Reviews for The Bay Hotel Teignmouth
Review 1:Really tired decor - the reception area is shockingly run down. Staff were helpful but seemed to spend a lot of time smoking outside. Breakfast was in an unpleasant room without windows and the food was not acceptable. The room was OK but the only heating was a plug in radiator in the bedroom (bathroom unheated) and the sash window was bunged up with toilet paper presumably to stop drafts. No bath mat, or heated towel rail.
Review 2:Room dirty. Curtains torn and dirty and were not able to be closed fully - this necessary as room was on seafront and heavily trafficed
Review 3:Not a lot Female owner greeted us smoking on the steps!
Review 4:Not a bad experience for us but there could be a problem parking at the hotel as spaces are very limited.
Review 5:Friendly staff, comfortable room, very nice breakfast.
Review 6:Premium price paid for Premium room - no hot water on arrival, promised it would be ok in 30 mins, still nothing after 2 hours. Water only tepid next day. Room and hotel in need of urgent tlc - would not use again.
Review 7:I have heart problems and when I phoned to tell the hotel Alan immediatly arranged for us to have a ground floor room and for us to take our breakfast in the groundfloor dining room. Nothing was too much trouble.
Review 8:The room was never worth £95, the breakfast room was going through a refurbishment, 3 times I had to ask for the toast I ordered and it was just shoddy really
Review 9:I can't think of anything that I actually liked about the hotel apart from the location.
Review 10:The Owners appeared to be underfunded and the hotel needs a very serious re-furbishment with love and care. The Owners should decide where their customer base is, i.e. become select or take all and be rundown.
Review 11:The staff seemed to be trying and the parking was adaquate. The building itself is excellent.
Review 12:Bedroom very small for a double. No room for bedside cabinet, only small dressing table very close to the bathroom door and was knocked nearly every time using the bathroom. two small chairs, one again just behind bathroom door. My daughters single room was almost size of a cupboard. Lots of stairs some of which were steep to go up. Also stairs down to breakfast room. Noisy in the morning because of traffic. Would not stay there again.
Review 13:Breakfast was good.
Review 14:Wifi signal was terrible, we could hardly use the internet (or room was on the top floor). I am very unsure of fire safety - there is only one way up and down and I didn't see alternative fire exits. Every corridor door is left open at all times and they all have a large sign on saying, 'Fire door, keep shut at all times'. Made me feel very unsafe. Curtains let in a fair amount of light, and staff response to my comment was that no-one else had ever mentioned it. Well, there's a reason all big hotel chains have blackout lining on their curtains - not all just for me! Guests have to hand in their keys to the receptionist every time they pop out, and then the receptionist is often serving in the bar or smoking outside the door. But having said all that - the hotel isn't so bad (apart from fire safety issues).
Review 15:Hotel is generally ok - it was the last one remaining and we were glad to have a room in the town.
Review 16:Noisey staff talking loudly & smoking just below our window well after 11.00 until I spoke with them. They obliged & stopped.
Review 17:Your website didn't convey our party size. I searched for 2 adults & 1 child aged 2. This & the last hotel did NOT get the message of our 2 yr old daughter & both said that we should have phoned. So why bother with your site for booking.
Review 18:The shower was only a trickle the bath panel was broken and the the old windows wouldnt stay up , the hotel needs a lot of work to bring it up to date , also needs parking it has parking for about 4-6 cars.
Review 19:The staff are really freindly and helpful .the food was lovely.
Review 20:Very very small single room on middle floor. No lift and breakfast room down in basement. Very doggy smell in Bar
Review 21:The staff carried my 2 cases up three flights of stairs
Review 22:There was no lift. There was very little parking space. The hotel had a downstairs bar where guests sat outside and the noise could be heard in the room. To cap it all drunken youths were carrying on their night out from 4am till 5.30am in the park opposite, although I do realise that was not the fault of the hotel itself just its location. I certainly would not choose this hotel again as we like peace and quiet.
Review 23:A nice view overlooking the bay. A comfortable room
Review 24:No bed side light so I moved the lamp to the bed side on the floor but the bulb was blown! The plug in the sink didn't work and the extractor fan in the bathroom ran continuously so had to listen to the constant humming! It also advertises free parking but there was no space and the cars were three deep so you were asked to leave the keys! Not the sort of place you'd want to leave them to be honest!
Review 25:Excellent location and lovely breakfast! Free wifi
Review 26:An enjoyable stay, no negative comments.
Review 27:Helpful staff, very considerate and helpful. Car Parking was taken care off by staff. Enjoyable breakfast and ambiance.
Review 28:not being given a code to get into the hotel if door locked, and having to wait for someone to answer the bell, it was just midnight!
Review 29:the location and friendly staff
Review 30:Had to wait for the laundry service to bring clean bedding, so didn't unpack until about 5pm but not a major problem.
Review 31:Good location, comfortable room, quiet. Good breakfast. Nice bar for a late drink. We didn't use the Restaurant.
Review 32:Our bedroom carpet was extremely dirty and desperately needed cleaning. The bedroom window was double glazed but the seal had failed and all external noise and breeze travelled straight through it. Nobody was available on reception for checking out. We had to go down to the kitchen and ask the breakfast chef if we could leave the key with him. There was a member of staff walking around with his large pet lizard on his shoulder, which was a little off-putting.
Review 33:Our room (no.10) was very small but decorated very nicely and had everything you would require. The bathroom was very large and very clean. Certain parts of the hotel had been refurbished and were very nice. The location was ideal and on site free parking was available. The staff were all friendly and courteous. The breakfast chef was lovely and cooked the best hotel breakfast that we have ever had.
Review 34:Friendly and helpful staff. It is a gathering place of sorts for the locals, who come to enjoy events on the weekends. The location could not be better - a deck allows you to step outside and enjoy the views. No other hotel in Teignmouth has this.
Review 35:No parking as advertised. Room was not cleaned properly or bed made, towels from previous occupant left in room, cooked breakfast good but other options limited. Funfair outside hotel.
Review 36:Position of hotel was good, on seafront. Staff cheerful and helpful.
Review 37:Bathroom space was limited and challenging, very badly positioned shelf above the hand basin.
Review 38:Good location Breakfast was excellent. Ample hot water. Likes tea and coffee facilities.
Review 39:The room was hot and stuffy and the stairs were quite difficult to negotiate with luggage. A man was singing in the lounge bar when I arrived back after 11pm and the space was full and very noisy . It took some time to get served a drink to carry to my room and it appeared almost an imposition to be asking
Review 40:Breakfast was delightful and efficient
Review 41:We stay in the Bay Suite room, lovely comfortable bed, the huge jacuzzi bath was great and lovely sea views plus ten out of ten for location! Fantastic meal, what a shame there weren't more people dining.
Review 42:Although the hotel was generally clean I did notice a few dirty tablecloths on the two mornings I had breakfast
Review 43:I was particularly impressed with the friendliness of all of the staff that I met
Review 44:The (single) bed was exceptionally hard and I didn't sleep well. But that may suit some, so hey!Un
Review 45:Since my last visit, the management has changed and the staff are exceptionally smiling and helpful. That makes such a difference. And it's by means the case everywhere!
Review 46:Luggage not put into room as requested when brought in the morning as we were getting married so had to look for it at midnight when I should have been in with my new wife
Review 47:Room was comfortable
Review 48:The carpet in the room was very stained. All the furniture appeared very tired. Despite the staff in the kitchen doing their best to keep it clean ,the manager was walking around the kitchen with a lizard on his shoulder, totally unhygienic. £270 for 2 nights a bit much.
Review 49:Location was very good.
Review 50:It boasts a restaurant ( one of the reasons I booked ) Although it was a Friday evening the restaurant was not open and a guest who had been staying there all week said it had not been open.I couldnt find anyone to check me out so I just hung my key on the hook and left (I had not run up any extras as it was only one night) but no question of "good bye hope to see you again "
Review 51:Clean, quiet, excellent breakfast Staff seem to have little or no back up from management but gave their best
Review 52:i didnt enjoy breakfast my toast was white not done long enough, overall had better breakfast which was a shame because it dampened our stay!
Review 53:the staff were helpful and very friendly the room was spotless,:)
Review 54:My only observation is that the penthouse could do with a makeover. Lots of dead plants on the sun terrace, cigarette butts and faded garden ornaments. The bath side panel was missing and the cables for the tv etc need a couple of cable tidies. And an investment in a new sofa would be good. It's a shame because it could be fabulous. Also, be warned there are 3 flights of stairs to climb.
Review 55:We stayed in the Penthouse, which has the most amazing views, centrally located, and is great if you want a mini apartment. The breakfast was freshly cooked and the poached eggs and smoked mackrel were a good way to start the day. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 56:having to leave!
Review 57:Staff, friendly & helpful Breakfasts were great, REALY great. My room was always well serviced and very clean. Good shower. Comfy bed.
Review 58:mugs left unwashed overnight (once),biscuits on 1st night only, no lounge we had to sit in the Bar, no evening meal available in the hotel despite this being advertised, duvet cover seam was incomplete and the filling was not fully contained, side hems of at least 2 towels were frayed
Review 59:friendliness of the staff
Review 60:Parking is awkward at busy times with chance of being blocked in and there are not enough spaces at busy times. This is thru' no fault of the management and staff as space is limited, except perhaps some guidelines for parking could be made clear e.g not to block exits for other guests,. The so called Bistro is a bit of a misnomer at the moment. It seems that at present breakfast is the only meal served but we may be wrong. We suspect that they are without a chef at the moment.
Review 61:It seems that the present management have plans for improvement. We wish them well as the hotel has many plus features.' but is a little tired. Location is brilliant - 2 mins walk from the promenade. Bed was comfy and the reading lights above the bed excellent; so many hotel rooms have poor lighting for reading. storage for clothes was fine. Shower room fine if a bit of a squeeze Staff were helpful on the whole . Breakfasts were good ; slight lack of attention to detail at times eg a cup laid with no saucer and having to ask for little things e g sauce and marmalade . We felt that the hotel is a work in progress at the moment and it would be harsh to criticise but would expect it to be even better in a year or so e g the reception area . The lovely new blue paint on the facade (done during the week we were there ) is a first step hopefully for more improvements. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would be happy to stay again.
Review 62:Having to wait to get checked-out because all of the staff were serving breakfast - Surely the cost of having someone on the desk for three hours is not huge?
Review 63:The room was good and the bed was very comfortable and got a very good nights sleep Breakfast choices were excellent
Review 64:The organization:- everyone needed a code fob to get in after 11pm and some were not told.
Review 65:The staff were hard working and cheerful. Nice position of hotel and good sea views.
Review 66:No food available in bar despite large notice on outside of hotel claiming excellent bar food Management of hotel appeared chaotic. Some friends were left on the doorstep late on a wet and windy night when they forgot their key code fob and the person on the end of the intercom simply switched it off. If this was the person in charge of the hotel at night, I dread to think what would have happened if a fire had broken out
Review 67:Location
Review 68:Poor standard of accommodation for the money, no privacy, shower broken and held in place by a plaster, no double glazing so noise from the bar terrace went on until the early hours , I could go on but will leave it with "just awful, don't go!"
Review 69:I have always loved stopping at the bay and had a great experience but this time was not the same. As we were checking in we were "welcomed" by the owner who was hammered! As we entered our room "12" there was a very strong smell of damp with damp stains on the ceiling. To top the stay off, as we went to check out there was nobody there at the desk, I don't think they even new we had left as yet again this "shirley" was outside getting bladdered again at half past ten in the morning. I have been stopping at the bay for a number of years now but since the new owners have taken over the place has really gone downhill. Its a shame but I shall not be stopping again.
Review 70:Hotels location
Review 71:Wasnt impressed by my first mornings breakfast but my 2nd was very nice. Attitude problem with one member of staff, she needs to learn some people skills.
Review 72:The location is excellent, right in the centre of Teignmouth. The owner called Shirley was very nice and a good laugh and one member of staff called Alan was great, he was very helpful and just a nice guy.
Review 73:the WiFi not working
Review 74:Fantastic location, close to beach, sea-front, Ness and lively riverside bars; breakfast was well-cooked with good choice; staff were helpful; room was smart and well-equipped
Review 75:On the first morning, breakfast was not ready at the stated time because the staff admitted both of them had overslept. The table was dirty and the toast was soggy. The second day the table was again dirty and so was the cutlery but everything else was fine. The room does not have the hairdryer or iron as stated. The bin in my bathroom had not been emptied from the previous guest and the hot water took 10 minutes to heat up. When I went to ask reception about it, the man looked like he couldnt have cared less and told me to come back later if it hadnt warmed up. They also advertise on a board outside across the road that they have a restaurant open 7 days a week but we were told there was no evening chef so the restaurant wasnt open. The pictures online make it look so much better than it actually is.
Review 76:The location of the hotel is perfect. Right next to the beach and the views are very beautiful. I could not see these from my room though.
Review 77:I thought the hotel was a little over priced even with the view.
Review 78:Location, the view, the lady who served us breakfast, the lady on reception on 13th July and a young lady on the same day. All very friendly and helpful.
Review 79:TV in bar - but maybe that will go once the World Cup had finished?!
