Reviews for Royal Beacon Hotel
Review 1:There were some problems with the central heating and the shower valve in my room which were a little unfortunate but not serious.
Review 2:Excellent food, well presented. Tried the restaurant, bar meals and breakfast. All tasty, generous proportioned and very promptly served from a good menu with plenty of options.
Review 3:The single room was tiny and rather shabby with an uncomfortable bed and quite pricey.
Review 4:The food was very good indeed. Lovely breakfast and dinner and the staff are lovely.
Review 5:Some of the staff were a bit grumpy notably at breakfast.
Review 6:Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Location and views from hotel. Breakfast was delicious.
Review 7:not hotels fault really as the windows are very much in keeping with the style of property but it was a very windy night and they rattled quote a lot
Review 8:Warm friendly welcome, good value, and clean, comfortable room
Review 9:We arrived to find that we had to drive round and find a free parking space as the 4 or 5 spaces provided by the hotel were entirely inadequate. I was unimpressed with the note on their page advertizing free parking. Whilst it is, only too few are provided by the hotel. The room was hot. i know it's November, but it is quite mild and although I turned off both radiators, one of them failed to register this fact and pumped out more heat than was comfortable. Opening the window was also inadequate as there was no breeze.
Review 10:The room was spacious and clean and the bed comfortable. Breakfast was excellent - without doubt one of the best I've had at any hotel. The location was also very handy for the town.
Review 11:The room was very cold because it was next to the fire exit, the door of which was permanently open to the sky (it couldn't be closed as it was warped) at the top of the fire escape with the wind and rain blowing in. Judging by the paintwork of the fire exit door, the mould on the walls and the peeling wall paper of the fire exit area, it looked as if it had been open for a very long time. I was given a heater to use because of this problem and because the heating was only turned on 7-10am and 5-10pm.
Review 12:The staff were friendly, helpful and professional at all times. The location was perfect. The breakfast was very good.
Review 13:Unfortunately it was a very cold day and the central heating was not working. It turns out that the boiler to our floor had broken down so that we did not have heating or hot water. We had to ask to move rooms. This was a real shame as the 1st room was excellent. If this had not happened we would be rating it a lot higher.
Review 14:Good breakfast and location
Review 15:The central heating did not seem to be working in the late (cold) evening although it was the next morning.
Review 16:I liked the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. The room had all the required facilities and was spacious enough. Great central location.
Review 17:Very tired rooms needing complete refurbishment. Torn curtains, stained and worn carpets, pink, plastic bathroom suite, shaving light not working and very old furniture that is showing its age.
Review 18:Location of hotel and sea view. Comfortable mattress & pillows
Review 19:very friendly staff throughout the hotel.made to feel wanted as a guest.would happily stay again.only just getting over the breakfasts.(huge and good selection)
Review 20:Total mix up on room - staff unhelpful with booking even though I had paperwork to prove we should have a sea view and breakfast. Not only one member of staff but another the following day trying to charge us for breakfast!
Review 21:Situation good.
Review 22:Very bad for parking. It would be nice to have fresh fruit for Breakfast rather than tinned prunes, apricots and pineapple.
Review 23:Welcoming attentive staff/ Good comfortable bar.
Review 24:There is nothing to dislike!
Review 25:Just about everything. We were attending a wedding and the hotel was superb.Nothing was too much trouble and the staff dealt with our family beautifully. Kindness courtesy and efficiency were key. We were thrilled with everything. We would heartily recommend the hotel to anyone.
Review 26:Would have been nice to have a spare blanket as it got a little cold in the night. The pillows were quite hard for my liking - but I do have a neck problem so probably fine for most people
Review 27:Good size room, lovely bathroom and helpful staff.
Review 28:The loo seat was too close to the back and slammed down often, ut only a minor detail.
Review 29:The room had a table and two chairs, excellent! Lots of mirrors in the right places. All the staff were so polite and helpful, especially Joseph and the maitre d'.
Review 30:Unfortunately there was no wifi whilst we were staying and when we asked reception for details about it, the lady didn't apologise and just didn't really give any information. Also the bed sheet was the wrong size and kept coming off in the night.
Review 31:The bar tender was really polite and friendly and the location was perfect,
Review 32:The twin room we booked had 1 double bed and 2 single beds in a separate room .Plenty of tea/coffee/ hot chocolate/milk for that night and the morning. Just a great experience.
Review 33:The rooms could do with some refurbishment .
Review 34:The staff were excellent made you welcome nothing was to much trouble. The food was also excellent .This was our 4th stay .
Review 35:Parking was not adequate - Had to park on the road approx. 200yds from the hotel entrance Wi-Fi was dreadful
Review 36:The Breakfast was great The service was as should be expected The View from (sea view) the room was awesome (just wish there was a decent sunset at the time)
Review 37:Room was quite small but fine for what we needed for one night.
Review 38:Really comfy bed, staff very helpful, close to the pavilion. I looked at many hotels in Exmouth and this was the best, value for money, clean, and right location.
Review 39:A minor criticism . The decor of the hotel looks very tired and needs refurbishing .
Review 40:The staff were very attentive . The other guests were also very nice - friendly environment in which to relax.
Review 41:n/a
Review 42:fantastic view from our room, real cosy and warm feeling throughout, lovely food. visited 11 years ago and then again this month, really great to come back.
Review 43:Parking is limited so on street is necessary but wasn't too bad - Being "traditional" its a bit tired but that adds to the charm
Review 44:Its a traditional hotel with a good peaceful vibe and was very comfortable - Right on the hill overlooking the sea its a great position
Review 45:TV not working in the room. Lack of parking. Had to park on the esplanade below and incurred a ticket as restriction from 0800 hours.
Review 46:Spacious bathroom. Excellent breakfast.
Review 47:staff in the restaurant, could do with more customer service training
Review 48:Great Location, we would stay again. Great value for money. friendly staff at reception & expecially the night staff.
Review 49:Room though clean was very shabby. Stained carpets, chairs, woodwork. Rusted chromework. Limited breakfast choice. Cheap croissants just stuck in the toaster. Only tinned fruit
Review 50:Staff were friendly and helpful
Review 51:The shower didn't work properly it didn't have any power and we couldn't convert it to a bath.
Review 52:Loved the location and the room which was large and comfortable with a 4 poster bed and a sea view. I found the bed a bit too firm but my husband thought it was really comfortable.
Review 53:The room was dirty with heavily stained carpet, chipped paintwork, walls covered in dirty marks.Smeared and filthy windows, grimy and dusty net curtains, hard old lumpy pillows, stained pillow cases. We could not sleep as the mattress had protruding springs and were noisy with every movement. So miserable and disgusted were we that we left at first light!
Review 54:Not a single thing and honestly the worst hotel we have ever stayed in
Review 55:Very small car park at rear of hotel but unrestricted on-street parking outside - if you can find a space! We didn't need to use our car over the 2 days we stayed, so once we found a space just down the road (on our 2nd lap of the area), we didn't have to move it at all.
Review 56:We had booked a budget room so were a bit wary as to how "budget" it would be! No problems - tea and coffee-making facilities, including biscuits, which were replenished each day. Not exactly a power shower, but adequate with lovely fluffy towels. We even had a view of the estuary from our window. We were on a room-only basis so can't comment on food.
Review 57:Having to keep my card in so I could use my lights
Review 58:Everything was excellent, the staff were very helpful, due to my mother tripping up on the step to the bar,she was there for her grandsons wedding which she sadly missed due to breaking her leg
Review 59:great location, historic part of exmouth, facing the sea. A traditional and quite gentile hotel little changed in several years, easy walking distance from station, taxis etc., parking on site limited but possible to park in road outside. It is in need of a bit of interior renovation but this did not diminish the quality of the stay.
Review 60:Car parking was a problem from the start.Once parked we did not move our car until we came home for fear of being unable to find a place when we returned.
Review 61:The staff were very helpfull and made us feel welcome.
Review 62:Lift for disabled ♿ didnt work on our second day. Told reception but they didn't come back to me. Also internet did work.
Review 63:Staff very helpful in all areas.
Review 64:Only complaint is the plumbing could do with an overhaul! Banging pipes when anyone was running water (even from another room). Also the hot water took about 5 minutes to come through which is a criminal waste of water.
Review 65:Almost nothing not to like. Beautiful listed building in a superb location. The room was comfortable, staff extremely pleasant and food excellent.
Review 66:Only mentioned to the conceige when we were leaving that the landline phone did not work and the shower head was loose
Review 67:Staff, food, location, cleanliness
Review 68:The hotel advert on the internet had a place to reserve parking, we ticked it to find when we arrived that it was 1st arrival basis only,no good when you have travelled 300 miles, tired and nowhere to park.
Review 69:The location was excellent , the beds were really comfrey and no messing with the wifi it Came on straight away.
Review 70:Very tired looking and pricey A sad reflection of its former self Lost it's character somehow Needs rebooting badly.
Review 71:Location Staff very helpful over a personal issue
Review 72:No TV for 2days was moved tho dated decor, mismatched bath suite, couldn't have bath no way of filling it,stained carpets, bed mattress lopsided, quilt to small for cover, curtains different lengths, creaking pipes and luke warm water and parking nothing like advertised
Review 73:Staff and food excellent
Review 74:The bed wasn't very comfortable. Lumpy pillows. The shower was very small in a large bathroom and the shower doors were broken.
Review 75:Staff were very friendly and helpful
Review 76:I couldn't get the hairdryer in the bathroom or in the drawer in the bedroom to work, (fortunately I had brought my own) the carpet was clean but quite stained and the curtain lining was frayed.
Review 77:Spacious room with sea view, very comfortable bed, good breakfast
Review 78:Our room in the annex needed airing, a musty smell. Left the window open while we went out smell had gone. Didn't report the issue.
Review 79:Good value for money. 1 Saturday night stay. Was allocated a parking space in the hotel by a very nice staff member at reception.
Review 80:This hotel put the B into Budget. Our bed was awful and in spite of being tired we hardly slept. The staff were nearly all foreign and had little idea about service. Indeed I had to go and look for someone to serve me at the bar on 2 occasions. The breakfast was of cheap poor quality materials and ruled by portion control. It was on the downside of adequate
Review 81:Not much
Review 82:Stained carpet in bedroom, ripped seat on chair, bathroom door rubbed on floor so squeaked every time it was opened. Felt I was being penalised for booking in advance and therefore getting a low rate - cost was £59 without breakfast ..... I really didn't feel it was worth more and for that price would expect a clean carpet and furniture in good repair
Review 83:Size of room, quiet room despite feeling it was 'at the back', good location
Review 84:I didnt enjoy havnt to climb stairs with a walking stick windows in room were old and peeling paint and threadbare carpet in room
Review 85:friendly staff and helpful made our stay very enjoyable lovely and clean room and lovely bathroom we were able to park in the back of the hotel
Review 86:None
Review 87:Very friendly staff. A warm welcome and helpful in every way. Dinner was amazing and the breakfast was more than what was required. We'd definitely book to stay here again!
Review 88:The room was not cleaned up to an appropriate standard. Open coffee and milk packets were left on the desk. The room suggests a courtyard view, the courtyard is actually the car park. The breakfast is an extra 10 pounds each which was rather expensive so we went down the road to a nice local cafe.
Review 89:The location
Review 90:Although the room was clean it was a little shabby. Particularly the carpet which wasn't worn but it was very stained.
Review 91:Superb location, spectacular views across the estuary. Couldn't wish for more.
Review 92:Bed was a bit small, especially as the room was so large !!
Review 93:The reception staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Our bedroom was huge, with a lovely sea view.
Review 94:The bed was very uncomfortable and shower was tiny. My window also fell out. Vertical sliding sash windows, one painted shut and the other that had some make shift chain thing fitted to it so ypu could open the window. It was a cheap bodge really but i coped.
Review 95:Nice location and although in the so called budget room, it was really quite nice. Its a lovely hotel.
Review 96:Decor is a bit tired in the room but you can see the hotel is slowly being updated. Car park is small and so I parked on the road, ok but not a lot of free space.
Review 97:Fantastic views over the sea and really friendly staff.
Review 98:Leaving
Review 99:The whole thing, very much looking forward to a return visit.Exmouth was a surprise very tidy and clean and well cared for. With beautiful views across the bay
Review 100:Budget room still needs the once over with a duster to remove cobwebs hanging from ceiling. Parking your car outside Hotel is pot luck as spaces are few and far between.
Review 101:Comfortable bed, large bathroom and good value and location.
Review 102:Room wasn't cleaned particularly well and the fixtures and fittings need updating (the side wall from the bath fell off, the wallpaper was coming away etc). The hotel is somewhat 'tired' in appearance. Breakfast only available until 0930
Review 103:The location and the staff
Review 104:Brilliant location within Exmouth easy reach of sea front town etc. Lovely walks, hotel very good, food very good, staff extremely helpful. Just a really nice weekend all round will definitely go again.
Review 105:A wedding was in the bar in the evening and we were not able to get a drink either before we went out or when we got back
Review 106:The staff are very helpful and we always have a great stay
Review 107:Beds not comfortable. One mattress required changing it was so bad. Hotel is looking tired in places. WiFi hard to connect.
Review 108:Great breakfast. Friendly and competent staff.
Review 109:Booked a courtyard room thinking I would be looking at a courtyard. I was led through the hotel to an annex and room looked on an alley. Black mould in bathroom and strong mildew smell in carpet.
Review 110:The carpet in our room had definitely seen better days; some more ventilation would have been marvellous too! We walked from the (train) station: longer than expected and a third of that was uphill...
Review 111:However! A well put-together if busy operation is this; thoroughly professional, even in the face of adversity! Do not miss the breakfast! On-site restaurant (singular - one is out of action until further notice!) also served very good suppers too; on-site bar: 7 / 10.
Review 112:Problems with shower and incredibly noisy water system were not sorted. A member of staff tried to convince me that he'd mended the shower when he clearly hadn't.
Review 113:Staff were friendly and accommodating
Review 114:I prefer to be able to park on site although I never had a problem finding a space close to the hotel
Review 115:Room was well appointed and away from corridor plus I could see the sea
Review 116:We had a nice room with a 4 poster bed which was unexpected. Furniture is quite dated but what we would expect in a historic building. Good provision of tea/coffee/biscuits etc and good quality towels and sheets. Unfortunately the shower was hopeless. All in all good value for money in nice position. Parked along the street but was okay.
Review 117:THE TOP OF THE CLOSET IN OUR ROOM NEEDED TO BE DUSTED. OUR ROOM WAS ADJACENT TO THE COURTYARD PARKING. PEOPLE SMOKED THERE AND THE SMOKE CAME INTO OUR ROOM.
Review 118:Room in a picture was large but too small for two people. Highly priced with no breakfast. Cleaning was not up to standards.
Review 119:View was nice from the room.
Review 120:Room 109 in the front of the hotel - excellent view- but obviously once part of a large room since partitioned with this walls. Both nights we stayed were disturbed by noise from the room next door - the first night we heard literally everything that was going on (!) on the second night it was simply people talking - muffled but audible.
Review 121:Excellent breakfast freshly cooked to order from a varied menu View over the estuary to the sea Ability to book in late (after 10 p.m.)
Review 122:N/A
Review 123:As usual the Royal Beacon provided a comfortable, pleasant stay. Staff were all really friendly, food good, bar excellent. Can't fault it, which is why we stay there at least 3 times a year.
Review 124:Decor upstairs 'tired' but view from window very relaxing with table and chairs to sit at. Twin room - bed very very narrow....
Review 125:Welcome. Goodbreakfast. Reception helpful.
Review 126:Carpet very grubby, no anti-slip surface in shower and no rubber mat to compensate for this so quite dangerous. The window cill and net curtain were very grubby, net also mouldy at the bottom. No Italian Restaurant as stated on your site.
Review 127:The location was good. Bathroom clean, beds comfy and a well stocked hospitality tray. Glad we had the room at a discount price as it was definitely not worth £105.00
Review 128:Bathroom plus carpet in room could have been cleaner. A good map with booking info to help find hotel would have been good.
Review 129:staff very helpful and friendly Room upgrade much appreciated Late breakfast ((9.30am) plus 11am checkout excellent. Views excellent
Review 130:nothing, every thing was good
Review 131:everything about the week was good the hospitality was lovely, i was brought up to treat everybody how you want to be treated and they did they were all lovely and friendly, no complaints at all.
Review 132:I thought the hotel in places looked tired, stains and wear on my room carpet. The hall and stair carpets were worn and looked a bit shabby.
Review 133:Great location overlooking the beach and seafront , lovely view of the River. Breakfast was good. Twin room was comfortable.
Review 134:Small car-park but there is always space on the road.
Review 135:Views, location and the friendly staff. A large room with a very comfortable bed (firm not soft) and great walks nearby.
Review 136:Before you go find out if the hotel as a wedding or any other function, We found it very annoying that the residences did not have the ability to use the bar and lounge area after a meal because the wedding guests appeared to take it over .
Review 137:Location and staff.
Review 138:Comfort of the hotel. I like personal service (Food service Breakfast for example) Rather than all in Buffet. Good bar. Wouldn't have minded a bit of background music. Nice and clean all around. Staff very friendly.
Review 139:Hooks missing from bedroom curtains. Shower screen not fitting properly. More importantly, bath quite slippery but no bath mat provided and no bath or shower grab rails at all. A rather impersonal atmosphere. Please , never say in front of a solo guest " just one".
Review 140:Location, view from Front bedroom and dining room gorgeous. Staff encountered helpful and efficient. Comfortable bedroom. Plenty of hot water.
Review 141:Small hotel car park though lots of on street parking nearby. Plumbing a bit noisy and couldn't access the WiFi in our room.
Review 142:Very convenient, we just stayed the one night on a bed only basis. It had everything you would want just for an overnight stay.
The Fine Print
Limited car parking on a first-come-first-serve basis in the hotel car park. Ample free road side parking is close to the hotel.
