Reviews for Lord Hill Hotel & Restaurant

Review 1:We were allocated room 101 a double room? the bed was narrow maybe 3ft certainly not a double ,the bathroom was small with a soffit protruding up to the edge of toilet making it difficult for a male to urinate without making a mess on the floor. It took 7 minutes for hot water to reach the bath before having enough water to bathe, not safety mate to use in bath when having a shower. No coat hooks in bathroom to hang dressing gown while bathing. My husband suggests a senior male member of staff use this room !!! The bed side lights were very difficult to turn on or off. The light over the dressing table did not work.

Review 2:The staff were helpful, polite and considerate we were having a party to celebrate a 70 th birthday .A party of 13 joined us for lunch and all present enjoyed the atmosphere food and staff who served our meal. My husband and I ate in the bar when we arrived on the Sunday evening the bar waiter was excellent as was the food.

Review 3:Unfortunately we were booked into the lodge, which although was very clean & tidy the general appearance was very dated with the antique TV system & heating system which burped & bubbled all night making sleeping somewhat difficult

Review 4:The general attitude of staff appeared very genuine

Review 5:Rather tired bedroom. Sofa warn, arms dirty.Radiator in bathroom cold. Told there was a bedside table on both side of the bed but on arrival only one. When you upgrade the room a full length mirror necessary.

Review 6:A 20 minute walk to our grand-daughter. Only had breakfast one morning, eggs scrambled as requested.

Review 7:The "open 6 days a week restaurant" was not open at all, so we had to eat in the bar from a very limited menu. The heating in the room could not be turned down or off. There is no lift to th upper floors. The bathroom was in desperate need of an upgrade - mouldy silicone everywhere, discoloured grout and chipped tiles. The shower was so weak it couldn't rinse a razor and with the shower curtain closed I had to stand side on to the shower head and still the curtain clung to me - very unpleasant! All in all an overpriced poorly run and maintained hotel.

Review 8:The staff were friendly

Review 9:There was nothing that really didn't like. Nice friendly staff. there was nothing not to like.

Review 10:The Room was warm and clean. The facilities were good and the location of the room away from the main building was just fine for me. The choice of breakfast was excellent and by far the best offering I have experienced in my time traveling

Review 11:Rather too many baked beans served with the cooked breakfast. I have never had fried egg served on top of baked beans before. Presentation could be better.

Review 12:The hotel is cozy and nicely decorated. The conservatory is a good space for breakfast. The cooked breakfast was good.

Review 13:initially in the annex very poor quality room not as shown on booking dot com . was promptly moved at no extra charge when we complained.

Review 14:the suite in the main body of the hotel was very nice spacious, modern and airy.

Review 15:The only thing that we were disappointed with is that we thought we'd be in the hotel and not in a lodge at the back of it. It does have a picture of the hotel on the page where we booked it. Its just a bit misleading. The lodge we stayed in was a bit premier inn style. Nothing wrong with them and all that but we'd sooner stayed in the lord hill hotel itself. It looks lovely. We'll be back in the spring to do it again

Review 16:Very helpful staff who went the extra mile to make my father in law's birthday and parents in law's anniversary that bit more special without being asked.

Review 17:I booked on line and price looked good but I had expected and would have paid more. When we arrived we found ourselves in the Lodge which was about 100 metres away at the bottom of the car park. After 2 days we experienced no hot water, the TV changed channels on its own or turned off. When the toilet flush became a problem. I asked for these problems to be looked at. We were relocated in the main part of the hotel which was far better, except the kitchen extractor fan was out side of the bedroom window and was left on all night.

Review 18:The staff were welcoming and really good polite and nothing was too much trouble

Review 19:I like a powerful shower, it could have been more powerful. Prefer softer pillows and one smelled a little musty. Not a huge deal, just threw it off.

Review 20:Staff were fabulous. Friendly, warm and helpful from arrival, especially when I locked myself out of my room wearing nothing but a towel! Based on the one meal I ate, with room service, it was excellent. Had a rare hankering for fish and chips, not my normal choice because it can be greasy but it was really lovely, top of the range fish and chips.

Review 21:Lights off in room and bathroom +tv during the night till rang reception at 7.30 am. Shower not working. Very disappointed.

Review 22:Very nice meal with 50thwedding anniversary

Review 23:we had no idea that there was a wedding reception taking place on the day.that was not a problem but we both found it impossible to sleep as there was an incessant slamming of doors that seemed to go on well into the early hours of the morning

Review 24:its duration ...one night

Review 25:Only the bedroom stool which was broken

Review 26:Location was perfect and acommodation separate to tge main building so quiet. Furniture a little tired but breakfast was brilliant

Review 27:A wedding reception was taking place, fine, but hordes of children were playing chase around reception lounge, under our table, in and out of our legs. Mum later came and asked us to get up, as we were drinking coffee, so she could search for her child's shoe.

Review 28:Good accommodation. Friendly, helpful, approachable staff. We were in The Lodge which was quiet but no internet. Good breakfast.

Review 29:WOULD DEFINITEY RECOMMEND. Staff extremely welcoming and helpful. Suite exactly what was expected from photos-clean, comfortable with welcome tray. Good size, very clean white bath sheets. Although no lift staff provided porterage of luggage to our room. Excellent breakfasts. A couple of large parties/presentations during our stay but no noise disturbance whatsoever.

Review 30:Peeling paint and shower that dribbled with no pressure at all

Review 31:The public areas in the hotel are lovely, the bedrooms in the lodge and the lodge itself are not really up to scratch. Peeling paint, scruffy dirty net curtains, shower dribbled and no pressure. Sink sealant looks bodged. Carpets dirty. Not very good for over £60 for single occupancy!

Review 32:I would not say their was much to dislike, just a few technical issues. I was unable to connect via the free internet service and could not get through to reception using the hotel room phone service.

Review 33:The location was fantastic to access Shrewsbury town centre and the staff at the hotel were friendly, helpful and efficient.

Review 34:Noise of traffic from our room which was in the Lodge. This backed onto an underpass which was quite busy. No Temperature control in the room and the room was very hot but because of the traffic we could not leave the window open at night.

Review 35:Excellent on site parking facility. Staff very friendly.

Review 36:shower did not work, room very basic for the price we paid, dripping noise kept us awake, headboard on bed very queaky and loose

Review 37:Staff were very polite and effiecent, rooms very clean and tidy, general areas very clean and tidy, food o.k. bit bland plenty of choice

Review 38:Our room in the lodge annex was clean and comfortable. However the shower attachment in the bath was feeble. Room looked onto the busy underpass road.

Review 39:Staff very welcoming. Breakfast choice excellent, lovely croissants and substantial English cooked breakfast. We also tried the delicious kippers one morning.

Review 40:Room needed a little TLC and bathroom needed deep cleaning around taps, plughole and overflow Bed could have been more comfortable.

Review 41:Staff very helpful and friendly

Review 42:The 'Lodge' could do with updating. Looks a bit like Premier Inn but PI is probably more up to date. Wi-Fi did not work in the rooms, TV was very small.

Review 43:Close to town. breakfast was excellent.

Review 44:Our room was in the annex which suffered from rather more than anticipated road noise

Review 45:Room was clean and tidy but a little dated. Evening food in the bar was very good quality and good value. Hotel is within walking distance of town centre.

Review 46:Second room was also very warm, there seems to be a problem with the heating system.

Review 47:Staff very helpful, we changed rooms because the first was too hot, this was carried out no problem.

Review 48:The room in the annex no. 47 was so hot. Thermostat on radiator was broken off so could 't turn heat down. When hotel turned heat off at night radiator made knocking noise all night. Worse nights sleep ever. When we mentioned this next day hotel staff were aware radiator knocked constantly when heating turned off. Very poor situation. Service at breakfast was very slow, although food good when we eventually ate.

Review 49:The bar area in the evening

Review 50:The room was far too hot and when I went to reception there was nobody there. The tv remote didn't work

Review 51:The staff at breakfast were very polite and efficient

Review 52:Access to bathroom was a bit tricky down awkward steps.

Review 53:Comfort of room & all facilities. Late evening snack available in our room. Served with care & promptness.

Review 54:We were on a business trip and the receptionist embarrassed me in front of my staff and was incredibly rude and unhelpful. The bar man was also quite grumpy and unpleasant...and very slow!

Review 55:Traffic noise. TV didn't work. Telephone didn't work. Internet connection didn't work.Noise from water cisterns very loud in room.

Review 56:The breakfasts and staff friendliness.

Review 57:Bedrooms in the annex were past it. The location in the annex was noisy. I got a room move after the first night but in the 2nd room the shower didn't work.

Review 58:Location was fine - breakfast was good. We didn't eat in the restaurant apart from that.

Review 59:We stayed on Saturday and Sunday nights. On the Saturday there was a wedding reception and the guests overflowed into the bar and lounge area. It would be helpful if a small area was reserved for the sole use of hotel guests.

Review 60:Convenient location with large car park for access to centre of Shrewsbury.

Review 61:Excellent location, excellent care/service from all staff. Superb room and great food for breakfast and evening meal. Beers were not bad either.

Review 62:No hot water for shower informed reception on departure. Lock on door looked like it had been broken into.bathroom could be cleaner wanted drink at bar in the evening couldnt crowded with wedding guests

Review 63:Breakfast locality

Review 64:Service at breakfast was bad & the breakfast was served stone cold. Also there was no hot water in the lodge for the shower.

Review 65:How close it was to walk into Shrewsbury

Review 66:Hotel was a bit warm for me, we had the windows open in the bedroom but that made it noisy.

Review 67:Room was lovely, comfortable, spacious and very clean. Nice meal in the bar area.

Review 68:Round the bottom of the taps in the bathroom could of been a lot cleaner, a better shower More comfortable bed & pillows

Review 69:Location & the girl on reception was lovely plus she let us keep our car in the car park till we went into the town

Review 70:The first morning breakfast service was really slow. . The other days were absolutely fine though. Room could be a bit too warm, but ok if window lock disabled.

Review 71:Handy situation close to town centre, and had a Spacious room Ample parking, good breakfast, comfy bed and refreshment tray made for a comfortable stay.

Review 72:Booking. Com quoted £80 for the room. On checking in the receptionist told us that this price was for 'lodge' accommodation but that she would upgrade us to the main hotel. On checking out we saw the brochure with the official tarrifis and in fact the 'lodge' price for the night was only £59 and that the main hotel was £80. So the hotel were passing off upgrades which in fact had actually been paid full price for.

Review 73:Location and cleanliness

Review 74:Tried three rooms to get a double without many stairs, started in attic and worked down, even though specified when booking. Annexe at end of car park not mentioned when booking.

Review 75:Pleasant restaurant, good quality of food

Review 76:The Lodge decoration is looking rather tired and the room we had was hot - couldn't keep the window open due to road noise at the back of the Lodge.

Review 77:The "front of house" facilities are clean and tidy and we found the staff helpful.

Review 78:Stayed at the grandly named lodge. Grand it was not ! Breakfast poor, dry scramble egg sausage burnt etc. Booked for 3 nights but cancelledafter 1st night as room was dirty, peeling on furniture, paint lightswitch fell off so could not use as dangerous. But we were charged fortwo NIghts . Would never use them again.

Review 79:Very Little, However towels must have been new, white and fluffy, unlilke anything else in the room or bathroom.

Review 80:Generally, the waiting/serving staff was very good but one evening at dinner with only two couples in the restaurant, attention was diverted by helping to set up for the next day's conference in the adjoining room and service was a bit slow.

Review 81:Pleasant and friendly staff and a comfortable room with a large bathroom.

Review 82:Didn't like the walk from the annexe to the main building. Very inconvenient if raining Evening menu was not changed.Could be a problem for someone staying more than two days. Beds in annexe becoming aged.

Review 83:The attitude of the waitresses was excellent Quality of the food 5 star

Review 84:I stayed in the lodge. Unfortunately it's located at the rear of the hotel, and this puts it very close to the bypass. Subsequently, especially due to the room I was allocated (58), one can hear the traffic as it travels past. Not conducive to a good nights sleep, and the shower was a let down. Also, their credit card reader is very slow indeed. So much so that a queue very soon began to form. It's a shame, I was looking forward to staying there.

Review 85:Rather shabby. Chips on staicase paintwork, mildew round bath ,dirty carpet, no wifi connection; wasn't asked if I wanted a paper -had to order from reception and find out where there were delivered ; wasnt offered help with bags;cold tap did not work. Wrong menu for room service in the room details .

Review 86:Easy going . Breakfast staff on second day very good. Comfortable bed . Quiet. Staff generally pleasant although not always very proactive

Review 87:Bedroom was very old fashioned and in need of modonising. Quite dang ours steps downs to the bathroom where the doors didn't meet or shut.

Review 88:Staff friendly and parking available

Review 89:The wi fi was non existent, we were in the annexe. !!!!! The tv was shocking. Everyone as we were checking out was complaining about both of these, but the girl just shrugged her shoulders. I ordered breakfast one morning and it never arrived so I just gave up and went, did not want a fuss if they could not be bothered. We dined in one evening and had the 3 course menu etc, but there was a change of staff in the middle of us eating and we never got all the meal, we could have walked off and not paid but we did.

Review 90:Location.

Review 91:1. I stayed at the hotel with 2 friends and 2 of us thought the toilet paper was harsh to use and my friend said he was sore in the nether regions !! 2. The bacon at breakfast was a bit tasteless for 2 of our group and the remaining friend is a veggie.

Review 92:The bed in my room was very comfortable in a quiet area of The Lodge.

Review 93:Very friendly staff , we didnot have breakfast we ordered toast and coffee inthe lounge area which was very nice . Would go there again sometime .Short

Review 94:We booked bed and breakfast, but the small print stated room only. Wefelt we were misled and sat down to a pretty mediocre small meal, andhad to share a table with four chatting teenagers because there were notenough tables. We arrived in the restaurant to find no staff to help us,When we were served the waitress kept touching me, and seemed inadept atserving. We were charged £19 for a breakfast we could have paid a thirdas much for a better meal at most 'greasy spoons'. When wecomplained the next morning when settling our bill the youngreceptionist seemed disinterested and frankly rude. Another guestwaiting behind us, ales stated they thought they had booked B&B. Theroom itself was basic; very akin to a Travel Lodge,; the carpet wasdirty, the furniture was shabby and rickety, the stool by the dressingtable could not be sat on, as it threatened to collapse. The bathroomwas not clean with a black gungy string hanging from the basin coldtap.. We feel the hotel had used booking.com to fill empty rooms at areduced cost, so could not be bothered to clean the room, and provided asubstandard service. We feel that in Britain it is commonly acceptedthat b & b means bed and breakfast, and while we should not haveassumed otherwise, it is reasonable to expect bed and breakfast for £85.We will warn as many people as we can to avoid the Lord Hill, and about using booking.com

Review 95:Quiet room, off road parking

Review 96:Nothing not to like!Good h

Review 97:The location of this Hotel is brilliant, no need to take take car to the town about 10- 15 mins walk. The town is also brilliant as there are loads of little individual shops.Ordered a 4th Wedding Anniversary card on way in at Pretty Box Pink which the lady was going to make picked it up on way back to hotel. Husband thought we be about 2 hours, we spent 5 and 1/2 hours and had lunch.

Review 98:Staff needs some training - a disaster at breakfast as we were asked to wait for a table that was then given to someone else. On complaining, the waitress was not helpful at all. We ended up in the bar with a long trek to fetch cereals etc and were forgotten - it took 15 minutes for our order to be taken. to be fair, on complaining the hotel deducted the cost of breakfast.

Review 99:Hotel adequate for the price.Room OK but in annex across courtyard: a wet traipse to breakfast on a rainy day.

Review 100:Breakfast seemed poorly co-ordinated. Staff taking orders and staff clearing dishes didn't seem to work together. Tables were not allocated to rooms so some guests arrived and couldn't find seats or were shown to tables already occupied. We were left waiting for our hot breakfast over 30 mins. When we complained, we were told the kitchen was busy. No apology was given when we pointed out that 17 other guests who came in to dining room after us had all been served ahead of us. Food was only average, with milk slightly off and fried items greasy.

Review 101:Hotel location very convenient for Shirehall Registry Office

Review 102:We found the rooms were hot, bed was slightly uncomfortable and the shower was a bit weak and hard to control temperature

Review 103:We came up to Shrewsbury for a friend's wedding, the Lord Hill Hotel was great for one night, it was very clean, staff were friendly and breakfast was lovely.

Review 104:No lift and couldnt swap rooms due to no double beds on ground floor had to carry pushchair up and downstairs

Review 105:Staff were warm and helpful at check in out and breakfast

Review 106:We thought we were staying in the main hotel but when we arrived we were in the lodge. The rooms were okay, dated and in need of decoration but the TV kept going off and the Wifi was non existent. I complained every day I was there and told every day that it would be fixed but it wasn't.

Review 107:Breakfast was lovely

Review 108:The tv kept turning itself off. My sister in the room next could not get wifi. With the window open traffic noise was bad and it was a hot couple of days. Slept with the window shut which was not ideal.

Review 109:The room was clean the staff were pleasant and the food good.

Review 110:Very old fashioned style in the Wrekin suite. Room was warm but fortunately there was a fan on the ceiling. Our first bedroom had towels on the floor as if cleaners had not yet finished. Bar area was very quiet. Avoid the hot chocolate which is watery. Breakfast was nice and offered a nice selection of cooked options, however the staff were not very pleasant.

Review 111:We were given a twin room but booked a double. When notified we were upgraded immediately to the Wrekin suite with a double bed. Good breakfast.

Review 112:Full English breakfast was not nice, it was tasteless, tasted like cheap ingredients. Coffee was very weak and hardly tasted like coffee.

Review 113:Staff were very nice especially Ellie, she was excellent, she is a real asset to this hotel.. Rooms were very nice, tastefully decorated and clean. Food in the restaurant was very nice.

Review 114:Away from hotel, not good for a lone female also on ground floor. Room smelt of toilets, was not particularly clean, blood stain on pillow case. Wifi was not good, TV kept turning off, no hairdryer

Review 115:Staff were friendly

Review 116:Plumbing very noises. Luckily we had ear plugs. Room above restraint. Piped music started around 7am and was audible in room.

Review 117:£44 a night for a suite. Bargain. 15 mins walk to lovely Shrewsbury town.

Review 118:The service at breakfast was slow and disorganised (other people came to breakfast after us and their order was taken before us)

Review 119:The room was very comfortable. When we reported a noise from the heating system, the manager came straightaway to investigate. Plenty of car parking space.

Review 120:Staff where very helpful, I did not have my car over night and had travel cot and lots of bags, the hotel looked after them until I could collect them later. The room was really clean and nice

Review 121:This was an extremely tatty, badly decorated hotel. Paint had been sanded off doors and left bare and chipped throughout the Lodge. Where doors had been painted, paint overlapped the handles.

Review 122:There was parking.

Review 123:Service at breakfast on the second day was poor. 45 minute wait for egg & bacon was not acceptable. Toast & tea were cold by the time hot food appeared.

Review 124:Location. Walkable to centre of Shrewsbury & flower show. Pleasant & comfortable hotel.

Review 125:The bed was creaky and uncomfortable, the room overlooked the front of the building and 6.00am Sunday morning we were woken by the linen lorry. The shower was pathetic even after running the tap for 1/4 hour to get hot water.

Review 126:The food was brilliant, well cooked and well presented. Excellent value for money. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 127:Not made clear that breakfast was not included in the price. Restaurant lacking in character. Food very average.

Review 128:Good location and good value for money.

Review 129:Water pressure in both shower and sink was very poor did mention to staff, and they said they would look into it.

Review 130:Hotels location, breakfast was very good, and staff very helpful.

Review 131:This is a comfortable, clean and very friendly hotel which is near to the town centre, 25 minutes walking distance from the railway station (I walked there in the morning) The outstanding experience is the friendly but professional staff, they remember you from a year ago and greet you as old friends. I have used the hotel for family wakes, for pleasure visits and used them instead of staying with relatives - it is that good My next door neighbours (titled) also use it, which, living in rural Norfolk, is quite a surprise. Credit goes to the bar, restaurant and desk staff for their excellent service.

Review 132:For a one night stop it was convenient and the annex was quiet and comfortable, with some restaurants within easy walking distance. Had to keep windows closed because of traffic noise from very busy road at the back of the property could be a problem in hot weather.

Review 133:possibly need new mattresses or even just bed toppers and new pillows , otherwise perfect

Review 134:location is really good , room great size , hotel staff really friendly , and breakfast amazing

Review 135:Service at breakfast was very slow and unorganised & it wasn't busy. There were a few issues with insects in the bathroom (earwigs)

Review 136:Comfy beds, lovely reception & housekeeping staff

Review 137:Staff seem happy. Anything you ask for they are happy to help. Food is a good standard. Rooms are comfy. Nice firm beds. I've stayed a few times and it's always been reliable. The Abbey Suite is fantastic.

Review 138:Fire door left open at the end of our corridor, a look in there revealed some very threadbare areas. Dusting was not as it should be, lamp in room had dust on it as did window blind. No aircon in room but a fan was provided. Bath size was ample.

Review 139:Bed was comfy, room quiet, we also had an evening meal which was very good. Breakfast was also excellent.
