Reviews for Fownes Hotel

Review 1:Room was extremely cold. I asked if there was anything they could do and they gave me a portable heater which made no difference. Very dated. Had to leave at 07.00 because it was too cold and I had only slept for two hours on and off. You have to pay extra for parking.

Review 2:Location Good service from staff

Review 3:Bathroom felt a bit tired, in need of a freshen up. Breakfast cheap but not up to much. Plastic tumblers for juice a bit of a let-down...

Review 4:Good base for city centre shopping etc. Staff quite friendly. Nice large bed.

Review 5:i actually came away with flea bites. i was paying cash but the receptionist swiped my card and it was declined because i drew out the cash to pay they insisted on £100 extra cash as a deposit this is a ridiculous rule as who carries £100 spare money on a night out

Review 6:Breakfast was good but a little expensive compared to other places I have visited.

Review 7:Friendly staff at a busy time of the year ( new years eve ). Warm clean rooms, plus the hotel is in the centre of the city without getting the noises of clubs and bars.Plenty of parking space.

Review 8:Our meal took almost an hour to arrive minus the garlic bread that the penne pasta should have been served with. Our sink gurgled when someone next door/room above emptied their wash basin. It was very, very loud!

Review 9:The hotel was clean and the staff friendly

Review 10:Noise from the bar and function rooms. With a young family, being placed in a family room near these ruined our stay and as they were fully booked we could not move rooms, otherwise a decent hotel.

Review 11:Location

Review 12:Nothing

Review 13:The room was clean . The bed was comfy had a good nights sleep . Excellent staff . Fair size car park . Excellent location 2 mins walk to the town centre but far enough away not to get all the noise .

Review 14:We like to have a pool and spa or at least a spa, even though the hotel is quite dated, if it had this facility it would be almost perfect!

Review 15:Location is excellent

Review 16:Paying for car parking ..

Review 17:That it's had lots of improvements to decor that was tired now looks fresh and clean lovely hotel very close to town centre.

Review 18:Noise from the Christmas Party in the Function Room,(I think you should be told during the booking process whether to expect this or not!) Run down Hotel that would benefit with at least changing some of the carpets. Parking should be free for guests.

Review 19:The chaps serving Breakfast were great. Breakfast was OK. Good location.

Review 20:The place is tired and in need of a refurb, we had Damp in bedroom, breakfast was awful, bathroom needs updating.

Review 21:Reception staff very helpful, bar staff very friendly, breakfast staff very attentive

Review 22:The extractor fan situated outside my bedroom window wasn't turned off in the night...so had to endure very uncomfortably noisy night...which was a shame as the bedroom was very well appointed & the bed was comfortable, or would have been if I could have slept

Review 23:The staff were very helpful, lunch good, buffet meal provided for wedding party very good..

Review 24:dated rooms and furniture in the rooms. sarcastic cheer from the cleaning staff when i left my room 2 minutes before check out time.

Review 25:great location, nice staff.

Review 26:Old-fashioned and disappointing decor. In serious need of modernisation. It's like stepping into the 1980s. Crying out to be a boutique hotel but stuck in a time-warp.

Review 27:Location is perfect

Review 28:On walking back from the town we approached the hotel car park from the rear and were surprised to hear and see various males (not sure if staff) smoking and swearing loudly. They didn't seem to care whether we heard them or not.

Review 29:The receptionists were very helpful and made a great first impression. The position of the hotel was near enough to the town centre to enjoy all it had to offer yet not noisy.

Review 30:Could have had help with taking bags up on second floor as no lift. Couldnt fault anything eles

Review 31:Rooms exceptionally large. Great location. Quiet and private.

Review 32:The noise from the road is quite loud - even through ear plugs. the curtains didn't darken the room from the streetlamps so quite bright at night. Parking was free last year but £5 this year. The receptionist didn't ask how our stay was, she just took the parking charge on my card. That is not good customer service imo. £15 breakfast is why we ate in town.

Review 33:Comfy bed, and good location. Good value double room but preferred king size room last year-not on main road.

Review 34:Breakfast - poor quality food and buffet food was lukewarm - not much choice.

Review 35:Lovely quirky hotel, good location, lovely staff (particularly Jen on reception who didn't mind us asking to move rooms as we had been allocated a ground floor room and I had requested a room on an upper floor. Plenty of car parking available. Easy walk to Worcester centre.

Review 36:Carpets in hall threadbare. Room cold on arrival. Could do with better selection of teas in room rather than just tea and coffee. Worse point was being charged for car park - we didn't k ow about this until we looked at the receipt in the car on our way out! Would have liked curtains in the bathroom too! Decor could do with an update - bit 90s.

Review 37:Good size room and bed. Nice bathroom

Review 38:it wasn't a bad experience per sae but the rooms are far too hot and the windows didn't open to let air in. very cricky floor boards too, sleep disturbed by other guests moving/waliking

Review 39:location and access to the towm. we come back time and time again for the great breakfast!!!!

Review 40:Beautiful hotel, keeping the history of the building. Room spacious and clean. Staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble and they went the extra mile to meet our needs. Thank you!

Review 41:We were in a room on the ground floor looking out at the covered entrance. It was very noisy with people arriving and leaving. These rooms need double glazing!! Also the room needs better lighting.

Review 42:The location was great with only a few minutes walk to the shops and restaurants. The staff were very helpful with a broken light in our room. Onsite parking very welcome in a busy town centre.

Review 43:Staff were not helpful also a member of staff walked in our room unannounced and without knocking we were actually getting dressed at the time as well

Review 44:Locality

Review 45:Although the hotel looks very grand the rooms are very tired and our bed was very uncomfortable. Carpets were threadbare and a little grubby. One of my pet hates is dirty cups and the ones in our room had only been swilled

Review 46:The room was rather dated and the carpets and bathroom were shabby, threadbare and bath enamel was chipped.Breakfast was not included in the price either.

Review 47:Excellent food in restaurant, very good waiter service. Comfortable beds. Despite only officially serving a carvery lunch on Sunday, the chef provided us with a well made sandwich, for which we were grateful. We had to be very close to the cathedral and the location was just right for our needs.

Review 48:Excellent location, good parking, the food was excellent, the room was spacious and very clean. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.

Review 49:the shower was not very powerful and it took ages to wash my hair!

Review 50:Comfortable hotel with an interesting history. Good location close to the older part of town and the cathedral.

Review 51:I think that the £5 charge to park in their car park is totally out of order and a feeble excuse is that of us owned by another company. The charge even applies to blue badge holders which is disgraceful.

Review 52:On arrival the receptionist was polite and helpful. Clean very comfortable room. Breakfast in the morning was £8 and not £15.50 ax shown on Booking.com and was very tasty indeed. The breakfast was buffet style and had everything you could possibly want from cooked English to pastries, cereal, fruit and yoghurt etc. I had the cooked breakfast which although it was kept in a heated trolley it was still fresh, hot and tasty although the fried eggs could have been better. A very nice overnight stay, would definitely stay again.

Review 53:Tired facilities. Flat screen TV on old tv stand is just poor. Lift was very old and landing smelt old. Just needs freshening up as such a nice place.

Review 54:Classy place with great history and features.

Review 55:Awkward access from motorway. Dinner served very late Breakfast good but inefficient staff. Three people asked for room no. Eggs not available until 7.40

Review 56:We found the invoice unclear and were embarrassed at having to spend some time clarifying items.

Review 57:Its location. Staff were helpful and the meals well presented.

Review 58:The room was a bit cold when we first arrived. We thought that there should have been a booklet of information in the room- number for reception, wifi code etc. When we got the wifi code it didn't work.

Review 59:Room was clean

Review 60:Very dated furnishings and decor. Felt like it hadn't been done up since being created. Poor outdoor space. Breakfast was poor; undercooked bacon and food sitting on hot tray for a long time. Little choice beyond hot food. Felt a little cheap and not a "special" breakfast.

Review 61:Staff who would open bar and be pleasant to allow our group of friends to have a coffee or nightcap when we returned from a meal out.

Review 62:room needs update and lace curtains dirty also noticed most lace curtains dirty . breakfast average for money. hotel needs update

Review 63:location and staff lovely building

Review 64:We experienced 3 reception staff. One was very friendly and helpful. The other 2 not so much. There was a party on the saturday night and room 224 is directly above it. That wasnt fun :-/ The bed was far too soft and my back and neck were very painful the next day. My parents were in room 230. It was soooo hot! But at least quieter. The breakfast was great! And the staff that morning were lovely.

Review 65:The location is great! The building is gorgeous

Review 66:very tired décor. bathroom grimy. breakfast started relatively late and so was inconvenient, not told the times when the phoned me asking me to book breakfast.

Review 67:staff were friendly. excellent location

Review 68:Having two vehicles I was not impressed with having to pay for two lotsof vehicle parking. We travel all over the uk each weekend and veryrarely in the last 12 years have we come across this.

Review 69:Apart from the above we have not stopped talking positively about thisplace all weekend. Staff were better than excellent. Much attention paidto detail in a Victorian building. Found things I would expect in a topof the range hotel (safe, trouser press, gymnasium, library, 2 xhairdryers! Etc.. Food, chef and service was amazing and such brilliantvalue for money. We are definitely going there again as we have work inthe area in November.

Review 70:Breakfast a bit of a rip off at £17 per head for a very basic English breakfast buffet. Could hear people in the corridor outside my room - even if they were just walking it sounded like a stampede.

Review 71:Location very convenient. Basic hotel but very clean

Review 72:Very long radiator, but alas not more than warm, I was cold there, and glad of extra blankets, and used my hot water bottle. Other than that it was very comfortable , I would stay there again. Not easy to locate, presume unable to signpost on the main road, it took 2 attempts at finding the hotel.

Review 73:liked the historical building plus having a car park, it was close to the centre of Worcester. Nice double room and very roomy shower cubicle, even though I prefer a bath

Review 74:Needs updating, reception staff friendly but gave no information on breakfast/restaurant times. There was a wedding and a large party in the evening who although not a problem meant other guests we're ignore.

Review 75:Period building

Review 76:Room near road so heard traffic from very early morning , suggest secondary glazing to road facing rooms ! Couldn't control radiator heating in room & bathroom as monitored from a central source , so room / bathroom was cold especially in the evening . This could be improved

Review 77:Location , convenient to train station . Single room good size . Delicious English breakfast

Review 78:I do not like being charged to park. What else are we supposed to do with our car? Guests should be allowed to park for free! During breakfast, a member of staff was standing at the end of our table, watching us eat! I felt quite uncomfortable by this, it was as if he didn't remove our plates the very second we finished eating, he thought we might steal them!

Review 79:Great location, close to night life, pubs, etc Room was spacious and the right temperature. The bar stayed open all night! Breakfast was nicely cooked and very tasty.

Review 80:I didn't like the fact that there wasn't a small fridge in the room & the heating didn't come on till early hours in the morning. Also thought the price for breakfast was very expensive

Review 81:I liked the fact that the rooms were quite spacious & comfortable

Review 82:Looked worn and tired. IKEA TV stand was too low to watch TV from bed comfortably. Lampshade in bath was very dirty. Rug needed restretching - very rumpled. Furniture was very worn.

Review 83:Parking was convenient. Breakfast staff was very nice. Easy access to downtown Worcester. Did not try the restaurant for dinner, but the pub food was very good.

Review 84:The surly staff who didn't care whether you were happy or not. The shabbyness of the room, and the lack of cleaning in the corners. The sound of workmen sawing and banging in the next room before 8am. The overcooked and very average breakfast, and the fact that the hotel wanted to charge us double their per head list price for it because we booked via Booking.com!

Review 85:The location.

Review 86:The breakfast wasn't as good as I expected..It wasn't hot just luke warm..basic bedrooms need extra cleaning...

Review 87:Central location.Beautiful outdoor seating.Comfortable beds.Rooms were big.Nice bar area.lovely stay..would come back again.

Review 88:The only thing that spoiled the stay was to be woken up at 12.40 am by residents drinking and talking aloud in the smoking area which was situated right below our window, and we needed the windows open because of the heat it's a shame you can't move the smoking area.

Review 89:the food, and the whole hotel.

Review 90:Difficult to have breakfast should be an area inside where you can take your dog

Review 91:The staff were very friendly great hotel to take a pet the hotel had a nice atmosphere we where made to feel welcome

Review 92:Requested an early check in even called before we arrived. The receptionist said they did not have a record of the early check in, but I had a confirmation email as proof. Turned out we couldn't even check in at 2pm as our room still was not ready, so check in was late! They obviously didn't do enough to help us check in early. We were at a wedding which started at 2pm, we obviously wanted to drop bags off before it started. Bed linen was dirty. Breakfast was nothing special for the price and coffee was like water

Review 93:Big room lots of windows, comfortable bed.

Review 94:Hotel is looking a bit tired. Grouting in the bathroom needs replacing and the walls need repainting.Good size room with tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast priced at £16.00 is somewhat steep, and therefore declined it.

Review 95:Reasonably comfy bed having been traveling for over 15 hours and arriving close to midnight.. Good location.

Review 96:There was a wedding on, so very noisy until past midnight. Creaky floorboards, so others customers waking us up when they came in at 5am

Review 97:The hotel was central to the town centre

Review 98:Our bed was not a double bed - as booked - but two single beds pushed together. None of the staff were very friendly or happy. There is an additional charge for using their car park. Overall it was not worth the £75 paid for one night (with no breakfast) plus another £5 for parking on site.

Review 99:Hotel was close to venue we were attending and right in centre of town.

Review 100:Couldn't work out how to ring reception from room. No loo roll. Wifi codes didn't work, no information in room so had to keep going to reception. Breakfast disappointing.

Review 101:Lovely staff very welcoming. Wasn't allowed in room yet but still able to use facilities.

Review 102:Being charged £5 for car parking Bedroom very hot Reception staff on Sunday morning not very friendly

Review 103:Manager allowed us to check in prior to 2.00 pm which was very good as attending Worcester for a wedding at 1.30.

Review 104:Some disturbance with footsteps outside our room in the early hours of the morning. i.e. after midnight and before 6am.

Review 105:The location, the good sized room, with sensible and attractive furniture, the helpful staff - especially at breakfast.

Review 106:Initially allocated room that had not been serviced; quickly moved to new room but then a workman (for the hotel) started an electric sander right outside the window, so I couldn't work or rest. The management were not helpful in addressing this problem, saying it wouldn't last more than another 45 minutes!

Review 107:Location and parking

Review 108:There was an *extremely* noisy extractor fan from the kitchen (?) below my window (Rm 316). I couldn't shut my windows because of the heat so it woke me at 6:00am and did not get turned off till 10:30 that night. Also the room had a severe lack of electrical sockets - for e.g. laptop, phone charger; only the kettle socket was available.

Review 109:Breakfast was abysmal. Eggs etc sitting out in dishes for half an hour or more. Stale croissants. Nasty sliced bread which did not even fit in the toaster properly.

Review 110:Good central location with parking.

Review 111:Too hot in the rooms Rooms dated Main problem was the floor boards were very noisy, woke me up a few times. This needs sorting out room number 229!

Review 112:Too hot in the rooms Rooms a bit dated Floor boards are very noisy when people walk past the room, woke me up a few times.

Review 113:We didn't stay long enough!

Review 114:The building is beautiful, only a 2 minute walk to the stunning old buildings in the town & very close to the county cricket ground which was the purpose of our visit.

Review 115:We found your online information about parking difficult to understand and ended up paying for public parking. The duvet on the bed was too hot for the summer. I feel an alternative sheet could have been provided.

Review 116:Only issue was the mattress. The bed was lovely and clean but the mattress felt ancient and you could feel the springs! Very uncomfortable:-(

Review 117:Very friendly staff, helpful. At one point the same person was on reception... Then on the bar.. Then brought us room service! Give that guy a raise! Very clean, food was excellent!! Full marks to the Chef!

Review 118:Had to pay £5 to park in the hotel carpark. Bed was a small double and the quilt didnt cover 2 people properly, luckily it was a warm night. The breakfast was £15 per person for a very poor self service selection.

Review 119:The wifi was good.

Review 120:Was told that I could shower before official check-in. When I checked in I was told this wasn't possible. This was really irritating as I'd just driven 4hrs to go a wedding and wanted to freshen up first.

Review 121:On booking requested a quiet room. The room was far from quiet but no other room available. Room needs double glazing and thick curtains.

Review 122:Cleanliness and closeness to city centre.

Review 123:Went into the town for breakfast as we considered your price of £15 exorbitant. We also had screaming seagulls from about 5am but don't suppose you can do much about that.

Review 124:Position superb. Staff ver pleasant and helpful.

Review 125:Money was the first priority - not customer satisfaction. We were upset that breakfast was not included in our stay. A mistake made by myself. Nonetheless I was willing to pay for breakfast but appalled that no exceptions were made for my 10 yr old who does not eat an adult breakfast. Had the staff made an exception because of my mistake I would have returned happily but it was as though they wanted every single penny they could take. When I got my bill and was charged £5 for parking in the hotel car park after paying £88.00 for 1 night b&b for a double very standard room it just made me feel more adamant never to return. Such a shame as I would have gone back if they had been more customer service focused. Will find somewhere else next time as lived Worcester and will want to see the town again.

Review 126:Locality of city centre. Clean room and bathroom.

Review 127:Arrived approximately 45 mins before actual check-in and was not allowed to occupy the room! Other guests also arrived before and were also 'told' that they were not allowed to check-in. What is 45 mins? Not a good start. Rooms look a bit tired. Grouting around bath/shower failing. Wallpaper peeling off the walls in the bathroom, Noisy extractor fan in bathroom needs replacing. Poor choice for breakfast, Too many staff at breakfast just standing around and not attending to guests. Suggest a sizeable overhaul of the whole hotel (decor, facilities, staff check-in and maintenance).

Review 128:The Barman in the evening and the Chef at Breakfast. Location was good.

Review 129:We had a small problem, quickly sorted it with the front desk

Review 130:Friendly, welcoming, helpful staff. Excellent breakfast. Interesting building, nicely converted and in a very good, Central location with parking.

Review 131:Disappointed in the lack of information about what is such a historical building and former business in Worcester. Fownes is a former Glove factory. It was a very important part of Worcester in the 19th century. Apart from a few photos on the wall of reception and an old sewing machine there was no information at all. This is a missed opportunity to the Hotel and very disappointing to visitors.

Review 132:Location brilliant. 5 mins walk from all the main Worcester City sights.

Review 133:Quite basic & dated but pleasant. Very hot even with fan on all night. Curtains cream and thin was full daylight in room from 5 am.

Review 134:Easy walk in to city centre for shops, pubs and restaurants. Marie on the desk was very good. I had checked the booking with them on the phone. Room good size, but quite basic and dated. We noted other reviews and took a fan but they now have brand new fans in every room. Parking was easy £5 for 24 hrs. Breakfast was £15 per person, or you can walk 2 mins into town to local pubs and pay less than a fiver !

Review 135:Shabby furniture (not the bed though), very creased border in bedroom. Clinical bar eating area for dinner, disappointing that the restaurant was not used and that there were so few people eating, made for lack of atmosphere!

Review 136:Proximity to the Cathedral and city centre area. The food was actually very nice and the service was good.

Review 137:Room should have been ready at 14:00 wasn't ready till 1440 which made us late for a wedding. Needs a bit of TlC looks run down and floor boards were so noisy woke up lots with people walking in corridor outside room.

Review 138:Was comfortable and was situated perfectly

Review 139:How I imagine a grim 1950s institution, something between an old folks home and a museum of your grandmother's furniture, with highlights in brown and beige.

Review 140:The car park, and that was £5 extra.

The Fine Print

In December, the restaurant is closed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday due to Christmas parties. Please note that these Christmas parties will be at the hotel from December 1st to January 1st, during the weekend, therefore it might be noisy in the evenings.During some weekends, there might be private functions with music taking place at the property.
