Reviews for Rock Hotel
Review 1:W.C. in the bathroom much too small which is quite unnecessary as the overall space available is very good. Breakfast tray left on window sill corridor for 24 hours
Review 2:Very good quality bedroom an balcony with finest view in Europe. Very comfortable beds with high quality linen etc. TV channel availability excellent. Lounge , bar, terrace and restaurant (only took breakfast) all very good
Review 3:When we arrived at 2-30pm we knew we were early, but reception told us our room would be ready in 30minutes. One and a half hours later we got our key, the only black mark to a very enjoyable holiday.
Review 4:The view from the balcony, and the food was very good
Review 5:Glass door in toilet too near to face, okay for a midget but not a mature person w ith curves! No bath anymore! No hairdryer!.Noise due to flooring no longer being carpeted. Young staff who do not have the same finesse as the old stalwarts! The hotel needed a refurbishment, but sadly it has lost some of its charm. The hotel is still nice, but for me, there was a different vibe. Economy comes to mind.
Review 6:Updated lounge, smaller restaurant. Great to see that the windows and doors have been double glazed, as the metal frames had warped. Tea facility.
Review 7:Very poor staff interactions - night staff not trained to do check in which meant delays. No staff at breakfast for quite some time - nearly finished self service before someone appeared to serve coffee. Clear need for management and staff training
Review 8:Superb location and the hotel was clean
Review 9:It is a little bit expensive especially compared to hotels across the border in Spain.
Review 10:The Rock Hotel is located just above the Alameda gardens and a short walk from Main Street. Parking is provided and the views from the terrace or lounge are fantastic.
Review 11:Only served John Smiths in the bar. In a place where such bitters as Old Speckled Hen and London Pride freely available, this is unforgivable. Meant we had to forsake the hotel for a somewhat grotty pub nearby as my husband, like many an English man, is a bit fussy about his beer ...
Review 12:The reception staff were lovely. Very helpful when I got myself in a bit of a mess with some hire car documentation. The view from the balcony room overlooking the Straits to the Spanish mainland and Morocco superb, as it was from the breakfast room, which, incidentally, was rather good.
Review 13:Wifi is free, but not strong enough in the room. You have to move to the bathroom or install yourself in the sofa in the hall!
Review 14:I liked everything about this hotel: location, views, atmosphere, cleanliness, staff and a well appointed breakfast buffet - even if you don't go for the English grub!
Review 15:The staff weren't especially helpful. For the price, I was thoroughly disappointed with the lack of services. Beds were rock hard, sleeping on sofa or floor would have been more comfortable, no doubt.
Review 16:Beautiful property. Spacious room. Free parking was nice.
Review 17:It is not possible to get to the reception area by elevator.
Review 18:The view from our room was fantastic, Gibraltar, Spain and Africa, all in one. We liked the old world atmosphere, combined with the "fresh renovation" feel.
Review 19:We visited Gibraltar during New Year. Watch the fireworks from the top of the hill where the hotel is located was just amazing. Location was great. breakfast delicious and free parking. would recomend to everyone who is visiting Gibraltar
Review 20:Front desk staff were somewhat impersonal and did not make a huge effort even though it was post Xmas and before new year and the hotel was not anywhere near full. The restaurant and bar staff though were very friendly
Review 21:The view from the window over the harbour. The general feeling of the place, its quite special in many ways. The food in the restaurant was very good and would recommend it
Review 22:The Wi-Fi didn't work AT ALL in the room in spite of my having complained at once. When you're staying in a supposedly good hotel, where business facilities are provided, this seems rather lax and hard to stomach. Thank Gid that my Swiss provider includes some 4 G in my calling plan!!!
Review 23:Didn't like the Toilet enclosed in a box in the Bathroom (in the room we had) claustrophobic and anyone large would have trouble fitting in but Bathroom/ Shower fine.
Review 24:The Hotel has been refurbished to a high standard., especially the Lounge and Bar area. Views over the Bay are great. Staff 1st class and food -at lunch time (did not eat in the evening), in Lounge was good. Room as you would expect. Will definitely be going back some day. Easy Parking as well and free!
Review 25:There is a function marquee opposite the main front of the hotel. If they want to facilitate loud music, they might want to sound proof the windows for guests that want to be in bed before 1 am.
Review 26:The hotel is very endearing, has great history and character and provides a unique experience. The staff are attentive, facilities spotless and a there is a mosaic of photographs of famous guests that have stayed at the hotel just behind reception...John Lennon, Winston Churchill, Leslie Crowther!!!... You know you have made it when your picture is up in the Rock Hotel.
Review 27:Quality of food ( though at quite high prices ) much differing between starter, main and desert. Inconclusive kitchen; maybe no real chef who could set forth his individual style - or possibly one who very well could but is not allowed to do so ? Surely all of the personal work very hard, but with the same amount of work they surely could reach much better results if taught or advised properly ( or possibly if not suppressed by old time fashions of enterprise leading ? ). Very difficult judgement after only one night of stay - but possibly you better do take my advice to bring them really on for the future.
Review 28:Quite good location above the bay of Algeciras with some beautiful sidelook onto the strait of Gibralter from the room balcony. In the night the strait was very clear and offering a really splendid view onto the moroccan coast. Style british colonial hotel which is not bad by itself. Very clean. The personal absolutely nothing to complain about.
Review 29:There was no hot water for showering in my room. I had to change to other room to shower. It was very unconvinient.
Review 30:The staff are very nice. The location was good could see the sea view.
Review 31:Access for elderly to and from the reception area (no lift service to or from this level which is neither at road nor at general hotel level).
Review 32:Peace and comfort
Review 33:It's generally a bit worn and needs a refurb. The toiletries we used weren't replaced for the second night of our stay.
Review 34:Bedding and towels were good quality.
Review 35:Breakfast was expensive and the eggs powdered. Not nice and not good value. If you have time go eat at the angry fryer pub. Breakfast is a wow.
Review 36:My partner hit the shops and spent money so she was happy.
Review 37:For a 4-star hotel - breakfast could be better/fresher/more choice. Dinner wasn't great either. Also, given the alcohol is very cheap in Gibraltar, the measures were tiny and drinks expensive.
Review 38:Fabulous location and great views. Spacious room, very clean. Loved the balcony.
Review 39:Whoever designed the shower cubicle needs to think again - a tiny shower tray in a "cubicle" twice that size made it impossible to shower without flooding the bathroom. The hotel was "grubby" in places - almost every coffee jug I was served had a sticky handle and the room sink was never cleaned properly. And, as a single female traveller, I was advised NOT to lock my room door at night as the locks tend to jam! Anyone with dietary needs / allergies would have serious problems eating there - whilst they try to cater for your needs (I'm lactose intolerant) they don't always manage to understand what you're saying. And I didn't really expect this in a British speaking hotel at a British person - there should NOT be a language barrier!
Review 40:The car parking is very close to the hotel. The restaurant food was delicious in the evenings.
Review 41:The hallways had a new, hard floor which did not absorb the sound from guests and personnel at All. The door to our room did not close tight at the bottom. Result: Quite a noisy experience. The otter doors at our floor looked the same...
Review 42:The viewer. The restaurant.
Review 43:It's hard to walk there, because I have to walk uphill a long way. But not too far from main street.
Review 44:facilities are good, room is clean,I like the balcony with sea view.
Review 45:Not ideal for elderly people, very poor in that area. Staff not very informative. Would not go there again.
Review 46:Views were lovely. Seating area in the lounge was comfortable and the terrace outside was good
Review 47:not enough tea and coffee supplied in room, the cleaners need to be a lot more vigilant empty bottles and other rubbish left in room after cleaning, bathrobes only suitable for any one under a size 18.unfortunately the design of the shower was poor and flooded the bathroom on every use.
Review 48:Food in restaurant was fantastic, views great, comfortable bed, plenty of storage, nice sized rooms, lovely balcony.Great coffee.Even though I've said some negative things about the Rock I would go back again in a heartbeat.GREAT PLACE!!!!
Review 49:Unfortunately, there was problem with hot water overnight with arrangement for hot shower on different floor. Management responded by offering complementary dinner.
Review 50:Beautiful historic hotel, friendly polite staff, close to town centre and other attractions.
Review 51:I have said this before as with many hotels, the housekeeping lets it down. Lots of dust and not so well cleaned
Review 52:Lovely location and staff very good and nice and helpful
Review 53:The hotel was well located and in easy reach of the cable car up the Rock as well as the town centre and other attractions of interest to me; e.g. Significant historical and military sites.
Review 54:Lovely hotel, staff very friendly and helpful. Clean. Rooms very nice. Although we did not have time to use the pool it looked nice. It was really close (5 minute walk down hill) to the town. Quite hilly but you could always taxi back up. We walked it was a very nice walk. Near to the cable car to go up the rock.
Review 55:Nice hotel - helpful and friendly staff. There was a hot water problem but they moved us to a (slightly better) room without a quibble. Food and drinks OK - service good
Review 56:The only negative part of this hotel was the shower - the water took over 5 minutes to get hot and the pressure was very low so the shower was a little trickle.
Review 57:The hotel clearly has been recently modernised to a very high standard. Our standard double room was extremely spacious, as was the very modern and clean bathroom. The beding and towels were lovely quality. The view and location superb. We had both lunch, dinner and breakfast at the hotel and food was superb. Excellent overall.
Review 58:We were not told about the lack of hot water at check in, although they knew. No water on arrival, in the fridge in the room.every Hotel we have stayed at during 7 weeks travelling has bottled water in the room. Our room was not ready as we arrived before 2. Fine, but on return we could not use a very dirty Balcony. Yes the maid did come and clean it when we complained. The driveway needs attention as well.
Review 59:Nice views in a nice Hotel. Good breakfast. The staff were friendly.
Review 60:Little pockets of business meeting going on? Made us feel a bit uncomfortable. No WiFi! No hot water in our room?! We had to shower in another room one floor up!. At £105 a night without breakfast they took £15.00 off for our in convenience? I didn't feel this reflected our in convenience? My husband doesn't like to make a fuss so we left it at that?
Review 61:Lovely location. Very well presented. Large room warm n clean. Friendly staff.
Review 62:There was just the one remote for both tvs, it sometimes turned the other on which wasnt the best.
Review 63:Hotel was welcoming, very nice! Restaurant was lovely and food was gorgeous! Definitely be returning!
Review 64:The shower repeatedly stopped working. The engineer looked at it, shrugged his shoulders 'working fine'. The TV didn't work. There is a very bright green emergency exit - so bright and big, it actually keeps you awake.
Review 65:The bed was nice
Review 66:The beds weren't very comfortable - too hard
Review 67:Great views and in waking distance to Gibraltar town. Hotel was nicely decorated and very clean. Food in the restaurant was amazing.
Review 68:The entire hotel has very cheap floating laminate wood floors. They really distract from the upscale look and feel. Other than the bar/restaurant, there really weren't any features to speak of as it's a relatively small hotel.
Review 69:Location was good and the lobby bar and restaurant had a very nice feel to it. Balcony in the room was nice and the rooms were quite big.
Review 70:The batteries on the firealarm beeped every minute outside my room, indicating they should change batteries. I informed the staff but they did not change until the day after.
Review 71:The renovation of the Rock was longed for. Looked good! Nice and friendly personell.
Review 72:nothing to say perfect, will be back that is for sure.
Review 73:It was an amazing plesure to stay in this wonderful hotel, passed a wonderful experince, all the staff were just amazing for making my birthday and also an historical event to remember, would reccomend this hotel any day, the Rock Rocks, well done to everyone, and especialy the staff, you are an asset to the hotel, special mention to azizz, 30yrs at the hotel, well done Sir
Review 74:The initial climb up the hill That my fee was deducted fom my credit card by The Rocks four days before my arrival... NO other hotel has done this
Review 75:When I arrived exhausted after walking from La Linea and the final climb up the hill i was given a free pint!!! The view from my deck was so rewarding and the sunset to match
Review 76:Friendly helpful staff. Nice rooms well equipped though beds a bit firm for my preference. Well equipped, spotlessly clean and great views from the balconies which catch the afternoon and evening sun with views over 2 continents/3 countries. Very handy for the cable car
Review 77:Unfortunately our room wasn't cleaned at all the second day. However, when we told the staff we were given a 'top up' of teas and coffee and our room was cleaned the following day.The shower is poorly designed and floods the bathroom floor each time you use it.The breakfast was overpriced for what it was but a beautiful room to eat it in (just a pity the mature man who was managing was so grumpy!)
Review 78:The two receptionists were friendly and helpful. We were greeted with a complimentary sherry! The food for dinner was excellent. There was a good view from our balcony and we particularly enjoyed exploring the stunning botanical gardens opposite.
Review 79:Staff talking outside my bedroom at 07.30. I have never stayed in a hotel where staff were so present, at times I felt in their way. Had to wait for lift as a maintenance man was using it!. Asked to have shower checked, as I could not control heat, it was checked, I know because the floor was left wet with dirty foot prints on mat.
Review 80:The helpful reception staff on arrival, very attentive.
Review 81:Room poorly decorated and bathroom tiny and uncomfortable. Very noisy, poor double glazing, could hear vehicles, motor cycles all night. Arrived 9.30pm to be told restaurant closed. Only food available, ready made sandwiches or club sandwich with fries. (unpleasant taste to club sandwich). Told that breakfast was an additional £18 per person per day whether we had full or just continental. Hangers in wardrobe not wide enough to take a pair of trousers. Hotel lives in the past and needs to sort itself out. Just not good value at all.
Review 82:Convenient position
Review 83:This time we had a room with only a window not a balcony which was a shame and bathroom was a bit small, I struggled for places to put things, toiletry bag etc
Review 84:Really nice feel to the hotel, staff are great, within walking distance to town and free car parking.
Review 85:Lack of WiFi in Rm. 417
Review 86:Location, car parking availability, on site restaurant. Receptionist Maria helped out a great deal to make our stay fun, by recommending a great tour to Tangiers and Maria also helped to extend the date of our car rental, by contacting the rental company while we were on another tour on the 'rock'.
Review 87:while dinners and bar meals were excellent , breakfast was nowhere near the same standard.
Review 88:beautiful views over bay from room but really great from terrace with suitable refreshment.
Review 89:The food is rather ordinary - certainly nothing to write home about; breakfasts were boring - the same every day. Had to request towels, pillows and soap/shampoo after the first day. Stayed here 4 times but never a word of "welcome back"
Review 90:Location, views, decor, general ambience; lovely hotel
Review 91:A few ants in the room but staff tried to sort out the problem. Toilet was squeezed into very small space.
Review 92:Excellent breakfast. Very friendly staff. Lovely terrace/balcony overlooking the sea.
Review 93:my wife tripped in the boatanical gardens I had to get her injury treated at the hospital, the hill and steps then became a problem.
Review 94:room with balcony and view over the bay and tea on the terrace
Review 95:The views were extraordinary from the balcony! The rooms were wonderfully organized. The lounge/bar area also had phenomenal views. The staff was very professional. The internet was great too which I really needed.
Review 96:My wife needs a wheel chair so to get in to town is a short taxi ride. The bank is steep upto the hotel but it is not a major problem.
Review 97:The hotel room was an excellent size with a very nice balcony that overlooked the bay. The staff in the lounge bar were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent and staff very helpful. There is plenty of parking and it's free. The hotel is very close to Main Street.
Review 98:Just a little let down by some of the staff who seemed a little dour and slow perhaps because the weather was wet and raining...
Review 99:Great location. Great building and furnishings. Great food.
Review 100:The staff on desk was efficient but not especially friendly. A slightly more welcoming manner would be nice.
Review 101:Great location, balcony with city and water views, pleasant, comfortable room, had parking. An excellent driver escorted private tour of "the Rock" was arranged by the front desk at the last minute.
Review 102:We had two problems with our room which inspite of promises to rectify were never sorted out. In fairness the hotel deducted the cost of our dinner on Thursday evening (29th) by way of an apology. We were disappointed that breakfast was not included in the room rate as we spoke to two other guests who were paying the same rate per night as us and their breakfast was included.
Review 103:We liked the location and the views
Review 104:The hotel looked like it had had a recent refurbishment which was of decent quality but a little 'cheap' compared to what looks like a fabulous history over the years. The original art deco style evident from the buildings outside facade has been lost sadly and only lingers a little in the bar area.
Review 105:Location, position and view were superlative. I loved the view from the terrace off the dining room which would have been even more atmospheric on a warmer evening.
Review 106:On arrival, struggled up 2 flights of stairs with baggage to find that there was a luggage lift after all, we had to find it as receptionist didn't bother to mention it! Managed to flood the bathroom, obviously designed by an idiot. Air conditioning has a mind of its own. Breakfast stupidly expensive, hence a trip down the hill for a full English at less than half the price.
Review 107:Fabulous View, Gin & Tonic on the terrace for tea! Also loved the individual french press cafetiere supplied in the room.
Review 108:A little over priced. Only white wine available by the glass in the Lounge Bar was a very poor Rueda, expect better choice in 4 star hotel. Badly designed shower in otherwise excellent bathroom (water ran under shower door and flooded the bathroom floor).
Review 109:Comfortable, stylish hotel with spectacular views over Algeciras bay. Free parking. Good sized, revamped bedroom with comfortable beds and large sea view balcony. Ate in the Restaurant two nights - food and service very good on both occasions.
Review 110:Would have liked a bath. access to the hotel is quite steep.
Review 111:Friendly and very helpful staff, newly refurbished to a good standard. Great views. Excellent breakfast and food in general. Clean rooms.
Review 112:1. Food and drink was average, but the prices were very high. 2. Breakfast was £17.50 each on top of a room rate of £130 per night.
Review 113:1. Location and aspect. 2. Recently refurbished, pleasant ambiance. 3. Helpful and pleasant staff.
Review 114:Unfortunately there was quite a steep hill up to the hotel which was not really explained. An older couple of my wedding day guests certainly found this difficult. Not the hotel's fault, but should have been explained a bit more in the hotel website perhaps
Review 115:The staff were very attentive and as it was our wedding, they were extremely helpful, especially the Reception staff. I had an unexpected guest which they kept very secret and managed to arrange an extra corsage at very short notice! The room was lovely and obviously newly decorated. Unfortunately because we couldn't open the windows as the monkeys were around and I didn't want to lose anything, I couldn't quite work out the aircon for the bathroom which was the only internal room in the suite. Some basic instructions would be good, a leaflet left on the bed as you arrived might be a good idea as we were too excited to take everything in.
Review 116:Probably the smallest bathroom i have ever had in many years of travelling, you had to open the door step in around it and close it behind you, there was nowhere to place 2 toiletry bags and when you sat on the loo your head was hitting the wall in front of you overall a very poor bathroom for the room rate. also we only booked room only and they wanted £17.95 each for breakfast, we ate breakfast in town for £12.00 for 2 of us, i know its always more in a hotel, but trust me i cant eat £17.50 of food in a morning, this would have taken the room rate per night to £170.00 inc breakfast and its not worth it especially taking into account the bathromm which spoilt the whole stay. on the other hand the drinks in the bar were very reasonable £4.50 for a G&T for example.
Review 117:great view from the balcony, excellent bar area and fantastic staff
Review 118:The hotel flooring in hallways very noisy when when people walking through, could here from our room, also the cleaning cupboard was opposite our door so woke up very early morning with chatting noisy staff!!
Review 119:Lovely modern refurbished rooms, amazing views!
Review 120:Smoking allowed in the terrace restaurant, not good when eating. There is a designated smoking area at the front of the hotel. I complained on the first night but nothing done. The smoking rule is not applied. The terrace restaurant is within the hotel where no smoking is allowed. This let the hotel down !
Review 121:Room, public areas, dining room, swimming pool.
Review 122:Steep climb up to the main entrance - fortunately we arrived by car !
Review 123:Very friendly and helpful staff. Old world 'colonial charm. Lovely outside terrace with great views of the bay - excellent place for an alfresco breakfast before the heat of the day begins. Good standard and choice of items for breakfast. Excellent air conditioning with speed and temperature settings which worked in our room even when we were out. Slightly away from the town centre, but close enough to walk in. I loved the open-air swimming pool in its idyllic setting surrounded by palm trees and with views of the Gibraltar Rock at the back - it has a bar and serves tea too.
Review 124:Staff weren't very helpful, shower was broken from the wall and although refurbished the room was uninviting. We felt "form over function"
Review 125:Very comfortable beds And good food in the restaurant
Review 126:No bad experiences.
Review 127:Very much liked the location, the room size and quality and closeness to Main St and the centre of town, also free parking on the hotel property.
Review 128:The rooms are quite small, the food and customer service were of a lower standard than expected also the drains are quite smelly.
Review 129:The location is perfect and the views from the balcony were great.
Review 130:I had some issues with the service in the bar area which the manager did try to fix for me but it didn't really improve. Strange as service in other places eg reception and the pool bar was fine. Having said this - the manager was very good at listening and responding to the issues.
Review 131:Nice location and excellent views (try and get the 4th floor). Staff at reception and management staff were excellent. Has parking. I had some issues and spoke to the manager who was very responsive and did his best to address them. I would go back but I would always drink/eat somewhere else.
Review 132:The only problems we had is that it's located up a very steep hill and was very difficult because of our ages to walk to the hotel from downtown Gibraltar. The bus service was excellent as was the taxi service but what was surprising is the hotel had no courtesy bus.
Review 133:Excellent Facilities food and sfaff.Everyone was most helpful.
Review 134:We loved everything about this hotel. Very clean, fab location and amazing views. The staff were very professional and we were made to feel very welcome. We got married in gibraltar and chose this hotel for our stay.
Review 135:The staff are very helpful nothing was to much trouble an example of this is that one of my friends could not find anything he like on bar menu and the staff made him what he wonted
Review 136:The barman didn't know how to prepare a gin fizz!!
Review 137:Excellent evening meal on the terrace overlooking the harbour. The whole experience of the food, wine and ambiance was really good.
Review 138:Value for money. Hotel has "Old World Charm" but is not out dated as it has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. Afternoon tea on the terrace or at the poolside was a treat to look forward to.
Review 139:The only small thing is the hotel is on quite a steep hill and its a hard walk from the town.
Review 140:Very clean throughout, excellent breakfast, staff very helpfull nice pool area.
