Reviews for Fermain Valley Hotel

Review 1:The staff were friendly and very helpful and the food was excellent. So good in fact that I will be going back later in the year with my wife for a few days holiday.

Review 2:Staff were outstanding, hotel was spotless and well maintained, location was stunning, food was excellent and perfectly presented. Will certainly return with family in the summer.

Review 3:I booked the cheapest room advertised. There was no mention at the point of sale that it was in an annexe, a steep climb from the main hotel. This was made clear after booking by an eMail from the hotel; but not having stayed before it is difficult to construct an accurate impression of the annexe and the nature of the hill between it and the hotel in advance (I tried and failed by looking on the hotel website). It is steep and as someone with heart disease it probably wasn't the best option for me carrying a case! I arrived after dark and realised in the morning that it was possible to drive between the hotel and the annexe - but this was not explained or suggested. Also, having advised that I was arriving by boat with a car it would have been intelligent of someone to advise in advance that the main road from the port to the hotel was blocked by roadworks and a complex diversion was necessary. This incurred a further delay to an already delayed journey (bad weather). Overall, a very functional 4 star hotel but lacking heart and soul, in my judgement. Thucydidies, some 400 years BC, recognised that it is 'people that make a city not walls'. The 'walls' of this hotel are good (except from a wonky staircase) but attention needs to be made to the 'people'. Maybe this is the nature of 4 star hotels in general and if so my preference for future bookings would be for a 3 star hotel with more humanity.

Review 4:Very well equipped hotel with everything one could want in the room and an excellent breakfast. Good value for money.

Review 5:Lovely hotel with great staff. Extremely friendly and helpful and we felt very relaxed and "at home". We had a superb room. Good food. My second stay and I now wouldn't choose to stay anywhere else in Guernsey.

Review 6:Beautiful setting. Lovely pool. Staff brilliant. Dinner at Ocean Restaurant outstanding. Brilliant Chef. Amazing selection of steaks in the steak restaurant. Complimentary taxi service to local restaurant on New Year Eve and pick up and return to hotel afterward.

Review 7:Food was good but needs to improve to get fantastic sausage at breakfast not cooked properly and bacon soggy and fatty otherwise good quality

Review 8:Fantastic hotel lovely see views from gold rooms

Review 9:Welcoming helpful staff, excellent food and great room - thank you. The superior rooms are a short uphill walk and a little distance from reception, but this was fairly communicated in advance so no complaint there.

Review 10:From the friendly staff to the excellent food nothing was too much trouble. We upgraded to a suite and were not disappointed, We had both breakfast and evening meals in the Ocean Restaurant including seafood and steak excellently cooked presented and served at out table.

Review 11:I would say that the say was a little pricey for out of season stay. We stayed the previous night at another location and would suggest pricing could be closer to £100 per night for a December stay.

Review 12:We loved the balcony location, with only a short walk down to the beach.Breakfast was absolutely excellent !

Review 13:We stayed at the Venue building in the hotel. This has a steep hill's walk through a garden to the main hotel building. Just lucky the weather was ok and not raining. The lighting in the garden could have been better in the night.

Review 14:Food was good in the restaurant, quality of the bedroom was excellent.

Review 15:Absolutely nothing.

Review 16:Staff were extremely professional and thorough in terms of answering questions, giving tourist info etc. They gave you so much confidence that everything was to the highest standard that you can really just relax! Location was excellent, the 2 restaurants + tea room were very convenient but also both very good. We are normally people who are easily disappointed in hotels and restaurants, but not at Fermain. The lovely gardens, swimming pool, sauna and all the extras in the rooms were a big plus.

Review 17:Gorgeous location with amazing views. The accommodation and the good were excellent as well as the facilities and the staffs willingness to help!! Already booked again .. !!

Review 18:Everything about our stay was great the courtesy bus and driver were fantastic as were all the staff they couldn't be more helpful. A group of us had dinner in the Ocean restaurant and it was delicious. We will return :)

Review 19:My room, 46, was above a venue. On the Friday night there was a concert there and my room just above it. The noise was horrendous and vibrated though the floor. The manager offered to move me but to a room where the noise could still be heard. Very poor for a hotel positioned as it is.

Review 20:Friendly staff especially shuttle driver. Nicely decorated rooms.

Review 21:Be nice to have a little gym given there is a pool and sauna. Lack of insulation to the cinema room is a downside for residents near to the cinema room. Could do with greater vegetarian options - but what was on offer was of good quality

Review 22:Friendly welcome and a complimentary welcome drink on arrival. Great to have a cinema on site. Chocolates, free water and free sherry in the room - lovely !

Review 23:The bed, though looked lovely, wasn't that comfortable.

Review 24:We booked a gold room with balcony. Such a beautiful view of Fermain Bay. All staff were very attentitive.

Review 25:Very disappointing food with a menu that didn't change in 4 nights. With a top class chef this place would become an island focal point every night of the week.

Review 26:Beautiful location and excellent, helpful staff.

Review 27:From the moment we checked in we were made to feel very special....excellent facilities(they have their own cinema!) and simply amazing food in the 'Rock Garden' where the Barman will entertain you all night with his cocktail flair!

Review 28:Fantastic accommodation, platinum suite with sea view. Friendly helpful staff. Manger kindly gave us champagne and Rose petal room service free on hearing it was our Silver Wed ann treat. Food in Ocean restaurant fabulous. Hotel opporate a shuttle bus service that will take and collect you from Airport and into town. Emailed a head of trip to arrange collection from Airport. Nothing too much trouble.Have a beautiful tea room with fantastic cakes. Will stay again.

Review 29:A slight criticism, although didn't ruin our experience at all, was that there didn't seem to be a restaurant manager in Ocean restaurant for our evening meal, and so the staff were a bit stressed and out of control.

Review 30:Just loved the relaxation in a pretty environment. Both my wife and I have stressful jobs, so a complete escape to this hotel was just what we needed. Great food, nice cocktails, and nice cliff path walks and scenery...

Review 31:Everything was great. It was a bit pricey but would do it again.

Review 32:Fabulous staff and lovely hotel. They missed our breakfast order but more than made up for it when we called reception to query it, and turned up with 4 little cakes as an apology, a lovely way to start my boyfriends birthday

Review 33:Lovely position very well organised and run hotel. Food was excellent as are the facilities with good choices available. Easy access to St Peter Port with hotel providing drop off when required.

Review 34:Not a bad experience, but we felt the restaurant was overpriced, andfish I had overcooked, and rather dry. We had been pressurised to bookour table by email, but the room was less than one third full when weate there.

Review 35:Nice room, but nowhere near the size pictured as Gold Room on theirwebsite. Good toiletries in bathroom, comfy bed. Very good breakfast.

Review 36:Some rooms are in a separate building called "The Venue". This is apt to be noisy - it is on a main road opposite a noisy pub, and is 'the venue' for hotel parties. Swimming pool very cold, and Sauna generally not switched on.

Review 37:Beautiful gardens & views. Excellent staff. 2 good restaurants. Main building very pleasant. Management helpful and reasonable in resolving a grievance.

Review 38:Booking.com didn't make it clear that our room would be above a cinema in the other building. As a result very noisy until late. Staff at Fermain were apologetic!

Review 39:Location and the breakfast

Review 40:Beware of ferry issues getting there and back !

Review 41:Hotel upgrades since our last stay were excellent . Rooms spacious , well equipped and very clean. Several choices of on-site eateries - appealing to a variety of tastes. breakfasts had a wide choice . Staff courteous and helpful , very friendly atmosphere.

Review 42:Everything - from arriving and being offered a complimentary drink with a smile. In our room we found fresh fruit, twice the amount of water usually provided, which also applied to the milk, tea and coffee. A decanter of sherry was a great touch and tasted very nice! Everyone was very pleasant and helpful and you actually felt welcomed. There was also offered a complimentary car down to St Peter Port or the Airport, if booked. The gardens are stunning if not on a bit of a hill. We were in the annexe at the rear, which was fine, but next time, I think we would like to book a Gold room with a balcony. Very pleasant experience and a hotel we would return to.

Review 43:I didnt like that Booking.com charged me for 5% vat tax on my bookingwhen no such tax exists in Guernsey .By my reckoning they should pay meback the extra money I was charged and they should investigate theirprocedure as this is not honest.

Review 44:I liked everything the position the quality and the staff it is in myview the very best place to stay in Guernsey.

Review 45:Hotel staff were very polite and helpful. The rooms were lovely and comfortable and location really good. Excellent value for money and will definitely go back!

Review 46:The breakfasts were very poor. On the final day we ordered their plain omelette and asked for a spoonful of cheese. We were told they were too busy, we ordered extra toast instead, it never arrived. I didn't complain on leaving as there were people waiting to book in. However, I did send an email, I only wanted a response. they havn't replied. Not good enough for £230 per night, such a shame that was our lasting memory of anotherwise lovely hotel.

Review 47:A beautiful hotel, lovely location and on the whole helpful staff.

Review 48:Long wait for dinner on our first night.40 minutes before they acknowledged we were even in the room. Had to complain. Did not dine there again! Went in to St Peter Port instead.

Review 49:Location, peaceful and unhurried. Friendly staff. Shuttle bus was brilliant

Review 50:The hotel was excellent and the staff extremely helpful and friendly nothing was too much trouble. There was free wifi and guests could book drivers to take them to the centre, hotel, airport etc free of charge. The food was excellent and would cater for any food requirements.

Review 51:Some staff are not friendly. This seemed to be a problem particularly with the breakfast waiting staff in the restaurant . As mentioned previously breakfast was good, but my husband was charged for having a cappuccino, rather than just coffee or tea. This seemed a bit mean,as we paid £210 per night for our room. It would have been useful if we could have been warned before arriving, that the Rock Garden restaurant is very popular, so we could have booked. We were only able to have a drink in there, not a meal, as it was booked up.

Review 52:We loved our room, the view from the balcony, the breakfast, the Rock Garden restaurant and the complimentary water left in our fridge everyday. The reception staff and the cleaners were all efficient, courteous and amiable. The bar staff, particularly Ben, in the Rock Garden restaurant were very chatty and welcoming.

Review 53:Our room with a balcony view which was sunny most of the day was marvelous. Everyone was very welcoming. Enjoyed the arrival sherry after a the long journey.

Review 54:The staff were very willing and extremely helpful. The hotel and venue were ideal for the intimate family wedding that I was attending and resulted in the perfect day and overnight stay.

Review 55:Did not expect to be in a separate building called garden rooms, The loud noise from a wedding party. Lack of variety on the menu's.

Review 56:The friendliness of the staff and the cleanliness of the hotel The fantastic gardens The walk down to the beach.

Review 57:The system they use for coffee at breakfast is very hit and miss. Why not have a pot of coffee like they do with the tea.small problem but crucial.

Review 58:Lovely hotel and very good setting.

Review 59:The location is stunning. Easy to walk in to the town or there is a free driver available to drop you off, this is a very nice touch. The staff are fantastic and the food is amazing. The Rock Garden restaurant offered the best steak I've had in years, if not ever. Superb all round. Loved it and will return. Dan the Ops Manager was great and really friendly. The rest of the staff were just as lovely. Top place. They have got it just right.

Review 60:Scrambled eggs needed to be a bit warmer, only complaint, everything else was perfect

Review 61:Staff very friendly and helpful Location good found the steakhouse last couple of days and liked the lively atmosphere

Review 62:Our only reservation would be that we were in a separate building and after an evening meal was quite a steep climb back to our room, we would recommend that a room in the main hotel would be preferable.

Review 63:The staff were all extremely helpful, our driver, reception staff, housekeeping and especially the restaurant manager Karol in the Ocean Restaurants. We had a most amazing, relaxed stay and hope to visit again.

Review 64:Asked for a. Shower but couldn't have that and balcony. Difficult decision but opted for balcony. Mentioned that I was disabled when I booked.

Review 65:Having said that, the staff made every effort on behalf of our needs and comfort. Wonderful atmosphere in hotel, friendly, helpful, relaxed and informal without erosion of standards!

Review 66:Limited storage space in standard size room. Upgraded room recommended.

Review 67:General ambience of hotel, the setting in a very picturesque valley and staff friendly attitude were all excellent.

Review 68:Choice of breakfast overall was good, I dont eat cooked food In the morning but my husband found the full breakfast to be generally disappointing. We had room at the front of the hotel and there was frequently a lot of noise in the morning, with cars parked and engines on and people talking very loudly.

Review 69:Loved situation, the complimentary cars were very useful and the general attitude of the staff was extremely helpful and they appeared to genuinely want to help I. Any way they could.

Review 70:Would have liked to open the windows fully, but blind wouldn't allow, as room hot at night. Had to wash up a dirty mug.

Review 71:We thought the staff very helpful & pleasant.

Review 72:Our only comments would be; When we arrived we were told that we would not be staying in the main hotel building, we already knew this, what we didn't know was that was a very steep walk through the hotel gardens to a building called "The Venue" As the name implies it's a purpose built event annex with rooms above a noisey cinema and dance floor area for weddings and other such parties. Our first night (Fri) celebrating our Wedding Anniversary was disturbed by noise from the main entrance and from s party of around 15 girls, smoking and singing directly under our window. I reported this the following morning and was told that no other rooms were available to be moved to, upon further questioning I found out that another event was to be held agin that same night (Sat) imagine our horror! Saturday night was okay, when compared to the previous night, and the rest of the stay was very peaceful, the hotel staff were extremely apologetic but must already have been aware of noise issues from other events held there! Guests should be made aware of the location before being sold rooms in that building. If you are a member of a wedding, or other path using the building you probably wouldn't mind, but if it's peace that you're hoping for then don't stay in "The Venue" but ask for a room in the main hotel where it would be worth every penny!

Review 73:A very high quality hotel with amazing views. Staff are extremely helpful with very high levels of service and attention to detail. We ate in The Ocean restaurant which served high quality food and the hotel Steak House which serves some of the best steaks that your ever likely to taste (I travel globally so trust me on that comment). We would defiantly return to this hotel!

Review 74:The cooked breakfast the first morning (Saturday) perhaps could have been better but did improve on the Sunday.

Review 75:We had a very comfortable room in the main hotel building overlooking the terrace. Definitely worth paying the extra. We also enjoyed, as part of a group of friends, dinner in the Rock Restaurant on the Friday evening which had a great atmosphere and specialised in steaks. The sherry in our room was a nice touch. Lovely pool area and terrace area to sit and relax.

Review 76:We booked the particular room based on images on the website. The room we actually got has the same view, the same decor and the same furniture but was a third smaller. This was a disappointment.

Review 77:Great location in view of the excellent shuttle service and fantastic bus service on Guernsey. Two good restaurants in the hotel with really nice food. The Rock is open to non residents so book your table early.

Review 78:The hotel was very comfortable & the food in the two restaurants was excellent. We particularly liked the terrace overlooking the valley with a view of the sea in the distance- great for a pre dinner drink or a bar snack.

Review 79:Just a minor point but I thought it would have been nice when we checked out if the receptionist had asked us if we had enjoyed our stay (which we had) or thanked us for our visit etc. Check out felt a bit impersonal.

Review 80:The location is superb and the food excellent (loved the breakfast in particular). The room was very comfortable and had a balcony with a great view down the valley to the sea (Gold Room).

Review 81:The shower was under the eaves so a bit difficult to use as it was very low. It's not possible to stand underneath it but this was just a minor point and didn't detract from our stay at all.

Review 82:We stayed in room 28 with wonderful sea views. Lovely spacious room with very comfortable bed. The lounge area downstairs in the hotel was really peaceful and relaxing and the whole place was beautifully appointed. The food in the restaurant was great also the driver at the hotel who ran us into town or wherever we wanted to go was very pleasant and it was a really good service.

Review 83:Some of the restaurant staff were slow and unenthusiastic but after feedback from several guests, this improved towards the end of our stay.

Review 84:Walking through the Beautiful rock gardens to the main hotel. Stunning views of Fermain Bay. Food in the restaurant was wonderful.

Review 85:Staff were very helpful and informative pointing out where to go and how to make the most of our stay in Guernsey. Hotel was very comfortable and food was of a good quality.

Review 86:We had a platinum room (29) and were disappointed with sea view which was very limited. Also as an elderly couple we would have appreciated a comment that the walk down to the beach was very steep and further than we expected.

Review 87:The staff were most helpful and hotel smart and clean throughout.

Review 88:Food at breakfast and dinner was first rate, but staff need more training on the service side.

Review 89:Room very comfortable and well equipped with lots of nice touches (sherry, fresh fruit). The use of a courtesy car and driver was appreciated. Public rooms were very pleasant to sit in.

Review 90:We did not expect to be woken up before 6 am by staff chattering below our room. Whether or not they were aware of how sound carries at that time, it is something that needs to be addressed.........

Review 91:Wifi, had different location areas and you needed to logon separately to each, no air conditioning, this may be a problem in hot conditions, bathroom in superior bedroom was rather small for the room rate charged. Uphill garden walk to some rooms onsite, this may be difficult to older guests. Didn't use it, but swimming pool a little on the small side.

Review 92:Easy access to airport, ferry port and town centre areas. Choice of food on site, but you need to pre book the restaurants especially the steak house. Housekeeping was to a very high standard, reception and restaurant staff were very helpful and attentive. Ideal location for short breaks.

Review 93:We booked a "Gold" room but the size of room and bathroom was not as per the images so our expectations were not reached. Similarly, when we challenged the desk staff about this we were told that it is a "Gold" room b the photos were taken with a "wide angled lens" which is poppycock or at best deceptive.

Review 94:High standard of cleanliness & decor. The staff were very welcoming and helpful.

Review 95:We stayed at the Fermain hotel for a weekend and it was made so pleasure able by the staff at the hotel. They were all so lovely and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Our room had a sea view and was very comfortable and clean.

Review 96:The Sunday eve service in the Ocean was very, very slow. Three of us gave up on trying to order a sweet for e.g. I had glanced at the website beforehand and was looking forward to a swim, so I was surprised to find that the pool was so small. (Although in such a confined site, I accept it is pretty extraordinary to have one at all.)

Review 97:Close to cliff path and therefore offered a pleasant route into town. Very helpful reception staff.

Review 98:Everything is perfect. There is nothing that I'd want to change and I can't think of a way that this hotel could be improved.

Review 99:The Fermain Valley is an absolutely lovely hotel in a stunning setting. The staff, rooms, facilities, food and overall comfort are of an exemplary standard and if visiting Guernsey again, I would make it an automatic choice. Thank you Fermain Valley - you are an example of a small hotel chain that knows what it's doing and does it supremely well.

Review 100:Nothing

Review 101:Overall standard of staff going out of their way to be helpful to make your stay enjoyable .The location and setting of hotel the transport facillite to town. was excellent and food was a delight

Review 102:The hotel staff were very helpful indeed especially as my plans changed twice during the morning. Excellent meal in The Rock Garden Steakhouse. This hotel will now be my first choice when I have to revisit Guernsey in the coming weeks/months.

Review 103:Everything. The staff were friendly, helpful and always professional . The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Food very good , the breakfast buffet was excellent..

Review 104:We booked a Platinum room for my wife's birthday get-away, and had an absolutely wondeful time. The room was lovely, with little touches like the complimentary decanter of sherry adding something special. Gavin and the other hotel staff all were keen that we enjoyed our stay as much as possible, and for example took time to remember our names and always used them when addressing us - again, reinforces the personal touch this hotel promotes. This personal touch even extended to a bottle of wine and a birthday card left in the room for my wife from the staff when we returned from a day's exploring! We ate in the Ocean restaurant for evening meals (Rock steakhouse was booked for a private event on the night we arrived, and not open the following two...) and each and every meal there was wonderful - both in terms of generous portion size and quality. Gavin was also very helpful prior to our stay, offering to help out with a query with using bank cards locally (conflicting and as it turned out incorrect information from Lloyds bank suggesting we would be charged a forex commission charge for using our cards!) All in all, we had a perfect few days' getaway, couldn't fault the hotel or staff, and will definitely be back! Thank you all very much indeed.

Review 105:Our room set at top which we knew beforehand and to be honest steep incline did us good.

Review 106:Breakfast good selection of hot and cold, friendly staff, small but warm pool with good changing facilities and extras

Review 107:but the female staff in the reception and restaurant were very unfriendly and came across like we were in the way. We will never stay there again. Wi fi was rubbish and we kept having to re connect. Parking was not sufficient and facilities were poor. Broken glass on our dining table for breakfast has not even been cleared from the previous night.

Review 108:The mail staff were friendly

Review 109:The staff were exceptionally helpful. The restaurants in the hotel were excellent. The ability to reserve their cinema facility for your own viewing was a real treat. Nothing was too much trouble - even organising the hotels transport to take you to a restaurant and also collect you.

Review 110:No hot water!! This was not so good - but when we complained the next day the hotel knocked all the drinks off the bill and we're waiting to see if they will knock anything further off.

Review 111:Location, comfort of the room, friendliness of the staff. They were happy to let our little boy join us on the Sunday to use the pool.

Review 112:Nothing, we didn't stay long enough to taste all that the hotel had to offer but what we did use was excellent. Will definitely recommend to friends.

Review 113:Everything, staff polite/helpful. Facilities that we used were superb.

Review 114:We dined at both restaurants which were delicious. Amazing staff, knowledgable and helpful went well beyond what was expected of them. Room was beautiful great bed and facilities. Just a 20min walk down the hill to St Peter Port. Taxis and bus back up.

Review 115:Restaurant is pricey.

Review 116:I have recommended this hotel to family and friends should they ever visit Guernsey. We would certainly use it again, friendly staff clean and tidy good location with a courtesy bus included.

Review 117:There was a big black stain on the carpet, and the wifi connection wasn't great.

Review 118:Lovely views of the sea and cliff, friendly and helpful staff and brilliant breakfast. Also the shower was amazing.

Review 119:The pool was just not warm enough but that's just us so not an overall dislike.

Review 120:Help was excellent during our stay and couldn't of asked for more. Many thanks from us and merry Christmas.

Review 121:Wifi did not reach our room.

Review 122:Absolutely stunning rooms! The hotel was lovely! There was complimentary sherry, bottled water, apples and fudge! It was excelent and our room had fabulous views. The only thing lacking was the wifi did not reach our room, but we did not kind because everything else was perfect.

Review 123:The double bed was two single beds pushed together - this didn't match the luxury of the room. Wouldn't change anything else!

Review 124:The room was beautiful and had a balcony overlooking the valley. Free sherry in the room and dressing gown made it feel more luxurious. Fantastic restaurants on site - great feel and food, were also very well staffed. Great that there was a swimming pool also overlooking the valley and a little sauna. Breakfast was perfect - lots of choice! Lovely hotel with a really nice feel, one of the best I've stayed in and would love to come back!
