Reviews for The Royal An Lochan
Review 1:Food was first class and location brilliant, superb views over the kyles from the room were worth the room rate value alone, absolutely magic! Old style bar within the hotel is a must visit, classic venue.
Review 2:Couldn't fault anything
Review 3:Delightful, comfortable stay with absolutely stunning views, the evening meal of seafood to start followed by lamb was delicious :)
Review 4:Unfortunately to facilitate breakfast service this hotel uses a back dark room for breakfast unless you are up early to use the lovely front sea view room. As the room was empty and service was not busy it was very disappointing for us to have to eat in this room when all the tables in the front room were empty. Please change this arrangement management as it spoils an otherwise great hotel.
Review 5:This is one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in.It has a lovely lounge with comfy sofas and fires, loads of interesting books on the shelves to browse and a very comfy bed. The hotel has also has wonderful views of the kyles of bute. The hotel has the feeling of a home from home with very helpful and friendly staff. There was also a little yard round the back to store our bikes in.
Review 6:No bad experience only the Scottish weather which at times was showery.
Review 7:The lovely setting, our comfortable room and spacious bathroom. The view of the Kyles of Bute from our windows , our very pleasant hosts. The food was very enjoyable and nicely served.
Review 8:I felt the manager was rather unfriendly and unapproachable. We did not eat in the hotel as I felt there was no atmospher in the hotel. The management, in my opinion, need to look at making the hotel more friendly. We ate in another hotel in the town and had to wait on a table, the place was busy and welcoming unlike the Royal Hotel. For this reason I would not return which is a pity as the hotel itself had so many good points.
Review 9:Breakfast was first class, lots of nice touches in the hotel.
Review 10:We failed to enquire the location of our room. Result was we were on the second floor and there was no lift. We are both in our late seventies and found the 41 steps a bit of a struggle. Certainly gave us a bit of exercise though.
Review 11:The location. The owners welcome and commitment to to ensuring all was well.
Review 12:Great location overlooking Kyles of Bute.Very clean and comfortable.Warm welcome from owners.Sea view room if you can is a good idea(room 3 was nice for us).King sized bed.Plenty of towels.A bath with over-shower to suit each of us.Nice beers and whiskies.Lovely lounge area.Easy parking outside.
Review 13:I was only able to stay one night because of my itinerary.
Review 14:The experience from start to finish was fantastic. The view from the hotel was breathtaking and a quick drink in the snug and cosy pub attached to the hotel was perfect after a long but wonderful drive. The food and the staff was both incredible. I look forward to visiting again. Great experience.
Review 15:Unfortunately we could not eat in the dining room because my husband did not like what was on the menu. We asked if we could order from the bar menu and sit in dining room and pay dining room prices. We were told no, the owner made no attempt to offer an alternative!!! Very disappointed.
Review 16:We had very little to complain about. The hotel is obviously being renovated in stages and the corridors etc need modernising but they have concentrated on the rooms so I feel I'm being picky. Would be happy to go back again.
Review 17:Comfortable room, outstanding views, helpful staff and fantastic food. The food was well above 3 star quality.
Review 18:One of the nicest hotels we visited while touring Both Scotland and southern England but the restruant Was the only meal of six weeks we found to be Very very disappointing, we told them we traveled There to celebrate our fortieth anniversary And wife's sixty fourth birthday . The meal was both the most expensive and badly Cooked on our trip, we ate out the second night, the Breakfast was excellent !! The owner put me in mind of Basil from Faulty towers,
Review 19:I only stayed 3 nights- next time it will be 10
Review 20:Location was excellent just as required. Quality of food and wine was excellent and very much better than you'd expect at an outlying location. Bar was well stocked with local ales. I could ask for nothing more.
Review 21:Would have liked some mood music in the restaurant.
Review 22:Our room had a fabulous view over the water and was very comfortable. We enjoyed the welcome shortbread and other thoughtful touches supplied by the owners.
Review 23:There is no lounge bar facility, so if you don't want a formal dinner it is necessary to eat in the public bar, where the food is ok but you lose the benefit and atmosphere of the wonderful location. Even if you want to relax with a drink after a meal it's not clear how you get a drink without traipsing to the public bar to order.
Review 24:The hotel, which we have stayed in before, is in a wonderful location in beautiful Tighnabruach, and our room, which was very comfortable, had a great view over the water, which is literally a stones throw from the hotel.
Review 25:Weather was mixed - some sunny and some wet - so you take your chances to get out and about. Some redecorating still needed in the bedroom we were in, but not a major issue.
Review 26:Location was stunnning, with lots to see and do if you like walking and touring in scenic countryside or island hopping, accommodation was comfortable and clean, food was first rate, staff friendly and welcoming and prepared to share useful advice, and just a nice sense of being away from it all.
Review 27:A bit pricey but was high season. Noisy table beside us but we are rather quiet.
Review 28:Warm welcome. Excellent room and décor of the hotel. Food good. Amazing place near Portvadie for Tarbet ferry for access to Kennacraig and also to Bute. They called it the secret Argyll coast and definitely worth a visit.
Review 29:Only one thing bed was quite hard and not very comfortable, so not the best sleep, might just be me and my wife. Please dont let that put you off. Go there!
Review 30:Location is stunning, Tighnabruaich is a wee gem. You must visit. Room was lovely, good size, large bay windows with wicker chairs to sit and take in the beautiful view of the Kyles of Bute. Staff very friendly and helpful, tasty, quality meal in the evening and excellent cooked breakfast, yummy. Lovely comfortable lounge with loads of leather sofas to relax and enjoy a drink. Definetely will stay here again
Review 31:Nothing!
Review 32:Warm welcome. Excellent service and attention to detail. Spotlessly clean. Lovely décor. Interesting artwork provided by the local art gallery. Outstanding quality and presentation of food. Fabulous views. Peaceful tranquillity. Value for money.
Review 33:It was a shame that you had to choose between the bar or main restaurant for evening meal as the restaurant was really nice but there wasn't really anything on the restaurant menu that we really fancied so we opted for the bar menu which was varied. However there was little ambience in the bar and the tables were quite low for eating. Would have preferred to eat in the main restaurant as when you go away for the weekend it is nice to feel special. Overall a very nice hotel and the lady who owned the hotel was very informative and friendly as were the two young people who work there.
Review 34:Location perfect
Review 35:There were a couple of chips in the enamel bath, the bed was too hard for us and I did not like the pillows but none of the above spoiled our stay.
Review 36:Hotel was very comfortable and spotless.Dinner was excellent and not overly expensive. Drinks and wine again were not overly expensive. Bedroom and bathroom were very spacious. Nice touches - bathrobes, quality toiletries and delicious home made shortbread with plenty of tea and coffee. All in all an enjoyable stay.
Review 37:Nothing
Review 38:The view from our bedroom window looking out over the water was awesome. The staff were friendly and helpful without being 'in your face'. Spacious bedroom with 2 leather chairs for us to admire the view. Tighnabruaich is so peaceful, it's beautiful.
Review 39:Stairs could do with re-carpeting, the food whe the chef is not in residence, but these are only minor complaints.
Review 40:Staff, location, the food when the chef is in residence, owners. Go, try it.
Review 41:The dining was superb as was the lounge seating , and conservatory. The location is superb as it is on the flat so even ones with slight walking difficulties could manage a walk or two.
Review 42:Lovely room, with a stunning view.
Review 43:Food was fantastic, very friendly staff and location is stunning
Review 44:The food was great. Very clean room and the view was amazing
Review 45:nothing to contribute here
Review 46:friendliness of proprietors
Review 47:Was a little expensive.
Review 48:Hotel was clean, comfortable and staff friendly.
Review 49:We had a top floor sea facing room with a bay window. Glorious view. Lovely fresh and clean room. Food was outstanding (dinner and breakfast).
Review 50:Location
Review 51:Location was wonderful Food in restaurant was lovely
Review 52:Bar meal was not good quality
Review 53:Relaxed an tranquil
Review 54:Fine for two or three days but quite pricey for longer, for us.
Review 55:Welcoming friendly staff. Wonderful room. Excellent situation.
Review 56:Menu very pricey .....food disappointing but vg service.
Review 57:Excellent hotel in a simply stunning location. All staff were friendly and helpful at all times and the food was amazing
Review 58:Hotel door locked at 10pm, so don't forget to take your key. Residents lounge also locked in the evening.
Review 59:Rooms clean and tidy
Review 60:I am veggie - would have been good to see some veggie sausages on breakfast menu
Review 61:Staff, facilities, view
Review 62:nothing
Review 63:Staff dedicated and friendly. Room with en suite excellent. Food very good. Art work display excellent. All in all an excellent place to stay

Review 65:Leaving
Review 66:Everything
Review 67:Wonderful meals, lovely staff, quiet, relaxed time, good views. Enjoyable.
Review 68:Typical Scottish weather but this has nothing to do with the hotel
Review 69:FAB TIME WAS HAD BY WIFE AND MYSELF STAFF MADE YOU FEEL MOST WELCOME
Review 70:lovely hotel overlooking the sea. The evening meal is one of the best meals I've had in all of Scotland.
Review 71:The Room was beautiful, overlooking the water. The bathroom was also huge and gorgeous. We enjoyed our stay there very much.
Review 72:Location Views Food Comfort Sense of relaxation
Review 73:staff could have gone the extra mile.
Review 74:The food, the spectacular view, made to feel welcome, the lounges great decor and very comfortable.
Review 75:Staff a bit officious Not much atmosphere Rooms in need if some attention
Review 76:Great welcome, fabulous room with sea view. Very comfortable accomodation and the meals were perfection. We were extremely well looked after, would recommend to anyone.
Review 77:Food was either brilliant - langoustine, or poor cold tarte tatin. Service was friendly but amateurish. Usual dodgy power shower, why is this so common???
Review 78:Amazing views, comfortable large bed/room/bathroom. Great breakfast. Good value, owners very nice people.
Review 79:It was overpriced for the facilities provided. Small things overlookedlike no shower hat, no rubber safety mat for very slippery bath, noinstructions for electric heater so we could not turn it on. We did noteat there in the evening as we felt that the menu was too'fussy' - and overpriced. We brought these matters to theattention of the manager and we were thanked for our feedback.
Review 80:The setting alongside the water
Review 81:Nothing really.
Review 82:We received a warm welcome from the hotel staff. Our room was comfortable with lovely views over the Kyles of Bute. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent.
Review 83:the single lane road on last 20 miles or so approach
Review 84:wonderful location right on the shore with amazing views over Kyles of bute. Décor lovely. restaurant food excellent
Review 85:This was our second visit but we had been so impressed last year we decided that on this occasion we would invite friends along. Again, we were not disappointed: Proprietors, Keith and Christine went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one, always with that special personal touch. The food is excellent, served in a comfortable, tastefully decorated dining room with views to die for! On our second evening, feeling too lazy after a wonderful day visiting Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute(not to be missed) we were served equally tasty 'pub grub' outdoors overlooking the sea-magical! All in all The Royal an Lochan has all the necessary ingredients for a short holiday. We will definitely return!
Review 86:Small bed, thin douvet, mushy fruit at breakfast, staff not around, rubberytasteless scrambled egg, inefible, chairs in the dining room well pasttheir sell by date, owners not welcoming or helpful staff untrained
Review 87:The scenery
Review 88:Love this hotel. Have visited 6 times now. It is a friendly, relaxed butprofessionally run hotel. Each time we visit, we notice how the presentowners are continually improving standards. The staff go out of theirway to ensure guests are satified. This time we took my parents as mydad has his 80 th birthday soon. The hotel approached me about anymobility issues he may have, were accomodating for his dietaryrequirements and discussed with me whether he'd like any specialattention for his birthday or would prefer to celebrate quietly with us.The feeling is that they care about their guests' experiences. Weenjoy the location of the hotel as it has a sea view and countryside. There is easy access to the Kintyre peninsula, Bute and the Cowalpeninsula. A great place to enjoy the outdoors or visit indoor touristattractions.
Review 89:Forme, the food was expensive for the portions you get, but I admit to prefering bulk.
Review 90:It was located in the town I had to visit. The staff were helpful and friendly. Food was good. The Wi-Fi worked
Review 91:Ambience lovely and all staff very friendly and attentive especially Christine who thought of everything. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel for location food and atmosphere. Anne and Iain McQueen
Review 92:The restaurant was slightly pricey (although the food was excellent) and there wasn't really any alternative nearby. Not very much to do in the surrounding area unless you have a car.
Review 93:Very clean, comfortable and nicely decorated room with all the conveniences I would expect (including home-made shortbread!), and beautiful lounge area with open fire for playing boardgames beside; choice of two places to eat and drink on site; very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff.
Review 94:The Managments attitude was very poor.We had a number of issues with our room which where resolved by others. The final straw was a picture above the bed falling off the wall, whilst we slept , onto our heads. we reported it to reception the next morning, however, despite this and some pretty visible bruising no apology or sign of concern was provided by the Management.
Review 95:The scenery and location where fantastic. The general staff, Andrea & Gabby, worked really hard to provide a good service and help with any isues or concerns.
Review 96:They should expand the menu slightly.
Review 97:The location was stunning. The hotel was beautiful and the room was extremely comfortable. The staff were really helpful and friendly. The food was extremely tasty, although not a huge choice.
Review 98:Nothing, even the weather was good.
Review 99:Fantastic location overlooking Isle of Bute. Very nice small hotel, good food, friendly and helpful staff, lovely rooms overlooking the loch. Not cheap but this is the only way to keep it exclusive. Would recommend this hotel to anyone, but not for children.
Review 100:The welcome from Gabi and Andrea could not have been friendlier or more helpful. We were very well looked from the moment we arrived until our departure. The accommodation was very comfortable with stunning views across the sea. The real find was the dinner which was imaginative, beautifully presented and made excellent use of the range of fresh produce available locally.
Review 101:Excellent location with great views over the Kyles of Bute. Staff were very attentive and gave great personal service from check in to check out. Room was very clean and comfortable - nice touch with the complimentary bottle of water and shortbread. Great view from the restaurant and great seafood. Would definitely go back.
Review 102:The Royal An Lochan stood up to its claims. We originally booked for four nights bed and breakfast but enjoyed our time there so much we booked for another three nights. We had a very enjoyable, relaxing holiday.
Review 103:Smell in room 1 was very off putting so had to move to Room 3. Smelled like a wet dog had slept in it the night before. Room 3 was smaller but nice views from big bay windows.
Review 104:The views from room were amazing. Food was good too. Staff were friendly and good at what they did.
Review 105:Beautiful, remote location, very comfortable accommodations, good food, good service. A very special spot, and the new owners (2010) are doing a great job. Former chef was more experienced, but this one is coming along. All in all, a great place, off the beaten track. You'll love it.
Review 106:There was nothing we didnt like - we had a lovely break in a lovely hotel and served lovely food .
Review 107:The food and meals were delicious , lovely presented and good quality food .The resturaunt setting is lovely and the decor very pleasing to the eye . Very good value for money
Review 108:Didn't dislike anything about the Hotel
Review 109:Fabulous location in one of the numerous beautiful areas of Scotland. Owners and staff very welcoming without being over-bearing. Hotel comfortable and tastefully decorated and the food served for dinner and breakfast, just delicious.
Review 110:I liked everything about the hotel but when we return we book a front facing room as the vista is superb.
Review 111:The hotel was situated in a most beautiful part of Scotland with stunning views from the front of the hotel. The lounge/conservatory were beautiful furnished and very nice to relax in with a nice bottle of wine after dinner. The breakfast was excellent. The linen used in the bedroom and in the restaurant/breakfasting rooms was of top quality. Dinner in the restaurant was a wonderful experience and excellent value for money. We had a wonderful relaxing time.
Review 112:Too difficult to make coffee in the morning.
Review 113:Very friendly - good but non intrusive attention. Lovely, comfortableroom. Quiet. Interesting and good menu. Extended my stay (even though Ireally could not afford to!)
Review 114:The food for dinner could have been better, and the selecton of wines should be improved.
Review 115:Location, the setting, the room, the view and helpful staff
Review 116:The male owner! Poor customer service.
Review 117:The location, view and the rooms.
Review 118:Unprepossessing entrance, lack of lift.
Review 119:Location, very pleasant public rooms, comfortable room, pleasant staff, excellent food.
