Reviews for Woodland House Hotel

Review 1:Shame about building site next to hotel as main part of hotel has some nice features.

Review 2:Loved the log fires in hall and bar. My circumstances over Christmas were difficult and the staff were extremely kind and helpful - and welcoming of my wee dog. Breakfast was very good

Review 3:Nothing

Review 4:Really large and comfortable room and the staff very friendly including the owner George and his wife who took the time to give us some excellent advice on the area and also advice on our route north.Really friendly.

Review 5:A fair way from town and tourist attractions but at least food was provided for breakfast & dinner

Review 6:1) Quiet location - lovely garden 2) Could open a window for fresh air 3) Food available for breakfast & dinner if required 4) Staff friendly 5) Clean & good sized room

Review 7:bar and dining room were a bit cold, would have been nice if the real fire had been lit.

Review 8:staff very friendly, couldn't have been more helpful. food excellent and good value. rooms very plush and the internet actually works in the bedrooms.

Review 9:The beautiful room grounds and the peace and quiet. The helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. I arrived late and the staff member on duty organised some hot food. I was starting work late and was allowed a very late check out. The veggie breakfast was good.

Review 10:Our room needed more free-standing lights with the lack of a ceiling hung central light.

Review 11:A peaceful little hotel, well maintained both inside and out with friendly staff (one a little OTT), and good food.

Review 12:Very pleasant surroundings and more than helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Food very good. Ate in restaurant both nights of our stay. Very well appointed room and lovely bathroom.

Review 13:The staff made us very welcome.Simon greeted us and showed us to our room and made us feel welcome for the whole of our stay. The dining room staff were friendly and our room was amazing!

Review 14:Not a bad experience but the fact that their is a possible extension being built on the side of the house rather spoils the overall view (Hidden by a tree on the website view).

Review 15:The location and style of the house. Refurbished room with a superb bathroom. Food very good and staff very helpful.

Review 16:Lack of basic amenities for comfort and safety in bed and bathroom area. Entrance view of pantry / kitchen when we expected a Reception Area. Evidence on money being spent on decor when basic safety ignored in bathroom no handle or slip may.

Review 17:Location peaceful

Review 18:TV signal was poor, not offering all of freeview. internet connection was slow in the room.

Review 19:Friendly staff, made you feel very much at home. Beautiful grounds. Recommend.

Review 20:The new partly built premises, which will no doubt be an asset to the hotel but could put travellers off, if when built was a source of noise (loud).

Review 21:Very nice hotel, excellent room with ample storage. The staff were excellent and friendly. Food was very good I would recommend this to anyone staying in the Dumfries area.

Review 22:Wifi didn't work in my room, which was inconvenient, but it worked in the reception area.

Review 23:Spacious, well equipped. The sun shone into my room and everything looked bright and cheerful and welcoming. The food was good. Car Parking was excellent

Review 24:When renovations are finished it will probably be a lot more expensive but at this time it was very much a case of value for money. Staff very friendly and professional.

Review 25:While the bedrooms were in excellent condition the rest of the hotel is a work in progress and mobile and wifi signals very poor.

Review 26:Rooms very comfortable and spacious obviously newly refurbished. Food very satisfactory.

Review 27:I stayed in the hotel bar on my night of arrival, I found the lounge quite uncomfortable the chairs and tables are quite out dated. I had planed to stay in the hotel and relax in the bar the two nights I stayed but found the one night was enough. It was a bit dull and lacked a bit of ambience. I spent the second night of my stay in my room.

Review 28:I liked the comfort of the bedroom. The staff were very approachable. The location was peaceful and quiet.

Review 29:although there were plenty of plugs, there were none near the mirror, to enable me to use the hairdryer. there was not much pressure in shower but this did not upset us too much.

Review 30:The staff were very pleasant and welcoming, always happy to help. The room was lovely. Food was excellent value for money.

Review 31:Function on whilst we there there. Moderate domestic outside - first thing we saw/heard as walking to the front doors :D

Review 32:Comfortable and clean rooms. Firework display free of charge (there was a wedding on). No noise from function etc.

Review 33:Slightly expensive for a small place like Dumfries

Review 34:Hotel room was spotless and quiet. Lovely comfy bed and beautiful crisp white bedding. Gorgeous bathroom too! Can't fault!

Review 35:The most disappointing aspect of our stay was the Sunday Roast Special, this turned out to be a TV microwave meal. The rest of the food from the ordinary menu was freshly cooked and looked very good. I was extremelt disappointed with the special.

Review 36:The Suite we booked was well furnished and the bedroom and bathroom were newly refurbished to and excellent standard.

Review 37:The excellent accommodation was rather let down by the food. The evening meal was a traditional 'roast', i.e. slices of meat in gravy: OK but a bit school-dinner-ish. Breakfast was good when it came, but service was very slow. The orange juice ran out, there was no marmalade was to be seen, and it was hard to attract anyone's attention (to be fair, I think they had problems on that day).

Review 38:The bed was very comfortable, and the bedroom was large.. The bathroom was immaculate and of a good size.

Review 39:The bed, not comfortable. The abandoned extension adjacent to the property, finish the project or pull it down. It is an eyesore on what is otherwise a lovely place.

Review 40:The price! Good value for money.

Review 41:Food was a bit average, resonably priced though

Review 42:Large bedrooms, reasonable facilities. God to see that it looks like they are doing work to improve the grounds etc.

Review 43:Building an extension just now so grounds a little disrupted in some areas.

Review 44:Large grounds for walking dog. Lovely large new bathrooms. Spacious comfortable rooms.

Review 45:Very friendly staff and a really nice breakfast. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. The hotel is in a nice secluded quiet area, ideal for a nice quiet break.

Review 46:Beautiful room. Very comfortable in everway. The food was simple but delicious, with good helpings. Evening meals were very reasonably priced. Staff were friendly and helpful at all times.

Review 47:Friendly and helpful staff, clean and comfortable room and nice food. We stayed twice at the Woodland House and would certainly stay again if we're traveling to Scotland via Dumfries. Recommended.

Review 48:The hotel is set in beautiful grounds, and is a quiet and relaxing place to stay. Staff are very friendly and made us welcome as soon as we arrived. Food is very good and excellent value for money, especially the Sunday Special menu.

Review 49:I am a ceoliac and while I take an assortment of things with me there is always the chance I am given something that contians gluten. However, I was ok staying here, but would have liked more choice over breakfast, very gluten unfriendly.

Review 50:Our room was a suite and was really beautiful. We have been in a lot of 5 star hotels, but this was the first one with fresh flowers in the room - it was really lovely.

Review 51:The hotel is not run as a hotel. It is friendly and efficient but more like a B&B on a grand scale with limited staff and a bar that serves food. There is a building site adjacent to the main house where they were building an extension but obvioulsy all work stopped a few years ago. Areas of the house such as the foyer toilet were clearly in disrepair and in need of work or are a work in progress. .

Review 52:Friendly greeting and really helpful staff and the house and grounds. Also liked the modern, comfortable and clean hotel room with large bathroom, iorning board, tea and coffee. .

Review 53:Public rooms are a little tired and the shell of what will be the new function room a blot in the landscape at the moment but did not impact us at all

Review 54:Modern large bedroom and excellent bathroom. Lovely old building and beautiful gardens. Very friendly and welcoming

Review 55:We had a bar meal in the evening and it was very good value , good varieties to suite all tastes . The staff were great even with a function and the restarant full.

Review 56:Partly built leisure facility a bit of a blot

Review 57:Lovely room, good food at reasonable prices, friendly helpful staff. Plenty of free parking and close to Dumfries park and ride. Very pleasant quiet location and grounds, would definitely return. Lots of places to visit fairly locally.

Review 58:Unsightly building work. Proposed extension at side of building.

Review 59:Room, food , friendly staff and most of all great value for money. Will stay again without a doubt

Review 60:Sorry to say I can find no negative with this excellent hotel

Review 61:Staff were very efficient and friendly. Food was excellent. Room great, bed comfortable unable to fault will recommend to our friends.

Review 62:Been in many hotels on my travels this one is the best the staff are 100 % very helpful food good rooms perfect will be staying again many thanks to staff and management

Review 63:Arrival, nobody at reception for 10 minutes. No TV, just static. This was resolved then went down again 30 minutes later for the night. No Wi-Fi, signal was poor when it worked briefly for about 20 mins. Lots of unsightly building works - no mention on this prior to arrival.

Review 64:The staff, I only saw 2 members of staff but both were helpful, friendly and very accommodating when possible. Supplied an ethernet cable as Wi-Fi was down.

Review 65:Some major decorating and refurb going on when I arrived - hadn't been made aware of this before booking.

Review 66:Big spacious bedroom and bathroom - well appointed and comfortable.

Review 67:nothing

Review 68:room standard excellent friendly staff basic but varied menu with specials board which tasted great good base quiet rooms despite party on premises third visit to this hotel

Review 69:The bedroom and en-suite bathroom were first class. Comparable to many of the 4 & 5 star hotels that I've stayed in when on business. The staff were very friendly, food was excellent value and the food service was very fast.

Review 70:Not a lot to do around the local area but the staff, food and bar more than make up for it.

Review 71:Amazing people. Very friendly and pleasant staff. The food was excellent. Highly recommend a stay at this hotel.

Review 72:Heating a bit insufficient for size of room, somewhat chilly. Missed having room fridge and trouser press or iron which would expect for star rating / price. Overall though very good.

Review 73:Setting, furnishing, space. Generally comfortable. Very clean and staff welcoming and helpful.

Review 74:The staff were brilliant. The room was modern and clean. The location was convenient. Anybody expecting a michelin starred meal is going to be disappointed however dinner and breakfast were perfectly fine and a step up from generic pub chain food.

Review 75:Old fashioned hotel and furnishings very cold corridors and room not much warmer no sky sports and TV very small and not a great picture free wifi was a joke couldn't even get a mobile phone signal let alone wifi

Review 76:Excellent food and plenty of it

Review 77:There wasn't anything we didn't like about our stay at the woodland House.

Review 78:we loved the whole stay at this family run hotel, from the beautiful building ,to the lovely room, great staff. Could not of asked for more. So impressed I will be returning for another relaxing stay.

Review 79:weather but cannot blame hotel for that, husband not to keen on local brew

Review 80:Staff very efficient and helpful, food excellent bedrooms very good also bathroom large and luxurious

Review 81:Breakfast too early especially over new year. No amenities other than bar. Lack of vegetarian choice on main menu. Run down and in need of a spruce up.

Review 82:Size and comfort of bedroom Location Friendly staff

Review 83:Having to leave, would happily have stayed another night or two.

Review 84:Food:- excellent quality and value rooms:- bang up to date and very comfortable staff :- very friendly and helpful

Review 85:Enter your phone number here

Review 86:We stayed in a suite(one of us sleeps and one doesn't) which was huge and very comfortably furnished. The bathroom was large, very modern, stylish and practical. Staff very friendly and helpful. There were functions in the hotel but we weren't disturbed by any noise.

Review 87:The location was a little too far from other amenities. There was no lounge in which to relax on comfortable chairs, settees etc. and enjoy a cup of tea, coffee or an alcoholic beverage before or after dinner.

Review 88:The size of the bedroom was great with easily moved easy chairs for watching television, The bathroom had a luxurious feel. The meals were very good and the staff were very friendly.

Review 89:The wifi in the room had a very bad signal. Often it did not work at all on our devices. The food was quite average and the renovation and building work made the place feel uncomfortable and look, in parts, quite unpleasant.

Review 90:One staff member in particular was very warm, relaxed and accommodating. Our bedroom was nicely decorated and the bathroom was large.

Review 91:very little, fruit at breakfast was very cold but we were quite early so just out of fridge.

Review 92:Big comfortable room with lovely bathroom. Breakfast good. Staff excellent

Review 93:There is some unfinished building work on the site. Work was not in progress, so noise was not an issue, but it does spoil the look of the Hotel from the outside a little bit.

Review 94:The room was exactly like the pictures. The staff were friendly and helpful at all times. It had all the facilities listed and expected for a 4* hotel. There was a 21st birthday on in the function suite and apart from seeing the guests you could not tell, only directly outside the function room could you hear how loud the party really was! We were in the Suite and everything was as shown and described.

Review 95:We had to leave our dog in the car while we ate in the bar (not the restaurant). The hotel could be better signed: we had to ask at a nearby petrol station. The room contained little information (was wifi included?)

Review 96:We were glad to be able to take our dog into our room, which was large, quiet and comfortable. I slept very well. The staff were all pleasant, helpful and polite.

Review 97:Food menu too extensive. Quality of cooking not good. Food presentation not good. In general eating experience more akin to a cafe than a four star hotel.

Review 98:Location of hotel, quality and decor of bedrooms.

Review 99:There was nothing that spoilt our weekend although I can understand some guests would not like the unfinished extension.

Review 100:We spent last weekend at this hotel to celebrate my parents golden wedding anniversary. There was 10 adults an 6 children. The rooms were delightful with lovely decor, especially the suite which we booked for our parents with a separate living room and four poster bed. Due to the size of our party we were given a dining room to ourselves for both evening meal and breakfast. Lauren and Alex looked after our every need and nothing was too much trouble. The food was very good and the bar prices average. Our weekend was everything we expected and more. We will cherish the memories for years to come. A huge thank you to Simon and all the staff.

Review 101:Seems like the hotel should not be operating at the moment. Steel girders of a building site do not help any view. It was the next day before I realised the hot water in the basins were not broken but turned the wrong way. The shower head was very high and not able to be adjusted. Breakfast was very not good at all.

Review 102:The suite was comfortable with a good lounge suite. The bed was comfortable and the dinner lovely

Review 103:Don't be fooled by the Country House photo as it does not show the adjoining building site on one side and tired looking annexe on the other. The unimpressive Reception Area was unmanned on our arrival. The room had not been cleaned properly; there were sticky marks on the bedside table, the carpet was vacuumed around the furniture but not underneath, mugs on teatray were not clean. Lighting in the room was too dim to read by and there was no main ceiling light, only bedside lamps. We like to sleep with the window open but this was not possible as there were lots of flies coming in. The bathroom also had problems; the shower produced so much condensation and splashing that everything got soaked. There was no toilet roll holder so the loo paper was on a high shelf out of reach from the toilet. There was no bathmat which we had to request from reception. The breakfast was mediocre. Overall a very dissapointing stay!!!

Review 104:Comfortable beds, good sleep.

Review 105:The hotel is in the process of a major refurbishment and has the feel of being in the middle of a building site. Car park is far away but luggage can be dropped off at the entrance.

Review 106:The bedroom block and rooms were of an exceptionally high standard. Staff were more than helpful and friendly

Review 107:We stayed in a suite which was very clean and spacious for an overnight stay on our way to Glasgow airport. The host and staff were very friendly and helpful. Lovely bar are and evening meal. Superb breakfast

Review 108:The hallway and reception desk let the venue down due to the layout. No feeling of being in a classy place. Also the building works to one side are an eyesore.

Review 109:Massive bathroom. Very modern. Lovely design. Bedding also high quality with very good furniture.

Review 110:We really enjoyed our one night's stay at the Woodland House, Dumfries. The hotel is set in beautiful well tended grounds. The staff were very friendly and helpful at all times. The bedrooms were clean, comfortable, spacious and very well presented. I would also recommend dining at the hotel. Overall great value for money.

Review 111:Hotel too far from Dumfries. Absence of: Bathmat, Toilet Roll holder,Grab Handles in Bath and Anti-Slip Mat in bath. We were told these items were unavailable in spite of requests to staff from previous guests

Review 112:Beautiful house and magnificent grounds Helpful polite staff Reasonable prices

Review 113:The function room to the left is a bit of an eyesore as is the extension to the right which seems to have started but not finished. Couldn't get a phone signal in the room or wifi but it was ok in the bar

Review 114:The staff are among the friendliest hotel staff I have come across. Nothing was a problem to them, a great Scottish welcome. Dinner was excellent Great breakfast Quiet location and a very comfortable room

Review 115:Couldn't get on Wi-Fi at all. Combined with lack of phone signal (which of course is not the hotel's fault in any way) it meant I was out of touch with everyone for the night which worried family at home.

Review 116:Bedroom was great, spacious and clean. Bathroom was fab, spacious again and plenty of hot water. Very comfy bed. Staff were great and helped me out with room service. Despite being a wedding party on same night, I had a great night's sleep.

Review 117:The only thing we did not like was having to eat dinner in a very small public bar and the menu was poor very old style pub grub felt this let it down as everything else was perfect if we stayed again for leisure we would eat out

Review 118:The rooms were lovely and very clean and no noise the staff where very helpful even cooked us an early breakfast on Sunday

Review 119:I didn't dislike anything however a suggestion would be to have better signage direction on road from Dunfries and especially Newbridge (for those that don't have sat nav)

Review 120:Very attentive staff, great room, good food and good value.

Review 121:The fact that it looked a little scruffy with a half built extension connected to the hotel. Portion of breakfast not enough especially for two hungry young lads with big appetites as buffet would have been better and also a Scottish breakfast ain't the same without the haggis.

Review 122:The location was good as it was close to where we needed to be the next day. Hotel was clean, cosy and comfortable. Lovely interior and exterior. Tasty breakfast.

Review 123:Absolutely nothing to dislike

Review 124:The staff were friendly and helpful The hotel was spotless Food (dinner and breakfast) were excellent and very reasonably priced Setting is incredible

Review 125:WiFi was awful Electronic door locks would not work 4 times i had to have it re set Building works left at a standstill outside

Review 126:Rooms were very large and modern Bathrooms were very nice and had a great shower Staff were helpful

Review 127:Having read other gripes I can only agree with the comments regarding the bathrooms. They are well appointed but the hand basins and especially the taps are impractical and annoying to use. And yes, no toilet roll holders ?

Review 128:4 star high class en suite bedrooms attached to 3 star public areas set in beautiful period country house and grounds. Development was in progress but obviously halted some time ago, hence the rusting steel frame adjacent to one side of the property. Pity there is no lounge and the bar area is too small, especially when used as an overflow dining area. Staff are friendly and helpful. In spite of the overall situation the room rates and food is priced competively and therefore very little to complain about.

Review 129:Toilet roll holder needed!

Review 130:Lovely bedrooms and en suite, comfortable bed and armchairs. Very tasty food, especially the starters. Pleasant friendly staff.

Review 131:Outside Appearance Slightly Marred By Ongoing Building Work. (Nothing In Progress During Our Stay)

Review 132:Large Bed, Comfortable Room, Huge Bathroom, Tasty Breakfast, Friendly Staff.

Review 133:Cooked breakfast greasy.

Review 134:Room tastefully decorated. Wood furniture high standard. Bathroom luxurious! Staff friendly and efficient. Rooms quiet with no sound coming from neighbouring rooms.

Review 135:There was nothing to dislike.

Review 136:Very friendly place. We had a lovely spacious room and enjoyed watching the rabbits from the window. Would certainly recommend.
