Reviews for Cliffden Hotel
Review 1:The corridor floors were very squeaky and there was a lot of door banging. The hotel could have done with a spruce up.
Review 2:The staff were all very efficient and friendly. Our room was tidy and clean. The breakfast was plentiful and set us up for the day.The grounds were beautiful and the poor gardener has his work cut out.Overall a very pleasant stay for the price.Easy stroll into town for something to eat or the hotel evening meal smelt delicious.
Review 3:in need of re-decoration. The food was traditional english and not of my ususal cuisine; to me it tasted too much of vinegar, salt en sugar. Menu is a set menu, not a la carte.
Review 4:Acccessable with parking, and lift. Great location with grounds perfecr for limited mobilty. Freindly staff and swimming pool.
Review 5:did not like where we were sat for breakfast table squashed right between rubbish bin and table for cereals fruit juice asked if any other sorry other tables reserved for full board guests expected better for cost of room
Review 6:lovely location lovely room
Review 7:The shower cubicle was too small for me to wash comfortably.
Review 8:I liked all the staff, especially a young waitress named 'Emily'whose attitude was delightful.
Review 9:The beer from the bar wasn't carbonated correctly. Pedestrian entrance is not particularly safe because it is shared with cars going through a narrow gateway with poor sight lines. It would be nice to have a pedestrian entrance on Dawlish Road which would make the walk into town much shorter. The bed quality was a bit suspect.
Review 10:Being served freshly cooked breakfast at the table, which is so much nicer than self service. Good coffee from the coffee machine at the bar. Great view and plenty of parking right outside the front door. The swimming pool looked nice. Ramps everywhere make good access for those on wheels.
Review 11:The room was not very clean and the bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable. Didn't appreciate the waterproof mattress cover. The heating was not sufficient.
Review 12:Location, Facility for breakfast in room, due to having our dog with us.
Review 13:Not being able to get back in hotel after midnight as no card system I had to ring the bell or call the hotel! Hotel needs refurbishing ASAP
Review 14:Friendly staff Clean Comfortable bed
Review 15:Nothing.
Review 16:This is a Vision Hotel so other guests were blind and it accommodates their Guide Dogs. It is a very friendly environment. Te view from the dining room is fantastic.
Review 17:The cleanliness of our room I'm afraid left a lot to be desired as there was a smear of faeces on the toilet lid, which I had to clean off myself. I didn't say anything about it as I didn't want to get anyone into trouble.
Review 18:I liked the location of the hotel and the overall relaxed atmosphere. The breakfast was well cooked and promptly served. The staff were pleasant and courteous.
Review 19:The quality of the cooked breakfast was poor. Cheap sausages, overcooked bacon, and very greasy fried bread. Could be much improved for little extra price on core ingredients
Review 20:The staff were welcoming, friendly and polite both in the restaurant and bar area
Review 21:Pool closes too early. Checked in about 5.15 and pool was already closed for the day.
Review 22:Great location. Comfy bed. Plenty of space in the room and lots of wardrobe space. Private off road parking.
Review 23:The Hotel staff were very helpful, they allowed us to changed rooms after a very noisy, sleepless first night, due to our designated room being so close to the extremely loud boiler!!! Take my advice pay extra and book a family room, we had paid extra for a balcony, so we were moved to room 104 it was lovely. Close to reception and quiet at night. Have to say the mattress was hard, so we used the single bed duvets as extra padding; worked a treat! Cannot understand complaints about the breakfast. There is plenty of choice and more than enough on the plate. Having the pool on-sight is a great bonus.
Review 24:It would be nice if the website CLEARLY stated that the hotel mostly caters for blind/disabled people. As I am neither my experience was not good. There was constant noise from the boiler system at night. The dining room is only open from 6pm to 8pm. The breakfast was very poor, cheap ingredients, badly cooked, burnt toast, etc. The rooms are dated and worn and the beds have rubber sheets under the cotton sheets which makes the beds uncomfortable, this along with poor quality mattresses, small towels and failure of the staff to replenish supplies in the room did not create a pleasant experience. Overall very poor and not good value for money.
Review 25:although the food was lovely the restaurant but not so clean with spider webs and spiders above us
Review 26:The food was lovely and the staff were great! Rooms are really big and spacious
Review 27:Room very basic and had loads of cobwebs. We were in a room with a sloped ceiling and the position of the shower made it nearly impossible to use; water pressure was non existent. Also took money from account twice; took nearly a week to refund.
Review 28:Needed a good clean, I know it was a hotel for dogs also, but there could be rooms for none dog owners, but I didn't expect a dogs bed in my clothes cupboard, like none smoking,we paid extra for a seaview room, and got a broken glazed window, our shower was broke, mixer tap shower, were you got a warm shower but water pouring on your feet,
Review 29:The tea tray was very well presented with tea pot too, the pool was a very good size, you were also given towels to use, also a very friendly life guard, the inside of the main area had many period features, with a grand stair case, high cielings, walking distance to the beach, via a gate,
Review 30:The external building needs repairing and painting.
Review 31:Location to town, beautiful garden. Room spacious, clean and comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful. Having breakfast in the room was great as we had our little dog with us.
Review 32:mix up with room booking, no sea view. no apology no compensation too late to change charge for extra milk in room for tea. always looking for savings beds very hard and cheap mattresses
Review 33:location to beech, restaurant staff very good, food god value
Review 34:Bed creaked. Shower poor.Soap not renewed in bathroom for new occupant. English breakfast not fresh - bacon and sausage tough- probably cooked the night before.
Review 35:Quietness of area.Gardens
Review 36:Not a problem but, the décor was rather tired - this was more than made up for by everything else.
Review 37:Great breakfast with an good choice. friendly and helpful staff.
Review 38:bed squeaked. rooms needed decorating & updating. could be a great hotel if it got some tlc.
Review 39:location was good. grounds were excellent. staff friendly. breakfast lovel
Review 40:Shower was a nightmare to work & control temperature. Double was actually 2 single beds pushed together.
Review 41:Great location, good breakfast, lovely grounds.
Review 42:No disabled parking near the entrance of hotel
Review 43:This hotel is excalent if you are visually impared however if you are not you felt like an outsider that aside it is a nice hotel
Review 44:We felt 2nd best when turned down for dinner then they changed their minds. Great at the smugglers inn up the road. Jx
Review 45:The food was good. Chef attitude poor. Entertainment good. Most of staff great. View of a brick wall not so good. My fault. Jx
Review 46:Excellent bubbly staff who obviously enjoyed their job. We greatly admired the VIP's and their wonderful guide dogs. The best kept secret is the gate to the seafront - will know next time!
Review 47:Very friendly very helpful staff. Lovely dinner and breakfast. So clean. Beautiful very well looked after. It was all excellent. Use of fantastic swimming pool great.
Review 48:The Hotel needs to provide the actual Road Name the entrance is located on as to see the Hotel coming up the hill is difficult whilst driving.
Review 49:Friendliness, helpfulness of staff towards all guests. Comfort of the room and facilities provided.
Review 50:Unbelievably, for a hotel specifically for people with a visual impairment, signage eg indicating direction for room numbers was very poor, elegant and on brass plates, but too small for a person with less than 20/20 sight. On arrival at Reception I was given a long string of directions re how to find my room, which were impossible ro remember, and would have been unnecessary if signage had been better. The taps on the handbasin in the bathroom were very poorly marked for anyone with limited vision, the H and C engravings were hard to see unless you got them in the right light, it would have been so much better if they had had some simple colour indication, eg red and blue It felt slightly lacking in identity, the Welcome brochure in the bedroom did not feature the name of the hotel on the cover, just the name of the goup , Vision Hotels, it would have felt more meaningful and welcoming if the Cliffden Hotel name was featured on the front as well.
Review 51:Beautiful gardens and quiet hotel with spacious dining room.
Review 52:This is a Vision Hotel - it provides absolutely brilliant services and support for guests with visual impairment. This is obviously reflected in the facilities and service provided. The grounds are beautiful and the food good.
Review 53:The hotel is geared for visually impaired people. We had some information in Braille in our room but not in printed form (as new documents were being prepared). We were asked to pay 5p a pot for extra milk for our room although we were not actually charged as we had no change.
Review 54:Waitresses were particularly friendly and efficient. Breakfast was very good. Rooms were clean. Location is good and only a short walk to the town and beach.
Review 55:the staff are so friendly and seeing all those guide dogs was such a blessing. the ambience is just beautiful, the garden, the view and the locale. very much a plus.
Review 56:Room 120, Beds probably could be a little more comfortable but a very good room with balcony and views over the extensive gardens.
Review 57:service was excellent, food was very good and service in the dining room was top class. All in all we had a very nice break.
Review 58:We asked for a high floor when we booked online but were allocated an almost basement room. However, the gentleman at reception took the trouble to find us a room on the second floor for our week's stay.
Review 59:Friendly staff. Good quality food for breakfasts and evening meals.
Review 60:Was not given a full brief when we checked in - also at no time were we advised this hotel was for blind people and their dogs. In general was disappointed with the 3 star rating of the hotel.
Review 61:The Grounds were fantastic and pool
Review 62:One dislike bed not overly comfortable and with the plastic sheet on the mattress awoke in the night wet with sweat (Not Nice)
Review 63:Staff very friendly and well able to deal with VIP's (Visually Impaired People) Food great and plenty of it
Review 64:Me and my wife like Teignmouth a lot we usually stay in a b&b so we thought we would try the cliffden we new it was for the partial blind and the blind and were a bit nervous at first but what a great experience people very kind service spot on and a real pleasure to go to the bar at night and mix with the other residents and see the guide dogs we will be definitely going back to this hotel one great plus is the parking
Review 65:Just some small things stood out, I believe the manager should walk round and pick up on these and have them sorted out, IE Curtain on the window as you come out of the lift on the second floor very dirty, just needs taking down and washed or cleaned, the carpet in the lift needs a new one, the lights over the bed have to be turned off, by you getting out of bed to turn them off by the main switch, the room could have been cleaned better as.the bath room had dirty marks over the toilet holder and the wall on the left hand side as you go in. Just a bit more care could make all the diffreants, with the small things done the hotel should have no complaints
Review 66:Hotel was right near to where our grandson lived and very handy for us to go round our granson's
Review 67:The bed was too firm. The website did not explain fully that it was primarily blind people and their partners. I also did not like sitting next to someone who was feeding their dog at the table next to me. I would have rather have booked another hotel to give them space to enjoy their holiday, I felt like I was intruding.
Review 68:It was a quiet hotel where you could sit and relax. The food was good and the staff were very atentative. They wanted to make sure you were happy.
Review 69:Breakfast was ok, but the Cups, plates etc werent the cleanest. Being a vision hotel the reception area was often busy. The bar area was small. But fairly reasonable prices for a hotel.
Review 70:Great location & grounds. Close to centre and free parking. Good value for money.
Review 71:Sadly our bedroom had no view at all-a brick wall and we had paid quite a lot for the weekend. The Hotel is situated on quite a steep hill. As the Hotel is primarily for blind and partially sighted people most of the emphasis is on providing for them which Iam very heartened to see. However everyone is a guest in the hotel and it would be helpful for the hotel either on booking to make this emphasis clear or to have a clear hotel system where everyone is welcomed and treated the same.(eg table system- when reserving tables for dinner being able to reserve for the whole stay rather than having to book each night on the day, being assigned the same table would also be helpful)
Review 72:Hotel is in a good location and was easy to find. The staff are very welcoming and the breakfast and dinner were good value and nicely presented.
Review 73:Just a bit dated, Un kept in places pool was very poor with changing rooms dirty and old fashioned no locks on lockers.
Review 74:Location and helpful staff in paticularly breakfast waitress.
Review 75:We call on the day just to double check the cot bed previous requested however when we arrive they forgot to put cot bed. Breakfast took almost 1 hour just to have some toast and egg Room service didn't respect the not disturb door sign and we had our baby sleeping Very Poor facilities No internet on the rooms area
Review 76:Garden of the hotel and access to sea side Nice pool principle for children's
Review 77:terrible room, non existent mattress, dirty, no wifi, TV not working, rude staff - Management obviously do not care about able-bodied guests
Review 78:Nothing - maybe location
Review 79:The food wasn't always cooked properly and it needed a coat of paint and for some areas, a good clean.
Review 80:The fact it was aimed at partially sighted people like my partner. The menu was in large print so he could read it himself.
Review 81:Breakfast staff seemed a little disorganised - stayed there for five nights, but each morning had to approach restaurant staff to ask for tea/coffee. Didn't think that our 'sea view' room merited an extra £100.00. On that basis, will probably not go there again.
Review 82:Was nice to see people with disabilities and with their pets. Lots of pleasant conversation, very relaxing from this point of view (we weren't aware that this hotel catered for disabled people). Gardens were pleasant to walk through and the bar area was quite relaxing.
Review 83:Dirty curtains with hem down. not the cleanest room. overpriced room.
Review 84:The hotel grounds. Friendly staff Very good breakfast The concept of the hotel is good.
Review 85:Excellent staff. The care and consideration given to the blind clients but that they were mixed with able bodied residents to everyone's benefit and enjoyment
Review 86:We had hairs in our bath upon arrival and the room could have been cleaner, we didn't feel the bedroom was worth the price charged.
Review 87:The gardens are lovely and our dinner was very nice, the staff were all very friendly.
Review 88:3 single beds, they were so narrow I measured them! 76cm wide, if you turn over yu would fall off! I have never seen such narrow beds in my life. Leaking radiators meaning oaking wet carpet and with an interconnecting door to the next room meant we haerd every conversation fron the next door family and the wort traffice noise I have ever heard from the street all night. cobwebs and dirt. We were moved to a quiet and clean room with an apology for the next night but not worth the money. We were honestly there at short notice for a funeral so had little choice. If you book here make sure you are in the new annexe which is reasonable not the old house which is terrible beyond compare! the staff were lovely and did their best to improve on the situation, if you like faulty towers go for it otherwise miss this one with a barge pole! the gardens are beautiful though and do acess the sea front which is worth a price I guess
Review 89:the staff and the gardens and access to the sea front
Review 90:Had evening meal which was very good choice excellent food This was a vision hotel the staff were marvellous with the guests Had evening entertainment play your cards right and singer lots of fun
Review 91:During late evenings some of the residents would be talking till late at the bottom of the stairwell which was very annoying when trying to sleep.
Review 92:Location, staff was good. We were not aware that the hotel was a residence for blind people with dogs, however we had no issues with this as we work with people who have disabilities.
Review 93:There is dust on the main Staircase between the Upright Rails. A small point but it spoilt the rating. The area lacked some ornaments on the Fireplace for instance. Only small things which would lift the place.
Review 94:It's location and the walk through the garden to the beach. No nead for a car and car parking! The Evening Meal was really good and the Staff all very friendly.
Review 95:Slightly worn around the edges. Paint work needs washing down in places
Review 96:The swimming pool and the garden plus the location. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Review 97:Decor in some of the rooms needed updating.
Review 98:Location of hotel, with big garden. Very helpful friendly staff. It was wonderful watching the guide-dogs working - we met some lovely people there - sighted and non-sighted, and their guide-dogs.
Review 99:The room was far too hot dspite the heating not being on. The shower was dreadful. No hot water despite being OK when it came out of the bath tap.
Review 100:The location was good because it was near the town and the cliff path.
Review 101:I feel more effort should be made in advertising the hotel caters for the Blind & visually impaired. The general condition of the grounds could do with more maintenance; the hotel could do with better cleaning allot of doors where dirty and looked like they had not been wiped for years. The place could also do with a lick of paint. The beds where rubbish old and the mattresses collapsed under any weight placed on them so a good night’s sleep was impossible. The entire wing we stayed in the floor board creaked with every foot step again making movement very load especially at night. The first room we were given had a view of the main road which was noisy and with a dog compound below with dog’s poo made for a wonderful site and smell which we complained about and where moved. I could go on and on
Review 102:The location was great the grounds where loverely & short walk to the beech
Review 103:Narrow corridors (try carrying two cases at the same time!), room was MILES away from reception and poorly signed and directed; had to escorted by another guest. Breakfast was pretty poor even taking the lack of gas into concideration. Tired decor and bathroom smelt like a hospital. Room wasnt the type booked (twin not a double). Didn't even enter the bar after hearing the entertainment beforehand!
Review 104:Location was in good walking distance to the town, on a hill but not to steep. Good views. Carpark available
Review 105:The hotel is very dated and needs an update. The shower was very unpredictable The breakfast (for the cost) wasn't very nice.
Review 106:The Staff were very friendly, helpful and pleasant. Teinmouth location is lovely
Review 107:Strong smell of dog poo in the lobby. Stale breakfast cereal. Miserable staff. Institutional atmosphere: this was a holiday home for blind people, not a family hotel. We were duped. Black bacteria around the bath. Distance from pillow to centre of main A379 to Exeter was less than 4 metres. The bed shook when lorries went by. Noisiest hotel room ever and only ineffective, broken secondary glazing. Worst hotel experience in over 20 years. Truly awful.
Review 108:One single waiter made an effort to be professional and he was just fresh from school.
Review 109:Our room was in the roof on the end facing the sea. With tall trees in front our sea view was greatly restricted not worth paying for sea view. Room window very small not much ventilation, bath room had no window only a noisy fan. Bed small compared to most hotel at this price. WiFi poor especially upload speed. Parking a bit restricted. The hotels public areas in need of TLC and brightening up.
Review 110:The hotel has friendly staff, with good service at meals, in the bar and at reception. Food was also good. Gardens and setting excellent with easy walking to sea front and beach though the gardens. Although obstructed sea view much quieter than rooms facing directly on the road.
Review 111:My only criticism would be on our arrival to the dining room for breakfast on the first morning. We were asked 'were we just bed & breakfast'. The term 'just' implies second rate and is unnecessary. I fully understand the need for tables to be reserved so that people with sight issues are able to sit at the same table for the duration of their stay, this is logical. Please find another way of assigning tables to B&B guests. The term currently used is rather demeaning!
Review 112:Wonderful ethos in offering this amenity to the blind and partially sighted traveller. Neither of which I suffer, but we met some lovely people with their dogs. The grounds of the hotel were stunning and staff very caring.
Review 113:The noise of the boiler kept my husband awake all night. It sounded like a tumble dryer going, we did complain but the night porter said he couldn't do anything about it.
Review 114:creaking floor boards, people walking about whilst triing to sleep,a very strong smell coming from the bathroom, breakfast was poor.we booked for eight nights.we had to leave after two.
Review 115:the position of the hotel and the grounds.
Review 116:booked into basement room looking onto wall, 1st floor room requested at booking, changed to upstairs room, very noisy from traffic through the night, mattress very hard, amounted to restless night. breakfast very good except haddock looked like piece of shoe leather. please provide adequate milk for tea making in the room.
Review 117:swimming pool was lovely but not open as timetabled. views lovely, convenient for town, staff generally helpful. clearly a very popular hotel and doing their best for their clientelle.
Review 118:Room, 211, was unbearably hot. It overlooked two roads so opening the windows was not an option. Extremely loud creaking floorboards by someone scuttling along the corridors between 1.40am and 2.50am were not conducive to a good night's sleep.
Review 119:Location superb for visiting surrounding areas of interest. Beautiful gardens.
Review 120:Our bed was in need of replacement and gave three uncomfortable nights sleep.
Review 121:The welcome and consistent approach to the treatment of visitors. Peaceful and calm atmosphere. Laid back but caring nature of the whole staff.
Review 122:Really squeaky uncomfortable bed. Not very soundproof, other customers making a lot of noise early in the morning.
Review 123:Location, grounds are very pretty, staff are helpful.
Review 124:It wasn't made clear that the hotel was part of the Vision Group of hotels specially for the blind and we found this upsetting. I was travelling with my 4 year old granddaughter and there were no other young persons at the hotel.
Review 125:The grounds of the hotel were good.
Review 126:did not anticipate dogs for the blind, however they were absolutely no trouble.
Review 127:easy parking. extensive matured gardens. plenty of space in both rooms and hotel,
Review 128:Bed too soft, hotel could do with repainting inside especially the corridors. Did not realise this was a hotel adapted for visually impaired people but this was not a problem for us. Slightly dated hotel.
Review 129:Comfortable hotel in good location. Good value
Review 130:The bathroom smelt of damp and had mould in the shower. Tiles coming off the wall. Toilet brush disgusting. Sash window stuck in bathroom. Single beds zipped together not a proper double and uncomfortable. Standard of room and furniture closer to £40 room not £119! Breakfast staff slow and needed to ask for bowls and juice glasses and had to find staff to take our order.
Review 131:Gardens were nice and near the centre.
Review 132:Staff very friendly .was on a stay for dog show in Exeter 5 dogs .Garden was beautiful and lead out onto main stretch .breakfast was fresh and plenty Shower was piping hot water rooms large .will book if need to go show next year
Review 133:Meant to be pet friendly guide dogsacceptable in restaurant pet dogs not allowed no mention on this fact on their web-site quick enough to take money when you check also 13 pound for dog not allowed in restaurant he eats sleeps and poos the same as a guide dogs.one guide was that well behaved tried to hump our lab breakfast on first morning had in room ok but not good missed out on toast and juice no salt pepper complained nexted morning put in side room lack of service felt second class if you love your pet and won,t to dine here give DONT
Review 134:Room ok very big
Review 135:Booked in Feb for August for our 45th Anniversay booked a special room with se view. Arrived the room was bog standard family room with single bed and cot. To see the sea we had to poke our heads out of the window the room didnt have balcony or bed coverings as shown on the net. We asked to be moved and the only room was in the attic that was worse. The Manager was polite and helpful and on the morning of our Anniversay the waitress handed me some flowers and a card which was a nice thought. We only ate in one night but I felt the menu very restricted there was no chicken on it at all which I found strange.
Review 136:The food was good. Staff very nice to the blind people and their dogs.
Review 137:Wrong room given, shower over the bath unusable as too small. No infromation given regarding breakfast arrangements and no table on both mornings.
Review 138:Location & gardens
The Fine Print
