Reviews for Duke Of Normandie
Review 1:Nothing.
Review 2:The wonderfully friendly, hard working staff. Spacious, attractive room with a view to the castle. The location was perfect for shopping, restaurants, pubs, and walking (if the weather had been better!).
Review 3:On second night was woke up several times lots of bumping and banging and delivery vehicles reversing very noisy in room 23. Shower in need of resealing mildew in shower cubicle.
Review 4:The location was brilliant. Food very good staff friendly drinks were reasonable.
Review 5:Bathroom could be modernised a little, but it's not an issue - everything works. No aircon, so can't comment on what it would be like in height of summer.
Review 6:Nice Gastro pub attached. Very friendly efficient staff at breakfast.
Review 7:Getting to the hotel is a bit of an adventure - one way system and steep streets.
Review 8:Rooms conveniently located around a courtyard. Hotel itself located right in the middle of town.
Review 9:Very difficult to find if driving. not easy access through arch into car park. Bathroom & fittings could do with a tidy up.
Review 10:Position near to town centre is very convenient, for walking to the front/shops/restaurants. Clean and very comfortable bedroom. Good Breakfast
Review 11:Room bar prices were a little on the high side.
Review 12:Happy helpful staff. Reception was neat and tidy at all times. Quiet location but very close to shops, bars and restaurants.
Review 13:The reception staff do not seem to have a good knowledge of the local area but this is not suprising as they are not from Guernsey.
Review 14:The standard of the rooms and bathrooms is in my view up to Crowne Plaza standard. The food and beverage staff are very good and the frsh cooked braekfast is excellent
Review 15:Was so happy to come back to a clean room. Loved the fact that we could open some windows and still have privacy with the blinds down. The heater was turned on when it got colder without us even asking. The breakfasts were great and served by efficient happy waiters.
Review 16:We liked the location, comfort, friendly and helpful staff and food during our five night stay. We complained of noisy neighbours in the adjacent room and the management immediately transferred us to another part of the hotel without question. The noise was no fault of the hotel and they dealt with the problem expeditiously. Full marks.
Review 17:The walls are very thin and could hear everything next door, especially when they were talking and had the TV on at around 0400 hours! Thought the dining room from claustrophobic as it had no windows. Breakfast served was only warm and coffee very weak.
Review 18:Location in St Peter Port
Review 19:Nothing bad... Slightly steep walk up to the hotel , but that gave in character ..
Review 20:The staff were so becoming and the quality of the room excellent . I would use again if passing through Guernsey on my way to France
Review 21:Hiking up the stairs to the room, no shower in bathroom. Didn't like bath tub in room. And seemed dusty.
Review 22:Very friendly helpfull staff. Good breakfast.
Review 23:Staff were very helpful polite and always professional. My husband and I were late in celebrating our anniversary this year but we had a really lovely break .
Review 24:If you want feather pillows ask before check in as they have to be got from the cleaning crew. A minor niggle!
Review 25:Location is just off the high street. Breakfast is cooked to order and continental has great croissants and local cheese. The attached pub does great food and we can recommend the proper pie and the sea bass. Staff were very helpful and the room we had was comfortable and well appointed. Would stay again.
Review 26:torn carpet, unlevelled floor (about 12 cm height difference from one side of room to the other), high step between room and bathroom level, faucet of wash basin mounted 20 cm outside the basin: this releases running water right at the edge of basin = programmed mess! To place the ceiling light in the shower directly above the rain shower disk contradicts the idea to have light in the shower cabin - who is to blame for such "boutique" design ideas?
Review 27:vicinity to town centre
Review 28:The convenience of location , restauant attached to the hotel was good, great bathroom, bedroom was good just a little cramped breakfast was delicious!
Review 29:Good sized room with sofa, TV , dvd, mini bar Bathroom had powerful shower. Good choice for breakfast with the hot choices served from the kitchen not from a buffet. staff cheerful will say again.
Review 30:I informed reception that the toilet flush needed addressing
Review 31:The bed was very comfortable and shower amazing. The room was very well equipped and lovely.
Review 32:Hotel was down a dead end street and although had directions and stopped and asked locals a few times we kept missing road as did not realise had to go down a road signed as a dead end! Could do with a sign up on corner pointing down street stating Duke Of Normandie xx metres on right
Review 33:All staff friendly from start couldn't do enough for you. We arrived to find we had the room with a bath in the main room and just toilet and sinks in the en suite.( we got the impression this was one of the top rooms it just wasn't to our taste ) Mentioned this to reception in the morning and we were offered a new room and informed it was slightly smaller and darker than room 20 and our luggage moved while we were out for day . Room 16 was of ample size and felt much more comfy having a bath in a bathroom
Review 34:The double bed was actually two single beds which were clearly old or of particularly bad quality so they dipped in the middle of each bed so you couldn't lay in the middle or comfortably role across the bed; you had to sleep in one bed or the other. Not happy to pay extra for a double then end up sleeping in a single. Wifi didn't work properly in my room I had to keep going to reception. I was told the hotel was recently refurbished. This was clearly focused on 'the look' rather than on quality finishes or comfort (the table in my room was particularly unstable). It is not good value. It is essentially a basic hotel yet I paid more to stay here than I did for a 5 stars club suite in The Langham in central London. Yes it is in Guernsey, but last time I checked that makes it part of the UK and therefore subject to some equal considerations of how much you can charge guests for basics. But for those of you who fuss over the Channel Islands and expect the higher rates, as a more equal measure in terms of value; room cost me £5 more than a night in a fabulous room at The Jersey Grand Hotel. I feel like I was overcharged to cover the cost of new wallpaper and throws. I just wish they had thought to buy quality furniture.
Review 35:Well presented hotel with friendly and helpful staff.
Review 36:Nothing really - just the fact that we were upstairs in the Courtyard and struggled with cases up and down.
Review 37:Everything, the hotel was immaculate, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was lovely, and the housekeepers kept the room above standards.
Review 38:The food in the Picked Pig was very good, but for older people there was too much, smaller portions would have been better. and less waste.
Review 39:The room was always maintained well, and all the staff were very helpful.
Review 40:The rooms we had were based around a courtyard car park with a pub seating area. This is noisy for those rooms. This increases at the weekends when more people use the Pickled Pig Pub and then smoke in the car park and leave through it. If you like early nights and a quiet night this is not the place for you.
Review 41:Good location for central St Peter Port giving easy access to to shopping, Restaurants and the Marina. Rooms have all the amenities and are comfortable.
Review 42:Staff are amazing could not be more helpful really go above and beyond any requests asked. The location is great! And the food is superb!! Breakfast & dinner both delicious.
Review 43:Personally, I prefer a less firm bed, otherwise I wake up with back ache, but it wasn't enough to keep me awake in pain as in some places I've stayed at, so I'm quite satisfied. I realise others will like the firm beds.
Review 44:Staff were extremely friendly and always helpful; their joyous attitude during mealtimes was a delight.
Review 45:The young barman needs to make anyone feel welcome. He acted like a sulky teenager!
Review 46:A room that didn't back onto anyone else's. Facilities in the room. Friendly restaurant and desk staff. Great restaurant.
Review 47:I deliberately paid for an executive double to have a more spacious room, what we got was a very average double and no cd/dvd player. I was disappointed also to find the outside sitting area alongside the car park cleverly not shown in the pictures.
Review 48:Convenience to the town and bus station so we could visit other parts of the island.
Review 49:It's a very small complaint but I didn't like having a big TV on at breakfast, muted, with a different radio station on. I would have much preferred just the radio with no TV, as this was distracting. Very minor issue, though
Review 50:The location is fantastic, although there is short but steep hill. The hotel is very comfortable, very clean and we enjoyed the garden area which is a real suntrap. Marvelous food and great staff.
Review 51:The new outside seating area on one side of the new accom modation was quite noisey in the afternoons. The Hotel is situated on an steep slope, and not very suitable for more elderley people to have to get to and from the town centre.
Review 52:All staff very friendly and efficent. Breakfast was good with both cerials and cooked meal if required. New accommodation recently finished was comfortable.
Review 53:A great hotel with friendly and efficient staff. The dining arrangements were just right for excellent food, reasonable prices and easy attitude. The outside drinking and dining experience is in a suntrap and served by friendly staff. Full of atmosphere.
Review 54:Nothing. It wasn't cheap but I believe you very much get what you pay for in Guernsey. The only thing i would say is the wifi wasn't great from the room (we were at the top) but was fine from downstairs. We would definitely stay again.
Review 55:The room was very comfortable with a lovely bathroom and a lovely view down to the sea. The room was generally very quiet. We could hear a little noise from the downstairs beer garden but this had totally stopped by 8pm. The breakfasts was delicious with a good choice. The staff were incredibly helpful and efficient.
Review 56:Room size not over-generous and it's location, tucked up a corner, near the courtyard bar did not provide the "executive" feel.
Review 57:All management and staff were professional, efficient and friendly. 3 minute walk down to the main street. Lovely cooked breakfast. Free car park and free wifi. Restaurant - ate there 3 consecutive evenings.
Review 58:As with all these old buildings, they creak and groan. Avoid a room in the old part. There are motel type rooms which may well be better. Noisy rooms with creaking stairs and ceilings, with thin walls.
Review 59:Breakfast
Review 60:Courtyard room accessible. Would have preferred walk in shower. But can be a bit noisy from other rooms and at expensive end of spectrum.
Review 61:Helpful staff good breakfast and decent bar. Staff helpful and well located if up a bit of a hill.
Review 62:The stairs, we were on the 3rd floor and found them hard by the end of the week. Basin in the bathroom not very well designed.
Review 63:Ambience. Breakfast. Dinner both excellent Position in town
Review 64:The updgarde of the hotel was very good but there were cracks if you looked closely revealing a less than a full renovation
Review 65:Conviently ocated just off the high street solots of eating and drinking possibilities
Review 66:Driving into the car park was quite an experience.
Review 67:The location couldn't be better, the breakfast was excellent and everything about the hotel felt like a four star.
Review 68:Noise from adjoining rooms and hallways a little annoying. I'm being picky here!
Review 69:Very attentive service. Helpful and well run. Great location, food very good and comfortable rooms.
Review 70:No Dinning Room, would have had to eat in Bar? The sign posting of Hotel car park from docks was zero, we got lost and came to hotel down wrong street to your west entrance ,had to reverse back up hill.
Review 71:The room was extremely comfy.
Review 72:Light bulbs kept failing and room (49) was always gloomy which made laptop keyboard difficult to see and use. Choice of evening meals fairly limited and not appetising so always went out each of the 4 nights. Doesn't sell Strongbow cider.
Review 73:Very large and comfortable bed.
Review 74:The hotel is well placed to enjoy all of the benefits of the town centre within walking distance. The food ,dinner and breakfast was delicious, well presented and fair value for money.
Review 75:Our steaks one night were very tough! But on the whole the food was fine. Although we thought was a lack of variety.
Review 76:Proximity to the town and harbour.
Review 77:We didn't have a bad experience but using wifi via a third party put me off using it.
Review 78:Our review is based on the fact we stayed in an executive double room, we did not see any other rooms. The staff really made our stay an enjoyable experience. The level of service really was very high.
Review 79:I had an outside room, walking from the restaurant to the room in the evening was a bit precarious as only minimal lighting outside.
Review 80:Very comfortable bed, friendly staff and excellent location. The evening meal was also very nice.
Review 81:the breakfast area was quite frantic and would have liked to have eaten my food without the tv and radio on at the same time. Poor wifi
Review 82:Breakfast was plentiful, comfortable bed, spacious bathroom (we were moved as first 'de-luxe' room was very small)
Review 83:Nothing really, my stay was great. If you are arriving by car then it is tricky to negotiate the narrow, one way system to find the car park. This worked for me: From College St turn into Ann's Place go down to the bottom and around the little roundabout. Take a left exit up St James St and carry on up until you can turn left into La Rue Marguerite, for a few yards only before bearing left into Lefebvre St. The Duke of Normandie car park entrance will be on your right. Watch out for the one way signs.
Review 84:Fantastic location in the centre of town whilst being in a quiet area. All the staff are extremely helpful and I found the customer service I received from the front desk and the restaurant staff to be faultless. Gluten free bread was provided at breakfast with no bother. The room was well equipped with a large double bed, an iron, ironing board, decent hairdryer, toiletries and dressing gown, TV with numerous channels, DVD player and Internet. I would definitely stay here again when I next visit.
Review 85:Stairs with no lift, ok without bags but a pain with baggage.
Review 86:Big comfortable bed, great breakfast, friendly staff, lovely food and surroundings in The Pickled Pig.
Review 87:Bathroom sink had been fitted wrong way round (it was oblong with sloped sides) which made it impossible to wash hands as tap only just over the edge of it. Badly designed bathroom. Also magnified mirror fitted far too high. No lift!
Review 88:Great for shopping, restaurants and local amenities. Great bed and pillows. Staff wonderful and cleanliness excellent.
Review 89:We had blocked toilet once but it was sorted out in no time, as u would expect.
Review 90:The food was very good, hotel very Smart and yes when we visit Guernsey again we will return to this hotel.
Review 91:This was my first visit to Guernsey and I chose this Hotel on a good recommendation from a friend and I'm so glad I did! The Hotel is a bit tucked away so could be a bit difficult to find at first but in terms of location to all the tourist sites and bars & restaurants it's perfect! The staff were super friendly, best English breakfast I've had in ages and the overall look of the Hotel is lovely as it's just been redone. The hotel's dinner restaurant, The Pickled Pig is definitely worth you trying out as the food is amazing! Lastly the room I stayed in was amazing with beaiutiful views of Castle Cornet and the Marina. I would recommend Room 20 if you're a couple as this is apparently the only room with a view of the castle that you can see from your bath!!! The Duke of Normandie made my stay in Guernsey perfect & I would definitely stay here again!
Review 92:Staff were very impressive...heating malfunction in first room, moved within 15 mins completely, no issues with everything. Pub food on site fantastic, great breakfasts and the Hotel Manager couldn't do enough for us. Staff in bar and dining were friendly and super efficient. Ferry Company caused some hassle with bad weather changes - the hotel took it in their stride. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone.
Review 93:The blinds on the windows - they had to remain completely closed if you didn't want passers-by to see in. The water did tend to get everywhere while showering.
Review 94:The room was nicely decorated. The bar areas were great. The staff were friendly and the location was perfect. Brilliant breakfast.
Review 95:Some of the furniture was scraped and the shower head kept leaking throughout the night.
Review 96:The staff were easy to talk to and very helpful, the breakfast included rivaled that of the premier inns, very nice place, only down bit was the blankets had a few stains on them which didn't look too attractive.
Review 97:Although the location is good it is difficult to find if you are driving. The last few hundred yards could be sign post better..Sat nav does not work in Guernsey..
Review 98:Very Clean...Restaurant was excellent...Very friendly..would definately recommend.
Review 99:The shower in the room was not very well located As it sprayed all over the floor due to the bath room being Small.
Review 100:The staff were Very good Food was very good
Review 101:My only criticism of this lovely hotel was that the door to the room didn't appear to be sound proofed, the hotel was generally quiet but when some other guests arrived back to there room at 1am and we're talking on the landing it was like they were talking in our room we could hear that clearly and they weren't shouting . Still recommend hotel though and would stay again
Review 102:Room- large clean lovely furnishings Location -in the heart of town Staff - happy and helpful
Review 103:The bed wasn't comfortable. The shower wouldn't balance between hot and cold The pub was closed. Radiator was on maximum heat so the room was sweltering when I arrived.
Review 104:Good location Ok for short stay
Review 105:Reception staff were disinterested and unhelpful. Wasn't told about lack of facilities before booking or on arrival by the staff. Was disappointed to find there was no restaurant for an evening meal or hot breakfast facilities. Continental breakfast consisted of a croissant or a muffin which were not very nice at that and had to be eaten in reception!
Review 106:Good location. Nice big rooms, quiet and clean
Review 107:Refurbishment meant no facilities and I was not made aware of this before arrival
Review 108:Bedroom quality good & central location in St Peter Port. Good value for money.
Review 109:No problems at all with this hotel
Review 110:Great location for access to the centre of St Peter Port. Restaurant and bar were undergoing refurbishment so only continental breakfast was on offer when I stayed. I'd definitely stay there again
Review 111:The breakfast was a pretty average continental one as the kitchen was being refurbished. Don't turn right out of the entrance or you can seriously get your car stuck in the tight lane which is a no through road.
Review 112:Most things. Good for town centre shopping / restaurants etc.
Review 113:Unfortunately, during refurbishments (which we knew about) there were no restaurant or bar facilities. Nevertheless, the substitute continental breakfast was totally inadequate. More effort could have been made to provide quality croissants instead of the cellophane wrapped dough on offer. Also, surely a toaster for fresh toast and a choice of cereals and fruit salad would not have been too much to ask. The lack of effort and imagination on what was provided was totally inadequate and unacceptable. Really poor show from an otherwise very good hotel.
Review 114:The Duke is a very comfortable hotel in an excellent central location with free parking in town.
Review 115:Nothing really although broadband reception was a bit patchy
Review 116:A great room (37) with comfortable bed, powerful shower and contemporary fittings and decoration. Spotlessly clean with high quality cotton sheets, duvet cover and towels Friendly and efficient staff
Review 117:Room was a bit cold but put a towel under the door which stopped the draught and it was fine. Only one small radiator in room. It was the coldest night of the year though.
Review 118:Nice modern decor. Comfy bed. Fantastic location close to the centre and the shops. Had dinner at the crows nest overlooking the harbour which was great. Friendly staff. Facilities for leaving our suitcase while we took a stroll on our last day. Nice and quiet. Loved it.
Review 119:Was a little noisy when guests moved around the corridors and in the room above Room was a little too warm for me but luckily could open the window
Review 120:Free WiFi Large room Less than a minute walk from Town High Street Large breakfast selection TV and DVD player in room Friendly and helpful staff Modern look and feel In room safe Bathrobes Toiletries
Review 121:My room was in the courtyard and was a bit noisey in the mornings with other guests who are up earlier and walking around and cars parked directly outside rooms. Breakfast was only ok, bit of a down after a nice evening meal
Review 122:Good location for town centre, shops and restaurants etc. Good food in bar albeit a bit quite but probably due to time of year. Good friendly service from all staff.
Review 123:Cold room and couldn't turn the heating on in the room or the bathroom, the room door didn't open fully and hit the bed when you try to open it. Not very sound proof as you can hear other guess very easily.
Review 124:Easy access to Town and places to eat.
Review 125:The only thing we could criticise was that the bed mattress felt well used and could have been a lot firmer.
Review 126:The staff were all very helpful and pleasant and the food was very good. We also enjoyed the free use of the hotels DVDs which was a bonus in the bad weather.
Review 127:Our Room layout was a bit awkward. But in an old building you can't get perfection. It was a bit chilly in the breakfast room.
Review 128:Staff were great. Location excellent, nicely maintained clean room, breakfast not bad too.
Review 129:Two single beds had been pushed together (not zipped) to make a king size--- so gap in the middle was not comfortable. Also did not specify bath when booking -- ended up with shower which wouldn't have been the end of the world but the size of bathroom was tiny. Room for one person at a time.
Review 130:Location of hotel was excellent with car parking. Bar was adequate for food on one night with reasonable pricing. (Da Nello's following night --expensive but excellent). Room was of a good standard except---see opposite.
Review 131:Breakfast was very rushed!!Had just got our cereals when the main breakfast was served!!No soya milk which was very disappointing.
Review 132:The location of the hotel was excellent.
Review 133:Limited choice of food in bar. Car park entrance a tight squeeze but practice makes perfect.
Review 134:Good welcome. Good breakfast. Very clean. Good central location.
Review 135:Finding the hotel!!! Sat nav was no use, as it couldn't keep up with the spiral of narrow, twisting, one-way and dead-end roads that this hotel is situated in the middle of. Great for town access on foot. Will not be staying here again due to damage caused to hire car as tried reversing up steep one-way lanes that can be mistaken for the road this hotel lies on and very tight turning into small tunnel for carpark.
Review 136:Nice rooms, with up to date and stylish decor. Breakfast was typical for a mid-range hotel. Has a slight motel feel about it, with most room doors opening onto the courtyard car park.
Review 137:Only one set of towels left in the room for two people staying. Small bits and pieces falling off or not working in the bathroom.
Review 138:Very nice room making it more four star than three star.
Review 139:The shower was a bit obstreperous, meting out abitrary punishment and leaving the bathroom awash.
Review 140:Excellent breakfast Comfortable bed Very well equipped for 3 stars Terrific staff Central location
