Reviews for The Old Government House Hotel & Spa

Review 1:Absolutely nothing to dislike.

Review 2:Very comfortable hotel with outstanding staff, quality food served with style. Convenient to town centre, free car parking and free wifi. I could go on but I'm sure that you have heard it all before from this quality establishment.

Review 3:The pool is outdoors so only opens May to September, the classic rooms are small but perfectly formed

Review 4:The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful, lots of stunning public areas to relax and the afternoon tea is great value and delicous

Review 5:The porter showed me to the room, then left me, but I had to carry my bags, and it was the wrong room any way. I then had to move from the first room because the aircon unit just outside my window was noisy and vibrating. The second room was good, and I made sure the porter carried one bag...

Review 6:Excellent food in the main dining room and the service of the staff was very good.

Review 7:It is a pity it is steep walk back up the hill from the shops. The distance is not worth a taxi!

Review 8:The food service and comfort were excellent. Good view over the town.

Review 9:the indian resturanant was not worth the prices charged and would not recommended to other visitors. The food was ok but not worth the money

Review 10:the staff went out of their way to help and nothing was too much a problem. We were on honeymoon and the room was displayed with flowers and a compelmentary bottle of rose champagne was left for us

Review 11:The bedroom was a little crampt due to too much furniture present.

Review 12:Very helpful and friendly staff .Bed particularly comfortable. The hotel was well equipped and presented throughout.Food was first class.

Review 13:The rooms are extremely small for the money. Not big enough to open a suitcase in or even turn around, the furniture takes up all the space.

Review 14:Lovely old hotel. Great staff & service.

Review 15:I would struggle to see this hotel as 5 star, the room we were allocated was cramped to say the least. I have had larger rooms in capital cities, ( paris & London ) Bathroom was well appointed but no room to move, I think a larger person would struggle to be comfortable in these rooms.

Review 16:well appointed rooms, all staff excellent except lady at reception ( most unhelpful ) good location

Review 17:The rooms were smaller than expected. No minibar or fridge. The room service was very irregular having to wait until 3.30 on two days. The sunbed headrests were dirty and greasy. Felt underwhelmed by the whole experience. Would not recommend or return.

Review 18:Superb location, close to harbour and shops. Excellent breakfast.

Review 19:One of those Upmarket hotels which conflate intrusive behaviour with 'attentive service". And woefully poor air conditioning - not even up to the job on autumnal September day with ambient in mid-teens.

Review 20:The staff seemed to mean well.

Review 21:If I had to be picky I could have done with brighter bulbs in the bedside lamps as the overhead lights were too severe if a partner was trying to sleep. Also another lamp on the far side of the room near the seating area would have been useful for reading.

Review 22:The staff were exceptional, efficient, friendly and professional. The accommodation was lovely and very comfortable. A perfect break and I will certainly look out for other hotels in the group.

Review 23:That I had to leave after 3 days

Review 24:Everything! Staff were friendly and genuine, nothing was too much to ask. The management of this hotel have things spot on, I'll be returning and also recommending to my friends and business colleagues.

Review 25:The double rooms, though very comfortable, are on the small side with limited storage if staying for more than a long weekend.

Review 26:This is an excellent hotel, the only 5* hotel on Guernsey. The service and staff are excellent too, one of the best breakfasts ever. Though central, it is on a hill so may be a challenge for those with difficulties with walking.

Review 27:A first-class hotel with an extremely high level of service delivered by very friendly staff. Great location for looking round St Peter Port and a perfect spot for a short break or long week-end.

Review 28:Nothing.

Review 29:The attention to detail from all of the staff and the way they made you feel that you were importanat to them. the quality of the food. the character of the hotel and its decor.

Review 30:Wifi was intermitterent in activity. The street below our room was a little noisey at times.

Review 31:Wonderful old world charm and elegance with superb service from excellent staff, and very good food. Although expensive this was excellent value for money! Well positioned for the delighful castle, port shops, restaurants and harbour.

Review 32:The dinner was excellent. My pre- dinner drink Kir Royale was the best I have ever tasted. And the food was beautifully presented and delicious. Wonderful music by Paul Tong kept us at the restaurant all night.

Review 33:Room with balcony was small and balcony was level with and overlooked roof of adjacent building.

Review 34:Staff were attentive, location walking distance from town.

Review 35:Just a lovely hotel - wonderful situation, super-helpful staff, charming in every way. Also delighted to discover the wonderful Indian Restaurant inside the hotel.

Review 36:Loved the attentivenes, consideration, friendliness and professionalism of all staff. Loved the decor everywhere and attention to detail. The Wimbledon flower arrangements excellent! Food and service superb in Curry restaurant and Brasserie and at breakfast and in the bars. Every comfort in bedroom including great showers (for a woman washing her hair especially!) and very good natural light and mirrors. Excellent valet car parking service.

Review 37:The spa facilities were not quite up to the standard of the rest of the hotel but still a nice facility to have and this did not detract from the overall experience.

Review 38:We were made to feel so welcome at this beautiful hotel. The public spaces are stunning and the outdoor pool is a lovely added bonus. The staff were superb. The decor is stunning. The bed and bed linens were so plush. Breakfast was delicious. Its a pricey hotel but you get what you pay for!

Review 39:tI felt that the food offered in the Brasserie could be improved upon. O.K. but not deserving more than a 6 out of 10.

Review 40:Kindness and efficiency of all staff members.

Review 41:One waiter thought he was friendly but we found him annoying. Did feel rushed at dinner first evening. Had issues with room keys repeatedly failing but this was fixed. Everything else fabulous.

Review 42:Excellent but friendly service, fabulous high quality food, the best champagne cocktails we've ever had. Loved the small outside space near the cocktail bar.

Review 43:The room was small for the price, and the hotel is at the top of a steep hill

Review 44:Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, very well equipped, great view over St Peter Port to the sea

Review 45:The helpful, friendly and well trained staff. The l'occitane toiletries provided, fluffy towels, facilities on site. The restaurant and food are excellent in fact we have nothing bad at all to say everything as fabulous.

Review 46:Staff used to be extremely professional and work as a team, this is not quite as good. Room was good apart from at back of hotel and rubbish collected at 2.00am. Breakfast staff has difference of opinion which would not have happened before

Review 47:Location, comfort, service

Review 48:Everything was perfect

Review 49:We love the ambience and quality of this hotel having stayed previously. And we were not disappointed. The staff were fabulous - nothing was too much trouble.

Review 50:The walk uphill from the harbour to the hotel was fairly demanding for OAP's, but it saved us having to spend time in the hotel gym.

Review 51:Both my husband and I were particularly impressed with the efficiency and very pleasant and helpful approach of all members of the hotel staff.

Review 52:Upgraded to queen room, very small still, double bed was made up of 2 single mattresses not that comfortable. Great food one evening and service one evening v poor next. They seemed to take the staff away to cater for a conference taking place at hotel with dinner for 2 coming I at over £140 you don't expect poor service

Review 53:Nice friendly staff very welcoming

Review 54:The weather !!

Review 55:Location, facilities, restaurant all excellent. The set 3 course dinner for UKP 17.95 was delicious, just right and very good value. The OGH deserves its 5 stars and will not disappoint you.

Review 56:Not cheap (but not unreasonable value) Sometimes slow wifi Noisy guests from functions

Review 57:Luxury cotton beading Friendly efficient staff Nice food

Review 58:We had paid for King Size room but had been 'upgraded' to a much smaller room but with a balcony. Not sure the upgrade worked for us.

Review 59:The staff were all wonderful and could not have been more helpful

Review 60:Can't think of anything

Review 61:Perfect hotel for relaxation. Situated in a quiet location but very close to the shops, cafés and restaurants in and around the St Peter Port harbour. We enjoyed an excellent champagne cream tea in the Brasserie on our arrival, and I was treated to a wonderful Swedish massage at the Spa. Rooms were spacious and very clean and comfortable. The full English breakfast lived up to our expectations. But best of all were all the friendly, helpful hotel staff. I look forward to staying here again on my next visit.

Review 62:In order to get from your room to the pool or spa it is necessary to move through public areas of the hotel, sometimes having to squeeze between tables of diners in your bathrobe. A great deal of thought needs to go into the general layout of the place. On one occasion hotel guests were unable to use pool facilities because they were being used by non-guests. If somebody is paying up to several thousand pounds a week for the facilities, they need to be available.

Review 63:The customer service and general staff attentiveness. Nice building with attractive interior.. Pretty good breakfast cooked to order.

Review 64:Pepper ice cream. Loved the food but this I just wasn't sure about. Rest of stay perfect so totally not a big deal.

Review 65:Service level incredibly high. Wine tasting excellent and meals in the sunshine lovely

Review 66:No view from our room (room 135) although our children had a better view for same type of room (room 133). For one night it doesn't matter so much but would do for a longer stay. No indoor pool in the Spa. Weather was not so good, so no one used the outdoor pool.

Review 67:Very relaxing atmosphere, in a quiet location but very close to main shopping street. Excellent champagne cream tea served in the Brasserie and the full English breakfast was faultless. Great Swedish massage in the Spa. Staff throughout the hotel were top class.

Review 68:WIFI can be slow and intermittent.

Review 69:Everything really, it is a fantastic hotel with excellent facilities. The staff are brilliant, breakfast was superb, room beautifully furnished, housekeeping staff very attentive. Thanks for such a brlliant stay - we'll be back.

Review 70:Absolutely nothing, quite the best hotel we have ever stayed in and worth the cost!

Review 71:We stayed for four nights to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The Hotel took tremendous care that we had a very special stay. All the staff were attentive and charming, the hotel itself provided us with considerable comfort, the food in the brasserie was exceptional. The afternoon tea was excellent if a little too large (boxes were provided though to take away what we just couldn't manage!) Our bedroom was very large, with a very comfortable seating area, WIFI worked well and the bed was the right combination for us of firm with extremely soft pillows, lovely! The location is very good, close to St Peterport, high up so that you can see plenty of marine activity from the terraces. We came home feeling very lucky that we had had such a special experience.

Review 72:booked two queen rooms one spacious the other room 134 small and inadequate space for luggage. poor television reception

Review 73:location and free car parking very friendly and helpful staff

Review 74:We went there to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary and from the warmth of the welcome onwards we were made to feel special. The room was comfortable, the food was excellent and the staff were friendly, attentive and really helpful.A superb hotel.

Review 75:The wifi consistently dropped out during our stay.

Review 76:We were on our honeymoon and as part of the turn down service we were given a complimentary bottle of champagne with chocolate dipped strawberries. Very decadent. We were also impressed with the quality of the breakfast.

Review 77:Nothing

Review 78:A thoroughly comfortable and well appointed hotel. Staff were friendly, attentive and welcoming. The tour on arrival was excellent. A real gem.

Review 79:Room allocated on arrival was not good. Right at the top/back, small and choc full of furniture. More like a travel lodge with decor. No service. We had to ask for everything we needed. Waiter in the Governors restaurant was on his own and the restaurant was full. Not good, not welcoming. Would not return

Review 80:We were moved to a room with a sea view.Food in the Governors restaurant was delicious. Pool was divine and Poolside assistant Sophie was very attentive. Ken the breakfast waiter was charming.

Review 81:Cannot think of anything that could have made our experience better!

Review 82:The delightful outlook, impressive decor, comfortable ambience and delicious food were only surpassed by the warm welcome given to us by the staff, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Will certainly be returning and recommending to others.

Review 83:Too much info about Bea Someone! The name keeps popping up. We don't need that. The staff are there, on the ground, doing the 'donkey work' and they deserve the credit :)

Review 84:Friendly, helpfull staff Furnishings, especially the art Many options to eat, drink, or just to sit about and relax Views and location

Review 85:The parking outside the hotel was a bit tricky - luckily there was valet parking

Review 86:The central position of the hotel , a very helpful staff , a great view of the castle from my room and tasty breakfasts

Review 87:The room was a bit dated and the view from the balcony was restricted by the huge roof in front of it.
