Reviews for Macdonald Alveston Manor Hotel

Review 1:The breakfast was 100% wi fi not the best but who can have everything

Review 2:Very clean helpful staff you should be very proud of them best I've stayed with and I have been traveling for 30 yrs or so with work

Review 3:The food is very overpriced didn't have breakfast as you have to pay £35 per couple regardless of what you have to eat. Expensive toast & marmalade! Everything from drinks to bar food is very pricey however you don't have to go too far to find somewhere else to eat and drink.

Review 4:The king size bed was extremely comfortable. Nice quiet location and close to all amenities.

Review 5:The cooked breakfast could have been better.

Review 6:The building, both outside and inside, is beautiful. Full of character and charm. Clean spa/pool facilities. Decent location a couple of minutes walk from the town centre.

Review 7:The breakfast room on the first morning was very disorganised! There were not enough staff to attend tables, guests waiting to be seated and there were long delays before food arrived....and some of the meal was cold. The buffet service on the second morning worked so much better! We had a double room, which means two showers taken each morning and each night. However, there was only one tiny bar of soap, a small bottle of shower gel, shampoo etc. and no face cloths! We expected better from a Hotel of this standard.

Review 8:Great location and a lovely setting. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms clean and the beds were very comfortable.

Review 9:Rooms and leisure facilities looked a bit dated. Bed (matress) not very comfortable. Unavailability of slots for spa treatments, which required booking in advance of the stay.

Review 10:Very short walk to river and old town centre. Building's character, at least in the 'old' section. Free use of swimming pool and sauna/steamroom. Easy parking. We went for our wedding anniversary and got a free room upgrade and chocolates! The price was good (but it was a special offer).

Review 11:the bed was awful got about 2 hours sleep which ment we missed breakfast! Not very clean in the room and could do with an update, it's a shame as there sister hotel the swans nest is cheaper and much nicer! So wished I had booked there!

Review 12:Location was great and spa staff and facilities were great

Review 13:Not able to get a room close to the living quarters (restaurant and bar) which was not ideal given that wanted to be near our sleeping toddler. Steam room was not very hot and somewhat smelly and pool was very chlorinated!

Review 14:Lovely staff. Delicious dinner at the restaurant and replete breakfast (seems a huge price if not included in room cost, though - nigh on £18!)

Review 15:Bar food and breakfast were good quality but expensive (and surcharge for kippers at breakfast). No fridge in room.

Review 16:Clean, good facilities, nice location, convenient for town centre.

Review 17:Spa was very basic no whirlpool? This is surely a must for any 4/5 star hotel. Also at breakfast the hot buffet wasn't so hot beans & eggs were luke warm. Could of done with heated flame under the metal containers like so many other hotels i have visited.

Review 18:Great looking manor house full of character set in great location. Very comfortable bed & staff very polite.

Review 19:It was very windy when we were there, and the old crittall windows were letting in a dreadful draft. There was a very long queue both to check in and to check out.

Review 20:We love Stratford upon Avon & this hotel is in an ideal situation. We have been before. We like the staff and the food.

Review 21:Not as described, total con to what you are shown to get on the website, my room was dirty, old and run down. Definitely not worth £110 for one night!

Review 22:Staff were pleasant and great location

Review 23:Poor service - no cot even though we rang in advance to check. Had to have refund and go home as no where for baby to sleep. Staff said nothing they can do. Wasted day travelling

Review 24:Location of room. I booked early but was located a long way from main facilities. The room was cold. Breakfast was indifferent. I have experience of this hotel from eighteen years ago which is why I booked. I was unpleasantly surprised. I will not be staying again.

Review 25:Very little

Review 26:Poor customer service - we had to wait some time before anyone came to check us in. At breakfast we had to wait about five minutes before a staff member attended to us to show us to a table. Staff must have forgotten about us since we had to remind them to take our order. (The breakfast menu promised 'mushrooms' - but we each had one only.) Similarly, service in the bar the night before was poor, with little interest shown in our arrival. My club sandwich was disappointingly dry, and the promised egg on the menu was somewhat 'minimal'. The waiter didn't see at all interested, even when I expressed my disappointment. The décor in the bedroom and surrounding corridors looked very tired, with the chairs in our room (room 5) very shabby and dirty. When mentioned to the staff member at check-out, she said that the hotel management was (quote) 'seriously considering' refurbishing the hotel. Such a shame about the lack of customer engagement, given the hotel's unique position.

Review 27:Splendid location, with only a 5 to 10 minute walk to the town centre. Wonderful, inviting entrance. Comfortable bed and quite well-appointed bedroom.

Review 28:Thought the breakfasts overpriced and merely average. Kitchen seems incapable of producing warm toast.

Review 29:Generally good hotel in great position - worked well for our weekend stay. Pool and facilities excellent.

Review 30:Room was right by the laundry, which seemed to operate all through the night, despite receptions reassurances that there were certain times it operated, very very noisy!! Also in not a fan of 'help yourself breakfast' and the choice was average, no black pudding despite it being on the menu

Review 31:Comfortable room great location we've been coming here on and off for over 29 years!! It's a great hotel

Review 32:Communication prior to stay could be improved.

Review 33:Very comfy bed, good size room, good quality food, great selection at breakfast, high standard of customer service

Review 34:The staff couldn't talk much English. Cost £5 to park in the car park for a 2 night stay.

Review 35:The hotel was stunning , very clean. The bed was massive and very comfortable. The location was perfect. Minutes walk into town. Lots of lovely shops and restaurants.

Review 36:We had booked the king size executive suite which obviously we were expecting to be quite big but the room was very small. The swimming pool and spa was out side the hotel which was quite inconvenient as its winter. Poor customer serviced from reception as we phoned twice from our room for ice in which we waited half an hour for. Later on in the evening we had to phone twice again for our desserts in which we waited1 hour. When calling reception the second time for our desserts the phone just kept ringing and ringing.

Review 37:Great location.

Review 38:I have emailed the Operations Manager of the hotel with certain concerns I had about our stay - I will give my opinion when he has had a chance to reply.

Review 39:The Wi-Fi required registration to The Cloud and then did not work (in Room 204 and I suspect, other rooms) The air conditioning did not work properly.

Review 40:The location for Stratford's theatres and restaurants was very good

Review 41:The distance and to our room and no lift to get to the second floor. The breakfast was abysmal, we asked for the "MacDonald excellent breakfast." the order was taken wrong, the potato scone was uncooked the egg was like rubber, and all was cold. My husband pointed out to the waiter he had got my order wrong and was ignored. We asked for the duty manager to say what had happened he just said sorry and said he would tell the cook, no offer to get another breakfast as he saw I hadn't eaten anything. We wont be returning to this hotel.

Review 42:The dinner was excellent the evening we arrived. The room was clean and comfortable.

Review 43:The bar was poorly presented with limited stock. A smile on the face of the barman would have helped to cheer the dismal corner.

Review 44:Friendly staff. Availability of gluten free food at dinner and breakfast.

Review 45:Far too much walking involved to get to the rooms. If you are elderly this is a problem. No wifi. Staff a bit slow to bring drinks even tho there were no other guests in the bar. Staff also forgot to include the ingredients that were to be in the meal. Called back in 2 hrs later as Fiancee had left her earrings in the room. They just said we didn't find anything, no attempt made to go to the room again to check or anything. Poor

Review 46:Manor styling

Review 47:Although there was on site parking there was a charge of £5 per night for guests. Although this seems to be the case with many hotels now I do not like the trend. I may not object so much if there was secure parking for my vehicle but as I understood it the public were able to park there also.

Review 48:The Hotel was characterful, clean and convenient to the Town. A very good experiance and would use again and would recomend the hotel

Review 49:Carpets were very unclean, old, beaten and dusty. Disagree with the car parking charge for the price of the room.

Review 50:Food was great. Facilities were a pleasant surprise. Staff were very helpful.

Review 51:The bed was extremel comfortable. The lounge was lovely with relaxing furniture. The breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. Restaurant food was good

Review 52:Long wait on Saturday night for main course 1 hour after starters, room needs a update I.E. TV far too small and old, fridge was warm and old, Windows date back to the 60's would be nice to have a few more special touches

Review 53:Food, location, spa and gym, bar area good service

Review 54:Can't fault tbh. Parking was a little challenge but not hugely so.

Review 55:Staff friendly and accom dating. Informed and service was first rate. Location for theatre and town centre was perfect.

Review 56:Food and the service was excellent. Spa and leisure facilities were very good. Bar and lounge areas were well appointed with comfy furniture and pictures in-keeping with the period of the manor.

Review 57:Disappointed in the spa, the relaxation room is not big enough, treatment was not for the full 30 minutes & felt was overpriced for the experience

Review 58:The staff were excellent and couldn't do enough for you & the hotel was very clean

Review 59:Sauna was out of action for both days of our stay. Toilet in room would not flush properly and despite reporting was not repaired.

Review 60:Excellent location close to Stratford town centre.

Review 61:Comfortable room. Excellent breakfast & wonderful restaurant staff. Reception staff not helpful though, didn't bother to help out when my wife was struggling with luggage. Other than this, we had a wonderful stay. Will certainly visit again.

Review 62:Shower in room was not as good as the swimming pool shower, decor was a bit dated and in places needed a touch up. Breakfast was a bit mediocre with low quality food.

Review 63:Spar facilities, spacious room and close location to town.

Review 64:Their was a loud noise outside of our room window which I believe was an extractor fan that kept us awake during the night.

Review 65:Nice hotel, good location, comfortable bed, nice breakfast.

Review 66:Quite tired grubby rooms in the main stay part of the hotel, bathroom could of done with a good deep clean. Pricey bar drinks and a musty/damp smell throughout.

Review 67:Great location! Short walk across the bridge and your right in the center of beautiful Stratford upon Avon. Very nice clean modern pool with steam rooms and a lovely spa on site. Lots of nice original historical touches in and around the main building. Attentive happy staff.

Review 68:We nearly cancel after reading so many bad reviews. We are so glad we didn't. we loved the whole weekend. Can't wait to go back.

Review 69:The Breakfast was piping hot and cooked to order. The choice of fruit breads, cerals etc. were very good. The pool etc. was great. We swam before breakfast, it was lovely.

Review 70:When booking-in there was a little confusion and a queue had formed. Although we were dealt with quickly, others had to wait some time.

Review 71:Good size room, with super king size bed. Breakfast had a good selection of ’help yourself’ food. Great location, minutes away from the historical sights in Stratford. Impressive looking building.

Review 72:Despite a long phone call explaining dietary requirements and booking dinner no record of booking when we arrived. Although manager dis sort all very quickly it was a bit stressful at the time. No decaf and some minor niggles with room service.

Review 73:Location perfect staff lovely

Review 74:Already somebody in the room allocated. Not the best start to any visit. Needs more TLC on the decor - corridor carpets very worn

Review 75:Location Spa Facilties

Review 76:Bad room to start - noisy and next to car park. Staff changed room for second night and gave us a better room, but why didn't they give us that to start with?

Review 77:Liked the spa and swimming facilities = ate in Restaurant on my birthday evening and enjoyed it.

Review 78:Too few staff. Long queue for breakfast 30mins. Once in 45mins for poor quality food. So many people complaining. No management available to sort it out. Staff struggled with the language and had been poorly trained

Review 79:Location that's all

Review 80:Reception staff did not speak adequate English and could not find our booking; it took at least 15 minutes to check in. Restaurent served limited food; selection did not change during our four day stay; but was very good quality. Bottles of wine were very expensive. Dining room staff bustled around and the layout of the dining room did not allow sufficient room for staff and guests to pass each other safely. Hotel bedrooms were too hot and despite air conditioning, the radiator on frost and the window open, the room was still too warm.

Review 81:Rooms were comfortable, car parking was great location was great. Food was very good quality. Bedrooms were well serviced, beds very comfortable. The bar was relaxing and well staffed with good service. Beautiful surroundings.

Review 82:The breakfast wasn't really all that. A Ramakin of scambled egg that's less than one egg. And Henry if you don't like earlies work nights.

Review 83:Location was excellent. Staff very proffesional and friendly. ( except grumpy at breakfast)

Review 84:I felt the rate was too expensive and did not know that what we paid did not include breakfast which meant another 35 pounds for each day we stayed.

Review 85:The facilities and staff were excellent. \the food was fabulous

Review 86:The room wasn't as clean as it could have been, on check in there wasn't any information given at all, the room cost a lot of money and I expected more. No butter put on the table for breakfast and the coffee was like dishwater

Review 87:The location was very good and the food was good

Review 88:All the staff were professional and lovely! Restaurant and bar excellent. Leisure facilities excellent. Location and grounds great. The old part of the hotel, original manor very well integrated with the new wing. Car parking.

Review 89:Dissapointed no dressing gowns no shower gel . Pre order bottle wine as it was partner birthday for room was not they on arrival . So had to ring to get them to bring up .

Review 90:Location was great . Room was nice bed very comfy .

Review 91:Ideal location - easy walk to see what Stratford on Avon has to offer. Lovely hotel and staff very friendly and helpful. Had a very nice meal in the hotel restaurant.

Review 92:Poor reception staff. Kept waiting both times and on departure was kept waiting for 15 minutes without acknowledgement when I was acknowledged I wasn't asked if I'd enjoyed my stay at all just to finish paying my bill and handed a receipt .

Review 93:Location And very quirky, nice building

Review 94:the decor needs a refresh. Carpets very worn. Bathroom dated and basic. Breakfast not very warm. Plates cold. Wouldn't class as a 4*

Review 95:Hotel was clean and staff friendly.

Review 96:The 'Spa' wasn't really much of a spa, there was a constant bad smell in the steam room and tiles falling off of the seats/walls. I would not have been happy if I'd paid to go to the Spa as opposed to getting it in with the hotel room.

Review 97:Hotel was nice, room was clean and tidy, although we didn't spend much time in it during our stay in Stratford. The restaurant looked nice and food did sound tasty but unfortunately we already had a booked table in a restaurant in the town centre. I would stay again if I ever revisit Stratford upon Avon.

Review 98:We were a large party celebrating my Fathers 80th birthday and the bar was very understaffed on the Saturday night. Also sandwiches ordered that night were not the best egg mayo without eggs and cheese and pickle with out cheese, but everything else about the stay was fabulous

Review 99:The staff in the beauty treatment rooms were fantastic as was Emma on reception of the treatment rooms, so helpful couldn't have asked for better treatment

Review 100:Receptionist didn't explain how to get to our room or where we had to go for breakfast. Rooms and corridors needed painting.

Review 101:Location was excellent. Hotel beautiful from front view.

Review 102:Slowness of service within Dining Room at breakfast and evening meal. Improved second day with a buffet breakfast. The evening a la carte menu showed promise but standard of food and taste was nothing special

Review 103:Comfort. Location. Ambience within the hotel. Spa facilities.

Review 104:The public corridors are run down and could do with attention - worn carpets. Also a bit narrow so passing guest from opposite direction difficult. A safety issue here, I think, in the case of an emergency. Poor planning.

Review 105:Perfect for what we needed for our stay in Stratford. The main part of the hotel seemed to be pleasant but we were in a 'modern' part - functional.

Review 106:Not cheap, and a couple of times when dining the hotel restaurant we felt slightly neglected.

Review 107:Great location for the town centre, very characterful building with helpful staff and good facilities.

Review 108:Beautiful historic building just a short walk into the centre of town. Bed was very comfortable. Bathroom had modern facities and was clean and fresh.

Review 109:The bedroom table had an layer of dust on it. The bathroom window was cracked there was hair all over the bath and floor and tiles were broke. They came and did the room again but only remade the bed did nothing about above. I ordered tea at Breakfast and never got it. Check in I told them I would be arriving early but was told on arrival I could not get into the room till 4 as they were cleaning it. The WIFI was poor not one my devices would connect with it.

Review 110:The grounds and hotel it's self were stunning. The main parts of the hotel were beautiful.

Review 111:No negatives.

Review 112:Location very convenient, a short walk over the river from the town. Staff all very friendly & obliging, room very comfortable (was in coach house).

Review 113:The corridor carpets looked a bit jaded - could do with being replaced.

Review 114:We were celebrating my husband's 80th birthday. The hotel was lovely and the staff were excellent - they treated us royally.

Review 115:The rooms are looking rather tired, and during my stay, the cleaning could have been better.

Review 116:The restaurant and its staff were very good. The location for the theatre at Stratford was very good, just a five minute walk away. There was plenty of parking.

Review 117:Disappointed re the booking process. I had booked a double room and when we arrived at the hotel they had me down as a single occupant of a double room despite me naming myself and my husband on the Booking.com website

Review 118:Location and friendly staff

Review 119:I felt the hotel is overpriced for what you get. The rooms where small and the hotel corridors leading to the rooms (and the rooms themselves) need a refurb.

Review 120:Great location, spa facilities Bed was very good.

Review 121:Room was not cleaned properly and beds not made properly. Food and drinks were overpriced, and breakfast in the room was virtually inedible, costing £17.50, plus £5.00 to bring the tray!

Review 122:Very friendly and helpful staff. Very little noise at night. Pleasant view from bedroom window.

Review 123:Sunday breakfast was a staff struggle. I had to eat my full English before any toast or tea arrived.

Review 124:Heritage room ambience most attractive. Lots of excellent parking. Location in relation to RST.

Review 125:Had a glass of wine in bar in the evening , poured the drink from three bottles two with small amounts in the other a new bottle , ithe wine was ok but not what I would expect at around £8

Review 126:Beautiful location ,lovely hotel with superb facilities .

Review 127:No lift to floors, too far from facilities, long waiting time to be seated/receive breakfast then someone else got our order and extremely expensive for what you get. Second fiddle to a wedding party. Couldn't get on WiFi. Better everything at Holiday Inn and better value for money.

Review 128:Impressive building on 1st impressions. Close to a wonderful town.

Review 129:I had booked expecting breakfast to be included in price as it was advertised, this proved not to be the case and ruined the overall impression, a real false economy on part of hotel

Review 130:Location and the overall facilities

Review 131:Feature room was noisy, no a/c, and all rooms too expensive. Car park charges were extortionate for a car park that had too many SMALL spaces.

Review 132:Staff were helpful

Review 133:Swimming pool changing rooms and showers not as clean as they could have been. We went at 8am and they looked like they had not been cleaned from the day before.

Review 134:We had an excellent stay at the Alveston Manor Hotel. The trip was for my husbands birthday which I put on the booking and the hotel left a card and a small box of chocolates in the room without me asking or paying. What a nice touch! Hotel is in an excellent location for all Stratford amenities and room was spacious with a huge bed (Classic King room). All staff were very friendly and the breakfast was excellent with the cooked breakfast cooked to order and not a buffet.

Review 135:From the picture, expected somewhere in countryside. This was not the case, and a petrol station across the road that was quite noisy. Also for £271 for one night (similar places I've stayed at ,were under half that price) thought breakfast was included - not so--- extra £15 each. Went to bar, and barmaid said take a seat and she would serve us. Sat there for a while, someone got served at bar (she'd forgotten us!), so left and went into town.

Review 136:Building itself was well presented, nice looking. Apart from expecting it to be in nice quiet rural area.

Review 137:I liked everything about this hotel, from it's location and close proximity to the town centre, to the friendliness of the staff and the phenomenal food in the restaurant

Review 138:Advertised free wi fi but unable to access via I cloud. Given phone number to ring by reception staff to resolve. A fellow resident ( young boy) told me need to have google chrome app. Swimming pool could be warmer but facilities great.

Review 139:Excellent location to town. Very comfortable bed.

Review 140:We didn't think the room was worth the money. Room dated & was very small. We thought it would be really nice to stay at this lovely manor but this wasn't the case. Photos are disieving
