Reviews for The Golden Fleece Inn
Review 1:We stayed in rm 18 and the room had a bad smell. Also every time the toilet was flushed or even when turning the tap on, the toilet macerator is so loud that it wakes everyone up and causes the floor to vibrate. The restaurant food wasn't that nice either unfortunately. We went as it was the only place around that was serving food just after Christmas, however we didn't finish end up finishing the food.
Review 2:The room, bed and sheets were clean, wifi, TV included, and had parking outside. The room decoration was nice.
Review 3:Expensive. Small room. Loose taps. Creaky floorboards. Noisy toilet flush. Poor mixer taps.
Review 4:Clean. Warm. Linen and towels excellent. Toiletries and tea and coffee facilities very good.
Review 5:No staff to greet us when we arrive. We had to wait for her to return from the Post Office. The Christmas lights banged against the window all night. The toilets were very noisy indeed...kept us awake all night. When we voiced our complaints the response of the young lady at the desk was: "Oh, ok" and that was it!
Review 6:Location was good.
Review 7:Beds were too small for me (I am 6'1" and my feet dangled off the end). Rooms & plumbing were a bit noisy, but OK. Breakfast was served late, which was a problem as we were on a tight schedule.
Review 8:Good location for our plans. Well-stocked bar and excellent food. Staff were very friendly.
Review 9:Room location - noisy. Fire doors were not fire doors & u could hear every word of your neighbour & everyone else's comings and goings. Curtains to thin especially as bright street lights directly outside of window. Loo seat did not fit, radiator did not work, sheet did not fit bed (no mattress protector) but reported these to staff and they immediately reported to management.
Review 10:STAFF awesome bunch went above & beyond role. Courteous policy 11/10 I like the village & coziness of the place log fire too ???
Review 11:Bed uncomfortable, tv wasnt working, floors uneven. Reception desk was in a different building and the place very dark with a strong unpleasant odour
Review 12:It was very clean
Review 13:We were completely surprised when we arrived. We had a suite that was decorated to the highest standard. We will definitely be booking at some time in the near future.
Review 14:the price, the fact we were not in the pub but another building. the lack of cleaning, the useless coffee machine that the cups did not fit under.the £70 I eventually did pay, should have been £35.
Review 15:Nothing
Review 16:There was a good choice of meals, though they seemed a little expensive for pub food. Still, they served food until 9 which was handy. I got woken up at 7am by the cleaning lorry outside sucking up leaves in the square outside, but you could ask for a room at the back if that is likely to be a problem.
Review 17:Nice down-to-earth place on a beautiful square with cosy and friendly pub, serving food, and a lovely little garden out the back. The room was comfortable and had tea-making facilities. The Spar shop opposite was handy, since Tremadog is a small place. Buses right in the square were convenient, and the location is beautiful.
Review 18:restaurant seats, tables and décor were very tired . Had to swop seat due to it being broken. At Breakfast had an orange that was rotten inside! not all shown on breakfast menu available. TV had no signal for half of our stay.
Review 19:location , and evening food ok. Staff very friendly
Review 20:We did not stay for breakfast. It was a somewhat pricey and we uses the excellent station bar/café at the Harbour station
Review 21:Comfortable well equipped room in a pleasant old fashioned village
Review 22:The restaurant next door is quite busy so the parking was an issue.
Review 23:I loved the scenery around the Golden Fleece. It's on a pretty square with mountains all around.
Review 24:I would have preferred to stay in the main building and not across the street, not much fun going to breakfast if it was raining.
Review 25:The place was quiet and well situated to get away when travelling about. And the whole atmosphere was one of calm efficiency, and the staff were extremely good.
Review 26:No WiFi or TV in my room working. Probably due to building works. Luckily I liked the radio station the builders were listening to as I could hear it as if in my room. Generally though good stay.
Review 27:I arrived very late as at a wedding but staff has kindly suggested the key box option which worked well. Staff did best to be as helpful as possible. They had yo deal with computers on go slow so check out was longer than planned but again came up with alternative and sending by email my receipt of payment. Thanks to Sian and No (I think this is how he spelt his name) Thank you to the whole team
Review 28:towels could be whiter, and it smelled a bit the humidity but you get easily use to it
Review 29:We were on the appendix building. The room was nicely decorated, well restored. There was body cream with the furnished toiletries. In the center of tremadog and 15min from portmadog center.
Review 30:No chair to sit on that was comfortable. Bathroom very cramped with noisy plumbing.
Review 31:Location in a small village square with choice of places to eat and a shop. Very quiet.
Review 32:Very dirty room outdated no hot water in sink shower very hot or cold windows opened above entrance to pub where locals stood and smoked so room smelt of cigarettes the bar was full of very old dusty hops smelt and worn out inneed of a compleat refit
Review 33:Dreadful modern decor in room and quite dusty. No ventilation in bathroom meant bedroom steamed up when the shower was used.
Review 34:Lovely old building full of character. Good menu choice for evening meal and well cooked/presented.
Review 35:Bedroom door was impossible to lock. Spent around 20 minutes trying to lock it until someone else who had the same problem had figured it out (lock from inside first). Tea and coffee tasted horrendous.
Review 36:The staff were very friendly and helpful, the evening meal was splendid, the ambiance of the whole establishment was excellent, would highly to recommend to everybody
Review 37:Beautiful room with a huge and comfy bed. Staff were wonderfully friendly and the meal we had in the bar was delicious. Would definitely stay here again.
Review 38:We were located in the refurbished extension (the Royal Madoc Hotel) in a room on the second floor not really large enough for the bed. The real criticism is reserved for the noise (own room and others) emanating from the Saniflow plumbing each time a chain was pulled, tap was turned on or sink/ shower emptied. This made sleep very difficult indeed
Review 39:We still had fond memories of the Golden Fleece Inn from a year previously, hence the return
Review 40:I wouldn't say we had a bad experience but the wait for food in the restaurant at night was very long, I'm not sure if they were busy or understaffed but we waited almost an hour after being seated for our starter to arrive and then after we finished the starter it was another hour for the main course to be served, we would normally have just a bottle of wine with our meal but we ended up having a bottle in between courses.
Review 41:The Staff where friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and comfortable. The food was good.
Review 42:All ok
Review 43:About 2 miles out of town, adequate bus service for those arriving on public transport. Room actually in adjacent hotel, but full facilities available. Friendly welcome and relaxed atmosphere.
Review 44:My room was not cleaned on the last day -no real problem - but the room drinks (Coffee/Milk/Bottled Water) had run out - it was rectified after reporting it
Review 45:Welcome and general attention was very good A pleasant old style Pub with accommodation in an interesting area
Review 46:The double bed was two devans zipped together which was uncomfortable until we turned it round. Wi-fi was slow-ish, although very usable, and I expected that in this location.
Review 47:Very lovely decor in the room, great restaurant downstairs, friendly helpful staff. Located directly on the (small) town square right by the bus stop, with sundries and cash available at the post-office opposite. Really didn't take long to walk from the train station even though technically it's in the next town.
Review 48:1. On arrival I noticed that breakfast was apparently not available before 0830, which was a little later than I would have liked, particularly as the checkout time was quoted as 0800 onwards. I asked whether it could be served earlier, but was told this was not possible. The next morning in a drawer in my room I found a note stating that breakfast could be served before 0830 if this was requested before 2100 the previous evening. On going down to breakfast at 0830 sharp, I found other guests already eating, and queried the situation with the member of staff who had told me early breakfast was not possible. He seemed defensive and was unable to explain his statement. On checking out I mentioned this to a different member of staff and was told I had been misinformed. He cancelled the £10 charge for breakfast, which more than made up for the problem. 2. The hotel is advertised as being in Porthmadog, but it is actually in the village of Tremadog, about a mile to the north. (This is where the picture of the market place was taken - not in Porthmadog). A mile is not much if you're travelling by car, but it could be unpleasant if you're arriving by train (as I was) and the weather is adverse. Fortunately this wasn't the case, but I felt I had been slightly misled about the location of the hotel.
Review 49:A good, quiet clean room at a reasonable price for the type of accommodation, but my room was in an annexe, 'The Madog Rooms'. This had at one time been a separate hotel and felt a little isolated.
Review 50:Unable to connect to wi-fi due to poor signal start time for breakfast at 0830 too late and was unable to partake.
Review 51:Good food for evening meal. Room good, comfortable bed
Review 52:The bedroom was quite small. We are used to king size bed and this one was just double so didn't sleep very well. The carpet had lots of bits on as if it was not hoovered for sometime. The room was facing the main road and some of the pub customer were rather loud. Even tho it looked newly decorated there was a strange smell present. The shower not very powerful. Missing toilet paper.
Review 53:Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was very good. Good location with many attractions available in short drivining distance. free refreshments avail (mineral water, biscuits, tea, coffee, milk). Nice furniture, bay window, towels. Free shampoo, conditioner and soap.
Review 54:Just the waste disposal noise from the rooms but not a massive issue
Review 55:The staff are fabulous, the pub menu is good home cooked fayre & the bed comfy
Review 56:I couldn't find the tv remote anywhere in the room and when I wanted too watch tv in the afternoon I couldn't ask any one because the reception is shut for the several hours. and by then I got fed up of waiting so I had to find another way to occupy myself for the afternoon.
Review 57:Well the location is in a very good position and it was a friendly welcome. Plus the building I think was we'll looked after too. (Structured)
Review 58:Nothing was bad, but the room was small, newly decorated so smelt weird. No radiators so the room was freezing. Had a convection heater but I just didn't understand why no heating. It was freezing when you got out the shower!
Review 59:Nice decor in room, lovely bar and nice food.
Review 60:The heating was on when we arrived, which in February is fine, but during the night it was too hot so just got up & turned it off (when I worked out which way to turn it - arrows would be helpful) The meal, bearing in mind it's a pub, is over priced & one dish had to be sent back due to not being cooked thoroughly (this was done straight away, no questions asked). Neither is the breakfast included, extra payment for this was required, therefore making the cost of the room a bit OTT. Having said all this, due to the comfort & cleanliness, I would stay again!
Review 61:Clean, comfy, quiet & quaint, a few good words to describe a village 'inn'. Parking accessible with a friendly welcome. Room was better than expected. Tea, coffee etc was plentiful & good to see bottled water! The pub is of an old fashioned character which is a pleasant change to the "weather spoons" popping up all over the place!
Review 62:Cold room had to wedge window with cardboard catches not working .Wallsso thin you could hear every sound from bathroom next to us not pleasantNo where to put anything in the bathroom no shelves. No phone tv arialloose .The whole room has been done on the cheap .I stay in lots ofhotels this is the first time I felt a real need to complain .Had thebill reduced 50% The room was so called the executive but certainly wasnot would have been happier at the Travel lodge would have had a warmerand less noisy night .
Review 63:Location good and very good restaurant next door
Review 64:The black "gothic style" furniture in the bedroom.
Review 65:The location. The homeliness of the Inn. The food was good, as were the selection of real ales and wine.
Review 66:Nothing to do with the Inn but we didn't realise how far out of Porthmadog, Tremadog was. We arrived by train and there were no taxis at the station! Shock! Horror! But we were saved by a very friendly local lady who told us what we should do, as in catch the bus. We were standing at the bus stop and the bus arrived within 5 minutes. Later we enjoyed walking around Tremadog and into Porthmadog (not that far really but with bags a bit of a stretch).
Review 67:The room was surprisingly comfortable with added luxury in the shape of gorgeous towels and a generous supply of toiletries. It was very warm, too warm in fact but the radiators were easily turned off. It was quiet and we slept well. The staff were friendly, very helpful and the food was good! We very much enjoyed our one night stay.
Review 68:Where do I begin.. On the day of arrival, we were taken to a "hotel across the road" - Royal Madoc Hotel which felt a little strange.. We were explained that "nicer rooms" are here. We received keys for hotel's fron door and for our room- it felt quite creepy with no other live beings on site (ok, maybe we should put it down to the season?) however coming back from our dinner in the pub, we have noticed a light in one of the windows.. The room looked cheaply made, with mirror furniture and horrendous flowery wallpaper- but this is just my personal taste, some might find it beautiful. Bathroom was small and again, cheaply made, with loud macerator coming up everytime you flush the toilet or try use the shower. We have read about Free Wifi before booking this hotel which unfortunately where to find- it came up on my iphone once for about 5 seconda and was nowhere to find for the rest of the stay. Our TV in the room was also useless feature of the room as channels were freezing continuously. We have reported all issues to the staff and were promissed that someone will look into it.. (probably one day) Our food at Fleece Inn restaurant was not that great either.. small portions and overpriced. Paying £20 for the maincourse you would expect at least something to fill you up- or chef's masterpiece.. well neither was served.. (maybe, again, were are just spoiled with choice in London) Their local ale was superb, so as the tee&coffee facilities in the room- probably the best what we will remember from this stay in Golden Fleece Inn.
Review 69:We have booked Fleece Inn as it was close to our main destination- Mount of Snowdon- well, reletively close. We were driving and so it was pleasant and picturesque drive. Staff was very helpful and simply amazing.
Review 70:My mum is disabled and access was difficult the stairs to the room were steep. The drinks in the pub were expensive. Breakfast was not included and was 10 pound per person. The young man who checked us in said I had already paid half of the bill when I booked, I was delighted and went on to spend that money over the weekend thinking I had bonus money to spend, my own fault for not double checking. This turned out to be untrue, the full bill still needed paying which put a downer on the trip as we checked out, unfortunate mix up but not the end of the world!
Review 71:Myself and my sister stayed here with our parents as a bank holiday break. A lovely little piece of the world. Tremadog is just next to Portmadog and is a lovely seaside village. The guesthouse was well decorated, clean and comfortable. The adjoining pub is nice as is the other pub opposite. The staff were friendly, the hot chocolate, coffee, tea and biscuits were a lovely touch. The highlight was the restaurant Y Sqwar which is next to The Golden Fleece was one of the best meals I have ever had! Overall a very successful stay and we will be returning!
Review 72:We were not made aware that our booking at the Golden Fleece entailed our staying in their annex hotel `The Royal Madoc` across the road. The place is undergoing restoration and we got the feeling we were staying in someone`s spare room. I feel that there should be a reduced tariff for this inconvenience. Our room smelt of sweaty socks... very strongly. In the Fleece the food was good but there is a raised area in the restaurant, entering from the street it is very dark and a lady had tripped over it and an ambulance had to be called. I also tripped and two others tripped after me. Our table was next the the gents toilet and it was also the loo for the pub so we had a continuous procession of guys going to and from the toilet, some of which were still `adjusting their dress` as they came out. Not a pretty sight when you are eating. It was a busy day with the village fair on outside the pub so most of them seemed to be using the pub toilet. I did make comment about the table positioning when I checked out the the reaction was one of indifference. I would like to stay there again but I am not sure if the quality of the hotel matches the cost, considering the tariff did not include breakfast.
Review 73:I enjoyed being back in the village I lived in 20 years ago. The food in the hotel was good and the bed was comfortable
Review 74:musty smell in the annex where our room was located, restaurant was too dark for our liking, no dedicated self serve coffee carafe at bkfst.
Review 75:close to Porthmadog and the narrow gauge railways
Review 76:Food over priced, very small amounts, but good, We did notice certain bar staff( mind you only 1 on)made tourists wait to be served when a local guy gave him the nod, when the bar was 3 deep, very off putting when you pay a lot of money to stay there. Forgett about wifi youve got no chance there
Review 77:Fantastic location, peacefull, rooms well equipped
Review 78:Turning the shower on activated a tractor engine above our ceiling :S Not much around this way and the transport links to the base of Mount Snowdown aren't great If looking for a place to stay for hiking Snowdon check out Beddgelert
Review 79:Staff
Review 80:Not having hot water in the bathroom until after the second request. If the pilot light keeps blowing out - FIX IT!! Bed not made after first night. Over-priced accommodation.
Review 81:Food was brilliant. Restaurant and bar staff, likewise. Not cheap, but we willingly paid for the good value.
Review 82:Furniture thick with dust. Only 2 small hand towels provided. No hot water. Shower too small. Service in the bar and restaurant inadequate. The manager was obnoxious when I complained to him.
Review 83:the bed was clean and comfortable.
Review 84:No TV reception over the five days, unable to access WiFi. Long, long wait for breakfast although good when finally arrived.
Review 85:Room was nice as was the newly refurbished shower room. Lovely location.
Review 86:It's a pub and I like pub/hotels. Good selection of real ales, food was staple fare of good quality not gourmet but good. Bi-lingual (Welsh-English) staff very helpful. Tremadog is quite small but historic. Maybe slightly over-priced but it IS holiday season. Would look at it again.
Review 87:No hot water and no toiletries at all. Not even soap, (which we had to buy ourselves). Hot water restored after informing reception staff next day. Also, when informing the bar staff that their beer was not good, we got the reply 'I'll tell the manager'. Nothing else was done. We used the Union Inn after that (pub across the road).
Review 88:Location was lovely. Room was nice.
Review 89:Bathroom fittings gradually broke during 3 day stay; loo roll holder, then loo seat, then vanity mirror that flashed on and off. Each set of lights in the hotel had one bulb not working - only one bedside light out of two, and same for each pair of wall lights on the landing stairs and hallway. The walls are very thin so the next door neighbour's conversation are clearly heard, and the blind is not adequate letting in lots of light which along with road noise woke us early each morning and left us tired. Overall easy things to fix, but gave a poor impression. Didn't complain at time as don't want to make a fuss and find a maintenance guy in the room when we got back wanting a snooze in the afternoon as we were that knackered.
Review 90:Very clean, nice staff.
Review 91:The room was very comfortable and beautiful and we liked it very much. Best thing about it was the Pub, the food was really delicious! All in all it was a very nice stay!
Review 92:Poor breakfast for (£9) room looked like it was under construction, illfitting front door, hole in plasterwork, dusty furnature, entrance dirtyand unpainted, bathroom dirty and, stood on plastic top fromcomplementory shampoo bottle in shower that had been left from previousoccupant. Also no hot water in hand basin. The bar area was very dark,at breakfast there were workmen walking through dining area, also strongsmell of bleach, for £220 pounds for 2 nights,I find this extortionatefor such a poorly appointed hotel.WILL Not stay there again, totalyoutrageous rates be warned !!!!!!!
Review 93:Location evening meal
Review 94:We were put in rooms in an annex across the road from the pub . When we entered it smelled musty but even worse to come , when I entered my room (8) it stunk of dogs . We were told that breakfast was at 8.a.m , we were still standing out side at 10 past . As we had an appointment at 9.am we had to leave breakfast when staff finnaly arrived . Checking out was a joke , I had requested separate bills x 2 , this seemed to be a problem with the reception ? Finaly reception ran out of ink and had to send me receipt via e.mail . All this for £85.00 , 4 star ???
Review 95:No hot water in the wash basin but in fairness we forgot to report it on the 1st day and didn't bother to report it on the day we left. No shower cap in bathroom, perhaps I should have brought one. Curtains falling down from curtain rings and the curtains were very flimsy for bright mornings. 5 p.m. check in far too late although as we arrived on Sunday we were able to check in as the pub was opened. Monday to Friday The Golden Fleece is closed from 2.30pm- 5.00pm, hence the 5pm check in. We were late making our reservation and accepted the nightly rate but I feel the cost of the room was high for what was fairly basic accommodation.
Review 96:The biggest, most comfortable bed ever... Very helpful staff.
