Reviews for Drapers Hall Restaurant & Boutique Rooms
Review 1:Limited car parking options
Review 2:Went out of their way to help with the car parking situation. Lovely breakfast and friendly conversations. Fantastic breakfast room, with 17th century tables etc
Review 3:Only downside is the lack of parking at the hotel. We had to park in the main covered car park in town, although only £7 for 24 hours.
Review 4:Fantastic old hotel bang in the centre of Shrewsbury. 15th Century coaching house with just a few bedrooms means that you get that extra special attention. Staff were fantastic. Breakfast outstanding. And they sell real ale!
Review 5:Could do with a few allocated parking spaces or at least be able to pre book at the nearby car park as it is at such a premium around the hotel.
Review 6:Fantastic building and our room was gorgeous. The breakfast was delicious too.
Review 7:Nothing really. We couldn't get a table in the restaurant for Saturday evening, however that was our fault; we should have booked in advance.
Review 8:The staff were amazing. All staff communicated well and seemed really happy to be working. Jason especially is worth a personal mention. He looked after us when we checked in. He was very personable, helpful and attentive. He gave a brilliant first impression. The breakfast menu offered a good choice. Breakfast itself was well presented, fresh and served with a cheery smile. The scrambled eggs and smoked salmon was lovely. I asked for a wedge of lemon to squeeze over the salmon; this was delivered straight away. Overall a lovely stay. We would definitely recommend Draper's Hall. Thank you!
Review 9:No names or numbers on room doors was confusing other guests tried to enter our room!
Review 10:Location excellent, room very clean, staff attentive to our needs
Review 11:Small bar area that doubled as hotel reception didn't create a good first impression. A meal that didn't live up to expectations but as there were a lot of people dining there obviously they thought that food was OK. Some staff were very good and professional, others were not up to expected standard
Review 12:Good bedroom in a very old hotel, slightly difficult entrance to bathroom. Very good breakfast but at £15 should be included in price of room. Great location very close to the centre. Excellent dining room with original features
Review 13:The parking is an issue though
Review 14:This is a really quirky building. I had the gold room. Staff were helpful and friendly. Dinner was great. Highly recommend the food.
Review 15:-
Review 16:Friendliness of staff, they did go above and beyond to acomodate my needs - outstanding service The building itself and the rooms are utterly beautiful.
Review 17:The room "wool suite" was very noisy with a boiler/water tank running throughout the night and each time someone used a tap it got even louder. The camp bed which completed the triple room was small and uncomfortable. What little service we had from staff was rushed and at the same time incredibly slow (breakfast took over an hour to arrive). Our concerns expressed on checking out were dismissed in yet another rush and we were told that there was no manager available as they were fishing.
Review 18:The location was very central, the building was beautiful. Our suite looked lovely.
Review 19:Room a bit small but down under we are used to lots of space
Review 20:The staff all very helpful and Jadon went way beyond his job description to be helpful. As did the pretty waitress whose name I cannot recall.
Review 21:The doors were locked my first night staying there at 8pm I went out for a cigarette and got locked out as no one told me. Had to bang on the door until another guest heard and let me in
Review 22:Nothing to dislike all perfect .
Review 23:It's very near to shops , fantastic building , lovely apartment very comfy bed and lovely and clean we had the green room. Staff were very friendly and professional and the food was amazing top marks to the chef . We will definitely be going back. Well done Drapers you made our stay fantastic and thank you for the champagne glasses you loaned us lovely touch giving us free strawberries to go with it . Oh if you are disabled and have a parking blue badge you can park in the disabled bay at top of the street for free plus stay as long as you like even over night.
Review 24:No lounge facility. (Hence the title of Restaurant with Rooms!). Some rooms had nowhere to hang clothes. (We were a group of 5 couples).
Review 25:Central location and very welcoming and efficient staff especially Erica and Lewis. Very interesting and qwirky building, but who was the manager? Food was very good.
Review 26:very dated, tired and dusty furrniture. previous occupier had written dirty in the greasy dust on the extractor fan over oven.Suite is badly designed. One chair to sit on,or bed setee at a right angle to television. No hair dryer ,no wardrobe. The main problem was the cleanliness.Badly stained carpet, dirty fridge, no cloths,no t towel. This is not 5 star accomodation. would never stay in the hotel again.
Review 27:the location
Review 28:The bathroom supplies were not full and only a small amount in bottles. Bathroom door did not close fully.
Review 29:Even though the kitchen had closed the chef went through to make us a sandwich. The gin selection was great. Staff were fantastic.
Review 30:Fantastic location in an historic building in the centre of Shrewsbury, literally minutes from the castle, station, shopping etc. Dinner was absolutely superb and made all the more special by the 16th century dining room.
Review 31:No hair dryer, no tissues, no toiletries in Bathroom! Clothes hangers from the cleaners, Not good enough! Needs a woman's touch.
Review 32:Food very good
Review 33:Uncomfortable toilet seat!!! And broken flush button was 'fixed' with tape.
Review 34:Beautiful historic building and lovely room. Breakfast was exceptionally good. Staff very friendly.
Review 35:Everything was perfect.
Review 36:Beautiful renovated old black & white building. Wonderful old features retained but bathrooms & kitchen very modern & slick. Other parts like bedrooms, public buildings remain as they were.
Review 37:Very friendly and helpful staff. Although the restaurant was serving a reduced menu, what we did have was excellent. Great location, comfortable and clean rooms. WILL stay again and recommend to others. TY
Review 38:We was offered an evening menu early in afternoon as we was asked if we was staying for tea? We chose what we wanted for our evening meal, when we turned up for tea we was shown a completely different menu which we didn't want as the food on the other menu was no longer available? If we would of known this we would of ate out that evening, that was the only problem really.
Review 39:Very helpful staff, made us very welcome.
Review 40:Bed horrible, small and very hard. Bathroom not cleaned nor were waste bins in the room emptied.
Review 41:Excellent location in centre of Shrewsbury and very quiet at the same time. Great breakfast and friendly, helpful staff.
Review 42:The bed was a bit squeaky and I'm not in favour of charging £12 to park in their own car-park.
Review 43:Central location is perfect for discovering Shrewsbury. Excellent staff; well-mannered, courteous; attentive. Great food and a stylish ambience in the restaurant and rooms.
Review 44:Breakfast the next morning wasn't great. Cereals provided to 'help yourself' - but no bowls, spoons or milk. Ordered off the menu, the taste was fantastic, but waited 20 mins for poached eggs. Staff member was ok, she explained it was her first breakfast shift - hence why things went wrong. She couldn't tell us whether all was paid up etc.
Review 45:Great location, quirky building
Review 46:Would have loved a TV in the bedroom as well as living area- but that's just being picky!!
Review 47:Unique and quirky nature of the room and decor - loved the hobbit doorway into en suite!!
Review 48:Some staff still training and left to do more difficult tasks not yet trained in and customer had to wait until more experienced staff was found.
Review 49:The hotel had lots of old world feel to it with a lot of history.
Review 50:Given 5star lacking in little luxuries maybe - refreshments were bog standard - no tea and plastic milk - a fridge and fresh milk? No information in the room about the place and the town - just three out of date programmes Asked for a business card on check out but they don't have them?
Review 51:Great staff, place and room Love the history - the dining room is amazing Excellent food and service
Review 52:self catering suites had no cutlery or crockery available. laid out in boutique 60`s style, furniture in very small seating area vey uncomfortable and low to ground. hopeless if you have bad joints or overweight. very noisy from bar outdoor area below bedrooms until 1pm. smell from kitchen permeates living area morning noon and night. Ok if you love smell of garlic. nowhere to hang clothes. no airconditioning.
Review 53:ambience great staff
Review 54:The room was small, not cleaned well - hoovering mainly. The light shade had glass balls some of which were missing - not major I know but stuff you notice. There was external noise we think from a refigerator, they was a 'cooking oil' smell with the windows open when we arrived. £134 for b+b a bit steep, it's more a £100-110.
Review 55:Great bar, friendly staff and good breakfast
Review 56:There was a problem with the bath leaking through the fittings of the plug hole so hopefully they'll sort that in the Teal room, it wasn't relaxing having to keep filling it up ! The luxury toiletries consisted of one squirty bottle on the wall by the bath and one by the sink, a shower cap and two ear buds and one piece of cotton wool - we had to go out and buy bath bubbles as they were stuck to the wall. The room was small, I guess we didn't get the suite as we had booked a reduced rate, but it was adequate. It is probably worth phoning to see what your room rate includes before booking. We paid £15 for the breakfast and it was ok - I wouldn't do it again. Although it was a lovely a big bed, the mattress was pretty uncomfortable.
Review 57:We arrived early to see if we could drop our bags and the staff couldn't be more helpful. This continued through our stay. We had a meal in the restaurant in the evening and it really was excellent. The entire place was very clean. Massive bed !
Review 58:Not aware we needed to book a parking space prior to arrival (okay in the end, but a bit stressful). No slip-mat in the bath which meant my husband was unable to use the shower.
Review 59:Having a room plus a sitting-room. Ideal and pleasant location.
Review 60:room size-difficult to have 2 people moving in the room at the same time not a deal breaker as it was limited to 45 non sleeping minutes in the room
Review 61:service ambience and food
Review 62:Parking - needs to be pre-arranged and I did not notice this on site before booking (mobile website is more focused towards to the restaurant than the hotel). Outside you can park out of hours (6pm to 8am) and for one hour directly outside hotel during the rest of time. Worth bearing in mind.
Review 63:Lovely room, soft (low) bed, friendly & helpful staff. Great, central location.
Review 64:Not a bad experience, but the noise levels in the restaurant at dinner were deafening- no fittings to help reduce the decibel level to comfort.
Review 65:Wonderfully courteous helpful staff, with a good choice of food for both breakfast and dinner.
Review 66:Bed was really not good. The mattress was uncomfortable, the bed squeaked a lot... Probably wouldn't book here again, but pretty much completely based on the bed
Review 67:Wonderful staff, stunning building and delicious breakfasts
Review 68:Room was a bit quirky but comfortable WiFi didn't work everywhere
Review 69:Staff were fantastic a credit to the owners , food was really excellent nothing was too much trouble Would return again
Review 70:I would have preferred to have a lockable door on the bathroom.
Review 71:Greeted by friendly, helpful staff and shown to a beautifully furnished room (gold room). Very relaxed visit and ideal location.
Review 72:Nothing
Review 73:The staff were great and the food was very good. The location could not be bettered. Shrewsbury is well worth a visit. Some smashing little pubs.
Review 74:Limited parking although I did get a space if arriving late this might not have been the case.
Review 75:Everything was well delivered a strong recommendation to stay
Review 76:Only 1 member of staff at breakfast, took an hour to sit, wait, eat. Only thing to let down entire stay.
Review 77:Staff very helpful on arrival, sorted bags etc as we were early. Walnut Room was fantastic, bed fabulous!
Review 78:The location was perfect for exploring Shrewsbury. The Hotel and bedroom was beautiful and the staff were lovely. The breakfast was the best we have had in any hotel. One member of staff (Grant) chatted to us and helped us to find somewhere to eat and other places to visit and was genuinely helpful and interested.
Review 79:Didnt get notifed that needed to book restaurant a week in advance so couldnt eat there, room was an apartment, didnt realise and thought was suite as name suggests, pointless paying for kitchen didnt use. Chairs in lounge area uncomfortable.
Review 80:Classy room, great breakfast, attentive and helpful staff
Review 81:booked at last minute and was amazed to stay in such an interesting location and the staff were very helpful and friendly. We stayed in Gold Room which was unique experience. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place
Review 82:We drank are wine in our room went down stairs to enjoy the lovely hotel and its history we asked for a table ready to enjoy the birthday weekend. Only to hear so we are full no tables available !,but we are residence we are staying here ! So no tables you will have eat somewhere else ! Where ? Just walking around you will find a nice restruant. Really !!
Review 83:The location was very good the allowed us to drop off are cases early they showed us the room I asked for flowers and wine to ready on arrival as it was partners birthday the flowers were amazing .
Review 84:We dined in the restaurant which had a very limited menu choice. Much prefer just plain food so ordered cod loin with risotto. Absolutely swimming in liquid; not as a risotto should be. Sent it back and it was not much better upon return so left. Item was removed from my bill so credit to the hotel. Breakfast was also a severe let down with limited choices again and the cooked breakfast was extremely disappointing.
Review 85:We loved the location and the quirkiness of the hotel. Extremely clean and the staff were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble.
Review 86:A bit too hot in the room believe it or not, even with the Velux windows open! The church bell dinging every hour! Breakfast wasn't served until 9:00am
Review 87:The 'Wool Room' was beautiful - it had a separate lounge to enjoy relaxing in. The suite had all the original features which made it really quirky. The door going into the bathroom was amazing!!
Review 88:Very poor quality entertainment system in room and bad smell coming from sofa cushion which was not dealt with properly when brought to hotels attention.
Review 89:Amazing bath and bathroom and the food was excellent.
Review 90:Gorgeous hotel, spotlessly clean with very helpful staff and amazing food! Big enough to be professional, small enough to be personal. We will return!
Review 91:Wifi coverage in the rooms isn't great.
Review 92:The hotel is fantastic, the mix of old and ultra modern. The staff are extremely helpful and if you don't eat there you are missing out.
Review 93:Telly wouldn't get BBC1 or 2, nor Radio4. Shrewsbury is a beautiful place totally ruined by traffic. Needs a radical transport solution to enable it to be become a wonderful place to visit: instead it's dominated by cars, roads are hard to cross, there is constant traffic noise and fumes and very narrow pavements. Come on Shrewsbury, bite the bullet and become a place worth visiting!
Review 94:Everything really. Very comfortable, good service, excellent food nicely served with a bit of flair, beautiful 17th century building, good central location, handy for the station, very friendly.
Review 95:Parking costs & lack of Wifi - but neither was a major problem.
Review 96:Loved it all - the staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. The building was amazing with so much of the original structure and features remaining. I loved the modern furnishings which mixed in beautifully with the period pieces. The Morrocan terrace was pretty & the well stocked bar was impactful to say the least! Parking & Wifi were the only negatives. Location was fantastic - just a step away from everything that you would come to Shrewsbury to see.
Review 97:We came by train but it's worth pointing out that this place is very hard to park close to unless you know your way round the one-way system!
Review 98:Initially I wasn't sure about the 'boutique rooms' description but it was entirely appropriate. Drapers Hall is really a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel per se, but the rooms (or ours, the Walnut Room at least) really made an impression. Beautifully decorated and furnished, idiosyncratic but not wilfully wacky - and a lovely, huge bed. The bathroom was very modern and well-equipped, with a great shower. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, even though we didn't eat there as we had other plans. The restaurant looked fabulous (again, impecccably furnished and decorated). This place really stands out in Shrewsbury as different and memorable.
Review 99:The service at breakfast was painfully slow - we had to wait 45 minutes. Didn't like the cheap instant coffee in the room.
Review 100:Room was comfortable and the staff were friendly.
Review 101:The only slight downside was that we arrived at 1 o'clock on Monday afternoon and found the place was closed. This is because the restaurant is not open on a monday. I know our booking stated that check-in was from 3 o'clock but it is unusual to find a place with rooms completely closed and not be able to drop your bags off before your room is ready. Not a real complaint but something to note if you arrive on a Monday.
Review 102:Beautiful decor - quirky but sympathetic to the buildings age and history. Rooms spacious - comfy and beautifully furnished. I wouldn't change a thing. The food and service in the restaurant was excellent. The staff were friendly and could not do enough for you
Review 103:leaving to go home!
Review 104:The most comfy beds and every detail thought of. We stayed in the walnut room which we loved, a mix of classic antiques with modern comforts. Really well done.
Review 105:Poor wifi and free view tv signal.
Review 106:Excellent attentive staff during our stay, lovely boutique, quirky style bedroom, excellent location and to save the best till last...absolutely amazing food, one if the best evening meals we've ever had followed by a'la carte breakfast!! Thank you
Review 107:No wifi reception in my room, on street parking, no staff around when I left in the morning; had to leave the key in the room and come back later to pick up my invoice
Review 108:Quirky rooms, comfy bed, friendly staff and good location
Review 109:wifi availability is not good.
Review 110:We were greeted politely by a young man who helped us with our bags and explained the car parking arrangements. The hotel is quirky and we just love quirky. all the staff were polite and most helpful a t all times and did their best to make our stay a nice one. We cannot praise them enough.
Review 111:Potential guests should remember this is not a hotel - it's a five star restaurant with rooms. The rooms are not five star. Despite their beauty, they are small. There was no shaving point in our bathroom, no mini bar, and the non-closing bathroom door and humped bed seemed simultaneously to encourage and discourage intimacy. Most depressing of all, we went to house hunt, and booked on the promise of wifi throughout the hotel. While we were there, the wifi was simply unusable. You could get a brief signal sitting on the toilet, but that rapidly faded, along with one's patience. We pointed this out to staff, but nothing was done while we were there.
Review 112:This is a historic building, ideally located in the heart of Shrewsbury and boasting many attractive period features. Staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms are tastefully kitted out in wonderful antique furnishing and decor. We would recommend to anyone who puts these things first.
Review 113:Two rooms are above the bar and back courtyard. The others are perhaps more private. This wasn't a problem for me since the bar was pretty silent from 9:30 p.m. onwards.
Review 114:This is really a restaurant with a few charming, comfortable rooms. The food in the restaurant was very good and it was nice to simply climb up the stairs after dinner. The location is right in the historic part of Shrewsbury and within walking distance of the train station if you've got a suitcase on wheels.
Review 115:surly service at breakfast noise at night from drunks heading home as warm - windows were open paying for parking on a Sunday morning
Review 116:location character of the building friendly check in got car park space outside
Review 117:Nothing - we love the truly individual nature of the whole experience.
Review 118:Everything! A very individual experience, great breakfast, stunning building, helpful and efficient service and an unusual but comfortable room - very different! We were sorry that we had to change our booking prior to arrival as we would have liked to stay for longer. We will definitely return.
Review 119:Breakfast not included in the price
Review 120:The Manager (excellent) The room The bed The bathroom The location Car Parking directly outside Quiet at night (except for the church bells which the hotel cant help)
Review 121:Drapers Hall is located on a very narrow road and parking is quite difficult. Fortunately, I had asked about parking when I booked and they had reserved a place for us. We ask to book a table at the restaurant but it was already fully booked. It is a popular place so book in advance. However, staff were delightful and pointed us in the direction of other good restaurants
Review 122:The staff were very helpful and very attentive. The hotel is simply full of character and history (from the 1600s), but very modern at the same time. A lovely blend of old and new. The bar was good as it was very modern and they have two lovely courtyards where you can sit outside (protected from the wind) till late at night. This is a very old building, so don't expect lifts - but the staff will carry your suitcases to your room. I was a little surprised with the room at first, as the bedroom furniture seemed to be all from the 1950s - then you realise it simply adds character. And the bed was lovely and comfy. We booked one of the suites so we had our own lounge and kitchen - still only 135 for the night including parking and breakfast for two. This was excellent and gave a really luxurious feel to our stay - 2 TVs as well! We could have stayed there much longer.
Review 123:There is no parking nearby, so if arriving by car, ask them to direct you to the public parking 6 blocks away. After 45+ yrs of int'l travel, I still do not understand why hoteliers do not provide good mattresses and down pillows! We are there for a good night's rest, not overnight torture.
Review 124:The location is ideal for exploring the town center - everything within 10 minute walk. The Inn is a tasteful mixture of the original 400+ yr old with modern bath and electric, etc. The staff is friendly and quite helpful. This is an ideal place for travelers seeking 'authentic' accommodations.
Review 125:The food was fantastic, well presented and well prepared. The restaurant was not busy, but still had good atmosphere and we felt very comfortable. The decor is thoughtful and respectful to the heritage of the building whilst still feeling fresh and modern, and not a little quirky.
Review 126:At breakfast (Sunday morning) a fellow diner felt it necessary to point out that we were not alone in the dining room. I felt the need to apologise for inconveniencing him. Perhaps if there had been newspapers to hand we would have immersed ourselves in them rather than "talk shop".
Review 127:The staff in particular were friendly and welcoming. The food and wine were super and the room beautifully furnished and the bathroom - just enough bling!
Review 128:Couldn't find any fault at all with the hotel except parking isn't the easiest and you really need to ring ahead to book that to ensure a parking spot. But then you shouldn't always expect to be able to park in the centre of a town so it's not a negative just something to be aware of.
Review 129:Beautiful room ( the Wool room) at the top of the building. Very sweet and cosy with a lovely homely feel. A pretty Alice in Wonderland door into the bathroom. Gorgeous home cooked breakfast and friendly helpful staff.
Review 130:Cramped hotel with no parking (this is a major problem in Shrewsbury). A lot of external noise. One of the worst arrivals I've ever had. Checked in by inexperienced, indifferent boy. Restaurant was closed, even though we booked. Room right above the bar, even though we requested a quiet one. Receptionist talking to his girlfriend outside. Told me to shut the window when I leaned out to ask him to stop. This in 28 degrees (obviously no air con). When I asked to speak with owner he was on holiday. Terrible.
Review 131:Efficient girl at breakfast (she seemed out of place here).
Review 132:The restaurant was closed due to work being carried out which was disappointing as one of my reasons for booking was for the food also another reason for booking was for the jacuzzi bath which upon arrival we were told was not working. I did check on this a few days prior but my telephone call was not retuened.
Review 133:Beautiful building full of character. Nice outdoor decking area.
Review 134:The view from the window of the room into a Backyard wasn´t pleasant
Review 135:The staaf had a very wellcoming attitude. The interior of the house was very attractive.
Review 136:Everything was great.
Review 137:Great room (more like an apartment really) with all you could wish for in comfort. Very friendly and helpful staff (we arrived before 09.00 just to drop our bags off and we were allowed into the room from then with no extra charge).
Review 138:The suite wasn't perfectly suitable for my 15 year old son and myself.
Review 139:Great staff, great location, good breakfast.
Review 140:Not many people in restaurant but still great food.
Review 141:Great food
Review 142:Fabulous room, very personalised staff attention and best hotel breakfast we have had (freshly cooked)
