Reviews for Mytton and Mermaid
Review 1:Room was comfortable, but not special and towels were horrible- very small and scratchy! The food was the lowest point- my caesar salad was really tasteless, apart from the overpowering smell of lots of anchovies. The breakfast too, also wasn't amazing and left me slightly gagging!
Review 2:Location is stunning and staff very nice.
Review 3:Friendly and efficient reception staff. Emailed to check I was aware there would be Christmas parties in the hotel on the night of my stay. Warm welcome and warm room with choice of teas and coffees etc. Evening meal and breakfast excellent. Views of river from bedroom. Parking plentiful, safe and easy.
Review 4:Cold bedroom - no CH on arrival or in morning. Worn and old mattress on bed. Bathroom fittings loose and unsecured eg toilet seat, shower head, toilet roll holder, taps.
Review 5:Great location, beautiful setting.
Review 6:The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and good value. The large wood burner in the bar was very welcoming. Would recommend to all.
Review 7:This is a list in no apparent order. Cold plates, not acceptable with hot dishes. Domestic staff traipsing about with armfuls of dirty linen whilst I supposed to be enjoying my breakfast, similarly cleaners mopping the floor in plain sight and lastly lingering miasma of Febreze in bedroom and stairwells,
Review 8:Like most country hotels experience staff is hard to come by. M & M's staff are mostly enthusiastic and pleasant enough, but not as skilled as they might be, however an acceptable experience marred by little.
Review 9:Traffic noise (room5), narrow stairs. Room was quite hot and windows not controllable. Lovely windows but would benefit from a paint job as would the ones in the bathroom. All part of the quaintness of a listed building !
Review 10:The view and ambience. the evening meal and breakfast were very good and waiting staff in both bar and restaurant efficient and professional. The bathroom was spotless. Reception staff friendly and helpful.
Review 11:Wifi was terrible in room! I stayed for a work trip so could not get much work done! lovey place but do not stay if you plan to do work!
Review 12:The staff were very friendly and helpful, I wanted room service and could pick anything from the menu. Also very sweet touch off loose tea and homemade flapjacks in room.
Review 13:Nearby road very busy so some road noise, poor shower ( in an otherwise excellent bathroom) muzak in restaurant on an evening spoiling an otherwise excellent atmosphere.
Review 14:Pretty location , excellent food and drink at a reasonable cost.
Review 15:Unfortunately there was a problem with the hot water on the last morning of our stay, so we had to forego our shower.
Review 16:Lovely location by the river, friendly helpful staff.
Review 17:Cracked tiles in bathroom cobwebs from tops of windows to flower arrangements on window sill obviously not being moved to clean up
Review 18:Staff very pleasant .location was central for town etc. beautiful views surrounding hotel.
Review 19:Shower was loud and water was not hot enough. over priced food - even snacks are expensive (£14 for a burger?) Over powering air fresheners in hallways
Review 20:The surrounding scenery and the room was nice. The complementary flapjacks were a nice touch (but should be a note saying what they are and if they are homemade etc.) and wide variety of teas on offer.
Review 21:Beds in Wroxeter room a bit hard, pillows also. Wifi was patchy.
Review 22:A fine old building located by the Severn, with riverbank gardens. Liked the traditional decor. Very good dinner and breakfast, everything freshly made. Friendly staff.
Review 23:Windows broken so no air in room. Not shown breakfast menu but asked what we wanted while still waiting to be seated. Left note in room about the wedding party and got the groom's name incorrect!
Review 24:Comfortable bed. Beautiful location. Quality of food was good.
Review 25:The fire doors on the stairs were a little difficult to get open and around, especially hazardous as the stairs are quite narrow and steep. The carpets on the stairs could do with a clean!
Review 26:Quiet location on the banks for the River Severn, just outside Shrewsbury but only a few minutes drive away. Room was comfortable, and bigger than the average single room. I was attending a funeral and the staff were great in helping print off directions to the crematorium. I had dinner in the bar, which was lovely (good helping too so I didn't eat it all!). Room was very clean.
Review 27:only issue was closeness outside my room window of courtyard table where smoking allowed and lack of a view due to being in stable block
Review 28:very comfy beds and attention to detail within the room with a range of teas/toiletries/tasteful décor
Review 29:For 5 people, it would have been good to have an additional shower room but this did not spoil a relaxing break.
Review 30:A lovely break in a charming cottage, close to the hotel so it was easy to use the restaurant and facilities.
Review 31:Mytton and Mermaid was a true gem of a place not far from Shrewsbury. I was a little hesitant to stay here at first as there were no photos of the rooms, only the outside of the building and the restaurant, but we were absolutely delighted with the entire stay!
Review 32:breakfast starting at 7-15, for a travelling exec a bit earlier would be better!
Review 33:very large executive room, excellent quality of bed, great outside garden which was a bonus with the weather, food excellent quality and value for money
Review 34:Some road noise & it would have been nice if there had been bar snacks available
Review 35:Really well situated just outside Shrewsbury on the edge of the river with plenty of car parking. Excellent accommodation with comfy beds and good restaurant with helpful staff.
Review 36:Woeful wifi it didn't work at all There was a lot of noise from the people in the next room and people passing my room after midnight although this wasn't the fault of the hotel real
Review 37:The staff were great and the venue was super had a table of 15 in the restaurant we had pre ordered the food was excellent
Review 38:Being in a courtyard room can feel a little exposed and be a bit noisy as you're quite near the dining area. The extractor fan in the bathroom was also a bit irritating as it didn't turn off and the continual hum did threaten to give me a headache. But absolutely nothing otherwise!
Review 39:I've stayed at the Mytton and Mermaid before and came back because I knew I would get quality. The rooms are lovely - comfortable and clean, the food is delicious and the staff lovely. I particularly love the variety of teas and coffees in the room - and added flapjack's and brownies.
Review 40:No wifi, poor tv signal, (BBCs not available) some of the food at dinner was awful.
Review 41:Lovely helpful staff. Good breakfast but not included. Bedroom very nice.
Review 42:Nothing bad, however, I was in room 2 and it could be a bit noisy on a busy night as it is next to the large garden with lovely furniture that people could sit out talking until the early hours. I can see how noise could be a problem in other rooms as well and perhaps the hotel could advise on quiet rooms. The reason for the noise is because the public spaces are so pleasant and you would want to stay out and enjoy the surroundings.
Review 43:I thought this was a superb hotel, lovely location right next to the river. The room was superb and the food was fantastic. Seriously. I was nearly put off this place by reviews on booking.com. I am lucky in that I choose my own hotels and stay in 2-3 each week, this was as good as I have stayed in this year, in fact it's my current leader!!
Review 44:Although not a real problem we had popped out to buy a toothbrush (always forget something) and upon returning couldn't get into the car park. We parked elsewhere with the help of a local.
Review 45:The location was a real treat. The river with ample seating alongside was just lovely, in fact the outside seating in general was great. Ranging from leather sofas in the courtyard which were a quaint selection, to rattan sets on the large green at the front! The room was very tidy and the coffee and tea facilities were plentiful and a great range.
Review 46:Massive superior room with very comfy 4 poster bed and well appointed bathroom. Great vibe in the pub/restaurant and excellent pub food/nibbles. Sensible prices
Review 47:Wi-Fi wasn't very fast - but that may not be the hotels fault!
Review 48:Lovely stop off on the way back up north. Bar staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely friendly place all round. Didn't have dinner this time but will next - looked delicious.
Review 49:Internet not available for most of stay. Radiators in room only adequate and we needed supplementary heating. However, it was very cold weather during our stay.
Review 50:Excellent food and beers. Rooms clean and comfortable. A great location on the river and convenient for touring area. Staff attentive and welcoming.
Review 51:A little overpriced for food - which I thought was good but not excellent. Interior decoration of superior king size room probably needed a bit of renovation for that price of room.
Review 52:Good food - lovely period building beautiful location on river. Excellent staff. Charming, old and full of character.
Review 53:Bathroom cold & a little mouldy. Didn't expect to be in the annex which we felt was overpriced, however £20 discount given.
Review 54:Friendly staff, clean room.
Review 55:The courtyard room was not suitable for someone with movement disorder. The steps out of the shower were high and potentially slippery and no rail. The double bed was extremely uncomfortable and Room 17 was small and gloomy with no view and dirty nets.
Review 56:Lots of tea and coffee varieties, bathrobes, homemade biscuits. The lounge and bar and covered courtyard area were all very attractive and close to the river
Review 57:Claustrophobic room, small, dark, airless. I was travelling with my sister and we were both disappointed. The advert said 'rooms had views' and were spacious. Neither of these applied to the room we were given
Review 58:Comfortable beds
Review 59:Where to start?- Room looked lovely but needs redecorating and cobwebs removing from the bedroom and bathroom ceilings. Main issue was the noise of the music from the bar filtering into the room from below. The bar staff seem to get on well, so much so, that after the live act left they put music back on but at a higher volume. At 11:30 pm we called reception to ask what time the music would stop. The phone was answered in an odd way with the person apologising as he thought we were staff. The music then started again at 7:30 am. In between the noise of the bar & music we were kept awake by the people in the room above who took several trips to the toilet and enjoyed the shower. We know this as all you hear is rushing water. Then at 7:45, they hoovered reception! It would have been polite to have informed us prior to booking of the location of this room and the noise associated with it. As we weren't, we booked what looked great but was the worst hotel we have stayed in, in years. We were rushed at dinner time. When we checked out we weren't asked if we enjoyed our stay - wonder why? Would have informed the staff but perhaps they just don't care. Save your money & stay somewhere nice. Extremely disappointed and tired doesn't really cover how we feel.
Review 60:Free parking available and the bar had a friendly atmosphere (shame they think its 24 hour). Lovely looking 'suite' and the live Friday night act.
Review 61:Poor night's sleep due to noise on the front lawn way past midnight.Forgetting to book a taxi despite been given 3 days notice Breakfastchef did not turn up so no cooked breakfast available. Even as we wereleaving at 8:45 a chef still had not been found to cover. Windows andbathroom structure could have been cleaner
Review 62:The location was lovely. The rooms were a good size and the buildinghad character
Review 63:I didn't like the high windows I couldn't see out made me feel closed in but as I only stayed 1 night I could put up with it. I sat out in the courtyard until it was time to get ready to go out.
Review 64:Had a room just off the courtyard in the stables it was clean and the bed was comfortable although bathroom was a little dated. Good selection of teas and coffees in room.
Review 65:Dinner and breakfast were both excellent. Bedrooms are small but very comfortable. Lots of narrow stairs, not suitable for people with limited mobility. Very busy on a Friday night, full of locals having dinner. Very pleasant buzz. Fine selection of draught beers including excellent Guinness. Lovely grounds and riverside setting. 5 minutes drive to Shrewsbury town centre.
Review 66:Room was in annex, small, dark, same level as carpark through small window, headlights shining in, door opened onto public courtyard. Not private. Not advised of this, thought rooms were all main hotel. No view, not much daylight. No running cold water in wash basin. had to pay for breakfast even though said on menu breakfast included in room rate. Charges not at all clear. £120 very poor value. no reduction because of room faults. Advised to write in but received no reply.
Review 67:Location of hotel very pleasant, food good.
Review 68:Lovely scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for breakfast - I paid separately as breakfast wasn't included in my deal but these were probably the best scrambled eggs I have ever had.
Review 69:Outside the window needs cleaning. The window was painted over, being just a bit open, so I could not close it completely.
Review 70:It is easy to find. Located on the main road, but there is not much traffic, so I was not bothered by the noise. Nice fresh food served. It is charming.
Review 71:Shower a bit difficult to regulate, towels too small (bath sheet rather than bath towel should be the norm in every hotel) Inadequate ventilation in the bathroom.
Review 72:The rooms were well presented. Care had been taken to provide small details. Furnishings were of a high standard. Easy parking and the food was excellent.
Review 73:As a single female traveller, ground floor rooms were not secure if the window was open.
Review 74:Loose tea and a teapot with a strainer built in. Cafetiere coffee. All part of the "tray in the room" service.
Review 75:Our room had a view of the carpark whole others got a river view!
Review 76:Friendly staff excellent food and just across the road from a National Trust property!
Review 77:Unfortunately the Mytton Mermaid is at the side of a very busy road, which is not too noticeable until when trying to sleep, if you have a road facing room. There is no air conditioning in the rooms and so the window has to be left open on warm nights.
Review 78:The Mytton Mermaid is a very nice, although 'tired' hotel. We stayed for three nights and were impressed with the staff, overall comfort and reasonable food and prices. The location is very nice and also pretty awful, refer opposite.
Review 79:The booking was mixed up, even though made it clear on booking.com. Luckily rang prior to arriving and sorted out the confusion. The communal areas in the stable block where our accommodation was could do with a redecoration as looking tired, plaster coming off etc.. Room hot at night, (was a warm day). Little bit of rising damp. (ground floor room no.15). Could do with a brighter colour. Slightly disappointing evening meal. Given the Sunday lunch time menu for evening, so all the left overs. Beef was nice, roast potatoes obviously cooked in morning, so pretty rank by the time reheated, (several times?). Not much finesse on the cooking front. Fish over salted as came with samphire which is a naturally very salty vegetable so almost inedible. Would have been nice to be offered an evening menu. Just felt being served the leftovers from whatever wasn't eaten earlier in day.
Review 80:Stunning position, by river with stunning stone bridge, opposite 4000 acres of National Trust Attingham Park with stately home. Beautiful church and grounds to rear. Plenty of parking. Dog friendly. Lovely grounds, including large front garden to enjoy for drinks/food in summer. Nice pub style restaurant inside. Very authentic. Very friendly staff.
Review 81:Bathroom could do with a little maintenance and attention. Why oh why use plastic packs of English mustard to go with aged prime cut locally sourced beef steak !!
Review 82:Historic location by the River Severn and old world charm of the building and interior. Good food and ales - locally sourced. Friendly helpful staff - although their youth and inexperience sometimes showed.Tea and coffee in bedroom also had interesting & unusual varieties from local merchants. Lovely bedroom.
Review 83:There was nothing to dislike about the hotel.
Review 84:The location of the hotel is excellent being just out of the city centre. The room was comfortable and the bathroom well appointed.
Review 85:Alarm in the room went off at midnight which woke us up with a start, staff were very apologetic to be fair. Also staff congregated on the front lawn just below our window and were a little loud until 1.30am so we couldn't sleep til they had gone. Shame because it spoiled our stay a little bit.
Review 86:Very friendly and helpful staff at Reception and in the restaurant. Food was tasty. Room was tastefully furnished and comfortable. Lots of different ground coffees and teas in the room including a teapot and cake which was a lovely touch. Cannot comment on the breakfast as we were room only option.
Review 87:I thought continental breakfast rather over- priced.
Review 88:The hotel was splendid in every way - food, ambience, comfort and had the added surprises of being next to the river, right opposite a National Trust property and with an ancient jewel of a church in the grounds. I thought that it might be noisy at night, but that wasn't the case after 11pm
Review 89:rooms could do with redecorating and the carpet could do with a shampoo - some equipment not working - should have had breakfast included for the price they charged
Review 90:lovely old manor type house lots of old world charm -good bar and dining room-interesting menu -good location for Shrewsbury if you are in a car
Review 91:Road noise was significant. Restaurant food was disappointing.

Review 97:Fantastic location by the river Severn. Good restaurant with affordable food.
Review 98:The fact that such a nice hotel was dog friendly. The good choice on the menu. The staff were very friendly and helpful
Review 99:Noise from function guests on second evening
Review 100:Very friendly staff. Character of building
Review 101:No formal dining room
Review 102:Staff are excellent. Surroundings are very good
Review 103:Room was quite cluttered with furniture that wasn't really needed. WiFi signal is not the best.

Review 106:Nothing

Review 109:Position very attractive by River Severn
Review 110:Excellent location
Review 111:Luxurious room
Review 112:a traditional style hotel with a good friendly atmosphere. Informal with excellent food and fairly priced.
Review 113:everything to be honest. Girl on reception was very cute also, never hurts to have a nice view.
Review 114:Good food nice courtyard area and right next to the river. Excellent and friendly staff, just wish I could have stayed longer
Review 115:Extra charge for tea and coffee with breakfast. Usually included! Room in need of a little TLC!

Review 130:A long wait for our cooked breakfast. The bathroom in room 20 needs an update.
Review 131:The general ambiance
Review 132:Lovely building, with a great atmosphere. We ate at the bar, open fire and candle lit tables, both nights where the food was local and very good.
