tired. The waiting staff at breakfast stood around chatting and were not very attentive.
Review 5:The decor was stunning in the public areas.
Review 6:Our opinion went down very quickly as soon as we walked through the corridors which did not improve when we entered our room.the room was very dated, small and dirty in the bathroom.we were woken up in the middle if the night with screaming and arguing from the room next door.I mentioned this to reception but they weren't interested.
Review 7:First impressions were great the downstairs was decorated beautifully.
Review 8:No lift to our top floor as out of order so had to walk flight of steps (with cases). Might have understood if hotel was not empty but there were floors of unoccupied bedrooms. Reception staff unsympathetic to issue only offering for cases to be carried. Don't they realise it will cause negative feedback? No fridge.
Review 9:Superb location. Very comfortable beds. Great night sleep. Good breakfast choice and lovely serving staff. Ability to open window in room.
Review 10:Decor was very nice didn't have a basic hotel feel , loved the wall paper and also happy that staff gave us two cold bottles of water at midnight as all the shops were closed and I totally forgot and was very thirsty, thank you. Also the hotel was spotless , enjoyed my stay :)
Review 11:Great location and ambiance in a quiet street adjacent to Maid Marian Way. Perfect setting for historical district sightseeing and shopping. Hotel staff accommodated a request for a fold out couch bed, which allowed our 13 year old daughter to sleep in the same room. Great bar/ lounge area for relaxing and meeting up.
Review 12:I was only staying for one night as a place to sleep after a function but would say if you were staying any longer the room was very small. One problem with the room - whoever designed the toilet and washbasin arrangement needs sacking, it was impossible for the toilet seat to stay up as it clashed with the side of the vanity unit - very strange.
Review 13:Hotel was really convenient for city centre, particulary liked the cooked breakfast which was one of the best I have tasted in hotel buffet style arrangement
Review 14:Decor upstairs not as good as downstairs - it felt a bit like they had run out of money and thought 'if we paint stuff in bold colors we can call it boutique'....but painting a 1970s interior aubergine does not a boutique hotel make. Very dark in room.
Review 15:Good value hotel. Comfortable room/bed. Big choice at breakfast. Trying hard to be a good hotel but tacky in places.
Review 16:Room was small and the walls seemed thin ; I could hear the bloke next door shutting his door etc ; sounded like he was in our room!...He wasnt
Review 17:Fantastic location and the breakfast was good the room was a bit small and the walls a little thin but I think you would take this into account for the overall price.I'd stay again.
Review 18:The entrance hall echoes, and staff need to be reminded of the loudness of their voices when on the phone or dealing direct with customers
Review 19:Staff were very obliging, and Vanessa helped me source a Gideons Bible as there was not one in our room, unfortunately Excellent breakfast
Review 20:Our room was incredibly small. On one side of the bed there was no room for a bedside table and the dressing table was incredibly close to the end of the bed. The bathroom was the smallest we have ever had. If one of us was on the toilet with the door closed, you could not get in. The toilet seat wouldn't stay up because the sink overhung the toilet. I think they use booking.com to get rid of the small rooms.
Review 21:The location was perfect.
Review 22:Only small things but our room was smaller than what we thought and the mirrors in the rooms are not very big.
Review 23:The hotel is modern and close to where we needed to be.
Review 24:The TV screen was too small.
Review 25:Location is great, very near shops, restaurants, castle. It has a multi-storey car park next door. Rooms are well equipped and nicely decorated. Breakfast buffet was excellent.
Review 26:Morning staff were great. some of the staff were a bit rude/ cocky. Breakfast had run out of beans and was told it would be at least 5 minutes. I'd finished by then.
Review 27:Location. Hot shower. Comfortable bed
Review 28:Went for a Christmas party in their venue, setting was lovely but food wasn't the best and portions were on the small side, when enquiring for extra rolls for soup dish, non allowed, when asking for more veg for vegetarian meal, non allowed. Meal came with mash and Brussels, the Christmas chicken meal came with roast potatoes, Brussels, carrots, parsnips, why didn't the same veg come on vegetarian meal????
Review 29:Hotel has very nice decor, very comfortable bed, pleasant staff, very helpful. Breakfast was excellent and could have as much as you wanted
Review 30:The room was freezing. Every time another door closed from outside of the room, the door would rattle. Not enough blankets
Review 31:Staff on reception were lovely
Review 32:Expensive parking, but to be expected.
Review 33:Great city centre location right next to the castle. Plenty of good places to eat nearby. Really good breakfast.
Review 34:Room was very pokey but clean, bed comfortable. Breakfast was plentiful but unfortunately hot food was cold and not a good standard. Overpriced.
Review 35:Pleasant staff. Ideal location central to the city. Easy parking.
Review 36:This hotel was very clean, very very close to the center of town just in the perfect locacation. Literally two mins walk from town center. Great room service and reception and bar staff was lovely. And the cocktails where amazing!
Review 37:The room was coo,and crafty from the windows, there was external loud music until 5am, which should have complained about at the time, but did not, the door way for use with a wheelchair was limited, we were unable to change to a larger room, did not spoil the experience. It is a pity that more is not made of the restaurant for evening meals.
Review 38:The convince of the hotel to car parking and central to city centre and facilities and amenities.
Review 39:Cramped small room but good enough for one overnight stay, bed seemed very tired as mattress very soft and quilt only just covered mattress. Not enough light in room especially over bathroom mirror as room painted in dark colours. Lift and corridors also painted in very dark sombre colours, not at all attractive or welcoming.
Review 40:hotel was easy to find in central Nottingham, Ncp car park next to hotel was very useful. check in and out very quick and efficient, quiet room, good breakfast.
Review 41:The hotel is hard to find. Early morning call on second day was overlooked.
Review 42:Very convenient to get into the City centre for the shops, restaurants and bars. Room was comfortable but slightly cramped. Good spacious bathroom. Kettle etc in room. Cleaning staff were really friendly. The Castle is round the corner.
Review 43:We have stayed here at least three times in last 18 months, its close enough to town without the noise of the clubs n pubs. Would recommend staying here at the time of the Christmas markets as they just put you in the xmas mood. The foods excellent and the staff are very polite and pleasant and cant do enough for you.
Review 44:The manager needs to visit the rooms, on going into the bathroom the door didn't shut, one of the light bulbs had blown, the extractor didn't work, and the towel rail wasn't working and couldn't be switched on. All small things easy to fix and if the rooms were regularly checked would be rectified
Review 45:The hotel looks good and the breakfast was very nice
Review 46:Just need to pretend your sitting in the bath in each room and then you'll see under sink which was in need of a clean
Review 47:Excellent location great room fantastic little touches! great decor and very comfortable breakfast good
Review 48:Only niggle just one lif due to maintenence
Review 49:The ambience was great staff went out of their way to be helpful room good all in all brilliant hotel ,superb location ,with close by parking and a great price .will recommend to friends and family ,will stay again
Review 50:Nothing to do with hotel but the man in the next bedroom was talking on his phone all night too loudly!
Review 51:The breakfast was delicious. The cost was so good as we were on a budget, but it felt like 4 star .
Review 52:The restaurant was cold in the evening
Review 53:The rooms had good extras like The White Company toiletries and sleep spray. The staff were lovely, especially at breakfast. Excellent breakfast.
Review 54:Small room and not a city view as advertised. The room was on a lower floor with a generator running outside the window somewhere all night. Not for light sleepers. No hot water for first night and shower fixture was broken. Not as comfortable as on previous visits.
Review 55:Great location. Within walking distance of city centre, theatres, sports grounds (a bit further) etc. Nice area with plenty of pubs and restaurants. Rooms were clean and had tea and coffee facilities
Review 56:Hotel does have Car Park attached operated by" Ringo" andit is cheaper to pay this in Hotel as oppsed to on line
Review 57:Easy to find, easy check in, good value
Review 58:The toilet seat cover wouldn't stay up so I removed it for my stay. (Replaced it before leaving)
Review 59:I stayed in what was described as a 'crash pad'. It had a double bed, dressing table and chair, space for a suitcase wardrobe and ensuite bathroom with a bath. The 'white company' toiletries were a lovely touch and had a well stocked tea/coffee tray with s kettle. The location was excellent and I walked everywhere. Right next to the castle and town centre. Lots of little places to eat on the doorstop too.
Review 60:Glass shower guard wasn't fitted properly. Overfow/plug holder in the bath fell off. Lighting in bathroom not so good. High level opening window flew open to fully wide. Not adjustable and not easily accessible. Room was 418.
Review 61:Our room was OK but not great. My brother was given a better room. Breakfast was good.
Review 62:You have to pay extra for the car park. Small rooms. Good choice for breakfast but food is only lukewarm
Review 63:It is very close to the city centre and it does have a car park.
Review 64:Boutique type hotel but standard room was average; Mixer tap shower and toilet handle flush was really noisy. Rooms were not that well insulated, could hear the other residents in the bathroom above
Review 65:Location just a walk away from the main shops and entertainment with a few quality bars and restaurants in the vicinity. Paid extra for the breakfast but it was well presented and catered for all tastes
Review 66:Beds are very firm, feather duvets would be better than thin flat synthetic ones. The door to the bedroom rattled every time someone came through the main entrance door to the floor, this woke me up at least 4 times during the night.
Review 67:Loved the location and the innovative design and style of the hotel. The layout of the reception and bar had a wow factor but we're very welcoming too.
Review 68:When we arrived I was told there was a problem the room I booked was not available as there was a water leak from the rooms above that had penetrated the room that's was assigned for me. I had booked a deluxe room with a double bed and was given a very tiny room with double bed. Also when we arrived I asked the duty manager for a menu for restaurant whic he handed me and told me I could go in and order. However when we went in they notified us that they had an issue with the chef and there are no hot meals so we had to settle for a salad and a sandwich for dinner. The manager could have easily let us know so we could have decided on other options. Then after our sandwich dinner u went to my room my key did not work so I went to front desk to get a new key there was no one there I waited for 10 mins until the waitress I mentioned before asked me what the problem was I let her know she tried her best to resolve however she could not programme key which was no fault of hers. The manager that checked me in then came back and said he had to deal with a matter outside however he was smelling heavily of cigerettes from his breath so I assume he went for a smoke break. I had then notified him of my complaints and I said I would be complaining which he then answered if I want to complain I have to tell him as he is the night manager which I answered I will complain through another channel and he would be made aware. To top it all off when I went back to my room the shower was like using a watering can hardly no pressure and the temp controller seemed not to work as the temperature stayed luke warm to cold at most times. By this time I was done with my complaints. All of the above highly unacceptable for any paying customer or a frequent hotel user as I am.
Review 69:One of the staff in the bar / restaurant went above and beyond to make sure we was ok considering the mishaps we had on arrival. She was from Romania and I do believe her name was alana however I could be wrong dark hair she had and wore glasses. Excellent person and people skills.
Review 70:Disappointing compared to pictures. Feels quite dated in places, bedroom appears tired and need of freshening up,particularly the bathroom where black mould is visible on bath surround and shower screen. On booking in my card was swiped and £100 blocked when room only £80.half an hour later I paid my half as sharing with a friend. This was taken on top of the £100 that had been blocked and still waiting for it to be credited to my account.
Review 71:Location very close to town.
Review 72:The tea & coffee facilities in the rooms was a little basic . There was only 4 coffee sachets and 4 milk etc which for a double room for 2 people really only meant 1 drink each because you needed 2 of each to make a coffee .
Review 73:The friendliness of the staff and the location is ideal xx The decor of the hotel is amazing and the breakfast was beautifully cooked and well presented .
Review 74:Initial issues with room view (Booking.com said it had a City view, but we had a Car Park view) and half consumed bottle of complementary water were dealt with in an excellent manner. Upgrade to beautiful Penthouse suite greatfully accepted. Lack of heating a slight issue, but again this was dealt with swiftly despite the fact it was a Saturday evening. And final 25% reduction to bill again was much appreciated, your staff were all excellent.
Review 75:Although dinner was delicious, I would have appreciated the offer of a simple option like a steak and salad?
Review 76:The food in the evening was delicious. The bedroom was very clean and the bed very comfortable.
Review 77:Distinctive (as in weird) and tired decor; staff apathetic; very few tables for breakfast so ended up eating in a lounge sofa at a coffee table
Review 78:Convenient location
Review 79:Nothing (and I'm picky)
Review 80:Well refurbished, thoughtfully upgraded, room perfectly comfortable with no shabbiness whatsoever. Very clean and cosy, but also stylish and contemporary.Delightful.
Review 81:All good
Review 82:Superb location right next to the Castle. Nice little and thoughtful touches in the room. Very comfortable and quiet. Superb breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Evening bar live music excellent .
Review 83:Could do with hotel telling you how to get out of the ncp carpark,a little confusing
Review 84:Location great for Nottingham rock city and shopping.car park ncp next to hotel
Review 85:Nothing bad about this hotel
Review 86:Everything location clean friendly staff near to everything value for money very good at everything top class for the price
Review 87:Only bad thing was the windows in our room. They were very far back on the window sill but not a major issue
Review 88:Good location, staff very friendly especially during breakfast which was also good value for money. Not too close to the city centre that you got a lot of noise but only a 2 minute walk down the road. The rooms were basis but nice and clean
Review 89:I asked for a small room. It was tiny; I could barely move around it. Serves me right, I guess.
Review 90:staff at the desk were wonderful -- helpful, friendly, etc. Breakfast were excellent
Review 91:Amazing decor, plenty of choice for breakfast, great service and friendly helpful staff. Had everything I needed. Bed was really comfy. Quiet and close walk to the castle, pubs and town centre. Free wifi was useful too!
Review 92:Only a little thing, but some of the finishes in the room were not quite finished and there was no information in the room on the hotel or surrounding area.
Review 93:It was in a lovely location and the staff were very friendly. Spacious rooms, and free car parking
Review 94:Outstanding location close to bus and rail stations, clean and comfortable accommodations, excellent service, the bar and lounge were also very pleasant and the food for breakfast and evening service was also very good.
Review 95:Two false alarms with the fire alarm system. No instructions what to do when alarm went off. No fire marshals to provide advice. Could be very dangerous if it were the real thing.
Review 96:Beautifully decorated, clean, great location, parking facilities.
Review 97:Chap at breakfast made us feel we were intruding by asking for coffee. By the time we got it we had finished breakfast, then he never bothered to bring sugar, had to go ask for it myself. Bed under window in room, very draughty.
Review 98:Staff on reception lovely, barman on the night we got there great, very friendly.
Review 99:We were on floor 4 and it felt very creepy. It was blue and silver splatter. Felt very dated. Not a good colour combination. Seemed very sterile like you were going in for surgery.
Review 100:The decor was interesting and unique. Front desk personnel stated that each floor was different and each room too.
Review 101:Had a little difficulty parking our jeep in the ncp car park as we were advised all the hotels private spaces were taken. We did however return to the reception area a few minutes after being told this and witnessed a returning guest being issued with a parking permit to use one of these spaces. Who knows maybe we will be offered one next time we stay...
Review 102:We stayed in the four poster room and loved everything about our stay. The room was beautiful and we enjoyed the facilities available there. The bar was lovely for our late night drinks and the breakfast was outstanding. The hotels staff were polite and very helpful indeed. We would definitely use the hotel again.
Review 103:Two fire alarms due to someone's hair straighteners apparently on Fri night and Sat morning were a bit disruptive.
Review 104:Very comfortable and quiet overnight which was great for a city centre hotel.
Review 105:The rooms are very small, bed an pillows very hard.. Woken in night by loud guests. Terrible nights sleep...
Review 106:The location perfect, helpful staff and nice bar area. Nice room service.
Review 107:on arrival, when signing in, I found that I now had grey paint all over my hands, the counter had been just painted, I came up for a wedding, it was a very good job that paint was not on my clothes, just had to spend 10 mins scrubbing the paint off my hands
Review 108:I has asked for a room to be ready at 12 via several e mails, due to a wedding I was attending at 1pm, after some confusion (2pm check in) the room was available
Review 109:As per above
Review 110:I stayed with my Daughter as part of a University visit for one evening. The room was clean and tidy, check in was quick and straightforward. We did not make use of any of the hotel facilities as we needed to be elsewhere. Two adverse comments are. The single beds in our twin room were the tiniest single beds I've slept in, I am not quite 6 foot but I hung out of the end of the bed, and the shower head on the bath was particularly puny. There appeared to be a problem with the fire alarm whilst we were there and a little confusion as to what to do.
Review 111:The location was perfect away from any noise from nightlife but close enough that you could walk to be in the city center within minutes! Perfect place to sleep!
Review 112:Bedroom carpet could have done with a clean. Breakfast was just luke warm although a good choice available. Couldn't get the WiFi to work.
Review 113:Fabulous location in the historic centre of Nottingham.
Review 114:Very noisy outside until about 3 am
Review 115:Overpriced for a good 3 star. Dusty dinning room. Rubbish lift and bathroom tired Staff very good. Bit still overpriced
Review 116:the tv was very small, needs bigger screens. Haven't seen a tv that small for a long time.
Review 117:Very close to the town centre, an easy walk to buses, trams and shops etc.
Review 118:The noise during the night was terrible similar to a vehicle running outside the window spoiling this otherwise good stay - it eventually calmed down about 6 am - this was not good. Upon checkout I was advised it was the hotel pipes sounding like the engine - but it was disappointing given the cost the noise level was so loud. Other people must have complained who have used the room in the past!
Review 119:We spoke to various staff members and they were all equally friendly.
Review 120:The shower head in room 509 was not adjustable and wasn't an easy experience
Review 121:Location to centre of Nottingham. Layout of hotel good. Food and drink very good. Staff were very attentive
Review 122:Room 105 was small and looked onto the multi storey car park not good for us
Review 123:The Bar and Reception and seating areas excellent Bar staff knowledgeable and friendly Breakfast good
Review 124:My only suggestion for them is to do something about the doors in the hallway. You get off the lift and have to open a (fire?) door to get into the hallway with the rooms. This door closes by itself and is kind of loud. I told staff they should have maintenance add a felt liner to the inside door frame to cut down on the noise. I'm a night owl who went to bed at 1 am or later each night. If someone was near the elevator and went to bed early it could be an issue. Not enough to detract anything from their score. I would DEFINITELY recommend.
Review 125:Everything about my 6 day stay was great. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The location is amazing - one block from the entrance to Nottingham Castle, across the street from a casino, and less than 5 minute walk to the center of town. Bed was very comfortable, shower had great water pressure. Oh and the free wifi worked like a charm and was high speed.
Review 126:Long queues to check out. If I had known I would have paid when I checked in or taken the option of fast check out. A little bit noisy on the first floor from the bar below. Taps in my room need some attention.
Review 127:Just outside centre but easy to find. I stayed in a capsule room for one. Bed was a good size and it was ideal for a couple of nights. Nicely decorated and an iron and board in the room. I liked the water and biscuits provided and the sleep spray. Nice toiletries too.
Review 128:Ideally placed, value for money. The room I stayed in was called a "crash pad" and was very small and compact. It was ideal for me to crash out in.
Review 129:Nothing bad but website said city view,we actually overlooked offices so had to keep the curtains shut because they were looking straight in all the time. Don't expect to get that for the £126 paid
Review 130:Staff were excellent, breakfast was lovely and great value for money
Review 131:Beds were so small. Room was small and very noisy, even our door rattled with banging in the corridors. Room service included mouldy salad and me going to restaurant as no phones working for 4 days. Very disappointing for the price.
Review 132:Location was good
Review 133:Rooms a bit on small size.
Review 134:The St James is classy. The foyer, the lifts, the dining room where luxury. Our room was small but we still had a lovely room for low cost. We walked to all tourist attractions and I loved Nottingham overall. The parking was 8 pounds but that is fine as we parked basically on site of hotel. Getting to the hotel is a bit tricky but a good app on the iPad got us there. The bonus was the free breakfast. Amazing variety and they even had gluten free bread on request. Decore, service, location and value for money.
Review 135:Minor issues, shower temperature fluctuated and husband kept banging his head trying to get a better view out of the window, no signage to warn you of the potential hazard.
Review 136:Mostly everything.
Review 137:Breakfast was extremely poor. No glasses for the fruit juices. No Breakfast plates and actually no food when we arrived, and guests were waiting for more to be brought out. Insufficient seating and we had to ask for a table to be cleared and set. We also had to ask for tea and coffee to be brought. Staff did not seem at all motivated or bothered. A number of people actually ate their breakfast seated on the sofas and coffee tables which lined the bar area. We were refunded the price of our breakfast. The hotel room was extremely warm and stuffy even though we had the window open. The toilet lid would not stay up as the sink was in the way, and you had to hold onto the top when flushing as it seemed to lift.
Review 138:Although the décor might be a little dark for some peoples tastes I liked the layout of the hotel and rooms. The reception staff were friendly and professional
